Grapefruit Diet

Summary

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

Description

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

History

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Criticism

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

Ok so I finally weighed myself and I have lost 7lbs but I don't know how much I weighed before because I'm just going off my last weight in November. It works. I don't encourage cheating but I did have some oatmeal a couple times while on diet and so still losing. I have a free weekend coming up but I really don't want to get to crazy. Loving the results need to get back to my zumba and gym cardio work outs.

Hello,

I have done this diet in the past and had great success. I got it from an old neighbor that had to go on it in order to lose weight fast for heart surgery. It's been 10 years since the last time I was on it, and I definately think it's time to go back on. I weigh 180 now, hopefully I will have the same success I did when I was younger.

I think I'm a bit late with my comment, but hopefully some of you will see!

I am on my third day of the grapefruit diet and really struggling with how hungry I always am ... Does anybody have any tips? I've stuck to it EXACTLY though, so I'm proud of that! One more question ... Do I need to drink the coffee or tea everyday? because I don't drink either of those normally so I don't really see the point.

I didn't weigh myself the day before or anything, but the last time I weighed myself I was exactly 220 pounds (and I'm pretty sure it stayed the same) ... I REALLY hope I see results at the end of these 12 days, because if I don't, I'm sure I won't stick with this diet!

Hello,

I started this diet Monday. I have done this diet about 10 years ago and had great success, but I gained about half the weight back. My doctor put me on a no carb diet, very similar to this diet. Only intaking about 800 calories per day. I was diagnosed being Insulin resistant, hence why my doctor put me on a diet. I figured I would just give this diet another go. Hopefully it will help get my system back on track. I will be weighing in Monday and keep you all posted on my journey.

i started this diet on monday. would anyone know if eating steak is ok? i had steak and veggies for dinner and feel kind of guilty.
also, would anyone know if eating the regular bacon is better then eating turkey bacon? Im under the impression its the combination of the fat in bacon and eggs that start the weight loss process.

cookietimegal - i drink green tea in-between meals..are you seeing any sucess doing that? and congrats on the weight loss. i havent weighed in yet.i'l update weight loss on monday.

Please let me know if im wrong.

Im eating gf and drinking the juice and eating low carb to no carb foods and all the meat I want. I loved reading all the posts, it helps to motivate me to keep it up. I dont know how much I have lost all ready, but its enough that people notice! Im very tall and very overweight, so to see these kind of results helps me to keep going!

Hello everyone! I have been having issues with yhis diet and have been searchibg the web for weeks to see if I can get some answers until I came upon this wrbsite.
I actually lost 70lbs on this diet about 11 years ago. And I gained back maybe 10- 20lbs since then. Well, but this diet was a lifesaver for me and I have turned to it again now... After my second chiild.

Well so my problem is this: it doesn't work! When I was on it last time, I really lost 5 lbs the fifth day and then lost 1.5 lbs every other day. But this time, I lost lityle bits of weight from day one till day 3 then I stopped. I am really strict about the diet... So I don't understand why it's not working. The only thing different is I'm eating turkey bacon and garlic for seasoning. I also don't remember whether I ised Olive oil last time but I use it now for everything.

Any veterans out there who know what I'm talking about??? And more importantly, do you know how to get me out of this rut? I'm so disheartened. I'm still on it. I'm on day ten but for the past 5 days I lost 0 pounds. Please let me know if you have any info... Thank you!

(@ curious dieter)I'm so sorry this diet isn't working for you. I tried it last year started @ 220 ended @ 200. However, I started it again after the new year (had thyroid surgery). Weighed 230 & now I'm 215. The weight has not melted away like others but I'm still hanging in there. Try not to compare yourself to others (I know thats easier said than done). It may take a little longer but you will lose the weight.I believe in you so give it one last try (please). Don't look @ the scale but see if you can fit into theose skinny jeans hiding in your closet :) @ 39 years old I have struggled w/weight for a long time. Find what works for you & remember we are always here for support. Take care my friend :)
