Grapefruit Diet

Summary

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

Description

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

History

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Criticism

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

i had started the diet on 10/8/08 and was off of it on the 9th day. reason? i had a party to go to and of course i could not say no the food and the cake. i so regret it but anyways, i can't go back. i am going to say though, i did lose 6 lbs. i went down to 159 lbs. it does work and any of you who is still on it, don't give up. something i am going to say that i did notice was that i had tonz of energy and my skin started clearing up. i don't have acne or anything like that but i do get pimples once in a while and they leave marks without me doing anything to them. anyways, the grapefruit will start detoxifying your body once you start on it. it really works. i started another diet, i have not gained the weight back though but i just decided to go on a low carb diet w/out the grapefruit, later on i want to add it to help detox. and for Shavonna, yes, the grapefruit does make you go both ways, #1 and #2, but that is the goog thing, it means it is working on your bod. Good Luck!!!!!

I have tried this diet a while ago and lost 40 lbs in 2 months. It really does work. I was not a big fan of the snacks, so I didn't have them and still lost the weight. I am a sweet tooth girl and so to cheat a little, I would add a table spoon of raisins in my salad, just to calm the cravings. Not all of the time mind you. I have managed to keep the weight off because I didn't go back to my old habits and am ready to lose 40 more. Oh, another thing I did was substitute the eggs for egg whites or egg beaters, because we do need to watch our cholesterol especially with the bacon. Believe me, doing this diet is a mindset. You have to be mentally ready to do it. I am starting on 11/12 and will keep you posted. Good luck to everyone else who is a bout to start!!

No carrots and no cauliflower. Carrots have a high glycemic index and defeats the purpose. I'm not sure of the index for the cauliglower, I just know that it's not allowed.

i did get down to 10 stone before, i started this diet on jan 15th 08 by the time i went on hoilday and was a bridesmaid in may-june i was 10 stone 5 months on im here all over again...ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh phrewwwwwww..
it did work before so i hope it wil work again ..i found eatting the same foods day in day out hard after a while and to be truthfull roasted peppers with herbs an garlic with red onions makes me feel sick just typing it lol..
but ive got to shake myself, like with every diet you have to be positive!!and belive in it its going to be hard its going to be days u wanna reach for the toast and jam but!! why are we doing this because were un happy and down with how we are and what we weigh and were not going to change unless we want to.....
Bread is my downfull, and i used to need to buy bread for kids pack ups ,,sooo it was always in the house but i stopped buying it and brought wrapps and made cheesy scones, only enough for that day and none left laying about..that helped can eat whats not there ahy lol..

O.k so, I didn't start when I said I would because I was unprepared. I had not gone shopping for the necessary items that I would need for the week, but now I have and yesterday was my first day.
Like herewegoagain, I found eating the same foods day after day boring, but it's a mind set and we have to get around it. Try some of these no/low carb tricks for a change of pace without cheating on the diet.

Lettuce and tuna wraps.
Cucumber salad - Sliced cucumbers and italian dressing, let it marinate for 30 minutes and this stuff is great.
Cucumber bites- Thick sliced cucumber(used like a cracker) topped with tuna, cheese, sour cream, chicken salad, sardine mix etc.
Egg Muffin- I mix Egg Beaters with crumbled bacon , red onion and green pepper in a bowl. Then pour the mixture into my muffin tin. Bake for 20-30 or so minutes on 350 and Wala, you have quick and easy breakfast muffins that you can eat when you are in a hurry or just don't feel like cooking breakfast.

Have a sweet tooth? Try egg white crepes.
Coat your fry pain with your choice of butter, margarine, olive oil etc.
let it get hot and pour in just enough egg beaters to coat the pan. Flip and let is cook on the other side.Take it out and fill it with Reddi whip( no carbs) and sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon.

I'll weigh in next week.

I want to lose weight really bad, and I know my mom tried this deit and failed after losing 12lb in 2 weeks she gave up. Today is 12/19/08 I plan to start this diet for the new year. If I used Grapefruit with my husbands juicer is Carrots, Apples out of the plan or will it help him? I want to start by adding grapefruit to his deit and slowly ween him (and I) off the carbs. Would just adding Grapefruit to your meals help lose weight or would it be a waste of time?

I tried another twist on this diet and lost 150 pounds! This is what i did:

THE HEALTHY BALANCED GRAPEFRUIT DIET

BREAKFAST:
1/2 a grapefruit, no sugar
1 carnation instant breakfast shake made with skim milk, instead of whole milk

SNACK
1 flavoured rice cake

LUNCH:
1/2 a grapefruit, no sugar
1 carnation instant breakfast shake made with skim milk, instead of whole milk

SNACK:
1 flavoured rice cake

DINNER:
1/2 grapefruit, no sugar
1 serving of meat or protien
1 salad with dressing of your choice, or 1 serving of vegetables

SNACK:
1 flavoured rice cake

Make sure you drink 8-10 glasses of water, tea, or coffee a day, but do not waterload, cause it is dangerous!

This diet is balanced, the shakes make it so you get your protien and vitamins and have enough energy to get through the day ephedra free, without overloading on caffine. Although I was using ephedra too when I did this diet. You get your grains from the rice cakes, but they have no fat. Make sure that at dinner, you eat your veggies and meat (or protien) this is very important cause you cannot survive on only artifical vitamins and protien. I did this diet for 5 months and lost 150 pounds in 3 months with ephedra. Then I quit the ephedra and kept the weight off by continuing to eat like this. Unfortunately, 2 pregnancies later, I am struggling to lose the weight i gained, yet again.

Hi everyone! I started this diet on 1/08/09 and I lost 6 lbs the first week. I'm about 60 pounds overweight right now and I'm really depressed. I have to tell you that it was nice to see the scale go down that much after just 7 days. I'm going to weigh myself only once a week and I'm doing an hour of cardio everyday. I'll add yoga and weights in another week. I think the key to success with this diet is to stick to it exactly the way it's written. I see alot of people asking if you can substitute things and I would say no. Just stick to it, no changes, and eat the other stuff you want on the 2 days off. Also everyone should do some kind of cardio so try to do at least 30 min a day. Not just for weight loss but also because it's good for you! :) Good luck everone!

I dont do alot of exercising, however I do get on my treadmill at least 30 min a day 3x's a week. My biggest obstacle is the water. I barely get 3 cups in a day. i feel this is what is hindering my weight loss, don't know for sure, but aiming to drink more. Charmjohn, I think it would be a good idea to get your starting weight that way you can track your progress.

I am somewhat disappointed with how this is going for me. My biggest weight loss came in the first 3 days, 2.1 lbs. At the end of 7 days 3 lbs. Day 10 I had gained and was back at my initial 2.1 lbs weight loss. Day 12, same thing, so in 12 days I only lost 2.1 lbs. I kind of went overboard on my 2 days off, and on day 14, I weighed 160.8. I didn't start over on Monday, which was 1/19/09, however I believe in this diet so I am going to start over on 1/26/09. My friend started a week after I did and has already lost 10 lbs in 10 days. The only thing I did different was sometimes I would add cheese to my scrambled eggs in the morning, and some times for lunch I did not have the full eight ounces of grapefruit juice because I bought the little cans for convenience and they were only 5.5 ounces. Does anybody else add cheese to their eggs in the morning. I also dont have regular bowel movements and wondered if this played a part. Has anyone else's weight fluctuated like mine and if so what did you do differently.

posted 21-Jan-2009 6:00pm

Hi bmi>30 sorry to hear you're disappointed. :( Maybe the problem is on the 2 days off you went "overboard". Maybe you were retaining alot of water, A drastic change in your eating when dieting can do that. My friend is a body builder and she gained 15 lbs in one day from pigging out after eating her strict 12 wk contest diet. It was all water of course, but she was really bloated! So on the two days off I eat the same foods as the grapfruit diet I just add a treat or two like an extra latte, some cheese on my salad, or some almonds as a snack. I try to stay away from starchy carbs and sugars because I know I will retain water, I've always had a problem with that. That's also why I only weigh myself once a week. Have you tried smooth move tea or drinking more water? The tea works really fast and is available at most supplement stores, but I must warn you only drink it when you have access to rest room!

Tomorrow is my weigh in day can't wait to see what happens!

Thanks kriislessinseattle, I hadnt thought about that, it probably was water. I think I am going to omit the cheese in my salads. I didnt think it would hurt, but now I am not so sure. Those of you who have had and are having success with this diet, what do you put in your salads. In addition to the cheese, I was putting ham or turkey or imitation crab in my salad, does anyone else add meat to their salads or keep it strictly veggies. What about breaded meat/fish, I had McDonald's chicken nuggets a couple of times. Thanks for all your feedback!!!!!!!!

I did this diet back in 2001 and I lost 40 pounds by being on the diet on and off for the about 9 months. Here it is 2009 and I gained all the weight back by playing around. Anyway, I just started the diet on 1/5/09 in a weight loss challenge at work and i weighed in at 191.8. We weigh in once a week, my second week I lost 4.6 pound weighing at 187.2, then this week on 1/20/09 I was at 184.4 for a total of 7.4lbs in 2 weeks. I am so pumped and excited... yay... I am going to try to go the 10 weeks to see what happens. I dont remember losing weight this fast last time but i wasnt weighing myself either. I just stayed focus on a certain look that I was going for. Yay Me!!! To BMI>30- I put shredded cheese on my salads, I cant help it I feel like if I deprive myself from everything then i may go crazy and say eff it. I normally put red onions, cheese, a few grape tomatoes, and cucumbers sometimes in my salads. I'm happy and full. I prepare my own food and my own meats. I would NEVER eat McDonald's chicken nuggets on this diet. The best thing is to bake your own chicken, fish or whatever else it is. Stay away from fast food restaurants PLEASE. I use marinades on my meat or just seasoning. Nuggets have alot of salt and you dont want that. Stay focused on the diet though.

Its the easiest diet I've tried so far and I know it will work for me like it has with others. I believe that our metabolism plays a part in how fast we lose the weight. Slow metabolism, slow weight loss, however in comparison to other diets, the weight comes off quicker with this one. I have decided not to compare my weight loss with others because we all will lose weight differently based on our metabolism and other factors thats unique to us as individuals. I will do this until I reach my goal, and I encourage everyone on this forum to do the same. I will continue to post and pray for OUR success!

to kriislessinseattle, you are still doing good. the scales may say the same thing because you are building muscle. muscle weighs more than fat and sometimes people will think they are gaining weight when dieting because they weigh more, but in essence they are not gaining weight but building muscle. In addition to the diet, you are doing cardio and thats helping to build muscle tissue which is good. So in addition to losing weight you will have muscle tone and not be FLABBY. GOOD LUCK!!!

I am starting this diet tommarow. I have managed to lose 24 pounds since Thanksgiving but I need to lose at least 40 more pounds by the first of April. My question is, do you have to drink the milk or tomato juice? I'll check back in with my results. Good luck to all and God Bless.

I have horrible willpower, but this diet seems like i could actually stick to it. So, here i am sitting at the computer eating my eggs and bacon. i have discovered white grapefruit juice is a little on the bitter side. I used to drink the red jucie all the time, but couldn't find an unsweeted red juice. I am 31 y/o female with a 12 y/o daughter. I plan to post frequently as I am hoping that by posting it will be my form of support grorp. I am 5'5" and just weighed in at 181.5. For inspiration I have a pic of myself weighing about 160 on the fridge. I would love to see myself get down to 135lb, but for now 160lb would be a big blessing. At one point I was 200lb. I lost that weight by doing a low carb and low calorie diet. I cut myself down to 600 calories a day. The lowest I went down to was 176lb. so, I have only put on 4.5 in 2 years. I am sharing this because I have this deep need to share and offer support. Wish me luck as I wish you luck and have a great grapefruit day.

My parents did this diet a few years back and both lost weight on it. My husband and I are going to start the diet on Monday. I've always been skinny before I had kids. I even got back to my pre-baby size after my 1st baby but the second time around has been really tough. I've tried everything-even the new acai berry pills. NOTHING has worked! I'm 5'3 and a half and weigh 170 currently. I typically weigh 125. How long should it take me to reach my goal???

I've become really depressed!! I weighed in at 173 today. I was down to 160 after having my daughter and somehow the weight came back on. I don't eat junk food so whats the deal?? I'm desperate to back to my pre baby size of 125-that seems like its forever away! I've been struggling for 9 months to get the weight off. I need to know if this diet works??

This diet seems like it is very do-able and I plan to start it on 1/02/09. I had been on a raw food diet in the top part of '08 and I lost 60lbs! I mostly drank green smoothies and ate big salads composed of all kinds of greens. The smoothies consisted of a mixture of banana,apple,pear,1tbls honey,a little water&ice, and spinach all blended together in a good blender that "purees" really good. I had a health issue that had nothing to do with the diet but I ended up having to have an injection that contributed to me gaining from 177lbs to 222lbs in 4 months! Now that the health issue is over, I currently weigh 216lbs and I am 5'4. I am a large-framed woman who has had 2 kids and I am 41. My "realistic" goal weight is 150lbs. However, I would like to get to 140lbs. I am trying to get to my "realistic" goal weight in 6 months. I plan on drinking my green smoothies on my "off days" while following this Grapefruit Diet.I am going to post the results of my first weigh in on 1/09/09 and I am hoping to have lost at least 6lbs. Wish me luck fellow dieters!!!

I did the grapefruit diet a few years ago. I lost a total of 20 pounds in two weeks(i walked 5 miles a day). I went off the diet and went back to my old + some bad eating habits. I am now starting again soon. I wish everyone the best of luck on this diet or any other plan they choose.

HI, I'm back I weighed myself at the gym yesterday and I lost 6lbs in seven days and I also cheated on Sat night eating a fish filet meal at McDonald's because I had too many drinks on Sat night and I had to eat something but I still managed to lose 6lbs. Maybe it would have been 7 if I didn't eat that McDonald's but I'm really excited. I have this week to lose some more and I'm on my 2 days off this weekend. I'm really gonna stick to this diet because it works and watch what I eat so I will not gaint the weight back. Also I wanted to let everyone know that I also take fat burner pills before I exercise I just started taking them yesterday and the tea that's incorporated in the diet. I drink super dieter's tea by Laci LeBeau but it makes you use the bathroom alot but it cleanses your body. So good luck everyone I'll check back with my new weigh in on Friday 2/26/09.

I always have egg whites and a strip of bacon for breakfast, I have salad and some kind of meat a couple slices of peperoni, turkey breast, chicken, or sometimes a chicken ceasar salad, for dinner, alot of times i have salad again or i have green beans, brooccli and chicken, steak, or sausage, i think the key thing is i drink alot of water through out the day about 1 gal., it makes you feel full and i dont get hungry. i due not cheat at all on the diet, except a couple of times to have a couple of drinks, social lol. As far as the exercise not much just walked the dog for about 30 min every other night

This is probobly not a big deal but now i feel like i messed up my diet routine.... But then again the whole point is to eat grapefruit...

on this diet are bananas, pineapples, grapes, and yogurt(no-fat) allowed?
These things are VERY high in carbs but have tons of benefits.
I am a college student that defined the saying "freshmen 15". I have lost 10 lbs. on the Atkins but I need a boost and I am hoping that this works! I am 5'9 and am weighing in at 163 my goal weight is 135. if anyone has any dieting/ wellness questions I will be happy to answer. I am pre-med and have learned alot about food in my wellness coarses and I have amazing professors that I can get answers from... GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
