Cambridge Diet

The Cambridge Diet is a low-calorie (low-carb & low-fat) diet that is initiated under the care of a counselor.

You start by visiting a counselor to develop the program that's right for you. Then, in the initial, weight loss, stage of the diet, you go on a very low calorie diet. Carbohydrates and fats are avoided. This phase is very intensive. You are encouraged to take it easy (limit exercise and rest as needed).

As you begin to lose weight and approach your goal weight, you gradually can eat more and more calories per day.

Various products are available from Cambridge Diet to help you stay within the guidelines. For example, nutrition bars, shakes, and soups.

You are encouraged to drink a lot of water as well (8 glasses a day).

During the 1960's, the Cambridge Diet was developed by Dr Alan Howard (a research scientist at the University of Cambridge) and Dr Ian McLean-Baird (of West Middlesex Hospital) in the United Kingdom.

Initially, the Cambridge Diet was used in weight loss clinics, but in the 1980's the diet was brought to the United States with commercial product offerings. This is the period when the diet was the most popular.

It can be hard for people starting this diet to stick to the very low calorie diet -- initially, about 500 calories per day. Also, it may not be healthy to eat so little. You may lose weight quickly, but you may gain it back just as fast.

I put 9ilbs on over xmas and decided to start back again. My day going ok so far am topping up on paracetamol to avoid th headaches. My tummy feeling a little sickly due to all the liquid. Can't wait for this week to be down, it gets so much easier the second week. I will keep you posted on my progress

I am on day 4 of CD, days 2 and 3 was quite a challenge for me. I have been drinking 4 or more litres of water per day and feel great for every day I get through! We can do this and will, every time I feel that I will cheat I just think about the reasons why I started CD and how good I will be looking 5 months from now. I have quite a way to go about 7 stones!!! My first weigh in is on Wednesday.

will keep you updated

Hi all, am on day 7 nd am really looking forward to my weigh-in tonight... its a great feeling when you know you have been really good and not cheated. Have been lucky, no head aches this time for week one which is a blessing. I will update you all tomorrow with my loss.

Satsyb - ihave tried every diet going and find this is the only one that works for me. The first week is the worst, but the average weight los of a stone a month is the best motivation ever...

Hi everyone im starting CD tomorrow and am a bit scared as its such a drastic change in diet. i have forgotten the feeling of hunger as i have been stuffing my face all day every day for so long now! really unhappy with my weight so really hope i have the strength and determination to do well! a friend has just lost 3 stone on it and i hope to lose the same. well done all of you for doing this, lets just think how good we will feel when we get to our targets x
posted 12-Jan-2011 7:23am

Hi Carly, you'll be fine, i found the best way to get over the hunger is to try to keep yourself busy, eat breakfast late which means its a shorter time frmae to wait for lunch and do the same with dinner. I also go to bed early for the first few days as it reduces the risk of temptation. I also drink loads of water which does tend to fill you up. Just remember no food will taste as good as you will feel by the time you loose your 3 stone...

Well done Boo!!!! so pleased for you! =D Well I am here on day 7 and so pleased that I have ressisted any tempting foods =) will get weighed later on today so will let you know how it goes.
Hi Carly, for me the 1st 4 days was the hardest keep at it because it really does get a lot easier.... I hardly feel hungry now, just the mental issues I have food can make it tempting sometimes but noway am I letting the food win, I want to look and feel great and I will!!!!

Will keep you posted gl peeps x

Fabulous bubbles... that is such an amazing achievement. I faltered yesterday and had a big meal last night. It was one of those things whereby i wanted it and am glad i had it. However back on it again today and looking forward to loosing more weight.

I hope your first day went well Carly if you decided to go ahead with it
posted 13-Jan-2011 9:13am

Thanks Boo. I guess you enjoyed it and thats what matters most and also you are right back into the diet =) Do you start all over with the ketosis once you do that ? I found the first 4 days pretty hard. I may decide to enjoy a proper meal say once every 6 weeks or so (and i mean eat what i fancy lol) but only when i lose a bit more weight, just doing the ketosis stage all over again worries me so let me kno how it goes plz!

gl to you Boo wish you all the best, it's a hard slog but worth it at the end.

I tried the chocolate bar this week and never really liked it, do you know if the nutty one is similar ?

NEVER give up we can do this!!! think bout how good we will feel in 4 months frm now wooop!!! can't wait =D x
posted 14-Jan-2011 4:04am

hi Bubbles, am right back into it and no side effects for ketosis as yet...

i love the malt toffee and the mint chocolate bars. I found the nutty one was like eating cardboard - not that i've ever tried but its how i would imagine it to taste lol... Once you get in to the swing of it, you really don't miss food, this is my second turn on CD. I went on it last April and lost 5st in 5 months. I then took a break for a few months and did really well maintaining but put some back on over xmas, hence why i am back on it again but i have decided that i would like to loose a few more stone. I am finding it much easier this time although i still get the hunger pains in my tummy which really hurt but its mind over matter and i am blessed that i have the most amazing counsellor who is always happy to assist me in any way that she can. For example i usually just have the bars, i don't really have soups or porridge, if i had to have them i think i would not last on it, even though you are not supposed to but last time i lost usually 4ilb a week on the bars...

Anyway enough of my ranting, hope you have a good weekend and resist all temptation

I started this diet 2 weeks ago and fell off the wagon this week. I lost 9lbs in my first week but lost nothing this week as I had eaten proper food. I was devastated but it has made me want to be more disciplined again. It means I have to go through the first 4 days again and I'm on day 2 and am starving! My tummy growls all day, which is not pleasant. I'm really glad I found this blog, as reading all your comments has motivated me to keep going! My next weigh in is next Wednesday so will keep you posted. Good luck all!

Started the Cambridge 22 Nov 2010 and never thought I could do it. I felt so strongly that my teeth were made for chewing and not to be used as a strainer! The 2nd night I had a nightmare where I was chased by spaghetti... Its now exactly 2 months later and I have lost the 2 stones which I wanted but never felt I had the willpower. I suffered insomnia and constipation but not bloated just poor bowel movement. Sometimes I needed to eat something more substantial. On average I lost 3 lbs per week and was delighted to have reached the 12.4 stones. My biggest incentive is to lose the weight to visit Barbados on 8 Feb to celebrate my 60th birthday. I have never felt so happy with my success. I have more energy, can walk fater without losing breath so the benefits are great. I may gain 7 lbs in Barbados but on return to UK i shall start again for the summer because I would have only1 and half stone. Good luck to all of you and if I can so can you----believe me . try to find a good reason why you need to lose it and let that be your incentive.

Hi I have already lose 3 stone calorie counting in 6 months was 14 stone 2 dieting to 11 stone.2 and then I platuaed. Decided to start the cambridge and lost 5 pounds in the first week quite a small loss compared to others and havent broke the diet at all. I guessing this is because I am only two stone off my goal weight so the weight loss must slow down. I have done this diet before a few years ago and I lost a stone in the first week but was a lot bigger. Any one else found this? To break the platua was fantastic thou so pleased about that wondering how ong it would take to lose this two stone as I am getting married on april the 2ndxx

Hi Guys,

Its really nice to find a place for support. Your are all clearly doing well. I'm on day 7 of CD and so far I have lost 9lbs. I am continuing until May 30th I have a goal of 2 stone to lose in total. Also I know loads of ppl who have have been successful on this diet. Also for those of you feeling weak and considering giving up one thing to remember FOOD ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE... If you are craving anything in particular i.e. sweets, chips, etc just think they will be there when your diet is finished.. But by then you'll probably be so skinny you won't want them lol!

I would not drink as much as 4 litres though i think that's to much Emma try a max of 3 litres. anyway keep posting its nice to know your not alone.

Hello M Bee. I have my weigh in today so i am going to speak to my counciler about it all! As i am ever so bloated this morning, could this be to too much water? I cant stop drinking it. I have forever got a bottle of water in my hand. I love it LOL. Ive always liked water but i have never drank as much as i do now. Can drinking too much water stop me from losing weight ?? Arghhh.... i cant win. If i dont drink it then i get a very dry mouth :( I am smoking a hell of a lot more too so that prob does not help my dry mouth. :@

HI Emma, well done to your 9 pounds that's great, I got weighed on Saturday and only lost 3lbs I was gutted, but am looking on the bright side and thinking of it as 1lb away from a stone, im going away for this weekend so wont get weighed until the following weekend, am hoping the loss will be extremely impressive by then, I am up and down with my water but find I can drink loads of tap water over mineral water. I was told that too much water can be awful for you so I dont tend to go as far as 4 litres, I find that the max I can do in a day is 3 litres. do a google search on effects of too much water, that will clear things up for you. Well I'm off for now, keep me posted and well done to you again!!!

Hi Guys

Im on Day 12 and have found it really hard today. My first week I lost 10lbs so hopefully Ive lost 4 more by the time of my 2nd weigh in on Wednesday morning.

With regards to water ive just been drinking the 2.25 ltrs but have had to have sugar free gum to get me through this week as my mouth tastes horrible!!!

We must keep the motivation going and keep in the backs of our minds that this is short term. My counsellor has recommended joining WW or Slimming World when you have lost your weight as they are great for maintenance.

Keep it up guys!!

Day 5 for me (can't believe I've made it this far). First time doing anything like this. I want to lose 4s, my CDC says 5.5 but I can't imagine being under 10st and it feels weird to me.

Anyway I have almost given up a few times. Days 2-3 were HARD.

Days 4-5 so far been great in terms of much less hunger, more energy, and a feeling of strength knowing I can resist temptation. I had a little bit of chicken breast on Day 3 but refuse to feel guilty and my CDC said it's ok, it's a cheat but it's a safe cheat.

It's the weekend tomorrow which will be hard. (Work is so much easier than home). I have bought eggs just in case I am about to slip. Better eggs or chicken or cheese than bread. I'm trying really hard to not think too far into the future weeks as it is daunting imagining parties and social events and bored or down moments and I just hope when they come I do safe cheats and get right back on it.

I crave stories of successful long-term maintenance and please point me to any source you know of.

First WI on Monday which feels like AGES. Am hoping for 6-7lb so if it is more I'll be thrilled and if less a little sad but it's the clothes getting looser that really motivates me.

Great place to post easily. Thanks for listening!

Wow, what a great website, and what wodfernul videos! You certainly are an inspiration! I also found your site through, and will definitely subscribe. While I have been vegan for years, I am always looking for new and clever ideas to help friends and family think about what they are eating. While none are vegan (yet . . .) I definitely have them all eating healthier. Future ideas if you don't grow any of your own veggies, please give it a try! Or inspire others to plant some. A container with one tomato plant is a great start. I am in South Florida, so I tend to have a garden year round. There are several months of the year I don't have to buy any salad goodies, I just have to go pick them. Talk about saving money on your food bill. Anyway, thanks again for taking time to make a difference. Oh and I love your eco sneaks from a couple episodes back!
