Grapefruit Diet

Summary

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

Description

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

History

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Criticism

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

Hi everyone
I started 3/2/09 on the diet weighing in at 172 #'s. I’m 4/11 1/2 in height and this is the heaviest I ever been since being 125 #'s 4 years ago. To tell you the truth I wear my weight pretty well from what other's tell me, I guess because it show's mostly in my bottom which seems to be the center of attention to everyone. Anyway, too much said I'm on my second day and I can't help but use splenda in my coffee only 2 packets...is this bad? Also, instead of drinking skim milk I'm drinking 2% milk with a packet of splenda... is this bad frown I'm happy to hear everyone's success, it's a real motivation!!!

The diet is ketogenic, but just barely. I went into dietary ketosis on this diet but the keto sticks barely turned. Garpefruit lowers insulin levels somehow. I know that grapefruit is forbidden on Atkins but it really does help with hyperinsulinism. Take a multivitain with this diet and skip the last snack and you should lose slowly but steadily. Cheers

Hi! Glad I found this message board! I started this diet on March 2nd my weight was 176. Today is day 8 and I am down to 169.2. Ive been 169 since 3 days ago due to the fact that I decided to drink on Friday. It didnt make me gain weight but it stopped my loss for 3 days! So.....I would say dont drink unless its on your off days. I have a lot of energy and do not crave carbs or sweets anymore. Please see that Plan that I follow below. And yes...I eat TONS of cheese and drink diet coke all the time. Cheese wont affect you as long as its FULL FAT. Dont buy the low fat or fat free cheese. Eating cheese is like eating meat. Low Carb and high in fat.
So Please see my plan that I follow below! Any questions let me know! My goal is to lose 20 more pounds! The last two paragraphs tell you what you can and cannot eat! Good Luck to all! This is like the first diet I have stuc kto for more than 5 days:)

The Grapefruit Diet: What You Can Eat
In most versions of the Grapefruit Diet, a small variety of foods are required at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and at bedtime. Dieters are encouraged to drink black coffee and plenty of water throughout the day.
Sample Meal Plan:
* Breakfast
2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, black coffee, 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice
* Lunch
Salad with salad dressing, unlimited meat, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice
* Dinner
Red or green vegetables (except starchy ones such as peas, beans, corn, sweet potatoes) or salad, unlimited meat or fish, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice
* Bedtime snack
8 ounces skim milk
In the Grapefruit Diet you can use all the butter and salad dressing you desire and prepare foods in any method, including fried. Grapefruit juice must be unsweetened. Any food or beverage not on the diet is not allowed. Snacking is only permitted after dinner. Drink 64 ounces of water daily. Eat all of the approved foods.

Grapefruit Diet or Grapefruit Juice Diet revolves around eating half a grapefruit or drinking an 8-ozs glass of unsweetened grapefruit juice before each meal. Coffee and tea are also permitted.

The things you may have during this diet are:
Red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, green onions, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, chili (no beans), mayonnaise, any cheese, hot dogs, coleslaws, regular salad dressing, green vegetables, 1 tsp dried nuts and butter pickles.

The things you may not have during this diet are:
White onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, corn, starchy vegetables, potato chips, peanut butter, pasta, corn chips, jelly or jam, sweet pickles, pretzels, fruit and low-fat/fat free/diet salad dressings.

Hello,

This diet didn't work for me when I tried it in 2004, maybe because I was eating Maple bacon for breakfast and at lunch with my salad. The sugar in the maple bacon probably wasn't good for the diet..... I am now at my heaviest weight ever 190lbs, and I stand 5'3". Although I carry my weight well, would love to loose about 30lbs. I started the diet 5 days ago and have already lost 8lbs = NOW 182lbs.

I don't eat the grapefruit, but I do drink the 100% grapefruit juice with every meal.
I don't drink and coffee, tea, or anything other than the WATER, GRAPEFRUIT JUICE and SKIM MILK.
I've choose the option to eat a salad with luch and dinner, I may try some veggies with my next 12 day cycle.
I do a light workout 15-30 minutes almost everyday.......

I will post an update soon!!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!!

Does anyone know why celery is not allowed? I've been on the diet for two days, and I've had a little celery in my tuna salad. Celery really isn't starchy. It does have a bit of sodium, but if bacon is on the diet, that can't be the reason for the restriction. Thanks in advance for any info.

Honestly, I think your fine eatin celery. I think it has something to do with the water content. Which doesnt make any sense either! SOme versions say you can have celery. See, they also say no white onions and I occasionally eat white onions...by the way Im down 1 more pound yeah

Hey everyone! I started this diet two weeks ago, after the FIRST week, I had lost 10 pounds. I did everything I was supposed to do. I ate the breakfast, two eggs, two pieces of bacon and 4 oz of grapefruit juice, I had a chicken breast with a salad and vinegeratte, and 4 oz of grapefruit juice and for dinner, chicken breast or steak, with green beans and 4 oz of grapefruit juice. I ended up cheating over the weekend just a bit, but then go right back on the following week. I have had success so far. I drink ALOT of water. I use to be a big coffee and tea drinker but I find myself craving water and especially the more you drink the more your body wants it. I keep it basic, I dont try to add anything and I may be weird but I dont get tired of eating the same thing. I have several pounds to lose in less than 2 months and I hope I am able to get it off! I weighed 230 when I started and now I weigh 220 this is after the first week. I will check back in in two weeks to let everyone know where I am at. I am going to walk in the morning and evenings to get some cardio in. I have done this diet several times and everytime I have done it, it has worked.

I got confused because there are so many different versions on the internet, some say drink 4oz of grapefruit juice and some say drink 8oz. Can anyone clarify? I have decided to just have half a real grapefruit to ensure its fresh and there are no additives. Thanks!

Yeah its really easy and when i get on my salads I'm happy because they are so good. I change up the salad dressing so I dont get bored but its crazy how you dont really have the craving for any other foods. I love it.

But I am happy that i am still not gaining and I am losing and I am eating everyday (NOT STARVING MYSELF TO LOSE WEIGHT).. This is the perfect diet I believe. Total of 12lbs since January doing the diet on and off. I do however need to lose 10 pounds by July 4th wkend and its doable, if I continue my on and off routine.. yay me..

All I had today(which is my first day) was grapefruit and I tried to shove some eggbeaters down my throat because i think they are disgusting, so I didnt eat all of them. When I went on the diet, I had 2 pieces of turkey bacon, eggs, grapefruit juice. lunch, a big salad with a little cheese and a couple croutons, fish a veggies or another salad for dinner. Okay , I was wondering : the people who say they gained their weight back and more , is it because you returned to your old eating habits ? .... cause I plan on completely changing the way I eat after I finish . But I just want to make sure my body isn't going to hold on to just anything I eat after I complete this diet .Also I am eating turkey bacon instead?

I have probably about 30 pounds to lose and surely don't want to gain all right back . Once I am done with this , I plan on eating NO white flour, NO white sugar , ALOT of soy and vegan products , AND becoming a WORKOUT-AHOLIC :) ... but I just want to know if this diet is meant to be just " temporary" weight loss ? Because that's how people are making it seem.

I know it would be better to just eat right and exercise more , but I need this jump start because I am just stuck with my current weight and HAVE been for like 2 years .

Someone please let me know :) Thank you !

my experience...

i've noticed that i gain wt. with the more cheese i eat, 2.5lbs in 2 days as of today & it's the only modification i made. maybe it's a case by case issue.

i've noticed to that for me there are plateau's where the weight-loss just stops. that's why i'm here to pick up tips on modifying it.

i'd like some feedback from people who have had success, especially with the following questions:

how is it that you are encouraged to go back for 2nd's on meat but are limited to 800 calories a day? does the caloric intake make a difference for you?

what's your experience with sauces (A1, ketchup, etc.)?

has anybody had negative results using cheese?

my conclusion,
i think the best way to approach this diet is to use it as a quick-fix. lose the most amount of weight in the quickest amount of time. diet & exercise is the correct choice of course, but what is wrong with shedding the pounds quickly & then shifting gears into a healthier lifestyle? would it not be an quicker & easier transition? so i think it has it's place... right at the beginning if you have significant amounts to lose. at least that's my plan, get it off then hit the gym & the lean cuisine's.

Hi,
I tried this diet back in 2007. It does work! I did it for 12 days straight and lost about 13 lbs with little excersise. But I didn't cheat at all. I stuck with it. I got pregnant shortly after, so I didn't get to lose more like I wanted. At the time I weighed about 160 when I lost the 13 lbs.

Now I weight about 180 @ 5'2. My daughter is one, so I am ready to do this again. I know someone mentioned breastfeeding...and I think it is safe to do because I am still breastfeeding my daughter. You are not starving yourself, and what I love about this diet is you can still include things you like such as bacon.
When I did the diet back in 07 I used turkey bacon, and it still worked for me. You can also include the skim milk which is good for you and baby..not sure how old your baby is, but since mine only breastfeeds about 2-3 times a day now, and has other foods in her diet, I'm not worried about my milk upsetting her..because it doesn't now that she is older. However, if you have a newborn I would hold off for a bit, because their tummies can be a bit more sensitive than and older child.

I bought everything i needed, and will be starting this diet today. I will let you all know how I'm feeling in a couple days.

My issue is snacking alot...cookies, chips, cake etc...so I know the first 2-3 days is kind of hard, but i am determined to stick with it. I am going away for the summer and want to look good. :)

Will keep you posted.

This diet was given to me by my md. for weightloss only thing I'm not suppose to stop for those 2 days they say to stop the diet. So I've been on the diet for about a month and 2 weeks. Straight.. I've lost a total 34 lbs. My clothes feel loose on me and I went from a size 18-20 to a size 14 in pant sizes. So I know the diet works. I have no doubt of that.. but I have a question why do you need the 2 day break? Oh and also I also worked out every day for 45 min.s each day from a workout called walk away the pounds 3 mile. with 2lbs weights. This question is directed to anyone who can answer my question and also to Jay. Please help.

Ok you guys here is the verdict so far...an update for those who are interested: My day 12 ended on Friday. I lost 6 lbs in all. By the 5th day the scale said I lost 5 lbs. I did little excersise...except running after my toddler, and walking around the mall etc.
I pretty much stuck it out all the way through. I've been eating or drinking a grapefruit before or after every meal since then.
This has totally eased the cravings for junk, and I have no desire to snack every minute like before or eat between meals.
I had real bad swelling in my right foot almost everyday that I figured was from alot of sodium intake...I just realized that the swelling stopped altogehter! I wore my heels to a graduation party over the weekend, and it fit! ( it didn't before)
My clothes also fit better, and I don't feel stuffed in them. I'm going to keep at it in order to lose more, and incorporate the gf since it's been working wonders.
I also notice my belly looks alot flatter. alot of people are noticing..it seems its burning the belly fat for me!
The only complaint that I have is by day 4-5 I had some serious cramping and naseua. Which i thought was due to gf overload. But it didn't last very long.

My mother also did this diet along with me, and has lost about 8 lbs. She went for a checkup and was told by her doctor that her cholesterol has dropped drastically...this was an issue she was having before eating gf and was told she should workout...but the gf has helped her.

Anyway. will be back soon for another update...Good luck to all.

I started this diet on 5/21/09 and so far I have lost 5pds in 5 days without even execising. Iam 220pds hoping to slim down to 180. Also, for thoughs that plan on drinking I recommend drinking hard liquor with either diet coke or water with slice of lemon in it (really good as a chaser actually). I dont recommed drinking while on this diet but if you are borderline alchy like me follow what I said about the hard liquor (that means no beer/cider etc..) beer is loaded with yeast and cider has way to much sugar. I will post in a few weeks with my progress.

Good luck to all!

breakfast - 2 eggs 2 pieces bacon & half grapefruit (as said to do in program diet)

lunch - salad with either chicken/pork/steak... basically any meat i can find in the fridge. And half grapefruit.

Dinner - any kind of meat doesnt matter, with salad and half grapefruit.. aswell anything vegtable to go with dinner.

it is pretty much exactly as specified to do in diet plan. Just follow that and you will drop the weight my friend :)

Sorry people I've been busy. Basically I ate the following...
Breakfast two extra large eggs any style mostly scrambled with some chopped yellow onions salt and pepper, and half a grapefruit.
Lunch I eat a salad romaine lettuce and iceburg lettuce with cucumbers, tomato's,a piece of chicken cooked with pam olive oil. Yellow onions cooked and half a grapefruit.
Dinner I eat chicken or beef cooked with pam olive oil and yellow onions and some boiled brocolli with melted cheese. And the half grapefruit.
At night I drink a glass of skim milk.

No snacks. And lots of water I only drink water now. No diet soda's or any coffee because caffefine hinders the insulin process and you need this process at its peak in order to drop the pounds.
You have to do a 45 min. workout that includes weight training at least of 2 lbs each during the 45 minute workout. Aerobic.
You can stop for like a day so you'll be on the exercise routine for 6 days. Also, if you exercise like this every day for 6 days when you do actually cheat for a meal or eat something you shouldn't. You don't gain weight the next day you either stay the same or loose any ways.

Good luck guys let me know if you have any more questions. I feel great after everything.. and I just dropped down 6 lbs. so far in the last 5 days.

Any one have an idea of why you have to stop for two days for the diet.. Because I'm still on and have been for a month and 3 weeks.

omg I am so frigging excited so here is truth I signed up for a gym about a month ago April 27th. I was working out almost four times a week for about 2 hours my start weight was 240LBS I could not of believe how much I weighed.... my original weight use to be around 160 pound am 5"9 in height... well do the math I gain a lot of weight over the period of 4 years... so I was working out and I was only manage to shed about 3.4 pounds I was still eating the way I did I was discourage that I was not shedding the pounds as quickly as I would like so I kind of stop going to the gym I lost motivation...... then I discover this website and I decided that I would give this diet a try with the aid of working out... I started on Monday. When I took my weight I was 236 pounds... I began working out on Tuesday I am keeping track of my weight loose because for me it is a personal motivation.... I must admit after being on this diet for four days I have a huge bust of energy I actually run for 20 minutes on the treadmill something I was unable to do for years. and I feel much better throughout the day I weighed myself and I am 233.6 pound ... wow I guess the combination of diet and exercise really help... to be honest I cheated yesterday I had a rice crispy and a cheese croissants... with that being said I lost a total of 6.4 pounds all together but with the grapefruit diet I manage to loose 2.4 pound in four days. Those add up to a total weight loss of 6.4

TO EVRYONE ON THIS SITE TRYING TO LOOSE WEIGHT JUT REMEBER THAT IT IS NOT AN EASY JOURNRY TO SHED THOES UNWANTED POUNDS BUT YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU PUT UR MIND TO IT AND TRACKING YOUR PROGESS ON THIS SITE REALLY HELPS IN KEEPING YOU MOIVATED...
