You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

Hello, all! I've just started NFNS....3 days success so far. Currently at 153, my healthy weight being around 120. (I'm barely 5 feet tall) I'm very concerned about diabetes, with a family history and prior gestational diabetes. I would appreciate some advice on something from you all regarding artificial sweetners. I can't do aspartame at all...very bad reactions, and I am leery of Splenda as well for that reason. Right now I am having a very hard time with no sugar and no sugar substitutes to fall back on. I miss sweetener in my tea and coffee the most. Maybe this is just something I'm going to have to suck up and get over????

Welcome Laney! I rarely, if ever use artificial sweeteners. When I had done Weight Watchers before I would use them in my oatmeal and other cereals, but now I don't need to. I add no sugar added fruit to my oatmeal and now it is sweet enough. I think the best way to go is to stay away from them.

Way to go ladies on your successes. I seem to be the only one that caved in. I am okay with it. I am tempted to weigh today, but I will wait until tomorrow night at my class.

Today I am going to rest. My cold is now in my head and my nose is either running or stuffy and my ears are plugged up. I am going to take some sinus medicine and hopefully not end up with another sinus infection. My cough is annoying and not productive. I have slept on the couch the last two nights so I can be propped up. My friend thinks I may be sick again because of the stress I am feeling with the house thing. She may be right.

Have a successful NFNS day today everyone. I need to get groceries today, maybe I will go later.

Take care.

Welcome Laney! Boy we are all on a roll here and it feels great. Connie I would hate to be the person who introduced you to a cookie that is going to cause you problems. You are basically in maintenance but I don't think at any point we should eat too many cookies of any kind. It does sound like from your experience that if we are going to make them that they are much better with the coconut butter.....I had thought of using regular butter next time just because of the cost of the coconut butter. Have you read all the health benefits of coconut butter and oils.....I am using them more and more but I still try to overall not use that much oil of butter at all. BTW the coconut butter spread lightly on Ezekial toast is very nice.

Debbie I did weigh this morning and I too was pleased that the scales are moving.

Angie did you do your big bike ride this week-end. I am so impressed with your activity level. I am going to ride my stationary bike a minimum of 30 minutes a day. I do arm movements as well and I think I will use my hand weights when I ride.

Diane we haven't heard from you in a while.

Good NFNS to all of you today. Oh shoot I do have a problem tonight I haven't figured out how to deal with. My kids are back from their honeymoon and we are going to the in-laws tonight for a present opening party and dessert. Some of these situations can just be so sticky to know how to say no thank you and not hurt peoples feelings.

thank you for the warm welcome! I think I may have to do without coffee and tea for now, and avoid the sweeetner issue. <sigh>

Hope you feel better K10!

I feel for you Bronwyn, with the dessert issue. People sure don't make it easy to just say NO to dessert. Can you fake eat then ditch in the garbage when no one is looking? Create a diversion by making a big deal over the gifts so that no one notices you aren't eating?
Best of luck!

Laney Laney, I think its terrific that you are going to take off 30 pounds before it becomes 80. It's totally doable.
Have you tried Truvia? I have not tried it but there are others on here that have. It's a natural sweetner. It dosn't raise your insulin levels like sugar. It does have calories. Stevia is the plant it comes from.
This might me the solution for you if you just can't take your coffee with out it being sweet.
Again, welcome. How about a picture?

Hi,

Thanks for your welcome on NFNS family, Bronwyn. I've been a secret reader of this forum for the last month or so. It's become almost as addictive as sugar to me! I'm English and so don't understand a lot of the foods you write about, which makes it all the more interesting smile Triscuits?
I've just started on NFNS and need to lose about 20 pounds. As well as sticking to NFNS I'm trying to keep to mostly low GI foods. I think I am a complete sugar addict, I just can't have anything with sugar in moderation. Alcohol is a terrible trigger so I have vowed to cut that out completely unless there's a special occasion.
Btw, I'm 44 and single, which I think is why I've put on all this weight over the past 3 years. There's nothing like being in love for keeping your appetite in check!

Keep up the good work everyone. I think it's a big help knowing that others are there to offer support and encouragement.

Anyway, I must go, I'm in the process of having a new kitchen fitted so I now have to wash the dishes in my bathroom. Nice! Never mind, once it's done I can try one of those green smoothies for breakfast.

Debbie...truvia yes, I have a whole box at home I tried just once. I'm thinking it might be an acquired taste. I will try it in tea again when I'm at home tonight.

How do I post a picture?????

Laney: We have a blog at nfnsfamily.ning.com. We do most of our communicating here on this site, but we have posted pictures on the blog. It has been nice putting faces to names. I tried the Stevia once and it was bitter to me. I think it is something that needs to be played with. I was able to return it, so I wasn't out anything. Where are you from? Thanks for the good wishes.

Deborah: Welcome. This is an addicting place to be. I feel funny when I haven't checked in for a while. Triscuits are whole wheat crackers. They kind of look like shredded wheat cereal, do you have that in England? How exciting to be getting your kitchen remodeled. I hope it turns out just like you want it too.

I had 2 pieces of Ezekiel raisin toast with some butter for breakfast. A piece of grilled chicken, chips and 2 apriums (apricot and plum combined) for lunch. I should have waited to have the apriums because now I am very full.

Welcome Deborah, I am Debra but and rarely called that. I also and 44, but far from single. 4 kids and my life is not my own. I feel slave to them at times. hehe

I have been ill again today. Just like over the week end. Now I don't know what is causing me to be sick. I thought it was the hummus but I havent eaten any more of that. Imodium has helped but now I'm afraid to eat anything.

Never heard of Apriums, I'll look at the supermarket.

Debbie M: Have you heard of pluots? They look more like a plum with some apricot mixed in. The aprium looks more like an apricot with plum mixed in. If I didn't know what it was, I would think it was an apricot. I hope you feel better soon.

Home, I'm finally home! Wow, that was a long doc's appt. They worked her over pretty good and declared her in great shape. We went for a salad after. Then I came home and had a handful of cookies. Don't feel bad Bronwyn...I needed to have something in my NFNS arsenal for a treat. We will not be making any more for awhile. If I were you, I would take my own dessert tonight. Be proud of being the smartest person in the room! People may inquire and you can wow them with your massive intelligence on all things NFNS. The important thing is that you don't cave in. That is the most important thing of all.

Hi Laney...welcome. I use the Truvia. It is twice as sweet as sugar, so start with less and adjust as needed. I rarely need sweetening, but when I do it's Truvia for me. I don't think anything will ever replace the taste of sugar exactly. And that's ok. Maybe we just need to give the new stuff time.

And hello Deborah. I'm looking forward to reading the posts from both you two newbies! I think this site made my weight loss more successful than it would have been without it.

K10, bless your heart! Don't let the sinus problem go too long. They can be really hard to clear up. Sometimes medical intervention is the only way.

Debbie, it sounds like you have...something! Hopefully it is almost over. Hang in there.

I've been gone all day literally sitting in waiting rooms and that has worn me out! I've so much to do now. But I think I'll rest awhile fist.

Sometimes is more complicated than it seems to decline a dessert.....in some settings. It would make my son unhappy with me if I started any lectures or giving of info of NFNS. I had asked if I could bring something and she said absolutely not that she had it covered. They have eaten here a couple of times and commented that they wouldn't be able to have us over to eat because I was more gourmet.....so then to come to their house and reject her cooking. I don't know I will see what I can do to avoid it or to have very little.....I don't feel tempted by whatever it is because I would rather stay riding high.....heady power stuffsmile

Interesting how we have people from all over on this board, eh!!! It makes things so interesting.

Are you hanging in there with the sinus stuff K10.....maybe it is stress. I guess the selling of the home you are in now is what is holding up your decision.....right?

Wish me luck tonight on being non offensive but also non stupid smile
K10
posted 11-May-2009 7:16pm

What is holding up the decision, is making sure my husband will primarily be in the location closest to the new home. If he has to come to Los Angeles very much that will be a 90 mile drive each way. If he has to go to LA once a week or every other week that will be fine. I hope he talks to his boss today about it.

Good luck tonight. I know it will be hard especially when she is already feeling that she can't compete with your cooking. If you were diabetic or something would you still eat it? Have a great time either way though.

Hi all and Hi to Laney and Deborah. It is always good to have new NFNS warriors here. Yes Bronwyn I did go on my bike ride and enjoyed it and then Sunday the In-laws came over and we sat ALL day. We played dominoes for three hours and I have a dull back ache. I think from sitting so long. I am going for my blood work tomorrow so no coffee or breakfast. I guess I can drink water? I started my probiotics and my stomach is a little bloated but they said that only lasted about a week and was a sign that they are working. We'll see. I also use truvia and like it a little too much. I have been eating soy nuts and dry roasted edamame. I wonder if that may be causing my bloating. K10 and Connie maybe there are just bugs going around. Hope you will be feeling better soon. Again, Bronwyn I am so proud of you! Sounds like everyone has got a burst of NFNS energy. Have a great night.

Welcome to Laney and Deborah! Please hop on to the sister site and add some pictures and information about yourselves, we are glad you could join us! I, myself quietly stalked these good people for a long time before I jumped in!

Just got done with the Wii, 30 minutes of "running" got me just short of 8 1/2 miles today, I did some inverted sit-ups afterwards. I will weigh on Wednesday morning.

Bronwyn, great job on the biking and the dessert rejection! You seem to really have the mindset now...good luck tonight!

I saw a lady at work today that Connie would have had a "talk" with ;0) She was on an electric cart in the grocery store, with a cane in the basket part. She was a little bigger than the cart was, and as I walked by she was busy putting cookies in her basket amongst all the other goodies she had in there. I felt bad that she was putting herself in the position she was. With some proper nutrition I am sure she wouldn't even need the cane she had with.

Debbie, hope you are feeling better!

K10, best of luck with all your house stuff!

Angie, I'll hopefully be hitting my favorite bike trail soon. I am waiting for my bes friend who has been recovering from surgery. She figures she'll be good to go in a few more weeks. I may have to do a solo trip before then, I am not sure I can wait!

Veggie burger tonight and a date with Jack Bauer in an hour. Everyone have a good evening!

posted 11-May-2009 10:31pm

Diane, thanks for mentioning Jack, it reminded me House was on! I see a lot of overweight people and I want to say "NFNS," but I know it would only confuse and anger them. Today my mother in law inquired if I was still trying to lose, I said no, I just stay NFNS and whatever happens...happens. She just doesn't get it. She is diabetic and watches her sugar, but she is 85 and for her the rules of good nutrition were written 50 years ago. I don't know how to get through to people like that. It is frightening for them to think of certain foods as "bad" even though that's what they are.

Bronwyn, I'm sure you will handle the evening well. I haven't been in a situation where I felt unable to share the reasons for my diet. For me, I would have to stay true to myself. That's a lot of pressure for you to be under. Social graces are not a burden I feel trapped by.

Hope your feeling better Debbie.

Good to hear from you Angie. I feel your back pain, although I'm almost back to normal. I wish I had your exercise mentality. I may be a slug!

K10, good luck with the house...we keep praying for you.

Hilda, where are you?

Bed time...at last. Tomorrow I hope to be super productive. My house can't stay clean for 48 hours straight! Daughter brought home tons of laundry, as did son from his week out of town. Yes, I do all the laundry in my house. I am extremely picky about it and I don't trust anyone with it. That's why my clothes fit and remain the correct color. I'm happy doing it this way. Anyway, night ladies...talk with you tomorrow between loads

I am busy showing properties. Not selling anything yet, but the people are close to making a decision. Interest rates are up to 5%. A fantastic time to get that $8000 tax credit for people who haven't owned a home in the past 3 years.

My daughter made me guacamole for Mother's Day. She only used avocado, tomato, onion, lemon juice and salt. It was good, but I thought it was kind of bland. What spices do you use in guacamole? I could eat it every day.

I thought of you guys and thought of wanting to come home and write on here that I was good and anyways just more and more of that heady thing. However I am having a really late dinner. I went without dinner because I thought if I couldn't be polite in avoiding the dessert than I would at least have it instead of dinner......now I am starved and having a hummus wrap with tomato and avocado ....yum, yum and an orange.

Hilda: I add some garlic salt to my guacamole.

I have been very munchie today. NFNS though. I think it is stress and lack of sleep from this cold. I just took some Nyquil and I hope I will sleep better tonight.

A couple came and looked at the house tonight. The wife came on Saturday and he wanted to see it. The realtor asked if we had any offers yet? I think that is encouraging. How about you Hilda?

I had a date with House and Jack tonight too. House had a nice twist.

Bronwyn, You were in such a hard position tonight. I am so proud of you. If you can do that you can do anything. You inspire me to do the same. I got up tonight and had 4 Triscuits and a Lite Baby Bell and 4 oz of milk.
Bronwyn really I'm so happy with the two of us. Like Connie said, it was a very painful way to live. She decribed it perfectly when she said it was like there was two people living in side each of us. I just decided the one sabotasing me was dead. I think you did too. Your face seems so thin it just dosn't seem like your body could be all that fat. :) I guess you are just blessed. Me on the other hand, my face will change dramatically when I lose enough weight. Of course my body too. I can't wait. THis is going to have to be a forever thing for me or I will just put the pounds right back on. I wish I had never gotten fat. I'm going to try to get my husband to post a full lenghth picture for my before shot. We need to have a comparison.

Debbie I am not sure about my face.....I have high cheek bones and hollows under them so maybe that is why it looks thinner. I don't think of my face as thin though. I will have my daughter put another pic up in the next day or two.....one taken 2 weeks ago just before I chopped my hair off. That was the one I meant to put up in the first place but I couldn't find it.....the other two are various stages of my hair growing over the past year and different glasses. Again it is a totally not smiling pic (pretty dang grumpy looking actually).......I can't smile in pics I don't know. I will try for at least a smirksmile I will also try to get a full body shot but....not looking fore ward to that. Why did you sleep all day......still sick to the stomach? Debbie why don't you make your own hummus....it is so easy and better. Do they have additives in the store bought stuff? Actually I do need to find that recipe as it would be a fun one for all of us to have when we want to take something we can eat to parties and also just Wow others with fabulous NFNS food.

Okay so tonight I actually went to sleep quite quickly after going to bed but then 2 hours later I was awake. Either I can't get to sleep or I can't stay asleep frown

Hilda I puree my avocado with a little lime juice and add a good salsa to it to spice it up. I don't add any fat to it because I don't think it needs it. I will see if I can find a recipe I made a couple of years ago a few times and then I forgot about it but, it was very different and yummy. It had serrano chilies in it and weird but good.....grapes and pomegranite seeds. I probably forgot about it because you can only really get pomegranites for a short time each year. In clean eating she adds pureed green peas to the avocado I guess to reduce the fat.

Now when my physical appearance matches up with my passion that will be fabulous smile Debbie that is the problem we weren't careful before and now we are dealing with the devastation left from the volume of our intake (I too could eat the whole sleeve of things like graham crackers.....and wonder what the heck is wrong with me eating the whole sleeve frown

I bought the hummus at the grocery. I am totally new to hummus and just recently had it for the first time. I would love to make it.

I can't believe the list of junk in the KFC grilled chicken. That IS gross. Its amazing what we eat when eating out and we don't even know it.

I slept most the day because of being sick but even after I began to feel better I stayed in bed. I slept all night too. Maybe I was just tired from all the activity at the camp ground. We hiked and biked and played frizbie. I'm up now and feel better. I have an enormous amount of house work to do, including laundry.

My 10 year old is having a sleep over party for 6 little girls this Satuday night. Its her 11th birthday and its a really big deal for her. I have a lot to do to ready the house for that. Its all she has talked about for 2 months. I'm getting really tired of it and can't wait for it to be over.

School is out on the 21st of May. This time of year, in the past, has sent me into a bit of depression. Then when school starts I get upset again. Although last year I did ok. So I think I'm improving. Hopefully this year I will manage better. My Mother In Law wants to haver all my kids for the first two weeks of June. THey live in MO. We would drive half way there and they would meet us. Thats Effingham ILL. Its 6 hours just half way. Then we turn around and come back 6 hours. I would have a vacation for two weeks with no kids. My emotions are torn between feeling free and missing them. My biggest hope is that I will continue losing weight and at that point it will be apparent to the kids that I am smaller when we see them mid June. Only food that I can eat will be in the house all that time, so there will be no temptations in my face.

I don't know if its the magic of staying NFNS, but I don't seem to have a hard time saying no to the bad stuff. Its out of my body and my appitite is down and I am able to resist. Connie, I am sure this is what you are talking about when you say it is so easy for you. I think I have crossed a threshold of which I do not want to return!!!~

Morning. I got some sleep this morning, yea! I have trouble falling asleep and I never stay asleep. I get up all night long. It's those diminishing hormones to blame. My HRT helps, but nothing takes the place of the real thing at full capacity. Oh well. My best sleep comes after 3 am. I go to bed early to try and amass all the sleep I can get. It's the only thing that works for me. Exercise would help. I know I can't run, I don't even want to try that, so I need to find something else. And I will. When the time is right I'll jump into it full force.

Hilda, I'm so glad your showing homes. Are people beginning to buy yet? I keep hearing it's a buyer market, it seems folks would be taking advantage of that. Good luck with the sales.

Oh Bronwyn, you clever girl! Good job! That couldn't have been terribly easy. Did you actually have the foods on a plate in front of you...just pushing it around with your fork? If you did you are made of tough stuff! A late NFNS dinner did you no harm what so ever. You are well on your way now.

And you too Debbie. Now that you are past the cravings it should all go much easier. Try and visualize F and S as the junk it is. Vilify it! It has no place in your life...you will avoid it like the plague. That's how you will get to 140. A lovely, svelte, hot 140! Soon, I predict, your appetite will begin to diminish and then the real fun will begin.

K10, how's that cold? Showing the house is the first step (after cleaning the house) I guess. Your doing great handling the relocating and the cold and the kids and the.....? It can be a tough world sometimes! But remember F&S just makes it worse.

Today we will make our first GS. Daughter is sound asleep so we will not do it for awhile. Her sleeping schedule is opposite of ours. She is a night owl by nature. We are going to have to work on that.

Yesterday she took a friend she went to HS with to the doc. The friend had a pap come back questionable and yesterday they did a second biopsy. I wondered why the friends mom didn't take her, but maybe she took her for the first one and had to work or something so I let it go. When I got home they were here and the friend had her hands resting on her abs. She was pale and they were going to the pharmacy to get her meds. After they had left I saw 2 bottles of beer on the table. Well dang. When they came back I told the friend she couldn't drink and take her pills. She said ok. After awhile she cut my daughters hair and they fell asleep on the couch for awhile. My daughter took her home about 9. For some reason I'm really bothered by this. I think she should have been recouping at home. I don't know what her family life is like, but it makes me sad. Maybe I'm being too judgmental.

The laundry is going. Today is the day I get all of that done and the house cleaned and groceries bought and a dinner prepared. I'm not leaving this house today unless it's burning!

I feel hungover. I took Nyquil last night and have that hazy feeling. I hate when I have a cold, it seems like I have more of an appetite. I wonder if it is because I can't taste very well???? My nose is better right now, but my ears are plugged and my eyes itch. UUGH!!!!

I feel like doing NOTHING today. I have felt that way the last week. That is not a way to feel when I have so much that needs to be done. I just can't see packing anything today when I have a plugged up head. I really hope nobody wants to come look at the house today.

I pray my hubby can talk to his boss today regarding us moving to the other area and that he won't have to go to LA as much. I know it must be hard to talk to him about, but it needs to be done. I think my hubby will feel trapped a bit if we move out there, because this area has more possiblilities. I think we both are thinking, he can keep paying him less than he is worth and we won't be able to do anything about it. I can't worry about that. Maybe there is a big blessing at this job in the future and that is why nothing else has worked out????

I wonder if my hubby making less may be a blessing, in that maybe the kids will get better college help???? I am trying to put a positive spin on things. We have 5 more years until both kids are out of high school. That really isn't anytime at all.

I will try not to be a pig today, but if I am NFNS for sure. I have some good fruit that I wish I could taste. I weigh in tonight and I know that I have gained. Well I don't know, but I am sure I have. Oh well, there is always next week.

I am so glad you all are doing well. I guess at least one of us has to struggle?????? As long as it isn't the same one. Bye ladies.

Hello everyone....I am soooo happy to have found you guys. There is so much positive energy flowing and so many good suggestions, I LOVE it and thank you all! I'm working on getting my info on the blog site, hope to get it done tonight. Last night I had to work very late and got home and my two children that still live with me (I call them overgrown teenagers, they are 23 and 20 years old) well, they had made homemade pizza for dinner. Pizza is my absolute weakness...argh! But I didn't partake, yay! I noticed they had left it sitting out for a few hours since I was home so late so I told myself that it was "bad" and would upset my stomach. Which may very well have been true! I had leftover baked chicken, brown rice and green peas instead. I'm still very new to this, planning to weigh on Saturday mornings only. Hope everyone has a great flour&sugar free day!

K10, when I'm sick, unless it's stomach related, I am more hungry than normal too. Weird, huh? I say you should just go with it, always being sure to stay NFNS. If you weigh a little more this week, so be it. Those NFNS calories are easier to get rid of. I know that to be true.

Laney, I'm so glad you found us too. Good job passing on the pizza. I have made pizza with a cornmeal crust, Chicago style, and I love it. So if pizza is your passion, you can have once in awhile. My dinner staple when I started NFNS was a lean meat, rice and a veggie. Cottage cheese and diced tomato on the rice is very yummy and filling.

I started this diet about a month ago and have lost 11 lbs. I'm just trying to get fit for boating season coming up. I think this is a very easy diet, although it's very hard at first, that first week was really bad. I have not been one to follow any diets for longer than a day but this one is tops on my list. I feel much better energy wise and don't seem so blah. It seriously is the food we eat. I've incorporated the Acai berry drink mix you put in water (although I think this does have some sugar in it) and it seems to do wonders. I've noticed a big change in my thighs & hips. Keep up the good work ladies!

You go, Nillabear!!! 11 pounds, that is awesome!

I haven't tried Ezekial bread yet, it sounds very popular on this board. I'm thinking the wrap might make a decent pizza. I've always preferred thin crust anyway.

I read alot of green smoothies also, which I have not tried but they sound very healthy!

Hi Nillabear, cute name! Welcome. We have a lot of new folks on here lately.

Bronwyn, I made my GS. Big handful of red leaf lettuce and chard. 1 tangerine, asian pear and banana. A sprinkling of goji berries and a couple of splashes of coconut water. It tastes green. I am not opposed to the taste, but it could be sweeter. I think I could get used to it. Daughter hates it. But I am sticking with it.

Just had some shrimp, and some laughing cow lite on a rice cake. Lots of pulp OJ and some greek yogurt with blueberries. I'm good to go.

Nillabear, good job on the 11 pounds. What is your goal? Watch out for hidden sugars in your drink mix. It can sabatage you.

Yay Laney, good job for turning your back on the pizza. I want to try Connies crust. Could you post the recipe Connie?

Here's the cornbread pizza crust. Remember you have to assemble this "Chicago" style with the sauce on top. Otherwise the crust would absorb too much of it and be soggy. Or another option is to cover the crust COMPLETELY with a good solid layer of cheese, then sauce, then toppings. The point is to keep the sauce away from the crust while baking. This is a basic NFNS cornbread recipe, you will only need 1/2 (or less) of this recipe and bake it in a deep dish pie pan.

NFNS Southern Cornbread
2 cups cornmeal
1/2 c boiling water
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 lrg egg
2 tblsp canola or vegetable oil
1 1/4 c buttermilk * you can substitute 1 tblsp vinegar into a measuring cup with milk added to make 1 cup. Let stand 10 min.

Preheat oven to 375. In a med bowl stir together 1/2 c cornmeal and the boiling water. Set aside. In a large bowl sift together remaining 1 1/2 c cornmeal, salt, baking powder and soda. Beat the egg into the reserved cornmeal/water mixture. Whisk in buttermilk to make thin batter. Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients, whisk until smooth. Bake until center is firm and edges are golden brown, about 25-40 min.

This crust is not at all like regular pizza crust. If your not a fan of cornbread, you will not like it. But I really enjoyed it. It is more flavorful and makes the pizza interesting. Cook the crust first, then add your cheese and precooked meat and sauteed veggies. It's easy to make your own homemade NS pizza sauce.

I like Edamame. Good stuff!

While I was going through my recipe box I found a couple of other items you all might like.

Caramelized Onion Dip This tastes just like onion dip, but NFNS. Great to take to a get together and dip veggies or chips into.

2 Tblsp butter
2 med yellow onins, chopped
1 tsp salt, divided
pepper to taste
1 16 oz sour cream (look for lower fat that's NS)
2 Tblsp chopped fresh chives

Melt the butter ina large nonstick skillet over med high heat; add onions and cook, stirring occasionally 20 min or until browned and tender. Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp salt and pepper. Remove from heat and let stand 30 min.
Stir together onions, sour cream and chives in a medium bowl. Stir in remaining salt. Cover and chill for 30 min or store up to 2 days. (I kept mine for 3 days)

This is a great breakfast or dinner,
Potato Pie
Preheat oven to 425
1 bag simply potatoes (hash browns)
1/3 c melted butter
Use fingers and mix well. Line the bottom and up sides of a deep dish pie pan. Bake 20 min, remove and reduce oven temp to 350.
Mix together 1 c sharp shredded cheese
1 c shredded monterey jack cheese
1 c diced ham (NS of course!)
1/2 c cream (I have used half and half and other times plain milk)
Pour into pie pan over potatoes. Bake at 350 for 30-40 min. Yum!

Debbie M I love dry roasted edamame. They also make a baked green peas snack that is really good. I took a goody body ache powder and it has relieved my back all day. I am actually in a better mood. I don't handle pain well. All these recipes sound great. I get the plain yogurt and put a pack of truvia in it with my fruit. I also take Dr. Ohhira's probiotics. They say anytime you take an antibiotic you should also take a probiotic because the antibiotic kills the bad and the good bacteria and you need to replace the good. I like Dr. Ohhira's. They lived on an orange orchard.....I would love to have fruit trees in my yard. I hope things work out for you.

Connie I have a tray of Nikki's Healthy cookies baking....I only plan to have one or two. It is a cool rainy day and everyone wanted something....kind of in the treat range. This time I used Artisana's raw chocolate coconut butter.....I totally will never buy that again because it is even more expensive than just the straight coconut butter. Definitely add frozen fruit to your GS. Purists don't think we should make them cold but I am not a purist and I tell you they are better. Green smoothie girl adds frozen fruit. I lost .2 pounds. I am fine with that, because I thought I probably gained.

There is a lady in our group that is very large and she gained 3.1 pounds and has no idea why. I know why, she eats things she shouldn't. She is in the group of ladies that I go out to eat with once per month and last month she got regular soda and the ladies all shared a dessert. She is my friends sister and she sees her do this type of thing a lot. I wish she would try NFNS, I think she would be satisfied with it.

If I can get a better blender I think I may try the green smoothie. My blender doesn't do well and we are on a tight budget, any ideas for what I should buy?

Where can you find coconut butter?

Bronwyn: I was raised in Orange County. There used to be so many orange groves when I was a kid, they are all but gone now. Do you know what city your friend lived in? People have all kinds of fruit trees in their yards. When I was a kid we had an avocado tree, lemon tree, apricot tree, plum tree and I think peaches. Our neighbor had fruit trees too.

It is looking like we are going to move into that lovely house. I may get to go see the inside soon. I am sold either way. The people are leaving in the middle of June and we could move in in July. Then in August the kids will start school. They don't know that part yet. They would start here right around Labor Day the first week of September. I will keep that quiet for a little while. ;)

I am eating dinner in a minute, I know it is late, but that is what happens on Tuesdays. It is 8:35 here.

Good Night.

K10 I actually don't remember where I was in Orange County that was so long ago. I went to University in the 70's at BYU in Utah. I went to California with a room mate, a friend, and her boyfriend. We stayed at her boyfriends parents, so I was totally a tag along. But at that time which is probably around your birth .....in my memory everybody's back yard was filled with orange trees. I thought it was fabulous. Having all of those different trees in your back yard sounds so wonderful.....so that would still be common right.....just not so many orchards??? Congratulations on the house....it sounds like you are excited about it. I hope the girls get on board with your enthusiasm.

Good morning all. I did not go for my blood work the other day so I am going friday morning. I can't have anything after midnight so no coffee. I won't be able to wait to get back home to get my fix. We have a chance of rain today. We have not had rain in weeks. I think it would be so nice to have a good shower that lasted all day. Preferably on the weekend so hubby and I could just lay in bed, read and watch TV all day. Is that too much to ask?!? We have a lot of fruit down here too. Everyone has orange trees in their yard. The last time I went walking there was a tree hanging over a fence with red grapefruit. I couldn't resist and ended up picking 3 and bringing them home. They tasted like sugar. I am eating some oranges now that are so sweet you can eat the peel with them. This diet will make you crave fruit and that's a good thing.

I put frozen red grapes in my smoothie and about 3 handfuls of spinach with banana and plain yogurt. Sometimes I use strawberries or watermelon, whatever is in season and reasonably priced. They are a staple in our house. Hope everyone has a great day. K10 keep us updated on the house.

I have a cheap blender from WM. Not the cheapest, but you know what I mean. I couldn't get my smoothie going at first yesterday. I had to add my greens, in small shredded pieces, a little at a time with some of the coconut water and that worked. I'll try the frozen fruit addition. I have the second half of yesterdays smoothie waiting for me. We'll see if it's still ok.

Nillabear, be careful with the nuts. They are very calorie rich. But they are very nutritionally rich as well. A good and healthy snack, but you have to measure your serving and then not go beyond it. If your not careful, they can throw off your diet. Don't want to eat anything bad, but don't want to undereat and set myself up for overcompensating at dinnertime either.

Angie sorry but I can't imagine my bike riding friend being happy lying n bed all day....just can't envision that smile How nice it just be able to pick fruit off the tree and eat it. Do you ever read Dr. Weil's column? I simply don't know what to think of some of these claims you can read but, he thinks that eating grapefruit increases your risk of breast cancer. I have to read the article again but it made me quit eating grapefruit. I have a couple of friends that quit as well and I just wonder how stupid is that to quit eating something as wonderful as grapefruit?

Debbie do you find an orange to be a good snack.....I sure do. I feel very satisfied after eating an orange,,,,,like full and satisfied!

Nilleabear Connie speaks from experience.....listening to my woes of eating too many nuts and then in turn too many calories. I have really cut down on the nuts. Eating too much grapefruit could increase risks of breast cancer
Eating grapefruit every day could raise the risk of developing breast cancer by almost a third, US scientists say.

A study of 50,000 post-menopausal women found eating just a quarter of a grapefruit daily raised the risk by up to 30%.

The fruit is thought to boost levels of oestrogen - the hormone associated with a higher risk of the disease, the British Journal of Cancer reported.

But the researchers and other experts said more research was still needed. NOTE THAT MORE RESEARCH IS NEEDED......JUST THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION THIS AND SEE WHAT OTHERS THING?????

Bronwyn I am actually not a grapefruit fan. Those three of which I only ate 2 over a week apart were the only grapefruit I have had in years. The only reason they were so inticing was picking them myself and knowing they were red grapefruit which is so sweet. As for the lay in the bed all day...only if it were raining. I find a good rainy day or night very romantic for some strange reason. I think I am so active that it actually gives me an OK just to be lazy. Nillabear have you tried the dry roasted edamame. They are so good and one way to satisfy that need to crunch. Also a good way to get a vegetable. I also put a few craisins in with soy nuts for a snack. I am a big muncher and these really do the job and have not seem to effect my weight in a negative way. Bronwyn I am wondering if I am menopausal or not. I am headed on 49 and I have noticed some moodiness and hotflashes. That is why I really want to keep up my exercise because they say it is so helpful. I want to avoid hormones if I can. I had a partial hystorectomy in 89 so I still have my ovaries. I am taking the Maca Root but most women said it took 3 to 6 weeks before they noticed a change. I have taken it for a week now. Laney, When I worked at the hospital before I had amy first baby I made terrible choices at the cafeteria. When I got pregnant with my first baby (I worked up until the day before he was born)I choose the leanest meat, unbreaded, a cooked vegetable and milk. Then I went to the salad bar and got a plate of raw vegetables to snack on for the afternoon. I lost 10 pounds before I began to gain weight. It wan't because I was trying. I just made better choices, healthlier choices. Thats not to say your cafeteria is as healthful as ours was. I think you are right about setting yourself up for overeating later. I think most our calories should be eaten during the day when we can use them up. Unfortunately I also like to eat at night. :(
Bronwyn, I loved my orange. It takes time to peal separate and eat. Its like an event. The only bad thing is when ever I do peal one to eat I have some little someone standing there begging for a piece. heh

Debbie M.......I love that "eating an orange is an event". Can you believe I have to peel every ones oranges. Everyone in my family loves oranges but they only eat them when I peel them for them. My daughter who is going to her last year of University this fall.....still asks me to peel her oranges. I assume she only eats them when she is at homesmile So I can have several events a daysmile Debbie M. I am buying cases of oranges from Costco....I think 10$ a case. I think it is really at the end of the season though for yummy navels. I sure hope they still have Mangoes next time I go.....a case was $5.99. I don't think the orange does anything for the green smoothie but tropical fruits are wonderful......mangoes, pineapple, and banana. My youngest has his friends drinking them.....all well and fine but he is using up all of my expensive and wonderful ingredientssmile I would love to buy all organic and I used to after my husbands recover from cancer but, I have moved away from that. It is just way too expensive. For a number of years we didn't buy anything....meat, vegetables or produce unless it was organic.

Debbie I have always hated sleepovers as well. The only think I did prefer though was that they be at my house.....I didn't like my kids to have sleep overs away from home. I think I was a probation officer and child welfare worker too long.....I heard and saw too much. Children as so vulnerable!

Debbie M, I commend you for eating so well when you were pregnant. I can clearly remember polishing off an entire box of Twinkies in one sitting while pregnant with my son even though that was 22 years ago.
I ended up getting from the cafeteria a hamburger with no bun and some fruit cocktail which I rinsed off before eating. Then I walked for half an hour. I guess not too bad, but my stomach hurts now pretty badly. I will make sure I have my own food from home everyday from now on. Also, my own beverages! I got some unsweetened iced tea from the cafeteria and it tasted like coffee. It's almost comical how bad their food is.

Debbie M. I too ate so well with my first pregnancy. I did liaison between probation and the courts. Everyday I walked back and forth from my office to the court house (several city blocks) 4 times...over in the a.m., back and forth at lunch and the back to the office again at the end of the day. At the court house I used the stairs totally up and down between the court rooms and the remand centre. At lunch everyday I ate at 1 of 2 little granola "hippy" kind of restaurants. the "Soup Kitchen" and "Ambrosia". I had fabulous soups, salads and sandwiches all on super grainy wonderful breads. I would buy yoghurts and bran muffins for snacks. I ate fabulously and never attempted any kind of dieting at all. I worked up until 2 weeks before he was born. I weighed 148 the last day of that pregnancy. What in the world did I do to myself after that????? Actually weight wise I did about the same the next time.,,,,,4 1/2 years later I started my pregnancy at 175frown

I'd love to be 175!
I had chicken and broccoli with melted cheese for supper.
I'm sick again. The same sick I was before. It started at 4 this afternoon. What am I going to do with myself. Just when I think I'm better, here it comes again.
Bronwyn, There must have been a lot of heart ache working in the system as you did. I bet after a while it really took its toll on you.

Thanks Laney, I'm doing it again now, but this time its for ME! 140 here I come!~

Evening folks. My left over green smoothie was better tasting today than yesterday, Nice surprise. I haven't had any cheese today, or yesterday either. Go me! But now it's dinner time and I'm hungry and cheese is sounding mighty fine. Hmmm. I guess I should really try to come up with an alternative. The cupboards are bare. Maybe some left over chicken and a small red potato. That's what I'll do. No muss, no fuss.

Everyone sounds strong. We can keep it up...we can do this long term. I gained so much weight, 50 plus lbs with child #1. I retained tons of fluid. #2, they were worried because baby was so small. My weight was much better the second time around. My husband read somewhere that good nutrition and intelligence were directly related. He was always giving me things to eat and I usually ate them. I was a big ol' gal when I was pregnant. License to eat.

I reread what I wrote about weight and pregnancy.....it was confusing.....1st 2 pregnancies I started at 125 and ended at 148....and was back to my original weight quite quickly after birth. There was a 4 1/2 year gap and I started my next pregnancy at 175.........unbelievable that I let that happen. The 4th pregnancy I started heavy as well and the battle has been on forever since.

Good evening everyone!
I just added a new feature to the other site that I hope you will check out, it is a map that we can all place ourselves on. Just look for the aptly named "Map" page.

It is a gray, breezy day here, kind of a bummer since Wednesdays are my only day off.

Debbie, I was watching The Biggest Loser finale with you last night, you're right, it is inspiring. It amazes me that these people can lose so much weight in a 17 week period. Bob Harper could beat me into shape anytime :)

I was too tired to eat a good dinner. I had a small red potato with some butter and.....a very light sprinkling of mexi cheese. My daughter had a plate of bean nachos, I really could have over did it, but honestly, too tired to do the work! I am no spring chicken! I would love to have more help in the kitchen...wouldn't we all I guess. Tomorrow another GS. Today's was really good. Less greens next time. I have some strawberries I can add.

My back hung in there with me today but I'm glad to be off my feet. Nice night all.

Do not give them any caffeine at the sleepover. Offer only caffeine free drinks. I learned this with my 3 girls.

Our computer was out for awhile. We had a memorial service for my mother-in-law on Sat. She died in January. Had 19 people at my house on Saturday.

I weighed 142 on a real metal scale. I'm staying away from carbs. when I snack at night. Exercised one hour at class this morning, and walked with my ipod at about 7:00 PM. for about 40 minutes. The walking is new for me-and has boosted my metabolism I can tell. The ipod makes it 100% better. I have challenging hills on my route.

Connie-I saw a commercial for Laughing Cow cheese on tv.

I am not getting the green smoothee attraction. Just doesn't sound appetizing to me.I would rather eat my fruit and spinach separately. I love spinach in salads. I have been eating frozen blueberries and raspberries and blackberries and strawberries. Kind of like having a popsicle. I love frozen grapes in the summertime.

I had forgotten about the Ezekiel tortilla pizza I had made a while back with shredded cheese and salsa. No fuss pizza crust.

The map is really cool. I can't wait to see everyone on there. I added two pictures. One is of me and my husband. The other is of my children and my son is holding my dog.
