Grapefruit Diet

The epitome of a fad diet, though many say it works.

The grapefruit diet is really just a set of standard rules you follow for mealtimes. There are some variations in the rules, but they usually look something like this:

o Drink 8 8oz (64oz total) glasses of water each day.
o When eating a meal, stop when you are full.
o Follow the meal-plan (below) exactly, no substitutions and you have to eat everything listed. No snacking
o Do the diet for 12 days, then take a break for 2 days.

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
2 eggs prepared any way you choose
2 slices of bacon

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice
all the meat you want

grapefruit ( or 8oz of grapefruit juice)
salad with the dressing of your choice OR a red or green veggie prepared with butter/spices
any meat or fish
1 cup of coffee or tea

Bedtime Snack:

1 cup of skimmed milk or tomato juice

The grapefruit juice is suppose to be a catalyst that helps burn fat. Coffee hinders fat burning, so you're limited to that 1 cup per day. You can basically eat all the meat and fat you want. Exercise is generally encouraged as well.

There are some supplements on the market that leverage the grapefruit diet as part of their gimmick.

It is believed this diet started in the 1970s. It was so simple, it could be printed on a single sheet of paper and photocopied to share with others.

Many health professionals and organizations have stated they diet is not healthy. Though recent studies seem to have shown it really does work.

Sassy I wanted to ask you or anyone else who is on this diet. I notice before I started this diet I was retaining alot of water, especially in my legs and and feet. If anyone has had this problem, since starting the diet does it help with releasing the excess water once you start losing the weight? if not does anyone know of anything over the counter that is really good to release water retention.

I just wanted to thank you all for the words of encourage and success you all have experienced on this journey and diet. (did I really say the "D"word out loud?)Anyways...I was hoping that someone who has had success on this diet can answer a few questions for me. I have read several variation of this diet and what you can and can't have.
1.Can you have celery or not?
2.Is it regular bacon or turkey bacon?
3.Any type of dressing on a salad, or reduce fat/fat free?
4.Is fruit allowed?
5.One would think that with as much as you are told to eat, exercize is not required?
6.What are you suppose to eat on the 2 days off?
7.Any meat is allowed, or low in fat meat?
Thank you everyone in advance for your response. Any information would be a great help..

158.6..couldn't help it...I woke up a 4 am and did a 30 min Billy Blank express workout. That man is too energetic for me. I have been doing this diet on and off for years and I have to come find that, when you put in 100% thats what you get back! Anything less, is what you will get in return.

Tracey to answer your questions:
1.Yes, I believe it's allowed, I can't see why not, its green and green veggies are allowed (other than peas i think)
2.I dont eat pork or beef, so turkey bacon works best for me. Plus, it's healthier than pork bacon
3.The scope of the diet is high protein (some fat)/low carb so you can have full fat dressing, however as you continue on the diet and learn healthier eating habits, you will probably gear towards just eating low-fat dressing naturally.
4.No fruit other than grapefruit--unless you eat it on your two free days which is what I like to do.
5. In my opinion, exercise is required with anything diet program you do. It makes you feel good!
6.Your two free days are like cheat days, but if you are anything like me you wont overdo it, becuase you are more likely to pick up some of those hard earned lbs you lost during the initial 12 days. But's it's good to indulge at least one of the two free days so its less likely for you to fall off the wagon during your 12 day cycle.
7. I believe all meat is allowed, but once again this is a diet which should lead into a lifestyle I think you should stick to grilled and baked chicken breast, turkey, fish and if you have beef or pork make sure its LEAN cuts.

Hey everyone!
Congrats to all of you who are doing awesome! I just started this diet yesterday and so far so good. I also now work out 6 days a week. I do have a couple of questions and I'm sorry if these were already asked!
First thing I was wondering if we're allowed to use ketchup? The second thing I'm wondering is are we allowed to use the non-fat salad dressings? I know in the version I have it actually says not to eat the low/no fat dressings. Last question is can I use vinegar? I like to put that on my cucumbers.
Thanks everyone and good luck!

My SW on July 30th was 235.4 (I'm 5'2) - I'll post my weight in a few days.

Moni, I would stay away from the hot chocolate, even if it's sugar free. I'm assuming based on the things that are allowed is that this diet is restricting carbs - even without sugar, the hot chocolate probably has a lot of carbs...

Fab J -- perhaps because you're gaining muscle from exercise. That you're losing inches is a good sign. It's a good thing to workout so you don't lose your muscles with this diet -- we don't want that!

posted 5-Oct-2009 3:13pm

Hi. My husband and I just started this diet today in hopes of loosing about 15 pounds. I understand the diet fairly well, but I'm a little confused about one thing and was hoping that someone might be able to help me out. Everything I've read online about this diet suggest that you are only to consume 800 calories a day. I don't understand how this is possible if you are able to consume all the meats you want, cook with butter, eat full fat salad dressing and still eat/drink grapefruit 3x a day. My breakfast alone was 300 calories, and that was even with lower calorie turkey bacon. If I eat a salad for lunch with full fat dressing, and unlimited meat, plus the grapefruit juice, I'm already going to be well over the 800 calorie limit before I even make it to dinner!! So, I'm hoping that this was the 1930's version of the grapefruit diet, and today's diet consists of a more realistic daily calorie consumption, because 800 calories is certainly not realistic, nor is it healthy.
posted 6-Oct-2009 12:38pm

I'm back again! Ok, I'm not even going to question this diet, because it works. I started yesterday and I stuck to the plan, to the t, except I replaced my glass of milk with a glass of red wine. :) My calories were around 1700 for the whole day, maybe a little more. I didn't get a chance to work out. I woke up this morning and I literally lost 4 lbs. overnight! Hubby lost 3 lbs. I think grapefruit is a miracle for dieters!!! Will keep you posted on my progress....
posted 8-Oct-2009 12:53pm

I don't know if anyone is checking these posts anymore, but here's our progress in case anyone is interested in how this diet works...
Starting date: 10/05/09
Me: Starting weight: 152.5 Current weight: 148 Lost: 4.5
Hubby: Starting weight: 204.5 Current weight: 199 Lost: 5.5
I haven't stopped eating cheese, and eat almost all veggies (including tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, etc.), but no carrots or potatoes. We are basically following a very low-carb diet in addition to the grapefruit with all meals, and milk in the evening. Also, I tested my ketone levels, and I am in a mild state of ketosis even with the extra 70 plus carbs I'm getting from the juice, milk and veggies. I'm eating plenty of calories, lots of vegetables and lean protien, plus the nutritious grapefruit. This diet is very balanced and healthy if you do it right, regardless of what you read on the internet, and it seems to be working great!

Hi Dee,
For breakfast we have 2 eggs, 2 slices turkey bacon, & 8 oz. grapefruit juice. For lunch we'll have a salad with meat, and any kind of dressing & 8 oz. grapefruit juice, and for dinner we usually have chicken breast with green beans, or tri-tip and salad, or meatloaf with squash, along with 8 oz. grapefruit juice. Last night I had lamb chops and mixed veggies. I've also been adding soup to my lunches and dinners if I feel the need, but I don't snack at all between meals. If you get enough protein to eat during your meals you won't feel the need to snack. Also, I belive the grapefruit juice is a natural appetite suppressant, because I just don't get hungry on this diet. Of course, give it a couple of days to kick in, because at first, any diet is going to be a challenge. Good luck to you!

Total lost in 11 days is 7 lbs each. I know it's not a huge number, but I'm very happy with it. I never gave up alcohol, coffee, cheese, and probably a few other things that I can't think of off hand. We cheated one meal, last Sunday, and had Pad Thai and a chocolate all in all, I think we did pretty good, and I hope to see continued weight loss after the 2 day break. I'm definitely NOT going to over-do it this weekend though because that one cheat cost me 2 lbs that took several days to get back off....

came across this site by accident but so happy I did. I started this diet with a friend 14 days ago. she lost 1 pounds and I lost almost 19 pounds in 12 days. we watch the biggest loser together and it motivates us soo much that we put some money together an boughta treadmill, excercise bike, weights and weight bench and two of those huge ball to do abs on, and we will copy every excercise we saw them do on the show, and it has worked great. we did the diet faithfully but with a little twist. we had two snacks beside the milk. for example. in between our breakfast and luch we has a bowl of cabbage soup with chicken, or fish or beef( just for variety)and between luch and dinner we did the same think. at nights we hadthe glass of milk and on some nights instead of milk we had 1 activia light yogart(reason we choose activa it has more probiotic which help with bowel movement and the more waste you pass the more weight you will lose, especially inthe stomach area)we are both RN and the Dr we worked for loves this diet but recomment eating five meals a day, and the biggest loser show recommends it too so we figure if it works for them it should work for us too and it did. Plus you dont get bored with the diet because of the variety of the soup and everything in the soup is the vegetables on the approved list for this diet and lots of meat, this is a very low to no carb soup. try it guys at least for 1 week and let us know if it worked for you too. sassy and confused you gus rock, keep it up great job.

HopeRenee it took me 3 months for 53 lbs. And the remainder after a month of recovery from my surgery that also added 13 lbs on me. I lost within a month the remainder so now in total I've lost 66 lbs. I cheated maybe one meal one day of the week. Only one meal with desert and a reg soda. But you have to exercise every day during the week. You can take weekends off and not exercise. But if your going to cheat, do it once on one day and thats it.

Barni, I am feeling better and thanks for inquiring. :)

Ogarro my friend.. How are you? I hope your doing well. Congrats on the weight loss. I went to the mall and I was ecstatic to see that I can fit into a size 8 jeans! :) Well keep it up and you will be right there with me. Grabbing all the nice clothes and seeing how nice you look in them. :)

also as for the bacon and eggs, try mixing it up a bit. make them as omlette, scrambled, etc. We even got a little creative and add a little vegetable from the approve list and a tiny bit of cheese. It still worked great for us, as I posted above I lost 19 pounds my first 12 days and we are starting over on Monday. We took a little more than the 2 days required off. butstill did not gain anything back as a matter of speaking we lost an additional 2 pounds each. We just continuedthe diet in a moderate way on our days off and had a lttle brown rice, whole grain bread, and wild rice, andwe still lost 2 more pounds. Ths is the best diet we've ever been on. our goal now is about 3-5 pounds a week, we will both love to be at our goal weight by 04/2010. So, we're still eating together, we're just making healthier choices. I haven't posted my statistics in a while, so here they are....keep in mind, I gained 3 pounds when I had my two days off (water weight I'm sure b/c I really didn't overdo it), and another 2 pounds two different times when we cheated at dinner, so I'm losing it slowly, but still losing nevertheless and I'm happy about that. It's been proven that the faster it comes off, the faster it goes back on, so I'm trying to watch how much I lose, and how fast...
Starting Date: 10/5/09
My starting weight: 152.5
Hubby's starting weight: 204.5
Today's Date: 10/28/09
My weight: 145.5 (my lowest on this diet has been 144.5)
Hubby's weight: 197.5
My Goal: 135
Hubby's Goal: 185
Almost there!!

Hi guys, can anyone tell me what is the significance of drinking the milk or tom juice at bedtime? Does it aid with the weight loss or is it just something you can have that is optional?
This is my third day, start weight 133lb 2/11/09, currently 129lb 4/11/09, am loving this diet as I had reached a plateau.

Hello all! I am so excited about this diet. November 2nd I quit drinking alcohol for the time being. Now that my head is all cleared out, I suddenly started thinking about my health, and started googling different ways to lose weight, and came across this diet. I went to the store and got my bacon, eggs, coffee & tea, salad stuff, grapefruit, etc etc. I am starting tomorrow november 6th, and if I can get of the liquor and wine cold turkey, I can drop the carbs and other bad eating habits cold turkey!!! Please wish me luck as I will wish all of you. I am not really into the whole weighing myself thing. For me it's not about the numbers, but it's about the inches coming off, the smaller pants size, and the not getting out of breath from walking to the mail box! Last time I weighed myself was a few years ago and I was 190. I am pretty sure i weigh about 210 now. I was wearing size 14's now 16's are way too tight and I hate to give into the fact that I am a size 18. My goal is to fit into the 14's at the end of 12 or 24 days, and eventually be down to the pre-baby size of 10. If I make it to a size 10 in a few months then I've reached my goal. Over all I want to feel and look good. I hope to keep in touch with you all on this forum thruout our journeys to be healthier people who live longer lives!

Hey everyone! I started the diet but I admit I fell off! I started on a monday and by that saturday evening i was messing up. My boyfriend comes over every weekend and he took me out to eat for lunch on saturday. I did good by ordering grilled white fish on top of saute spinach and roasted peppers, no starches at all. Just the fish and veggies, I didnt order alcohol, but instead had an unsweet tea with lemon, but then later I screwed up because we got some vodka and cranberry juice..... 1 drink turned into 2...2 into 4!!! omg! I was so mad at myself and to top it all off I had pizza, yes pizza on sunday night!!!! Then the following weekend I had extremely cheesy macaroni and cheese, fried pork chops and vegetables. I'm half southern in georgia and you know we eat that hearty sunday dinner! (sigh) ok now it is tuesday, and I have stuck to it starting back yesterday, and I really wish I had a fellow email buddy or chat buddy or something to encourage me, because my southern food eating, beer drinking boyfriend is absolutely no help, and he is a soldier in perfect shape so he is in no way concerned about my weight being a southern guy who likes thick girls. Well I want to lose weight! I need help!!!!!!!

Hey everyone. I have tried everything to lose weight and I cant do it. I am going to try this diet and see if it works. If it dont work I am going to a doctor for help. I am 5'7 200lbs and my goal Is 125lbs.

I started the diet a few weeks ago, and i admit i cheated on the weekend. Also the diet says that you can eat any salad dressing you want, but I would have to beg to differ, because the dressing that I was using, 2 different balsamic vinagarettes had sugar in the ingredients and about 11 grams of carbs. So what I did was emptied one of the bottles and I made my own salad dressing with 3 parts olive oil, 1 part vinegar, a dash of salt and pepper, lemon juice, and chopped garlic cloves. its homeade, still has the good fat (olive oil) and some flavor with the lemon and garlic, only difference is no sugar or carbs which can hinder the weight loss process. I have restarted my diet monday nov 16. I think I was using way too much butter in the beginning and too much oil for cooking meat. Now I will only use 1 TBS of butter for cooking eggs, less or no salt (salt retains water and can hinder some weight loss) will try baking my meats more than pan frying, etc. I hope with these suttle changes and discipline, I will see results in the next 9 days. I will let you all know, and wish you all luck.

One more thing..... I know you can eat eggs any style, and they incourage you to use butter when eating eggs, because of the low calorie count etc but I don't think It will hurt to try eating more boiled eggs instead of that fried in butter. i could be wrong so don't take it to heart. Butter IS considered a GOOD fat in moderation, and has zero carbs. But I am just trying to not clog my arteries anymore than what they probably are, nor am I trying to pick up some heart disease, due to the high fat. Just a thought and only sharing based on what I think, but one thing is for sure I will try my best to follow this for the whole 12 days, and look forward to seeing what the end result is. I'm hoping this will get me back to how I use to be over 10 years ago....healthy, in good shape, and never tired!

Hi Folks,

I'm new to all of this! This is my first diet but I often go through little fads. I am 5'6 and think I weight approx 154lbs. I just want to lose about 14lbs so that I am a healthier weight for my height (I looked at a chart!). Me and my partner are on day 2, I thought we had been following it to the letter but after reading what others have written here I may need to tweak the instructions I have. It seems that you can only have meat with the salad at lunch but I had prawns today and yesterday. Also I keep getting mixed messages about the amount of coffee that should be drunk, is it the more the better or keep to a total minimum? Also today for dinner I have oven baked chicken breast with carrots, brockeley and cauliflower with a cheese sauce... I was unsure if this was allowed... it seems from what other people have done that cheese, cauliflower and carrots are out of the question; Can anyone clarify this? One last thing, can you eat onions? I have managed to drink 2 litres of water per day which is a big effort on my part! I haven't weighed myself yet but already feel brighter and slightly lighter... I have a bit more energy and my skin looks amazing! I intead on starting some sort of exercise in the next few days. Wish me look! X

From what I read cheese is not allowd. I never saw cauliflower or carrots on the approved list of foods to eat, and to be honest, I wouldn't even eat them anyway. The more green veggies the better. You can not have white onions, but you can have red onions. I have seen too many conflicting reviews about how much coffee to drink. I have decided to limit myself to 1 cup of coffee in the morning, and green tea with lunch and dinner. There are some sites that say to limit yourself to 1 cup of coffee per day and other sites say limit 1 cup per meal, but even more sites are saying that too much coffee can interfere with the weight loss due to the increase in insulin. I just would not eat cheese at all if I were you. It is not listed as approved food and is fattening. I know its hard but hang in there. I didn't think I could go without carbs but it's getting easier and easier each day. If you drink plenty of water and eat whats required you will feel full! Last night I was dying to eat some pepperonis before bed, and I fought the craving and drank tomatoe juice instead and a cup of water. It helped me alot. Good luck

Works like a charm! My boot camp trainer recommended it to me when I hit a plateau- even with just a half of a grape fruit 3 times a day, ideally before your meal (which of course should be small portions 3 - 4 times throughout the day; however I have to admit that having tried numerous of diets out there, no one diet will drop/eliminate the weight; it works best when combined with a solid, fat-losing, body-toning workout formula. And my fitness boot camp is totally that and kicks serious butt! I go to their Yonge/Finch, Toronto location. Mention my name and get $100 off! Good Luck!

can i have green beans as a veggie
posted 3-Dec-2009 6:40pm

Dreamer, as far as I know it's suppose to be bacon everyday for breakfast. You need some of the "good fat" in this diet because it is so low in calories. I have read that green beans are ok. I eat mainly spinach, brocolli, green beans, asparagus, and I use alot of red and green peppers to sautee with my meats for more flavor. I also tried baking tilapia with sliced green peppers, red peppers and red onion. it was pretty good, and had a big salad with it. also I am not sure if you are suppose to eat dark meat chicken or not. I buy dark and white chicken. The websites have said any meat any style, but I would try to stay away from any breaded and deep fried meat, and alysesm i added you :) I must say that you really have to stick to the diet because if you go off it too soon u will put back on some weight. I was doing good at first but because of the holidays having soo many temptations, i have been cheating way too much and it is starting to show. I really need to discipline myself. I really want to lose weight
