Bronwyn: I am glad you are back and I am glad we can all just talk about our lives. Politics, religion, eating, child rearing etc. Never go to a new hairdresser when you are thinking about doing something new, only if you don't like your current one I suppose. Look at magazines. I agree with Connie, shoulder length is safe. You can always go shorter later. I can't wait to hear how your cut turns out.
Connie: I don't know about you, but I get frustrated when the stylist puts all that junk in my hair and then they style it some way that I could never repeat. Sometimes they style it so ugly too.
Debbie M: I think you should hint to your family that the tooth fairy should come see you. Maybe the tooth fairy can bring you a pedicure or something.
Hi Kathy, I didn't want you to feel left out.

It is a wonderful time of day...dusk. I always feel "homey" when I'm able to be quiet and enjoy it. I haven't really had a meal today. A couple of cashews on my way to the salon, and then I've been nibbling on some ham. I'm just not hungry today. Good thing because I ate a lot yesterday.
My husband came home and didn't say a word about my hair. That's fine with me. He jumped on the lawn mower and now my yard looks better, so fair enough! I'm turning in early tonight. I need to get some serious reading in and then a good nights sleep. Sweet dreams all. |

Just got back from a wedding shower for my soon to be daugher-in-law. It was a lot of fun and I ate all the food, including flour and sugar. I didn't have to but I did. Anyways it was really well attended and everyone really got into visiting and having a good time. The time is getting short now and I need to refocus on good eating so I at least won't feel bloated and yucky by time the date arrives. Shoot it seems like eating ,visiting, laughing and generally having a good time is such a natural combination. I need to figure out how to do all that and exclude some of the eating.
Man Debbie how unfortunate that you got the kids strep throat at the same time as your extraction. What was the name of that series of books.......about unfortunate situtations?
Connie you are so lucky to not be hungry the day following a day of eating more than usual. My experience is that I am more hungry the next day if I ate too much.......maybe even more so if it is flour and sugar.
Well I need to clean the kitchen and head to bed "shine the sink".......hope everyone has a lovely night. Debbie I hope things improve tomorrow................ |

Now I have a circular pocket that is swollen in my cheek and my jaw hinge hurts so bad I can't open my mouth. The extraction site hurts and I grimace when I swaloow. I'll let you know how it goes. |

Debbie is there any chance that it is an abscess I can tell you that is just a miserable kind of pain. I remember that my jaw started to swell very soon after my root canal and I just can't remember anything in my life being as all encompassing of a pain as the abscess was. I hope Med Point is open so you can have it looked at. I am so sorry that this has been such a rough experience for you. I have to say I hate dental stuff. As much as I hate to take antibiotics uncessecarily I always request them now prior to any major dental work because of my abscess experience.
K10 I also usually hate the way the hair dresser combs and styles my hair when I have it cut. I also dont' like all the junk they put in it. I don't think I will have my hair done on the day of the wedding.......hopefully I will be able to get a style I can do something with myself.
Kathy I think you should stay off the boards until after your dental work.............you have nothing to worry about and reading bad experiences can cause unneccessary stress. |

Hi-I hope to be in good shape. My friend who is a psychologist says I should think positive.
Bronwyn-Is this your first child getting married? How exciting.
I had to pass by 90% of the food at our buffet on Easter. I had to stick to fruit, garden salad, and seafood salads. It was sit-down so maybe that was easier than your shower to resist the finger foods. I will confess once in a while I have a turkey or tuna sandwich on 100% whole wheat bread. But what has helped is that I don't eat anything else with flour (mostly). I'm thinking I should give up triscuits and peanuts, and substitute it with baby carrots and good cheese.
I can't stay off this board. It's too much fun! |

Jeez Debbie...I hope your doing better! Your misery is very obvious, somebody out there, dentist/doctor, can do something. Please let us know how your doing. I hope you've had some relief.
When I stay NFNS, my appetite diminishes greatly. If I ate F&S, I would be craving like crazy all the time. That was how I gained all the weight. I munched in the middle of the night, all NFNS, but I hate it when I do that. 146 this morning.
This morning I'm going to wash my hair. No way I can fix it like she did. We'll see what happens. And I always put some "junk" in my hair. It is just so frizzy in spots. I have spent "soooo" much money over the years on products in hopes my hair would be smooth.

My husband called to say he may be out for dinner. That is turning into a problem/pattern for me. I can't seem to find the desire to cook for myself and "maybe" son. I did do some grocery shopping, so maybe I will.

Debbie M I hope you will be feeling better soon. Antibiotics usually give you relief pretty quick. I know they are prescribing too many antibiotics now days but he probably should have given you some for a few days when he worked on you.
Bronwyn you need to be a chef. Man, that breakfast sounded great! I haven't tried the wraps. My daughter lives off wraps. I will have to go to the health food store tomorrow and get some. I am going to Georgia Sunday and staying to the next Sunday. I will stay with my parents and my daughter is coming down for the weekend. I told them I was doing all the cooking. I'm excited.
Well, I was soooo bad and it was soooo good. I had fried talapia and hushpuppies that had sugar in them. That's the first time I have messed up that bad and I already feel bloated. Kathy I agree on the triscuits and peanuts. I have already cut out the triscuits and I haven't eated any kind of nuts in two days. I will get back on track tomorrow.
I ordered one of the ToniPonys off of HSN yesterday. I wear my hair in a ponytail a lot but I want something for going out and to church that looks a little nicer than a plain ponytail. It had great reviews. It is just a loose curl ponytail that is attached with a clip that you just clip onto your own. I won't get it till next week so I will let you know how it goes.
2girls it is really a calorie thing too. I did good when I started NFNS but I still have to watch my calories. The NFNS will decrease your cravings which will make cutting calories easier.

I weighed 198.5 this morning. I know once I start eating again it will rise a bit. It sure is good to see the scale in the 100's. I'm really going to try to keep it under 200. This is just the motivation I need to get going on program again. It's going to be 70 degrees by supper time here today. I'm hoping I feel like going out and cleaning out my one flower bed by the front door. There is stuff trying to grow thru the leaves. Even if I leave the leaves for when the kids get home, it will be some progress. I don't have a lot of energy yet but the pain is way down. Off to work today. The sun is already shinning brightly, 77 today the weatherman said. Over the weekend it is going to rain, rain, rain. Fine with me. The flower beds will be easy to weed when the ground is soft from rain. I kneel on plastic, but still it's a messy job. Debbie, I think you should wait before you start bending over to do anything. The pressure that will out on your mouth could be very irritating. I'm glad your feeling better, but try not to overdo. I remember losing a little when I had my root canals. What ever gets you going in the right direction!
I think my husband found a doctor for me to get my toe nail removed. I don't know enough about the doctor yet, but I am touched that husband is looking into it for me. My marriage is so much stronger, three years ago we were on the brink of divorce. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you put your mind to it.
Bronwyn, if your eating too much AND not sticking to NFNS, you are not going to see change. I know you already know this to be true, but I felt the need to put it on this page. What is harder for you...less calories, or staying NFNS? I'm just curious. Your meals always sound so "ooh la la." I think I would have a hard time with NFNS if I cooked like that. Has anyone heard of Letsdolunch? It is very similar to the way we eat. They have an extensive blog that I have picked up some ideas on. Their motto is eat till your full. It is NFNS. They stress a lot of fruits and beans. They do stay away from all nuts but allow you to eat dry roasted soy nuts. They are very anti-processed food. It's interesting if you have some time to kill. It is cool here this morning but suppose to warm up to the low 80's. I am going to get out in the yard before it warms up. The sugar, fried meal I had last night has taken a toll on my stomach. Connie I don't have trouble with NFNS but I do have portion control problem.......not even portion control per say as much as too frequent of snacking. Green smoothie girl doesn't beleve in the constant grazing that is promoted by most eating plans today......lke 5- 6 mini meals. She feels that we should eat 3 meals a day and if we have to have something inbetween to have a green smoothie and nothing else. I have decided that there would certainly not be anything wrong with me trying the green smoothie........it is so healthy.....just wonder if I will like it at all. Seems like the right time of year to try it......doesn't sound like something I would like in the winter. I haven't read too much yet but I know she recommends whole grains.......i don't believe flour. I think it would be very compatible with NFNS. Anyways for sure the smoothie is and if it is good what a fabulous way to get a bunch of greens into your day. Smoothie girl uses a Kec Tec (I think that was the name of her blender), I have a vita mix. I looked up green smoothie on the Vita Mix page and it has a lot less greens in it but it may b a good way to start........a cup or two of greens in the morning is a cup or two more than I ever have now ;-0 Green Smoothie girl has a U-Tube and her smoothie has way more greens in it.
Debbie you sousnd so much improved but I agree with Connie that you may not want to be doing gardening today. Did he say if it was an abscess......must not have been because I was in pain for a long time with that.
Kathy glad things went well.......

No, it wasn't an abscess. He gave it a name but I don't remember what it was. He said it could be very serious so he was very agressive with his prescription. Something about anerobic bacteria that was an infection in my jaw bone and cheak. He told me to call and if it wasn't any better by today he would add another antibiotic. He told me to call him at home over the weekend if I needed to.
I couldn't do any yard work today. What was I thinking? I went to my room to shower this morning after the last child went to school. I thought I would lay down for a minute before my shower. When I woke up, 4 hours had passed. I just don't have any energy. I took the painkiller and so I slept and rested most of today. Then I took another pain killer and just got Sick! But vanilla ice cream fixed me right up. The pain killer is too strong-I might have to stick to Aleve. The ice pack feels great.
B, I only want to lose 5-10 lbs. But if I don't aim for that I could easily again 5-10 pounds. I also graze Way too much.
Did you ever stop to think how you use to eat when you were in your 20's? Connie you seem to keep food consumption down.
It really struck me hard to notice how much I snack. When I was in my 20's I wasn't in my apt. much-worked long hours, and was with my husband-to-be alot. I didn't have the Many occasions to graze that I do now. The few days before I had dental surgery I didn't feel like eating crunchy and/or salty food. That eliminated peanut butter and almond butter off the spoon, peanuts, almonds, and triscuits.
That adds up to a lot of calories. Plus the meals I ate yesterday were so much lighter. I didn't want to get too full. Have you heard the Japanese eat until they are 80% full. I prayed before each restaurant meal in Florida that I could do that. Plus I ended each meal with a cup of hot water to fight any infection. |

I didn't mean to take up so much space. It was an accident. Bronwyn- I haven't lost weight while reading this board!! But I haven't gained any either. I am at about 147 lbs.and about 5'6". I have a few friends who are a lot thinner. The next week or so won't count since I'm not eating normally. Have you made a green smoothie yet? I was relying on nuts and triscuits for some fiber. I guess I should only get fiber from fruits and veggies, and some oatmeal or shredded wheat. I'm trying to think of some good crunchy veggies to snack on(when I'm better). I'm sick of celery. Guess that leaves red and green peppers, carrots, and small pieces of asparagus is pretty good if in season. I have a friend who makes just meat (chicken, fish, beef, pork, etc) and a salad every night for her and her husband. I have been doing that for awhile now plus a second hot veggie.
Angie- did you get any dry roasted soy nuts yet? Have you tried incorporating beans with anything yet? The only beans I use about twice a month is in lentil soup that I make. I'm going to look at Letsdolunch. Hopefully I can just google that.
Hilda-what part of the country are homes moving in? My younger son should be looking to buy a house-within 6 months. Do you get many first-time home buyers.

That is good news that HIlda is finding the real estate market picking up. I have been told that things will start to turn around when the housing market picks up......we can hope anyways, eh!
Kathy I guess you have had a hard time as well......hope you are able to move your jaw more in the morning. I hate to tell you guys that I was not born with wisdom teeth....none. However, I have had lots of problems with my teeth anyways so it isn't as great as it could be to not have wisdom teeth.
Kathy we are the same height......wish we were the same weight.......and I don't mean you my weight (don't worry I wouldn't wish that on you I have to lose 50 lbs. to get to where you are and I am going to hold out with the hope that green smoothies may help that process. I got everything ready tonight.....I washed and rinsed the kale and cut up my fresh pineapple. I also read to include the core of the pineapple that it has some fabulous nutrition in it that we usually miss as it isn't a part you eat but apparently it works fabulously in the smoothie. I am also putting in frozen grapes. I hope I love it and I hope I have the experiences that people who are green smoothie fans report having..........weight loss, increased energy, decrease of cravings and all around amazing health and vitality (I do say all of this with some skepticism,,,,,,,you know the cure all hoopla that so many programs report having).
We had steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and butternut squash for dinner. After dinner I made some things to have in the fridge for my kids to grab for quick lunches on their way to work. I made a fabulous red kidney bean hummus (it is a spicy tex mex style hummus) and will be good with corn chips and veggies. Another way I think it would be good is spread on a flourless wrap with some of the left over steak thinly sliced on the top, some spinach, and topped with some shredded jalepeno cheddar,,,,,,,,,,,,,I will wrap it in parchment and warm it in the oven and serve with guacamole and chopped tomatoes. Following is the hummus recipe:
in a food processor ....... process the following:
1 sm. chopped garlic clove 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1 Tablespoon Tahini 2 T. lemon juice 1 T. lime juice 2 cups kidney beans 2 tsp. gr. cumin 1 tsp. chili powder (chipotle chili powder kicks up the spice) 1 pinch cayenne 1 roasted red pepper
I always cook my beans from scratch so I also add 1/2 tsp. salt......if you use canned you may not have to do that. For a party this can be presented very pretty in a big flat bowl and topped with chopped green onion, chopped tomato, chopped avocado, chopped black olives and a sprinkle of chopped cilantro.............with the bowl on a tray filled with different colours of peppers (red, yellow, orange and green) and corn chips.
I make lots of different hummus' as my kids really like that and at the moment they are all home except my married son. |

Kathy, I'm glad you have your extractions behind you. Once you have recovered, you will be so glad you did it. My daughter had one tooth that they warned us was going to hurt much more. But that pain only lasted a day or two. Keep up with your pain meds, that will keep the pain from getting to be too much. I was born without wisdom teeth as well. And yet I have had lots and lots of crowns and root canals. I blame it on poor dental care growing up, my family just couldn't afford it. I also have a wicked cross bite. The only way to fix it is to have my upper palate surgically broken, my mouth wired shut and then an expander and braces. I just can't make myself do it. My dentists have tried really hard to talk me into it, but I can't bear the mouth being wired shut part.
I could easily have a fresh salad with grilled meat for dinner every night. When the kids are gone out on their own, maybe that's what I will do.
Bronwyn, your kitchen must be the most comfortable room in your house for you. And your mastery of food, fresh and wholesome, is something to marvel at. Well, you got the "cooking" gene, no doubt about it. I think your family is very lucky. Those new brides in your family have some big shoes to fill. I did learn some of my husbands favorite dishes from my mother-in-law, so I hope you can pass on the great dishes.
I hope your still doing better Debbie.
Hilda, the housing market is moving? Great! I've been hearing "this and that" on the news that the economy is starting to rebound. I hope that's true. It would be wonderful if the "gloom" that hovers over the country can lift. I wonder what happened to Megan? I think about her every now and then, such a victim of the economy. She was really in the mess of it, remember?
Rain today, looks like I'll be bumming around for the most part. Son is taking vet girl to Texas de Brazil for dinner. It's a very nice restaurant and he's sure to drop $100 plus for their meal. I think he is really starting to like her.
Ok, time to get that second cup of coffee! |

Yes, Kathy. The jaw being unable to move without pain was the first of my symptoms of infection. I didn't have my jaw bone cut so our situations could be different. Be very aware of the start of infection as it increases the pain tremendously. I am now eating whatever I can get into my mouth. I don't chew on the right side. And I try to rinse after eating. |

Debbie M. That sounds good about the eating whatever you can handle. I have a little something and I feel nauseous. I guess that means it's time to lie down. It's only been about 26 hours since the teeth were pulled. It seems like 4 days!!
Connie-Wow. That doesn't sound too appealing to me either about what the dentists want you to do. |

Guess what I am drinking........a green smoothie,,,,,,a feel like super woman already. It is yummy but I have to admit that I have a lot of fruit in it as well as kale. I read someones suggestion to add more fruits than greens with your first green smoothie. I have banana, pear, pineapple cores, frozen grapes and 1/2 head of kale. It is yummy, really!!! I know with that much fruit it should be, eh! Oh and i threw in a dozen or so almonds.....blanched. My next goal is to cut the fruit down and slowlly increase the greens. Kale is fairly bitter and spinach less so....... I may cut down the fruit more easily with spinach. Green smoothie girl talks about the importance of adding Kale and Collard Greens. The colour doesn't bother me.......makes me feel healthy just looking at it. I am interested in how long I feel satisfied......it made two big glasses and I am drinking the whole thing.
Hope this is a good day for both Kathy and Debbie......hey you girls could drink green smoothies if you can't chew. I am already so paranoid about dental stuff......after listening to your experiences I will be a basket case with my next dental stuff and it won't just be the bill Connie I have tons of crowns and root canals and even had a tooth pulled that they ran out of ways to torture me with treatments on it I grew up in a small town where the dentists simply weren't good dentist........and as a result I had very poor dental care.
Connie you are such a flatter........honestly I am so happy and in my element when I am in the kitchen and making fun things. My husband is such a meat and potatoes kind of a guy and not into my "adventures in the kitchen style cooking" which is my passion. In fact we have tension over food......he likes it simple. My kids on the other hand are much more adventerous in their eating style (i raised my kids not my husband .......so cooking when they are home is much more fun than just cooking for my husband. I love whole foods.......good flavours........I love to find ways to make beans and lentil dishes that are fabulous. I would love to make everything on Heidi Swanson's....101 cookbooks blog......while the kids are home I will give some of them a try. I checked the menu out for Texas de Brazil.....looks yummy.....I liked the black bean dish they showed.
Okay I better take my new found energy from my green food smoothie and get moving here.................... Good eating to you all......and good health as well!!!! |

Bronwyn, the smoothie sounds good. I will try and look it up later.
I am most certainly not using flattery when talking about your cooking skills. I have been in the kitchen for 30 years, but I don't have original concoctions. Ok, maybe a few times I've created something all mine and tasty. But I have always relied on others for recipes. It is a very true statement for me to say I never wanted to go to culinary school. So soak up the rightly deserved praise girl...you've earned it!
I'm having stomach problems today. I think the chips I ate last night definitely had flour in them. And then I nibbled on my husbands. Why..oh why...can't I be stronger in the face of Mexican food! By the time we ate last night I was starving, so of course I ate too much. just liquids for me today.
Kathy, most pain meds make me sick to my stomach too. When I was in MI with my root canal, the wonderful dentist there swapped out my pain meds for something that made me feel better without the side effects. When you do come across one you can take, remember it. Now I ask my doctors for the pain med I want. They are very understanding when you tell them how sick others can make you. Also, anesthesia can make you sick. |

Kathy you just add the .com to letsdolunch. If you go through the message boards it is pretty interesting. I have been trying to clean out the refridge this week because I am headed to Georgia in the morning so I haven't experimented any. They apparently eat a lot of eggs and beans for breakfast. They eat a lot of fruit. It is funny now that I am on NFNS I eat so much fruit and I hardly ever ate fruit before. I actually crave it now. I splurged today on a California pizza, just one piece but I rode 20 miles on the bike. They say you actually burn between 400 and 500 calories for an hour and a half so I burned the calories off even though it definetly was not NFNS. Back on the right path tomorrow. I am taking my computer so I will check on you all. Take care and have a good night. |

I think this interesting and I am going to stop buying roasted nuts..........
Printer friendly version
A Healthy Way to Roast Almonds
Roasting brings out the flavor of the nuts, and develops their sweetness. It is safe to roast nuts if done at a low temperature-typically a 160-170 degree Fahrenheit oven (at higher temperatures than this, research clearly shows damage to nuts' delicate fats) for 15-20 minutes will do the trick. Place nuts on a cookie sheet in a single layer. To enhance the "roasted" flavor, try putting a little Bragg's Liquid Aminos or soy sauce into a spray bottle and misting the nuts before roasting.
Avoid Commercially Roasted Nuts
Roasting nuts at a temperature higher than 170F will cause a breakdown of their fats and the production of free radicals. When nuts roasted at the high temperatures used commercially are consumed, the free radicals they contain can cause lipid peroxidation-the oxidizing of fats in your bloodstream that can trigger tiny injuries in artery walls-a first step in the build up of plaque and cardiovascular disease.
Check the Accuracy of Your Oven's Temperature Gauge
To ensure you are actually cooking at the temperature you have chosen, we suggest you check the accuracy of the gauge on your oven, which can easily be done with an inexpensive oven thermometer. You can find an oven thermometer at any hardware or kitchen store, or even the kitchen equipment aisle of your grocery store. Look for a stainless steel, spring-operated dial type that has both a flat bottom for standing and a hook for hanging on the rung of an oven shelf. The cost is typically $5 to $12.
To test your oven, place the thermometer on a center rack, preheat the oven for 15 minutes, then compare the reading on the thermometer to your oven gauge. If it is higher or lower than what your oven gauge indicates, then you know your oven runs either hot or cold and can compensate. For instance, if your gauge reads 170F, but the thermometer reads 200F, you know your oven runs 30 degrees hot, and you can adjust temperatures accordingly.

Debbie M. I Hope to come to the other side soon. That made me laugh, first thing in the morning, so that was a good one. My husband is going to make some cream of mushroom soup from scratch today for me. At the end he finishes it off in the blender.
Not much else is new. I haven't gone out of the house since Friday. Just don't feel up to it.
I saw an infomercial about Adrenal Fatigue. I know that infomercials make stuff up so they can sell things, but this sounded plausible. Adrenal Fatigue comes from eating too much salt, sugar, fat, and carbs. It makes weight loss impossible. I know I like salt too much. I am going to try to kick the habit- It will be like someone quitting smoking. Mainly my weakness is salt (and changing to low sodium I don't think is good enough-or maybe it will be) in triscuits and nuts. I wonder if there are any saltfree, low carb chips-maybe pita chips?
Debbie-What are you doing up so early in the morning? |

Hello all. Busy working across the street today. I looked at letsdolunch briefly last night. It always confuses me when I read dietary instructions that are really low fat but are not pure. An example would be the calling for I can't believe it's not butter instead of the real thing. The ingredients of butter are so simple an pure. I understand the need to limit the intake, but I prefer it to man made products. Anyway, I guess I'm saying letsdolunch is not for me. But I will look into it more as some of the recipes looked promising for NSNF.
Meg, are you Megan who posted awhile back? I don't have time to research your question right now, and honestly, I think Bronwyn would be the best one to answer it. I'll check in later to see if she was able to get on and address your question.

Hello ladies, I am back from San Diego and I really want to turn back around. It was so nice and pleasant there and here it is about 99 degrees. I am hating it. You know me and the heat. We will be unloading the trailer later when it cools off. I will have so much laundry to do. Yuck! The trip was worth it though. Very relaxing.
I hope those of you with the tooth problems mend quickly and don't have any complications.
Bronwyn: I don't know if I would be able to do the green smoothie. Appearance really determines whether I would like something or not, especially with drinks. I will check out the website though. I do think I will try the red bean hummus. I like red beans more than garbonzo beans. Thanks for that recipe.
I am going to weigh in the morning. I wonder if I gained weight? My big pitfall lately has been juice. I drank at least 1/2 a gallon of 100% fruit juice while I was gone.
Still nothing on the New Mexico job. I just don't understand what is happening there. My husband was offered another job in Salinas, CA with someone he really enjoyed having as a boss a couple of years ago. I wonder what God has in store for us????
I will be checking in later. It is 4 p.m. here. Thank you Lord for the room air conditioner we have.

Hi Connie. I'm new to this site, so not the previous Megan. I don't have the bag for the carob chips anymore, but there was 3.5grams of fat per serving (2.5 saturated) and a serving size is 2 tablespoons. I'm actually wondering if it's acceptable for the nfns diet... |
Connie

Welcome Meg. Nice to have you with us. Do you know what the calories per serving are? The formula I would use is this...take the fat grams and x it by 9, then divide by the calories. That # will tell you what percentage of fat is in the food. NFNS is successful when combined with making sure you don't eat too many calories or to much fat. Basically, by staying NFNS you even out your blood sugar levels, decrease cravings and then eat less overall. It's worked great for me, I've lost over 40 lbs. I've gone from a 14/16 to a 10. But, I stayed true to the program and watched my calories. How much do you want to lose? You need to give us all your weight loss history! One of the goals of NFNS is to get away from "sweets." Even healthy ones should be limited. After you lose, you can have then more often.
K10, the juice will definitely sabotage your efforts. Try mixing your juice with equal parts of water and limiting it to once a day. It has a ton of calories and a lot of natural sugar. One 4 oz glass should be all you would need. That's my unprofessional opinion. I have 4 oz three times a week at most.
That's great about your daughter finding the money. The good lesson here was having her check to see if anyone lost it. We don't get a lot of opportunities to do things like that. I hope the crabs make her happy everyday.
Time to call it a day. I hope everyone has had a great weekend. Spread the love girls! |

Congrats on your weight loss! Well, let me start by saying I really would only like to loose 10, 15lbs max. My last weight loss history was back in high school, when I went from 162 to 128. Since my freshman year of college I've gradually gained a couple pounds a year (I'm in my 7th and final year of college now). I generally sit in between 140-145lbs now (and about a size 10 too).
I think the carob chips were about 50 calories a serving? I don't know about the watching fat part, but nfns has been easy enough. Any idea if grain sweetened is ok?
K10, try mixing the juice with seltzer. Apple juice and seltzer is delicious. |

Welcome Meg. Way to go on your previous weight loss. I am happy you don't have to lose as much as I do. What degree are you shooting for? Thanks to both you and Connie for the juice idea. I think the reason I drank so much juice was, because I was in vacation mode and I really wanted something sweet. This was the first time I can remember that I didn't have multiple Pepsi's while camping. On Tuesday it will be 15 weeks since I have had a Pepsi. Another thing I had too much of was dried fruit. No sugar added, but too much natural sugar. The one thing that I did do right was ride my bike each day.
I really need to start paying attention to portion size and listening to when I am satisfied. It is so easy to be eating right, but still eating too much and just eating to eat. I think I am going to start tracking my portion size with what I am eating. I had been keep track in a journal what I eat, but not how much.
Talk to you all tomorrow. Good night.

Meg do you have a problem with chocolate or carob.....I mean can you have a small amount 1 or 2 Tablespoons and leave it at that or do you find yourself craving them? Chocolate (as everyone knows on here) is my nemesis. I believe every single ounce on my body can be attributed to chocolate. I will kid myself into thinking i can deal with it and have just a little bit.....but I am not good at having a little bit. I think that is the big question. When you have your grain sweetened chocolate chips do you feel a craving for more or for more sweets......or are you okay. Even though they are grain sweetened they are sweetened. Is there a big difference between grain sweetened or cane sugar sweetened with respect to how they affect you. Is the brand Sunspire.......if so for me they have the same affect on my cravings as does chipits.
I need to finish the kitchen and head to bed.........I'll check in with you all in the a.m.

Kids are healthy, its raining and I'm well on my way to normalcy in regaurds to my health. Oh speking of...... I found this strange little bump on the boney part of my foot. Obviously has never been there before. It dosn't move with my skin. My Dad says I worry too much. He totally blew me off. But my husband says call the Doc. Its big enough to see thought the skin half way between my pinky toe and my heal on the top of my foot (although the far left, left foot) Any ideas? Its about half the size of an erraser on a pencil and hard. I just noticed it yesterday.
Every morning I think, Is this the day I get back on track? How can I do it? WHat can I do to get motivated?

Okay this is too ridiculous.....it is now 6:34 a.m. and I haven't been able to sleep. I can't shut down my mind....stress!!! Debbie I am totally into the cyber hand holding and doing this weight loss thing together. I am pretty much just holding my own and not totally doing any program. I am loving the green smoothie though and eating lots of different bean dishes.....and I think that is all good. I have sort of been making different bean dishes to have in the fridge every other day. I cook the beans from scratch and feel so wholesome or something My last dish yesterday was a Lima bean salad....oh my gosh yummy. I used the giant Lima beans and they are fabulous.
K10........the smoothies are not only delicious they are beautiful......a lovely, really healthy green colour. They are on the expensive side.........going through tons of greens and fruits everyday hooking everyone here on them. My friend was here and suggested all kind of wonderful things to add to them like acia berry, aloe vera, and the list went on. Those are all very expensive items you get at a health food store.....I simply can't afford them. I am sticking to my organic greens and fruits (and not even organic at this point).......I am having the equivalent of probably 3 big servings of greens a day without any salad dressing .... woohooĦĦĦĦ You don't like garbanzo beans.....really....oh I love garbanzos. There is a fabulous hummus on line on Heidi Sanson's blog.....101 cokbooks....."Hummus en Fuego".....this will make a garbanzo bean lover out of you. I don't use nearly as much oil as she does....I would cut that back to at least 1/2 or less....if you try it.
Connie I agree with avoiding the man made diet foods.....I think the closer we eat to nature the better off we are......I found some really good wraps. They are so much better than the others I have tried......they say NO FLOUR NO SUGAR on them. They are sprouted grains and not cardboardy like some. They are Healthy Way Organic whole sprouted grains. I bought them at Safeways but they say made by Canada Bread.....so Safeways in the States may not have that brand. They are so good warmed with a big dollop of hummus spread over them and topped with red pepper slices, cucumber pieces, chopped tomato and avocado, some spinach and sharp cheese and wrapped up.....yummy!!!! Now what could be wrong with that????
Okay it is almost 7.....do I lie down now or what???? Geesh....I just want to sleep like a normal human being!!! |

Eh- I'm on the mend. My jaw is still stiff and hard to open. My instructions say my jaw could be stiff and sore for 3-10 days. I eat soft foods with little plastic spoons. I took a little walk around the house yesterday.
Once, right before I reunited with some high school friends, I wanted to lose some weight, so I took exaggerated tiny bites while I ate. My husband noticed it and made fun of it, but so what. Plus of course no bread, pasta, potatoes. This lasted for a few weeks. I tried to eat cereal with milk (little portion) for breakfast, soup for lunch, and salad for dinner. I called it my cereal, soup, salad diet. For a snack I ate pieces of shredded carrots from the packages they have at the store. Eating just the shredded carrots seemed to keep my mouth busy-which is what we seem to want to do for some reason. Excess energy probably.
Bronwyn, are there any Yoga or Chi Qong classes near you? Yoga hurt my back so I am cautious about recommending it. Definitely don't stretch or twist as much as others who have been in the class awhile. But Chi Qong is a very gentle exercise that emphasizes breathing, relaxation, and fluid movement of the body. I think it would help with sleeping problems. You sound like you are busy with other things so I don't know if you'd have time for a once a week class.
Debbie M. -I actually think I have one of those little bumps on my foot. It's about the size and consistency of a kernel of corn. It's only on one foot. It's on the inside of the right foot near the heel. (Just so I don't forget where it is) I need reading glasses to see it. I never saw a doctor about it. Our family doctor is nice about seeing those kinds of things. |

Morning ladies. It is too chilly here to weed. The weather says cool until Wed. I can put the weeding off, no problem! The sun is so bright today, it lifts my mood. Maybe I can ride my bike.
Meg, if I did the math correctly, the chips are 63% fat. That is very high, so I would limit them to very infrequently. Try and make your calories healthy ones. Somewhere around 30% fat. If you restrict your calories too much, you will probably mess up your metabolism, not good.
K10, the juice was definitely an improvement over the Pepsi. Now you can start getting off the juice. The seltzer water is a great idea. And the dried fruit is going to mess with your weight loss as well. I mourned the tossing off my dried figs, but I know I am better off without them. Sounds like the job situation is branching out to include other options. That's great...options are good!
I wonder if we should try making a list of the food we will eat the day before we eat it? If we planned out our meals a day in advance and stuck to it, would it make it easier to stay NFNS and calorie controlled? Hmmm. We could pencil in appropriate snacks and know we are getting enough food and not stray from the plan.

Debbie, I forgot to answer your question about the toe nail. I do not want to influence anyone with my opinion on this subject, but we once had a terribly painful experience with a podiatrist. When relaying the story to our dtr one day, she said "don't ever let anyone cut on you that isn't a surgeon." Words to live by I think. I would have your doctor look at your "bump" and then take it from there.
Kathy good to hear your on the mend. I'm curious, did the "little bites" diet before the reunion work? I know it is recommended to take smaller bites and eat slowly for weight loss. Isn't it amazing all the tricks we have tried to lose weight? |

Connie, I'm sorry about your painful podiatrist experience. Oh Boy. Isn't pain awful?
I was sitting on the couch the other day looking pitiful. My husband said I should change my name to Lucky. It got me thinking about all the medical procedures I had in the course of my life. It's amazing to have had so many. Some people go their whole lives without stepping foot in a hospital or taking an asprin. I don't think I worry about my health too much, as my Dad said. He just happens to be one of those people who is 70 years old and is on NO medication and has no health issuse. And the kicker is he smokes and drinks. He has an amazing metabolism. 6 ft tall and maybe 140 pounds soaking wet. I hope his luck dosn't run out as his own mother died of Emphysema at 77.
But alas, this is not a health issues board. I'm sorry for always bringing up these non weight related subjects. I guess I should have been a nurse or Doctor because it is very interesting to me.

Bronwyn: I have had some hummus that I do like, so I think I am progressing in my desire to eat them. I think I don't care for them when it is just them not blended up. I only have an old blender not a smoothie one or a wonderful Vita mix. I think I will just eat my fruit and salad at this point. I am glad they taste so good. So I go to Heidi Sanson's blog and look at 101 cookbooks is that right? Is that where I will find the Nikki's healthy cookies?
Well, NM is a no go. The guy from NM called my hubby and told him he is being transferred to Phoenix (he lives in NM) and that there are other stores that are going down the tubes worse than NM. Sorry K10...spelling error.....Heidi Swanson (not Sanson)101 cookbooks.....and go to desserts or cookies...."Nikki Healthy cookies".....I think they are healthy and can make kids feel they are not totally left out of the treat world....and helps to develop a taste for healthy treats. FYI they are not appropriate for you right now but at your desired weight I think they would be fine. I think once we lose our weight that our success will be maintained by having the desire to eat healthy whole foods.....not junk.
I think triplet Mum would love "Green Smoothie Girls" blog. She talks about how she handles school provided junk food and junk food at parties. I think Triplet Mum could really relate to her and although she is already so good at doing this for her children it is always a good support and fun to read about those dedicated and sympathetic to the same cause. I really tried to do what I thought was healthy for my kids as well, but I have learned a lot in the last few years.....that I wish I had know when they were really small. My kids will eat alot of things that their friends won't eat.....healthy things but they also like junk food
Kathy I have a couple of physical things that limit some things I can do.....I will check out your suggestions. I think the best for me would be water aerobics......but very time consuming....and of course then I would have to bathing suit shop and wear a bathing suit

We had planned on having lunch out but didn't get to eat until 4:30. By then I was starving and I blew NFNS. I'm not going to tell you what I ate, but here's a clue, we went to a pancake house. I am feeling very full and guilty right now. She ate worse than I did and she has health problems. Normally I am her voice of reason when it comes to food, today I had no will power what so ever. And to make matters worse, all I did was sit on my bum all day...literally. I need to do some laundry, etc. I had not planned to be gone so long. Oh well, I'm glad I could be there for her. |

Connie I would love a neighbor like you. That is dangerous to get too hungry isn't it. I know I make better choices when I am not starving..... (that is a joke I am never starving but you know what I mean
My mom, 19 year old son and i had the baba ganoush with sprouted wraps and green smoothies......holy moly I am feeling so healthy. All 3 of us loved it. if you want the recipe I got the eggplant dip recipe off of "green girl smoothie"......added a 1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes into the roasting mixture and then also a Tablespoon of Lime juice when I blended it.......I did the pulse on the food processor and left the veggies coarsely chopped.......oh yeah and I added some cilantro as well.....my goodness how yummy. |

Thanks for the welcomes. Ok, so the choc chips are 70 calories a serving, not that that's too much better. Of course I crave them (both). Even the unsweetened carob chips remind me of the real thing (and they're sugar and caffeine free). But then, I crave any snack left in the house. I guess you're right, Bronwyn, about the chocolate chips being grain sweetened. I think I'll at least stick to the unsweetened carob. Might I remind you ladies, hummus also has a serving size of 2 table spoons like the carob and chocolate, and a high level of fat! No reminders about the calorie restriction and metabolism relationship needed! I too need to stop eating just to eat! |

Portion control is always a problem and is probably unsually the reason we have excess weight. We do have to watch the portions on even healthy things....... I know I sometimes think I don't because it is healthy, thanks Meg. However, we can't really compare some calories to others such as garbanzo beans and chocolate chips. The total calories in my home made hummus using 2 cups garbanzo beans, 1 roasted red pepper, 2 Tablespoons Tahini and some seasonings like lemon juice, salt, red pepper flakes and cilantro comes out to about 630 calories and makes enough for easily 6 wraps which I then fill with veggies as well. For 300 calories (my sprouted wrap is 150 calories) I can have a very big, filling wrap that doesn't leave me craving. The baba ganoush is lower in calories and also a way to get some yummy veggies in......I didn't figure out the calorie count but it is made from low calorie veggies and has 2 tablsepoons oil added when you roast it, so it would be lower in calories than the bean dish. I have often eaten the same number of calories in chocolate and then still wanted more. That is one thing about making from scratch is you can control how much tahini or oil you use. I also find the home made to be so much better tasting.

Bronwyn, I had to look up baba ganoush...I have never heard of it. But it sounds so yummy! I'm just hoping I don't start craving after my carbo loading meal! I did temper it with an egg dish, but I doubt that helped much.
Tomorrow I'm working in the yard. It is so overgrown this year. Our cooler spring has kept me from getting to it and it is a mess. So hopefully a good nights sleep and a busy day tomorrow starting early. Sweet dreams all. |

In general I agree. Choco chips and hummus, completely different. And if we are just looking at calories, well, no one ever got fat from eating too many fruits. BUT, it was mentioned that in order to loose weight we need to eat foods that are low in fat (determined by comparing fat grams to calories) and on that note, hummus is an item to be careful of. I love hummus too and that veggie wrap sounds great. I wish my local grocery store had sprouted wraps. Yum. |

UUGH!!!! I just refreshed my page, forgetting that it would erase all that I have written. I guess I will summarize.
Bronwyn: What is baba ganoush? I wish I could taste your green smoothies without having to purchase all the ingredients.
Connie: I have wanted pancakes since I started NFNS, but haven't gone there yet. I keep thinking about when you all have said you have such upset stomachs after eating breads and such. What a good neighbor you are.
Here comes a big complaint. It was wicked HOT today. I think my car said 108 at 3 p.m. I say I think, because my digital dash is missing some lines so it is hard to read certain numbers and letters. I do know for sure that it said 104 at 4:30 p.m. I know you guys don't like me complaining about the heat here in Southern California, but please give me some pitty.
I am so grateful for my A/C in my car and in the two rooms at home.
24 will be on in 20 minutes so I will sign off for now. I hope those of you that have trouble sleeping will sleep well tonight.

K10 I can't believe it is so hot already.....I do feel sorry for you! It was 21 celsius here today.....so that is like 70 something. I love the warmer weather but we don't get much super hot weather. My Mom and Dad spent a couple of years in San Diego and loved the moderate weather there.....nice year around was how they found it. I guess you temps are not as moderate as San Diego you must be more in the L.A. area. K10 baba ganoush is just a roasted eggplant dip but I like one with red pepper in it as well and not garbanzo's.....I eat ton of beans and so I like the vegetable version on " Green Smoothie Girl".
Meg I have misplaced my NFNS book but I am sure Dr. Gott will have a hummus recipe and if he does it would then be the correct ratio of fat using his recipe.
I found Healthy Way wraps and breads at Costco tonight.......way cheaper than Ezekial and the wraps are better.
Connie I hope you don't get feeling miserable with your flour and sugar lunch. I actually haven't experienced much trouble when I have flour and sugar......except for guilt. |

Have those of you who have trouble sleeping tried listening to Joyce Meyer or Beth Moore? At least you would be learning something until you fell asleep. |

It's 2 AM and I'm out of bed for the second time. My crazy sleepless nights come in cycles. Hubby and I are traveling 2 and a half hours south for his 5 year anniversary Doc's Appointment for his gastric bypass surgery. It has been so great for him. He spent 40 years of his life over weight. The last 5 have been heaven sent. I know not all people have good results but for him its been perfect. I'm tired of being fat. I wonder what makes me eat so much and so often. Is it depression? Is it bordom? I wish I had a way to figure it out. Food seems to be comforting for me. It's not something I grew up with. I was a thin person for the first 23 years of my life. Bad habits and age have not been my friend. Why do some women in their 40's look like Lisa Rena and some look like me? I feel lazy and fat and frumpy. I want to be motivated to get into shape but...........I don't know. I'm going to have to think about what motivation really is and where it comes from.

Definition of motivation :
Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested in and committed to a job, role, or subject, and to exert persistent effort in attaining a goal. Motivation is the energizer of behavior and mother of all action. It results from the interactions among conscious and unconscious factors such as the (1) intensity of desire or need, (2) incentive or reward value of the goal, and (3) expectations of the individual and of his or her significant others.
This could get really complicated and involved. Can anyone say psycho thearapy?

OK, I'll tell you all what's bugging me. Today my 10 year old daughter comes home from school and told me something upsetting. She said on the bus ride home a neighbor girl said that her grandmother told her not to play with my daughter because she is big and fat. My daughter was also told that the grandmother referred to her as "bacon fat". I am stuck somewhere between furious and aloof. So I pick up the phone (they live 2 doors away) and talk to the other little girls father and explained to him what we just learned. I wasn't angry or nasty. He was very interested in this information and luckily said grandmother was there and he was going to talk to her. The father was honest with me when he called back after the mother in law left. She said she dosn't like my children and would prefer they stay away from the house when she is babysitting her grandkids. He didnot deny she said those things. We hung up the phone determined to not let this be aquard between us. He told her to keep her opinions to herself as she was creating trouble in the neighborhood. I have instructed my kids to never go there if she is babysitting or even visiting. How would you all feel and what would you do? It's just not sitting well with me. I don't want to develope an attitude. I want to behave in the Christian manner but I'm telling you I've had some very unfriendly thoughts. |

Debbie M: First of all I am sorry you are still awake. First, onto the grumpy grandma. The lady may have said that she was "big and fat", not called her "bacon fat", they sould similar don't you think? I am glad you took it up with the father. Did he tell you why grandma didn't like your children? I am wondering if she doesn't really like any children. Maybe she feels used over there??? I would tell my kids not to go over there either when that woman was there. I would be sad that someone said that about my kids, but sometimes you just have to consider the source. Pray for the woman. She obviously needs it, if she is telling her own grandchild that her little friend is big and fat. What person in their right mind would say that about a child???? Just pray for her and be grateful that you were able to talk with the father. We need to pray for our enemies. |

Connie-Yes, the small bites did help me lose weight that time; about 6 or 7 lbs. It was noticeable to those girls. They wanted to know how I lost weight. We had met about 6 months earlier. The bites were less that 1/2 the size I usually have. And I ate slowly.
Debbie M. - That time I lost weight before I visited some high school friends had everything to do with motivation. It's funny you brought up motivation recently. I was thinking about it too. When I can eat normally again, any in-between meal foods is just going to be fruits and veggies. I'll pre-cut them. If we have a salad most every night the veggies will be my afternoon snack. Can you eat normally now? I'm going back to the dental surgeon this AM (hopefully). Think I have Dry Socket. |

Debbie...OMG! What a terrible thing for your daughter, and you, to have to go through! I can not believe some people. I just can't imagine why the gma would spread such hate to her family. I'm steaming after reading your post. I think I would ask the father why the gma feels this way. I would do it for 2 reasons. First, I would really like to know, second, I think it would be good for the gma to know her actions have resulted in communications over a behavior that others feel she needs to explain. What an irresponsible and ignorant woman. Don't get me wrong, there have been children I wasn't crazy about in and out of our children's lives. But I never called them names! I questioned their behavior only. You know what, I think I would ask the gma face to face what it is about your children that offends her so. I would do this in the nicest possible way. She may slam the door in your face, whatever.
More importantly, what to say to your daughter. I think I would reassure her that she is not fat and encourage her to pray for the gma.
K10, I cringe at the thought of your weather! I HATE hot weather. Here in TN it can get too hot for extended periods of time. I hibernate during those months. I crank up the air conditioner and I complain to anyone who will listen! My heart goes out to you. Try not to melt, ok?
Bronwyn, so far so good on the stomach condition. Do you think the gl of baba gonoush would be lower than carob chips? That would make it a better option overall. I don't think Meg was here when we were looking into gi and gl.
Kathy, I hope you do not have a dry socket. Let us know.
I am still steaming about the gma situation. Geez! |

GI/GL? The thing I like about nfns is it's easy to understand. Common sense tells me eating more naturally would be healthier for you. When I have to start worrying about eating more than half a banana, well, that just seems silly to me. I don't know... opinions welcomed.
BTW, I'm with you hot weather haters! I'm very sad winter has ended. Anything over 70 is too hot! And I grew up in FL! |

Hello
Welcome Meg, from a newbie myself, I've only been on here for a week or so.
I received my GL book yesterday and started reading it, very interesting, I'm really excited about it. So far I have decided I am not going to eat rice, potatoes and starches with meals I make. If I'm at someone's house or out and about I will use them as 'treats'. These items I cannot control my portions, there for I need to be tough on myself and will not allow myself to have them on a daily basis.
Debbie, I would have been furious with the grandma thing too! My daughter is overweight and taller than me (my husband is 6'7"), so it's hard for her to just "blend in" I guess you would say. And let me tell you when people look at her and I know what they are thinking about her, I give some dirty looks. I'm glad she can blow most stuff off, she's good at that. I know its our fault she's like this, kids don't get heavy on there own, they learn by example. That is why I am trying to get her to eat more like the no flour no sugar way (but trying not to straight out force her on it). She is an on the go type of kid, but I'm so paranoid of weirdos and something is going to happen that I have restricted her from doing things kids should be doing (I'm really trying to work on that, I let her ride her bike from her grandma's house to school today, it's only 10 blocks, jeez I need to relax). I understand trying to behave in a Christian way, I stuggle with it from time to time, I don't mean to get too personal here, but my husband cheated on me which resulted in a child, ended the relationship with her and I didn't find out until 8 months after that. Talk about hard to behave in a Christian way when that came up. We since have gone to couseling and actually we have a better relationship then we did before, but I can say I wouldn't recommend this route for a better relationship to anyone, lol.
Glad to see that everyone is feeling better. |

Started on the weeding, then the sun ducked behind the clouds, the wind picked up and it became too chilly.
Meg, I too adore the simplicity of NFNS. That's why it works so well for me. But for some people it does become more complicated. Insulin resistance is a real condition that many people have to deal with in their weight loss attempts. For those people, identifying high gi/gl foods may be the only way to lose and avoid diabetes. Luckily for you that does not seem to be the case. But my mom is diabetic and she has to avoid those foods for the rest of her life. She can have them in very small quantities once in awhile, but if she knew then what she knows now....
Looks like I'm ironing today! Later. |

I am going to plant 2 tomato plants today, I hope they don't die. I have a necrotic thumb. I can grow jasmine and tomatoes sometimes. I just hate to pay for tomatoes that don't taste as good as homegrown.
2girls: I am sorry for what you have had to go through to get to this point in your relationship. I am glad things are good now. You go girl.
I did a no-no last night Connie. I had some cereal after everyone was in bed. It had oat, wheat and corn flour in it, molasses too. My tummy was already bothering me so I thought why not have something that may upset it anyway. I am ok now, just bloated. I wasn't going to exercise with my friend today, but I am glad I did.
Off to do my boatload of laundry, talk to you all later. |

Thanks K10, you would think if I am strong enough to get past that, you'd think I would be strong enough to lose the weight. At least I'm working on it I guess.
I really need to start some yard work, we just moved late summer last year and I was very pregnant at the time, so we need to plant grass, trees, gardens, maybe do a little landscaping. We just got rid of our snow, and hopefully that's the end of it :) |

Lots of posts this morning and I haven't had a chance to read them all......I have an appointment and have to run. Debbie M. I am so sorry that your daughter had to go through such a horrible experience. I can't believe such a grandma......wasn't the girls Dad upset by this and apologizing all over the place for the Grandma. K10 is probably right that this is a miserable Grandma who doesn't like what she is doing and feels used. I don't know but what ever my concern is for your daughter....... words hurt deeply and can't help but be emotionally very stressful for your daughter. Is y our daughter overweight and if so does she already stress about that with or without such nastiness? I think our self eteem is so wrapped up in our appearance. I hope she is doing okay.

Just got back from the store. Turns out Tribe hummus has almost half the fat per serving than Athenos. I'm happily making a switch.
Does anyone know where to find sugar free fig spread? I found it once in FL at whole foods and haven't seen it since...
Connie: Certainly diabetes is a different story.
K10: Bad idea to eat bad food on an already upset stomach. Not good reasoning.
2girls, thanks for the welcome.
