I've been spending most of my time on myfitnesspal. I have been tracking my calories and am beginning to lose weight. I'm not consumed with completely avoiding sugar or flour but am trying to make good food choices. Healthful over junk. As long as I stay under my calorie goal I seem to be losing slowly. I just joined my first 10 pound challenge. Its 7 weeks long and will be ove on Valentines Day. The goal is 10 pounds which is a healthy loss rate of 1.4 pounds a week. I want to be able to look back with no regret. |

Debbie: I pray your mom's surgery went well.
Oldests foot is healing well. She is out of the boot cast and slowly "learning" to walk normal again.

Merry after Christmas greetings! I have to say, I am glad that's over. Not to be too much of a humbug, but it just doesn't get easier, does it? So, so busy. Yesterday I got all the junk food together and threw it out. Only my daughter got upset. I just can't have it around. CAN'T, CAN'T, CAN'T! And that's my final word on that. I'm leaving New Years Day to visit with friend and little one for a week. I'm so looking forward to that. Off to Trader Joe's I'll go! I'll stock up on good, healthy NFNS foods and start the New Year off right. Brother and sister in law will be in town to take care of Gma. I hope the weather in OR is good and I can spend some time outside while I'm there...maybe burn some calories chasing 3 year old around!
I hope everyone is well and had a nice holiday. Let's all get strong and start the New Year with some NFNS dedication!!!!! |

My daughter is on myfitness pal too. I do not know why I ever quit. I guess I thought I knew how much I was eating. I think it is the only way to be accountable. I got down to 165 at my lowest and after Christmas I was back up to 174. If you are not doing myfitnesspal I would suggest you start right now and put in all you ate today. It is eyeopening and will keep you on track better than anything else I have found.
My mom is declining at the nursing home. Yesterday we were afraid it was her last. Today she is awake and eating.
I hid all the candy in my house. Trying to figure out who to give it to.
Found a canned squash with vidalia onions that is really good. |

Hilda I agree that MFP is a wonderful tool for helping us to keep on track with our eating. After years and years of yo-yo dieting .... I have lost the ability to know when I am full and when I am hungry (well to some extent anyways). Recording my calories helps me to make better choices and also confirms for me that I have eaten enough. MFP also helps us to see where our calories are coming from....fats, protein, carbs and so forth, so I feel it helps me to keep things better balanced. When I don't record I don't eat as well. I have now been doing this for almost a year. I believe it is a wonderful habit to be in. Over the holidays I haven't recorded as faithfully and I haven't eaten as well as when I do record. I definitely have seen the benefits of using the MFP tools. |

Resting today. My headache is better. Daughter is moving out. She is moving to her boyfriends apartment. She's there almost all the time anyway. I'm really kind of glad, she's 24 and a very strong personality type. She's also the one who brings all the junk food in the house. I'll be glad when that's gone because it is so easy to nibble on 10 pounds. When I get better I am going to really menu plan and shop smart. Sorry you're under the weather, Connie. "Tis the season" is also appropriate for this time of year, too, isn't it? Physically, I'm feeling ok, but I'm so stressed out, I feel like I'm going to scream! We moved my mom into an assisted-living facility. The move wasn't too traumatic for her, and I think she's gotten happier as she's made some new friends and has other people her age surrounding her. The stress is from having to scramble to get things done for her related to the move, like new doctors, insurance, getting her previous home ready for sale, etc. My siblings live about 2-3 hours away, so most of this falls on me. I'm sure many of you can relate to what's happening. So, of course, my eating has been crazy -- either no appetite at all, or seeking out lots of comfort foods. I know the right things to do, just having a hard time doing that next right thing. I'm sure exercise and staying NFNS would make a world of difference. So far so good, but it's early yet. Hope everyone else has a good day! |

Lynn, "stuff happens" is what is doing us in! At times, it all just seems too much doesn't it? It doesn't help that we are getting older and in my case, much less capable of rolling with the punches. I took MIL to the podiatrist yesterday. It is always very painful for her. Anyway, getting her out of the house is a chore. The huge rolling oxygen tank with the short tubing is always a challenge. She is on a cane and I'm one step behind her with my arms loosely at her sides in case she stumbles, pulling the tank and her purse and my purse over one shoulder, both jacket pockets bulging with water bottles, trying to get from the car to wherever. After all that, she wants to eat out and she gets out so rarely I say fine. Next thing I know we are at Steak and Shake and I'm eating a cheeseburger. She is so happy to be out, she orders a chocolate shake and orders me one too. So, yesterday was a terrible eating day but I saw her smile several times so I'm ok with it.
When I went to the doc last week they weighed me. So very sad. I keep pushing it out of my head. But this morning I woke up feeling more like myself, no headache so maybe I can start feeling stronger and more in control. I read some reviews this morning about the book "The End of Illness." Sounds like something I need to read to get my head, and my direction, back where it should be. When I surround myself with positive healthy messages, I do so much better. Today I have the ability to eat NFNS and I am going to do it!
I hope all you ladies are well. I miss you all so much. I have this feeling things are going to settle down for me now and I'm ready to start again. I'll never give upon eating right. I'll just have some days that are better than others. This site has helped me so much, I'm going to rely on it again. So post when you can girls and I will too and we can all catch up. |

Connie I am doing well. I have been busy. My Mum's funeral was on January 7th and yesterday I traveled back to my home town for the funeral of my Aunt....my Mum's sister. It feels kind of strange and sad to see almost the whole generation of my parents to be now deceased. They were such good honourable people.....they worked hard, they served so many people in their lives, they provided such wonderful examples to their children and grandchildren. They were such selfless people.
I am stuck with pretty much maintaining.....I go up and down a couple of lbs. I am having a hard time getting back to true dedication to what I have to do to lose more weight. I was listening to a Dr. on the radio today as I was driving to my osteoporosis fitness class. He said we are so mistaken in our society about how much food our bodies need to function.....he said it is really surprisingly little. He feels that we all basically over eat and that is why in North America we have such high rates of obesity and over weight people. He says we absolutely need to count our calories and eat healthy food that is more filling. I know I have been eating not as well and as a result not finding myself as satisfied and therefore, end up eating more than I should. I want to get back to being more accountable. I have a family wedding on June 30th...nephew. I think I will set that as a goal to take off 10 lbs. I believe that should be reasonable and doable. That will just leave me 20 more lbs. to goal. |

Today is a big day...I am rededicating my life to this page and NFNS. I really have had it. Yes, I cheated at Valentines and actually, have been cheating all along and I can't stand it anymore. I started the day reading healthy info (lot's of it) to get my head where my heart is. Next, some menu planning. I've decided to try some protein shakes for a bit. They should be decent nutrition for me since I spend so much time away from home now. And not cheap either! They have to better for me than the quickie foods I have been turning to. And I'm going to stock up on soups. I have to get my water in too. I'm so glad to see you all posting. I am going to start everyday checking this site FIRST!
Bronwyn, so sorry to hear about your aunt. You sound really good. Are you really only 30 lbs from your goal? Not that that isn't a lot, it's just I remember your number being way more. You've done so well. I've gained about 15 lbs (I think). Really disappointed in myself, so many days I was just trying to get through. Things are still hectic, but I realize I MUST put myself up there too.
Lynn! I'm glad your still with us. A friend of mine had a sister that ended up in the hospital with big problems, her doctor said it was from ibuprofen. He said he would never take it!!!!! Well, live and learn. I'm glad your feeling better.

Please tell me about Ibuprophen. I take 1 to 4 everyday to deal with my hip pain. I do not want to hurt my insides by doing this. Is there anything else I should take that would be better? Does this amount hurt me? Would Aspinin or Tylenol be better?
I have maintained a 10 pound loss but tomorrow I am rededicating myself to losing again as I am ready to begin reducing again. I am on myfitnesspal as 47by47 for anyone who wants to see me there. I think limiting your calories along with limited amount of sugar and refined flour is a great combo for weight loss. Debbie, I would stop the ibuprofen. I think Tylenol has some negative side effects as well. Once and awhile they are ok, daily the harm you. Talk to your doc about it. Google it. Good for you with maintaining your 10 lbs. I am so ready to get going again. This morning I have been watching hungry girl on food network. My doctor said ibuprophen (Advil) can eat a hole in your stomach lining just like aspirin. In other words, an ulcer. He said if you really need a pain pill use acetaminaphen (Tylenol). Trouble is, Tylenol doesn't work for me. He also said if you need pain pills daily, you need to see what is causing it. |

Ibuprofen, and Tylenol too I think, also harm the liver...or is it kidneys? I would be googling this topic all day if I needed either of those. Yes, work with your doctor on seeing what can be done to fix the problem.
I changed up my shake this morning. Yesterday it was powder (chocolate of course!)mixed with water only. Today I put a handful of chopped strawberries in the blender, added a splash of half and half, then water and powder. It was wonderful! I'll play around with fresh fruit and maybe a veggie. I need to find a weak tasting veggie to add. Any idea's Brownwyn? I also bought a can of very berry powder, it was buy one get one half off. Oh fun all the girls are back Connie I have hoped to lose 60 lbs. so 30 is only half way. I feel so much better at this point though that I am not as driven.....need to find my drive again. I really think the key for me has been counting calories. This is the deal for me.....I have not been in touch with my eating for many years.....so I can't just eat to satisfaction and quit. I honestly can't trust my body to make the right choices or to know if I am full or not. I wish I could just eat and stop and lose weight. I also like how MFP gives you all the macro nutrients,,,,so you can see, "oh I need more protein" or whatever. The truth is though I have been eating over my calorie limit more days than not. As a result I am just barely hanging on to maintenance....in fact I need to lose 2 lbs. to be back at the 30 lb. loss. It is so easy to over eat.....that may sound really stupid and like duh The other thing about MFP is that I seldom eat some of the things I used to eat alot....because when I look at the calories I realize it just is not worth it. The one thing I waste too many calories on is chocolate....I really need to address that. On the positive side I no longer waste calories (seldom anyways and certainly in smaller quantities when I do.....on tortilla chips).
I am making my goals very reasonable ones.....doable....like I want to lose 10 lbs. by June 30th for a family wedding. Now I need to get busy and get back on track with my calories sO I can do that.
Personally I stay away from any drugs I possibly can stay away from......there are always side affects. I have been told to take ibuprofen and the likes for my knee. At this point yes my knee bothers but, my stomach doesn't bother me so I choose to go with the knee discomfort to avoid the possibility of having a bad knee and an stomach ulcer. I just don't know....I am a little paranoid about drugs. When I had the colon surgery this past summer they had hooked me up to a pain med machine that I could administer myself....they were shocked how little I used. I had such a good recovery and I attribute that in part to using so little drugs. I would take a hit just so I could get up and move.....which was important to do and the pain was intense without the pain meds. Okay all that being said....you all know what works best for you. Debbie if you feel you need the ibuprofen then use it but, do some research on side affects.
Need to run....lets get super serious about getting some weight off before summer |

Left over red beans and rice for lunch I'm going to post the recipe. It makes a ton and it is so good! Of course I add a dollop of light sour cream to the top. I have a family reunion this summer... I'm so ready to eat clean. I announced my intentions to the family and no one balked, so I guess they are on board too. Actually, we never ate as well as NFNS. Let's all do this!
The recipe comes from Lasyone's Meat Pie Kitchen and Restaurant in Natchitoches, LA.
Lasyone's Red Beans and Sausage
1 lb dry red kidney beans (picked and washed) 1/2 c veg oil or bacon drippings (I use 1/4 c) 1/2 c dry parsley flakes 10 c water 1 tsp accent 2 tsp salt 1 tsp granulated garlic 1 med bell pepper, chopped 2 ribs celery, chopped 2 Tblsp sugar (I omit) 1/4 tsp red pepper (or to taste) 1 cup smoked sausage
In a large pot, combine all ingredients except the smoked sausage. Add smoke sausage the last 30 minutes of cooking time. Cook 2 hours or until beans are tender, on med heat. Serve over rice.
I have so many new recipes I want to print off today!

I can't believe how many funerals I have had since my Mum's funeral on January 7th. I mentioned that I then had my Aunts 3 weeks later. Yesterday I was at a funeral for a woman that I know who simply passed away in her sleep on Feb. 14th. She had not been ill and was apparently unaware that she had a heart condition. She was only 45 and still has young children at home. Tomorrow I am going to a funeral to support a friend whose sister passed away. She as well is way too young to die. She died of lung cancer....and never smoked in her life. This kind of thing sure puts life into perspective. It also makes me want to be the best person I can be....to do things I should be doing......to progress and grow in ways I haven't done so in the past. Do you know what I mean?
Anyways the funeral is a 3 hour drive and I have to be out of here by 7:15 in the a.m. so I better hit the "hay".....
Girls lets yes lose weight,,,,be more fit,,,,but lets do that without it being the whole focus of our lives. Sometimes I feel I spend way too much time focusing on my weight......... |

Connie: The husband of "The Hungry Girl" is who my kids do the background work for.
Have a great week ladies. Nice hearing from you all. |

Good morning ladies. 160.2 this morning. Ay, carumba!!!!! I haven't decided what my goal is yet.
Bronwyn, I'm amazed that you are coming away from all that gloom with such a positive attitude. I think I would be struggling. And comfort eating. It's good to hear you sounding so strong.
K10! Hi! Maintaining a 13-14 pound loss is awesome. I'm so happy for you. Do you attribute it to gluten free, are you counting calories? Tell me more about what your kids do. I had to request an invitation when I went to the site, and after awhile I got one via email. I'm still learning how to use the site. My kids can help me with that.
When I mix my shake this morning I'm going to use an orange. Great day ladies. |

Had a good day today. My husband decided he wanted ice cream and rather than have some in the house, I took him to the ice cream place and he got some. None for me. He kept asking me why I wasn't having any!!! Maybe by the end of the week he'll be able to remember. |

My mom passed away on January 30. She had started swelling and had heart failure. My two sisters and I were with her when she passed away. Her funeral was beautiful and we had so much food brought it that I gained 4 pounds that week. It was a long goodbye with the Alzheimer's. I finally thanked God for taking her. I think she only really suffered on the morphine for 2 days. We knew it was time for her to go. We had all 7 grandchildren together for her funeral and that was good. It has been a busy time of getting things in order and I have not been back on MFP much. I intend to start back on it tomorrow. It is the only way to lose that has worked for me. I am only eating 1200 calories when I am on it and I am not hungry when I am eating the right things. I have grown to love Greek yogurt. I have it almost every day. I am not totally no sugar no flour, but I am watching that closely. The sodium is what I am amazed at. Too much sodium in all prepared foods. It is going to take time to get over my mom's death. I know I have been depressed. I know that eating right will help me feel better.
Bronwyn, I just read about your mom's passing and all the funerals you have had lately. My heart goes out to you. You will be in my prayers. Our mom's are healed now and that is so comforting.
Have any of you read the book "not a fan"? There is a movie too, and a Bible Study that goes along with it. TBN has been showing the series and I have been recording the shows. It is an easy read and I recommend it. Lifeway had the book on sale last week for $5. I had paid $15 at Barnes and Noble. It is on Amazon, too. |

Awe, Hilda sorry to hear about your Mum.....both of our Mum's passed away in January. It is a strange feeling to lose a parent at any age. There is some emptiness there as my Mum lived with me for 8 years after her massive stroke and I took care of her until the end of Sept when she went into nursing care. I know you took care of your Mum for a long time as well. I am also thankful that my Mum was able to be released from this hard life she lived here with the demise of her health. I am thankful for where she is now. |

Morning ladies. 158.8 this morning, heading in the right direction. Stomach feels much tighter! Butt is still wide though.
Hi Hilda. Sorry about your mom, Alzheimer's is such a cruel disease, I'm sure there is some peace when it's over. We will always read ingredient list now, won't we? I watch our sodium because my husband has very high blood pressure. When we get away from pre made foods, it is so much easier.
Yesterday I realized I've only been using one scoop of protein powder per shake when I am supposed to use two. Hmmm, I can deal with one. Today I'll try two and see if there is a big difference. I'm going to hard boil some eggs to have handy, and chop some fresh veggies to have around. That's the plan. |

Of course I am completely ignorant about protein powders! I went to GNC and looked around a bit, told the sales girl is was interested in weight loss and she lead me to the GNC Total Lean selection. I purchased Lean Shake 25 in Rich Chocolate and Very Berry. I haven't tried the Very Berry yet. It has maltodextrine and sucralose in it. I don't plan on drinking them forever, but so far, so good. |

Morning. 158.0 this morning. Ha ha Debbie! That man walks in the door and asks what's for dinner? I'm glad to have some new foods to try. Yesterday I used two scoops of protein powder and it was really yummy. This morning I'll use the rest of my orange, but I love the strawberry/chocolate combo. Storms today...still trying to get my bathrooms cleaned. Otherwise, no plans for the day. |

Morning! I stayed on course this week, then the weekend hit! Yesterday my son made a huge dinner and it was not NFNS, but my only sin was too eat a little bit of Panko bread crumbs. He made a chutney full of brown sugar, I passed on that. Today I'm going to whole foods for my muffins and some pasta. Time for a big pot of spaghetti! Lot's of fresh tomatoes in that. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. |

Good Morning All! I'm feeling better each day, Bronwyn, thanks for asking. Struggling with staying NFNS lately. It's so hard sometimes and other times, it's not an issue at all. What I have noticed is that the easier times are when I'm also being consistent with exercising and moving my body. When I get into a couch-potato mode, I slip down that slippery slope. Being mindful is tough. Sorry to whine, but I really don't want to see those 50 pounds come back on again. I packed a good lunch to have here at work, so that helps. I'll also increase my water - another good thing to do, no matter what. Hope everyone else is well and Happy Monday! |

Good morning everyone. Doing laundry today. I am getting my daughters room ready to paint but it seems like there are so many other things to do in the house first. Cleaning and decluttering are always at the top of the list. SO why dosnt it ever seem to be done? Also my desk is covered. What are you all having for super? I have not been doing good and gained a couple pounds back. I wake up everyday determined to continue on down my path towards my goal. I get getting caught on this tangent and that has kept me from too much more success lately. I've been a little down but am chalking it up to the winter blues. Do any of you take Vit D? Someone told me it was a good idea in the winter. We get litte sunshine here in the winter and even if you are out we have long sleeves and pants. Maybe that would help with mood. What do you think? Any other recommendations? |

Lynn you do want to keep those 50 lbs. off.....good for you keeping on top of that.
I cooked a roast yesterday so left overs today. I am not a big red meat fan I think I may turn some of it into a beef, barley, vegetable soup.
Debbie I take Vit. D for my bones. I have been told that everyone in North America is low on Vit. D. Last year when I had mine tested I was very low.
The problem with over eating is getting the control back again. I have been eating too high of calories and I am up a couple of lbs. I don't want to do as Lynn suggested.....end up on that slippery slope where you end up just gaining and gaining. Debbie we need to just continue on....the past is the past and the future is all we have any control over. |

I've added 2 TBLSP ground flaxseed to my shakes. And a 1/2 a banana to go along with my handful of strawberries. The shake seems to be pretty satisfying, but I am always ready for an early dinner! I haven't had a chance to try any of my new recipes. Maybe tomorrow. I always feel so much better when I eat right, mentally and physically. It just seems the right time of the year to be more healthy. Debbie, I am convinced I have seasonal defective disorder. A sunny day can do wonders for me. I like a rainy day too, just not too many in a row. My vit D tested normal/high a couple of years ago. I have no idea why. Genetics probably. Ladies, I'm in this for the long haul again, I just know it. Goota do it. |

Morning! Debbie, I tested low for vitamin D, so I do take it every morning along with calcium and a multi-vitamin. I think it makes a big difference, especially during this time of year when the days are still pretty short and I'm at a desk M-F with no windows. Connie, I'm sure you've mentioned them before, but what is your recipe for the shakes? Having a shake in the late-afternoon sounds like it might be a better idea than a yogurt. Maybe it'll hold me longer, since my husband and I don't eat dinner until between 6:30 and 7:00. Okay, gotta get back to my files. Have a great day everyone! |

Morning ladies. My shake is 2 scoops chocolate protein powder, 1/2 banana, handful of strawberries, splash of half and half, 5 tsp ground flaxseed and water. It makes so much, I divide it into 2 servings. |

Hi Debbie! You may want to ask your doctor what s/he recommends for dosage. My doctor told me 4,000 IU's based on what my D level was in my bloodwork. I keep it the same in the summer because I wear a lot of sunscreen so I'm not getting enough from sunlight. Hope that helps. |

Thanks Lynn. My yard is full of sticks today as we had a lot of wind yesterday.
My scale finally moved again after a month. That was really hard to go through. Granted I wasnt as "good" as I should have been but the lack of loss was kind of depressing.
I really need to revisit FlyLady as my house, besides laundry and dishes, is out of control. Clutter everywhere. Its driving me nuts. OK, she says 15 minutes at a time. And get 3 boxes. One for put away, throw away and give away. Set my timer for 15 and go. Its tiring just thinking about it. |

I hope everyone is safe after the week of tornados across the country. I had no damage, but one hit 11 miles from me and damaged 500 properties on Wednesday. Could have just been high winds, but there was a tornado warning at the time. One of my friends has 8 trees down in her yard and roof shingles blown off. |

Morning gang. Ok, I've noticed a negative with the shakes...I get so hungry after I drink them. Hmmm, maybe I'm putting too much fruit in them. The last three days I haven't had time to make and drink a shake before I left the house, so I didn't make them. And my appetite has been so much more normal. What do you all think? Today I am going to have a shake without any fruit (geez, I hope it still tastes good!) and see how I feel after. I'm taking Gma to the doc and then maybe out for a salad bar.
Yesterday I made a spinach/artichoke dip. I got the recipe off Pinterest. I was going to make other things to go with it, but had to go to Gma's to help her at 5:30, so dinner was just dip and NFNS chips. I have been eating NFNS, just over eating after drinking the shakes. I'm so ready to get this weight off! Have a great day ladies. |

Connie, I wonder about the shakes and the way they are absorbed. Maybe that has something to do with your spike in appetite? I think the protein is good for you. Can't get enough of that especially if we are exercising while reducing. Did you say there was or was not any sugar in the protein powder? |
