Criticism

Giving up bread and sweets may simply be too hard for some people. Sugar is in a great majority of products sold today. While the diet sounds simple, implementing it and sticking to it is quiet a challenge.

Yep, that's it. It is so good. With a cup of coffee...it is beyond good. I reminds me of a pecan pie without the pecans. It is rich...like sugar in one of it's purest forms. But the butter and vanilla make it extremely tasty.

So much for staying home today. I found out we were almost out of dry cat food, so off I went running errands. Made to the pharmacy for sinus meds, now I have med head. I was moving some boxes and almost wiped out. I caught myself on the door jamb, but bruised up my arm pretty good. The med always makes me shaky and light headed. Anyone else have that problem? I'm going to make myself take them for 24 hours, then see how I feel. Time for some hot tea!

As per Hilda's idea to try and make things more suitable for Thanksgiving, I found this and thought it looked good.

No-Sugar Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake
(8 servings, recipe from Laura, who found the original version on AllRecipes, with adaptations by Kalyn)

2 packages (8 oz. each) light cream cheese (not fat free)
1/2 cup Splenda
1/2 tsp. Vanilla extract (I used a bit more)
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling which contains sugar)
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. apple pie spice (recipe called for pinch each of nutmeg and cloves, but I didn't have any cloves)
non-stick spray for baking dish (use very sparingly or it makes it hard to spread the cheesecake)
whipped cream (optional, I didn't think it needed it)

Preheat oven to 325 F. In large bowl combine softened cream cheese, Splenda, and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer until smooth. Blend in eggs, one at a time. Remove one cup of batter and spread into bottom of glass or crockery baking dish which has been sprayed very lightly with non-stick spray. (I sprayed my dish too much and had a hard time getting the first layer spread evenly. Next time I would put a very thin layer of chopped pecans over the nonstick spray.)

Add pumpkin and spices to remaining batter and stir until blended. Carefully spread pumpkin layer over first layer. Bake in preheated oven 35-45 minutes, or until center is almost set. Allow to cool, then chill several hours or overnight. Serve with whipped cream if desired and wait for compliments.

I used a 10" by 8" glass baking dish to cook this. Next time I think I would double the recipe and only increase to a 9" by 13" baking dish to make a thicker cheese cake. This would show of the layers better. Some cinnamon dusted on the top would have been a nice touch.

154.2 this morning. I've been drinking Airborn and juice. I nibble a lot. I've always been an "eater" when I felt under the weather...still am.

Pouring rain here today. Time for some soup for sure. A quick trip to the store, then I'm in for the day. Debbie, how about setting up a jigsaw puzzle to sit down to when you get too bored? Anything that keeps you out of the kitchen and occupied might get you through. I've been on line looking for a round card table and they are pricey. We used to have a great one, but it got left somewhere never to be seen again.

Last night I had a dream about pie. For crying out loud!!!!

Took my medicine. Yuck. Decongestants make me so shaky, but they work.

I went out shopping and found lots of good deals for Christmas. Wrapping paper, tape, candy canes. I found sugar free candy canes made with splenda! Walgreens has a lot of fun Christmas stuff. My husband works for Walgreens so we get an additional 15% off sale prices. I couldn't resist. I know its early but I was in a shopping kind of mood.

I'm even looking forward to dragging all the Christmas decorations out this year. I suppose I should get all the leaves raked up first and yank out the last tomato plant that just withered away from the frost. Then I will concentrate on Thanksgiving. I wasn't in the mood for Christmas last year. I just went through the motions. I don't know if it had anything to do with the brain tumor they found in early January or not but I just wasn't myself. This year I am really looking forward to getting started.

My Lovebird Rainbow layed another egg. Poor thing dosn't know it will never hatch. She sits on it in vain. That makes two so far this time. She has had up to 4 or 5 in a clutch. I would get a male love bird for her but the pet shops never know if the ones they have are male or female. You would think some one could tell some how some way other than a costly blood test. I read that its better off just to have one lovebird anyway. One just usually ends up picking on the other, contrary to popular belief.

I bought the pured pumpkin but I forgot the cream cheese, rats. I was gonna make a go of the pumpkin cheese cake to see ahead of time how it turns out. I would rather know before I take it to Mom's for thanksgiving.

I am going to dig out my puzzles today Connie. I have a lovely table it can go on in the familyroom. I also got out the afgahan I started working on last winter. I have about 6 rows done. Its my first one. That will be a great thing to keep my hands busy too.

Catch ya all later, The kids will start coming home soon and I need to get a snack ready and start supper.

Sugar free Spiced Pumpkin Custard Pie

Served warm with a dollop of whipped cream, this cinnamon and ginger-flecked, creamy custard pie is an anytime favorite. It can also be an excellent addition to a holiday table, and a great dessert to cart along to a family member’s house so you can avoid the full-sugar pumpkin pie that is sure to be there.

1box (15 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crusts (I use these and no one suspects my crust is not home-made, in fact the pie in this photo is a Pillsbury crust)
¾ cup Splenda Granular
¼ teaspoon table salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
3 large eggs
One 15-ounce cans Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
One 12-ounce can low-fat evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed milk)
Whipped cream sweetened with Splenda or Reddi-wip

Preheat oven to 325° F. Line two regular pie plates with the crusts as directed on box.

Mix the Splenda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves in a small bowl. Beat the eggs in a large bowl and blend in the pumpkin and spice mixture.

Gradually blend in the evaporated milk.

Divide the pumpkin custard filling between the two pie plates. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the filling is set around the edges and the center is still a bit soft. Transfer to a rack to cool, then chill. Serve with a dollop of Splenda sweetened whipped cream or a squirt of Reddi-wip before serving if desired.

Makes two pies, each serving 8

I am trying a sugar free raspberry jello and whole berry cranberry saucerecipe today with a chopped apple, mandarin oranges and walnuts. The oranges in the grocery store had no color so I used Mandarin instead. It was in Family Circle. Yesterday's Oprah is worth checking out. I have no respect for her anymore, but Dr. Oz was on and he had quite a few health hints. One of the foods he said we should eat was garlic. Since I'm not eating bread much, I was wondering what you guys use garlic in.

The cranberry sauce tastes delicious, but I think I used too much water. I would make it with 1 small pkg sugar free raspberry jello, 1 and 1/4 cups of boiling water, 1 can of whole berry cranberry sauce. Dissolve jello and cranberry sauce, add 1 can drained mandarin oranges( I cut each orange in half) one chopped apple, and 1/2 cup or more walnuts. Chill until set. The recipe said make jello as directed, but it did not set up. Other recipes just said 1 and 1/4 c. boiling water. There is some sugar in the whole berry cranberry sauce, but this is for Thanksgiving.

155.6 this morning. Egads...I'm gaining weight! Too much of a good thing yesterday for sure. Maybe some corn chips with flour in them as well. Back on track today. I keep feeding my cold! Last night I remembered my sinus irrigation contraption from my sinus surgery. I got it out and used it. It's one of those "hurts so good" moments in life. I'll add it to my daily arsenal.

I like hummus, but my husband does not, so I very rarely buy any.

70 here today. Temps are all over the place. Cooling off again in a couple of days. Had to get my summer bedding back out. But very wet outside. The dogs are tracking in some beautiful leaves. And some ugly mud. I'm going to wear out the swiffer wet jet!

Y'all have a great day!

Debbie my favourite way to eat hummus is in a wrap with chopped tomato, avocado, some spinach and maybe a little grated cheese......it is one of my kids favourite sandwiches. There is a sprouted wrap but I found it has a little flour as well in it.

I had a really stressful day yesterday and I am not doing as well with NFNS as I would like.....just didn't want to think about dinner and what to make. The problem is my stress level will likely be high for sometime now so I have to figure out a way to deal with it and also focusing on eating well.

Bronwyn, Do you exercise at all? I don't remember how old you are or if you have any health issues but I think 20 minutes a day would benifit you and help you with your stress. Some of us have more stress than others but everyone is going to have stress, more at some times than others. You need to find a way to deal with your stress. You need to find a time of day, most days to put yourself first and take a walk or something. Do you think you could start out small and maybe do 5 or 10 minutes a day?
I know I feel so much better when I get in some sort of activity in the day and it helps with my determination to stay on track and take better care of myself in all areas of my life.

I just had a terrible surprise. I got a glimps of the tag on my new jeans and discovered that they are not size 16 P as I had thought. They are 18 short. I can't believe it. I thought I had dropped a size. I bought two pairs of jeans that day so I checked the other pairs size. They are 16 and much snugger. i hadn't worn the second pair yet so I didn't realize what I had done. I tried them on and they are snugger but still fit. The first pair were getting annoyingly baggy so if I lose some more weight they will be unwearable soon. At least they are big.

How great they are...you are doing this for you and you've got this site hoppin! What a great job. Sounds like Connie and Debbie, Hilda and the others are all helping each other. Just what I need. I'd like to introduce myself and be supported and give support if you'd like a new friend. My name is Cheryl from Niles, Michigan. I am 50 married to my high school sweetheart for 30 years. We have a daughter who is 30 and our son is 27 and between them I have 6 gbabies and one on the way. I have been on every diet, pill and came up short for the past 20 years. I was going to go as far as the lap band surgery. My husband doesn't want me to do that, feels it's too drastic. So a friend told me about the NFNS and how it's worked for her so I'm hoping NFNS is something I can do to change my life. Whew!

I am sure you can lose weight on this diet. It is the most sensible diet I have even been on. It is pretty close to the South Beach diet but more strickt on carbs. Have you done that one?

I understand your interest in the lap band and I can also understand your husbands fear of it. My husband had gastric bypass 4.5 years ago. Thankfully everything worked out good for him. He had the RNY.

Read all the post as you get a chance. Because there is some good information and great ideas and recipes up there. I started on here early Sept. and come on everyday that I am in town.

But I think I would try this good and long first. I know sometimes people gain the weight back. Yes, I always think of Bronwyn as our fearless leader. She has all our hearts. And, we all have each others support! So good luck to you, read a lot and stay tough.

Hilda, that depends on what kind you like and what is available in your area. In my very unprofessional experience, I have found that cabernet's are strong and unsweet. Shiraz' and merlot's are somewhat spicey. Your best bet is to go the a liquor store and talk with the sales person. Or, maybe you could google some facts about wines. Tell me again where you live.

155 on the nose this morning. I feel so off with my eating. Today I am going to menu plan and grocery shop. Yesterday's homemade chicken soup was ok, it has thyme in it and although I halved the amount of thyme called for, it still tastes too strong for me. But I'll eat it. It's full of other good things.
Nice and nippy this morning. An overcast day. My kind of weather!

My friend has asked me to make a birthday cake but she is on a no sugar no diet for 1 year. Does anyone have a recipe.
Connie
posted 15-Nov-2008 7:19pm

Good luck with that! I spent a huge part of the day on line looking for NFNS desserts. Not much out there for cakes without flour. In fact, I only found one...and it had semisweet chocolate, so there was sugar. Then I tried going for a cobbler type dish, but could not find a topping without flour. So, I remembered my no bake cookie recipe, and thought I could substitute the sugar with Splenda and the regular pb with my ns pb. OMG! What a disaster! I read the box of Splenda and it said it could be used for cooking and baking. But, the cookies didn't set up and they tasted terrible. I did eat some though, with a generous helping of ns cool whip. Which, by the way, has corn syrup in it. It claims the amount is insignificant. Maybe that's true for an occasional treat. I am still going to try again tomorrow. There has to be desserts we can have, I just haven't found what I want yet.

Maybe your friend would let you make something besides cake. Or, if she will go for a "low carb/light on the flour" cake, you might have an easier time finding something. It seems like there was a site you could buy ready made NFNS cake on line when I googled.
Hilda
posted 15-Nov-2008 9:29pm

I'm confused as to why this person wants a birthday cake. I can see having a dessert like sugar free chocolate pudding, or two flavors layered in a pretty crystal dessert dish. Is the cake for her or her guests?
Bronwyn
posted 16-Nov-2008 2:14am

Just a question.....anonymous only said no sugar.....she didn't say no flour and I wonder it she was looking just for no sugar. No sugar cake would be very easy to make with splenda,,,,,NFNS would be much more difficult.
Connie
posted 16-Nov-2008 9:28am

155 this morning. I thought it would be more, we snacked all day yesterday. Today I am going to drink more water and limit my eating. If I would just follow a "planned eating" day, it would be an improvement. Jerry is going to be in town all week, so I will be cooking more and snacking less. Since I was unable to find a dessert I liked yesterday, I'm going to just give it up. I bought some desserts, mixes in a box, for family and I'll make them, but I will not eat them. So, for Thanksgiving I'll make the desserts, but stay away from them. The real culprit for me will be the flour and I don't think that will be as hard on my system as the sugar. Last night for a little treat I had a hot cup of mandarin orange green tea, decaf, with Splenda and half and half. It hit the spot. That is going to be my dessert for the winter months.

How is everyone doing? The weekends are so busy, I know it's hard to post.

Anonymous, there are several recipes on line for a chocolate cake made with chick peas instead of flour. One had semisweet chocolate, one had cocoa. The one with cocoa (me-ander.blogspot.com) uses sugar. You could substitute the sugar with Splenda and maybe have better results "baking" than I had "boiling."

Today is the day I eat smarter than I have in a while! I've got it all planned out.

We are doing some home make overs and helping to bring some Christmas decor and presents into their homes. My "family" is from Sudan.......my word we are so fortunate to live in such a wonderful country (Canada or USA).....we have so much and I am not only talking about material goods but freedoms, rights and the understanding of and respect for life......women in some cultures are treated so poorly. I am so grateful for where I live and for the opportunities that are mine because of that.....now I need to take better care of myself so I can be more productive and do more with all these great opportunites to help others. Chocolate zaps my energy.....I don't know why I am so drawn to it.

I mean, there are things to worry about and then, there are things to worry about.

It is very kind what you are doing for the Sudan family. Your holiday season will be richer for it. I wish you could keep a happy heart when you slide on NFNS. Morning. 154.6 this morning. I was checking my chart and I noticed I really was up and down last week. Not cooking and only snacking didn't work out so well for me! Yesterday I fixed a nice Sunday dinner around 2. It kept me full the rest of the day. Then, my cup of tea during the evening. Much better.

Hilda, that is a good point you make about wine and addiction. I remember seeing a weight loss show once and one of the guests said she has a glass or two of wine every evening when she gets home from work. She said it curbs her appetite and then she never overeats. Well, the health experts on the panel were all very worried about that. And they told her it was a terrible idea and dangerous. I don't know if addiction runs in your family or not. You seem too level headed to let it become a problem. For me, I can't drink more than once in awhile.

Hi Andrea. Wow...losing 50 lbs every couple of years is something! I think NFNS could be the plan to help you keep it off. I always cringe a little when I hear people say this plan sounds restrictive. I really don't think it is. Compared to other plans I've tried that is. There are things you can't eat, but I never count calories or points. When I'm hungry, I eat. I seldom overeat. I think this plan is easy. Ever since I gave up F&S, my stomach has been half it's size. I truly believe F&S made me feel lethargic, bloated and craving all the time. What else could explain being full from overeating and still wanting to eat more. It did not make sense, but that was what I was doing. The more F&S I ate, the more I wanted more.

I hope you can give this a good long trial run. It is an amazing eating plan. This, along with your exercising should give you great results. I need to exercise. One day!

How ya doing Debbie M?

I have found little temptation in things that I have eaten before and I know what they taste like. My goal is only to have a bite of things I have never tried, new recipes someone has made for that special day. Andrea, maybe you can encourage the other people at the gym to do this with you. I think we need people in our lives who will support us at work and at home, and when we are out socializing. I am going it alone, and I wish my family members who are overweight would join me. I keep thinking when I get to my goal, they will wish they had!

The No Flour No Sugar Potluck at my house was a success. Everyone had to bring something from the NSNF cookbook. If you did not cook, you provided the coffee, water, utensils, and cleanup. Since it was one of my friend's birthday I made the Banana Bread recipe in a 8 inch round pan. For the frosting I used fat free chocolate pudding. Topping I garnished with fresh strawberries in a concentric circle and a flower in the middle.

It looked like a cake!

Also we had a dessert buffet at our potluck.

Have a No Flour No Sugar potluck with friends who are on the diet. For Thanksgiving I am cooking alot of dishes with NO Flour No Sugar recipesl.

Let's make it a rule that WE WILL NOT DREAD THANKSGIVING!!!!!(Good idea Hilda) Nothing good can come from negative feelings. No matter what your approach to the holiday food...go with it, come what may. I for one am going to eat like a starving person. And that will last for at least three days. Thanksgiving left over are my absolute favorite and I will eat them 3 times a day until they are all gone. I can't wait! I love dressing with mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce, all in one bit. It is the bomb!!!!! I can pass on the sweets, but flour will be running through my blood from the dressing. What is the worst that can happen? Maybe gain a lb or two. No biggie. It will come right back off when I get back on NFNS.

There isn't anyone here on NFNS for me to buddy up with. That's why I am constantly on this site. You all are my dieting buddies. Cammie, a trip to the store to stock up on NFNS foods is paramount to this eating plan. It is so easy to slip when we are not prepared. Today I am making the butternut casserole just to have around.

Time to get my Thanksgiving menu and grocery list together.
Have a great NFNS day.

Wow-What a white snowy morning. Thanks for the welcome and appreciate the support. Debbie M. it's good to know you are just down the street from me. We might have to meet up during the holidays to give each other face to face support. I am still reading the NFNS book, since I just got it on Friday and this weekend was crazy with the house. We moved into a new house a couple of months ago thinking our other house wouldn't sell for 6-12 months. It sold in three weeks, so we bought and moved into this new house across town and we've been trying to get it to feel like home ever since.

I would like to lose 60 pounds...I'm hoping with the NFNS plan I can get 'er done. What is realistic?

Have a great afternoon,

193 this am. I did a really stupid thing. I had a huge craving. My husband brought home a box of honey grahm crackers. I knew the second I saw them I would have to eat some. I eat a whole sleeve with a glass of milk. It wasn't too long after that I got really sleepy and fell asleep on the couch. Now I wish I hadn't had them. Naughty me. I guess the sleepiness was from the low blood sugar drop. I haven't felt like that in a long long time.

Steve and I watched a cooking show on TV. This guy had an interesting way of promising the moistest bird on the planet. Even moist left overs. We are going to try his recipe for Romancing the Bird. Has anyone else seen this show? Tell me your secrets to a perfect Turkey.

Cheryl, We of course have snow too since we live in the same area. It is pretty but I still have leaves on the ground in my back yard. As a matter of fact we still have some green leaves on the Maple tree back there.

Ok, so you ate them. I'll bet if you hadn't fell asleep you would have had a stomach ache! I ate sugar without knowing one day...it left me craving like crazy. But I just went back to NFNS and rocked right on. You know, things like that are going to happen...and it's ok. When I chose to eat f or s, I am not going to feel bad about it. We should be having enough NFNS days to get away with some indulgences.

I've managed to eat good today. I am really enjoying my hot tea treat as well. If your wanting something sweet at the end of the day, I highly recommend it.

Thanks, I am back on NFNS today. I'm really ready for the scale to start dropping again like it did in the beginning. I am not going to get frustrated though. I know the holidays will be more challenging and it might just be a time of maintenance. Thats ok. How many times does a holiday go by that I didn't gain weight in the past? I am ready and know that back slides will happen and I am sorry they did. So I'll just keep trying.
Good day everyone

Hey Gang-Debbie you are human and it happens to everyone. The next time ask hubby to keep the graham crackers in his "cupboard" so you don't see them. You'll know how they made you feel and next time you'll say no thanks. B-you've got a good handle of how to approach this NFNS plan without beating yourself up.

The sun is finally shining,

Have a great day,

hmmmm......i don't know if anonymous is one person or various people? You have to type your name in or it just comes up anonymous.

It really sounds like everyone is more gearing towards maintenance for the holidays. That isn't a bad strategy if you can do that and not go "hog wild" smile

I wonder what is the difference for me from when I found it so easy to be 100% committed to now when I find I can so easily take a break..........taking lots of breaks just doesn't translate into weight loss. Anyways, that is great Debbie M. that you got right back on the program. You must wonder as I also wonder when i eat "the whole thing" why you had to eat the whole sleeve of graham crackers......why not just 1 or 2 crackers.

Where is Connie? I find this time of year .....BLAH!!!!!

I am anonymous!!! At least the latest one. Every so often it erases my name...oh well, I'm still here.

I have ate very well the last two days. Not snacking, balanced meals. I'll bet we are all going to be surprised what a "non eating event" Thanksgiving turns out to be for us! Even though we slip and slide, I just don't think we can eat the way we used to. I am going to give it my best, but I have changed. You can't imagine the damage I used to do with ice cream and chocolate syrup. We still keep it in the house because of family, but I haven't touched it since I began this program. And yeast rolls. I haven't had one even though I bake them. There are so many things like that. I just don't have the same appetite. And then there's the part of "tasting" all the food before eating. I will probably be full by the time I sit down.
It will be interesting to read everyone's comments the Fri after!

We had sun today, but cold. I like rain and sun and cold. Pretty much everything but hot. Bronwyn, I'm assuming your referring to the weather being "BLAH." Is it just snow, and more snow? I remember in MI it seemed to stay pretty until Christmas, and then everything turned black/gray from exhaust. It could be really ugly. And depressing. One of my sisters lives in Northern Mi and it seemed to go from fallish to lot's of snow. Just like that.

Here's a girlie thing to say...today, for the first time in 3 years, my hair was long enough to put in a pony tail!!! This is great news for me. Of course, it is a stub of a pony tail, but for the most part, it stayed within the band. Ahhhhh...to be able to band it and go. I've been growing my bangs out FOREVER and keeping the rest short while doing it. And finally it's paying off. I wont go into the whole curly hair nightmare again, just know this one simple thing will have a huge beneficial effect on me.

All you fine ladies have a great evening. I will, curled up with my book, 3 out of 4 cats and a dog.

Debbie M. I am sorry you are having a bad day ..... actually it is late enough that it is now a new day~I am sure that today will be better. Listen for me the psychological damage that ensues from failure on a diet is what I hate. Is there some way to get around the feeling of failure because there will always be slip ups!!! I want to understand more fully why the graham crackers or the chocolate or whatever it is that seems to over power us can have so much power. Why don't we have one cracker.....one bite of chocolate and walk away. I know the crackers are out of the house....gone and same here the chocolate is gone.....nothing at all here~ BUT there will be another time when there is chocolate or graham crackers available. I don't want food items ruling my life and having the power over me to determine whether I am happy, sad, or out of control. I think I better go to bed as I think this may not be making any sense,,,,,it is a big question in my head but it isn't making sense here. I will try to explain again tomorrow.

Debbie, I can't tell you how many times I have thrown out food! When I started this I gave a ton to my neighbor who has 5 kids. A ton! I guess your kids are too small to give it to and trust they would be able to successfully hide it from you and not eat it all at one time. I remember my "Fit or Fat" days, in one of the books he says our bodies are not disposable garbage machines. Just throw it out. That concept had a huge impact on me. Some foods are just not a value even though we spent money on them. Next, talk to your husband.
Mine used to bring me wonderful dark chocolates from his travels. Not anymore.

Julia, I saw a lot of recipes on line for oatmeal cookies. I will not make them. Hilda, that was a great idea for a substitute. I would rather have that than a cookie.

I'm up at 2 am because I had a bad dream. I hate that. But I'm ready to sleep again. So, until morning, night all.

153.8 this morning. I had typed a bunch on here and it just disappeared! So, I guess I'll start over and do it again.

I am very happy to be back in the 153 area. I have been eating very well and it seems last weeks snackfest had me gaining instead of losing. Here's what I think...I'm going to eat rice cakes instead of corn chips. I am going to eat cereal as a dinner on nights when I don't have to cook. I'm going to stay away from high fat foods. For the first time in FOREVER I have stayed away from nacho's. I didn't know I could do that, I used to eat them almost everyday. Cashews are for meal replacement and emergencies. I am going to eat rice more than potatoes. I feel like I lose eating like this. And I don't feel deprived eating like this. I feel smart and healthier.

By my calculations, adjusted for the new scale, I have lost 34.2 lb so far. And I am going to keep on losing. Size 10...here I come!

Hi muggins...welcome.

Bronwyn, I know what you mean about the dark hours. It always takes me awhile to adjust to the winter hours. But, then I start thinking of it as the "cuddle" hours. You know, cuddle up with a good book, a good TV show, a good pet. It becomes the ultimate down time for me, and I am all about down time! Rest is so important. My Rx for you is a good funny book. Laughter is the best medicine and it can change your whole disposition.

I'm off to work today. Just a half day. I'll check in later.
Best to all.

Connie, CONGRATULATIONS! 34.2lbs is amazing! I am new to this blog but I read all of the previous posts and posts like yours are inspiring! Do you weigh yourself every day or just once a week? I have been doing it once a week for the past 3 weeks.
Connie
posted 19-Nov-2008 10:49am

I weigh every day. Sometimes I miss. I also keep a chart. It's easier than scrolling back to see what my previous weight was. I can see if I'm headed in the wrong direction immediately and figure out why and make adjustments and keep on going. If I gain, I don't let it bother me to the point where I give up. I never give up. I will never give up.

I love this eating plan. For me, it is so easy. I was never a rice eater before. And I eat lot's of veggies I never ate before. I can make them taste good and be smart at the same time. When it came to a side dish, I always went with mac and cheese, cheesy potatoes, etc. But now I choose rice 9 times out of 10. I look at it like this, it's rice or nothing. So now, I love rice. And no snacking. This plan is all about the long run. I have tried other diets too. This one works because I can make it work. Nothing is magic. We get back what we put into it.

This particular year the long dark, cold nights have had a greater impact on me than previously. I know it is all the other stressful things I am dealing with right now that are getting to me more than the time of year. It just seems that stresses come in bundles and I am blessed with a bundle at the moment......you know "when it rains it pours". A good humorous book would probably be a great Rx,,,,,,I seem to tend toward more heavy reading and that is probably not at all what I need. Connie you are such an inspiration to people on here.......you are like the energizer bunny.....you just keep going. Not very many people on this board have had your weight loss success but when I listen to what you eat I also have to admit to eating way more than you do.....so yeah, I am not going to lose weight like you do, shootwink

I too enjoy a good movie. I take the same approach to films that I do to books. Only ones that make me feel better...please! This really is a departure from the "old me" and, I think, an improvement. I love, love, love a cute book or movie. With a book, I can read some every night before I go to bed. I guess I pick my books by their "escape" factor, but so be it. I think I'm a happier person because of it. We can all use to lighten up a bit.

Glad to have another NFNS day under my belt. I am glad I am able to inspire at times. Everyone's posts always inspire me. What would we do without each other? I once joined ww and went to two meetings. I sat silently the whole time. And no one engaged me. So, I ended up leaving the sessions feeling completely disjointed from the rest of the group. Here, I've just pushed my way into this site. Of course, I had more enthusiasm for this plan than ww. May I never add another point again! It just wasn't for me. But this is. And I'm not going away. I still wonder about others who have posted and then disappeared. I hope they are all doing well. I hope they found the group that they can respond to.

Time to enjoy some reading.

Hilda what are some movies you would suggest. I may have mentioned this one before but I really liked "Dan In Real Life".....very fun!!!!

Muggins there really are so many options for breakfast. I think one that is very satisfying is porridge.....I like Steel Cut Oats. You can cook the steel cut Oats in lots of different ways.....it is good cooked with some fruit in it....chopped apples and walnuts. That is also a nice way to get some fibre first thing in the day. I find that sticks with me longer than some other choices. Do a google search on NFNS breakfasts....there are lots of ideas.

Muggins I think this looks interesting....it may also solve the oatmeal cookie issue.....I don't know how splenda would work under the broiler but I may try it.........
OATMEAL BANANA BRULEE

This comes from Westin Hotels & Resorts, which has launched a SuperFoods-focused menu -- full of fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins known to improve well-being and longevity. The crunchy sugar topping isn't a full-scale brûlée -- there's not enough sugar -- but it's a nice touch.

1 l (4 cups) water

250 ml (1 cup) steel-cut oats

salt, to taste

15 ml (1 tbsp.) unsalted butter

2 bananas, cut into 1-cm (1/2-inch) pieces

75 ml (5 tbsp.) sugar in the raw

In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil over high heat. Add oats; stir well. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, uncovered and stirring occasionally, to desired doneness, 20 to 30 minutes. Season with salt. Let stand for 5 minutes.

In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add bananas and 15 ml (1 tbsp.) of the sugar. Cook, stirring gently, until golden, about 5 minutes.

Divide oatmeal among 4 bowls. Top each with equal portion bananas. Sprinkle 15 ml (1 tbsp.) sugar on each portion. Caramelize tops using crème brûlée torch. Or, if using ovenproof bowls, put under preheated broiler for 5 minutes.

NOTE: Bob's Red Mill has Steel Cut Oats.....and there are other brands as well!!!

Bronwyn, I'm so glad you brought up steel cut oats. I saw some at the grocery the other day. What is the difference between them and old fashioned oats?

Shake packets over a lean roast in a crock pot. Pour one cup water in the bottom and cook on low for 7 hours.

Hi Mish.....it is cold here as well.....brrr!!!! I honestly didn't have any trouble getting going the first time I did this and I did have some success....slow but I lost 10 lbs. in 2 months. I had a relapse and unfortunately found those 10 lbs. What I found worked for me the first time was cold turkey......for me cold turkey was totally quitting chocolate which is my serious problem. Now I find it is too easy to take days off.....not hard to get going really but, I find it more difficult to be strict and constant. Read Connie's posts as she did this program in a way that enabled her to lose a lot of weight and quickly. How much weight are you hoping to lose?

Andrea I think there are a few problems with the sushi rice....it is a very refined rice and high on the glycemic index plus then you have the sugar. Do you find you are hungry and craving sweets after you eat sushi.....that is a good indicator of whether it is a bad thing for you to eat or not. You may find you can eat it,,,,it sets me up for cravings.

Andrea: Some rice is higher on the glycemic index than others. Basmati rice and brown rice are lower GI options and have fewer adverse effects on blood glucose levels. Sushi rice is a white and quite highly refined rice. I think Dr. Gott suggests using brown rice. Actually I can buy brown rice sushi and it is really good but I am sure there is some sugar in the rice. My favorite rice is brown basmati.

Hello ladies...newbies included! I am so glad to be home at last. What a long day. I finally made it to the clinic and am starting meds for my sinus infection. Glad to have that visit out of the way.

It is great to see new people on board...Mish and Elise. Mish...don't be shy! You must be a timid soul if you waited two weeks to join in. I posted the first time I came across this site and I've been pestering Bronwyn ever since! My advice to anyone starting this is to drink lots of water. It can be very filling, if you drink enough. And maybe it helps flush out the old. I don't know. I just remember having enough determination to get me through the first part, and then I never craved after that. And Elise, I am happy to tell you my thighs have slimmed down more than ever before. And my bottom too. But the only way to really be sure not to lose muscle is to exercise. And I seem to be a moron when it comes to that since I need to do it badly and still can't make myself.

It is time for me to begin my Thanksgiving dinner shopping. I am kind of excited!!!!! I like to do this meal "BIG", so I'll have myself worked up into a frenzy straight away! But for tonight, a cup of tea, a book and off my feet. It really has been a long day.

Me again. I forgot to mention to Elise about my oldest sister. She is petite and always struggled with large bottom/thighs. (as opposed to myself, tall and much less of a problem with bottom/thighs compared to her.) Anyway, she has been eating like this for about 5 years now, only purer, and she has a perfect body now. She became obsessed with cellulite when she was in HS and she has been complaining about it ever since. She is about to turn 60, she looks much, much younger! Only eating like this gave her the results she wanted. She is an overachiever. Her husband is 6'5 and her daughters are tall. One has thighs, the other doesn't. They have both been eating like this and have slimmed down as well. She walks religiously. She helped me get going on this plan and I fully expect to have the body I want as well. I can tell mt thighs are trimmer. Yesterday I was walking through a parking lot and a man in a passing car did a double take! That hasn't happened in the longest time. My slim fit size 12 L jeans are looking better all the time.

I find I eat very little meat on this. More beans and eggs and cheese. Trying to eat more fish. My mother has Celiac disease and I am thrilled that I can make her green bean casserole now using Health Valley cream of mushroom soup and Funyuns. I had never bought Funyuns until today. i'm new at this diet, and plan to start tomorrow. i am definetely determined to lose weight, but have found that after a while, on any diet, i start to lose faith, or start having too many treats. does anyone have any tips to get over cravings?

oh and i forgot to mention my age. i am a sophmore in high school, and though i would like to lose weight, i am not talking about a huge amount, only about 10 pounds or so. but i have gone through so many crash-diets, with the hope of losing the weight in 2 days, but always ended up losing only 5 pounds or so, most of which was water weight, and it bounced back immediately once i started eating normally again.

i have read some of the posts on here, and i am delighted that this diet seems to have results that stay! i am really encouraged by brownwyn, i think you have a great attitude! i will also aim for 1 pound a month, i think that will be the healthiest way to do it.

wow hilda, i'm jealous of your gas prices - it's still around $4 where i live.

and thanks, i will definitely be eating lots of veggies and fruit. o and of course lots of water :)

i have another question for you all, do you think it's okay to exercise 3 times a week for 2 hours at a time (i'm a figure skater) instead of 30 minutes everyday? i'm kind of worried that i will be consuming more calories than i need on the days when i dont exercise.

I think my husband thinks I have "imaginary friends"...smile Sometimes I will say oh Connie said, or Hilda said....he looks at me and says who are Connie and Hilda. When I remind him they are my friends on line he just rolls his eyes smile

I get something of the same thing here Bronwyn. Not eye rolling, more like sly smiles. Like, "that Connie/mom/wife, she's having a time in cyberspace!" Sometimes when you don't get on for a while, I'll say "I wonder where Bronwyn is?" It takes them a bit to think of who you are. Men can be slow sometimes!

Elise, wow, your just a baby! I mean that in the nicest possible way. It seems like just yesterday I was a baby too. Your probably thinking "what!" But one day you will understand. I have thought so many times about how I wish I knew about this plan when I was younger. They say the best way to maintain our weight is never to gain it in the first place. I know that seems obvious, but it is important because even if you lose added weight, your body may not go back to it's previous shape. For instance, I have lost weight, but my love handles are hanging in there. They are smaller, but there was a time when I didn't have any at all and I weighd what I do now.

But, your still developing. You really need to be careful. You should be eating plenty of calories, just not F&S. I think you will get the shape you want doing that. It would probably be a good idea for you to keep a food journal so you can keep a eye on what you are eating. Do you eat meals prepared by your mom? If so, have you talked to her about this? She can help make sure your getting enough "real food." Crash dieting screws up your metabolism in the worst possible way. Bad, bad idea. If you eat NFNS and stay with it from this day forward, at least for the most part, you shouldn't have a problem regaining any weight. I think I mentioned before I once read that heart disease was non existent before the invention of the mill. Before that time, people didn't eat flour. Interesting!

At your age, 2 hours of exercise at one time is great. Our old bones and joints would be screaming! But activity is part of your life and there's no reason to change things. I don't think you need more of it. The eating plan will do it's job.

When I was your age, my diet was so very terrible. Luckily, we did not have any fast food restaurants in my small town, so that saved me a ton of calories, but I would eat very little healthy food. Still, I remained a size 7. But it catches up with you, it did me.

Hilda, green bean casserole is my daughters favorite. So, I guess the fried onion topping has flour or sugar. Darn. I'll make it anyway, but I'll have only a little bit. Maybe I can pick the pieces out. I have a recipe for baked corn that I might make. I woke up his morning with a splitting headache. After my ibuprofen kicks in, I'll go see what's in it.

I used to make a pot of green beans my family loved. I would start by cutting about 1/4 package of bacon (or less) and frying it, breaking it up as it cooked. Then I would add maybe 1/2 chopped onion. Cook that in bacon until tender. Drain so-so, leaving small amount of fat. Add 4 or 5 cans of cut green beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low boil/simmer and cook for about 6 hours. It takes that long for the beans to soften. It has to be checked often, adding water when needed or it will cook dry. But the end result is amazing. The beans are completely tender, as if the were just picked. And the flavor is fantastic.

Couldn't find my baked corn casserole recipe. My sister gave it to me. I'll email her for the recipe. I can't remember if it's NFNS, let's hope so.

Everyone have a great morning!

Morning all-Here in SW Michigan we woke up to a blanket of lake effect snow. Schools are closed, but since I do payroll at school, I get to come in anyway. I made it through the dreaded wisdom tooth removal. The dentist was great, I didn't need any pain meds, no swelling or bruising. Connie your advice to Elise sounds perfect. I was reading the NFNS cookbook last night and they encourage "cheating" staying on the program leading up to the indulgence and going back to it after. So a few french fried onions shouldn't do too much damage. Just found out we get to go home early today. Have a great weekend,

194 this AM. UP 3 Whaaaaaaaaa. I hope its just my cycle approching. We set up some exercise equipment in the basement that was given to us. Now that there is snow on the ground I would like to start using it. I miss being able to ride my bike and walk. Although the mall is near and I could go there to walk. But I'll just say, I hate the mall.
Strength to you new girls and old ones too. lol not literally.

I was thinking about what I did right at the beginning of my diet that worked. I lost 5 pounds in the first week. I remember thinking I would "clean out" my body of not only sugar and flour but of sweeteners too. I drank my coffee black the first week. After that I added the splenda back in. I don't expect that my weight loss should have remained so quick after the first couple weeks. But do you think the reintroduction of sweeteners could have contributed to a slower weight loss? Do you think sweeteners contribute to wanting more calories? Just a thought here. I do think over all I am eating more calories. Maybe I just need to track calories for a day or two. I did that once and remeber thinking how quickly they added up. Portions are the key. Less is more or there will be more me.

Thanks for the kind words Bronwyn, Connie and Hilda. Connie, I'm not really so much a timid soul as someone whose been on or off a diet her whole life and trying not to give up completely. The only thing I've gotten from being on a diet is fatter. I'm in the category of grossly obese, so that is a real source of shame for me. Like I said, I did do NFNS once several years ago and had moderate success. My goal is to break free of flour and sugar so it becomes a lifestyle, not just another attempt at losing weight. I'm shooting for 1-2 pounds/week and I'm working on 30 minutes of exercise 5 days/week. I know I can do it! Also, I go to OA meetings to continue to get perspective and support. Flour and sugar are truely like poison in my system. Fortunately, I like lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, turkey, etc and I love to cook, so I can hopefully pick up some tips from all of you for delicious meals that my husband will like as well. He keeps his weight pretty stable by running every other day and taking 4-6 hour hikes in the woods once a week.
Thanksgiving is at our house this year -- 20 people so far. I have a wonderful immediate and extended family, so this is always a joyous and fun holiday no matter whose house it's at.
Have a great day everyone!

Debbie, I looked and your 1 lb over from your last posted weight...right? Not a biggie. Your still down...just hanging. It's good to be down. If your weight is not dropping, you need to change things. Do you think there is a chance your eating too much? I have read MANY times that sweeteners can counter weight loss. One reason is it is believed sweeteners do lead to cravings. But I think there is more science behind it than that. I have been drinking hot tea with Splenda, lot's of it. I think I will stop that. If we want to lose weight, we have to burn more calories than we consume. Sad, but true. The exercise will help for sure, but nothing can take the place of portion control. I have begun using a salad plate instead of a dinner plate. And I make sure it's not full. Every little trick we can employ is important.

Another thing I remember from my Fit or Fat days is an exercise approach. Covert Baily, the author, states that if he were overweight he would exercise often in shorter times than non overweight people would. Like say, 10 min every hour, always reaching the optimal heart rate. I can't remember why, and I have packed those books away, but he, being an exercise expert, claimed that was the way overweight people should approach it for the fastest fat burning result.

Today I weighed 154.8. Yesterday I relied on snacking since I never had the chance to cook. It is strange, when I feel bad I go straight for the dense calorie rich foods. Cheeses, cashews, corn chips. Oh well, it is just temporary.

Mish, you go girl! Dump the shame this minute. Have you noticed overweight people do not always eat less than thin people? It's our metabolisms to blame, often hereditary, not our good sense. Now that we have found the right plan, we can tweak it and make it work. Some of us will need to eat less, some will have to exercise more. It's the luck of the draw. But the beginning and the foundation is NFNS. Be careful with the fruits. A little goes a long way.

Mish, I am jealous of your joyous and fun holiday. I love my family but sometimes it just brings out the worst in me. For the day to go well I have to just keep my mouth shut and nod my head, otherwise I get into trouble. I think that is where over eating comes into the picture for me. I have wondered in the past if it OA would help me with the emotional part of it.

Debbie, I'm in the same boat you are! Several of the family members coming to dinner are ....lets see...how should I say this...we have no karma! I have to keep my mouth shut as well. I am the youngest female in the family, so I am usually dismissed. It is so frustrating. I pretty much just have a cocky smile on my face throughout. Maybe that drives them a little crazy!!!! They usually leave relatively soon after the meal, so there is that. Sometimes they stay for a movie. Then, I have the rest of the weekend with my left overs and people I'm crazy about around me. My advice to you is...be strong. Head up, shoulders back, cocky smile on face.
