Grapefruit Diet

Summary

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

Description

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

History

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Criticism

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

Hello all. I "started" the Grapefruit diet on monday (it is now Sunday) and I have lost 5 pounds. Ok so let me explain. I tried really really hard but the no snacking was not working for me. I decided to modify it. I still cut our the carbs and white/yellow veggies. It was basically atkins with grapefruit juice. Before breakfast, lunch and dinner, I drunk 8oz of the juice. Whenever I would snack (on meat or green veggies) i would drink 4 oz. I have also worked out once this week for an hour. I was hungry and bored so i THEN was fed up and was getting off the diet. By saturday (day 6) i had a serving of rice with my meal (about 35 grams of carbs). I got on the scale and was down a pound. Motivated, the next day i had about 60 grams of carbs, i lost 2 pounds. All in all, i have adapted the diet plan to do 5 days no carbs, 2 days light carbs. It jump started my weight loss and i am down :). I will keep you guys posted. Starting tomorrow, back to no carbs.

Your welcome dreamer. I admit I was completely motivated until thanksgiving came, and me and my boyfriend have been going out to eat since then, drinking, eating carbs.... now it's december 7th and I have restarted my diet today. So I am trying to remotivate myself and stick to it. Good luck to you dreamer and stay motivated! The longer you stick to the diet the easier it becomes to not have the bad cravings. and to the other ANONYMOUS, stick to green and red veggies, and any meat. Also look at your salad dressings! Alot of them have sugar and carbs. I make my own salad dressing with balsamic vinagarette and olive oil. Right now in my fridge and freezer I have spinach, brocolli, green beans, asparagus, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers (although some sites say no tomatoes n cucumbers, and some sites say you can have tomatoes cucumber im not really sure) green and red peppers, red onions (not white) then i have canned tuna, turkey, chicken, salmon, tilapia, mahi mahi, steak (I try to go easy on the beef) grapefruits, grapefruit juice, V8 juice, bacon eggs. When I first started the diet I was cooking my meat anyway I wanted, just like alot of sites said, and eat as much salad as I wanted, but I didnt notice a hhuge difference in weight loss until I decided to start doing research on this diet, and I also came across the atkins diet, and read about low or no carb diets. The atkins diet is almost like the grapefruit diet, except he says to use 1 TBS of butter per serving, and no carb diets say use a vinagarette dressing with no sugar in it, so I stopped eating my favorite salad dressing, started using only 1 TBS of butter, and tried eating more baked meats, but if you want more flavor you can sautee your meats in olive oil or a LITTLE butter. Try sauteeing red peppers, green peppers, and red onions with your meat....ITS GOOD! and filling along with a salad. I only drink coffee for breakfast because alot of sites have said too much coffee raises your insulin levels, and a high blood sugar level can block fat from burning! So try 1 cup of coffee for breakfast only, and lots more water, and I don't drink the milk before bed I drink V8 juice which I love. So when i started doing all this, I started to lose weight faster. I do not have a scale in my home,so am not sure how much I lost, but I can say that the jeans that I was wearing size 18 are too big now. I can wear my size 16's again! and I am sure I will soon be in a 14 in about another month or less. i know I wrote alot but just wanted to say what is working for me at this time. All these website are quite confusing, so I would just keep researching and do what works best for you. Stay away from the sweets and carbs and you will be ok

Sorry, when I say 1 cup of coffee for breakfast only, I did not mean for it to look like I only have coffee for breakfast. I meant I only have 1 cup of coffee for per day, and that is at breakfast time. I eat 2 slices of bacon for breakfast, 2 eggs (usually scrambled with 1TBS of butter), and 1/2 a grapefruit, or grapefruit juice. Sometimes I do drink green tea with lemon along with lunch and dinner. This week during breakfast I will not scramble or fry my eggs. I am going to boil a dozen so I can grab 2 boiled eggs for breakfast everyday this week. It's even less fat, and I am a little tired of the fried egg. Sometimes since I work from home, I do a little excercise and crunches, not much because I get bored with it, but I am hoping the little extra excercise will help in the weight loss.

Oh, again anonymous, just stick to all green veggies and you can't go wrong really, and I think any meat is fine, but you should not bread or deep fry your meat no matter what! sautee it, bake it, grill it. When I am feeling too lazy to cook, I might throw to tilapia filets in a baking dish, brush with olive oil or butter, then chop up green pepper, red pepper, and red onion, and eat that with a salad. It can get tiresome to have to stand in the kitchen cooking for each and every meal. Plus I throw my bacon on a cookie sheet and place it in the oven on 400 degrees, turning a few times, and it's ready in about 5 minutes or so.

Also I have learned that no diet will work if you continue to drink alcohol! Good luck

Hey dreamer, no problem! This is what the forum is for, to all help each other with any helpful info. I think the more everyone keeps in touch with the good and the bad of their dieting, the more we can all accomplish these goals. Of course it is up to each and every individual to get thru their own weight loss, but it helps to know others just like you are going thru the same thing. Dreamer, I can relate to how certain cultures eat certain food that is not good for them. I am african amer and live in the south, actually no matter what race you are, if your in the south, and you love food then watch out! lol before I moved here 5 years ago I was in decent shape, but there is good food everywhere here in atl. We have the celebrity chefs, and alot of famous food places that is hard to resist :) I too have a bf that I cook for. At first he didnt help me out very much with this diet. He is in good shape and being a southerner he likes thicker women, so was not very helpful for me when i started November 2nd I think it was. But now he sees how serious I am with it and is trying to not ask for the typical foods. I think your bf is going to have to maybe compromise with you, especially if you are diabetic! I grew up with people in my family who had diabetes and we all ate healthy most of the time. It wasnt until I got out on my own and had kids that i developed bad eating habits, but i want to be healthy and live longer more so than look better. I'm sure it will be hard to stay away from the mexican food, I know how good the food is, but you can try eating some other foods. Or maybe revise your recipes for more healthy ingredients. You can do it. Just take it one day at a time, try not to think of the end result yet, because the end is not here yet, right? I try to take difficult things one day at a time...next thing you know 2 weeks have passed and you've probably lost about 10 lbs! We can keep each other motivated, and you have access to the internet so google search healthy or no carb mexican recipes, I bet you will find something good and inexpensive to make! :)

Hey, all. I'm trying this up 'til the holidays... I'm expecting to maybe gain a little back over those couple of days, but if I can lose a few lbs before then and not go too crazy maybe I can keep from gaining 10 lbs. I've been counting calories this year and I've lost a little, but I needed something a bit more structured for a while. I'm on day two and really enjoying it. I haven't been hungry or inclined to snack at all. I feel like I'm eating "too much" but it is nice to have a little break from measuring and weighing my portions. And I'm a cheese freak, so I hope it's true that you can eat as much cheese as you want on this diet... I've heard this diet really works... It seems like it couldn't possibly. But I'm interested to see if it does. Good luck to everyone!

welcome firm-and-fit, and akela! Akela, I never saw any information about eating all the cheese you want. In fact I gave away all the cheese I had in the fridge because I did not see it anywhere on our lists of allowd food. In fact the only dairy I see as allowd is skim milk as a bedtime snack, and possibly cottage cheese. Still not sure of the cottage cheese as there are conflicting info about it

Anon: I don't know, hon. There's a gazillion different versions of this diet floating around on the 'net. I'm actually a bit confused. I understand about, say, not eating corn (sugar/starch)... But I JUST found a list that corn was on the "Things You May Have" list. Several lists I've found said you can eat "any cheese" and that kind of makes sense as while cheese is calorie dense it's low sugar and virtually zero carb. I'm still trying to have it in moderation, 'cause I've been calorie counting and I'm not going to delude myself into thinking I can have as much cheese as I want and still lose weight, but I am eating it on this diet. We'll see if it works.

posted 9-Dec-2009 2:46pm

This is one of the first versions I saw and the one I've been using. Going off the diet for the two days every 12 days makes sense to me. 1. It will keep one from getting burnt out and 2. If the diet is running really low calorie for some, the two day break will keep the body from going into starvation mode. And because of that "re-starting" the diet after a break probably keeps it working effectively. (If it works at all.)

The Grapefruit Diet:

BREAKFAST:

1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
2 Eggs any style
2 Slices of bacon
Black coffee or tea, no sugar

LUNCH:

1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, {not low fat or fat free})
Meat (Cooked any way)

DINNER:

1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice.
Meat (cooked any way) Vegetables (any green or red, may be cooked in butter or Seasoning or a salad as above) Black coffee or tea, no sugar

BEDTIME:

(opt) 8oz Tomato juice or skim milk

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. At any meal you may eat until you are full, and you can not eat anymore. You must eat the minimum listed listed at each meal.

2. Do not eliminate anything from the diet, especially don't skip the bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn the fat.

3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.

4. Cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to one cup each meal.

5. Don't eat between meals, if you eat the combination of food suggested, you will not get hungry.

6. The diet may eliminate sugars and starches. Fat does not form fat, it helps burn it, so you can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.

7. Do not eat desserts, breads and white vegetables of sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salads or vegetables. Eat till you are stuffed. The more you eat the more weight you will lose.

8. There may be no weight loss in the first 4 days, but you may lose 5 pounds on the 5th day. You may lose 1 and 1/2
pounds every two days until you reach your goal.

9. DRINK EIGHT 8oz GLASSES OF WATER EVERY DAY. 1/2 GALLON.

ALL SOFT DRINKS NEED TO BE DIET AND CAFFEINE FREE.

YOU MAY NOT HAVE: White onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, carrots, corn, starchy vegetables, bread, noodles, rice, potato chips, pretzels or fruit or diet dressing.

YOU MAY HAVE: Red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, green onions, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, chili (no beans) mayonnaise, any cheese, hot dogs, cole slaw, regular salad dressing, green vegetables, 1tsp nuts, dill or bread and butter pickles.

IMPORTANT:
STAY ON DIET 12 DAYS AND STOP FOR 2 DAYS

Works out great to start on a Monday because you will have every other weekend off of the diet.

I had copious amounts of beer on Monday, so even though tomorrow is day five I'm might not see results until Saturday. I'm doing really well, other then that one day. Been having loads off fun with meal planning and been cooking up some good eats. I have to cook for my husband and son, too, so it's been fun coming up with healthy things I can do for them and still utilize stuff for MY eats. So I made them pitas for lunch (for example) and made myself a huge cabbage salad and used some of the meat and veggies I cooked up for them for the pitas in my salad and the cucumber sauce for dressing. Feta cheese. It was to die for. Yummy! Not remotely burnt out, yet, 'cause I've been shaking up the menu a lot. I really hope this works. It's something I could do to take breaks from my "normal" routine without feeling guilty.

It has always been hard for me to stick to diets, but with prayer and hope I am determined to do it. I will post my weight after 5 days to see if it is working for me. Well dreamer and akela, I wish you both luck. I started the diet I think around Nov 2 and started off good. The hardest part at first was to not drink alcohol, and not eat my favorite carbs like white rice (something i ate everyday) pasta, potatoes etc. I did really good. I gave my brother all my rice and pastas, and potatoes, got rid of the wine (my fav lol) and forced myself to eat breakfast every morning, but now, more than a month later, I am tired of the damn bacon, im tired of eating breakfast because i wasnt a breakfast person b4, I only use to have coffee for breakfast, a whole pot to be exact! And I miss drinking juices, and grapefruit gets a little old! However, I still dont have any carbs in my home yay me! I have only skipped breakfast maybe a total of 2 times, and I have not breaded and deep fried any meat. So all in all I believe that I have made a pretty good effort in changing my whole eating habits. I don't even crave carbs, ok I admit yesterday I bought a cheese filled pasta that is covered in a pesto basil sauce LOL! but only one bag, and I wont eat it alone. I will share it with my bf when he comes over this weekend. Dreamer, I understand how you feel girl. I hope you do give yourself a chance to at least try the diet for 2 weeks, I promise you will see a change, I am one size smaller than before! So it can work. It is hard at first but by the end of the 1st week you will start to get use to it, by the 2nd week, you will feel like you have accomplished something big, and feel more healthy. Good luck and dont eat too much this weekend! lol

I did fine the first two days and then yesterday I bombed big time. I am right back at it toda though. I have lost 2.5lbs in three days. My goal is to lose 12 by Dec. 31. I think that is doable on this diet. Especially since I know that it can be done (ever watch the biggest loser). I no longer believe that we can only safely lose 1-2lbs per week those people lose anywhere between 3-18 pounds per week!!!

Feeling a bit bummed... Despite the beer Monday I was hoping to maybe see a LITTLE loss today but I've actually gone up a pound. (DAMN!) I know that our weight(s) fluctuate daily, so I'm trying not to stress, but I'm not sure how to do much better then I have been. I've been eating all the foods recommended. I'll hang in there. But if I don't see a loss soon, I dunno. Granted, it's not "hard" for me (yet) but it's hard to stick with something if it's not working. Will try to get a bit of exercise in... Maybe that will help. Hope you're all having better luck then I am. Not throwing in the towel, yet, just frustrated. :)

Firm-n-Fit- Sorry, I've got to comment. I'm not disrespecting the work that The BL people do, because they work DAMN hard to lose that weight... But keep in mind... They're exercising 8-12 hours A DAY and they have doctors and nutritional experts there to keep tabs on making sure they aren't over-stressing thier bodies. We can obviously lose more then 2 lbs in a week, but much more then that falls in the catagory of "crash dieting" and it's really not healthy. Please don't set your standards to those on a reality t.v. program. There are healthier ways to go about doing things. :)

I did a variation of this diet in the late 90s with a 40-45 pound successful loss in about 3 months. I only did the bacon, grapefruit and eggs in the morning. I'm not a coffee drinker and I only drink decaf tea so these were never a problem for me. The bacon and grapefruit seemed to give me a jump-start in the morning and I started to see results right away. I've been on this plan again now for only a week and I already feel a difference physically. My fingers and feet are not swelling and I have more energy during the day. I can remove my wedding band for the first time in more than a year!

I'm in my late 40s now and have not only gained weight (about 50 pounds back) but have also developed hypertension, joint and muscle pain, and a general malaise. I never feel good anymore. I tried an exercise program a few months back but canceled my membership after 1 month because my potassium levels plummeted suddenly because of all the extra water I was drinking. I also found I had diabetes isipidus, not life-threatening but definitely a warning sign of something going on. I discovered my blood pressure meds have a diuretic in them that creates the excessive fluid loss and because of the high blood pressure, I should not consume extra sodium to help prevent dehydration. So, I'm back to square one again.

I've decided to try this plan again, similar to the grapefruit diet but eat balanced meals the other two meals of the day, just as I did before minus the grapefruit part. I felt healthy, had more energy and quickly stopped craving enriched, starchy processed foods. I'm hoping the additional 10 years in age will not be a negative this time and that I can make this a lifestyle change permanently...... I would really love to be able to ride my bike again without muscle fatigue, potassium loss and chronic fatigue. I also have asthma. I'm 5'5" and 210 pounds. It's shocking to see that in writing! I should weight around 150. I started this plan about a week ago and I haven't been on the scale since.

I have my husband trying to eat better as well. He's 9 years older than me. He has high bad cholesterol and a family history or heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure so the odds are not in his favor. Both of us have excessive belly fat, indicating we are both mentally and physically stressed which puts us even further at risk. We also do not have medical insurance so if one of us were to have one minor health issue, it could be financially devastating.

We are eating only whole wheat or multigrain breads in limited amounts, lots of fresh or frozen vegetables; steamed, raw, stir-fried with only olive oil, red beans, black beans and brown or whole grain rice, fresh fruits daily, either smoothies, fresh cut or baked with Stevia sweetner, a little low-fat yogurt with Stevia as a topping, seasoning with herbs and exotic spices for rich flavor and complimentary pairing with fresh fish, seafood, chicken, turkey and fat-free ham, very lean pork cutlets, wild game such as elk, deer, buffalo (very healthy!) and very small amounts of starchy foods such as baby red potatoes, whole wheat pasta, and whole wheat fruit muffins sweetened only with honey, small amounts of molasses, real maple syrup or Stevia. We stay away from frozen prepared, canned or other processed foods to avoid chemicals and heat-processed foods that cut the nutritional value. Frozen vegetables are actually better than fresh in some instances (same with fruits) because the nutrition is preserved by the immediate blanching and freezing process. Fresh produce and vegetables are not truly fresh unless you buy from local produces or farms and much of the nutrition is lost in transit and cold storage to get it to the stores. We buy fresh only from local markets and use frozen as the alternative source when fresh is out of season.

This is a variation of the grapefruit diet but it was approved by our doctor and since I had success with it before, I know I can safely lose the weight again. We both have to get healthy and stay that way! Our lives may depend on it now. I'll post an update soon.

People this diet is not healthy, you might lose weight but as soon as you start eating carbs again you will gain it back. are you going to eat this way the rest of your life? you need to find a better way. do the grapefruit and eat a balanced meal. As long as you eat around 1,200 calories a day and burn more than you eat you will lose weight. stop doing fad diets and get serious.

Anonymous, essentially, what you are saying is the point I was trying to get across. The only good weight loss is doing it safely and with a huge degree of balancing all food groups. The combinations of the right foods are more important than just watching how many calories you take in. If you eat too few of the wrong foods, your metabolism will shut down to a crawl in the starvation mode. If you eat too many of the wrong foods, you will not lose weight. The trick is finding the right combination of foods that work with your body and by all means, use good sense in your selections and make sure your doctor approves what you are doing, especially if you already have health concerns.

Today, I purchased a blender today to make fresh fruit smoothies for my husband and me. My lunch consisted of a 16 oz. shake that kept me satisfied until dinner. My first try at this was a coconut milk and low-fat lactose free milk based with ice, low-fat plain yogurt, with 1/2 banana and 1/2 and apple. I left the skin on the apple for additional fiber. No additional sweetner was needed and it was similar to drinking a milkshake made from ice milk instead of ice cream. My husband even drank one and he's a bit picky when it comes to diet stuff. Use your imagination and create healthy snack foods from items you already like. Be creative and develop treats that you will enjoy having. Get a friend or diet buddy and share ideas. Finding a plan you can live with for the rest of your life is the key to successful and permanent healthy weight.

On that note, I'm back to watching the calories. This isn't maintainable (and for whatever reason, not working for me, though it does work for many)for me... Although when I hit my next plateau I might give it a whirl, again. I did love some of the meal plans, etc. I came up with. Good luck to everyone!

Ok I'm back since my last post (posted 31-Mar-2009 9:04am), sticking to this diet from 1/5/09 until about May 09 I was down to 172 so that was a 19lb weight loss. Of course on and off of it the entire time. Since then I've been going up and down by about 5lbs but being able to maintain my weight but again not feeling good like I did last year. I wasnt on the diet but in June I got down to 168, I want that back. So I just started this diet again on 1/11/10 @ 176.50 lbs and my goal is to get to 160 with no specific date in mind. I will keep you updated on my progress weekly. I will try not to weigh myself but once a week so i will not get discouraged.....Toodles...Much Success to all... Carla...

Update since the 1/8/10 posts above: I've been at it now since the first of January. I weighed myself finally this week and I'm down 12 pounds already. I bought a pair of new Worthington dress pants about two weeks ago. They were too tight in the waist and looked way too tight in the butt when I bought them but I got them anyway for motivation. I wore those same pants this morning for a meeting with a dress sweater and they fit perfectly! Whoo hoo!! My husband has even joined in now and he's drinking the healthy smoothies, eating the whole wheat pasta and breads, veggies and such and not complaining about it....... he's lost a little weight too already. I have tons more energy already so I know for sure now that processed starches and refined sugars (non-natural carbohydrates) were making a slug out of me! Keep at it everyone.... the rewards are worth the perseverance.

I started this diet today. I actually feel better than i usually did because of the water intake. I saw where someone ask about retaining water. I was told by a nutritionist to heat one cup of water and put lemon juice in it. It acts as a diuretic. So I'm ready. After reading all the post here I'm very excited. I hadn't drank water in ages and just realized it does make you have more energy lol. Good luck all. If anyone has any pointers email me at sonya_payne@hotmail.com

Hello everyone! I've been on this diet before and I can testify that it works. 2 years ago I had lost about 45 pounds and kept it off for a year. I'm an emotional eater so when my son moved far away without telling me I was in mourning so I ate for consolation. So to all the people who say that it doesn't work as soon as you stop, I say they are wrong. Most people who gain their weight back go back to the same bad eating habits that made them overweight in the first place and that is what I did. I gained all my weight back. Now since January 2010 I made a pact with myself that I am tired of this roller coaster ride called "yo-yo dieting" I started the Grape fruit diet on January 7 and I feel good already. I didn't weigh myself on that day but when I was at the doctor 3 weeks ago I was almost 250 pounds. I have not weighed myself but I feel that I have lost something. I've been drinking a lot of water and my skin is looking better (I barely use to drink water) I'm weighing myself tomorrow and I will post to let u no my results. I am debating on whether to buy another scale because scales make me crazy. I would weigh myself everyday! Anyway, I think the grapefruit juice is an appetite suppressor. Eating this way and drinking 4 20 oz bottles of water a day keeps me feeling full and I recognize the difference of feeling hungry or thirsty. I think any diet that promotes eating vegetables is a good idea. I notice when I'm at my unhealthiest I barely eat vegetables but I'm consuming a lot of carbs and my down-fall "cookies". Anyway Wish me luck as I will to everyone. Friends, don't give up. We are in a fight for our lives. This week I will bring in my treadmill from out the garage and incorporate walking with this diet. God bless everyone!

Hello Everyone!!! I have been reading up on the grapefruit diet now for about a week and that includes reading all of your post which has lead me to the decision that I do want to try this diet!!!
I am a 22 year old female who is 5'6 weighing in at 220punds (ugh) I use to be so active in high school played softball all my life and after high school i quit ball and started working. i have gained so much weight and i hate it so so much, i tried the cookie diet and that worked i lost 30pounds in 2 months but gained it all back and then some when i got off and a lot of it has to do with i didnt eat right. i tried so many diet pills and yeah obvisouly that didnt work.
i bought a house with my boyfriend and omg he is a workout freak he is in the gym everyday and he has such a nice body and i hate it i get so embarassed to go with him anywhere with the fear that people are going to look at us and say what is he doing with that fat thing...i know thats horrible but it is starting to depress me.
Well my lil sister is getting married in sept of 2010 and i need to lose 40-50pounds by then so i have decided to try this diet. I plan on starting tomorrow so i hope i have good results like the rest of you. If you guys can give me any tips or advice please let me know i will keep everyone posted on my progress!! best wishes to all and hope to hear from youlove

Hi Everyone,
I have been thinking about doing this for a while but had a few questions first. If anyone could help that would be great.
1. It says you can eat meat how ever you like with your salad and grapefruit. Does this mean I could eat as many (frozen) chicken nuggets as I wish? Or maybe the Chicken Strips from a fast food restaurant?
2. Can you substitute the bacon for Turkey Bacon?
3. When you are off the 2 days....what are you allowed to eat?
Thank you!

Hi!! I'm starting this diet tomorrow and I'm so so excited. All of your posts are so inspiring!I am 20 and weigh 140. I'd like to get down to at least 105 because I have a small frame. Anyone have similar stats? I really could use the support. WishToLose50, the batter on strips and nuggets has tons of carbs. Only "naked" meat with spices and seasonings. You can do your reg diet the 2 days off, but you still want to watch the sugar. Don't overdo the junk.

Forgot to say...Height 5'4". A great way to get all the foods is to have a grilled chicken salad. Combines the meat and veggies. Also if you're gonna have ranch, should be regular, not low fat or light, as the low fat has more carbs. I did this diet when i was in high school. Was already thin so just needed to lose abt 7 lbs. It took 5 days!!! I love the food options and the fact that you're not starving. The more you eat of the combination of foods, the more weight you lose. Unlike other diet plans, you get those 2 amazing days off. I can't wait to start

Hello fellow 12 day dieters! Today is my 12th day of the diet. Whew...I made it. Actually it wasn't that bad. I bought a scale to weigh myself in the morning. I know I lost some more weight because I'm fitting a pair of pants that I couldn't get into. I was so excited! To all the naysayers,"This diet works". This is the only diet that ever worked for me. Being that tomorrow is my 2 days off, I really don't have a big craving for anything. I will eat sensibly though because I don't even want to go back to eating all those cookies like I was doing. So of course I'm staying far away from them. I'll write back tomorrow with results of my weigh in.

I just started this diet yesterday morning. I had been on the Daniel Fast with my church for the previous 21 days. I decided to only take Sunday evening off, and then hop on this plan while still disciplined. I was tired of doing the Daniel Fast because, although we could eat vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, I was feeling as though I was taking in too many carbs. I did lose 6 lbs on the fast.

I am very excited about the possibilities of this diet. I am 5'0, 39yo, 220 start weight, size 18. I have so much weight to lose that I am not really sure at what weight I would look good. For now, I will say that I need to lose an even 100lbs, but will focus on smaller goals. I am hoping this diet at least helps me with the first half of my needed weight loss.

I weighed 218.4 this morning when I awakened. I walked two miles yesterday. My goal is to walk daily to increase my fat burning potential. It has been raining all day so far so I am not sure I will be able to walk today.

Hi, I am planning on starting this diet today!! I need to lose about 50 lbs. Any tips would be helpful. For the tea after breakfast and dinner....can it be hot Lipton tea? Or do I need a specific kind? Also, is it best to have the grapefruit before you eat or after you eat?
Thanks for any tips!!

I am interested in this diet. Is it 1/2 of grapefruit with each meal or an entire grapefruit? I have seen both when googling the grapefruit diet. Also I like chai tea with skim milk. Can I take the bedtime skim milk and have it in the am with the tea? On the 2 days off what are you allowed to eat? 5'11 and 315 pounds. I want to loose 150 pounds. it took 24 years and 5 kids to put this weight on so I realize it may take awhile! Has anyone lost large amounts of weight on this diet and how long will it take?

Hi everyone, I am 5'1 and I weigh 155 lbs. I am totally depressed about the way I look! I am starting the diet on tomorrow. I want to lose 30 lbs by the summertime. My problem is sunkist sodas. I will starve myself if I can have a sunkist. But, I will try my best to give them up for the next 12 day. Wish me luck and include me in your prayers. I need willpower and committment! Thanks!

Hello fellow 12 day dieters! I am on my 3rd round of the 12 days I haven't weighed myself in a week because i found myself getting on the scale every day which is not good. I decided to weigh myself at the end of the 12 days which is February 19. I noticed something about myself, when I was on my 2 dsys off and i got to eat whatever i wanted i found that when I ate more carbs I was hungry and I thought about food all of the time. I couldn't even go to sleep at bedtime so I ate a salad and I finally went to sleep. I also noticed that I eat less vegetables, and I drink less water. Also, i have trouble falling asleep when I began to add more carbs. I know now what i have to do...make this a way of life for me. I've been researching on the internet about the "low carb way of life" and I found a lot of info online. I believe my body needs only a small amount of carbs to run efficiently. Since I been on the grapefruit diet I feel better, I'm finally sleepy at bedtime, I drink lots of water, I eat vegetables every day and I only eat when I'm hungry. The only thing I need to improve on is my exercising. I work so much that when I come home late at night it's hard for me to get on that treadmill. I have to find a way to get more exercise in. Also I'm responding to Godsproperty question, I know u said u like sunkist soda, they offer a diet version try that. Also, how is your water intake? I find that when I drink diet soda, I don't drink enough water. I replace water witht the diet drink. So, mostly I drink water all day and I may drink diet tea with my dinner. I may drink a diet soda maybe once or twice a month. I know its hard but we have to think of our health and our life. I don't want to die because of the way I eat. My addiction was to cookies. I gave them up cold turkey. The longer I eat the right way the more my body and pallete is getting used to eating this way. I find that I'm no longer craving cookies. When I go to the market I try to avoid going down the junk food aisles which was hard for me at first. I am trying to change the way my mind thinks because losing weight has a lot to do with "our minds". Okay, I'm gonna end this post. Like I said before we need each other for support. Any questions or comments please feel free to ask. Good luck everyone, I'm praying for all of us.

I've been doing this for the past 6 days and have lost 6lbs. Well to be fair, I'm on the Atkins diet, but I incorporated the grapefruit. I only eat the grapefruit twice a day, and 1/2 a grapefruit with each meal. Is it the Atkins making me lose weight or the grapefruit? Most likely the Atkins but that wont stop me from eating the grapefruit as it may help some too!

hi terri, grapefruit is very good at regulating blood sugar.which i think its meant to work.i think you would get better results eating an orange with a whole wheat sandwich.the fiber in the bread slows the fructose down, regulating steady insulin release.give it a whirl.

We are seeing results in our house, but it is difficult to stick to. I like to cook and still have 2 children at home so sometimes that helps and other times it hinders.
I started on 3/1 and as of today I have lost 6 lbs. Woot! My husband has only lost 3, but he has 2 cups of coffee at breakfast with a total 14 tsp of sugar plus cream, and that is his choice to go slower. I don't like coffee so it isn't a problem for me. I miss bread and pasta frown
I have added an ounce of cheese and handful of nuts for a snack (I teach school and get very hungry)and if I am home and hungry between meals, I have a glass of grapefruit juice.
I add many ingredients to our salads for variety. At night I am certain to drink a glass of skim milk. we both can't wait until our cheat days next weekend!

in and I will just add some cheese, green onions and peppers. For lunch I will have a greek salad and steak and for supper I will have a chicken breast and vegetables. I will find it hard for the first few days not snacking that is my biggest problem and also not having any fruit. I will keep you posted on how my progress is going and hopefully you can do the same. Hi Telma, this is the diet that I'm following but I have increased my grapefruit juice to 8 ounces. I'm sure that what ever grapefruit you bought will work just fine, and don't be ashamed of yourself when you go out I'm sure that you look great. I think that we are sometimes to hard on ourselves and we think that we look worse than we actullay do. Here is the diet that I'm following

12 days on – 2 days off

Breakfast
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
2 Eggs (any style)
2 Slices Bacon
Lunch
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
Meat (any style, any amount)
Salad (any kind of dressing)
Dinner
1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
Meat (any style, any amount) (fish may be substituted for meat)
Vegetables (any green, yellow, or red vegetables cooked in butter or any seasoning)
Bed Time Snack
1 glass tomato juice or 1 glass Skim milk

Vegetables Allowed
Red onions, green onions, bell peppers, radishes, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, peas.

Vegetables to Avoid
White onions, potatoes, celery.

Find other high protein meal ideas here.

Instructions

At any meal you may eat until you are full – until you can’t eat any more.
Don’t eliminate anything from the diet, especially don’t skip bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn fat.
The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
Cut down on caffeine – it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to 1 cup per meal at mealtime.
Don’t eat between meals. If you eat the combination of food suggested you will not be hungry.
Note that the diet completely eliminates sugar and starches, which are lipids and form fat. Fat doesn’t form fat; it helps burn it. You can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.
Do not eat desserts, bread, and white vegetables or sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salad, or vegetables. Eat until you are stuffed. The more you eat of the proper combination of food, the more you lose.

Take care,
