Summary
A diet created by Dr. Benjamin Feingold the eliminates salicylates, artificial colors, and artificial flavors from food to prevent hyperactivity.
Description
The idea is that certain artificial chemicals in food we eat or over-the-counter drugs we take may be causing some of our modern health problems.
Many parent with children who have ADHD believe this diet has helped their child. Some believe it also helps against asthma, eye-muscle disorders, sleep disorders, bed-wetting, ear infections, seizures, and stomach aches, among other problems.
Success with this diet requires that one takes absolutely none of the forbidden substances.
Additionally, mouthwash, toothpaste, cough drops, perfume, and other other-the-counter non-food products should be avoided.
History
Dr. Benjamin Feingold (1900-1982) was a pediatric allergist. He work as a doctor, helping children in both the United States and Europe. From studying allergies in children, his theory about the causes of hyperactivity was developed.
Criticism
Studies have shown that very few (2% or less) children respond adversely to these additives. Though, the supporters of the Feingold Diet continue to espouse it's effectiveness and maker greater claims about its efficacy, little scientific proof exists that this is the case.
