You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

The approach is to keep things simple by just eliminating flour and sugar, the two primary food ingredients that are causing the obesity problem in America. Our culture has become addicted to sweets. This book helps you break the addiction and get on track for eating healthier while losing that extra weight.

History

Criticism

Giving up bread and sweets may simply be too hard for some people. Sugar is in a great majority of products sold today. While the diet sounds simple, implementing it and sticking to it is quiet a challenge.

Debbie you mentioned that you had 3 Coors the other night,,,,,,,there are 145 calories in I think a 12 oz. can,,,,,,I just googled it and now I can't remember, geesh smile Anyways that is a lot of calories in just beverages. Do you often consume that many calories in a beverage, that could be a place to reduce some calories by cutting them there.

I snacked a lot today.......maybe because it was a holiday and it seemed like we should be doing something and we didn't I don't know.........I think it was a holiday in the States as well wasn't it?

Good morning everyone. Just had an English muffin and two slices of turkey bacon. I do love those Ezekial muffins. I am out of my sugar free jam so just ate them with butter. I bought a rump roast (buy one get one free) at Winn Dixie. My mother told me to sear it on top of the stove and then bake it at a low temperature for several hours. I am going to add carrots, potatoe and onions. Anyone have a different cooking method that would make it tender?

My daughter is 22 and I remember all those nights I would walk in and she would be on the phone and the computer at the same time. It's not easy but it does go by so fast. She turned out great and I am so proud of her. Hang in there...this to shall pass...too soon.

I've been snacking on granny smith apples dipped in SF peanut butter with a little splenda sprinkle on top. I look forward to this every night for my after dinner snack.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Morning all. 143.8 this morning. Yesterday I had my normal 2 cups of coffee with healthy doses of half in half. That always holds me until lunch time. Then I did all the shopping. When I got home I made the shake that was so filling. But before I made the shake I opened a jar of cheese dip and dipped some corn chips in it. I had more than a few but I was hungry and I was sticking to the plan so I did it. I didn't make the shake until after all the groceries were put away. By the time I finished the shake I was stuffed. I still felt full at dinner time, so I skipped dinner. If I didn't have chicken that I have to cook for dinner I would try to do the same thing today.

Angie, crock pots can transform tough cuts of meat into melt in your mouth dinners. They are great for roasts with vegetables. In my opinion, there is no need to sear before starting.

Debbie, I think your beers are definitely messing with your diet here. They should be very occasionally. People that drink a lot of beer have earned the name "beer belly" for a reason. It's not just the calories, it's the kind of carbs in them too. Wine would be a much better choice. And not that "beer wine" they sell. I can't remember what it's called. But they call it wine and it's really flavored beer.

Bronwyn, sorry about your stress, I hope it gets better for you soon.

K10, sounds like the sleep over went well. Losing our roller coaster cravings on this plan is such a wonderful thing! I think you'll find that even in social settings it's easy to walk away from sweets.

Dentist appt today. Then time I started an ironing marathon. Some errands around town too. It's cold and rainy, wish I could stay inside.

Great day all.

You are right girls. Beer does have a lot of calories. I have the occasional beer to unwind. I know its not good for me physically or mentally. I will try to cut it out for the most part.
This morning I'll have Ezek toast and a little cream cheese. Spinach salad for lunch and chops and broccoli for supper. No beer today. I'm out and I'm not buying any more for a while.
There are no more sweets in the house, thank goodness but I have to bake a cake as its Steve's birthday today. He is 45!~

Even one beer a day can be an addiction. So can a glass of wine if you have to have it. Connie, it does not sound like you are eating a healthy balanced diet. Where are the fruit and vegetables? You are supposed to eat breakfast. It's a rule.
Connie

Hey Hilda, I think I'm doing ok on the fruit. I had a banana yesterday...I have them quite often. Also, cut up berries in my cereal. Also, several times a week I have 4 oz of oj. Plus, I take a multivitamin everyday. So, I think fruit is covered. I have never in my life been a breakfast person. Sometimes on weekends I have some. But I've never been able to eat breakfast when I'm not hungry. Also, I use half and half in my coffee and that has nutritional value. I think it's much better for you than artificial creamers. Basically, I have protein for breakfast. As for yesterday, I ate so much during the day I didn't need more calories. I also had some cashews while I was shopping. At first glance, it looks like I didn't eat enough, but when I start adding things up (and it adds up fast!) I'm covered. Believe me, when I get hungry, I eat. But I don't think hunger and fruit mix. When I'm hungry, I go for protein. My fruit is always added into something else.

I agree with you on the alcohol. It sneaks up on you. People think they are in control and then sometimes...

Okay I need to stop the snacking. Snacking leads to consuming too many calories and I have gone up a couple of lbs. I know that I need to focus on balanced good meals and not snack.

Connie your weight loss is stunning. Are you eating a way that you can eat for the rest of your life........it sounds like you plan to do that. If that is the case then you have really found the diet that works fabulously for you.......You know if you are cleaning houses a couple of times a week that may very well may be your exercise program. You should try writing down what you actually do eat in a day for a few days. It sounds like such a little tiny bit of food but ir sounds like as you think about it there are things you forgot about.......i certainly need to start recording i keep saying that but then don't do it.

Connie thanks for the advice on the roast. I had already put this one in the oven when I read your text. I have a crock pot that I have never used. I will try that on the next roast. How long would you cook it in the crock pot. I have no book with it. I'll let you know how my oven roast turns out.

I had chicken salad again for lunch. I know it sounds like I have a lot of chicken salad but it is something I really enjoy and I can make a batch and split it up into several meals of even a snack with rice crackers. I put pecans, celery and red grapes in it so I am getting all the food groups.

I did 10 minutes on the eliptical and some stomach crunches and some lunges. All in all I did not get my 30 minutes in but I did work in the yard so I feel I got a little more.

Connie hope your dentist appointment went well.

Great news...clean bill of health from the dentist. At this cleaning, and at the last cleaning, the hygienist commented on the fact that I have zero plaque and calcification. Well that certainly is good news and I've no doubt it's because of NFNS. Then everyone fussed over my weight loss and I told them all about NFNS which they had heard of before but had not heard about all the wonderful substitutions they can have. It was fun.

Angie, there are surely guides online for crock pot cooking times. They would be a lot more accurate than mine. Just don't go buy the book "Fix It and Forget It." I did and in my opinion it was a waste of money. I need to search out some more recipes online too. I love chicken salad...I say eat it as much as you want!

Bronywn, this is the way I'm going to eat for the rest of my life. This morning I had my coffees, then when I ran errands I had some cashews. Then after dentist more chips and dip. I must confess I bought some more dried figs...I just love them! They are small and I had 3...I had 3 or 4 yesterday too. Anyway, I'm going to really limit them. I looked at the back of the shake mix. No wonder I was full...I consumed over 400 calories in that shake. Tonight I plan on having baked chicken, steamed fresh brussel sprouts and rice with cottage cheese and chopped tomatoes. Jerry is going to be traveling much, much less so I will be cooking more. I'm going to have to get used to that. Sometimes I like to have a bowl of cereal for dinner. He's not going to go for that. It will be nice to have left overs for my lunch.

The only way I can explain my weight loss is I'm burning more than I'm consuming. I have yet to exercise. It has all been calorie consumption. And I have not gone hungry. I can't do that. Other than a few bumps in the road I've stayed true for months. I'm just not eating all the time. I used to do that. Eat all day long.

Has anyone on here ever been to or lived in Albuquerque, NM? Possible job opportunity for my husband. California is such a mess. The budget is a joke. They will be raising taxes and car registration fees will double if the proposal passes. It may have actually. We have never felt like we were going to live here forever and the prospect of a move is somewhat exciting.
I had oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts for breakfast.
For lunch I had some Triscuits (maybe 10), a yummy orange, a small amount of popcorn my daughter couldn't fit in her bowl and the left-over couscous from last night. Now I am stuffed. Not totally NFNS then.
Connie: what cereal will you be eating tonight?

I remembered something I bought at the chiropractic clinic at the end of 2007. It's a powder supplement called Doctors For Nutrition Greens First. I used to make a shake and have it for lunch. At the time I added whey protein powder with it. It's super vitamin, probiotic and enzyme powder. I may start drinking that again. On days like today it can come in handy.

I have been getting a little tired of cooking lately too. I just keep going through the Dr. Gott's cookbook and doing something new everyday. I am often surprised by how good some things are....especially things that previously I never would have given a moments thought to.

Here's a suggestion, and something that has been good for me. Take your snack food and add extras to it to make it a meal. I have been craving nachos. So I saute onions, mushrooms, zucchini and peppers, add leftover turkey and cheese to my chips and it becomes a full meal and I get my fix.

Good luck making it through the munchies!!

I've had about all the quiet I can stand for awhile! I'm sure I could eventually get used to living alone, but I'm ready for my husband to come home. It seems like he has been gone forever.

Had my fruit and cereal for dinner, and a handful of cashews for protein. Good enough. Tomorrow I'll try a shake. This time without the protein powder. I can't remember what my nutritional goals were when I bought it but I remember it wasn't too gross. And maybe I'll try a fruit smoothie too. Hmmmm. This could be a nice switch for awhile...and super easy.

Well, night all.

After work needed to get bread for kids' lunches. I was so hungry and had a headache. Thought it would be great to get a box of those frosted cookies and chow, but I know better. And I did better! I bought a little pkg of ham, cheese sticks and bananas and snacked on them and it actually made a lunch. Too bad it was at 4pm. I will have to bring stuff to work to eat.

I did get some sf icecream last night. Edy's. Choc fudge and mint choc chip. Very good. Kids enjoy it too. Mint choc is gone.

Next monday is weigh in. Can't believe almost 8 weeks already! So glad I have stuck with it. If I hadn't, 8 weeks would have still gone by, but I would not have been very happy. I hope I lost weight again this month. Anxiety setting in a little.

Kathleen: It sounds like you have been doing a great job. I weighed yesterday because of the Bible study I am doing. I had lost a little over 2 pounds since last week at home. Today I actually looked at the scale when I weighed in at my class and it said 1/2 a pound lost. I really don't know what I am going to do next week as far as looking at my weigh-in. We had to set an eight week goal tonight and I picked a loss of 8.5 pounds. I hope I can do it. I have started exercising so I think I will be able to. My husband lost over 4 pounds since his weigh in 2 weeks ago. Guys have it so much easier. My hubby wants to eventually weigh what I weigh right now. That will be weird if he makes it there. Hopefully, I will be to my goal too by then. My long-term goal is 130. My goal by my 40th birthday is 150. That would be an average of 1 pound per week since I started NFNS. What is scary is how fast October will be here.
Connie: What kind of cereal do you eat?

Morning.

Kathleen, that is huge...turning your back on frosted cookies when you wanted some. I'm assuming you may have been wanting them more from a past memory than actually craving them, right? Turning your back on true cravings is so hard. NFNS seems to make it easy to do. One of the things I gave up along with F&S is processed meats. Very rarely I have ns bacon. But there is a lot of sodium in processed meats and that may cause some water retention. There's other stuff in there too that's not so great. It will do in a pinch, but a lot of it may be working against your plan. Can't wait to hear your weigh in results! You are doing so good.

K10, kudos to you too! You are moving right along losing weight. And it's great your husband is with you on it. Yes, it seems unfair how quickly they lose, but we can get there too. So, your birthday is in Oct? Mine is next week, 50 for me. Egads! I can't remember what my goal was!!!! It doesn't matter, I am so happy I discovered NFNS. I feel better, I look better. I know I'm eating healthier than I ever have and I've learned a lot about foods I had never before tried. I eat the Uncle Sam's cereal. I buy it at Wal Mart and Kroger.

I saw an advertisement for truvia, made from stevia. Anyone using truvia?

Great day all.

You do sound kind of down Debbie. But if your not feeling like doing NFNS, don't. I think it would be better if you waited until you could stick with it. Otherwise you'll just end up frustrated and probably start hating the whole plan. It also sounds like you have other things on your mind. That could be part of the reason your not up to this. But, the good news is, you've learned a lot of healthy things on this plan. So even if you're not doing it 100%, you're better off in the long run. No way will you ever look at f&s the same way you did before. No getting away from that!

I'm thinking about making a great big shake with everything in it. The greens first has a mint flavor. If I add some chocolate mix, I'll have mint chocolate. Not my fav, but I could add some banana and have something tasting like a banana spit...maybe. I'll keep you posted. I would space it out over the day. Much more nutritious than chips and cheese.

K10- moving can be so exciting. I know that we have been looking to move up to Washington as soon as the opportunity arises. You are right that California is a mess! Not only is it expensive, but can be depressing too. ( Avoid News). I haven't chimed in for a few days, but I have been staying nsnf. I even made pancakes this morning for my son who begged me and I didn't have any. ) Ok, one small bite, but that was it.) I have been loving some fuji apples and they are the smaller ones, so not too much natural sugar. Snacking is killing me, so I have been going out more... shopping or just walking around town running errands. It seems to take the need to eat away. I put on a coat yesterday that I recently bought and could hardly button, but when I put it on, not only could I button it but it was loose and looked oversized. It was the highlight of my day and gave me inspiration to stay another day nsnf.
We have our first day of sunshine in about 4-5 days. We received about 5 inches of rain in those few days. As much as I like the rain, I am anxious to get out and enjoy some sunshine!
My favorite meal from Dr Gotts book is the rosemary dijon chicken, OMG is it fabulous paired with some steamed veggies and polenta, everyone loves it here!

Have a wonderful day!

Megan-where did you go shopping? I wish we had more stores closer to where I live. I might be in the market for some new pants. I'll have to check Dress Barn or Marshalls. Drinking more water ( I'll stop about 1 hour before I leave the house) and the apple a day is helping more than just NFNS alone. I appreciate all the advise on this board. Next time we go to Florida (april) I'll take cashews with me, so I can still have small meals without too many calories. I know the cashews are high, but big meals at restaurants are worse.

Megan there is nothing more motivating than a change in the way your clothes fit.......that sounds like a really significant change from tight to loose.

Hilda I buy the Almond Ezekial cereal but I don't love it......I like it once in a while but I get tired ot it really quickly. I do like all the Ezekial breads though. I have been buying Silver Hill balance a little more often because I can pick that up anywhere. The Silver Hills is more calories though.......Ezekial 70 cals/ slice and Silver Hils 100 cal./slice. I think the Silver Hills slice is a little bigger. Even thougoh Lundberg organic brown rice. rice cakes are 70 calories each.......I don't know for some reason they are just so much better that I have decided it is worth it.

Debbie I am sorry to hear that you are feeling defeated. I have that happen to me a lot as well with dieting......any kind of dieting really........after so many years and so little success and so far to go to where I want to be,,,,,,,,it just gets overwhelming and discouraging. Listen if you don't feel success or enthusiasm for dieting right now then don't stress yourself don't do, it but in the same breath don't go crazy with sugar and flour.......you will not feel better by doing that. Have you ever read any of the intuituve eating stuff......maybe you would benefit from some time doing something like that.

Connie: Have you put cinnamon and Splenda on your cereal? I really liked the way it tasted with that. Happy Birthday early. 50 is awesome and look how much healthier you are this year. Yay for you. I love how you say Egads. My grandma would say gads, so it makes me smile when you say that. She is no longer with us. Please don't take that as an old thing. :) I tried stevia and I thought it was bitter. I like Splenda better.

Megan: I am so proud of you for your loss in inches, that is exciting. I have been avoiding the news too. I can't stand it. We are having sun today too. We are almost to our average rainfall for the year now. You need to tell me your Target sale thing. How does it work? How do you prepare your polenta? I have some from Trader Joe's.

Debbie M: Maybe you aren't feeling great because you aren't on NFNS???? I think the flour and sugar thing affect me more than I thought. Regardless, maybe just focus on one thing, like portions or something.

Kashton: Yay on needing new pants. Cashews are good aren't they? I bought a small bag the other day, they are just too tempting in a can for me. I try to ask if I can order the kids meal if they will let me? I have even paid extra to do this. Some restaurants are making healthier kids meals too. Chili's is one of them.

I just had an Ezekiel English muffing and an orange for breakfast. I exercised with my friend today. Woo hoo.

Connie I have used truvia for a couple on months now and love it. The packets are a little larger than splenda and I usually only use a half a pack in my coffee or tea. They say it is healthier than splenda but that's anybodys guess. I do like it, though.

Debbie I hate you are not feeling like staying with the plan. It sure has helped me in so many ways, I can't imagine going back to the way I use to eat. My digestive system is sooooooo much better. We will say some prayers for a renewed spirit for you. We all get in a rut and we all will need a pep talk and some prayers along this journey.

I had hot cereal for breakfast and some turkey bacon about mid morning then for lunch I had some roast beef and carrots. Leftovers tonight.

I bought a probiotic today. Has anyone ever used them? There is a Christian TV program that talks about their benefits so I thought I would give it a try.

Well, headed to Target to pick up some cleaning goods. Everyone have a nice evening and Debbie Hang in there.

This is turning out to be such a great day. It started out gray, then the sun came out. The temp has warmed up to the point of really warm. It is time to get my drivers license renewed. I could have done it automatically, but decided I would go whole hog and get a new picture. My last picture was SO BAD, I cringed every time I looked at it. So with full hair and make-up off to the DMV I went. In and out. Easy breezy. The picture came out great, everything was automated...no biggie. Then I got all my errand done, all my phone calls made, you know...the yuck ones. insurance companies etc. Ahhhhh. I'm on top of it today.

I received a mailing from health insurance co with tips and such. One of the paragraphs stated it boils down to calories consumed and where those calories come from. It also had a BMI chart. I'm at 21. I'm skeptical of that...I don't have very much muscle tone. Anyway, it said for moderate activity a woman should consume between 1800-2200 calories a day. So if we are trying to lose, at least for awhile, we should consume even less. And if those calories are not wasted but nutritionally packed, we will be alright.

Megan, that happened to me with the baggy clothes. I ended up at a wedding with a jacket that hung off me and pants I was afraid were going to fall down. They were slinky with an elastic waist. Isn't it amazing where our weight comes off of? Our shoulders, face, ankles! As well as our butts, thighs and bellies.

K10, I have never put cinnamon on my cereal. Currently I'm addicted to pineapple and chopped blueberries/strawberries. I'll remember that for when I don't have any fruit.

The windows are open and there is a wonderful breeze. The chimes on the front porch are chiming and all the cat's have found a window ledge to lay on. I'm really feeling happy today...at last!

Sometimes our posts crack me up!

Tonights dinner, baked chicken, fresh steamed brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes came out good. It was a last minute adjustment, we were supposed to grill the chicken...we were supposed to have rice and the brussel sprouts were very strong. I guess because they were fresh. I doctored mine up with some extra salt and mixed them with my mashed potatoes. All in all, a nice save. I feel very comfortable right now. Not over full.

K10, I hope that bloated feeling doesn't last long. It almost seems to me when I do overeat I do not handle the consequences as well as I used to. As if my body has changed and there's no going back. I really could pack the food away before NFNS. But so much of it was junk I was probably malnourished in some ways. Maybe that's one of the reasons I was eating all the time. Just a thought. Polenta is a mystery to me. But I would like to learn more about it.

Tonight a cold front is coming through. Tomorrow will be nippy. I am very thankful for today's beautiful weather. If I stop and think about it...I am thankful for many many things.

Night.

Eating still not thrilling me. Well, food not thrilling me. still nfns. The food thing could be related to hubby's goofy work schedule: 6 days on, 3 off. This week days, then midnights, then afternoons. It throws my groove off, if I actually have one. He kind of appears in the way sometimes. Terrible, I know, but c'mon. Wish he would do something more constructive on his days off, but...He is on days starting Friday for 6 days. I am so thankful for his job.

I was wondering if I should join WW or something for a couple of months and see if I can take off at least 10 lbs. 10 lbs. certainly doesn't help much but it is better than not losing 10 lbs. WW has a new program called momentum. What are your thoughts? I would still do NFNS but maybe with more structure for a few months.

Bronwyn, I decided to start calorie counting along with NSNF for better weight loss. I log my calories in on Daily Plate. (That really helps keep me in line with nuts and other munchy food.) It doesn't cost any $$, yet keeps you accountable....staring you in the face. That combined with some regular exercise seems to be getting things moving better for me.

Way to get back on track Tres.

Kim so you measure and record calories? How many calories do you eat a day......do you count fat grams or anything else? What happens if you make something that you don't know the calorie count to? I need to go and check but I don't think Dr. gott lists calories in his recipes.
Kim
posted 19-Feb-2009 2:48pm

Go to livestrong.com/thedailyplate and create a profile. There is an area for you to set up your calorie goals, based on weight, height, activity level, and speed of weight loss desired. There is a database of foods, including brands that already has values calculated. (Or you could manually enter calories if you knew them.) I have used the database for everything, so I don't need to enter any extras, they are there already. There is a little ongoing pie chart that shows your percentages of fat, carbs, and protein daily.

As far as Gott's recipes, you would need to enter ingredients separately at first. You can create and save ingredients and values as a meal to make it easier down the road. I just started it on Saturday, so I am still getting the hang of things. When you search the database of foods, make sure you type in exactly what it is in order to find it. The other day, I typed in "corn chips" and could not find what I was looking for...only Fritos. I then had to type in "tortilla chips" and it came right up.

If you eat a lot of the same things throughout the week, it gets pretty easy. Let me know if you run into any problems.

Connie I would love to hear about your vein removal. I have been reading up on it just the last couple of days. I have one little patch under my eye and when I look in the mirror it is all I see plus a few patches on my legs. I was researching for some over the counter creams but it don't sound like they work very well. What kind of doctor are you going to?

It's warm but very windy here. Just heard about the tornadoes up in Georgia and north Florida. Scary things! Bronwyn, the calorie counting is a good thing. It really helps you see what you are eating each day. It is a lot of trouble but for a couple of months it would be worth it. I did it for awhile and I just kept a composition book on the kitchen counter and recorded them as best I could. It also helps just writing down everything you are eating. I have a friend that goes to ww when she has something coming up and she wants to pull off a few pounds and it always works for her.

Kim I registered for the daily plate. It seems a little confusing......even in registering I had to keep coming up with a new username because they wouldn't accept any name I put in. Now I have to remember my username smile I cook form scratch for almost everything so I guess it will be a bit of a pain for a while typing in ingredients. I hadn't really measured my breakfast food but estimated it. I guess I will start to measure and in doing so I think it will probably be as effective as going to WW. I have always hated the WW meetings anyways........sort of a snob thing smile ...... I would kind of sit there and roll my eyes at their nutrtional suggestions thinking "I the fat lady knew more than them" smile

According to their calculations I can eat 2.195 calories a day to lose 1 lb. a week and 1.695 calories a day to lose 2 lbs. a week. I have to tell you that I kind of don't believe it but I guess I will give it a try and see. I honestly don't think I could lose weight at those counts. I think it will be good to test this out though as I haven't been good at keeping track.......maybe I will quit snacking because it is too big of a pain to record smile

Hey Debbie what do you think of giving the calorie count a try for a week or two?

Break time. Actually, I had to stop ironing altogether since I spilled some water on the ironing board and ended up having to throw the cover in the wash. I really didn't feel like ironing today anyway...although I did manage to get all the dress shirts done. Yippee!

Kim, I would love to try the brussel sprouts that way. Please give me more specifics on the recipe.

Debbie...everyone is rooting for you! Chin up...shoulders back...gut in...eat smart!

Bronwyn, I dole out my cashews in a baggie. Then I nibble on them all day. I don't eat them all at once. The wedding is coming up fast. I don't know about the WW idea. Do you really think they know something you don't already know? If I were you, and this is what I did in the beginning, I would concentrate on lean protein and vegetables. I would limit my fruit. I would also limit my grains. Make sure your taking a multivitamin. Snacks should be raw veggies. The more basic and simple you can make it, the better. Go easy on the dairy. And portion size is super important. Your going to have dummy down big time in the kitchen, but this is very doable. I think you could lose more than ten lbs doing that. Here's what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Breakfast 2 scrambled eggs, with
2 ezekial toast, or
cereal with small chopped fruit

Lunch Protein from dinner the night before, with
low fat cottage cheese, and
veggie

Snack raw veggies, or
small amount cashews, or
rice cakes with sm amount of cheese

Dinner lean protein, with
rice or potato, and
veggie

nothing after dinner!

And of course, water. Add a couple of servings of fruit juice during the week. That was my diet when I started this program. It's not impossible to do, but stay away from the kitchen as much as possible. If you could keep it that basic, you would easily lose weight. Put a picture of a body you want to have on the front of your fridge and look at it often. Stay busy in between meals to occupy your mind. When you eat out, you know what to do. You have make sure NOTHING, NO ONE and NO SITUATION can make you stray! I really changed the way I looked at food. It is fuel in it's most base level. I need fuel, but I have stored fuel I need to burn. All my fuel can't come from eating. I'm not saying to go hungry, I never did. But I was very careful what I put in my mouth. When your trying to lose is not the time to see how much great and amazingly tasty food you can eat and not gain. It's time to see how little you can eat and be fine. That sounds terrible! But it's true.

Hey Tres! Good to hear from you. I haven't weighed in a couple of days. I'm going to say 145. It goes up and down a bit. I'm wearing size 10 most of the time. Some of them are too baggy so soon I will be trying a size 8. I don't know if I'm there yet. Clothes I put in the dryer seem to be better at size 10. Hang to dry and iron would be the size 8's. We'll see. I had to go to a notary yesterday at a business center. As I approached the double glass doors I could see my reflection. My legs looked thin, even up by my thighs. That is one of the biggest differences I have noticed on this plan. Before I always had the same body shape, only smaller. This time I seem to be losing all over.

I made my super shake today. Chocolate mix, banana and greens first powder. Plus 8 oz 1% milk and 8 ice cubes. It was really filling, but to top it off, I added 2 rice cakes with 2 laughing cow. I'm full until dinner. Every serving of greens first has 7 servings of fruits and vegetables. It tastes like mint, which I don't care for, but I can drink it. It took me awhile to drink. I sipped on it for a couple of hours and had the rice cakes at the end. Not something I will do everyday, but maybe every other day.

Time to clean out the fridge...yuck!

The truth is my husband likes simple and we have tension around my desire to cook unique and different kind of dishes. It will be "KISS" for me for a while at least. I feel like I can get down at least 10 lbs. maybe 15 if I make this a serious attempt. I can't focus on the negative thought that even with 15 lbs. I am still a gorss 190. I would love to be an 8 or a 10......Connie how fun. The wedding colours are black, white and tiffany blue. She wants all the family to wear black.......how fun it would be to shop for the "Little Black Dress"........alas I will be shopping for as decent of an item in black that I can get frown

I'm thinking the old WW calorie limit was 1200 a day. I would only have one egg at a time and put some salsa or cheese on it for breakfast. Has anyone eaten any green beans lately? I cut up an onion, a potato and added some baby carrots to 2 cups of my moms gluten free beef soup base and baked the veggies for lunch. Ate half.I took out the veggies and added a can of green and shelly beans to the soup base and baked them in it for an hour. I love to have a can of Italian green beans or the ones with the Shelly beans occasionally. I think you have to have a snack during the day. Eat your fruit between meals. Have 3 cups of popcorn or some sugar free jello if you are starving. I really think if we would eat all the things we were supposed to eat to be healthy, we would not be hungry.

Bronwyn...those were the colors of my nieces wedding. So beautiful in the pictures. I'm glad your willing to let your creativity become squashed for awhile. I hope its not too hard to do. I should mention, I usually only eat cashews when I'm away from the house. If I have any at home...it really is just a few. They have too much fat to be an effective food item for everyday. When you feel hunger pains in between meals, go for the fresh veggies. If that doesn't satisfy have some lean protein. Chicken or turkey. You can do this. Don't get stuck fixing food you can't eat. This morning my mother in law called to see what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday. I told her none. She said ok. I was ready for an argument, but she didn't fuss.

I know you can lose more than 10 lbs. I have a number in my mind but I'm not going to say it. But remember, when eating like that I lost a lb a day. I'm not saying that will happen for you because I think my metabolism was in better shape than yours, but it is more than 10 lbs. So, you go girl! And your not gross...not at any weight. Don't you ever say that or think that again. Be your best advocate. How could you forget what a great lady you are?

I bought some dresses on line. 4 for $76. I shop the sales. Anyway I'll never be able to wear them before I get my legs done. I can't wait. I haven't wore shorts in about 10 years. Or dresses without black tights. Call me Viola Swamp! My veins are everywhere and often in clusters that look like huge bruises. So people would always say, "what did you do to your leg?" Good grief! It was embarrassing. Now I have 2 big green ones, but that's different from spider ones and I'm thinking I'll live with them just fine.

Love you guys

Connie, the brussel sprouts just need to be coated in olive oil, salt and peppered, and roasted for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. A suggestion would be to add to that baby potatoes, diced butternut squash and shallots.....or really any combination of veggies.

Bronwyn..I agree that the calorie allowances seem a little high. I usually fall quite a bit short on mine each day. I cook everything from scratch as well, so it is a little bit more work. I keep my breakfast and lunch pretty basic for convenience sake. Even if it is not exact on the meals, it gives you an idea of where you may be consuming more calories than you realize. If I still have 700 calories left for my dinner and I cook Dr. Gott's menu, I should fall well within my allowance.

Hilda..I love fresh green beans sauteed in a little bit of butter with almond slivers. That always seems a better option over the cheese sauce!

When my mom was first diagnosed with diabetes she saw a nutritionist. One of the things they told her to do when she was craving in between meals was to have some lean protein. Especially before bed. If we have cereal for breakfast, we should have some lean protein with that too. Maybe a string cheese? Or a lean meat.

Left overs for dinner. Not a problem for me. Everyone is gone tonight. My plan is to try and get to sleep early. I slept so badly last night. Vivid dreams with people in them I've never met. Sometimes we just need to give up and go to bed no matter how early it is.

I do think counting claries is wise. Is there an easy way to do this on the computer? If someone already posted it, I missed it.

My husband obviously was thinking about me this morning and offered this advise when he woke me up. He said " It dosn't matter what has happened in the past. We don't have to live according to that. We can make our future what we want it to be." He was thinking about a statement I had made yesterday about myself not being able to lose weight. I said if I can't do it now, I never can.

I think I will ponder what Steve said. I agree we don't have to BE our past. I want to change my future. If I want my future to be different I have to BE different.

Do you consider yourself a perfectionist? Bronwyn, You know what I mean by FlyLady's definition. I am so much a perfectionist. That dosn't mean I achieve perfectionism around me but the more paralizing meaning of it. That if I can't do it perfectly it dosn't get done. Fear is such a part of it for me. I'm afraid that if I fail, people will see that I am not perfect. Why do I feel like I need to appear perfect. I think most of it is in the way I was raised. So I need to fight that to be more peaceful and accept who I am.

Feeling truely peaceful.........priceless.

Debbie M. watch that septic tank closely. The last few years our water table must have been rising together with our septic field failing. The thing about our septic field was that it wasn't even very old and it should not have been failing. We really feel the plumber had done a bad job and that was why it failed (in fact since that we have heard nothing but bad stories about the work this plumber had done for others as well). Anyways the bottom line is that everytime we would have a big rain or a big melt we started to get water in our basement. Fortunately, we had not finished our basement yet. Before we finished our basement we had to put in a new spetic field and another thing (shoot I can't think of the word for it)........but it deals with the high water level in melts and big rains. I am so glad that big expenditure is over with because that would really kill us at the moment. Even with all of the repair work we have done I still worry about big melts or rains.

Debbie I think doing on the line recording of calories is a really good idea. Because I am limited in my computer skills I found Sparks people to have their program set up in a way that I could navigate better. I like how they give you a pie shape figure that indicates the percentge of fat, carbs and protein you ate. I am going to do it for a few days at least althouogh I admit it takes a while........but if it helps me focus then it is worth the effort.

Megan planting flower, doing yard work.......that sounds so strange. We never plant here until the Victoria Day week-end in May........about 3rd week in May. Any earlier and the frost will kill your efforts.

My husband is dropping weight like crazy. It is so easy for them. The advantage he has too, is he isn't home all day with food around him. My daughter now has to eat Ezekiel bread for her lunch and our peanut butter with sugar is almost gone. I have been sending her with the jam that has no sugar added, just juice and baked cheese puffs. She drinks water with her lunch.
I just had to throw away lettuce, cabbage and green onions. I throw so much produce away. I just need to buy lettuce when I plan on making a salad with dinner. I have 2 stores really close, so I just am going to do that.
Debbie M:Sorry about the septic problems.
Talk to you later girls.

Kim thank you for mentioning the on-line programs for recording your food intake. I am just loving this. It is such a great way to really see what you are doing and I believe it is going to make me more accountable as to what I am eating. I love NFNS but I think I will be benefitted by the journalling of my food. I don't want to eat any nuts today because I can see that would put my calories up there to high to benefit me with my goal to lose 10% of my weight smile

Debbie, Victoria Day is to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday.......I have no idea why in todays world we celebrate a long dead Queens birthday but I don't think anyone would want to reliquinsh the holiday. It is the long week-end we look fore ward to because of the time of year it is. That is often when people start their campling week-ends, put in their gardens and so forth.

I just want to recap the benefits of NFNS........even if we are calorie counting. Taking flour and sugar out of your diets helps you to make better food choices, foods that stick with you longer and don't create the ups and downs in your blood sugar that foods lower on the gylcemic index do (highly processed or high sugar). Eating this way makes it possible to cut calories because it helps to eliminate cravings. You are more satisfied with your food and feel more in control and that makes you feel happier and more committed. I could go on maybe we could all list reasons that we want to stay NFNS.

Debbie I know I did not explain the septic field thing well but this is one thing to watch for......our septic field became saturated because if was defective. The septic field could not deal with heavy rains and big melts......it was already saturated so all the mositure would just run into the septic tank and then the septic tank would be too full and it would back up in the basement. That is why we would end up with water in the basement. Before we got the new septic field and the sump pump in the basement we had to do a reroute of the septic field as a temproary measure. I don't know where you live but you could only do that in the country .......like if you are only on an acre or 2 I am not sure if you could do that. Where I live you have to have a minimum of 4 acres to have a well and septic field.

Thanks for the info Bronwyn. I hope we don't have trouble but I wouldn't be surprised if we do.

Hey gang. Today I remembered the formula for figuring fat content. I used to do that during my fit or fat days. Maybe the whole world was doing it. Anyway, in case your unfamiliar with it, you take the fat grams in a serving and times it by 9. Then you divide that number by the calories per serving. I just calculated cashews and they are 75% fat. That's why we should eat them rarely. Watching our fat intake during weight loss is important too. I walked in the door starving and wanted some nachos. My chips are 45% fat. My refried beans are fat free. I opted to make a dip of beans and cottage cheese. The cottage cheese has 25% fat. And it is a pretty good dip.

We are all going to be home for the weekend. Should be interesting!

Steve dug up the septic. Its not to the top but about a foot down. When we fluch the toilet it seems to go out ok. He covered it up and said we will look again in the spring. hmm

Debbie I don't know we must be talking about different things.......you would not dig up my septic. It is a big tank with a lid on and you can open the lid and see the level of the water inside. There is a level that it is safe to be at.......which is quite a way down and you need a flashlight to see. If it was a foot from the top on my system your basment would be a foot under water and maybe even worse stuff.

Good luck on your week-end Connie! Connie I am sure we both knew the fat content of these items,,,,cashews, chips and so forth but I think I overlooked that because they fit in with NFNS. Yesterday though when that little pie shape configuration at the end of the day came up and displayed the distribution of my calories, carbs, protein and fat....... I was truly shocked. My fat content was by far the largest part of the pie.......YIKES!!! That was a very good visual.

I am dreqading going out ot dinner tonight.

Rats Bronwyn! You are so pumped up and already facing a difficulty. I think I would eat smart before I left and then nibble on something healthy during dinner. Your friends will surely understand an upcoming wedding to get ready for.

I stopped eating the chips and switched to rice cakes and beans only. It was fine. I wouldn't want it all the time, but Fri night seems to be mexican fare night around here.

Yes, Bronwyn we are talking about the same thing. He dug in the ground and got the septic tank lid off and the water was a foot from the top but for some reason we don't have water in the basement. We are going to call someone to come out tomorrow and pump it out. I think we are on the brink of disaster. I'm almost sure our leach field is failing.

I did ok today all accept for the half a bag of Doritos. Doritos are evil.

Good night all

Hello-

Gardening is great exercise. Today the weather was cold. This weekend I will be going through my garage and cleaning up. Hubby has too much junk and paperbank books. I started to donate to goodwill or library, to toss in trash, to keep. The house is looking cleaner.

Walked to my neighbor house and back. Weather is cold here in Alaska.

In Alaska it is a pain in the butt to go to the gym here. Unless I go during my lunch hour.

At work we started a walking club. We just go up and down the stars and around the building for 30 minutes. Then we eat are lunch. we also walk during our coffeebreaks. At least I get my cardio at work. Have a grea day.

It is 1:45am and the snow has begun. Chicago...we are looking at 4-8 by the time this is done. I have an ivy in my garden that is greening up. I watch for the Bleeding Heart to break ground. It is always my first to come up. Not there yet.

1st weigh in: 170 on old scale, 177 on new scale.
I figure I was around 178 when I started per the old scale.
But I am going on the new scale for my weigh in on Monday.
8 pounds in 4 weeks. I hope the same is true this time. Even 5 pounds would be awesome. I cannot handle the daily ups and downs of the scale. Even weekly I would be discouraged by 1/2 or 1 pound, but 5 or 8. That is a real tangible loss for me.
I am looking forward to Monday weigh in! I will post asap.
I hope to dream of beautiful gardens tonight. I love to garden.
Flowers, rhubarb, bushes. This year we will try snap peas. Roses, climatis, honeysuckle, trumpet vine, hibiscus! Ohhh. So much to look forward to. Hopefully not suck a large stomach to work over this gardening season!
Caio!

Ahh. 2 posts in a row, 6 hours apart. It is 7:15am and the snow came down. A few inches out there. The birds are chirping though, going from plant to plant eating the seeds. Glad I didn't clean them out in the fall!
Uncle Sam cereal with added raisins. It is actually quite good. I really don't miss the Lucky Charms and Frosted Flakes!! Although, they were good.
Day 55. 2 more days til weigh in!
Some shoveling needs to be done.
Ahh, exercise!
Have a great day.

Kathleen...I am in the Chicago area as well and not loving this snow!!! Reading Megan's posts about gardening and 70 degree weather.....I am green with envy. I guess on the bright side, shoveling is good exercise as well.

Bronwyn..I am glad that the calorie counting seems to be helping so far. It has definitely made me think twice before eating certain things.

Everyone have a great NSNF day!

Kathleen: I am excited for your weigh in. I can't wait to hear. I am glad you are good at gardening. I am not. I can grow jasmine and weeds. That is all. I bet your yard will look beautiful. I wish we had snow. I am in Southern California.

The Oscars are tomorrow. They talk all about it on the news. People come from all over to watch the stars walk the red carpet. It is something I have never thought of doing ever. They are taking down the protective tents and the weather man says it might be a bad idea. I just don't try to go to LA on purpose unless it is for a flight. We live 20 some miles from Beverly Hills and it took my husband an hour and a half to get to a Mercedes dealership at 9:30 am. He had a job possibility there a few months ago and he told the guy he wasn't spending 3 hours per day on travel.

I have been to Chicago. The architecture was beautiful.

I was good at Chili's last night. My friend and I shared a grilled chicken platter with rice and veggies and had our own salads. I did eat too many triscuits last night. New day new start I guess. I was NFNS yesterday, unless they had sugar in the rice or dressing. I did get it on the side and I dipped my fork in it.

Good day ladies.

Kim I know in a way it is mind games......but I find I don't just stick things in my mouth as much because I don't want to bother going and log-in to record it. I didn't finish out my day of recording yesterday because I just didn't really know how to figure it. We ate at friends last night and it was a beautiful meal.....I kept my focus on NFNS but I didn't really know how to do the calorie tallly. They had beef tenderloin, baby portobello mushrooms done in this divine cheese sauce, a nice salad (whether the dressing had some sugar in it or not I am not sure), asparagus with roasted cherry tomatoes and kalamata olives and baby roasted potato. She served cake and ice cream and I didn't make a big deal or bring my orange as planned I simply declined. I think I did jsut fine because my weight isn't up today and is in fact down 1/2 lb.

I have been strict long enough that the cake was not an issue.......keep in mind that I love cake.....I love dessert. She had even made an old fashoined cake that had been one of my (growing up) family favourites. There was even some emotional attachment to the cake because of child hood memories. I wasn't hanging on by my nails while people at it though.......I was truly okay. I have decided that after a big meal eating the dessert is more habit and social than anything. Because I had not eaten my piece at the table the host sent me home with a piece which my husband graciously (ha, ha.......he didn't need it either) ate to save me any temptations.

So how are all of my NFNS pals doing today? Bright and sunny here ........ don't know how warm yet as I haven't been out but I do live in a very bright sunny place where it looks wonderful even when it is cold.

Morning..ish. I made the whole family a NFNS breakfast. Bacon, scrambled eggs, toast with jelly and juice and coffee. It was so good. Everyone really liked it. I have been buying only Ezek bread for quite sometime now so everyone knows it's that or nothing. But when you butter it and, in this case put jelly on it, you can't tell it's not regular whole wheat. Now everyone is milling around with full bellies and smiling faces!

Rainy here today. In the high 40's I think. I'm going to be stuck doing laundry all day and probably into tomorrow. Nice day to take it easy in the house. I can't wait until it's spring planting time. I have two spots outside I want to put beds in. I would do it myself but the initial ground prep requires muscles. The rest is always up to me. I find the hard part deciding what I want to plant. After that I'm a machine. This year I also want to plant two trees. This may be my year to get it done!

Good job on the dinner last night Bronwyn. Isn't amazing what we can pass up without cravings?

Great NFNS day everyone.

My laundry is piling up. With 6 people in the house and trying not to use too much water laudry is getting backed up. I might have to get to the laundramate if the septic dosn't get straightened out soon. Some one told me to drain the washer out into the yard. This is illegal here but I was told some do it on the sly. It would save a lot of water from going into the septic. We have some one coming on Monday to see about pumping and maybe airrating the field with high pressure. We'll see what happens.
good night

Okay so mad......can't sleep!!!! Sorry Debbie I remember the trips to the laundry mat when we were having problems with our septic field...yuck!!! It was also 2 second showers for everyone smile I hope it is a cheap and easy solution to get things fixed up and working well.

I bought a new loaf of Ezekial raisin bread today.....yikes it has gone up in price, it was bad before and now it is outrageous ($7.99). That was at the health food store I need to check out the prices some where else.

I was NFNS today..........It was real quite on here today.

Morning. I was too tired to post last night. It seemed like I was in the kitchen all day. Big breakfast and dinner. I don't do that much anymore. Last night I tried one of the recipes from sparkspeople.com. It looked interesting and was it ever. It was called Pork with raspberry cocoa sauce. Basically it was chocolate pork chops. We all laughed our heads off! It looked like brownie soup and tasted terrible. We thought it was great we could all say we once ate chocolate pork chops! We each only took a bite. Jerry went to Popeye's and picked up some chicken. The mac and cheese I made with the rice noodles was fantastic. Today we are going to try and salvage the chops by rinsing them and covering in bbq sauce. Whatever! I did end up buying a pomegranate/blueberry juice that was part of the recipe and really tasty. It has no added sugar.

I think the plan is for all of us to go out to dinner today, a combination celebration for my and Jerry's birthday plus valentines and anniversary. Jerry wants to go Italian. I don't know what I can have in an Italian restaurant. We'll see. I'd rather just stay home and eat...I shopped for another sparkspeople recipe! Could be interesting...just kidding. Dill chicken should be a safe bet.

Cold here today but the sun should be out. Still doing laundry but I will not complain...I'm able to do it without traveling to the laundry mat. Thanks for the reality check Debbie. I hope that your septic problem can be cleared up quick. And by the time help arrives aren't you ready to just whip out the checkbook and say "fix it" no matter what the price? I would be like that. Good luck.

Everyone have a great morning.

It's been a lazy weekend. It's been cloudy, windy and a little on the cool side. Unlike being up north we never turn any heat on through the winter so we just wear fleece pajamas and lay around with a blanket. If that don't make you sorry I don't know what will. My weakness is pizza so I went to the health food store and bought some SF pizza sauce, some mushrooms, black olives, ground chuck and cheese. I put all this on the Ezekial English muffins. It was sooo good! I am so happy to know I can have a good pizza meal while everyone else is pigging out on Papa John's. I had a sweet tooth yesterday and stopped by Target and got a box of no sugar atkins bars. It is a good snack when I want something chocolate. I went to my mother in laws house last night and was nervous about what she would cook. She had ham and all the fixings to make wraps out of flat bread. I had brought a box of rice crackers to snack on so I just made a salad out of mine and ate my crackers with it. This is truly going to be a lifestyle for me. It is not hard as long as you keep food on hand. I am not the best at drinking water so I have two 24 oz bottles of water I put on the top shelf in the refridge and I make myself (try) to finish them off before I go to bed plus I drink two glasses of green tea and of course my cup of coffee in the morning. I do make a lot of trips to the bathroom. I am so amazed that even when I cook my husband sweets I have no trouble resisting them.

Everything is starting to bloom down here and my husband and I are having a sneezing contest. Connie I have thrown out a few recipes too. You don't know till you try. WOW Bronwyn, I hope our bread don't go up. I haven't bought the raisen bread but the regular Ezekial is $3.99. By the way, Bronwyn, You sound like you have come so far from where you were last year. Everyone on here are so incouraging. Have a great rest of the day!

Angie, where do you live? I weighed in on Saturday and was down to 176. I credit the salmon salad on lettuce that I ate for 2 suppers last week. It is 23 degrees tonight in Missouri. Went to a church function on Friday night. 1000 women at a tea party. Each church member decorated a table for 8 with their best china. Sharon Daugherty was the featured speaker. She is on Christian tv with her husband Billy Joe. It was so fun to walk around the building and see how all the tables were decorated. The church furnished a small cake for each table and each hostess made special food for her table. Ours had little spiral things from Sam's club with bacon and cheese in them, tiny Brownie bites, and fresh strawberries. I concentrated on my hot tea and the strawberries.

Another day of NFNS. I have also been recording on Sparks People. The report for today show I am a little high in calories about 100 calories over, my fat, carbs and protein are all in the right range.

Good luck tomorrow with the estimate on your septic field Debbie.

How about the challenge of another week of NFNS and at least 2 days of doing 30 minutes of exercise!?!??!?
