Fat Smash Diet

Summary

Detox for 9 days, eating mainly fruits. Then, eat 4-5 meals a day and exercise.

Description

Initially, during the 9 day detox, you eat mainly just fruits and vegetables. Then, you shift to allowing more foods. You are allowed to eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, seafood, lean meat, and sugar substitutes. You avoid sweets, alcohol, refined grains, fried food, fatty meats, and fatty salad dressings.

Regular exercise is a big part of this diet as well.

You don't have to count calories and you aren't limited in how much you eat. Though, overeating is not recommended.

History

The "Fat Smash Diet" was created by Dr. Ian Smith who has a strong history in the media. He's the a medical contributor on ABC's "The View", a medical columnist for Men's Health magazine, and the diet expert on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club." He has also been on various radio show and written articles for major newspapers and magazines. He has degrees from Harvard, Columbia, and University of Chicago (medical school).

Criticism

The idea of "detoxing" has no scientific meaning or basis. The book contains recipes, but some have too much salt.

On the nine days of detox I lost 5 pounds, my husband lost 5 pounds, and my daughter lost 7 1/2 pounds. We started our diet on August 18, 2006. As of today's date September 6, 06, I have lost 11 pounds. I would of lost more but I didn't exercise the first 5 days. Soledad H. El Monte, CA

Let's see- you eat tons of fruits or vegetables and you lose weight. Wow what a wonder!!
what you have done is decrease your caloric intake and if you have or have not increased your exercise your going to lose some weight but it will max out after 1-2 weeks- its called fluid loss. if you continue to eat only fruit and veggies your fat is broken down then your muscle ( you have not had any proteins- muscle tissue needs them). its the same as if you "splurged and purged" or just quit eating.
Gimme a break - lose weight- EAT SMALLER PORTIONS and EXERCISE- This is the ONLY PROVEN
weight loss in over 5000 years. simple math- to lose weight decrease caloric intake and or increase caloric burn up (ie exercise).

I'm on day 7 of the detox and I feel great. I go to gym for at least an hour each day and I do 45 min of cardio and 15 min of abs. You can eat more than just fruit and veggies. I made a batch of veggie chili b/c you can eat beans. I make smoothies b/c you can have low fat milk and yogurt. Salads, spanish brown rice and beans, oatmeal, egg whites and slew of other things can be eaten you just have to take a second and be creative. The key to this diet is to EAT EVERY THREE HOURS and EXERCISE. Those 2 things will be the key to your weight loss. Everyone needs carbs to survive, this book educates on what you should be eating, portion control, and is extremely realistic about having a slice of pizza, and dessert or even a cappucino.

This is my second day on Phase 1. What it is teaching me all over again is actually being aware of everything that goes into my mouth and how much I was slipping little things like chocolate, extra crackers and that extra glass of wine each night....so it has been good for me and my awareness.
The coffee in the AM, I still have my one cup, but have followed everything else perfectly. I love a challenge, and mentally its interesting.

I lost 14 pounds on phase one. This was very hard to do but you would think only eating those few things you should loss weight. I am now on my second week of phase two and have not lost nothing. I am going to see how much I loss by the end of this phase to see if it is real. Seem like you loss all of it in the first phase and nothing after.

I have just started Phase 1. I do not like plain yogurt. I have been adding one Splenda packet and it has improved the taste a lot. Are sugar substitutes prohibited in this phase. It is mentioned in the section outlining what new foods to introduce in Phase 2 under sweenteners but I don't think it was referred to in the Phase 1 section. How can Splenda be harmful or prevent weight loss? Still I would hate to jeopardize weight loss for one little oversight. It is really hard for me to lose, even on a restricted caloric intake.

I have completed almost two months of the Fat Smash Diet. I started November 7, which means I followed the diet fairly well even through the holidays. Yes, I did take some liberties at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but followed the diet very closely with those exceptions. I have not exercised, but have just joined a gym. My loss to date is 15 lbs, and I was amazed when I last weighed. I had no idea I had lost 4 lbs. through the holidays. The thing I have noticed mostly is my energy level has been elevated, once I got past the detox. The 9 day detox was very difficult for me, as the lack of caffeine gave me very bad headaches after a few days. My husband has been on the diet with me and has also lost 12 lbs. He usually loses more than I do, but this past two weeks for some reason just worked really well for me. I have a good friend who turned me on to this diet and I am so thankful she did.

I just started im on my second day of detox and I was wondering the same thing about splenda. I havnt used sweetener, and it sucks, but I figure if im actually going to follow this diet, im going to do it to the T. I read somewhere that if its not on the list, you cant eat it. It also introduces it in the second phase so im just going to bite the bullet and have regular tea. I cut up some lemons and oranges and that helps. Also, I put those zero-calorie crystal light packets in my water occasionally. I am sure thats the same as artificial sweetener, but thats the only thing im allowing myself- so far so good. This is very hard because I am craving carbs like crazy but I just make sure I always have some fruit at hand to fight hunger pangs... Its hard for me to lose weight so im anxious to see if I will lose any after the 9days of detox!

I don't even use salt when making my veggies..just black pepper, minced garlic, ground/black lemon pepper. This morning made a smoothie using lowfat soy milk and fruit. For lunch i have a salad with tofu, chickpeas, blackbeans, asapargus, snow peas...with a little balsamic vinegar and oil. I worked out for 35 minutes on the treadmill plus abs...hanging on thru the weekend will be tough though!

You are not supposed to have 4 cups of egg whites. It should be 4 egg whites and if you know that you are carb sensitive it may be wise to have less rice and milk.

You're not supposed to eat everything on the list in a single day. The list just shows the maximum amount you can intake. Almost anybody would gain weight eating 4 cups of egg whites,2 cups of brown rice,2 cups of skim milk everyday. Have you people even read the book?

Right now as I speak I am jittering, literally. I threw up 5 or six times today, a couple of tablespoons each time. It looked like water, mixed with apple particles. My stomach is so jumbled and my legs can’t stand for long, because they shake. My starting weight was 148, and now Im down 146 today. I am scared and sick. I am starting the diet tomorrow although I don't look at it as a diet. I look at it as a healthy way of eating. I know most of the weight from the first 9 days will be water weight however it will be weight loss none the less. I want to lost 90 pounds however I am on a quest to lose 20 asap so I can have surgery for this hernia that I was diagnosed with.
I wanted to know if anyone has had any problems with constipation. I have been eating healthier for almost two months but after I lost 11 pounds in two weeks I started having problems with constipation. My doctor and surgeon suggested and prescribed as sorts of laxatives and meds but nothing worked. It very painful cause my stomach is so hard and I am naueous almost everyday. A friend of mine is doing the extreme fat smash so she suggested I check it out. So here I am along with one of my sisters both eager to get started tomorrow. I am looking forward to the detox cause I want to cleanse my system. I am hoping it will help with the constipation as well.

Thank you anonymous. The day that I was jittery, I realized that all I had eaten was all fruits and vegetable. I had not had any protein items. I revised it a little to meet my needs of a small piece of wheat bread, and cooking the veggies, helps a lot. So far I have lost 6 pounds, and it is day 6 and I feel great. It’s crazy because I really do not crave honey buns, twinkles, and Doritos. I look forward to bottled water and a salad with all the right fixings. People say that my skin is clearing, energy is way up, and I sense that I even feel lighter. This is no way a diet; it is indeed building blocks to healthy living!

I love the fatsmach diet. I did 2 cycles of the diet a total of 6 months. The 1st cycle I lost 25 lbs and the second cycle I lost 15 lbs (lost a little of my focus). It has been a great benefit to me and it shows you how to be disciplined, but also brings reality (i.e. the occasional slip up). You will plateau with the weight loss but you have to press through it. There is a section where it teaches you to fool the body persay and to change things up a little.

I lost 30 lbs on this diet the first month. The fact is if you eat less and move more you're going to lose weight. Sometimes it's easier for people (like myself) to have a plan to follow. I lost 10lbs the first week. Lost alot of water weight. (I think i have an allergy to gluton) so when i cut out the breads and pasta's i feel and look so much better. This diet is simple to follow and it sets up good eating habits. I was one that didn't eat breakfast, overate at lunch and then ate a late dinner...it was hard adjusting to eating all thoughout the day, but once i did, i didn't feel the need to binge and purge as often. I think this book and diet is a great way to change your eating habits. It's a way of life, not a diet. Diets will fail you.

First of all, don't do this diet without reading the book. There's also a forum you can join, google for it.

I lost 17 pounds before I had to suspend. It is a lot to maintain, prepping all those small meals, but it was effective. Key is exercise -- if you do not keep up the exercise, you're not going to get anywhere on this diet (or any other diet). I had a migraine the second day of detox but that's not unusual -- after that I was fine. Getting enough protein is critical, so eat those egg whites, that's FOUR egg whites, not four cups. Beans and tofu are also good. Tofu takes whatever flavor you give it. Salsa, roasted garlic, fresh herbs, lemon and lime juice are all great flavorings that fall within the diet.

Re splenda, there is a theory that your insulin levels increase in expectation of getting something sweet. If you don't supply sugar, but have elevated insulin, you're not doing your body any favors. Break that cycle -- have some fruit with whatever you used to artificially sweeten.

And yes, to all of those who say "duh" about this plan, some people need structure. This diet provides that. If you expect some other miracle cure, you're living in a dream world, and if you don't need to diet, what are you doing on this site, anyway?

I started using the principles of this diet 4 days ago, not just to lose weight but as a spiritual cleansing as well. I think we all need to take a break from things of norm to focus on what's important-our health. I haven't done too much exercise because of my schedule but I will start on the weekend. I do feel like I lost some pounds and my metabolism has increased a great deal. I plan to stay on the detox phase for of at least a total of 14 days just to continue with the discipline of eating fruits and veggies.

I am starting phase one today. Will post again after the nine days. I did this approx. 4 months ago and lost 11 pounds in nine days. I felt sluggish at first and after day four I felt better than I have felt in years and I had tons of energy. I also exercised daily. The key I learned to make this diet work for me is meal planning. I took oatmeal, baggies of salad, cut up fruit and veggies, and water to work w/ me as well as jazzed up a red bean and brown rice recipe w/ onions, pepper, garlic, bay leaf and I was never hungry. All I drank was water, water, water. Now there was a day I went to work unprepared and I was hungry with all the temptation around me and learned my lesson. So take it one day at a time and prepare yourself and you can do it. What I love about this diet is it teaches you how to eat and stay healthy and if you fall off the wagon just get back up and start again.

Don't get much time to myself. But I do stay busy, to say the least. I would love to lose 15lbs. A bit of depression from normally life situations and I guess I have lost my footing. But now I am trying to get back on track. The holidays didn't help. Along with "that time of month" and I was eating anything that wasn't nailed down. So day one, and I remain hopeful. I will return with updates. Thanks for being here!

I haven't gotten the book to read yet and this is the first place I've seen someone really stressing that part, so stupid question of the day: the 1 cup of oatmeal and 2 cups of rice maximum... is that before or after cooking? (I'm thinking *after* because for someone my size that'd be a heck of a lot of food even as a maximum.)

I'm thinking that brown rice will we a staple in my diet when I do this - I experimented awhile back and was cooking rice with veggies:
-1 cup of brown rice in ~1 1/2 tsp olive oil, plus a chicken boullion cube in the water to add some flavor,
- add a cup or two of cooked frozen mixed veggies.
- simmer about a half cup of edame (soybeans) for a few minutes, then add about a cup of mixed frozen veggies (the ones that have peas, carrots, lima beans, corn). I drain the veggies and mix them with the rice after the rice is cooked. If you cook for several people, make extra, it microwaves nicely in small portions and has good protein content due to the soybeans. Health food stores and Trader Joes would have edame if you have trouble finding them in the local supermarket.

The basis of this diet is really easy to understand but I like the structure. I have really started to realize how much bad food I have been eating. Eating four or five times a day is working well because I am not completely starving at dinner. Before I would be so hungry that I would overeat or make poor food choices.

I'm on Day 9 of Phase 1 and finding this diet extremely easy to follow. I like to cook so I've made several recipes during this Phase which I found at Peertrainer.com: corn chowder, meatless chile, bean and tomato salad, rice pudding, baked oatmeal, smoothies, pizza (crust made from beans, oatmeal, spices...), etc.. I'd recommend some variety along with the unlimited fruits and veggies. I sneaked in a weigh on Day 6 and had lost 6 pounds.

I'm thinking of starting over with phase 1. my birthday is in 2 1/2 months.. would like to be around 125# but in addition to the diet.. I started on the treadmill all winter and now that it's nice i bike about 10 miles 3-4 days a week...

For example, brocolli, green beans, and etc. I do not like plain yogurt either so I am just eating plain fruit salad. Need some creative receipes.

CAN I DRINK FUZE TEA DRINKS WHILE ON THIS DIET I CAN'T DRINK HERBAL TEA?
Anonymous
posted 9-Dec-2008 3:56pm

I don't know what fuze tea drinks are but I think on phase 1 you cannot have anything but water and like two cups lowfat milk.

I'm on day 5 and so far have lost 4 lbs, I feel full with less food and not so bloated anymore- I don't miss meat much honestly, but I still kind of miss bread lol.

And yes people, eat all the stuff, only fruits and veggies isn't enough, eat the egg and brown rice and milk daily. I also eat lentils and things to help keep me going.

Here is a sample menu for me:
Breakfast
Oatmeal
piece of fruit such as banana or apple or orange

Snack
Piece of fruit

Lunch
Lentil soup with large salad (usually all sorts of veggies than a low fat dressing)

Snack
cucumber and tomatoe salad- no dressing, splash of lemon juice

Dinner
brown rice with grilled or steamed veggies

Snack
Fruit

It's a lot of food but I don't feel hungry at all and I'm still losing- I haven't gone to the gym much though- normally I get 3x a week in.

Does anyone know if this would be an unhealthy idea for me to pursue? I would like to learn how to eat healthfully and be fit so that it will last my entire life, and this sounds like a great method. Also, looking at what I have found online, I think I naturally eat about the same amount but in less healthful foods, so it sounds really safe so far (how is switching from burgers and grilled cheese to veggies and fruit gonna hurt anyone?), but I just want to be sure. Any advice?

Well, to anyone interested in my findings thus far regarding teens/healthy weight etc and this workout (see my above comment), I spoke to my gym teacher today, he's done alot with this kind of thing. He looked over some of the information I'd gathered online (I made a printout of my findings), listened to what I had to say, and said that he didn't see anything wrong with it. However, he definately recommended speaking to my doctor first, as a doctor would be better certified to make a judgement on this &c &c. Just thought I'd post that in case anyone else was wondering the same. I'll probably post what my doctor has to say as well grin

To TAM (about Ranch Dressing). Yes, it's bad to have Ranch dressing. It's not part of this diet, because this is a weight loss diet. Stop trying to get people to justify your weaknesses. Part of a diet is developing life style changes, which include giving up foods that assisted in you being overweight or obese to begin with.

It's up to you if you want to continue using fat ladeled dressings or not. But just remember. . .if you're not willing to give it up, you can't bitch about that fat ass you have lurking behind you!

It's all or nothing. Don't half-ass this! Don't you think you're worth it?!

Of all days there was NO salad. However, I was prepared and ate strawberries and was very satisfied. I'm already losing cravings for sweets. My weakness has always been the white potato (FRENCH FRIES)!!!! I also noticed that I'm not as puffy in the face. I am very gassy though and I'm constipated. I just started my Phase 1 today. I have had this book on the shelf for almost 3 years until I read essence.com last week. It featured a woman who started the diet last April and lost 125 pounds in 9 months. That made me dust off my book and get ready. I purchased the foods that I needed, signed up for the 50 million pound challenge and started my journey today.

I have never tried a "diet" before and there are a million of them. Some say they don't work and that's why I never tried them. Some may work others, some may not. I'm going to give it a try. I have a gym membership and equipment at home. I have all of the tools and know how to use them. I just have to stop being lazy and just do it if I want to get healthier and live a lot longer. For lunch I had brown rice and I decided to mix onions, green peppers, tomatoes, garlic and red beans to put over the rice. Then I had some carrots. Pretty tasty.

Today is only day one so I'm glad I looked at some more information online. I have a gym membership and actually started a Kickboxing class last week so I'm going to attend today use that as my exercise today. Its 60 minutes so that should be perfect!

I was the Anonymous that spoke about the veggie baked beans. I absolutely love them, but the deciding factor is when you look at the nutrition facts. The FS diet encourages very little sweets and pretty much none during Phase I except for what you get in fruits. If you look at the sugar content, it's relatively high. I have used other canned beans and legumes, but read the label for content. There is a lot of food out there, but I'd have to say brown rice is the saving grace of Phase I.

My husband and I enjoyed the Easter weekend as well. We were back on track yesterday. We decided we would not weigh ourselves this week. We started Phase II last Wednesday, 4/8. My husband actually lost 17.3 lbs during detox. I lost 9.6. We have truly been inspired. We are going to the gym 5 days a week; so I am sure we will make up for enjoying Easter. The one thing Dr. Ian mentions many times about this diet is the fact that it is so forgiving. Don't lose sight on what you have accomplished thus far and look forward to where we are going!! You are correct, the brown rice and oatmeal were the saving grace of Phase I.

I started the diet on Friday April 17 and am in the middle of my 4th day.
The rice, beans and oatmeal are what keep me sane. 2 cups is a lot of rice so I'm only eating 1 and having soy sauce helps.
This morning I made an egg white omelet with spinach, mushrooms, red peppers and low fat mozzarella- you can have low fat cheese or the veggie burgers (you can have 1.5 slices so I bought low fat string cheese and use only one. It was actually really good.

Am I the only one who thinks 3tbsp of salt is a lot? I'e been allowing 1tspn per day and that is plenty - and I'm a salt-a-holic!

a good snack choice is the 7 salitines listed in the back with a hummus spread

How do you make the sweet potaoe fries without oil?
Can you have oil oil in the detox phase? that part confuses me

Here are a couple suggestions:

cut up yellow squash, zuccini, corn, red peppers, onions, (roasted) green chili and grill(in an aluminum foil pouch) eat with brown rice. I ate that for dinner last night and it was delicious and very filling. Might be heavy on starch though...

I live in the SW so I am more than happy to eat pinto beans because Mexican food is a staple at my house. This might sound gross to you, but put beans (whole, not refried), lettuce, tomato, onions and red chili (make chili by re hydrating chili pods and blending with garlic, cumin and some water). I make the beans in a crock pot so I don't have to worry about whatever they add to canned beans. This is basically a Frito Pie without the Fritos or cheese. If you live anywhere near NM or even Texas you know what I am talking about. try it!

Thank you anonymous for the receipes. My husband and I are on the third week of phase 2. We do find ourselves limiting meat. This is the great thing about this diet. You can do the "detox" phase or parts of it at any time. Congratulations everyone. Keep up the great work. DeShon - stay away from the concession stands. If you have to give in, go for plain popcorn and lots of water. The sugarless gum really works to help stop cravings or take your mind off of something you can not have. We weigh ourselves tomorrow, I'll be sure to check in.

I also did not have a bowel movement during that time so I think this could have been a factor. However, since beginning cycle 2 i am doing much better. I have been going to the gym everyday and my clothes are extremely loose. I will report again on Monday to let you know how it goes.

Have any of you actually read the book? You can NOT have boca/veggie burgers, nor can you have fried rice, any sort of fries, no cheese, no noodles, no dried fruit, no coffee, no soda, no bread, no meat, no fish, no nuts...NOTHING.

Read the book so you can get the real skinny on the diet, don't just assume you can eat those things.

You are allowed on PHASE1/DETOX:

2 cups skim milk per day
2 6oz containers yogurt (like yoplait light, 100 calories!)
4 Egg whites
1 cup cooked oatmeal
2 cups cooked brown rice
Any herbs/spices you like

unlimited fruits and veggies except for potatoes and avacado. NOTHING canned. it must be raw/grilled/baked. Chick peas, beans, lentils are good sources of protein.

Hey ladies! Reading this forum has been very insightful and encouraging. I'm going to start my phase I tomorrow. I'm a very picky eater so I'll probably stick to the basic fruits and veggies. It's going to be REALLY hard eating oatmeal without brown sugar, but I'm really going to try! Am I understanding correctly that we can eat fried rice? I know it's nothing but old cooked rice with veggies and maybe I can put a little egg white in it. Also, what type of brown rice can I get that will cook up nice and FAST? I've tried buying brown rice in the past and the bag said to let it cook for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES!

1 1/2 slices of low fat cheese OR 1 veggie burger without he bread...

also in the snack section on pages 142-143 6 snack crackers are allowed with low fat jelly or just 7 plain salt crackers....

so Im not sure why you think you cant have the veggie burger..you can...you just cant have the cheese and the veggie burger....

Krusty the cat

Just so you don't confuse other readers... like DeShon said you can have either 1.5 slices of low fat cheese or a veggie burger. It is clearly listed on the page. In the snack section it also says you can have 10 almonds or 1tsp of sunflower seeds for a snack. The crackers with jelly is a phase 2 snack, but you can have 7 saltines for a phase 1 snack. It doesn't specify that the oatmeal is one cup cooked although that is plenty. You can also have some butter and olive oil so if you want to use it to cook your rice it should be ok. You can slao have 2 cups herbal tea to keep from getting too bored. Oh and don't forget you can have 1 packet of artificial sweetener if you so choose. The diet is nowhere near as harsh as you make out to be.

Lou, the bathroom thing into Phase II happened to my husband also. We just finished Phase II. We begin Phase III today. I have lost 20.4 pounds in four weeks! My husband has lost 23 pounds in four weeks. This is definitely working for us.

The veggie burgers got us through phase I. We also did, veggie chicken and veggie ground beef for sloppy joes (no bread of course). The veggie saugage works great in 15 bean soup. You learn to be creative and I never thought I would look so forward to having brown rice.

DeShon, I would suggest you alternate between Phase I and II. You need to be sure to get enough protein. Protein adds muscle and muscle burns fat. You want to change it up a little bit, otherwise your body will get use to the same thing. In the end, I say do what works best for you! If it works, go for it!

Hang in there everyone! I agree with being sexy by July!!

The veggie burgers are what get me through to but I must say my bowl of oatmeal along with my infamous veggie omelete(mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and low fat cheese but thats only if I dont plan on having the veggie burger) is what saves me...

that and all the smoothies I make...:)

and please dont forget the sweet potatoe..boil them..bake them...throw a smidget of butter on them and you truly have a wonderful meal!

but the savior for me is smoothies...my favorite one is banana and mango...I drink about two a day....put some ice..a splash of milk and half a packet of splenda...DELICIOUS!

also remember on phase one you can have a jello smoothie snack or low fat granola bars...these help as well.....

You are supposed to eat your food as fresh as possible, but I don't think canned beans is going to throw you too off. Just check for excess salt, sugar, and fats. I think those are the things that mght throw you off.

DeShon,

Dr. Ian recommends to do at least one day of Phase I a week during Phase III. I do not see anything wrong with alternating weeks. These types of things will boost your metabolism. I say try it and see what happens.

I am a tad bummed out because my thyroid is out of wack and causing my heart rate to go crazy when I am at the gym. They say this is common for women after having a baby. The only thing I can do it walk in the neighborhood; and with this I must be careful. I was really in a good rhythm and doing really well going to the gym. Hopefully, I will not be out for long. I will not be weighing myself this week.

Just remember they also show commercials for bowflex trying to say those rock hard bodies were achieved in 60 days with their product. Marketing and advertising. Ignore it or it will make you crazy.

In Phase III you CAN have a glass of wine every night :) !!!!!
I'm waiting for Phase IV where I can have a slice of pizza. Phase III is a little scary because you can eat so many new things like sherbet and cookies. I find that I have a good handle on portion control and I think that is the point. One glass of wine a night is actually good for you, no?

Dani, if you were a regular coffee/soda drinker you will have caffeine withdrawal. either way stick with it... you will feel better than you have in a long time within a few days. After being on this for a month I go there every Saturday with no problems. This past weekend I went and sampled turkey bacon because I can have it now. I took a bite and spit ot out. Same with a chicken nugget covered in bbq. A CHICKEN NUGGET COVERED IN BBQ!!! yeah, that was a cheat item, but it tasted so bad I spit it out. Amzing what eating fresh and healthy food does for you. I also ate lots of spinach salad and squash medley. grilled red peppers got me through too.
good luck!

I've been doing cardio 4-5 times a week for maybe 1/2 hour and weights 4-5 times/week. I know you aren;t supposed to do weights until Phase IV, but I enjoy them more than cardio and I'm seeing great results even though the scale is slow. I've been on this diet a month and I've lost only 9 pounds, but I'm wearing clothes I haven't worn in over 2 years.

DeShon, you figure out if I can have corn tortillas yet? I'm phase II :)

Keep the faith and work hard - it will come

Last night was by far my best night so far. I ate the pizza that you make out of chick peas, egg whites and oatmeal, with a strawberry banana smoothie...was awesome!!! I also got a hot air popper and made some popcorn with no oil, lightly salted it with a bit of molly mcbutter and it may just be the peace of resistance for me. Day 4 of phase I today and I am feeling confident that I can do it. YIPEE!!!

Today is day 5 for me. I weighed myself this morning and had lost 3 lbs in 4 days. I was hoping it would show more or maybe less so I would have an excuse to quit. Going camping for the next 4 days and it doesn't seem to be as much fun if I can't eat chips and drink.

YOu can have 10 almonds/day in phase I

you can have an alcoholic beverage/day in Phase III

I've only lost 1 more pound since going into Phase III... and I'm not enjoying that at all (Been in Phase III for 2 weeks). Hello everyone, it has been a while since I checked in. I was pretty bummed when I could not go to the gym. Amazingly, I still lost another 7 pounds on Phase III. I am not okay to go back to the gym and I am going to do detox for 9 days starting today. This will boost my metabolism. My husband is doing it with me.

I am glad to see everyone is hanging in there. It does get tough, especially around holidays and celebrations! We allow a cheat day after detox and they seem to help a lot.

DeShon and Lou, glad to see you hanging in there. I appreciate all of the responses on this page; it provides a source of inspiration when things do get tough!

I will do a better job of checking in and responding...

Okay for all of the idiots on here who keep saying things like "duh you're going to lose weight if you starve yourself." how about actually reading up on the subject first. This is not even really a diet it's a lifestyle change guide for people who need more structure. Also you are allowed more than just fruits and veggies you just eat mostly fruits and veggies for the first week which is not unhealthy at all. It's actually better to slowly prep your body for such a dramatic change.

so please stop posting mindless comments on here

not really a pro...but for me the best thing to do with brown rice is to add veggies to it...make it like a stir fry...I add onions....mixed veggies...and egg whites to mine...and I try my best to simulate chinese fried veggie rice(but of course it cant be fried)..but try stir fry...use pam olive oil(zero calories)....

and someone pointed out on this board(I think Fran) that you can do the fast an additional week...HOWEVER...you will begin to decrease when it comes to weight loss b/c you will need protein..and protein is added in phase two....

I hope this helps...

Danielle...I ate flavored yogurt..just make sure its low fat....

NikkiB...girl what!?!?! Im STILL trying to refocus....however..I have gotten back into exercising...so I am not going to weigh myself until sunday..hopefully I will be back on track...

Fran...that aint nothing but water!! however..my 3.5 pounds..now thats weight....LOL!

Cant lie...right now Im b/tween phase one and two....so hopefully the going back and forth will shock my body and get it back in gear...

I agree the stir "sauteed" fried rice works great. We also do Beef and Broccoli without the Beef. It is delicious with brown rice.

Creativeness is key. By the time you get to day 9, you feel like you've become a pro.

Checking in very disappointed this morning. After 9 hard days of re-do detox, my husband loss 7 pounds and I only loss 1. I think I am retaining water. I have to be! Timing is everything. If you do detox at the wrong time of the month, the end will not look so good. I hope everything will kick in and my numbers will look better next week. I have to add meat back in my diet today. We'll see how it goes.

Maah - this may be your problem as well. It sounds like your activity level is great. How is your eating? Do you feel like you're losing inches. I know I can feel the difference from ten days ago. Hang in there.

Maah - 4 pounds in 8 days is amazing...that is two pounds a day. Certainly nothing to frown upon.
Stay focused and keep with it. It is all you can do. I started in April and it is now June - I didn't start to really notice the difference until a couple weeks ago. You'll get there. As cliche as it sounds, good things take time and it sounds like you are right on track.

Fran - around my period I gained weight and felt like a blob again. I think you are spot on with retaining water and what not. I bet next week you'll look and feel better. It happened to me. You'll hit your 30 pound mark---and if it takes an extra week who cares? working to make yourself look and feel better is worth the wait, not weight ha ha

Stick with it girls! We'll get there

Fran- I think you're right. That might be the problem. I'm trying to eat only things that we are allowed and so far so good.tomorrow I can add some meat and that's good. I'm actually on birth control pills and it may be somewhat responsible for water retaining. I'm sure next week you'll do great. All of us before period are lumpy dumpy. nothing to lose sleep on it.

Lou- I'm happy that you started to see the results. Hopefully after couple of weeks I'll see some change as well.for now I'm just proud that I am doing something positive for my life and my body.thanks anyway for your words. I feel much better.

Hello all

Hey Fran and Lou...

I dont know what my problem is...but I do know that I have fallen OFF the bandwagon...
HELP ME!!!!!

Ok it all started monday when I took my son to a braves game...well I had the grande nachos...(dont even want to tell you whats on there)
and then I thought..well its one day and I will do better all week...
and I THOUGHT I did...
then I stepped on the scale this morning, and saw I had gained another 3 pds..which puts me back to a 29 pd weight loss instead of getting closer to 40pds by the 4th of July like I wanted...
so what did I do...
what did I do???
I know the suspense is killing you....:)
well...
I got my but up and went to the gym this morning at 4am(like Ive done ALL week)...but guess what? I forgot about the crab legs with potatoes I had at 11pm on tuesday night..the wine to go with it(who knows how many glasses you drink when socializing)....forgot about the subway sandwiches I ate three times this week...(although not bad that is ALOT of carbs)..forgot about the 20plus ounce coffee I had EVERYDAY this week....the rice(that wasnt white) and the 4 cookies I had....

so yes..I exercised everyday this week...but my eating habits were wayy off..so it proved to me that it truly does matter what you eat...no matter how much you may exercise..you have GOT to eat right..and this doesnt mean a treat every now and then...but as I look over my food journal from this week..I have to be honest with myself....I did a LOT of treating this week..

Im glad to report though..unlike old times..instead of getting depressed(ok I cant lie..it threw me for a minute) I remembered that the 4th is 3 weeks away and I can still lose some weight before then....

SO..like I said..got up at 4..and Im back on phase one detox..instead of trying to do me..Im going to do something I rarely do...FOLLOW DIRECTIONS..from a to z....

and I know victory will be had....

Fran and Lou..Im on the pill and rarely get a period but I can feel when Im retaining...so lets not give up...its water...try putting a tablespoon of sugar free cranberry juice in a glass of water..its a natural diueretic...it works...

for everyone...Here is a new quote I read this week that I found to be mind blowing:
"I get pretty impatient with people who are able-bodied but are somehow paralyzed for other reasons"
-Christopher Reeve(superman)

WOW...here's a man who was paralyzed in a freak accident from the neck down..yet dedicated his life to stem cell research and NEVER gave up.....

it made me feel really bad...so I say to all of you...WE CAN DO THIS...as long as you can get up in the morning..we can win this war...we can become healthier..and we can become HAPPIER..b/c it all comes as a total package...

so in my words..LETS GET IT

sorry for this being so long..

Peace...

DeShon - glad to hear you're sticking to it. It is much harder to go through detox when you have already been through it. It will definitely be worth it. You do notice the difference in your food choices. You're right, don't beat yourself up; just get back on track and don't look back! You can kick butt by the 4th.

I have noticed it is harder now to lose. It is easy to lose at first because of all the water weight. So the clothes are not getting as big as fast. So we're kicking it up a notch or two at the gym.

I too had a some cake and apple cobbler this week. (I could not decide, so I took a little of each one. But, I'm done cheating until next weekend. smile I look forward to the one cheat day. It gives me something to strive for towards the end of the week. I weigh in tomorrow morning, so I will definitely keep everyone posted.

My husband is really doing well. We have created a maniac. He is the one keeping me in line. Although I bought some snack size chips for a bake sale and church, and he admitted he was not strong enough to keep the leftovers in the house. I promised to hide them. (I guess I better do it when I get home tonight. :)

Congratulaions everyone!!! Let's push and see what we can do by July 4th! Then we can celebrate a little for the holiday.

Hello everyone!

Congratulations on the six pounds Andie! Keep up the great work!

Maah as or unsweetened cereal, it depends on the phase you are in. If you are on Phase I, you can only have Oatmeal. You can sweeten with with Splenda.

Phase II you can move to whole grain cereals like Cheerios, Life, etc.

I decided not to weigh myself last week. I thought since I did not do as well the weekend prior, it would not be wise to weigh myself. Tragically, one of my employees passed away at home and I was the one who went to his home when he did not show up to work. This has been quite a bit to deal with in the last week. I've been doing my best to hit the gym and stick to the plan as much as possible. I have a new attitude this morning and I know I will be kicking it into high gear. My husband continues to do great.

I will go ahead and weigh myself on Thursday and see how we are looking. The 4th is next week and I would at least like to be at my 30 pound mark! After redoing Detox, everything kinds of runs together. I do not believe my husband and I consciously entered phase 4. Also, since my weight loss is starting to slow down, I need to adjust my food again. This is another reason I am not losing as much as I did in the beginning. I can not eat as much fruits and vegetables as I did previously and loose the same amount of weight. It is not easy for the girls at all!! My husband on the other hand looks awesome. At last check he has lost about 41 pounds. His whole body has changed. It is not fair!!

I have decided I am going to try adding the protein to my water (Biggest Loser) before I work out. This will be helpful as well. I am not getting enough protein.

DeShon - How you doing?

Lou - Have not heard from you. Hope all is well.

Sorry for the long entry, but I must admit, I look forward to checking in especially on Mondays. I get a jolt of encouragement for the week!

All the best to everyone and have a great week!!

Like you I decided not to weigh myself this week either....Fathers day is hard for me b/c my dad passed away from a sudden heart attack last year (2/8/08)...although it was still a nice day....(took my sons father out)...I still felt really sad..and my eating reflected that...I keep a food journal and was really honest with myself..I did horrible the ENTIRE weekend...however...I did exercise 6 DAYS last week..and Ive exercised so far everyday this week....

yeah its extremely UNFAIR how men breathe and seem to lose weight...but it is what it is ...either we(women) except it and push harder..or we stay unhealthy and overweight...at this point in my life failure is no longer an option..diabetes, cancer, heart disease..all run in my family...Im 33 years old and this weight battle has been an ongoing life issue...and Im tired of it....

Thank you DeShon!

Unfortunately, I had to weigh myself afterall because of my personal trainer. I gained 0.6 pounds. I am going to modify my diet a little more because I think between the problems with my thyroid levels and other hormones, I have just hit a little bit of a plateau. I am kicking up the cardio in my workout a little more. Outside of the cheating, we have pretty much still followed phase 3. I'll see what happens in the next week. By the way, my personal trainer thought the added protein in my water in the morning was a good idea. We do not want a whole lot because we are not trying to bulk up, but having some in the morning will help with energy levels and help to burn fat. I'll let you know how it goes.

We are going to have to put out an APB on Lou!! Lou where are you??

Hi EVERYONE!
Funny how it takes a week to prepare to be away from work for 5 days and it takes 2 weeks to catch up.

the diet. oh the diet! I think I'm on Phase IV. Actually, I'm just making better food choices and not eating so darn much
Hate to say it, but I've been too busy to be on Phase I or II. I lost 3 pounds this week so I must not messing up too bad. Actually, I've been so busy at work I've been skipping meals. I know, I know BAD BAD BAD.

I haven't measured myself with a tape measure in over a month. That is the real test because my 3-5 pound fluctuation might be water. Anyone doing this or checking body fat? My gym lost their body fat thingy (technically speaking) and I'm too cheap to buy my own. rats

Looks like everyone is chugging along and making gains (or losses ha ha). GOOD!

Hi Deshon! Sorry to hear about your misfortune, Fran.

I didn't hit the gym in over two weeks. I started back this week. Lord help me!

If anyone is looking for a cardio workout that will kick your butt into gear and lift it at the same time try the stair stepper. Holy smoke that thing works me half to death and I love it.

July is just around the corner and if you haven't hit the number on the scale you were hoping for...who cares? You've been focusing on YOU and as we women and moms know...that rarely happens. Be proud of what you HAVE accomplished and no worries over what you haven't.

Lou!!!

So glad to hear you're back and sounds like your doing pretty good. I'm so happpy!

You are right the stair stepper is no joke! It gives you a great intense workout and really gets the heart rate going. Since we have kicked up the cardio I KNOW I will see a difference next week!

Take care! :)

Hey Everyone..

Hey Lou and Fran...

UMMMMMM I walk past that stairstepper thingy EVERYTIME I go to the gym....I think I might try it since you both are raving about it...LOL!

All I can say is I was off last week..and I ate like I was off..last I weighed myself I gained 2.8 pounds..pulled my hamstring last week so I only exercised 3 days....

what more can I say..at least you both are in a "phase"...Im just all over the place...remixing it like my name is P Diddy or something..LOL!!

monday..back to work...hamstring healed..so back to the gym....I am making an effort to go to 5 CLASSES this week...

something isnt going right b/c I cant seem to lose anymore weight..so like Fran said...Im gonna kick up the cardio...veggies...and water...and protein..and pray it gives my body a boost...

the war continues...

Peace...

Hello everyone!

I think we have just hit a plateau and like you I did not do so well over the weekend. I am still going to the gym. This is a big plus! My personal trainer told me not to be discouraged because she started training weighing 115 wearing a size 11, after six weeks, she was 135 wearing a size 4. Keep up the work and I'm glad to hear you're back in the gym. I think it gets more difficult around holidays. However, this will be a hurdle you have to figure out what works best for you. Don't beat yourself up. Once we pull through the plateau, the weight will start coming off again.

Be very proud of what you have done thus far. Keep your eye on the prize at the end.

Have a great week!

God bless....
