C'mon girls. Don't you know these photos are air brushed? Yes she has lost weight but where are the stretch marks? She has given birth. YOu don't lose 50 pounds and look that good. there must be some little droopy something somewhere. Every part of her skin is perfect. I have always liked her. |

I had thought she was more on the chunky side when she was a teen ager so I am amazed at how thin she is and how totally perfect her sikin is. It wasn't a candid shot on the beach like you see in National Enquirer......where celebs are all hanging out. |

I was thinking about my son and his challenges (the one who just came home). I was thinking about all kinds of stressful things and none of those things helped in any way with my being able to go to sleep....groan!!!! |

I just had a meatloaf sandwich on Ezekiel bread. Yum! I will eat whatever sounds good for breakfast.
I need to go and make the dressing for my salad tonight. I will talk to you guys later. |

Good for you Bronwyn. Every bit of information will help you figure out what you need to do. Sorry your sleeping continues to be so off. I wish you could sleep later in the day to compensate for being up all night. That would help. Do have your hormone levels checked too. That is the reason for my lack of good sleep. And you too Debbie, try and make that sleep up.
I've no doubt they air brushed Valerie, I wish someone could air brush me! But her shape is amazing. She has lost more than I have, but with her exercise she looks great. I, on the other hand, have not exercised and it shows. I need a buddy to do it with. Wouldn't it be great if we had each other to do things like that with?
Ok, this may be the worst week ever. First, my back, then my bottom. Now, my toe. I am seeing a dermatologist for my big toe. I think I have a fungus problem. She thought it was an ingrown toenail. Treatment thus far has done nothing. So today she gave me a shot in the most tender part, HUGE OUCH! Then, she took a biopsy. Now the novocaine has worn off and it hurts like you would not believe. Throbbing like crazy. I have it elevated, but dang, this is pretty rough. I have a few pain pills left over from dentist. I hope they will work. I'm going to add some tylenol or something as well. I'll make sure it's safe first.
So another day off my feet. This is like having a boring job. I'd rather be busy. I'm good at being busy. I think I want my mom! |

Hubby's job interview went well. They didn't say when they would let him know, but they said they would fly us in so we could check it out. I would say that is encouraging.
Connie: I am sorry about your toe. I know what that pain is. Almost 2 years ago I was moving furniture bare footed (don't do it), I ripped my big toenail on my left foot part way off. OUCH!!!!! They didn't remove it (for protection of the injury) and it finally made its way off. Last year I had to have my toenail deadened at the base( I don't know if that is a word), and cut due to repeated ingrown toenails. OUCH!!!! I now have a custom narrow toenail, it isn't obvious, I just know. I am so glad I am not dealing with that anymore. Keep up with the pain meds, don't go too long in between, then you have to play catch up. Follow directions of course.
My parents are on their way over and in a little while we will be going to my sister-in-law's house where my parent's-in-law are visiting from out of town and we will be having dinner. They are having pizza, so we are bringing my salad I talked about earlier and chicken from a Mexican place like El Pollo Loco.
It will be nice to have us all together, especially if we may be moving. :) :( Mixed emotions. I say more happy than sad right now.
Have a good night everyone.

K10, that is very encouraging about the job prospect! What is it your husband does? I thought NM was beautiful. My husbands old boss has to relocate to Memphis from Chicago. He is not happy about it, he has little ones and will be leaving family behind on his and his wifes side. I feel for them. But I think they will grow to like Memphis. He is way up there on the pay scale, so he will not be giving up his job. We do what we have to do.
Yep, the toe is a pain. I only have a few pain meds. I took the band-aid off and saw there is a chunk of toe missing! She really took a large piece. No wonder it hurts so much. I'm going to keep up with this until it's resolved. All of this started when I was running. It will be interesting to see what the biopsy says. But now I'm worried about a nail biopsy. I hope it doesn't hurt so much.
I've opened all the windows and the coolish weather is wonderful. All the cats have found a ledge to lay on. Except Charm, who stays by my side now. I have a feeling I will be reading well into the night.

Exercise is very important. It took me 3 plus years to from 214 pounds to 106 pounds. I never joined a gym. Just walking (Cardio) taking a pilates class once a week-if you can't exercise get a DVD or Book the library. Just move. If it is too cold (I live in Alaska) to go outside or go walk in the mall, I just start doing housework, vacuuming, declutter a room , rearrange the pantry etc.-- you will burn calories. The other cheap tip to exercise--turn on the radio to your favorite station and dance for 30 minutes.
My stomach is a little bit flabby but I do not plan to wear a bikini. I have triplets and I would rather spend the money on their college education instead of tummy tuck. I can wear a once piece bathomg suit. and no win will notice my loose flabby "jelly belly". |

My toe problem is a mystery. Here's what I think is wrong, I think I developed a fungus, a mild one, when I was running. Then, because it was irritated, I cut the nail back too far and ended up with the ingrown nail situation. That's what I think. But I could be wrong. I guess it could be an ingrown problem with an infection that has become chronic. That's what they think at the doc's. Whatever it is, I want it gone. I can't stand to have anything touching it. I have been able to get away with that because I have worn tennis shoes with lot's of room in the toes for years. But try and put a dress shoe on, and I can't. I'm going to buy a plastic cap that fits over my toe and see if that will help. I don't know! Sometimes I think I should just have the nail removed. Can someone do that? Anyway, the pain has eased up a lot, so I may get some sleep tonight.
I'm watching U of M playing in the final four. Oh yeah! Husband and son ran off to watch it with others, so much for being assisted tonight! Ladies, we are the ones that make the world go around. Kindly, my husband asked if it was ok if he left, and honestly it is, but I dread the day when I will need him...he will be lost!

Connie: What they did with my toenail was cut part of it all the way to the base and then put a chemical on it to make it so the nail can't grow back. It has been successful. Like I said earlier, it is a little more narrow that my other one, but I can only tell. Plus, I like to say it is a "custom" nail.
Triplet Mom: I am so encouraged by your story and your commitment. Was all of your weight gain due to pregnancy? How old are your kids? Were they early? How was your weight when you were younger? I know I am full of questions, but I was about 105-115 throughout my high school years and I just can't imagine being there again. If that is possible I will maybe shoot for that eventually. My goal right now is 130. I am about 182-183. My 13 year old daughter was wearing jeans that were mine in high school when she was in 6th grade. I guess I was small. I was always stocky and weighed more than I looked. You may be wondering why I have jeans since high school nearly 22 years ago? Well, they are Guess jeans and a lot of money was spent on them and I also dreamed of being there again one day. Then I had two girls and thought they may be able to wear them. Forget bikini's I believe in tankini's. I have been doing Leslie Sansone walking DVD's with my friend and today we went on a walk at the park. We even do the one with the exercise band? It was really a nice day to be ath the park.
Bronwyn: I don't watch Oprah, how big were the people?
Kathleen: Where are you and what did you weigh on Monday? Is everything ok with you and your family? I sure hope so.
I will sure miss my friends and family if we do move. I can't think about that right now though. I am getting excited and I will go from there. I know when we find out for sure, that is when, I will start feeling the sadness. I know it is all in God's plan and we need to follow His lead. Good friends stay that way no matter where you are. Thankfully, we have these wonderful things called computers that we can blog on, email with and be on facebook. We can text and have free long distance with certain calling plans and also have free cell-to-cell. I told my friend that I talk to everyday that I will still call her. We just love talking to each other. She has really becomy my best friend.
Sorry I have been so chatty. I am just nervous to find out what our lives have in store for us in the near future.
Good night all. Happy sleep to our insomniacs.

K10, the fact that your feeling excited is very good. You will be fine. And happy! I think most everyone has a pair of the "jeans" that they keep. The odds of getting into them and looking the same are iffy, but we do it anyway. My goal is to get down to a size 8. It's ridiculous! I'm wearing a 10 and still checking the scales and hoping to lose more. I am thrilled with my size right now. Why do I keep thinking an 8 is the ultimate? 143.4 yesterday. My success is due to strict following of NFNS AND cutting down on calories in a big way.
Pain update...toe is better. Not great, but better. I'm supposed to soak it in straight Listerine once or twice a day. I'm going to wait a day or two to do that. It is still rawish and very tender. Later I'll do the salt water soak. Bottom is much worse. I think it's from the straining I went through during the needle process yesterday. I found some cream last night and this morning I read it expired over a year ago. Good grief! Maybe my neighbor will pick some up for me.
Bronwyn, Carl Hiaasen is strictly zany reading. It would be a large departure from your normal reads. But lighthearted is good for the soul. I've become addicted to it.
I have to do some things around here today. Slowly. |

There lives were absolute hell......physically and emotionally. So i guess I feel blessed with a new perspective on my wieght. When you are unhappy about your weight though it doesn't matter if it is 20 or 60 lbs. you want to lose it can feel discouraging when it seems to hard to move the weight.

I am going to be helping my friend host her daughter's 13th birthday party. After most of the kids leave, there are a few girls that will be staying the night and I will help her with the craft and then hopefully be relieved of my duties. I am waiting to find out how many pizza's she needs me to get and I will also be getting carne asada for the adults, since we are all dieting. I am not even tempted by the cupcakes or candy that I was around earlier when I was there helping her run errands. I am so happy for that. I did have some chicken slices that had some sugar in them and the dressing did too. Small amounts, but she isn't doing NFNS. I figure if I try and prevent it at home, and watch it when I am out I will be doing all right. I believe that diet soda and no sugar added food triggers you to want to eat sweets. I noticed struggling more when I had no sugar added ice cream in the house. I was also drinking the yogurt with sugar in it at that time too, but I do believe artificial sweeters aren't the best choice. Good night to you all. |

Debbie M: Good for you on the no diet soda. Usually diet drinks have a sweetener of some sort in them. Splenda, Nutrasweet, etc. The no sugar added ice cream and things usually have Splenda or some other sweetener and Malitol. Hilda: Carne asada is a Mexican dish that consists of marinated beef that is grilled and you eat it with tortillas, onion, and lime. Some may have some sugar, but I think it usually doesn't. If it does, I am thinking it is minimal, just from looking at the labels of different ones I have seen in stores. |

Strange we are talking about diet pop today......I so seldom drink it......maybe one can every few months. Today I did my blood work and as it was fasting blood work. I wanted to run errands after and by 3 o'clock in the afternoon I had not had anything to eat or drink. I grabbed a diet pepsi and cashews. I ate way too many cashews and drank a whole bottle of diet pepsi. I honestly don't worry about it though because it is not something I crave or have more than about 4 times a year........because I don't like to drink aritifical sweeteners.......or eat them either as a rule Overall I try not to drink my calories.
Today when she took my blood, she did it on the arm which had the best vein just as is normal and I have always done in the past. After she finally got the needle in she said man you have a lot of interior scarring. I said, "oh well maybe it is because I had a stage 3 malignant melanoma up higher on that arm that was removed by quite deep cutting". She said "oh I would hate you to have to have that arm amputated don't ever let someone take blood from that arm again......you don't have good enough circulation in that arm to have blood removed". Well having my arm amputated had never crossed my mind as something to fear.....thanks for that But beyond that......hello why has no one ever told me that before. Anyways I also need to get a bone density test done,,,,,, I have osteopinia and I am hoping it hasn't progressed at all. After I get all the tests done......already did the mammogram.....then I will contact the Drs. office to make an appointment to get the results. I know the blood work included thyroid but I don't think it there were checks for hormones on the form.

It was worse than cookies, my son left out a bag of chocolate toffee candies. I may have had 10 or so. Argh!!!! But, I'm not going to let it get me down. I woke up this morning pain free. I was laying in bed relishing the feeling for awhile. Then I got up and moved around and the twinges of discomfort began. Everyday my toe feels better. My bottom is coming along too so I would say I am well on the way to recovery. I'm going to scramble a couple of eggs for breakfast to counter the sugar I ate last night. Then, by golly, I am going to do some house work!

I hope everything is okay with Kathleen.....i could be wrong but I don't think we have heard from her for a week,
K10 I was thinking with the no sugar added things such as ice cream that in fact the portion size is still small and the calories aren't that different from the regular ice cream. I think in our heads some times we equate fat free or sugar free with calorie free and eat more than we would of eaten of the regular stuff (and enjoy it less). Anyways if calories count and they do then that doesn't work to be eating lot of calories in sugar free ice creams and chocolates. I think that is why the fat free craze was not successful.......people were eating lots of fat free calories. I remember reading an article once tha talked about entaman cakes (I am not familiar with that brand and I dont' think that was the spelling) but the article was saying where as people would have had one piece of regular cake that with brands of fat free cakes people were eating the whole cake and think they were doing a fat free diet. I guess the other thing K10 you may have choosen to not eat the sugar free things anymore because you actually were craving healthier things......I find that when I am doing really well with my eating. |

Funny you should bring up my son Bronwyn. He was going through some stuff and found some HS pictures from his senior year. He had dieted his way down that year and was wearing a 32 in waist jean. He had previously been a 38-40. Anyway, he was quite bummed about it and went next door to see if he could get the treadmill running. I don't think he did. He did do NFNS for a short time, but his problem is sticking to it at work, out on the town, etc. Also, he likes to drink beer. So much for that plan. I think he'll come around to it eventually, but he has to work out the kinks and doing that all at once is too much for him. So a little at a time I guess.
He plans on calling the girl sometime! At least that's what he says.
I took the plunge ans soaked my toe in Listerine. It stung, but not unbearably. And now it feels surprisingly refreshed! Ha Ha!
I was one of the people who was eating too much sugar free back in the fit or fat days. Those store bought coffee cakes were so good. And as I've mentioned before, I ran my butt off and never lost a pound. If I only knew then what I know now! And as I recall, a lot of companies got busted for not being honest about the fat content of those goodies. People were actually eating high fat and high carb at the same time. The worst combination of weight gaining foods. My sister the health nut told me that. She said if you have to have fat or sugar, be sure not to have them at the same time.
Time to look in the fridge! Yikes! It's been a couple of days...I don't know what I'll find. |

Bronwyn: When we had the no sugar added ice cream we were measuring it on the scale. You may be right about craving healthier foods. I don't think a diet soda/pop is bad every once in a while. I think when it can become a problem is when it is your trigger. Or people replace water for that. I don't even buy the flavored powders you can add to waters. I don't drink enough water and I think that I should work on that without adding artificial flavors and sweeteners. I am not telling anyone else what they should do and this is just my opinion. I do use Splenda on occasion.
I don't think we have heard from Kathleen all week either. I hope she is all right.
I was helping at my friends house last night with the slumber party and you should see all the junk food these kids were eating, mine included. I do remind my oldest not to eat too much, since she got sick one time from eating too many crock-pot meatballs. I don't want to tell my kids that they can't have this stuff and with the ages they are they could easily eat this without me knowing, but it is a bummer that they were pigging out so much. A couple of times I told all the girls that it was making me feel sick with all the junk they were eating. I guess the treat I had were some potato chips and ranch dip. They had all kinds of candy, but the only thing I thought twice about were the watermelon Jolly Rancher candies. I didn't have one, but I did have Fritos and salsa when I got home, not that I was hungry at all. I think I just felt like I wanted to snack since they did.
Have a great day ladies and stay NFNS.

K10 I wasn't suggesting you were "pigging out" on the no sugar ice cream.......I just think for many people sugar free and fat free means you can have unlimited amounts. Even with your measured amounts you felt cravings? Really the portions sizes are so small to keep the calories small......and when you are eating sweet things it is hard to stop at half a cup. I do want to gain that kind of mentality though......a bite or two is enough mentality. K10 I also struggle to get my water in......I don't mind drinking water and I don't want to add the flavours to it either. What my struggle with water is i honestly don't feel like I can safely leave the house. I have had so many panicked moments looking for a washroom when I am out. I really have it almost down pat where I know where every washroom in the city is, but still you have to make it to the washroom and then what if there isn't an empty stall I remember being in the parking lot @ malls and it hitting me that I had to go immediately.......(this is when I was faithfully drinking my 8 - 10 glasses).......and just feeling like knocking everyone down racing to find a washroom. I am sure I have a bladder the size of a pea. A couple of my sons have been with me when I have had my panic washroom attacks........they have suggested maybe everyone can't drink 8 glasses of water a day Rob Thompson who is cardiologist in Seattle wrote a diet book the "Glycemic Load Diet" write about the excess water drinking and feels that things will be balanced if we just go with our thirst and not be attempting to drown ourselves in water consumption. I guess I have kind of gone with his theory just so I can leave the house occassionally without mowing people down looking for public washrooms
K10 I have had that experience too.....and it makes me mad,,,,,,where I am virtuous in my eating at a party and then come home and eat something actually less appealing at home.......geesh!!!!!
Well it seems to be K10, Connie and me on here today............I really need to drag myself away and do the things I need to do................I obviously would rather chat |

Bronwyn: Here is another example of calling things different names. We say bathroom.... I didn't take it that you were saying that I was pigging out on it. I just really wanted to make sure we were being smart in our serving sizes. Plus, it isn't cheap to have ice cream when the kids especially are having huge bowlsful.... I have a hard time with the water thing too, in that I feel like I always have to go. I have to go quite a bit anyway and then the water makes that worse. I noticed when I was drinking Pepsi all the time that I would need to go pretty soon after my first one, but later in the day it wasn't like that. I don't have the urgency that you seem to be talking about, but I did have C-Sections. Friends of mine that have had natural childbirth seem to struggle with that more than I do. I am just trying to have water with me and I know I drink more then, but I am not going to do a certain amount per day. I like what Rob Thompson says. I do think that sometimes we are truly thirsty when we think we are hungry though.
I just picked up my kids and they are in bed. My youngest went to bed at 6:00 or so this morning and my other one went to bed earlier, but definitely not early. They had a lot of fun. I asked what they had for breakfast and my oldest said. 2 pieces of pizza, a cupcake and 2 pieces of chocolate. We are going out to dinner tonight with friends, actually one of them is the widow of the friend that died in January. We are going to his favorite restaurant and we have only been there with him. I need to get ready for church, talk to you all later. |

Made it back from the city! I love driving around the U of M. The old stately houses, the cultural vibes, the energy! We ended up having mexican and it was good. We took our daughter her new bike she got for Christmas. Her Gma got it for her...it's bright pink. She swore, out of earshot of Gma, to never ride it. But she needs it so she'll suck it up. Her last bike was stolen and we think maybe this one is so pink the thieves will leave it alone. She called to say her friends were already teasing her about it. Builds character I think.
I'm off my feet for awhile. I'm looking up hair cuts online. I need one, some shaping really. |

Connie: I have a pink bike. It is more of a pastel color and I am a mom who doesn't need to prove anything unlike our kids think they do. Good luck on the hair cut search.
Bronwyn: I liked your "Walking in Memphis" comment.

I don't like my nickname Kashton anymore. I have a pink bike for when we are in RI. We take our bikes on the bike path there. The bikes are called Town Cruisers-kind of look like old fashioned bikes of the 50's. Three speed bikes. The only color for ladies in the store at the time was pink. And I thought the same thing-that no one would steal it!
Yep-I like "Walking in Memphis" too.
Hope your ingrown toenail is okay Connie. I'm always paranoid about getting that. Do you have to have the toenail trimmed by anyone special now?
I have to take antibiotics for 10 days for a wisdom tooth problem. The 10 days are over on Wednesday. I can't have it pulled before the middle of April cuz we are going to Florida to visit my mother. This is not very interesting. The tooth and gum is fine now, I just hope it stays fine till the middle of April.
I thought I might lose weight because it was hard to chew for a few days. Ummm,no.
I just had a teaspoon of almond butter for a snack. |

Sorry NFNS buddies - Have a great day. I forgot to add I am planning to start an NFNS blog. I'm putting together NFNS recipes I cook. As I make them for breakfast lunch and dinner I am taking pictures with my digital camera. I am not technically proficient with loading pictures to the internet. I will let you know when my blog is up and running.
I will also post recipes. |

Triplet Mom: I can't wait for the blog. I have often wondered what types of things you cook, this will be so awesome. Have your kids been NFNS their whole lives? Sorry that I can't remember if you have told me that already. I don't know if you read how my kids "pigged out" at that birthday party, but it is really bothering me. Do you have any suggestions on how to really encourage them to adopt this lifestyle? I think once they see some more progress on me, it might be easier. I have just decided that I am throwing away the sugar jam my daughter has been eating with her no sugar peanut butter and Ezekiel bread sandwiches. Wow, you encouraged me without saying a word. I wish I would have found this way of eating when they were little.
I can't believe how much control I can have at a dinner with friends. As I said earlier, no bread or cake. The cake was so nicely presented too. I tell as many people as I can about this way of eating and I know they think, this may be working for you, but I don't see it working for me.
If my husband gets this job in NM, we plan on him going ahead of us and I really want to work hard at paying attention to how much I am eating and exercising and just surprise him when we see each other in June. We want the kids to finish the school year here.
Kathy: My bike is a Townie by Electra. Is that what your bike is? I really need to ride my bike more. I ride it when we go camping. We live on a hill, so I don't just jump on my bike. What is really sad is, the last time I rode my bike was with my daughter in September. The worst part of that is, we rode it to get a doughnut. I wouldn't even think of doing that now.
Have a good night and a happy NFNS week. We can do it, with the encouragement of each other. |

I have decided to really try to stay perfectly NFNS and at 1200 calories until Easter Sunday. I have had some falling off the wagon slip ups lately. I have a friend who enticed me to go eat Italian and ate a whole small loaf of bread with the olive oil and cheese. I am still at 177 down from 194 last April 1. Wanted to be at 174 by this April 1. |

I am in no way trying to minimize how good Triplet Mum's ......triplets are at eating healthy. I do know though that when kids are so young (I believe her children are 6) that their parents have more control over what food choices they make. Triplet Mum sets a really good example for her children and they eat NFNS in their family. It is a different matter to try to enforce this as a life style on children who are older and who are much more active in circles outside of the home environment. I also know that trying to force these kind of ideas on older children can have the opposite affect.......cause them to hide their goodies and eat behind your back and so forth. My sister-in-law grew up in a home where there was no sugar allowed in the home.............she had this forced on her and she said she was so addicted to sugar (sneaking it and having it in unreasonable amounts because it was so forbidden and she rebelled against that). Anyways triplet Mum's lifestyle has been NFNS for her children's life......it is their way of life. I find in my life when I went through health food crazes and, I went through lots of them.......and I would try to force my children to adapt to my new way of thinking.......it make for conflict and I think I would kind of lose my perspective. I think with older children we set the example, provide the good food, try to teach good nutrition and hope they will try to make healthy choices. I may have already said this but I have never allowed sugared cereals in our home......and last year my youngest (I think it was when he was 17....anyways after he was driving) started to buy sugar cereal and hide it in a cupboard we seldom use. One day I opened the cupboard and found this box of "Frosted Flakes".......I went kind of nuts I was saying......."Frosted Flakes"......where did these come from we don't eat this kind of thing, I can't believe this. My friend said......Oh my word you would think you had just found a hash pipe..........you have made such a big deal out of sugared cereals that your kids have to buy them and hide them. Now my kids don't smoke, drink or do drugs.......apparently they occassionally want some sugared cereal. I still don't buy it, but listen I do think we have to put these things into some perspective and not create "sugar monsters" out of total deprivation. K10.......triple fruit jam has 40% less sugar and 25 calories per tablespoon.......no sugar jam has 50 calories per tablespoon and the sugar count (albeit natural) is higher than the triple fruit. The older your kids get the more important it is to pick your battles and make them worth while or else life can be a constant battle ground. Make sure that you are going after the things that matter the most and is the occassional sugar the thing you want to battle. Anyways that is my two cents on it from my experience and my children being much older. |

K10- YES! My bike is a Townie by Electra! I think it's kind of cute. I thought we were going to get regular looking 10 speed bikes-like mountain bikes. I don't know that much about bikes. These weren't cheap but I think they cost $200 less than mountain bikes which times 2 adds up to quite a savings.
So glad to have this board. It reminded me today to keep track of calories. It's easy to forget that. Somehow if I count the calories and end up at the end of the day at 2000 I just figure 'oh well', and I think it's good that I'm counting calories. I have to think of more low calorie foods!! And be sort of happy the way I am-gravity does take affect in the upper 50's and after and I think you have to accept it-very hard to do. Going to exercise class now. |

I just spent half an hour reading about the Townie......I want lime green. When we lived in the city I was really into bike riding. We were right on a bike path. I had two different bike trailers for hauling my little kids in and the bigger kids had their own bikes. Every nice day I was out on my bike. When we moved to the country 16 years ago I thought we would still ride a lot......not so, there really isn't any place to ride. My drive way is a 1/4 mile long and I could ride back and forth on it but other than that I am on a rode with cars. I think the townie would be perfect for me as I haven't ridden for so long but I still haven't any place to ride. |

Bronwyn-
Hi I decided to raise my kids on NFNS. I checked with the health care provider, and their doctor. They said it is a very healthy diet for kids. I know I can't be the NFNS police when the kids are older. At home we eat NFNS. By setting good eating habits at home, exercising instead of watching TV, I feel my kids will be healthier in the long run. When my kids are invited to birthday parties, They usually eat a healthy snack before attending the party. Last week my kids were invited to a birthday party. There was nothing but Punch and koolaid for the drinks, potato chips-pringles, candies M and M and a birthday cakes frosted with artifical frosting, turkey rollups. My kids were not hungry because they had a healthy NFNS lunch. When they were at the party they played with the friends and requested bottled water the adults have instead of the drinking Kool-Aid. They brought healthy snacks with them cut up carrots, bell peppers, and apples. They asked if they wanted a birthday cakes. They said no but will eat the turkey rollups .
I feel how I raise my kids is my business. I looked at the other 5 year old at the parties. One child hade Type 2 diabetes and was already 40 pounds overweight. The poor kid was stuffing himself with 3 helping to the cake and eating M and M. The mother same thing.

Triplet Mum I was talking about how much different it is to take teen age kids and try to convert them to NFNS. I admire that you started this with your children at a very young age.....and that you have done that by being an example to your children. Your family lives NFNS and they always have.......it isn't a fight with your kids. It is a different matter to say to older children okay we are no longer going to have any sugar......period. I am sorry you were offended because I totally didn't mean to be offensive. I think your situation is so very different because of the age you started doing this at. I too hate to see kids stuffing themselves with junk. I hated when my kids were little and they would have these Halloween parties at school where the kids were giving tons of sugar and garbage.....I always tried to fight that idea. At halloween I let my kids trick or treat but they weren't allowed to keep all of the junk they got and be eating on it for days. They picked some things out and then they had to surrend the rest. I am so sorry that you took my words to be an attack on you as I totally admire how your family has choosen to live their lives. I think that it would be so good for all of us to have started to teach our children at the age you did. The other admirable thing about it was that you did all of this when you were also so young.......you are such a mature young woman who has made your families health a top proority......and you are to be appaulded totally for that. With older kids who have not been living NFNS we can really be good examples and hope that they will follow the lead........teach them correct principles and hope they will govern themselves accordingly. Anyways..............totally sorry as I absoluetly meant no offense to you......just thinking we have to keep these things in perspective when our children are older and celebrate the good things they do and hope they will pick up on our examples. |

My 2 cents...
Triplet Mom, you have done the absolute right thing with your children, and yourself. I don't know about the people you work with since they are always tempting you, but the ladies on this board take our hats off to you for your commitment to healthy foods in a world of junk. I wish more than anything I would have had your knowledge when my kids were small. It just was a different world then. There were tv commercials saying tooth decay was the only negative side effect to sugar. And the generation that raised us was still totally enamored of canned foods. My children are both heavy and all the talking I do about NFNS is not making them change their eating habits. But if I had started them out young, like you, they would be much healthier. I think that was the point Bronwyn was making...that we are having trouble molding them as adults. I too am sooooo looking forward to your new board. We have all come to love your contributions to this site. You really are the star here. I didn't detect any criticism of you in Bronwyns post, just frustration that her family isn't eating as well as they should, and relief that they aren't completely lax in their moral choices.
My sister called last night. She found both cigarettes and weed in her sons possession. She is terribly worried and wants to believe the things he is saying but she's not stupid. Her food friend told her "it could be worse." I don't know how I would deal with that, but I think we do the best we can and pray a lot. He is a college student with a job and doing well with both. |

Triplet Mom: I hope you aren't stepping away from this forum permanently. I really value your input. I know your kids make the choices they do because of the example you have been. I feel so bad for the little one who is overweight and has Type 2 Diabetes, what a shame. I am still looking so forward to your blog with the recipes.
Bronwyn: I totally agree with you about the written word. It can be so hard to convey the correct emotion. I really appreciate your input as well. It would be so much easier for my kids if they were raised this way all along. I just hope that they weren't eating so much junk at the party because they are feeling like I have taken things away. What is considered triple fruit jam? The jams I have right now are sweetened with fruit juice.
I bought some peanut butter recently that has flax seed in it. I am going to open it when my no sugar chunky style is gone. I hope it is good. What I love about Trader Joe's is, if you buy something and you don't like it, they will take it back.
Connie: I am sorry about your nephew and the choices he is making. Did he try to say they weren't his? A boy at church (14) was caught smoking pot. Twice by his own brother. I think one of those times may have been at church can you believe that? How lame can he be? He either is so into it, he doesn't care, or he kind of wanted to get caught.
I hope we can all have a good NFNS evening and remember that we are here to support each other and to ask if there is any confusion about something that was written. I remember a while ago that something was written to me and it was a typo. This blog has been so helpful to me and I really enjoy talking to all of you ladies. |

I will continue to give my input in this forum.
I had a bad day. I should keep my emotions too myself. My friend (she has twins) and I were shopping with the triplets. She wanted to try an outfit at the local discount clothing store. Well while I was waiting for her shoppers assumed I had 5 kids. A shopper who I did not even know told me my husband and I have to stop breeding. I ignored her. When my friend returned from the dressing room I told her my encounter with the shopper. We both laughed. I guess it was a bad day. Sorry Bronwyn and NFNS buddies I should be the one saying sorry to you.
I will continue to talk to you.
NFNS buddies hang on. You will make it through this summer. Remember NFNS diet is to change your lifestyle, eating habits etc. Just take a day at a time. |

No, it is no flour of any color or kind. A lot of people are giving up white rice, white potatoes, and white bread. That is more like Sugar Busters.
I went to the doctor today for my yearly diuretic prescription for my high blood pressure. My doctor did not recognize me. Last time I went I had weighed 197 and this time it was 178 with all clothes on except shoes. He said he asked the nurse who the hell is that? I did not tell him I had on a wig. The nurse and the doctor both asked me what I was doing. I have not been sick all year that I have been on this plan. Triplet Mom, I hope you get your blog going soon. Kathleen I am worried about you......are you okay???? Let us know how you are doing! I hope you have just been busy and unable to find time to chat with us.
Kathy I was doing some reading tonight that suggested whole wheat isn't any better for us than white flour. Do you ever get kind of confused.......it seems there is so much conflicting information out there......geesh!!!! Anyways one way or the other Dr. Gott definitely says no flour of any kind. Then again he quite liberally using artifical sweeteners in his cooking book and there are people who suggest this isn't good for us. I guess we have to decide which theory or program we are going to go with and do it 100% (most of the time I get myself so confused swaying from one ideology to the next. Even when the programs conflict with each other you can see good things in each one........and then I get confused I know the old argument of why we should avoid flour is ........ "How do you make glue"......mix water and flour is the answer they give. I guess that sort of makes sense as to it not being that nuturious. |

Oh Triplet Mom, I'm so glad you got back on and cleared the air. It was just a misunderstanding. I very clearly remember pms. My family would run away from me! Those were tough days indeed. What is up with people always commenting on your kids in the negative? I remember the older couple you mentioned awhile back...the ones that ended up in your office the same day. I suppose you are taking the higher road by holding your tongue, (see, you are a mature 24 year old!) but I think I would have a snappy cutting come back ready to nail them with. (I guess I'm an immature 50 year old!) Anyway, these rude outbursts you have to endure are all about the sad people behind them, not you.
Yep, time for Kathleen to check in...and Debbie too.
My husband was not fond of dinner last night. So that is going to be a one time offering. For the rest of the week I'm going to fix tried and true meals only. It's time for shrimp scampi. Yumm!

I could eat that and he did eat it but I certainly could tell he wasn't thrilled. I also wonder why Dr. Gott doesn't talk about sprouted grain porducts or suggest them. I wonder if I need to cut back on them even though I really don't have that much Ezekial bread......not even every day. I am trying to pay some attention to the Glycemic load of foods.

Hello all, FEW, just caught up on the reading of this blog. I'm glad that misunderstanding is all cleared up.
One time at a resturant, I was sitting at the table very pregnant. Also at the table was my husband, my 4 year old and my 2 year old. An old man stopped, pointed to my stomach, looked at my other children and said " Now, thats enough." Can you believe some people? Maybe that's why I went on to have 4 children. lol So I can relate to you Stacie.
I think I might be ready to get back on the NFNS plan. I have been off for a while. I've cheated on everything and did a lot of just plain ol pigging out. My weight this morning was 204. I know~Gasp!~ I have gained back all I lost. At my lowest I was down to 191 but stayed at 193 for quite a while.
I just don't know where to start. I can't believe I've gained so much back. You won't believe how fat I feel. My rings are tight, my stomach is giant, even my face feels fat. And my arms, I don't even recognise them. Can I whine? WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I have always had very regular cycles. Usually within a day, I can expect my period to start. 28 to 30 days every month. Two months ago I had a 26 day cycle. And last month I had a 21 day cycle. What's going on? I will be 45 in June. Is this too early for perimenopause?
My depression is still at bay, so at least that is good.

I have one last store to go to today......I have been avoiding it because it is so expensive and I am not interested om spending a lot of money (oh yeah.....I don't have a lot of money Shopping for clothes is my most dreaded activity. You bet Debbie...I'll pray for you all day. Perimenopause often begins in the late 30's. Your lowered hormone levels could be contributing to the some of the problems you are having. Have your levels checked. I know I go off on this topic often, but hormones saved my life. No joke.
Just start slowly back on NFNS. Start reading the book again. Rid your house of junk. If the kids must have it, make them keep it in their rooms out of sight. That really works. Get some yummy NFNS things that you really like and enjoy them. That should be enough to get you started. Then, just one day at a time. I just finished my menu and grocery list. Take it 3 or 4 days at a time. YOU CAN DO IT GIRL!!!!!! By the time you get several weeks under your belt, easy breezy with a little effort, the weather will be perfect for outside activity. This is your time to put it all together. And stay in touch for all the support you need.
Bronwyn, I became frustrated with the GI charts. But I do believe the key to great weight loss is tied to a low GI. There are things on the NFNS diet that are not low glycemic. And visa versa. I need to dig in and compile a list of the approved foods on both diets and see what I can do with it. One of these days I'll do that. This morning I copied a recipe for mock mashed potatoes made with cauliflower. I made the SB one, but I didn't care for it at all. I hope this new one works out better. Brown rice pasta has an extremely high GI. Rats! As does potatoes. I need to find alternatives. I'll share any good ones I find, please do the same ok? |

Hey, I haven't posted in awhile but staying up with the blog. I look forward every day to reading your post. I am 48 years old and I don't have a major weight problem but I do want to stay on top of it because I have both parents with too much belly fat and I know with every year that goes by it is going to get harder and harder. I have tried many diets and I have taken many diet pills. By the way, don't waste your money, they DO NOT work. If there was a miracle diet out there Oprah would be thin. She certainly has the money. The NFNS diet along with keeping my calories under 1500 a day is the only thing that has ever worked for me. I am down five pounds now and once you get use to calorie counting it is actually pretty easy. I sat down with a food calorie list and listed all the foods that were NFNS. Then I went through and made a list of foods I know I will eat and their calories. I keep the list in a drawer in the kitchen with a composition book that I record everything I eat and the calories. I bag blue corn chips, rice crackers, triscuits and nuts in ziplock bags with the calories written on the bags. Having things ready to munch on keeps you from grabbing something you don't need. I love apples and SF peanut butter. I probably drink five cups of green tea a day. I love peppermint, jasmine and chamomile. There are also websites that give you calorie counts for fast food and restaurants if you are traveling. This is something I hope to do for the rest of my life. It is also making me eat more fruits and vegetables. I know my skin and hair look better. You get to the point that you don't have to refer to the list of calories all the time because you've memorized the calories in the foods you eat the most. I love to devil eggs and put celery in it to make it go further with little added calories. I eat this with rice crackers. These are just some of the things that help me. I do stay at home and my daughter is out on her on so it is probably a lot easier for me than someone working outside the home or having children to cook for. I feel like I finally have a grip on this eating thing and if for some reason I have a day that I can't stick to it I will just get back on track the next day. I hope everyone has a great nights sleep and Debbie M we will be praying about the house and for you. |

By the way Connie........seriously we should live closer to each other and you could boorrow my books, I have that book and sadly enough most any other one you can think of (now isn't that sad and ridiculous). I often went to the same book store and was always buying a different diet book......some how the same clerk always seemed to be there and I was sure she would roll her eyes everytime I would pick up another book. Anyways another book that is good is the Glycemic Load Diet by Rob Thompson .....I also have the recipe book. Dr. Thompson is a more moderate version of Dr. Atkins. His recipes are good. There seem to be a lot of Dr. guru's lately that are condeming grains as being the problem for obesity......that they are too high on the gylcemic index and raise blood levels too quickly and (shoot I have to go and read that again before I can explain it well but it made sense.....anyways he said that starches are useless and that no one is ever going to suffer from a starch deficiency). He isn't opposed to carbs nor does he advocate stuffing yourself with bacon, sausage and cheese. He thinks that we should eat rice, breads, potatoes in very small portions.........or even eliminate them. In my family we have been pretty big starch eaters......my husband doesn't think it is dinner if we don't have potatoes.
Guess what even really expensive clothes don't make up for being fat...........just got home from shopping. They can make nice designs into big clothes...........but they can't make a big person like the way she looks in them no matter how ridiculous the price tag. Connie I wish I could borrow your body to go shopping and go to the wedding with......I did see 10's and 12's that I could have been excited about. Groan.............I have no place left to shop and I am not sure what I am going to do. Most stores don't have over size 14......in fact they visibly recoil when you ask if they carry any 16's or 18's.

Bronwyn, I'm glad you have the book, you can read along with me. I'll just drag you through it! Have you considered shopping on line? I love it. Most sites have excellent sizing guides that can make fitting pretty accurate. Tonight when your awake see what you can find. I've already bought my dress for the wedding in Sept. I better not gain any weight! It was only 20 bucks. On sale.
My husband likes potatoes too. Last night he had half a sweet potato and a serving of mac and cheese along with his meat and green beans. In fact when he walked in the door from work he said "wow, food!" I haven't been cooking much due to my sad physical conditions. Boy, was he happy! Every once in awhile he'll become frustrated with his weight and lay off the starches, but it never lasts. He can't understand that "low unhealthy carbs" is different from Atkins. I refuse to cooperate with him and Atkins because he has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He eats out a great deal of time and the options wear him down. If I had an expense account I would probably have trouble doing NFNS as well. I'm really looking forward to getting the book and working with a low gi diet.
Good to hear from you Angie. And I'm still praying Debbie! |

Bronwyn, what kind of a wedding is it? Formal? Outdoors? Are you looking for a full length dress? I've got a stomach ache, no idea why, and I'm going to search the web for dresses. It gives me something to do, ok? |

I was just watching the biggest loser and I wish I was there. I would lose 75 pounds and look and feel better. Maybe I don't weigh enough to qualify but oh well I can dream. And I can lose the weight at home anyway. Good night. Tomorrow I begin again.
Happy April Fools Day. |

Connie it is formal and indoors. I would prefer 3/4 length to floor length. The trouble is I am really hard to fit..really. Talbots has nothing but last year I bought a jacket there that fits me so well. It is 12 Womens (so that is totally not like a 12)... it fits across my bust and across my stomach but isn't huge in the shoulders and all over. Most things that fit me in the bust and across the stomach then are actually too big for me and ill fitting.......very matronly looking or something. There is a 14 plus very high end store here that I couldn't even find anything at. I even tried on an outfit that would have been 600$.....glad I didn't like it. Where on line would you look......most of the on-line is from the States and that is kind of a pain because of mailing across the border and if you want to return. I did see a couple of things on the Nordstrom site and Dillons. I don't know where else to look really. As a last resort I did find a suit but it is a little business like and a bit wintry.
My head is going to explode trying to figure out the glycemic load program......which by the way is thought to be a much better way to measure than the glycemic index. This is a new way of thinking for me but a lot of it makes sense and is in fact pretty much no flour no sugar but also reduced starch. I think this may be the answer to being able to finally lose weight and reduce my risk of diabetes if i can figure it out. |

This is fun!!!! A few weeks ago I was on line helping my sister shop for a wedding at the beach. All kinds of choices there. I was looking at Nordstrom's too. The extra info you gave me will help me refine my search. I googled "mother of the bride/groom" and away I went. Do you have a specific color in mind? I know...shipping. It's a pain, but I think the benefits outweigh the $$$. And good heavens, don't wear something that looks like a business suit!!!!! Have you forgotten your a Goddess???? |

I can't wear anything shorter than a 3/4 length sleeve.....not only do I have ugly arms but I had surgery on my arm for a grade 3 malignant melanoma......something I defininetly always cover up. I will go to your site above................hey how come you can post a link. I found something cute on speigels but it wasn't big enough...... |

Boy this would have really confused you Connie.....my name came up anonymous and I was thinking about wanting to talk to you and I typed my name in as Connie.....I corrected it Mon Cheri was a great site and I even looked up where to buy their dresses at and a Calgary address came up. That is where I shop is in Calgary so I will have to check it out. I just don't know if they will carry the larger sizes in the store or not. definitely being able to try on the stuff would be better. I wish I could wear the outfit I had for my older sons wedding although it was 5 1/2 years ago I have never worn it again. It was a silvery green silk two piece outfit with some beading. It looked quite nice and fit well but the colour is wrong. Thanks for your help and inspiration. |

Ok, I'm done for the night. I saw several dresses I thought would work for you. Tomorrow I'll post the item numbers. But I can tell you they were all in the mon cheri collection. My very favorite was 18606. I think the length was good, it comes in black and it although it has a jacket, it's not strapless. What do you think?
Night everyone. |

Connie even though I have been eating NFNS......the more I look at the glycemic load of many of the foods I have been eating they are really high. Dr. Thompson says we should keep our glycemic load for the day below 500 (remember these numbers are not the same as gylcemic index.....which is what Jennie Brand Miller talks about in her book). He says we really don't have to keep track and count as long as we cut out the major starches.....potatoes, rice and bread. He says that diabetes is only the late stages of starch toxicity. If the panccreas can't secrete enough insulin to overcome insulin resistance, glucose starts to back up in the bloodstream and this is the condition we call diabetes. The only breakfast cereals he thinks we should eat is all bran and fibre 1......and he indicates they are higher on the G.L but not as bad as the others but at least they are also very high in fibre. 3 medium figs have has a g.l. of 151......I have been having more dates than figs......dates have a 298 for 5 figs. WOW!!!! One medium rice cake has a G.L. of 193.....holy cow, 1 cup brown rice 222. He isn't saying you can't have these things but that if you do you need to count them and keep your count under 500.......basically if the rest of the food you are eating is not starchy you can easily keep it under 500 by being aware of the G.L. counts in the high starach stuff. I think I would rather put my starch count to other things......1/2 cup garbanzo beans is 45 and the other things in hummus are very low, 1 cup of strawberries is 15 ...... of course bananas are high at 75. Overall though there are many fruits and vegetables that should be eaten and could be eaten in decent quantities. Didn't you see some upward climb in your weight (I know you have gone back down) when you started into the dried fruit......they are high on the G.L load. Anyways this is fascinating. Really the items with flours and sugars are also high on the gylcemic index.......this is sort of the NFNS program refined a little for people who are insulin resistant.......which I may be I am not sure. He also talks about the train wreck we cause for ourselves when we do the kind of quick weight loss programs I have done before......Dr. Bernstein.......a really good way to mess up your metabolism. Anyways there is so much interesting info in this book. |

Thanks Hilda and Bronwyn for your comments. I do have a problem that I am sure we all deal with. I love hummus and black beans but they don't love me...if you get my drift!! I have tried over the counter pills and they actually make it worse for me. It is such a shame because they are so good for you and very low calorie. I have started taking a probiotic every day and it seems to be helping. I also try to eat those foods at lunch so they have time to digest before I go to bed. My biggest downfall is Kraft mayo. I could eat it on everything but counting calories has put a dent into that. I buy the light and mix in the original to cut calories but keep the taste. Someone mentioned the frozen grapes. My husband eats a bowl full of frozen red grapes every night. He use to eat ice cream but says he prefers the grapes now. I can't eat them frozen because of my sensitive teeth but I do love them in chicken salad or regular salad. I hope Debbie M gets good news today and I hope no one is infected with this stupid April fools virus. They said this morning to find out if your computer is infected try to go into Mcafee or norton or any virus protection website and if you are infected it will kick you off the internet. Thanks, the appraiser will be here in less than an hour. My children's bedrooms are terrible. I'll be embarrassed because of them but I tried to get them to clean up. Now to concentrate on me. I need a list of food to stock. And like Angie said I'm going to record what I eat. Bronwyn are you still using sparkpeople? I think its a great day for me to go on a walk.

Morning. Debbie I'm glad that part of the process is over. Now the waiting. But it will be fine. Sparkspeople is a good way to start the day. Put your brain where you want to be and your body will follow.
Bronwyn, I am devastated to learn my dried figs are high GI. And bananas too. I understand your talking about the GI load, but I will be better off just dropping all foods that have a high GI when eaten in my idea of a serving size. The book I ordered will get me started. I have a lot to learn here. I remember when I was reading Fiber 35 the author skimmed the GI issue. She said it was too complicated to go into. I think that must be where you are now, right in the complicated stuff. If I can get through the first book, I'll consider the one your reading.
Bronwyn, I have not lost in so long, and I really could lose some more. I have love handles, my thighs are still a little bulgy and my knees and ankles could be slimmer. In fact, I hover around 145-147 now. That's up from 143.4. On the one hand, of course I can't complain, on the other hand, I still think I could be improving. And I consider myself a non cheater on NFNS. So I think I could really benefit from from watching my GI load. And I really think you could too, heck, we all could. Yesterday I bought 3 containers of figs...how sad is that! But I will not eat them, I will however eat the bananas. Just one a day. Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming, I really appreciate it.
The dress is 18606 in the mon cheri collection. The photo of it shows it in pink, but it does come in black too. All of the dresses I saw came in additional colors but you have to click on them to pull them up and then you can see what colors they come in. I wish you could wear your other jacket since your so fond of it, but then you would be wearing the same thing in both wedding pictures.
One of my animals had a very upset stomach last night. I have a most unpleasant job ahead of me!
Great day all.

I have searched on the web for a book that simply lists the GI values of foods. I can't find one! One site lead me to the Sugar Busters book. My son got me that for Christmas, although I dismissed it. But now I think I'll look at it more closely and see if it can help me with my questions on the GI of foods. |

Connie read the difference between Gylcemic index and Glycemic Load......the Load applys more to real eating. On the Index carrots would be too high to eat because the index was figured on a ridiculous amount.....on the load carrots woudl be fine because they were figured on a normal size serving. You can have vananas......you can have anything but you have to count the load and not go over 500. He recommends.....nuts, seeds, avocado's, cheese, yoghurt. tons of veggies, lean meats, some fruit.....but not dried because of the concentrated sugar count. You can drink milk but high fat milk has a lower count that skim and so forth. You should eat lots of salads and you can have some dressing on them. His recipes are good in his first book I haven't tried the recipes in the cook book he did with Dana Carpender yet but I do have it. I made a recipe off a recipezaar last night.......that people raved about.......oh my gosh it was gross I have no idea how it got such incredible reviews. |

Debbie read about this as well.......anyways he cuts out starches......unless you count them. If you cut our rice, potatoes an d breads he doesn't think you have to count your carbs. REally Dr; Gott really restricts or cuts those out as well. Mostly we ahve done our own interpretation of this diet.........but Dr. Gott doesn't promote starches per say either. |

I will definitely be looking into getting a cookbook. My other book has already shipped, so I'll wait and read that one before I order again. The Sugar Busters book I have is a cookbook, not the original with the nuts and bolts information.
Girls, I think we may be on to something here! I'm inspired by this new information too. Especially since everything I have read about low GI has commented on how it is a must in the battle against diabetes, my big fear. I'm going to stop all dried fruit. For lunch I had a cheese sandwich. I'm back on the cheese again until I become more educated on this. I did find a book on line with GI values, but the reviews said it was targeted for Canada, Europe and South America. It is a companion book to the one I ordered.
Bronwyn, did you find the dress I saw? That was fun. |
