Megan: Welcome. I started this diet on Jan. 19th. I weighed that day and that was the last time I looked at the scale. I am doing a weight loss class at church and they weigh me, but I don't look. I have had the attitude that I already blew it so I will just blow it all day too. Try not to do that if you can, it only hurts our efforts at losing weight. If you are able to get brown rice pasta, do it. It is an awesome substitute. I get it at Trader Joe's. The whole family likes it. Does your son eat whole wheat bread? If he does, maybe you can change it to Ezekiel bread. I think it is good and so does my 14 year old. She does prefer whole wheat to it though. We all really prefer potato bread, but we have to do what is best for us. Do you have alot of weight to lose. Losing 60 pounds is my goal right now. Good luck and have a great day. |

Hi- I am on July 24, 2008 of the comments. Bronwyn-I think you should write a book, about anything-not just diets. Are you a writer? I am trying to eat no flour, a tad bit of sugar. I would like to lose 10 lbs. Am going to Florida for a week with my husband to visit my mother and we will eat out almost every night. Not eating bread, pasta, pizza, or sandwiches for lunch should help me fare better that I have before on vacation. |

Kashton you are so funny. No, I most certainly am not a writer and you have not discovered the very disappointing and true story about me and NFNS yet. As you continue to read the posts you will discover that I have been writing here for almost a year and trying to do a NFNS lifestyle without the wonderful results of so many others on here,,,,but hey, I may be the most verbose NFNS person you will ever meet . I continue to want this program to work for me because it is doable. I am again serious about NFNS but the truth is I did have a major slip into old habits and as a result (depressing and discouraging result)I am presently taking off the 10 lbs. I originally lost last Feb. and March.......then I will be off to tackle the next 40 lbs. You are so smart to deal with your 10 extra lbs.now and never let that get out of control......good for you!!!!

Just checking in. Welcome Newbies...Megan and Kashton. Do yourself a favor Kashton and ditch the sugar. Your body will thank you for it. I've lost almost 45 lbs and the foods I eat are amazing.
I've been staying on my sinus meds all day and just being generally yucky. Yesterday I ate all day, today I've tried to be more in control. Just laying around reading. Not my normal self which stinks because it's the weekend and I feel like I'm wasting prime time.
Hilda, that's terrible about your mom's aide. Ice is so dangerous. And the conditions you've described in your area are horrible. I hope it clears up soon and everyone gets their power restored right away. Being ready for a disaster is important. I stocked up after 9-11, but I've since let it slide. I'm going to make it a priority to stock up again.
I bought some clothes, pants this time, on line at a few of my favorite stores in the clearance sections. It's amazing to me that a sweater that once cost 69.99 is on sale for 19.99! Anyway, I ordered size 10 in the slacks and they fit just fine. I'm starting to believe I'll make it to a size 8 by the end of my NFNS year. So now I'm thinking about ordering some dresses. I can get four for 80 bucks. Normally, they would have cost over 300. But before I could wear them I need to get my varicose veins removed. I haven't worn shorts or shown my legs in years...they are really bad. I've given up on the idea of a tummy tuck, so vein removal seems like a much cheaper dream. I'm going to have to think about it for awhile. I imagine it would take me many trips to get them all done.
I agree, Bronwyn should be a writer! I think she is the "rock" on this site.
Debbie...are you out there? And Debster..check in. We miss you guys when you stay away. |

Brownyn/K10- I can't tell you how important these messages will be to me. Yes the last few days have been quite depressing. Both my husband and I worked for the same company out here in the Silicon Valley and we have been forced off of work since the 19th of December. I have worked since I was thirteen and not quite sure what to do with myself and my 4 year old! I am supposed to go back to work on the 16th of Feb., but they keep pushing it back and back and back. I have to admit I have felt down and out the last few days and the depression is kicking in. I feel lonely now that my husband is back and work(new job) and I stay at home to prep each meal, check each label, shop, cook, clean, clean some more.. you get my point. I thought this was a good time to start the nfns because I have the time to carefully consider each item I cook etc., what I didn't realize is just how bored I can get even though I am running a muck trying to keep up with my son. My husband is with me on the program and so I prepare his breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It can get tiresome and some days I wonder when someone is going to take care of me and prep all that fine food with nfns... Okay I am totally complaining right now, time to stop. ON to the good points of the day. I bought some new sporty tennis shoes at Bostonian, the comfortable light kind so I can get off my butt and get to walking more that three days a week. I do feel happy when I am out and about, it does feel really great. Dinner was nice tonight, we had a thin new your strip, risotto, and some broccoli! Every Sunday my sister and I walk to the farmer's market ( about a mile round trip) and carry back all our prized possessions for the week. (At least thirty pounds of veggies and fruit).
As far as how much weight I have to loose, let's just say ALOT! Over 125 pounds. After having two kids and getting married, "it just happened"! Now it is time to get smart, healthy, and I look forward to the time when I can get on the grounds with my kids and wrestle without needing help up and my knees feeling like they are broken! Anyone with me there???
Anyhow, thank you for the words of encourgement, they are going to go a looong way. I look forward to chatting with everyone each day and I think I just might go ahead and weigh myself, and then again each month. :)
Cheers to everyone.

Megan: That is awesome that you are able to go to the farmer's market each week. I am so proud of you for walking there. Are you able to eat all of the produce before it goes bad? I have thrown away so much produce in my lifetime. How old is your other child. The 4 year old must keep you busy. So sorry about the job situation. My husband had to leave his job in September and he was out of work for 3 months. He is working again, but not for the same amount. At least he is working. We are doing the debate on whether I should try and get a job or not. Things are so tough out there and I haven't really worked in 15 years. I did the occasional babysitting for friends and I was a teacher's aide when my youngest was in 1st grade. She is in 7th grade now. We are in the same time zone too. I live in So. Cal. Isn't it amazing how we can all relate to each other in one way or another? Hilda: I am so sorry about your mom's aide. I hope she has someone to help her. Shoulder injuries are very painful. Connie: Congrats on the size 10's. I was thinking that I was a size 10 about 20 years ago. Man, that was a long time ago. Have a good night everyone. Let us know how your Super Bowl Sunday goes. |

Can't sleep.....groan! I hate to read articles on how lack of sleep and weight gain or difficulty losing weight are related that only stresses me out more when I can't sleep
Connie sorry about the sinus problems.....that is miserable. Is this a recurring thing for you this winter...it seems like you have been down with this a few times. I know some years are like that...get a bad cold and it can hang on for ever.
Hilda that sounds terrible about your friend who broke her shoulder. When it is icy I am very concerned about slipping and falling and breaking something but, I had not even thought of my shoulder. Great another thing to be paranoid about I have osteopenia. I discovered this much to my surprise about 6 years ago. I would not have thought I fit the profile for that but I had fallen down and smashed every bone in my ankle. I ended up with an ankle full of plates and screws and a cast all the way to my knee. I was unable to weight bear on that leg for 2 months.....very miserable. It wasn't the kind of fall that should have done that much damage so the orthopedic surgeon sent me for a bone scan and I found out I had osteopenia the forerunner for osteoporsis. In full disclosure here......it is the middle of the night and I can't sleep why not bear my soul ....I think there may be a close association between my sugary food binges and bone loss.....actually there is literature out there to back up my theory. Do any of you remember the song....like from the 70's....Junk food junkie.....it goes sort of like "by day I eat my yoghurt out of a hand thrown pottery bowl but at night you can find me passed out with a twinkie in my hand. Okay now twinkie doesn't really fit and he actually said they could find him with all kinds of things strewn about him. The thing is though and, I am talking about many years ago even when I was thin I had a conflicting relationship with food......when I ate sweets I just couldn't stop and never could get enough and would make myself sick and uncomfortable even though over all my ideology was that of being a lover of whole foods and super nutrition with stints into vegetarianism, organic foods and so forth. I have even been called a health food nut type of fanatic....with the conflict of eventually becoming heavy through my over eating of sugary things (I am not talking about eating a second dessert,,,,,more extreme than that). Basically a "closet sweet eater", kind of an out in the open health food nut but closet eater of massive amounts of sugar. That is one thing I have come a long way with recovery on that problem even before NFNS.....I am happy to say I am out of the sugar closet
Well I am putting myself to sleep with the bearing of my soul for the whole world to read should they desire to on the big wide world of the internet. |

I have too admit I am a recovering sugar/chocoholic. I was drawn to it from the beginning of eating. It was so satisfying. I relished it. I became euphoric about it. I was a curiosity to my family and friends. I have been known to literally moan with pleasure while eating. How is it not everyone is like that? And for so many years I never gained a lb. The body is a very complicated thing. Anyway, it's a wonder I didn't develop full blown diabetes. But I did manage to make it to a size 16. There was that. Now I never really think about sugar. I feel free!
Bronwyn, I'm hoping I don't end up having sinus surgery again. I would do it, it's so worth it, but I'm hoping it wont come to that. What a time you had with your ankle. Don't you feel like you could sit down and chart the events in your life and the corresponding weight gains? I think we have all put in a lot of time and energy trying to eat healthy and smart but never had enough information. I know I wish I knew about NFNS years ago.
Megan, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to master NFNS. Your schedule, although much different than it used to be, can really aid you in this. And trust me, every mom could use a break from kids. Try not to be down on yourself if you have negative feelings on occasion. Employment issues shake the very foundations of our lives. Change is hard and scary. But NFNS is 100% good. Your weight loss will take time, but will happen every step of the way. Think long term and come up with as many menu options as you can. Variety is so important.
I am worried about Debbie and Debster. Not so much about sliding on NFNS, but I think they could use our words of support for what ever issues they are dealing with. I hope they check in soon. |

We were out of town yesterday shopping for a new camper. I might have decided on the Jay Flight 28BHS. They had all the colors in stock do I just have to pick one. Bronwyn what do you think of the "L" kitchen that sticks out in the middle of the camper? It acts as a wall between the master and the living area. It seems to have a nice long couch which will be ours sons bed while the girls take the bunks. I love that the master is private and it has a lot more storage than our current camper.
I have fallen totally off the wagon. I won't mention the bad stuff I ate as I do not want to put the picture of these naughty things in your head. heh But don't worry about me. I'm going right back on NF/NS. I know, I know, snap out of it!!~ Deciding to spend that much money in a bad economy sounds like finacial suicide but we want to camp now while the kids are all still home.
Getting out taxes filed felt really good yesterday. Now we just wait for the cash to show up in our checking account in a couple weeks!
It's actually in the 30's today. I think I will go out, walk for 30 minutes and turn around and come back. Love this warm weather..........
By the way, it means a lot to me for you to be thinking about me. I feel loved. :o)

Good morning everyone. Sunshinny here for now but only 14 degrees. Laundry and dishes for me today. Anyone catch the Super bowl? What a fun game. Its the only other football game I watch besides ND football. We went to my mom's house and met up with my sister and her family. I wore a sweat shirt and quickly got too hot as the fireplace was on. So my mom offered a shirt for me to wear. We went back in the bedroom to get one and she said she would look for a BIG one. I was insulted as she always has to point out my size. She is no skinny thing herself yet has to point out how much bigger I am than her. :o( Whatever. The one year anniversary of my surgery was last Saturday. Hello everyone. Debbie M. congrats on the one year anniversary of the surgery.
Yesterday was day one of my challenging food consumption. I did have the bbq chicken and ribs, but not as much as I would have and I didn't put any extra sauce on them. I also had creamed corn and mashed potatoes. No dessert. I am sure things were loaded with sugar, but I can't worry about it.
Today we will see what the options are at the gathering after the funeral. I will make the best choices I can and eat less than I normally would.
Sorry to the ladies in the cold, but it is a beautiful day here. My friend was a surfer, so I am happy for that.

Hello everyone! Happy Monday- what a great game yesterday. Yes Risotto is an Italian rice. You can find some easy to make risotto in the rice isle. Speaking of rice, I went shopping this morning and purchased my first thing of brown rice~ I am easily a white rice kinda girl- but clearly a problem! I was VERY good with my selections of food at the store and it gets easier each time. Yesterday was tough with the food choices, I can't lie. But I woke up this morning eager to tackle my days challenges and the nfns. I have planned some great days ahead meal wise and a few trips to the park to soak up the 72 degree weather. (Sorry- not trying to mean to all the folks back east, I know it must be terrible). We are expecting a good storm at the end of this week and we desperately need the rain.
k10- I am sorry about the funeral today. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Debbie in the middle of the night I responded to your question about the trailer and strangely enough it simply disappeared and never showed up. I think you may have me mixed up with someone else.....I am not a camper. I did look at the picture of your trailer though and it is very nice, Good for you guys keep the economy going.
Debbie my Mum is really tiny and always has been. Presently she is only 92 lbs. but her average weight through her life would have been 105-110. I remember a number of years ago when she was on an Asian trip that she wanted to buy my sister and I silk shirts. She was trying to explain my size to the sales person who didn't speak English. The sales person got the picture and started to say.....huge, fat girl shirt. Now my Mum is a sweet person but for some reason she had to repeat that observation of the sales clerk several times after she got home. Of course it makes you really ticked off......just like your Mum going to look for a BIG shirt. Just look for a stupid shirt and quietly get me one that would fit.....
Debbie are you back on this thing and flying? Make today a day where you have no sugar whatsoever,,,,,you can do anything for one day at a time.
Saturday night I was at the mall and it has been so snowy, cold, windy and icy that I haven't gone out to walk anymore that necessary for the dog to do it's business. I decided to really book it around the mall. It felt really good until my knee kicked out on me and I wondered how I would get back to my car Luckily I got the knee mobile again and made it out of the mall. As I have probably mentioned several times I have bad knees but about 3 years ago I threw my one knee out of joint.....which was so incredibly painful in fact so much so that I literally passed out and hit the floor which was a blessing as my knee snapped back into place. I have had a lot of trouble with it every since though and some times it just kind of slips over and is painful and makes walking very hard.
A new week and time to get even more serious and more dedicated to our health and fitness. Time to work NFNS into a program where the weight comes off. |

Connie one more thing. I have decided to take your advise about forgetting about previous weights.....you know the up and downs and so forth and move fore ward from where I am NOW (not worry about what I have been or what I could have been and so forth). I believe on Jan. 2nd when I re-started NFNS that I was 212 and today I am 205.6. Last night I experienced a set back with old habits and chocolate but it was just last night (one night out of 30) and last night is over (and it was a lousy night....bad eating doesn't make you feel good). It was emotional eating and I know the trigger so I have to dismantle that gun.....although I have not been successful previously in doing that. |

I have not been to the store now in a week and over the weekend ate some items in my freezer at home that had flour and sugar in them. I am hoping with all the snow shoveling I burned off some of the calories. I had run out of fresh fruit and meat. Now I am back at my Mother's house and I have more choices left. The melted snow refroze on the roads and made them slippery again this morning. I am not getting my mom out again today. She was out over the weekend with my sisters. I have not been anywhere except my Mom's house and my house since last Monday when I was stocking up on items for what I thought might be a couple of days. |

Hello All! What a great game! I had the benefit of making most of the food at our Superbowl party. Chioppino, prime rib, bbq chicken, clam dip... Stuck to the NFNS and was pretty darn proud...except I believe the wine and cocktails did me in. Up a few from the previous day, but I do much better during the week. I made homemade party mix, and was disappointed that all the cereal had sugar in it. My daughter couldn't resist it, so she fell off the program, just briefly, yesterday. I just picked at the peanuts.

I am such an idiot! When I ordered the fruit, I read the ingredient list of the figs first, which showed no sugar added. I assumed the other fruit was no sugar added as well. But after reading your post, I ran and checked and they do have added sugar. What am I going to do with all that fruit? Of course I'll give it away and I know who would make the most of it. But darn, darn, darn!!!! I want to say the dried fruit at the store is sugar free, but I'm afraid I could be wrong on that too. But I am going to check and let you know. Thankfully the figs are ok and they are my favorite of the bunch. So a lesson learned. A crummy, rotten, semi expensive lesson. Now I get to feel sorry for myself for awhile. Later gang. |

I have been blessed having him in my life. I did have a serving of macaroni and cheese at the reception. His wife had told how yummy it is, so I had one serving and had water the rest of the day. Disappointed is the right word. First I was a little unsettled about weighing 147 again. Then the sinus thing...then too much food and then the sugary fruit, WHICH I LOVED, and then I topped it of with seconds at dinner. And unfortunately there was some sugar in there too. I'm just really farther away from being on track than I have been before. It's not a good feeling. My son laughed about the fruit. He said it was nothing. I don't know, maybe something else is bothering me. I'm not generally hard on myself. But the fruit was an indulgence (that included shipping costs) and I bought quite a bit if it. Or maybe all my biorhythms are bottomed out. Back to the drawing board.
Go Kathleen...Go! And you too Anonymous. I'm really loving the positive vibes. I'm soaking them up.
I'm planning a trip to the grocery store tomorrow. All I have in the cupboards is off limits dried fruit. (OK, you have to admit that was funny!!!!) Time to get some rice cakes and bananas. And dinner things as well. That's what I need to do, menu plan and shop. I'll concentrate on some standards, not feeling very creative right now. |

I have totally cut down on my cooking. I went to the store and got center cut butterflied pork chops, steak, chicken breast and a whole chicken. I divided the meat into meal size servings and then a dealt with each meal as such,,,,I did a cajun rub on the pork chops, I did a pesto marinade on the chicken breasts, I did a rub and marinade on the steaks and like I said divided into meal size portions for the 3 of us and froze. I got farmer sausage and perogies for my husband. I cooked up a big pot of spicy black beans and a pot of brown rice. I bought coleslaw package, spinach package, and lots of veggies and fruits. I got plain yoghurt and cottage cheese. Before I go to bed at night I take out a package of the seasoned meat and put in the fridge. My husband always has to have mashed potates ( I eat more yams). Dinner is like a 10 -15 min. thing......which is bizarre for me....I am always usually in the kitchen cooking for hours. I broil the meat which is very favorable and tender, I make a big salad , mashed potatoes and yams and a vegetable. NOthing fancy and no real recipes but balance and satisfying. |

That's how I usually cook, with the occasional bigger meal. It does keep you out of the kitchen when you cook like that and that is very important when trying to cut back on calories.
Lat night my husband tinkered with my computer. I hope it acts better now.

Morning. Not weighing in this morning. No way. Made my way into the cereal last night.
Has anyone ever seen the site EDiet website and all the foods they have for sale? They have ketchup. That's one item I've not found a homemade recipe for. I may order it.
I'm making a lasagna dish tonight. I got the recipe out of the Sugar Busters cook book. I'll use rice noodles. The recipe, which calls for whole wheat noodles, says to layer them in uncooked and then bake. I've never done that. I'll let you know how it comes out. I will toast some Ezekiel bread and sprinkle garlic salt on it. And a salad. It should make enough to last a couple of days.
Later ladies. |

I think anonymous is Connie.....sorry you have been feeling so lousy and having the night wanderings but you are at such a good weight just maintain for a while til you are all better. I too would like to find some ketchup we could use.....I will check out EDiets but honestly shipping and handling to Canada isn't expensive.
Okay I am still an enormous hour glass but I decided that this enormous hour glass needed to have a decent dress up outfit....I am tired of being a shabbily dressed enormous hour glass. I went and shopped the sales last night. I went into upper end priced stores and bought stuff on half price that I would have never bought full price. Do I look skinny in my new dress up outfit,,,,no not at all but I do look stylish and put together. I got a skirt, a jacket, a blouse and a scarf. The clothes are well made, hang well, fit well and nice materials......like I don't have to hold the jacket shut or anything....it fits. I didn't get smaller with the idea of wearing them tight and open or whatever.....until I lost weight...I got them to fit right now. I never buy myself anything because I am always going to lose weight.....or I buy cheap stuff because I won't be wearing it long. It is nice to have a nice outfit. |

Bronwyn: I am sure you look great in the new outfit. I am glad you bought "for right now", and didn't worry about when it will be too big. Notice I said too big not too small? I know someone, who will put on a certain size and it will be too small and not look nice , but she is happy it is a certain size. She can't be comfortable. S&H must be huge to Canada. What do you freeze your food in? Do you have one of those suck out the air things? I can't even think of the name right now.
Kathleen: I had oatmeal with raisins for breakfast too. I also squeezed (squoze) some blood oranges for juice. Yum!
I didn't weigh yet, but I did measure my waist and hips and I have lost there. I am encouraged. I thought this way, at least I have an idea that things are moving in the right direction without having a number in my head. I will be weighed at my class tonight.
Kathleen again: Do you think the once a month thing would be a good idea for me?
Good day. |

So, does anyone have advice on what soups are okay from a deli that supports the NFNS way of living? I know that any noodle soup is off limits. What about the cream soups...clam chowder? The condensed soups (Campbell's tomato) list a sugar content. Is it best to just stick with the beef barley? vegetable? |

Yes, that was me earlier. I can't stay signed in anymore and I forget to do it.
Julie, canned soup without sugar is really hard to find. Sometimes I have some anyway, just not often. I usually add a dollop of 2% cottage cheese to it. Good stuff.
Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit!!!! I checked out all the dried fruit at WM and found out the bag of blueberries I ate had sugar. Aargh! For some reason I assumed dried fruit had no added sugar. I have consumed a lot of sugar recently. Explains some things. I bought some dried plums. I then bought some fresh strawberries and blueberries. I washed them, cut the strawberries up and divided them into baggies. I'm freezing them and will thaw them and use them one bag at a time on my cereal.
Today I ate some Laughing Cow. It's been a long time since I've had any and I really enjoyed it. I feel like I've been in the kitchen long enough today and may do the lasagna tomorrow.
I'm thinking all the sugar I was eating may have been contributing to my funk. Tomorrow I hope to be feeling sugar free again.
Bronwyn, good for you, buying some new clothes. What a difference attractive clothing makes! I am a firm believer good quality is the best value over time.
K10, dropping inches is the best gauge! Feels good, huh? Keep going. How often to weigh is such an individual decision. But once a month is certainly not too much.

Hi Bronwyn, Thanks for thinking of me. 196 today. I have been so so with my eating. Mostly on track, but definately not reducing. I've just been out of determination. Everyday I keep thinking this is the day I will find my way back. I haven't been consentrating on myself at all. I lost my Dr. Gott book. I must have left it somewhere. I keep thinking if I begin reading it again maybe I will get inspired again. Its frustrating because I don't want the rest of winter to go by just to find myself still fat. I know the good weather will help with my activity level when it comes. But good weather is so far away. When I'm not doing house work, laundry, cooking for the family and running kids around I feel out of energy and lazy. I guess its a visious cycle. Eat bad, feel bad. Everyone around here has been passing a cough and cold around. Were just a sniveling sneezing complaining bunch right now. Wanna come over? heh We decided that Travel Trailer was too heavy for our tow vehicle. Back to square one. Another stress.......to spend the money on a camper or not? |

Weighing in once a month is the way for me. I much rather see a definite decrease in weight and inches as opposed to the ups and downs that come weekly and daily! My 2nd weigh in is in 19 days. Keeps me motivated since I lost 8 pounds the first month.
I figure the little sugar in soups, etc won't make me crave sugar. It is certainly the cake, frosting, cookies, candy, pie, etc... that made me heavy!!!
Even though the clothes are not the size you want to be, wearing well fitting clothes is a boost in itself. It shows you how good you can feel when clothes fit no matter the size!
I get frozen fruit, strawberries and pineapple at Aldi. They also carry pineapple juice. Mix either fruit with juice and a dollop of sf cool whip...awesome smoothie!!
Day 38. Good day to all! ;) |

It is a new day! 145.4 this morning. Wow. I was on a sugar kick, didn't know it, but definitely had side effects from it...weight gain...moodiness. Sugar is definitely toxic for me. Yesterday I ate prunes and real fruit. I thought I was eating a lot...had the chips and cheese too. But it came out ok. I did have an extremely light dinner. Tonight the lasagna.
Debbie, hang in there. You really could use something motivating to read. It helps. Sorry everyone at your house is sick. That is the pits! It's ok to be in a "hang on mode" until things get better. Try to do as little damage as possible and know that this too shall pass (sickness, cold weather, stuck in the house, etc). You'll be back to your old self before you know it. Just don't give up completely. Every little bit of effort helps.
Kathleen, you have anticipation built into your program! I wish I could be that controlled. The little bit of sugar in the soups could make you crave more, it depends on how sensitive your body is to it. Eat some protein with the soup, that should help.
Julie, potato chips have a lot of fat, something we need to watch. Fat has more calories, etc. etc, you know the drill. Maybe you could try and find an alternative snack, triscuits or something like that. Just a thought. I know if we eliminate flour, sugar AND watch our fat, we will lose even more and at an accelerated rate. I need to chop up some celery and peppers.
My sinus cold is hanging on and on. Whatever! I'm determined to heal it myself. Much to do today, later gang. |

Debbie- sorry to hear you are feeling down and out. I keep my Dr. Gott's book out at all times so I see it every time I walk into the kitchen. When I am feeling bad I do read it over and over. Hey Connie,
You always do such a good job of encouraging everyone on this site. No matter what is going on with them, being successful or feeling downtrodden, you always meet them where they are with support. I want to thank you for that. smile I found my books! South Beach as well as Dr. Gott's book. I will begin reading them again. I like what you said about being in "hang on mode". That really is comforting to give permission to yourself to just hang on intil the dust settles. It takes the pressure off and makes me feel like I am not failing. See how you are? Thanks again Connie.
Bronwyn, you too as very supportive and I appreciate you. How are you doing lately? I saw your weight is dropping and I believe you are where I was when I started. Good for you!!

I need some advice.
My 14 year-old daughter, who originally started on this program and lasted only 2 days, is driving me crazy. She is eating significantly more food than I am now. She complains that she is fat. She needs to lose around 10-15 pounds, but she won't change the way she eats. I think I am just going to get rid of all the food that isn't NFNS. I will have her eat what we have, because I hate to throw it away, and then only buy her NFNS. She likes the rice pasta and things, but one of her problems is what to take to school with her sandwich? She wants chips of some kind. What would be a good substitute for a kid who has braces and shouldn't be eating anything that is too hard and crunchy? Her other problem is quantity at meals. I don't think I will have issues with her and putting her over the edge with talking about the food thing. It is such a fine line with girls. My husband says she likes food too much and she is too stubborn to go the no eating route. You never know though.
Kathleen: I think I will weigh once per month also. I will weigh on the day I started NFNS, that way it won't always be the same day of the week.
Debbie M: Now that you know what your vehicle is capable of towing, only look at what will work for that truck. You don't want to be too heavy, then it will take forever to get where you are going. Don't forget you how much the additional things weigh as well. Food, clothes, dishes etc. That adds up fast.
Good day all. |

K10- My daughter just had her braces off this last few months. In her lunch we would do a sandwich, string cheese, applesauce, and a fruit cup. It keeps things light and away from the chips. She also takes a water bottle, and doesn't get the juice and never any soda. I found that target has some great snack size stuff for lunches. My daughter also takes the Luna bars and she enjoys them. They are natural and they seem to fill her up. My daughter also needs to loose some weight, so I try to teach her about what I am making and why. She gets into it and never complains about the food we eat. I agree with you, I think the best thing to do is to rid the house of all the nsnf. If it isn't there, it won't be eaten! Best Wishes! |

K10, I have an overweight daughter. When she is ready, she will have on do it on her own. She is 21. Trust me, I can't tell her anything.
She can take flour free corn chips or pirates booty or sesame crackers. I would also pack her some celery slices with light laughing cow. A piece of fruit too. Does she eat nf bread with her sandwich? You will soon find out everything at the store that she can have and come up with some new things. Do raisins have added sugar? Tell her she is immensely lucky that she is young and still growing. Now is the time for her to do this. If her appetite is big, get her to drink some water and munch on fresh veggies when she's at home. That can really fill you up if you drink enough. And even a little bit of exercise can go a long way at her age. Most important, be positive and peaceful when you discuss her weight with her. |

My problem with lunches now is, she won't take a sack or lunch box, she is in highschool. She does take a peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat. I will use up the whole wheat and have her eat the Ezekiel bread. She did eat it those 2 days she was on this. Usually baked chips or Sun Chips, before I went NFNS. I just noticed the baked cheese puffs I bought from Fresh and Easy are made with cornmeal. Wow! I accidentally bought NFNS. Funny huh? She does take water every day and is really good about drinking that. We only drink non-fat milk. I will buy Pirate's Booty too. I figure once the house is NFNS, she will have to eat what we have. If she is at a friend's house and they have pizza or something like that, her body is probably more capable of rebounding back. I don't want to force her to not eat treats like that. I want to have her have the knowledge. She and I were talking today about how after she gets away from the sugar the desire will decrease and she may not feel well after eating it. She was open when we were talking, which is great. I never had a weight problem until I was out of highschool and my dad started making it an issue as I got older and even then I would somewhat rebel and I don't want that. Thanks for the ideas. |

Hello everyone - I just started the NFNS diet two weeks ago and I am thrilled to see such a supportive group of people here. You're entries motivate me to continue as I now recogize that the weight loss will be gradual. I'd like to lose about 10 lbs - which is a fair amount of weight for me as I am a Little Person. I've had some health issues which has limited my ability to exercise more. As I am not able to drive or work at this time, the last thing I wanted was to be on a strict diet and/or start counting calories. I like the idea of eliminating flour and sugar and substituting with other foods. I don't feel so restricted with this plan. So far I have lost 1.5 lb. I appreciate your meal and snack ideas and I am begininng to become a little creative with what I eat. I am curious about the Ezekiel bread - is it sold fresh or frozen? I have been making "wraps" out of corn tortillas and in fact filled one this morning with low fat cheese, an egg and salsa. It was pretty good. I'm anxious to try some of the tastely treats mentioned above - particularly the pumpkin desserts! I congratulate all of you on your success and commitment to this program. I certainly look forward to using this as a resource through my weight loss journey. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas! |

Welcome Lori, you will do fabulous on this program......10 lbs. is so doable.
Connie I have to say that I don't believe I will ever be able to say "I can't imagine eating chocolate". I do hope though to never binge on chocolate ever again. My friend who became a vegan and has done so well on that program (although I don't believe I could make that a lifestyle)....eats 3 squares of very dark, high quality organic chocolate a day. That is the only dessert she allows herself. She feels very satisfied with that and feels it is so preferable health wise and craving wise to that of eating rich desserts and so forth. I actually like that idea. She never feels like she is being deprived and she feels satisfied. Then of course there is the added benefit of chocolate having some healthy antioxidants.....but not if you can't handle it and binge on it.
I feel so sorry for kids that are overweight. So much of their social life revolves around getting together for pizza and whatever else high caloric junk they are having. It is tough and I think even more so for girls who have this constant image of skinny models as role models. I honestly think one of the biggest hurdles to over come is thinking that you can do it....lose weight. It so totally has to be a change from within.....you can support and you can help but until the person makes it a priority it is hard to really make change. I also think that the support has to be carefully given so that the child doesn't have their self esteem stomped on. I know a woman who was heavy when she was young and no matter how her father worded it she knew that he hated her being heavy and she felt his love was conditional. She has had to work through a lot of emotion stuff tied to the feelings of being conditionally loved......she is now 30 and lovely and thin but it is for her not her Dad. |

Welcome Lori. There seem to be a few of us that have been doing this about the same amount of time. I find Ezekiel bread in the bread department of Trader Joe's. It is in the refrigerated section at a place called Sprouts and probably at Whole Foods or Henry's as well. Health food stores seem to keep it in the freezer. The cinnamon raisin is really good. I haven't felt restricted either. I just need to allow more time when shopping to read the labels. |

Hilda: Here it is.
Meatloaf "Muffins"
2 pounds ground beef or turkey 2/3 cup oatmeal 1 cup milk 1 egg 1 small onion, chopped (approx. 1/4 cup) 1 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp dry mustard 1/4 tsp pepper 1/8 tsp sage 1 clove garlic 1/4 cup ketchup (I used Heinz reduced sugar) I didn't measure this I did a couple of squirts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix ingredients together and place in muffin tin (regular cupcake size). I add additional ketchup to the top of each "muffin" and spread over meat. Cook approximately 30 minutes or until done. My oven runs hot. You can also make it as a regular meatloaf. Cook approximately 1 - 1 1/2 hours. My sister-in-law also has cooked this in a large zucchini or summer squash that is cut in half lengthwise with the seeds scooped out. Place on baking sheet cut-side up.
I hope you enjoy it.

Good morning all and welcome to those who have recently joined us. Day 40 nfns. New state of mind I have noticed: even when I am angry or blue, food is not what I am turning to. I really believe that sugar is a mood changer. I am glad to have it gone. This is from someone who could pound an entire box of Little Debbie cakes, or 3 donuts in the store parking lot, etc... eating in excess like that never made me sick, although it always left me wanting more, usually not satisfied because I would eat more sugary stuff.
Stay warm, stay dry, get well soon, stay nfns and be good to yourselves!! |

Morning! I've decided I am eating too much dried fruit. When I first started NFNS I avoided fruit completely because of it's high GI. I need to limit mine to fresh fruit only and not necessarily every day, maybe every other day. I never skip my vitamin so I think that would be ok. I'm not sure when I will have to do a health assessment again, but I'm just not going to worry about it. So now I need to find a home for the dried fruit that I have. Maybe I can keep it in the house and it wont tempt me. All I know is that it has turned my cereal into candy and I've started to crave it.
Time to take Grandma to the doctor. Dang, I wish I could stay home this morning. It's quite a trek and I would just rather take it easy.
Debbie...I have so many questions for you, but not enough time to ask them! I am curious about the forbidden foods you have been eating. Do you plan on keeping your pantry NFNS, or do you keep off limit items around and then just try and ignore them? I am glad your starting again...everyday is a new opportunity, but do you plan on doing things differently? I simply can't have temptation in the house. When Holly was home I would put all the junk food in a bag and carry it out to my car at night. It worked.
I will check in when I get home. Best to all. We are warrior women, don't you forget it! |

Hello Ladies - It's so nice to check in each day and see how everyone is doing on this NFNS diet. My husband is also trying to lose some weight and is using Slim Fast - he just said this morning how he wishes Slim Fast had a weight-loss support group on line! Although I feel pretty good and have a sense of accomplishment in trying to avoid flour and sugar, I was pretty frustrated yesterday with my weight loss yo-yo. Could it be that I do have to keep my calories in better check - although I really don't think that I am over-eating. I have substituted rice pasta for regular pasta - I hope that isn't jeopardizing my progress. It felt like the no flour no sugar thing was fairly straight forward which is why I was hoping for quicker results. I guess it is a work in progress. K10 your meatloaf muffins sound great - thanks for the idea of switching bread crumbs with oatmeal. I may give your recipe a try this weekend. Bronwyn you sound very dedicated to the program and definitely bring a lot of support to all members - tahnks for your positive feedback! Hope everyone has a great day! |

Put the dried fruit in zip lock bags with Valentine's stickers on them and send them to a Sunday school class or to a teacher or coworkers. |

Hello everyone and happy friday! Is everyone ready for a nsnf weekend? As I typed that I realized I can't even see that far, I have to take this one day at a time.
K10- Hah! The rain yes we have it up here in Nor Cal too. I was on yahoo weather and there is a severe weather alert because we may bet up to .15 inches of rain! And I agree, folks don't know how to drive in the rain out here. Everyone is in too much of a hurry!
I kept myself really busy yesterday and I will do the same again today. I plan on cleaning out all of the nightstand and dresser junk drawers. Yesterday I tackled the kitchen. When everyone got home, they said WHooo it looks so good in here mom! Cheers to me! It felt good to cleanse, even if it was just the kitchen junk drawers, bills, etc.
I hope everyone has a healthy friday! One day at a time. Or maybe I should say for me.. one meal at a time! |
