You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

This is a chicken recipe I got from a weight loss news letter that comes for my husband. I haven't tried it but it looks good and meets all of our requirements.

Bird of Paradise

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate
1.5 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
½ cup chopped parsley
1/3 cup whole grain mustard
10 sprigs fresh thyme leaves
1 4- to 6-lb. chicken
salt and pepper to taste
½ medium shallot
½ fresh orange, cut in two pieces

½ small mango pureed in blender

½ fresh lime, cut into 2 pieces
1 cup of pomegranate juice (read how to make a cup near the bottom)

Preparation:

Make glaze by combining pomegranate juice, orange juice, mango, vinegar, parsley and mustard and half of the fresh thyme, leaves only. Mix well!

Rinse chicken; pat dry. Place on a roasting rack in a shallow pan; sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Use half of the glaze mixture to coat the chicken.

Place remaining thyme leaves with shallots and orange parts, over the chicken.

Cover the chicken “loosely” with foil and roast for 30 minutes at 350°F.

Remove foil and coat chicken with the remaining glaze.

Increase oven temperature to 375°F and continue to bake.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until a meat thermometer in the thigh of the chicken reads 165°F and juices run clear.

***For 1 cup of juice, cut 2—3 pomegranates in half and juice them with a citrus reamer or juicer. Pour the mixture through a cheesecloth-lined strainer or sieve. Set the juice aside

Kathleen...I hope you are smiling from ear to ear from your weigh in news! I'm smiling for ya that's for sure! I know your clothes are much loser and your stomach is feeling tighter and that feels great. Keep it up, your well on your way to where you want to be.

Bronwyn, sounds like you are really onto something with the way you are calculating calories and fat intake. I don't know if I would have the patience to do that but you obviously do. Measurements like that are what weight loss centers figure out before people walk through the door. You now know all the secrets of the weight loss world!!!!

Hilda, were all the ladies at the tea party church members? If so, that is a big church! We had a tea party at ours once too. Much smaller though. Good job saying NFNS and good job on your weigh in.

Debbie, good luck with the septic news. We are all hoping it's nothing major or expensive.

Today is my birthday...the "big 50!" And I am so thankful for NFNS, it's the best present I could have received. This morning I weighed in at 143.8. Nice. I always remember the last time I dieted my weight down. I starved and made it down to 153. I was happy because I could squeeze into "the jeans," (but they probably looked ridiculous on me) and grumpy because I was hungry. This way is so much better. I still wear "the jeans" on occasion, but they are so loose they slide down all the time. I've stopped charting my weight loss because it's so slow and I really don't care if I lose anymore. I'm in a size 10 and happy with it. I plan on being NFNS all week and I'll think about the exercise, maybe dancing in the living room. I could handle that.

Later, fine ladies of NFNS.

Happy Birthday Happy Birthday Happy Birthday!!!!!!
I'll be 45 in June so I'm not too far behind you. Weight wise? I'm light years behind you. I'm tired of looking at the chocolate cake on the table so I put it on the diningroom table with a towel over it so I can't see it.
Steve realized the April Air Humidifier has been running a lot. That may have contributed to the problem with the septic. We have a guy coming out today sometime. I've been told something as small as a leaky toilet can create problems with your septic. We'll get more info today. I'm just glad waters not coming into the house.

Here is to being NFNS.

I think I will go shopping...that can be my work out! :P
I am glad to nfns!
Happy Birthday Connie. My husband will be 50 on Thursday! I am going to try and find Lactose Free/Sugar Free ice cream, make some nfns peanut butter cookies, crumble them in the softened ice cream and refreeze in cake form for his birthday.
Debbie, throw that cake away!! Why have the temptation?
Apple, raisins and cinnamon raisin Ezek bread. Still $3.99 at Trader Joe's.

Had a yummy breakfast. Decided to combine 2 cereals. 1/4 cup of Uncle Sam's Toasted Whole Wheat Flakes & Flaxseed with 1/4 cup of Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted whole grain cereal Cinnamon Raisin. Added 1 packet of Splenda and milk. Less than 190 calories because a serving of the Uncle Sam's is usually 3/4 cup. Both are 190 per serving. I thought they tasted better together than separately, and it will make the more expensive Ezekiel cereal from the Health Food store last longer.

Happy Birthday Connie. I will have my 60th in August. I plan to look GOOD! Glad you are feeling so good on your 50th.

The tea party was an outreach to ladies who might not ordinarily go to church, but a chance for them to hear that Jesus loves them. Last year they said 70 women either were saved or rededicated their lives. A lot of churches here are doing the tea parties. There were 2 soloists who sang. It was such a big room they had the stage in the center. The speaker had to keep rotating to face different parts of the room. It could sure be done on a smaller scale. Fun to see ladies from different churches and a lot of Red Hat ladies came, too. They charged $10 a ticket to rent the building and pay the speaker to come. My church has a tea party at Christmas connected with a home tour of decorated homes. All the dishes are alike for that one, and all tables decorated the same.

Hilda, your tea party sounds so great. I once served on a committee at church for community outreach. I called random phone numbers in our area and asked if they attended church, if so, what denomination, and if not, why. Over and over people said they didn't own the right clothes to wear. I was stunned. Our little community really needed a casual service. It sure was an eye opener. The minister we had at the time moved on to Memphis and opened a new church...a very casual one. Maybe one day we will get one here. There certainly is a need.

You will look awesome on your 60th! Sixty is the new 50!

Ironing and vet appt today. Tomorrow I'll be a birthday bum, today too much to do.

Happy birthday Connie. What a wonderful thing to have your momentous 50th birthday wearing a size 10 and it sounds like maybe almost an 8. You are really moving into maintenance at this point.........congratulations you are the NFNS star but we are all behind you and planning on joining you.

I continue to have little success at the scales and I am thinking I really need to stay off of them for a while and do like Kathleen does. Kathleen that is so exciting that you are doing so well.

Hilda by August you will be just where you want to be for your birthday. My birthday is in August as well and I hope to be able to celebrate some decent weight loss by my birthday.

Hershey's sf chocolates with caramel in them
sf hot chocolate
corn chips
fritos
fruit smoothies, with and without sf cool whip
sf hard candies: Jolly Ranchers, Baskin robins, lifesaver
ate at Applebee's twice and had the steak dinner
Mimi's cafe for Valentine's day: omlette with hashbrowns!

Triscuit lovers: Fire Roasted Tomato and Olive Oil
These are awesome alone, and with parmesan ranch Kaukauna cheese!

Just made a pizza with Ezekiel spouted grain tortilla. They come 6 to a package. Lined a cookie sheet with foil, put shredded cheese, leftover turkey, and salsa on the tortilla and baked it at 400 for 8 minutes. 150 calories in the tortilla. Very tasty.

Kathleen, you are doing great. Think how much you can have off in a year!

I am going to Cracker Barrel tonight with a friend. Ordering the kids meal 3 pc grilled Chicken teriyaki, side salad with bleu cheese dressing and diet coke, no crackers with the salad. Hmm, I could take my own triscuits, couldn't I?

Happy Birthday Connie! I'll see your 50 in a couple of years. Turned 48 in January. Congratulations to everyone doing so well NFNS. I chopped up some ham in mixed steamed vegetable with some lemon pepper and omega three mayo. I cleaned out the refridge and we just ate leftovers. Hilda I live in Clearwater, Florida. It was comfortable here today but still windy. The squirrels dug out some of my plants today so I have got to replant tomorrow. They are a lot of fun to watch but can be a pain when it comes to plants.

Hilda the tea party is a great idea. I don't know if your church has anything for men but ours does a wild game supper. They have a speaker and serve every kind of wild game you can imagine. They have beef and pork too for those like my husband that don't want anything that don't come out of the grocery store. It is a great outreach and many come back to church regularly.

I am so upset about this stock market. My Mother and Father have almost lost all their retirement and now their money is so low they don't know whether to pull it out or hope for a recovery. It is a sad world we are living in right now. It would be nice if we The Church could lift our voices a little higher. I don't know what the answer is but I hope things will turn around soon.

Everyone keep up the good work!

Angie, I'm so sad for your parents plight. I read the other day about a 90 year old gentleman that had to go back to work. He lost his money in the Madoff scam, but no money is...no money. I hope everything works out for them. This country is never going to be the same. In the big scope of things, I don't know if that's good or bad, but I do believe this has been coming on for quite awhile. I have spent my inheritance paying off our debts. That's not what I wanted to do with it, but it needed to be done. It does feel good. Our parents knew a lot more about money management than our generation. That's why it's so sad to see the conservative ones cleaned out. We still have debt, maybe I can wipe it out in a couple of years. We all need to be credit card free.

I'm having Mexican beans and rice for dinner. Jerry's bringing it home. I'm going to spend the evening in my pj's reading. Now that's a birthday treat! My neighbor has been on this diet and has lost 12 lbs. He is very obese and has lot's of health problems so this is wonderful for him. His doctor wants him to lose 45 lbs by Aug. He's losing a lot just by staying away from beer. I wish him much success. I'm going to pick him up some Ezek bread this week. He is retired and would not spend the money on it but I want him to try it. His success has prompted my other neighbor to try it. I went to buy some plain rice cakes the other day and they were sold out. Wow! I think maybe our town is catching on. I know I have spread the word about NFNS at every opportunity.

Everyone have a great evening!

I became a fain of quinoa tonight!! Cooked it in chicken brother and spooned over it the stir fried veggies w/oregano and ginger. Zucchini, mushrooms, red/yellow/green peppers, garlic and shrimp!
I hated to lose the couscous, but I like the quinoa even better!!

nfns peanut butter cookies. Anyone try them. They are awesome and easy:
1 cup peanut butter (natural crunchy is what I used)
1 1/3 cup of splenda
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla.

Mix, roll into ball shape the size of a walnut. Criss/cross with fork dipped in splenda and bake for 12 mins @ 350 degrees.

Kathleen you crack me up. I had not even noticed the typos until I read your second entry. I know I have typos all over the place and on a re-read they can be quite funny, really!!!! Have you ever seen that e-mail that has gone around several times full of words that have letters missing. It shows how the brain works.......we know what the word is even when letters are missing maybe it added letters as well, can't remember but amazingly you could easier read it although it was so incorrect.

Okay this is how I roll.......I can't get my mind organized for my class nor my house organized.......I am such a procrastinator. I actually have lots of information and done a lot of reading and experimenting but I need to pull it all together. I am going to try it with the quinoa. I want to try those cookies soon. I noticed the typos and thought it was funnier reading your corrections.
Bronwyn: I have seen that email too, it is amazing. I have had people over for the last two Sunday's and for the next 5, so I have to keep up on my house. I am kind of glad though. I can't believe how dusty things get in a week. A six lane highway backs up to our house, I think that is where a lot of the dust comes from. It isn't a freeway, it has lights on it.
Hilda: I used the same tortillas you used for lunch today and it tasted good. I made a "taco" pizza. The bad news is I think the tortilla upset my tummy.
Talk to you all later.

My stomach did not get upset at all from the pizza I made from the tortilla. That is the one thing I love about this NFNS. I do not have any stomach problems, ever.

The same church that has the tea party has the wild game feast for the men once a year.

I think every married person, or person thinking of getting married should watch the Fireproof movie. i am kind of the opinion that you should watch it alone. so you can really concentrate on letting God speak to you. I was at Barnes and Noble tonight and looked at the Love Dare book. Day One is not saying anything negative to your spouse.
I am going to try not saying anything negative to anyone, since I am single.

The Negativity Police
Is your inner voice a trash-talker? If you've tried and failed to reach your fitness goals in the past, negative thoughts might have been what held you back. Want to succeed this time? Get your journal (or log on to your online Fitness Diary). It's time to get some of those thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do you have a negative self-image?
Do you constantly say things like "I'm fat" or "I'm ugly"? Do you pick yourself apart and beat yourself up when you look in the mirror?

2. Do you lack self-confidence?
Do you doubt your ability to achieve your goals, weight-related or otherwise? Do you dwell on your perceived limits or fears? Do you doubt your ability to accomplish the things you want to accomplish?

3. Do you feel powerless?
Do you feel as if you have no control over your life, or do you rely on excuses like "I'm genetically predisposed to being overweight"?

4. Do you label yourself in self-deprecating ways?
Do you think and talk about your failure to lose weight as a foregone conclusion? Do you refer to yourself mockingly (or not!) as a stereotype — the happy/funny fat person in the room? Is your e-mail address "fatso@blank.com"?

Now think about your responses. How would you describe the tone of your answers? Are they affirming and constructive, or downbeat and destructive? Want to turn your thinking around? The following question will help you understand why you have been propagating these destructive thoughts and behaviors so that we can cut them out at the root.

5. How is this negativity hurting you?
Is what you say about yourself really the truth? Or is it a defense mechanism? And if so, against what? Are you just making complicated excuses? How does this kind of negativity help you achieve your goals? The answers to these questions should help you start to see what's at the root of your negative thinking.

Now go back and answer the five questions again, and force yourself to use only positive terms. It can be hard to let go of these negative thought patterns. Often, they're the result of years of self-loathing and your internalizing of the negative opinions and judgments of others, but you can do it. Remember, knowledge is power. Next time one of those negative thoughts crops up, you'll have the awareness to cut it down.

I made the chicken yesterday but I didn't have all the ingredients and I used the crock pot, then later browned the chicken. It turned out good but not like the intended idea I'm sure.

This negetivity police artical came in the mail today. I thought I would share it. It's from the Biggest Loser email. Jillian. Do you watch that, anyone?
I want to post my weight but I just can't bring myself to do it. I've gained weight. Not over 200 yet but close. I don't want to be negative about it so I'll just say that I am so happy and glad not to be to 200! :o) My goal is to lose just 10 pounds. Anyone can lose 10 pounds right? RIGHT! On my mark, get set, GO!~

What will this day be like? I wonder. What will my future be? I wonder. It could be so exciting to be thin in the world, to be free. My heart should be wildly rejoicing, so what's the matter with me?

Nothing!!!! I CAN do it. So can you..................

The peanut butter cookies are pretty intense in their consistency, so I really could only eat 2 at a time, and they are smaller than 1/2 dollars. The recipe only makes 3 dozen or less and I have 14 left. Family ate some and I gave 5 to son's girlfriend for her family to try. I had 6 total.
And the remainder in a plastic baggie. I am going to thaw lactose free icecream and stir in the cookies choc syrup and refreeze for a birthday treat for hubby. The icecream has sugar so I won't indulge, but I will have something. Husband and boys will enjoy!

Kathleen, yummy.
The only reason we had chocolate cake in the house the other day was because my husband and daughter made it from scratch. I couldn't intervien as they were having some bonding time together. So I ended up being tortured for a couple day until it dissapeared. I can't resist cake or chocolate chip cookies.

I've been walking around the house like a zombie. It's not that I don't have things to do. I have too much to do and I don't know where to start.

As for the septic. We had it pumped and will just wait to see what happens. I got some tips on how to be more user friendly to a septic system so I hope we won't have anymore trouble. Only time will tell. It was less than 200.00.

Morning all. I'm drinking my coffee and loving it. Today is my only day this week to relax and not hit the ground running. I am going to enjoy the heck out of it!

Debbie...Hang in there...don't give up. In some ways our lives are very different, in others, similar. I know you have to have forbidden foods around for your family...I don't. Well, sometimes I do but then I make them hide it. Literally. They can put the sweets somewhere in their bedrooms out of sight and out of mind. If it was sitting on the table I would tear into it in the middle of the night. I think it's important you focus on one thing...what you put into your mouth. In a world where you can control so little, you can control that. YOU HAVE ABSOLUTE CONTROL OF WHAT YOU OUT IN YOUR MOUTH!!!!! I know life goes on and decisions have to made and family has to be dealt with...but right now is the time for you to be able to concentrate on your eating habits. I's not only ok to put yourself first for this...it's absolutely necessary. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL...YOU HAVE TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST FOR AWHILE.
You have to give up the things that are working against you for awhile. Stay away from the beer, the sweets, the snacking. It is not impossible..you can do it.

Bronwyn, I have found when facing complicated situations I have to list everything on paper and then give them a time slot to be done. List everything. I can follow a list. I always perform better at last minute as a rule, but sometimes I need more time. Good luck...I'm sure it will all come out fine.

We never did go out to dinner the other night. I was glad, I don't know what I would have ate in an Italian restaurant. I'm not worried about weight gain, it's the stomach ache I don't want. So last night I asked for mexican. And I got it! Rice and beans with a bit of white cheese dip and salsa mixed in. No chips. Very satisfying and easy on the digestive system.

Everyone have a great NFNS day.

Thanks Bronwyn. That is the kind of tortilla I had yesterday when I had stomach problems. I liked it at the time. Good job on the food tracking. It is amazing how much we really can eat isn't it?

Finishing up another NFNS day. It's easy! My sister called today. She has always been one of the thinnest of us girls. Probably a size 7 most of her life. In the last couple of years she has been gaining. She asked me today about NFNS and then she asked when I thought I would go off it. I had a hard time explaining to her that it is forever and not a hardship at all. She took some notes so maybe she'll give it a go. She loves pasta. I told her about the rice pasta and I hope she'll try some.

I'm in for the long, long haul.

Nice loss there K10! Keep it up.
That total number is what is motivating me!
1st hamburger on a bun in over 8 weeks... actually a turkey burger on an Ezekiel bun! it was very good. And filling.

I agree with Connie, in it for the long haul.
It is not a diet, it is a lifestyle!
Good night all.

Does anyone know of a peanut butter with only the ingredients peanuts and salt?I made myself another "pizza" tonight. I am wondering if Ezekiel cereal and a tortilla on the same day is too much. Tea is very healthy. Some say we should drink 5 cups a day. I think you would enjoy the fruit flavored ones or camomile with Splenda. Maybe make it weak. I don't let mine steep too long. Try something different. I was served my hot Earl Grey tea with half and half at a restaurant recently. I had never tried it with half and half and it was delicious.

Hilda: The peanut butter I buy is Laura Scudders Old Fashioned Peanut Butter. Peanuts and salt are the only ingredients. I don't know if you have Trader Joe's near you, but they have the same type of peanut butter. I was even buying an organic one at Costco. That has been a while ago now. I hope you find it. I think the tortilla is too much grain for me or something.

Good morning everyone. I know what everyone means about NFNS being a lifestyle. I find myself craving more fruits which is something I hardly ever ate before. I am cooking spaghetti for my husband tonight and I am going to have spaghetti squash with smart balance butter and parmesean cheese. One of my favorite dishes. I had two apples and two tablespoons of SF peanut butter with truvia last night. I am amazed at how filling this is and how it satisfies my sweet toothe but I never feel any effect from it this next morning. It is nice to enjoy what you are eating and not gain weight.

I have natural blond hair and it is very fine and thin. I went to my beautician Monday and she said she could not get over the difference in my hair. She said there was less breakage and it was much thicker and healthier looking. I was happy. She is 29 and wanted to know all about my diet.

I buy the smuckers natural peanut butter but it does have 1 gram of sugar for two tlbs. I will try to find sugar free at the health food store. The large jar is $4.29. What I have seen at the health store is a lot higher so I decided to put up with the 1 gram.

Bronwyn I am glad you mentioned hummus. I need to add that to my grocery list. Everyone please say a quick little prayer that the DOW will continue to go back up. Daddy has worked so hard all his life and is still working at 76. It's sad to see people just lose everything they have worked so hard for.

Everyone have a great day and stay NFNS.

Knowing your calorie count is such a gpood thing when you aren't losing.
I was trying to remember how diligent I was at the beginning when I was losing. I really paid attention to every detail. When I stopped doing that I stopped losing. The small things really add up.

Has anyone heard of a Bible Study called "The Lord's Table"? I just got an email that they are starting a class at my church and there is a book for $17. I bought one of those baking potatoes that are wrapped in the plastic that you microwave for 8 minutes. So covenient. I cooked it and peeled it and cut it into chunks and added it to a can of Bush's Cut Green and Shelley beans that I had cooked in some of the beef soup base. It was really tasty.

A friend came by today and was surprised at my weight loss. She is a couple of years younger than me, skinny as a rail and now a diabetic. Our food conversation was pretty analytical. We are both eating better than we ever have. And we both wish we had started eating better years ago.

Connie isn't that just the thing that is so maddening......why didn't we eat this way for years, forever. I know I would not have some of the problems I have now if I had started this style of eating many years ago before I got into the whole weight gain/ overwhelmed and frustrated eater/dieter style of eating. I am sure I would not have the trouble with my knees and feet that I now have....because they would not have been packing around a whole bunch of extra weight. Mind you your thin friend is dealing with health issues but maybe that is genetic and maybe it has been enhanced by poor eating.

I found a bread for my class today that is amazing. It is so moist and yummy and has an unbelievable shelf life of 1 year. It is way better than Ezekial or Silver Hills. It doesn't have any sugar in it and it is classified as a cereal bread so the grains are whole not flour all except the rye (shoot there is a small amount of rye flour.....I honestly think that isn't an issue). It doesn't have to be toasted to be good and it doesn't need a bunch of stuff on it to be good. It doesn't have to be frozen either. You could carry this with you in the day with some cheese as an emergency snack....overall though I would keep in the fridge not in my purse like you may do with you cashews Connie. The brand is Mestmacher/ Organic Three Grain with no perservatives. I love the fact that it is truly one of those emergency storage items that is also very edible. As you can guess it isn't cheap but hey, neither is Ezekial (at least not here). This is a heavy, dense yet moist bread that is very filling. An open face tuna sandwich on this would be yummy!!! Anyways this is one of the discoveries I made in searching for emergency food items and I was impressed and thought I would share. K10 I don't think you should try it....it sounds to me like you don't do well with grains......mind you there is no wheat so maybe that would work for you.

Hilda I read the same article on bananas and then I immediately made myself a yummy sugar free smoothie with some bananas smile

Bronwyn: I wish I would have been eating this way longer as well. The one thing I notice is, that my face has been clearer since giving up Pepsi and eating this way. I would have problems with large/deep pimples on my chin. Of course, they weren't on my forehead where I could hide them.
My first night of not eating after 8 p.m. So far so good. I ate a little more at dinner than I was really hungry for, knowing I really want to succeed at this. I just got home from church, so that has helped I am sure.

Debbie...I am so frustrated that your husband, unknowingly I'm sure, is sabotaging your efforts! Good grief. The first thing that came to my mind is I would offer to subject him to a behavior he abhors and see what he thinks about it. I'm not trying to be catty, I just don't think he realizes the position he puts you in and if he knew what it felt like to be in your shoes, maybe he would understand and keep the sweets away from you. For instance, if someone I know was trying to quit smoking I would not light up in front of them. You only need to get some NFNS time under your belt, with out interruptions, and you will be good to go.

Today I weighed in at 143.4. I really, really thought I would show a gain, but instead, a small loss. I ate like crazy yesterday. But everything was NFNS. I'm seven months into NFNS and down 45 lbs, and still losing. It can happen for all of us, it just takes not cheating and time. Have any of you seen the news this morning? On CNN and on my home page..."diet secret revealed"...and it is...fewer calories over time!!!!

Today I see the dermatologist about spider veins and a few other concerns. I hope to make my appt for the actual vein removal for the week of the 15th. A friend wants to accompany me but I don't want to wait that long. We'll see. Patience is not my strong suit. My friend also asked it I would be interested in walking with her. Finally, someone to walk with.

Bronwyn, good job on your class. I'm sure everyone thought it was a hit. You seem to be a natural instructor.

Connie I have a little patch on my cheek under my eye that is about the size of a pencil eraser of broken capillaries and I called two doctors. One was going to charge me $120.00 just for a consultation and the other said $200.00 for a laser treatment. I think I can live with my red patch. I thought they could just do a saline shot and it would dry them up. Everything is so expensive. Keep us updated on how yours goes.

Connie: Way to go on the weight loss. I am so proud of you.

Debbie M: If you can give up all soda I would. When I quit drinking Pepsi, I didn't substitute it with anything but water. I do have 100% orange or grape juice throughout the week, but not everyday. I only have about 8 ounces or so. I only use Splenda on occasion. There has to be a reason that the bigger the people are the more diet soda they seem to drink? Look at where we all got with low-fat/low-sugar foods.

I really try to not buy things with sugar, but I did buy bacon for breakfast this weekend. Sugar is the third or fourth ingredient though. I found out the Swanson's canned chicken broth I have has sugar and dextrose in it. Ugh! I am frustrated about that, because that is the kind they sell in bulk at Sams Club. Does anyone have a quick, easy, and cheap idea for chicken broth without sugar? Or should I just keep using it? I use it to cook my quinoa in and to make soups.

Good morning..... Connie you seem to lose weight so easily. You will eat more than you thought you should and still lose weight. I am not finding that I lose weight little lone easily. I also am very impatient with the whole process. I am sticking with it for the long haul and some way, some time and some how I do think I will be down some what. How was that last sentence for incredibly optimism (not) smile I also know and have said several times that I need to stay off the scales.....I have a hard time doing that. Because I lose so slowly weighing often is such a bad idea and so frustrating. I guess I will need to lower my calories. I eat so healthy and I eat NFNS but maybe I eat too uch...shoot!!!!

Debbie metabolic syndrome will make it more difficult to lose weight and may require some healing before you really lose. That is what Dr. Swarchzbein says........

Well I just got my youngest sons midterm grades......(first semester at Univeristy).......I think he is having a little too much fun and not enough working on school time.........we simply can't afford to send him to school if he isn't going to work. Bronwyn: It does seem like the more the parents' pay for things the more slack the kids seem to be. I was an example of that. I dropped classes and didn't apply myself. Some kids just always want to please though. I probably would have been enjoying the freedom too much if I was away at college. I hope you can get through to him. I will be there soon. Not for three and a half years but that goes so fast. As far as the weighing goes. If you can do it, maybe wait longer between weigh-ins.

Bronwyn, I really and truly mean it when I say be very very firm about the college situation. And then stick to your guns. I knew before Holly went to school she was a handful. If you haven't experienced that before now, take heart, you will probably be able to fix it immediately. I am convinced your metabolism is the reason you are feeling stalled. And for some reason I am equally convinced it's temporary. It may take longer for your body to start losing than others, but eventually your body will "click" and it will happen. I'm sorry it's working out that way. What was in those shots you used to get?

K10, I so agree with you on the diet soda. My mom drinks them all the time and she is overweight. Water really is more satisfying, it just takes time to make the switch. I always have water with me...always. I've left bottles all over town. Rachel Rays broths are sugar free. I get them at Wal Mart. I think we are going to ingest some scant sugar no matter what. Bacon once in a while is fine. Good job not eating last night! Late calories are said to be the worst.

I went to the dermatologist. They can't do my legs until May 26th! I was so bummed. The lady said if they have any cancellations she would call me first. Let's all hope. I have to wear support pantyhose for 3 days after and it will be very warm by then. Geez, I hope someone cancels.

Debbie, I would love to meet you on my way to Mi, but we will probably fly. What a fun idea. We should all reach our goal weights and have a reunion. The first Dr Gotts success reunion! Hmmmm. We could really do that you know. We are going to a family reunion in Shelbyville this summer, but that is probably a trek for you. I'll keep you posted.

Connie this is the child I worry about the most. He is a really smart boy but he also has a learning disablity......which wouldn't cause that many problems for him if he was motivated. He is a good kid but a frustrating kid. I worried about how he would do because we have had to really keep on top of him for him to get things done. He is actually doing well in some classes but then there is one D+ and one F......the good grades are a B, and 2 A.s The bad grades are in classes he isn't interested in but it doesn't matter.....they are classes he has to do. His Dad called him today and assured him that he has only one semester to prove he should have the opportunity to go to school. I hope he will take this seriously and get that F and D+ taken care of by the end of the semester. I a trying to acknowledge the good grades as well.....

I fooled around with some left over quinoa (a fabulously healthy grain) and made a sugar free pudding I really enjoyed......this is what I did: 1 1/2 cups cooked quinoa (google for instructions), 1/4 toasted unsweetened coconut flakes. 4 whole large dates. 1 1/2 oz. toasted pecans, 1/2 cup coconut lite milk, 1/2 to 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 egg, 2 tsp. good quality vanilla. Toast and chop the pecans......grease 4 ramekins and shake about half of the nuts into the greased ramekins. Mix all the other ingredients together .....chop the dates and use the remaining nuts. Makes a nice thick mixture.....pour into the ramekins and sprinkle lightly with nutmeg and bake at 350 for about 25 minutes or until set. I topped with 1/4 cup of plain yoghurt and 1/2 banana with a little stevia and cinnamon.

Bronwyn, I have a lot of concerns for my daughter too. She is extremely gifted, but her maturity level is very low. It's hard to describe. When she was little, she seemed more mature than her peers. She just was kind of in her own world. Now, her peers have evolved and she is just kind of still in her own world, as if she hasn't changed much. Of course I see instances when she does act her age but generally she is somewhat oblivious of social undercurrents. She will not be bothered with things that she doesn't want to be bothered with no matter what it is or who is telling her to do it. That pretty much describes her. Fortunately, most of the time she wants the same things everyone else does when everyone else wants it. But no matter how much accountability we force on her, she seems to slip and slide through life. Oh well, we'll keep trying to grow her up! Wow, that felt good to say! Thanks for listening. I should add, when discussing her with my family members they usually laugh. She has charmed them all.

Your dessert sounds amazing. The ingredients alone are impressive. I'm still eating the figs and feeling very happy about it.

K10, knocking out any calories will help big time over time. Some days I eat very little. It seems to come in spurts. I'll go awhile completely tired of food and uninterested and eating little. And then I seem to make up for it by being hungry and satisfying that urge on a big scale. I've been in the hungry category for several days. When I get like that I love everything. Like figs...and mexican food...and whatever else. Hopefully I'll calm down about food again soon.

Do you live near a Target? I wonder if they have Rachel Ray broth. Where do you grocery shop?

It's been a full day. I am thankful for it.

Connie: Add vanilla and Splenda to the yogurt too. I have eaten it with fruit and Uncle Sam cereal as kind of a granola topping. I think I have seen the broth. I shop at a lot of places. The grocery store nearest to me is Vons aka Safeway. I get my milk and other things at Smart N Final. It is like a small club store (Sams Club or Costco). I shop at Sam's Club, Wal Mart and Trader Joe's. I live within 1-2 miles of all the stores I mentioned except Trader Joe's, it is about 4 miles away. Our Wal Mart doesn't have any produce. It does have some dairy, breads, frozen food, chips and drinks. They now sell wine and beer. The grocery stores around here don't want WalMart to be a grocery center. There are places in California that do have the full grocery, but not near me.
Kathleen: I made the peanut butter cookies tonight. They are a good substitute for sure. I was wondering if I added another egg and decreased the amount of Splenda what would happen?
I made a "pizza" tonight from the Suzanne Somers cookbook I have. The crust is made with cream cheese, eggs and parmesan. You bake it and then add sauce, cheese and toppings. It is good.
Twenty minutes until I have to stop eating. We just had dinner and cookies (2), so I am not hungry. I am making myself accountable to lots of people so I can be motivated.

Connie your daughter and my son sound similar in many respects. We could never motivate him with things our other kids were motivated by..... taking away privileges, getting upset, reasoning, and money meant nothing to him for motivation although spending money has been a favourite habit of his. He is a really nice kid in the fact that he is caring and kind but, he he doesn't get reality very well. He spends way too much time living in a world of video games and fantasy type novels..... just lacks some connection with the realities of this world. We don't know how he will ever be able to function in the real world.

The T.V. was on in the background and there was one doom and gloom report after another......I had to go and turn it off before I went screaming out of the house like a woman who has just lost her mind,,,,,easier to do than lose weightsmile (it is really cold tonight so I certainly don't want to be irrational with such behaviours smile

I keep going over my calorie allotment on Sparks People by about 100-150 calories.......my goodness do those calories ever add up frown Sparks give me a calorie allotment of something like 1200-1600. The other on-line program had said I could have something like 2100 calories...I thought??? I knew that large amount of calories would not result in any weight loss I am at the high end and over on the 1600 and I think it is too much for weight loss. Does anyone else have any idea about how many calories they are eating a day. Like the quinoa pudding I mentioned.....I ate that as a meal not a dessert. I feel I am eating very much in control and good choices but alas....those darn calories.

Connie......plain yoghurt is an acquired taste......but don't get fat free.....that is so sour and gross. I like a thick creamy plain yoghurt. I like natural yoghurts......no thickening agents......greek style yoghurts. The difference in calories is not that significant but the difference in taste is significant. Mash a banana into it, chop up some dates, use stevia, sugar free cherries are the lower calorie option for making it good. I have to admit I don't have to put much in it to enjoy it.....when it is thick and creamy. A fat free yoghurt that is poor yoghurt can't have enough added to it to make it nice and yummy.

Morning. I had an interesting conversation with my gluten intolerant sister last night. Of course she is already eating very well and has now given up dairy. It causes her problems. So she tried a soy shredded cheese product and she said she really liked it. I'm thinking maybe I should try a soy cheese alternative, just for some things. I'm wondering if that would save me some fat and calories. Are any of you using soy cheese products? Are they good? Next week I'm going to the biggest health food store in Memphis and I'm hoping to find some of the things you guys talk about.

One of my sisters has always held that she could never lose weight on 1200 calories. And when she is ready to lose weight, she always does. But she has never been more that 10-15 lbs over her goal. So she probably shoots for 1000 calories a day. The foods we are eating are all nutritious, more calorie dense, so we have to eat less. It's just an adjustment, don't you think? When I started NFNS I sometimes had to tell myself "I've ate...it's enough." I knew I had consumed the calories so if I was still feeling a bit hungry I had some water and the feeling passed.

I surprisingly and unexpectedly have the day off! What to do!!!! Rainy here today...I guess I could do some more ironing...there's always that.

Great morning all.

Bronwyn, I think the 2100 calories is the amount you could eat to maintain your current weight. I would shoot for around 1200 to 1500 calories if I were counting. You know I'm going to visit that site today and see where I am.
I had a big breakfast today. I drank a small can of V-8 Bold and spicy. Had two eggs over easy and two pieces Eziek toast with a bit of cream cheese. I wonder how many calories that was.

Dried cherries and figs, hmmm. I am going to try the regular plain yogurt.

Bronwyn, there is no hiding claories, this is going to be eye opening for me.

Ok, I just editited my breakfast. I changed my bread from whole grain to Eziek. And my cream cheese amount. Now my calories are 433. Better but not by a lot. This is going to be very interesting. I think I am going to love sparkpeople.

I just made our dinner. Hubby asked for this ground beef soup/stew thing I make in the crock pot. I'm not sure how I will enter this in the calorie counter tonight. It has browned ground beef, onion, celery, potatos, peas and carrots in it with various seasonings and a packet of brown gravy mix.

Every time I opened the cupboard for something I saw something I wanted to put into my mouth but I didn't do it. My cravings are so crazy right now, I'm sure because of all the sugar I've had lately. I had a bunch of celery. It only added up to 8 calories. I think I just wanted to munch munch crunch crunch. It worked and didn't cost an arm and a leg in calories. I'll need to get more at the store today. Being prepared with things we can eat is so important.

Debbie it really is a shock when you start to add the calories up. I used to count calories but I haven't done that for years and the whole concept of how many calories were in what I was eating just was out of whack. Debbie you can enter all the ingredients for your stew (I will have to go back and look where to do that so you can save it) and then you will know the calories for the whole stew then when you enter it on the food you ate for the day you put in a serving......like .25 of the stew or whatever. I did this with my quinoa date pudding so now it is stored in my info and today when I had it I just clicked into my favourites and moved it into "what I ate today".....all I entered was the calories but I am okay with just looking at the calories for a while. Now I have really slowed down on my nut consumption because it had a drastic impact on me to see the calories and fat grams on that little pie chart at the end of the day. Already today I have had 450 calories.....and that was just breakfast. I need to plan better so I can keep those counts down a bit. I definitely will have to start to exercise so I can have a decent number of calories. Without exercise I will probably have to keep my calorie count so low that it won't be sustainable. Sparks people doesn't believe in any of the ideas of dieting like low carb, high protein, combining and so forth but I do think that no flour and no sugar is so helpful in eliminating cravings that it is a must. I actually find for eating out or going to people's houses that no sugar is easier than no flour. Tonight together with friends we are having a home made pizza night......whole wheat crust and good toppings......not sure how to swing the crust deal without making a big deal out it. When you say I am not eating sugar.....that seems to be no big deal but to say you are not eating flour cause people to challenge you.

Bronwyn, I have had the same experience with people when I say NF. For some it seems to be so unbelievable they take it personally! But let them challenge away...in time they will be asking you for advice. Can you take a couple of english muffins and transfer the toppings from the pizza to that. Anyone who would be offended can't be your concern. Your concern is becoming healthy...you have to take care of yourself...no one else is going to do it. If you do not make a big deal of it, maybe they wont either. I'm sure you can make it as pleasant as possible.

I tasted the plain yogurt. It is a lot like sour cream, only with a tartness. I can substitute half of my sour cream servings with yogurt...maybe. I added some to my shake and I loved it! The shake was creamier and tastier.

It really is amazing how fast the calories add up. It really makes me realize how many calories I was eating...no wonder I was a size 16. I earned it bite by bite.

Hi everyone....I have been trying to post something for 2 days now and my computer gets locked up. So instead of posting a link, just go to Youtube for your diet humor.

Do a search for "Before I Eat" by Anita Renfroe.

It is very funny and relatable.

Have a nice weekend everyone. I am going to try to keep up on my calorie counting. Its really helping me. I am up to 900 calories already and I need to eat my super yet. Its been hard. I have gotten used to snacking. Everytime I turn around I have to stop myself from eating something else.

Funny video.....although the acoustics weren't good on my end and I wish I could make out more of what she said.......was the night picture a depiction of your night wanderings Connie (jokes)!

Kim I am glad that I am not crazy.....I think, "what am I doing wrong".....when I try to make a post with a link my link to this blog also shuts down and it will take me two days to get back on. I notice others post links.....any ways sorry for being happy but it is nice to know it isn't just me smile

Debbie the tracking of calories is such a big and good step I think for those of us who struggle to lose weight.

Have a good week-end....I am sure I will be checking in tomorrow........be good to your self and make good choices!

Connie: I will write the recipe as it is in the book.

Cream Cheese Pizza Crust
-1 (8 ounce)package of cream cheese, room temperature (completely room temp.)
-2 eggs
-salt and freshly ground pepper
-1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat over to 350 degrees. Butter (I used Pam type spray) a 9" X 13" baking dish. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, blend together cream cheese and eggs with a wooden spoon. Season with salt and pepper. Add Parmesan cheese and stir until combined. Pour into prepared baking dish. Bake for 17 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cream cheese crust cool for 10 minutes. Raise heat to 400 degrees. Using a 4 inch round cookie cutter, and leaving the cream cheese crust in the baking dish, cut 6 rounds out of the crust, leaving the 6 rounds in place. Top each crust with sauce ( I used NS spaghetti sauce), cheese and toppings. Bake for 8 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly.

I plan on doubling the recipe next time to make the crust thicker and cooking it longer. I just left the crust in the pan, I didn't make the circles it seems like such a waste of food. I had some lumps in mine because the cream cheese wasn't totally room temp., but they melted just fine. The top of it looked kind of like a cheese cake when I first took it out of the oven. Some cracks and bumps etc.

Sorry if I gave too much extra info. I just like to know what things are supposed to look like.

I didn't eat last night after 8. I sure hope I see this change on the scale. I feel really good that I have been able to do this. I think my husband is following along without saying anything.
I bought the Sundried Tomato and Olive Oil Triscuits today. They are good.
I almost cancelled exercising with my friend this morning because I was tired. I didn't get to sleep until after 1 a.m. I wasn't able to get in touch with my friend so I just went and I am glad I did.

Talk to you all later.

I have seen Anita Renfroe at Women of Faith conferences, she does a good job. She was doing the William Tell Overture at the conference in September and realized she resembled Sarah Palin a little and almost messed up.

Good Night all.

Anita Renfroe is so funny. Her 'Dad' song is a riot. Check that out too.
Day 62. Snacking on prunes as I am reading the posts. SF fudgesicles are really satisfying my sweet tooth. Only 40 calories each!! Eating 3 or 4 is only 120-160 calories! I used to eat 2-3 candy bars with no problem: that could be close to 1000 calories and leave me craving more. I am so stuck on this nfns! I came home from a meeting last night and wanted something!! I put apple juice, frozen pineapple, frozen strawberries and frozen sf cool whip in the blender and had an awesome smoothie!!
I am still standing by weighing in once a month. The ups and downs would have thrown me off of this new way of eating long ago. I like the nice solid weight loss number each 4 weeks.
Flurries here in Chicago. Spring will come, spring will come, spring....
Good day to all.
