Grapefruit Diet

Summary

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

Description

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

Breakfast:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

Lunch:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

Dinner:

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

History

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Criticism

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

I started at 230 lbs. I'm 5'3 in height. And I'm 30 year old mother of 3 girls. and now because of this diet and exercise I'm at 196lbs.. and counting. because my goal is 120 lbs. I did it before and I can do it again.. Ofcourse the first time I lost 80 lbs. I was weighing 210 lbs. and I went down to 130 lbs. But I did my own diet.. and although it was all fat free low fat etc etc.. I lost it great and fast like 3 lbs.. a week weight loss but when I did it I did something I shouldn't have.. I exercised right after eating my lunch like right after.. and that I was told was a form of bulemia... and shouldn't be doing.. and so I was harming myself.. to the point that I was taken off the diet by my doctor and when I got off I gained even more than what I lost.. I was at 130 lbs.. and then I gained weight and got up to 220 lbs. So you see exercising at the right time of day with sufficient time for your stomach to digest your meal (one hour after to a one hour and a half after a meal) is very very important. This time I am doing it healthy and right.. I exercise two hours after I eat my breakfast and I eat my lunch at 2pm and I'm doing good so far no cravings lots of energy.. and I feel great. Lost 34 lbs.. on the grapefruit diet and in no time just one month and 3 weeks in.

I hear you girl.. after that happened it took me so much time and effort to get back on the a diet and do the whole thing again.. It was so much harder the second time after the weightgain than the initial start you know. Well good luck to you.. and Congratulations on your way to a better you.

To Ogarro.
Hope everything works out and I got a dvd off of target.com called walk away the pounds 1,2, and 3 mile workout by leslie sansone. I got it because it helped me originally loose 80 lbs. So I know it works. And when it rains etc.. and you can't make it to the gym.. You can workout at home with your water bottle bathroom nearby and ac and you can even workout in your underwear LOL.. though I suggest you wear workout clothes to help keep up the heat your body gives out during strenous activity to promote with the water weight. And I also got this waist trim belt from walmart that I wear over my clothes.. And the Dvd.. thing it comes with the water weights 2.lbs. each or you can purchase 2lbs. weights like at walmart.. I did that.. and well I started with the 1 mile everyday for like 1 week.. then when I felt I can do a little more I did the 2 mile for like 3 weeks and when I felt hey let me try the 3 mile, I was able to do it and I felt great.. I've been doing the 3 mile everyday for like 6 days a week. Its 45 min. workout the 3 mile and I feel great. So good luck.. I am also thinking of changing the weights to 3 lbs. to stimulate weight loss. I don't know so far what do you think Bittersweet?

See ya guys.. Lots of love to all.. and keep thinking positive.. before you know it you'll be a new you!!!

Hi, guys. So it's 31/may/09 and I just started my Grapefruit Diet today. I ate the 1/2 grapefruit and 2 eggs with chicken bacon and lipton white tea (mango and peach) with 1tbsp honey. Lunch I had 3 small drumlets of chicken and salad with 1tbsp french dressing and dinner same boring with romaine lettuce and 8pm i had my glass milk. So, i'll see how this goes.

I was oiginally on the fat smash diet where i only did the detox phase and lost 7lbs. So right now i'm 230.8 lbs. I think i want to do daily posts to keep me motivated. My goal is to be 130lbs and maintain it. I know i have a very long way to go. But i love eggs, bacon and chicken and water so I think if this diet really works I should do fine.

The diet also says 1/2 a grapefruit before each meal but i split it in 3 and have a 1/3 before each meal. I hope that doesn't defeat my diet.

Congrats Bittersweet and Ogarro on your weight loss.
The hip hop tape sounds exciting and fun to do. Let me know how it works out for you.
To Ogarro remember you'll start to loose alot at first, its usually water weight.. and then you'll see that you start to meet your goal of 2-3 lbs a week. This amount of weight loss per week is really good.. because these pounds don't come back once you loose them..When you loose alot quick and continue to shed the pounds in an abnormal weight due to any number of things.. the pounds come back, double time.. and it usually stomps us to try to get back on the wheel again. You know.. so keep to a realistic goal.. and surely you'll see ever lasting results later on in life.. :)
Another interesting thing I noticed on the diet.. is that I would remain about the weight for a couple of days, even though I am eating right and exercising every day.. My first emotion was depretion.. because I was being so faithful and exercising and nothing for like 4 days.. well when I approached the subject with my doctor he explained that muscle ways more then fat and that as women we tend to gain water weight when we are ovulating and during menstruation.. and that as soon as all that pasts we will see a difference in weight.. Also, sometimes you have to change things up a little you know in the diet.. Mainly in the lunch time.. I don't know why but it does work when you kind of do a change in the meat consumption during lunch.. Instead of what ever meat you've been eating during lunch you substitute it with another type.. and YEAH it works.. You'll start to see the weight change again and loose. Also, in the exercise it works as well.. if you change it up a little adding a 3lb. weight instead of your usual 1lb. or 2lbs one.. and the exercising method as well. I have this total body workout dvd from 6 second abs.. and I do it like 3 times a week and the rest of the week I use the dvd walk away the pounds 3 mile.. and sometimes I go ahead and do 3mile in the morning and a 2 mile workout in the evening. Just some helpful advice..

Oh and my results are:
I started at weight 230lbs. Height 5'3
Now almost 2 months later I'm at 194lbs.
A total of 36 lbs. In a week and 3 days it will be 2 months only.
An average of 2-4 lbs. a week.

For Jo-Joc
Maybe you need to use turkey bacon instead of the chicken bacon.. and a light dressing for your salad in the afternoon. And instead of a drumstick.. try having chicken breast.
The Tea part with the hunny, is probably whats working against you. The whole diet of grapefruit is that its cutting out all sugar.
And we have to remember fat doesn't turn into fat.
Sugar does.
The grapefruit you have to have the whole half at each meal.
Also, don't eat after 6pm.

Oh and the doctor explained to me that caffefine hinders the insulin process and this process needs to be at its peak for optimal weight loss. So you won't be loosing until you limit the caffefine intake.. I heard a cup a day in fine as long as you use splenda or some type of sugar supliment.
I love coffee but I only have one cup like 3 times a week.

Remember to drink lots of water. :)

Let me know if any of this helps you.

Don't be too hard on yourself.. I've had weak moments too.. Hey at least if you exercised that day you won't weigh more the next day, you should at least remain the same weight.. Thats why I say if your going to eat regular for one meal and again this is one meal like one day and back in the saddle again.. You must MUST exercise that day.. I don't care if you do it like at 11 pm at night.. point is you put your mind to it and you exercise. Now this only works if you excercise regularly.. Its proven and I am proof of that. But I resisted also last night from eating icecream because I have this really nice event coming up in the last few days of August and I want to buy a nice dress and of course I want to look good.. Also because during that little escapade I can't really be on a diet because I won't be home or have access to a kitchen. I'm going to be staying at a hotel. And breakfast I can probably remain on the diet and lunch but dinner its going to have to be at a restaurant and who knows maybe I can manage to order something low in fat.. but you know how it is in restaurants they cook with alot of preservatives and they don't usually cut along the corners to bring you something completely fat free or healthy for you. On the other hand.. Hey I its going to be like a mini vacation 3 days 4 nights .. come on I want to eat normal too.. Oh I don't know what to do? What do you guys think I should do?
Sassy
posted 2-Jun-2009 11:05am

By the way Jo-Joc Ribs isn't too bad.. its meat and meats good.. Although I don't know about the pig part.. because lets face it pigs eat garbage so HMMM... I guess your good and hey you don't eat ribs every day either. So hmm.. not too bad.. French fries are a no-no of course but if you ate just a couple to quench your desire of eating them.. not tooo bad. EXERCISE for sure after that meal remember always wait an hour after eating in order to exercise. And do this REGULARLY exercising that is. And try to limit yourself to only cheating that one time for that one meal.. and stick to your goal. Remember good foods such as cakes, candies, fried foods, pizza, chineese etc.. is always always going to be in existence and they aren't going anywhere so they can wait till you look good and feel good.. and then you can one of those like maybe even more than 1 time a week.. but you should eat healthy the rest of the week.. You don't want to go back to that aweful stage in life where you feel stuck.
AND EXERCISE.. if its raining, snowing etc.. whatever you don't have gas in the car to get you to the gym.. Buy yourself an exercise dvd like WALK AWAY THE POUNDS 1,2 AND 3 MILE BY LESLIE SANSONE.. I'm not trying to sell anything.. I'm just serious its great you can follow along easily and it works.. again me proof. lost 84 lbs on it. And you can do it in the comfort of your own home.. whichever miles you want to do and rain shine or snow your good and you get your exercise done. I have billy blanks dvd but when I tried it I was like man he needs to be subtittled because man he talks fast.. and most of the time I was like okay he could at least talk slowly and or announce the moves he going to be doing before we have to actually do them.. so we don't bump into the walls fall on our faces out of sheer frustration and confusion. LOL thats why I prefer the walk away the pounds one. She speaks slowly and announces the moves before you have to do them so that you know what to do and you can prepare for the move your body has to do. MUCH better.

Which reminds me Ogarro how's the abs hip hop dvd coming along.. is it easy to follow or is it like Billy blanks alot of breathing hard and very few syllables getting out in the translation?

Hey has anyone ever tried acai berry pills and the colon cleanser.. I bought the pills at gnc and this gnc preventive nutrition® cleansing formula (with a pic of digestion symbol) but it doesn't really state it cleans the colon.. but the lady said it does..

This is too like loose more.. and the acai is to make your skin tight while the pounds come off.
Anyone? Any advice? How about on a good colon cleanser thats sold over the counter?

Hi,

I heard from a friend that Prune Juice or Trim Maxx is good for colon cleansing.

I also exercised yesterday (walking, strength training and a little running). I also got Kim Kardashian's Fit in your jeans by friday amazing abs body sculpt and the ultimate butt body sculpt. It's very good i was sweating. I got it yesterday and did some exercises last night. It's good and unlike the billy banks you can really follow and the trainer tells you what's coming up and there's generally a count down.

So i did the whole half grapefruit instead of the 1/3 and i skipped the tea and drank water with all my meals.
Hopefully, i'll see some changes.

Good luck to everyone.

Hello Jo-joc thanks for the information and I'm sure you'll be able to see results daily.. at least a pound a day maybe even 2 or 3 a day.
As for the colon cleanse I got this one called health plus super colon cleanse but it says to take 4 capsules 3 times daily and that seems like a lot to take of pills. You know I hate pills..So maybe I'll try the one you reffered me to.

As for the dvd workout .. I'm going to search for it online.. LOL sounds good to me though. I work out for 45 min every day and thats about it.. but yeah if I can mix it up a little and work on my butt. well then thats a total PLUS! lol.

To annonymous I bought the super acai pills of 1000 mg from gnc and it tastes horrible.. there called vegetarian pills EWWLLLLL thats all I can say.. I've only been on them for 2 days now.. so its too soon to say if it works or not.. I am taking them to tighten my skin while I loose the pounds not for the whole weight loss theory. The colon cleanse I just want to take one pill daily and thats it.. not 4 or 12 daily.. I feel like if I do it.. I'll spend my whole day in the bathroom.. and thats no fun. LOL

Take care guys... or girls :)
Which reminds me Jo-joc your a female or male? Males loose much better and females have to go through hell with estrogen and hormones to loose..

Congrats Jo-joc, ummm if your doctor prescribed them are they like over the counter if so doesn't really matter if you take them or not.. unless you suffer from some kind of condition.. but if he like pulls them out of his office and says hey take these and you'll see a difference ... speaking from personal experience go ahead and do it because it'll work. And I hate hate pills and you know what else.. I hate shots too lol.. and spiders, and snakes, and I can't stand rats or roaches. But thats just me.. and I love guys with dimples LOL ;)
Umm Bitter sweet Congratulations.. don't be scared its your bodys way of adjusting to the diet and since your not eating carbs its like starving and using up those fatty cells we all have accumulated over a period of time.. so keep it up and You GO GIRL!

But that is an interesting question how long have you been on the diet?

Well I've got my anniversary coming up Saturday and how am I suppose to celebrate it without desserts and I really suck at surprises.. bought like 12 gifts which 10 of which I've already given to him.. because I'm weak .. anyways I found this really nice gift its an mp3 player with a screen 8 gbz and he can watch movies on them.. Congrats. Bittersweet as you continue on your diet.. You'll see that some weeks you'll loose quite a bit.. and as time passes you'll see it begin to slow down.. again quite a bit.. It will get harder and harder as your body tries to hold on to the fat it has.. thus begins the real struggle to continue to loose weight.. but don't let it get you down.. remember to spice things up with a change here and there in diet wise.. and in exercise.. I am sorry to hear you got injured that sucks.. trully.. but I was worried that with such a strong workout routine would have some side effects.. especially after a period of time that you were not as active and of course your body has to get use to the whole thing.. Thats why I suggested the walk away the pounds routine.. You start off at one mile and as your body adjusts itself you up it up with the 2 mile and let your body get acustomed to that level of exercise.. and when you feel strong enough go ahead and try the 3 mile.. again your body needs to work up to the level of fitness that keeps your heart rate raised but that you don't fall on your face or end up getting hurt. It all depends on what you've been doing these past few years your body has been accustomed to not exercising that when you jump into a very strong and abrupt routine of exercise your body strains and protests.. thats why you need to give your self time.. do exercise but don't over exert yourself.. basically the dvd I was talking about lets you gradually increase your level of fitness. Not selling guys... but I don't know of another dvd that lets you work up as you go.. and that is realistic. And I know it works from personal experience.

Start weight 230lbs.
weight now 191

I had a piece of this apple coffee cake.. thing a small slice really thin and it affected me.. gained some ounces the next day. Its true what they say about carbs.. once your body is limited from carbs once you do eat them they do stick to you later on.. which sucks.. I'm weak.. oh well.. important thing I don't quit.

By the way I got hubbie a foot spa, and a nice tie, and a telescope, and a 3 drawer charging drawer thing.. hope he likes it.. just need to gift wrap it.. Still have no clue as to what to do for the dessert thing I wanted to find something low in carbs and sugarless but no such luck.. and I don't know if we should celebrate our anniversary out at a restaurant eating regular or what? LOST totally lost... what do you guys think?

posted 5-Jun-2009 1:40pm

hey FATIMAN Congrats on getting started..The main thing is to drastically limit the portion size of your meals.. and all carbs.. no sodas not even diet sodas.. limit all coffee to maybe 3 times a week because it affects or slows down the process of loosing weight.. stick too salads during lunch with a light dressing no crutons cheese or bacon and eat it with a piece of chicken like the size of a deck of cards no bigger no sweets too. lots of water and exercise for at least 45 min.s dinner no later than 6pm.. meat and a portion of veggies and don't skip out on the skim milk at night. also no additional fruits other than the grapefruit .. they contain natural sugars and this is a no sugar no carb thing.

GOOD luck.

Amont I eat my grapefruit after I don't think it matters though.. I just kind of do it afterward because I get the conclusion that maybe it helps burn what ever you just ate you know.. well Good LUCK!

Hi Sassy,

Basically I eat the Grapefruit first, 2 boiled eggs and 2 slices bacon, lunch grapefruit hotdog and carrots cabbage and 1tbsp low calorie french dressing and dinner grapefruit chicken breast romaine lettuce 1tbsp french dressing. I think i might give this diet one more day because it doesn't seem tobe working for me.

Exercise basically 1mile walk with leslie sansone and kim kardashian butt blast 2-3 times a week. I must admit this past week ive been out a lot and i didn't eat right. I guess maybe this diet isn't for me. I don't know.

Hi Jo-joc,

Don't give up.. here's what I see from what your eating.. One you can't eat just any veggie.. it has to be either green or red veggie.. no carrots or celery or potatoes etc.. only green and or red veggies. any type of bellpeppers yellow onions. and garlic is good.. also i read somewhere that a teaspoon of olive oil extra virgen oil is good for you when trying to loose weight so I either cook my meat or chicken in it. and or I use the Pam olive oil it carrys the extra virgin oil.. and is also fat free. So that is what I do.. also,, You must MUST stick to what you are doing no loosing track of what you eat.. make sure you look at what you eat.. and think like this "if I eat this loaded carb and sugar thing I will have to work twice as hard to loose that extra pounds I will gain surely from eating this ... and think this too "isn't it hard just loosing the weight you've accumulated over the years to have to work twice as hard and delay your weight loss more time.." After you think this .. then that is just all you need to focus on to keep you from munching on all those things that are ultimately bad for you and that only add to your frustration on loosing the weight in the first place.. Believe me I'm not going to go back to my old ways.. when I reach my goal I will be eating what I like to eat but portion sized and with a veggie and not every day like I'll start with twice a week and the other days I'll eat healthy like this diet.. and if I see I can still look good and not gain alot then I will do it like three times and I will exercise 6 days a week. or mabye 5 I exercise now 6 days.. Well all I know is that loosing weight is so SOOOOO HARD! and gaining is too quick and easy. So we have to strive to succeed guys come on I am here for you guys.. write me and I'll help in any way possible.. I know you guys are strong and you can do it.. So Stick with it. Ok. NO hotdogs .. it's like real bad for you either way.. do the beef and or chicken and or fish and cut off what ever fat you can see on it before you cook it. and remember to see results quick don't eat more then the size of a deck of cards of the meet during the night time meal and it should be before 6pm.
Don't over exert yourself on the workouts.. you don't want to hurt yourself.. the goal is to get your body to gradually increase your metabolism and make your self or push your self on those walk away the pounds.. take it easy at first and then push your self on it the next and the next and on and on till you can do the 2 mile then all over again easy at first and then push your self to lifting those weights and kicking higher etc.. Okay.

Bittersweet.. that advice goes to you too.. STICK to it.. and you will see true results.. I went to the mall to see what size I am now in pants.. and i went from a size 20 to a size 12. So hey I 'm getting there. was able to button it and zip it up.. so come on.. Lets stick to it.. I haven't cheated in 3 weeks nothing and the weight is coming off.. Today I weigh 188 lbs. So come on guys you all are my inspiration as well to succeed as well.

GOOD LUCK and remain strong.. sooner you'll see results and before you know you'll be able to have a slick of chocolate cake and not feel guilty because you reached your goal and you changed the way you eat for a healthy beautiful inside and out new and improved you! :) Smile guys and send you lots of love.

Yesterday I stated off the way I should and then totally gave up it was so hard and when I weight myself I was 232lbs! I was 230.8 when I started. Then today I went to the store and when I came back it said 226.8 which is basically 227 (so thats the 3lbs from my starting weight 230)and I was so upset as I ate the bread today and had no grapefruit. So,I will eat a whole grapefruit tonight. I know itr probably won't help but it's worth a try.
I only have 3 grapefruits left. I'm on the broke end right now since I am trying to get all my school finances in order and arranging to go home in 3 weeks. I live in the caribbean but i go to university in Canada. So, I eat according to the diet until my grapefruits are done then i'll eat as healthy as possible and continue when i go home. I am determined to lose this weight and I know I will. I have learnt that it takes time. It didnt' take me 2 weeks to put on 10lbs so how do I ration that I will lose 10lbs in 2 weeks. But I will keep you guys updated daily with my weight and so on.

And I hope your back heals Bittersweet. Thanks for the inspiration guys!

To bittersweet,

I'm glad to see your back is doing better, I've been on the diet for 2 months on 16th of the month. It works girl.. And you are too sweet. I'm kind of under the weather with a flu I think.. and when I did my exercise I thought I was going to faint. What I did for the sore throat is drink lemonade with splenda. So I know now. and Motrin to help. Keep up the good job.

Jo-joc,
Wow bread huh? YUM but no we can't have that. Maybe a tiny piece but not the entire loaf. Carbs are a no no. But try not to fall off the wagon because it will be that much harder to loose and stay on track. Remember You'll always be able to eat those foods just not now. And exercise. Good luck. Sometimes to fight a craving. I take a whiff of it and that is enough to stop it. I don't how it works but it works for me.
Stay strong. Try to get the items you need before you run out. That way your not left with no other choice. I know its hard but I also know you are strong willed and you'll get there and be that much proud of your achievement.

Ogarro,
Long time no see.. how have you been? a little rice is going to kill you.. but at least you didn't eat like 4 cups you know. Now call it quits and no more cheating.. OK. stay strong and exercise..

Hi guys so I lost some weight. I am 225.8lbs.
When I started I was 230.8. So i lost a total of 5lbs exactly on the grapefruit diet so far. And in total I lost (245.? - 225.8) that's about 20lbs. I'm feeling happy.

Good luck to everyone!

Congrats Jo-joc on your weight loss.. Nice job! Soon you'll be able say you lost 40 lbs.. then 50 lbs.. very very soon you'll see.

I'm still loosing and now I've lost 43 lbs so far on this diet alone. and of course exercising 6 days a week.
I'm working it.. and I'm more flexible for it too.. I wasn't even able to cross my legs before when I weighed 230 lbs and I couldn't even shave good my legs before always had to use my left hand for the left leg.. now I can twist all the way around and shave everywhere with my right hand.. not to mention I can cross my legs again they look much slimmer and stronger.. My stomach has gone down tremendously.. I had a really ugly scar from my apendix I had out when I was 12 and so I'm alittle deformed around the belly.. one side is higher than the other side.. it was an emergency operation so they did their best and ulitimately saved my life but left me with a really ugly tummy oh well.. but its at least so little that I can start to see my abs start to define.. it is much more flatter than what I had.. people use to ask me if I was pregnant.. and I wasn't so you can imagine.. how low my self esteem was. But now I'm so much happier and healthier.

Still going strong..
bye guys.. and keep it up

Hello to everyone,
Okay I am now 53 lbs lighter from where I started which was weighing at 230lbs and I'm 5'3 30 years old 3 babies. I've stuck with this diet for about 3 months and have lost 53 lbs so it works guys.. And I'm a size 12 from a size 20 and up in pants. I still have the tummy but its not pronounced and its slimming down. Haven't really worked it out just kind of did my diet this one the grapefruit and did the exercise 5 times a week working out 45 min's a day in either the walk away the pounds 3 mile or the billy boot camp elite mission one and two. So we will see how it goes so far so good. I didn't want to loose alot quickly because that meant I'd gain it just as quickly. So I'm loosing like an average of 4-5 lbs a week. I'm craving foods though which sucks.. but in the long run I'll be healthier to when I can eat those foods I want and not worry. Also I have this really huge vein in my left knee that bugs the hell out of me it snakes up my thigh and it stings like a b*tch when I do my workouts. So I have to check that out. During and after I hurt like hell so it distracts me from pushing myself in the workouts which sucks big time.

Okay well there you guys have it my update hope you all are doing well and still loosing. Drop by and let me know where you are now.

bye bye love to all
