Summary


The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.


 

Description


The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice


The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.


History


It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.


Criticism


Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

Hi! I just started the gf diet 5 days ago. This is the 6th day and i lost 3lbs by following everything. Unfortunately today I cheated a little and had a sweet cream cheese pretzel. Will i quickly gain the weight back from the carbs?

smpp93,no you wont. Whenever I cheat, I add 15 or 30 minutes more to my daily cardio. I am now 6 pounds lighter and I feel amazing!This grapefruit diet really works! I have made this diet work for me. I just tried on my dress I couldn't fit! I fit it now!!!! woohooo!

Hi, this is not my first time doing the GFD, but it's been many years ago, but had big results. Just start today (7/09/12). So far so good, but I forgot to step on the scale. Can I step on a scale at lunch or should I wait? If so when should I step on it. I really like for my clothes size to do the job for me. Tell me what should I do?

Another question, if you workout faithfully every day, Jogg, and pretty much eat healthy. Can someone tell if the GFD will work if you start every Sunday, but off on Saturdays. Will it still work? Someone please respond back.

Hi AJ85, when the diet period is finish, that is on day 13 and 14, i eat almost the same as the diet way. Just no egg and bacon for breakfast, i will take sausage and fish instead. lunch i will have noodle 1/2 cup. dinner is meat and veg. I might just take 1 small piece of chocolate only........

During the diet, I follow tight but no result. I just re-start the diet 2 days ago and today is the 3rd day, didn't lose anything.........

by the way, can i eat mix beans in my salad?

This is day one for me and I can't weight to start losing weight.

Hello I tried this a long time ago and need something to get me going. I will work out, but my eating habits are out of control. Iam hoping to gain some sense of control having to follow a regimen.

Starting weight 297.2
Ultimate goal 160-175 lbs
mini goals every 12 lb increment.

I only want to try to lose 50 lbs using this, then wish to convert to healthier eating habits and routine exercise. Good luck to all!!!

I have tried so many different diets over the past few years, and probably every OTC diet pill known to man. The only thing I ever found that worked for me was when my Dr. prescribed me Phentermine. Now that I can't find a Dr. around that will prescribe that, I am excited to start this diet tomorrow. It seems pretty do-able since you can eat all the meat you like and use any dressing you like. Of course, I always think that with every diet I start and then find I have absolutely no willpower and that it's harder than it seems. But, I am seriously going to try to stick with this! I think if I see some immediate results, I will be more apt to stick with it! Not to mention I have a sexy, young man I'm interested in that motivates me! LOL Whatever works, right?? I am 42, 5 ft. 3 in., and I weigh 150 pnds. Before I had kids, I have always weighed anywhere from 105-120. So this is alot of extra weight for me. I will keep everyone posted on my progress, frustrations, questions, etc. Good luck to everyone else, too!

Goal Date: Aug. 20th

I'm starting with this and if I can reach that goal, I'd like to try to lose another 5 to 10 pounds after that. It's usually those last 10 or so pounds that are the hardest to shed.

I've been back at it for 5 days now. SW: 190.2 today's W/I was 184.8, so that's 5.4lbs in 5 days. I will take that. I will come back in the next 7 days and let you all know how it's going. I'm doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred as well.

I drop the original plan as it doesn't work for me anymore after 4 months try. My success is the 1st month, lost 15 lbs, then it is like yoyo, back and forth and back and forth.......no weight down. I follow exactly the diet and I do walk 30 min, 5 days per week but not working.....1 point, i even gain few more pounds but thank god, it goes down later........

Right now I still take grapefruit but not follow the diet......i will add as little carb back in as I found my skin is very dry, I lost a lot of hair and I read 1 news that too low carb can cause these problem......another post said if you remove carb, the weight that you lose will bounce back very fast.......so I decdided to try a modification and see what happen.

Down 7.2 lbs (183.0lbs now from 190.2) .. I started on July 29th. I've been doing the diet and working out. I can feel the change in the way my clothing fit and I am down almost 2 % body fat. I need to lose about 33 more lbs. I don't plan to use this diet for more than a couple months and then I will slow add stuff back in and calorie count

I started this diet on Monday and have lost 5lbs so far.
2 years ago I weighed 275 I went on a low carb diet more like the zone diet and lost about 70 lbs in a year. I didnt exersize. I kind of went off of it and was hovering at about 205 for the longest time. I tried the diet 2 weeks ago and got very frustrated not losing or yoyo ing up and down. I wasnt exercising. I started this diet on Monday and am at 199. my goal weight it 165. Ive also incoroprated 1/2 hour of aerobic...elyptical 5 days a week. I want to lose 34 more pounds by Christmas. I did this diet a long time ago and lost 40lbs in 2 months. I hate eating the same thing almost everyday. But ill hold on to 9 more days of this and see what happens.

Congrats to everyone. Tomorrow will be my day 1 on the diet. My starting weight is 280lbs and my goal weight is 160 - 170 lbs. So I have some ways to go to get to my goal. I do have a few questions to Kellia, bea or anyone. Do you snack in between meals or follow the plan strictly? Are there more success when you eat the grapefruit itself or does drinking the juice give you the same results? With the weight loss can you see and feel the actual lose in your clothes sizes or do you have to lose a large amount before you start seeing and feeling the difference?

DD, i don't have snack in between meal but sometimes, I cannot really stand for it, i will have a chicken breast or sausage........most of the time just drink water.......and I drink skim milk in 4 p.m. instead of before sleeping.......

I do see the clothes size different but overall looking not much different......maybe I don't lost too much.......unfortunately after 2 around of the diet, there is no more weight lost.......no matter how hard I try......no change.......so I stop now.......

Hi dd..no i dont snack at all. If you eat enough at your meal you should be ok. Im down another 6lbs and Im not done with round 1 yet. Friday is my last day. I started at 205 am at 194...my goal is 165. I have to attribute a lot of this to my exercise program. The elliptical machine every day for 1/2 hour it burns 500 calories.... Also Im trying to limit my fat intake. I dont eat red meat. I try to stick to chicken breasts and salads mostly. Although i eat the bacon and eggs every morning. And i put bacon in my salad. I also drown my salad in ranch dressing lol. I also eat out Mcdonalds bacon egg sandwich...without the bread. Chick fila salads. I did sneak some cheetos last night...like a hanful. LOL! But that was the first time. Honestly this diet is pretty much Atkins..except for the grapefruit. I read a bunch about that were they conducted testing on a bunch of people that didnt change their diet only added grapefruit before every meal and they lost a little under 4 lbs just by adding it. They believe it helps your insulin burn your fat. I have PCOS so I have to be real careful with carbs anyway and insulin. The first few days I hadnt lost anything and then on the 3rd day I list 5lbs. Its strange but it does work. Its not an easy diet. I went through carb withdrawal all of last week. Headaches etc. But its ok now. Im going to do 3 or 4 rounds of this and switch to Atkuns. Then modified Atkins after I get the initial phase of Atkins under control. Atkins is not as strict on the food. But you also dont lose as much weight. I also am going to keep up the grapefruit before every meal. Well see what happens. Oh! I do find myself craving food. But I try to keep myself busy to keep my mind off of it. Hope this helps!

Also to answer your question...i notice it now after 11lbs. My pants are getting bigger. I also eat both the grapefruit and the drink. I read somewhere to drink or eat it 10 minutes prior to eating...seems to work!

Thank you so much Bea that information helps alot. I was eating the grapefruit after but i'm going to switch to eating it before my meals. I am also planningto switch to Atkins as well after about 5 rounds. My problem is drinking my water, I really need o work on that. I think I'll try adding crystal light to a few of my glasses per day and see if that get me through at least 8 glasses a day. i've been walking 45 mins a day so that should also help. I will give my weight loss update at the end of my first round. Thanks

I dont drink it caffeine. I dont like water either. But crystal light helps. I make the mistake of weighing myself every morning...sometimes surprised sometimes dissapointed. Day 10 still at 11lbs lost. 2 more days! I have to say that you get used to the diet and cravings on the second week arent as bad. But Ive decided to only go off f

I have some other questions. When you make you eggs can you put vegetables like mushroom, spinach etc in them (omlette style) or do you have to just do it plain? Does anyone saute' their vegetables with oil (Olive oil etc) or just butter.Do you have to drink the skim milk or tomato juice at nights?

you can add anything into egg as long as not white onion, white vegetable, no sugar, no flour........

Well I lost 11lbs total. I went on vacation and gained 4 back... next round starts today at 198. I hope to lose 11 more. That will put me at 187. Its working however if you go off of it in totality...youll gain weight back. Im happy to have lost 8 though. The exercise is helping also.

Hi Bea, lovely you have 11 off......keep going. Me, I have no luck. I lost only 15 lbs in total for 2 round only. after that, no matter how many round I take, it is not working.......adding execrise won't help. Now, I still cut out sugar, rice, noodle, pasta but I will have whole wheat bread in the morning........i will take fruit for snack.......so far so good, no gain back.....just don't lose weight

Hi,guys iv been reading your reviews on the grapefruit diet and congratulations to the great sucess of your weightloss results!Iv been doing this diet for the past four days,im on my fifth day now,hoping to do this for 3 weeks =/!but yeah il do whatever it takes to atch the pounds drop!..I started of at 12 stones and 5 pounds..Now I weigh at: 11 stones 11 pounds.So far iv lost 6 pounds which Im realy happy about!Hoping to go down to eight stones,fingers crossed!Lets see how day five goes..going to have my fruit for lunch now...so hungry!..all the best with your diet..

Hi Sharsh. I am nottaking any of those meds but I am currently taking BP meds and this diet works just fine. The only thing my doctors told me is to wait 1 hours after I take my med (Which is normally once a day early in the morning) before I eat or drink the grapefruit.

Hi All the posts I've read are very inspiring! Today was only my first day, unfortunately all I had this morning was the grapefruit & coffee and then i had a massive headache. I take celexa its a hinderance. Also you gotta be careful the grapefruit could counter the meds. Ask your doctor. Ive been fine with it.

Im not killing myself with the exercise zoee. my advice is to not do that yet. Maybe later when your weight loss slows down you can incorporate more into it. Unless your already working out aa normal. Plus youll burn out.. i do 1/2 hour of aerobic activity trying to keep my heart rate at target. 3 to 4 nights a week. Thats all im doing for now. Couple more rounds of this diet and Im going to do P90x.l because I need the muscle tone.
As of today day 4 I started at 205.8 and Im at 194.4 I lost all the weight from vacation lol. This week Ive lost 5.5lbs. For a total weight loss of 11lbs
Im hoping for 6 more lbs next week. My.goal is 189.
Dd Youre doing awesome congrats on your weight loss. Its always hard at first. I used to weight 275 about 3 years ago. I plateaued at 205 about a year ago and have tried everything to lose the additional 40 I needed. This is working very very well for me. Im going to do 2 to 3 more rounds of it then i hope to be my final goal of 165. Then Im going to incorporate Atkins and then modified Atkins to get my body used to carbs again. DTS, you are not following the diet correctly. there is no oatmeal in this diet. you must eat 2 Eggs and 2 Bacon and half grapefruit, cannot change it. Everyday eat the same till day 12, make sure no potato, no yam, no break, no rice, no pasta, no noodle, no flour, no cake, no dessert, no white veg (onion, califlower..etc), no sugar, no sugar during cooking......coffee only 1 cup with splendar instead of sugar.....

DTS Flour of any kind has carbs in it. The only carbs allowed on.this diet are from whats listed on the diet. I dont know what curry has in it as far as carbs go. You need to check it. This diet is specific. I wouldnt deviate. The only thing Im eating thats different are the eggs. I hate eggs. I eat more bacon in the morning. I have 2 large salads with the items Im allowed and usually put lean chicken and or bacon in it. I also eating a lot of dressing. The grapefruit is critical. It helps keep your insulin in check. This causes your brain to use glycogen from your fat stores instead of the carbs youre eating...
Im only doing this diet for 2 or 3 more rounds. Ive lost 13lbs total. It would have been 18 but i went.on vacation and went a little nuts lol. Im on.round 2 day 8. Friday is my last day. Im doing real well with the carb cravings now. I do have sugar free candies on hand...hard candy when I feel I need something sweet. Its been helping.

Thanks zoeee...I would say youve got a lot less to lose than I do. But youve lost what 4lbs in 8 days? Thats pretty good! I had to lose 40lbs..now only 27. getting closer. Im sure the weight loss will taper when I get closer to my goal. For now Im happy with the results!

Afanta I missed your post earlier. Check the carb count in the whole wheat bread and fruits. Grapefruit is different than other fruits as far as your insulin is concerned. If youre wanting to lose more that is cut those out. A little more cardio might help too. I lost 40lbs in 2 months on thos diet before. I think youve probably plateaued. Thats happened to me before but I changed a few things and started losing again. Let me know if that helps. :)

Hi Bea, i am no longer on grapefruit diet, i eat regular, just still keep eating grapefruit at least to maintain the weight. after 2 round of the diet, i am no longer able to loose weight, so I stop it and just eat regularly. When I am on this diet, I do execrise too but not help. I will try to this diet later time......and see it works.

Sometimes I go off the diet totally eat lots of crap.then go back on it starts it up again.

Hi Bea, good for you. I lost 15 lbs after 2 round. After that, 3rd, 4th, 5th, till 2 month ago, no matter how hard I follow and execrise, it is in yo yo stage. down 3 then up 3.......nowadays I gain back 4 lbs......but I didn't gain inch, so happy about it. Right now I eat 1 slice of bread in the morning then lunch keep no rice, no pasta, no carb thing or I will do opposite.....just allow myself 1 meal has carb only......I still drink grapefruit juice. I don't have weight lose but at least keep it......my friend tried another one, called kiwi diet and she loes 3 lbs after 8 days.....not bad ! I want to try too.....

DTS - if you die hard want to lose weight, then follow tight the diet, once you see the result, you don't feel pain anymore. this is just a 12 days, not 12 months war game......you just scarife and suffer (as you just begin the diet) for 12 days and you exchange 7-10 lbs lose, think about it....7-10 lbs......

breakfast must eat 2 eggs (you can scramble, make omelet, steam egg, fry egg...whatever way) + 2 turkey bacon (this is very good, i eat that a lot, 2 slice only 60 cal......try brand "butterball") and you can add cucumber in your breakfast, you can add vegetable too.....this is a big breakfast, you won't feel hungary

what if i eat 2 eggs boiled for breakfast,salad for lunch and salad/chicken and 1 curry for dinner. I am allergic to bacon. does that work...

DTS, you cannot eat turkey or Chicken? if you can eat both, you can have the turkey bacon, go check in the supermarket, it is not same as regular bacaon as you think.......if you don't follow diet, it is not working.....

Hi DTS. I'm from the caribbean so i know alot about curry and I can safely tell you it's safe to eat and it does not have any carb counts. I've been doing the grapefruit diet for about four weeks now and my goal is 10 pounds a months. Over the past four weeks i've lost 15 pounds so far. I will be honest I do not stick to the diet all the time. The first 12 days i followed it strickly and lost 7 pounds which was great because i'm close to my monthly goal.I don't always have the bacon, there are times when i have dinner for breakfast (like vegetables with steak, fish or chicken. Or vegetable chicken soup with salad); sometime i have a snack during the week (but it a protein snack). I am still loosing weight at a rate of 3-5 pounds a week, which I am very happy with. What makes the diet not work is eating processed carbs even wheat is something you should try and stay away from until prob after 3 rounds. I guess what i'm doing is a grapefruit atkins combo diet and it's working for me. plus because of allthe protein and the lack of sugar and carbs i'm eating, my body is getting lean and I look like i've lost more than 15 pounds (at least thats what people are telling me).

I tired this diet before a year ago and it did not work for me because I got bored with eating the same thing over and over. this time I decided to follow it as closely as possible but tweek it a bit so that i can continue with it long term and make it a life style change.Bea I met a lady this week who has make the grapefruit diet life style change. She started at 352 pounds 10/2011 and as of last week is down to 187 pounds an average of 15 pounds a month. The advice she gived me was to tweek the diet to make it my own. She said that after the first two rounds she started to eat bread but not bread made from yeast or white flour; she eats a bread call "ezekiel bread" and also eat a flat bread (almost like pita) whole wheat that she buys from a jewish bakery. On the days she does feel like a little more carbs she eats it early in the day and does not eat any carbs after 1pm (not even fruits, with the exception of the grapefruit).

Hi. DTS, I change how i east from week to week. For e.g this week so far:

MONDAY
Breakfast -A Large vegetable(green peppers, spinach,little cheese) and turkey bacon omlette. 1/2 pink grapefruit, cup of earl gray tea.

I was feeling a little hungry so I eat a cup of homemade low sodium chicken vege soup as a snack.

Lunch - Extra large grill chicken salad, with lettuce, tomatoes, banana peppers,and grilled chicken breast with a bowl of hot homemade soup. 1/2 grapefruit, cup of peppermint tea and a bottle of water.

Dinner - I avocado salsa (1 med tomato, 1 med avocado chopped), grilled whole talapia and steamed vegetables. 1/2 grapefruit, 16 oz crystal light.

TUESDAY
Breakfast - I had left overs from my dinner the night before, 1/2 grapefruit, cup pepermint tea bottle water.

Lunch - Large salad, chicken soup ( no noodles)crystal light, 1/2 grapefruit a bottle water

Dinner - scrambled eggs with bacon (turkey), extra large mug of Earl Gray tea, 6 oz grapefruit juice.
I dont eat pork so the turkey bacon works great for me as it's 100% turkey.

Thanks DD. I think the lady who lost 187 pounds must had a lot of self determination. I appreciate her determination. I am 175 pounds at 25 years need to reduce 10 pounds min/month to reach my goal weight of 140 pounds by dec. I need to loose 10 pounds by oct 2nd week hope i loose weight.... :(

Awesome DD! yes Im getting sick of the food. Im at day 13 and lost 10lbs this round. Total of 15lbs. I noticed that Im having to take laxatives though! Not lovin that! Saturday morning is my official weigh in. I hope I make my goal of 189. 1 more pound. Im making little goals for myself to keep myself motivated. Usually around 5lbs

what should i do i cant take meat in the raw format i tried today but was unable to eat turkey bacon too i am seeing it raw i can eat which is fully cooked only :(

DTS, Turkey Bacon you have to pan fired or boil it, not just eat like this......you have to cook the bacon.

For your case that hate bacon so much, just eat eggs and any meat with no flour, no breaded for breakfast and make sure lunch and dinner eat no carb and try start with, i think you can lose 5 lbs after 1 week.....

breakfast- 2 boiled eggs and 2 slices of bacon +1/2 grape fruit
lunch-salad+1salamon fish+1/2 grape fruit
dinner-2 salomon fish and 1 curry+1/2 grape fruit

is this diet fine????????
