Grapefruit Diet

Summary

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

Description

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

History

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Criticism

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

ooh, so sorry to hear that! I'm going to try this out for the next few days again in hopes of the bacon thing not being bothersome, and sseing some results again. If not, I'm probably going to head on over to Atkins :) Good luck with the Atkins, if you go that route!

I just started this grapefruit diet on monday at 177 (5,2 30 years) and it is now thursday and i am at 180?? i'm scared if i keep going i will keep gaining. i followed all of the directions to the grapefruit juice diet and mine says that you can eat unlimited meat and full fat salad dressing which i have. i keep track of my calories anyway and they have been anywhere from 1700-2000 a day. i am drinking a ton of water. is this just temporary or am i doing something wrong?? i dont want to get fatter

Hey, I did this diet about a month or 2 ago and wrote my progress on here (which you can read about if you go back a few pages on this blog) but I got off track pretty bad. I did however lost 10 pounds. The first 6 in the first 14 days then4 more pounds the second phase, but got messed up with family members taking me out to eat and eating candy and sweets with my 1 year old daughter. Im starting back today because my b-day is next month and I want to atleast loose 20 pounds. The diet can work if you stick to it and drink LOTS of water. Take care everyone!!

I have read most of the comments on this page. It appears to me as if the diet it great in the beginning with the immediate loss of the water weight. My father was on the Atkins diet years ago and this is practically identicle minus the grapefruit. I know from what he went through that this is very tough on the body. I thought I had found gold with this becuase I am trying to count calories and not lose muscle but get lean. With all the protein I should be able to maintain my muscle and lose the fat. I hope that this works as it is my first day and I LOVE grapefruit. I love reading everyone's progress posts as it is extremely supportive.

Hey guys, just to update for those starters. I'm on Day 3. Day 1 was absolutely greuling. I was very hungry and missing my carbs. Day 2 I upped my protein and I was not so hungry. Here I am, Day 3. I have already lost 1.5lbs and am not facing hunger as before. Just eat more and more protein, but make sure to put it to good use and work out a bit. That will help to make you lean and trim. I would suggest eating more vegetables but they have no fill to them. I could eat 10lbs of veggies and still be hungry because they metabolize so quickly. Good luck to everyone!

Hello Everyone! I am starting the grapefruit diet for the first time tomorrow and I have been doing a lot of googling on it. =) I noticed that some sites have calorie restrictions and some do not, however, they all tell you to eat until you are full and that you can double meat and veggie portions. How do you maintain 800 calories or less and eat until you are full at every meal!? Are there recommended proportions of salad/veggies and meat? Please help me out if you can! Thanks!

Congratz to everyone with positive results! I'm so excited to have found a diet that works and I can eat bacon every day!! (^_^)

Hey. I've been doin the diet for about 10 days now. Sometimes I dnt have time for the breakfast so I simplt combine the bacon n the salad at lunch and eat 2boiled egg whites and a WHOLE grapefruit instead of half..and then eat dinner as instructed. Is that okay to do? I would imagine so. One question I have though: is there ANY way I substitute these eggs for something? I'm just really tired of the eggs!lol. I like eggs like in omlets mostly..I'm just REALLY over the eggs..help me someone. Lol

posted 14-Jun-2010 11:53am

Hi guys :) yes dani tea/coffee can be taken out. I've never drank it.
William, i rarely actually eat at breakfast and just have my 8oz of grapefruit juice instead, I wouldn't eat so much/add so much into lunch because it's breakfast that can help kick start the matabolism for the day, and if you haven't had it or drank the juice then lunch may not be matabolised as quickley as expected. But no sorry, no substitutions for the eggs, i've tried scrambled, boiled, poached, fried, and i even stopped eating them and just having bacon on its own for a while.
Day 4 of my second attempt. Going well so far. Keep up the good work :)

posted 16-Jun-2010 3:48am

I figured there could be no egg substitutions.lol. :(...as far as lunch, really the only thing I'm really adding xtra is eating the whole grafruit instead of half...I LOVE salads anyway, always have..and in any normal salad I will usually have eggs and bacon in them anyway..so I just take my 2pieces of bacon and about 1 and a half boiled egg whites and crumble it up in my salad..idk, that works for me..I look at a salad as a meal..so its kind of like ust having a salad for breakfast..and I dnt cheat or snack at all between my breakfast/lucnch and dinner..I usually have about a gallon of water between my breakfast/lunch combo and dinner and a gallon after dinner. It keeps me going to the restroom, lol, but hell, I'm on a MISSION! Lmao

Well yea, now you've put it like that it sounds ok. Try getting grapefruit juice and drinking the 8oz of that on the morning then only having half of a grapefruit for dinner :) But yea, i drink lots of water and love my salads too. Its nice being able to add small amounts of butter to my veg on a night too :)
Goodluck with your mission William :D and keep us posted on how your doing.

Thanx! Ill definitely be back to keep you informed..and good luck everyone! On another note, I can't seem to get my hands on some pure, NOT from concentrate grapefruit juice. Having the hardest time in grocery stores locating it, even canned. How would a juice, let's say like Everfresh that's 100% but it FROM concentrate, serve as a substitute for the 1/2 of grapefruit? I didn't think that would even be suitable. What do u guys think?

I live in Michigan..and I've been to many stores, but to no avail. So just drinking regular 100% grapefruit juice is just fine?..even if it IS from concentrate? If it is, imma stock up on the juice to have for the next 2 weeks. Just started my two day break today..and I'm about to have doritos for breakfast.lol not to worry, this is my only fatty indulgence. Gonna still watch my carbs while I'm on break.

I'm back. The diet worked really well for me for the short time I managed to stay on it. We had company come visit for a long stay and that got me off track. Anyway, after several weeks of eating too much, I've decided to try again. I didn't gain it all back yet, so that's good! I know it says you don't need to count calories on this diet, but I like to just to make sure that I'm eating at least 1200 a day. I've found that if I go below that, my body goes into starvation mode and won't let go of any weight. Then if you start eating more calories again after doing that, your body is going to hold on to every calorie it can . . . anyway, not sure if others have fallen into that cycle, but that's why I make sure to count. So here we go! Good luck to everyone. Love hearing the updates.

I used the GFD years ago and lost weight quickly, hopefully I can this time too. I'll check in here daily to be inspired by you all. Keep up the great work :)

kerbear,

FRESH Grapefruit produce is best, organic is even better, way better than the juice and will aide your weight loss better too.

1/2 a grapefruit per meal, I whizz mine up and add purified water to it. I also drink 2 litres a day of green tea, no coffee.

If it's on the plan you must have it. What is NOT on the plan cannot be eaten or drunk. You must follow the GFD exactly for it to work 100% successfully. If you're allergic to eggs ask your doctor what = eggs that you can have. Best to be safe

I feel guilty about how much meat I'm eating....6 slices of pork loin roast....too much? I've never been a big meat eater but now I'm starting to enjoy it (since I'm hungry and it's what I get to eat! lol).

Also, I've been feeling very sleepy...so my coffee intake has been on average two cups a day, is this a no-no?

Also, is it ok to have Ranch dressing? Do I need to eat the grapefruit immediately after my meal or can I wait an hour or two? (sometimes I'm too full and don't want to eat it).

Just a quick chime in here :) I started this diet back in March and lost 8lbs in a week and a half. I couldn't handle the smell of bacon anymore or the cost of grapefruit juice for each meal (not to mention not having it on hand when I was out and about eating on the go). It's a great diet, and I know the results are quick and easy if you're persistent, but I have to say that Atkins is much easier. I have been on the diet for 3 days and I've lost 5 pounds already! You have a larger variety of what you can eat, there's no grapefruit juice, and you don't HAVE to have salad for lunch and dinner. Not only that, but there are different phases within the diet, so it's not like you'll have to have grapefruit and salads the rest of your life to maintain your weight loss. Yes, you will have to continue to eat healthy, but each phase introduces more flexibility into your diet. I've had avocado, string cheese, sugar free jello, chorizo, salsa, sour cream, and the list goes on :)

Just my two cents of a bit more to have in your diet than what's here on the grapefruit diet. I wish you all the best!

Its day 2 and I feel great! Although I was light-headed and a little dizzy.i feel emotionally good and Im very positive about my results. I need this more than anything. I thought about what ppl said about the boredom of eating the same thing everyday. But come on GFD's if we are HONEST w/ ourselves we have eaten the same crappy fatty highly saturated foods EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!!! That lifestyle for the most part is what got us here today. So why not do something to better your life for the rest of your life??????? Its just a short interruption, a small investment in your life for a lifetime of healthy living and eating. i believe we have everything IN us to MAKE it happen for us!!!!!!! So let's stay positive!!!!!!! (Note: Now next week i may hit a low spot...Im counting on you to bail me out)!!!!!!!!!!!lololololol

I am allergic to eggs and absolutely can not eat them, nor fake eggs, or whites only, or yolks only. If we have to follow the diet exactly, what do I use in place of the eggs in the morning? My other question, how long? I understand you take a 2 day break but do you just keep taking the 2 day breaks until you have lost the desired amount?

I just have a couple of questions: Can I use splenda on my grapefruit? Is it ok to use fat free dressing or do I need to use regular salad dressing? What can I eat on the 2 off days? (Obviously I shouldn't binge but do I still need to follow the low carb eating plan?)

I notice how hard it is to walk anymore so I made a comment to myself to loose it. Having a support team to talk to really helps. Trying to get my friend on the diet so we can talk but she always has an excuse so I have given up on her.

I'm nervous about the 2 off days. I'm excited to eat what I've been missing out on but I don't want to gain all of the weight back. For those of you who have done this diet before did you gain weight back on the 2 off days? If so how much? I know it probably depends on what you eat but im just curious

Im just gonna have to want to succeed more than i want to be social. I need to lose a good 50! im 200 pounds. As much as i would love to be 125, i have to be realistic and set short goals. I am goin to keep this blog in my favorities. I think its inspiring!!! I will be starting this monday smile

Hi Anonymous,
Not sure if this will help but I could not wait until my 1st 2-day break. In fact, I thought of everything I would eat & counted every minute until Saturday. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't that hungry on the break & my favorite (coke-a-cola) tasted completely different. However, it was really nice to eat bread, potatoes & a little ice cream. I think the reason we only get 2-days is because we can not do that much damage in such a short time. Just pace yourself & see how you feel on the break. If you want or crave something go ahead & eat it but don't pig-out. I'm no expert, its just my opinion (remember I'm a 1st time dieter). Everyone is different so take a quick look @ all the comments above & you be the judge (blog is a great resource). Congrats on making it to another break & keep up the good work :)

Hi,

This forum has been great! I love reading about everyone's successes. I've lost 9 lbs so far! Does anyone follow the diet for 6 days and 1 off day instead of the 12 and 2? if i did that do you think it will ruin the results?

Welcome Shannon! @ the very top of this site is a copy of the diet plan. @ any meal you may eat until you are full but do not eliminate anything. For example, if you want 3 eggs @ breakfast eat them but do not eat only 1 egg or skip the eggs all together. In addition, you may eat dill or bread & butter pickles. I hope this info helps you but please review everything for yourself before you start. I'm not an expert just a 1st time dieter lending a helping hand. Good Luck :)

Before I forget and go to sleep. Do I have to drink the tea or coffee? Cause I Dont drink either. Can I add lemon to my water?
Henry

Hi Shannon, I hate coffee so I drink cold tea, crystal light or diet soda instead of coffee. Not sure about the lemon but I use it in my tea & water (adds a little flavor):)

I'm not like the others, my weight loss has been slow (& thats ok for me).I would be losing more but I don't exercise:( I must admit that I have not cheated.....YET!Everyday is different so you may hit some bumps in the road but don't give up you can do it!!!!!! If you have a set back don't beat yourself up just start all over. I try to remind myself of what I want to accomplish. I started @ about 222pds. & would like to be around 195 pds. Hi Shannon, sorry you had a rough night. I don't have headaches but several have commented on this annoying side effect. Not sure why (everyone's differnt)? Maybe its your body's way of adjusting to the new diet? I did read however that they will subside. So hang in there you're not alone :)

Hey Guys!
I just finished day 1 and I found it really hard. I really craved sugar and carbs, I think it was so hard because I had to cut back on caffeine diet cokes, coffee, etc. That was always my go-to appetite suppressant. I am looking to lose about 20 lbs. That's how much I weighed about a year and a half ago, and I know I looked pretty good then. I'm not sure what happened but I woke up this winter and realized I had grown 2 sizes! I'm at a 10 now and want to get back to a 6. I have been working out hard since March and have not seen results beyond a fluctuating 5 lbs up and down. I know I'm getting in better shape, but I would like the visible results too. As for the drinking beforehand, I think from what I've gathered it is best to do it 10 min before your meal, if you have the time.

Just an update on me and Amanda, We just weight ourselves and we are slowly but surely making progress. This is the start of the fifth day! I was down to 285 lbs from my starting 290 lbs. She was down to 242 lbs from the starting 244 lbs. (We made a mistake and put 242 lbs as her starting weight but it was 244 lbs). we will keep you guys updated! Thanks for the support.

Good Job David&Amanda, and thank you Henry!
I am on day 2 and I am already getting sick of the eggs and salad. I definitely need to get more creative and do some tastier salads, and I was making HB eggs my protien for lunch because it's just easy to transport. Definitely going to start changing it up though...4 eggs in a day is just too much :(
Last night the only cheat I did was licking the knife after making my daughter a PB&J. I did not weigh myself at the beginning of this...I don't even own a scale, but I did take all of my measurements and plan to monitor those.

Thanks Sandieth! We went to the local wal mart and picked a digital one up for just $17.88. The brand name is "Health-o-Meter". It is black in color if that helps. Good luck on your journey to better health!

Dear Sandieth, David & Amanda: Congrats on sticking to the diet. I can't tell you how much I despise EGGS & BACON! If there was anything else we could eat @ breakfast. I dread waking up in the morning because I know how the day will start :( I've tried to jazz it up w/cheese, red onions, little red pepper...ANYTHING just to get through breakfast. All in all I've lost 10lbs in about a month. My weight loss has been slow but I don't exercise. Besides...everyone is different & I love being 10lbs lighter :) So hang in there your OFF-DAYS are just around the corner!

@David&Amanda, Thanks so much for the advice on the scale. I have to say that reading through this forum I think it's great that we are all on it right now, because it looks like it goes through "dry spells" from time to time, so I'm grateful you and @Henry are actively participating right now. This is REALLY hard. I NEVER diet, just mainly watch what I eat, but I need to do something to cut some fat while I'm working out. I haven't worked out on this diet yet because I have had low energy at work and home, but I thought once I got through the first 3 days I would be more "used" to the lack of carbs and sugar and be able to incorporate exercise back into my life. I normally work out about 4 days a week.
@Henry, I don't consider 10 lbs in a month SLOW weightloss!! I think that sounds like it is permanent weight.

So I just changed from my work clothes into shorts and a shirt and I have to say my belly looks like it's already flattening out.

The only area I struggle with is the caffiene. I had 3 cups of black coffee today, folded and had a diet coke, and am now drinking some iced tea (home brewed, unsweetened). I am just so tired on this diet, and I know the caffeine is BAD, but ugh.

I SWEAR I am eating a LOT of protein and veggies, I'm not starving myself, but I'm so hungry and tired and only satisfied for a few min after I'm done w/ my meal...then everything in sight starts to look good ;)
