recipezaar.com/cookbook.php?bookid=33588 of course this had the hhtp:/www. in front of it.....hope I don't get kicked off the board for posting this Anyways these are recipes from the W.W. core program. Some of them do have sugar in them. I had thought on the core program you couldn't have flour or sugar? K10 there may be some recipes here that interest you. I like that they have been rated and that there are comments on how to make it better. The one I thought our group may want to experiment with was the no carb spinach "bread"......one of the reviewers commented on how good it was as pizza crust.
Debbie M. my Mum isn't doing well at all. A short stint in a nursing home has made her almost bed ridden. She wasn't in good shape before but she could walk with assistance. I have talked to the home nurses about it and there isn't much chance of recouping her strength. My Mum is such a good person and she has lived a good life full of service to her family, community and her Saviour. I hope she can soon go to be with my Dad who passed away 15 years ago. My Mum was 90 in January. |

I don't know, I feel so sad after reading all the posts. Today I watched Farrah's Story on my computer. That made me think of my own mortality. That is something I do not do very often. I don't think we are supposed to. But, it seems to be the older I get, more people in my circle of friends and family are becoming ill or passing away. For some reason I'm taking awhile to process things.
K10, glad to say a prayer for your mother in law. And for your mom too Bronwyn.
Bronwyn, I've been thinking about your post. Maybe you need to break your calories up more during the day. I remember that's how Dolly Parton said she lost her weight, she ate every 2 or 3 hours, but watched her overall caloric intake. Some doc's claim that is the only way to go. Just a thought.
Dinner was great. Shrimp scampi, cottage cheese and garlic toast. This is one of my favorites.
Shrimp Scampi 1 1/2 lb raw shrimp, peeled Olive oil 3 Tblsp butter, divided 2 tomatoes chopped 6 green onions, sliced 4 cloves garlic, minced fresh or dried basil to taste (I use 1 Tblsp dried) 1/4 cup dry white wine (I substitute cooking sherry, maybe 1 1/2 Tblsp) salt and pepper to taste Parmesan cheese (fresh in tub!)
Cook shrimp in olive oil until pink and done. Remove from pan and set aside. Add 1 Tablsp butter, saute garlic and green onions until tender. Add chopped tomatoes and saute till soft. Remove veggies. Add remaining butter, white wine and basil. Stir well. Add shrimp and veggies. Cook until heated through.
I serve this over rice pasta and top with parmesan cheese.

Bronwyn-What town in Connecticut did you visit your brother? That's where I grew up! I learned to take the train into NYC at a pretty young age. It was an exciting place. Now I'm in the country (central Massachusetts is a rural area) and I would never go back to the NYC area. If you were in Greenwich or Cos Cob, I would love to know what street your brother lived on. I can't wait to hear about it.
Debbie M. The birthday party was very funny-gum in someone's hair, someone's tooth came out (how old was that person?), and the neighbor's father came over. Wow. That's a lot going on.
Bronwyn-My two grown sons live within 15 miles of us-and I love it too. One of them use to live 2 hours away. They don't come over at the same time-that would be really fun. I guess it's because one son has a steady girl, and the other is unattached.
You don't want to hear what I've been eating. I'll start being good tonight. Today was just a little off the target. I always wondered why people were so thin and gyms were not around in the 50's and 60's. It should be so easy to eat small portions, especially if you have a snack to take the edge off your appetite. |

Good news so far on my mother-in-law. They took her by ambulance to one hospital and decided to send her to another hospital. They saw a 100% blockage in one of her arteries and did a stint right then and there. She will be there at least 3 nights. She may have another procedure because there was other blockages I think. I can't believe how quickly they got this done. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS THEY WERE FELT.
Bronwyn: Sorry about your mom's decline. 90, that is awesome. I hope you don't get kicked off. Thanks for your post too.
Laney: Great job on the weight loss.
Connie: Thanks for the recipe.

I'm 49 pound heavier than you Connie. I'm 194 today. You are around my goal weight.
I saw myself in my daughters birthday picture and I almost hit the floor. Bronwyn, I guess I now know how you felt when you saw your wedding pictures.
I bet my husband is just tired of me being sick. My illness came back today but I'm finally feeling better this afternoon. I was layed up all morning. I hope the medicine is working. What is Tuna rockafeller?
I just remembered a dream that I had this morning. And I think I know what it means. I was at a resturaunt and everyones food came but mime. I had been eating appitizers and bread and all the junk that comes before a meal so I wasn't hungry. I complained to the waiter anyway. The whole time I was thinking I was going to be too full to eat it anyway so why did I complain. I think this means that I have been eating too much in between meals. I'll try to stop that.
We are going camping on Friday thru Monday. Yippy, it will be nice to get away. My parents are going with us. They have their own camper. The only thing bad about them going is their dog barks alot.
My daughter was invited to a party on the last day of school, which is Thursday. So I was relieved that she could go. But now suddenly the party is on Friday and she is mad that we are going camping. I know she will be grumpy to miss it. Now I feel really bad. We have had these reservations since February. This is my 13 year old so she is very into her friends. There will be nothing I can say to make it better. I'm sure she will take it out on her siblings. She can be very nasty at times. Whats a Mom to do?

Debbie M: Do we have the same daughter? There have been many times when we have gone camping and something else was planned that same weekend. It usually had to do with church. Our rule is, what is on the calendar first is what is priority. So you win there. I would explain to her too that if she doesn't have a happy heart she won't get to go to the next thing she is invited to. My daughter usually will complain and then have a great time. Things happen.
I hope she will change her tune. |

Debbie M......I know what my measurements are and I know what I weigh....but still seeing the pics are so shocking to me. I have no idea why it should be shocking but it is. I always feel devastated when I see myself in a picture. It is so true.....if you are fat you look fat, if you are thin you look thin (isn't that what you said?) Somehow I except to look thinner even though I am fat....how dumb is that. When I tried on the outfit I wore for the wedding I somehow thought it was quite flattering and that I looked pretty good in it. When I look at the pics.....and I am not being hard on myself, it is simply the truth.....I look so much heavier than everyone else. I actually don't even recognize myself. You would think that the natural outcome would be,to be more motivated ,after seeing the pics.....it has the opposite affect on me. It makes me feel discouraged and defeated.......so I seldom look at pics and I also avoid being in pics.
Thanks for the happy Victoria Day greetings....but unfortunately it is gray, gloomy, cool and rainy (i thought even a flake or two of snow earlier). We have not had any very nice weather yet this spring. It seemed like an unusally long and snowy winter as well......ready for nicer weather.
So far today I have had cottage cheese, pineapple and walnuts. Debbie you are on your way down the scales.....way to go!!! About your dream.....I definitely think I eat too much. I like to eat....even just really healthy things. I like to think about recipes and food and all of that too much......I need a new passion. I need to find fulfillment in things unrelated to cooking or eating or reading recipes or anything related to food. The truth is we can survive on very little food.....we don't need a great deal of food and especially in our society where we don't have to be physically active just to maintain our lives (chopping wood, hauling water, manually washing clothes and etc.)

My second thyroid test came back normal. I can't help but wonder if it is the Maca Root I have been taking. Anyway. I am glad I don't have to get on Prescription drugs. They told me to have it checked again in six months. Still have two more test to hear from but so far so good. It has rained all day today. It was great but I had to get out in it first thing to have the blood test done. We need the rain so I am not complaining.
I remember my daughter not wanting to go on trips with the family. They can really cop an attitude but that's all apart of those wonderful teenage years. It goes by quickly.

Busy day. Glad to be able to keep up with myself.
K10, I'll keep praying for your MIL. "No news is good news" is a good way to look at things.
Angie, good news about the test results. Is there something you are checking for specifically, or is this an annual physical? In this case, "good news is good news!"
I have had soooo many run-ins with my daughter. I swear, my entire family feels for me. She could be such a stinker at times, most times. And often she didn't care who was watching. But I have to say, I never let up on her. I am the mom, she is the child, and it will be the day they put me in the ground when she one ups me. (At least to my face!) She is being pretty reasonable so far. Age is maturing her, thank goodness. Everyone always said she'll come around. It has taken her longer than most. But I can out stubborn her.
Bronwyn, I am almost as frustrated with your weight loss as you are. Something has to give. All of your blood work came back ok so you're good to go there. But restricting your calories and going hungry is not going to work. That is a bad idea. Counting calories seems a chore? But there has to be a way. We all need to put our heads together and figure this out. You are a slim woman waiting to get out! Exercise is needed, but you have to be careful. Swimming is best, but can you leave your mom? Granted, swimming is a bother, but if that's what works, would you try it?
Debbie, keep up the good work. And get better. Remember, when it rains, it pours. We all get back to back problems once in awhile. When you feel all better, everything will feel all better.
Laney, congrats on the 3 pounds.
Hilda, you are one inspirational chick! I can never pick my favorite Bible verse. I'll keep trying though!
I'm too tired to post tonight's dinner recipe. I'll do it tomorrow, promise. Daughters tuna dish was a bit dry. But yummy. I don't know how to describe it. Like a tuna quiche maybe...or not. It's dense, spinach, tuna, cheese. I'll post it tomorrow too. Ya'll have a nice night! |

Angie I am sure there is never a bad picture of you. You are so adorable. Have you been having concerns about your thyroid? I recently had blood work done as part of my yearly physical and mine came back normal as well. It is definitely on the low end. My Dr. is very conservative. He said an alternative Dr. would say it was too low and put me on thyroid medications. He is really against that. I had a friend once, who I have lost contact with in the past few years so I don't know where she is with weight and thyroid issues now, but, at the time I was in contact with her she was really struggling with her weight. The conventional Dr. said her thyroid was normal but she found a Dr. who put her on thyroid meds and she lost a lot of weight. I have always wondered if that would be my experience. Why were you taking Maca Root.....for your thyroid? Angie you never have been heavy though right....this is maintenance for you. You know when I read about you maintaining your weight on 1500 calories a day, I have to wonder if I am totally on the wrong track. I have been trying to lose weight eating that many calories and with a thyroid functioning on the low end. I have also not been that successful in even keeping the count down to 1500. I may need to seriously revisit what I need to do to have more success. What would a day of eating look like for you?
K10, Victoria Day is a long week-end that originally was to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. It began something like 150 years ago. No one cares about Queen Victoria or any other monarchy figure head today but, it is a good reason to have a long week-end in May Unfortunately today seemed more like a long week-end in February with the cool weather.
Debbie M. I was reading about the Hilton Head diet and I was wondering if a big part of the success people are reporting is the way Dr. Miller has incorporated 2 exercise sessions per day into the program. He claims to be correcting your metabolism by encouraging you to walk 20 minutes a day after I believe 2 of your meals. I would like to read the book to understand more fully what he is recommending but the book is out of print. There are so many favourable reviews on Amazon. I may order it from one of the used book vendors on Amazon. He isn't advocating anything strenuous, just 20 minutes of walking. I would think bike riding or whatever.
Thanks for your concern and being frustrated with me. There is a slim woman wanting to escape but I am beginning to think she will only emerge with a real cut in my calorie intake.....I hate the idea as well. Connie if you tracked your calories they may be quite low.....low calorie and exercise may be inescapable in the pursuit of weight loss.
Maybe I just need to have faith and turn it over to HIM!

Debbie M and Bronwyn I just went for my yearly physical. I did feel like I had a bug of some sort last week with fatigue and some nausia and my back ache but all of that is gone now. The Maca Root is suppose to help normalize your hormones. It takes about 3 to 6 weeks from what I have read but I have been taking it for two weeks and wondered if that might have made a difference in the second test. Time will tell. I eat on a normal day my Old Red Mill hot cereal or organic yogurt with apples and truvia or scrambled egg topped with veggie chz on half Ezekial muffin for breakfast. Lunch is usually a salad of some sort. Chicken salad with grapes or tuna salad with rice crackers or egg salad with celery on rice crackers. I eat a snack of grapes and some kind of nuts and then for dinner I usually eat baked chicken with celery and tomatoes with veggie cheese or opened face broiled tomatoe and cheese on Ezekial bread or lean hamburger pattie with spinach leaves and tomatoes and pickle. I do use a low fat mayo with olive oil. I almost always have a 100 calorie bag of OR 94% popcorn at night with olive oil spray on it.
I have never been over 20 pounds overweight but it is something I have to stay on top of. My Mother has all her weight in her stomach and if I gain that is right where it goes. She has had people ask her when she was younger when she was due. Once you gain it there it is soooo hard to get that stored fat off. I also gain muscle very easy so when I try to exercise my stomach it just pokes out that much more. So I try not to concentrate on that area but do an all over calorie burn.
Your bike riding is a great exercise. As bad as it is you have to watch your calories. There is no way around it if you want to lose weight. Watching calories and exercise is the only way. I love walking also.
It is raining and cool here. I am going to get some moppiing done. Have a great day everyone! |

Bronwyn, what does your doctor say about your sleeping patterns? It seems you would constantly be sleep deprived. There is definitely a link between poor sleep and overweight. As bad as it is I am finding that a lot of foods make me feetl bloated. Beans, soy nuts, edamame along with gluten items. I am slowly weeding all these foods out of my diet. I keep a list of allowable foods and when I find one that don't set well with me I mark it off. |

How can you possibly hate summer or loathe hot weather??? :) It is FINALLY warm here, second day in a row, and it is GLORIOUS!!!! We had a brutally cold and long winter here (Bronwyn, I can relate!). Cold weather depresses the daylights out of me and makes me want to sit in a corner in the fetal position and shove food in my face. Today I feel like I have life! :) :) :) Sorry...I'm just really excited! :0 |

Connie when I read that somehow you ended up weeding at your neighbors house for 3 hours I was thinking it was an Alzheimer moment. I just read Still Alice.....which is sad and scary. She went to her neighbors and thinking she was in her home she started to pull all the cupboards apart and reorganize things when the neighbor walked in and found her there she was shocked. I bet your are a popular woman on your block.....you are welcome here anytime
I know Diane......hate warm weather?????

Well, I guess since I helped her put the bedding plants in last year I should help her keep up with them. Really, I don't mind. She lives directly across the street from me, so I have to look at it. I have decided I'm going to work over there every morning this week until it's all done. That's the only way it will happen and there's no reason I can't do it.
I know it's weird how some people love the sun and heat, and some hate it. The year I ran I was in a 5K in the hottest month of the year. Right after we stopped at a gas station and I went in to get a candy bar. I could not talk to the cashier. I could not form a thought or a sentence. I actually tried to and embarrassed myself terribly. My husband on the other hand, was perfectly fine. I just can't do hot. I will hibernate until cool weather returns. But for you sun/heat lovers...happy days are here again. Enjoy your favorite time of the year.
Good job on the exercising all of you who did it. I hate exercise! I am not fit to discuss it. One day though! I keep saying that. But I know it will happen.
Off my feet for awhile. |

Another earthquake. I am so done with these things.
I am depressed and I feel like a lump when it is hot. I don't get the Winter blahs I get the Summer blahs.
Two people want to come look at the house tonight. One of them I can't contact, the call keeps dropping and the other one wants to come late. These people are ANNOYING me. Why must they want to come at dinner and later????? Now my husband has to miss our weight loss class because we don't want the kids to have to stay in the trailer for such a long time and we don't people to know they are home alone.
Talk to you later.

This past winter I drove to work one morning with my car temp. gauge reading thirty eight below zero...now that's cold! We went through about a two week (or more) stretch where it never made it above zero. It seems I can always cool off in the summer but I can never get warm enough in the winter, I tend to hibernate and sleep A LOT. Not good for the soul. Then we (Minnesotans) all complain that it is too cold, but we apparently aren't bright enough to move.
I need to get a little more on track with my diet, I think now that I have regained some enthusiasm things will get better. I don't plan on weighing this week, I don't think I would be happy. However, the Wii will tell me when I work out with it tonight.
K10, how are things going with your mother-in-law?
Connie, what a horrible heat related story! I am guessing heat stroke or heat exhaustion? I did that once, one hundred degrees outside and I was curled up under a quilt freezing with a high temp. Once you have an issue like that it is easy for it to happen again.
Debbie and Bronwyn, KEEP IT UP! |

What I hate most is the mosquitos. They come directly to me, missing everyone else around. I don't know what it is but they LOVE me. And when I get bit they swell up to the size of a quarter. I have them for days and they eventually scab over. I grew up in a bungalow that had a screened in porch and I loved it. We didn't have air conditioning in those days. So if it got too hot in the house and we couldn't cool it off we would sleep on the porch. Those were the days. I want a porch like that now. Bring the hot, bring the cold. It seems around here, whatever the temp is we want the other. Go figure. Just pass the bug spray please. |

My mom is the same way with mosquito bites, she gets big welts that last for days. I'm lucky, when I get bit I scratch a few times and that's about it.
K10, earthquake? Wow! That is something I have never experienced. How long did this one last? By the way, what did you think of 24 last night? It will be hard to wait until January to see what all happens.
Bronwyn, what kind of recumbant exercise bike do you have? I bought a Schwinn about a year and a half ago, I really like it. I rode tonight while watching t.v..

We have been having some earthquakes lately. We had one on Sunday that I didn't feel, but I felt this one. We had one a month or so ago that when I was sitting on the couch I thought my daughter was shaking her leg and my other daughter was in an office chair and said what was that? Today I was in the office chair and it rocked a little, I thought the cat might be scratching on it, but I looked at our trusty old earthquake detector, the ceiling fan pulls, and they were moving, so I knew.
Earthquakes feel different. Some are a sharp jolt and some roll. They can last from a few seconds to 15 or more. When you are experiencing one the time seems longer. I HATE them. I would get really scared and be upset for a while, but I have done somewhat better lately.
Last July I was in Del Taco with my daughter and her friend and one started happening. I squatted next to the table and held the girls' hands and was trying to decide if I should have them get under the table or not. The menu boards opened up and it was a pretty shakey one. I looked up to see what was above us and thought we were far enough from the window. We ended up getting our meal to go. Typical of Californians we just kept on going on with our day.
My husband was at work for the one in July in a concrete building with large windows and they flexed. He said that was weird and he wondered if they would break. What is weird is how far they can be felt. You can go online and check for the earthquakes that have happened and big they were.
I lost .6 pounds. I figure with what I am dealing with in my life right now, if I lose or maintain I am happy. I am going to try harder though and try to exercise more. |

Diane: I wasn't as impressed with this season, but I did watch it every week. I liked how they showed how emotional women can be and it confirmed my belief of women not being in those kinds of leadership postitions. I hope I didn't offend anyone, but that is how I feel. What did you think about it? I always hate that we have to wait until January and then it comes so quickly. Usually there is a teaser for next season, but not this time. I am sure it was because of the writers strike last year. |

Debbie, don't apologize for talking about salvation. It's just that I thought maybe you got something out of those verses that I wasn't getting. People look at houses after work because they have good jobs and they are the ones with good credit, hopefully, and can buy your house. When people look through the week after work, it means they are serious. It is getting harder for investors to buy rentals now, I am finding out. They need 25% down, making it harder for foreclosures to sell. |

Its 12:15 here and I've been to bed and up already twice. Husbands got the Jimmy legs tonight. He moves them about every 15 seconds. Drives me nuts. At least he dosn't snore anymore. He used to snore so loud I would be angry. Sounded like each breath got louder and louder. I tried a lot of different things to get him to stop. Nothing worked so I would have to leave the room and sleep on the couch. Since his gastric bypass he snores no more. Thank goodness. But the legs go about 4 or 5 times a month. |

Story:
Philosophical Differences: $50
I asked my friend's little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be president of the United State some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?" She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.' Her parents beamed, and said, "Welcome to the Democrat Party!"
"Wow...what a worthy goal!" I told her. I continued, "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house, mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out. You can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.' She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, 'Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?' I smiled and said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

K10 earthquakes sound so scary. Do you have a 72 hour emergency kit?
Diane my husband grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and I have been there at Christmas when it was 48 below and even colder with a wind chill. The air was just a heavy white hanging freezing mass. Because we get lots of chinooks here we seldom have that kind of weather just come and stay for weeks whereas in Manitoba it can be weeks of that kind of weather. Here we only usually get a couple of weeks in the winter that are like in the minus 30's. But I can't even stand to go out.....I hate it.....I get so chilled to the bone. Now on the other hand I have never lived anywhere that was hot, hot, hot all of the time so I don't know if I would like that or not.
In my post earlier today that disappeared I was warning you to be ware of socialized medicine. You do not want a Canadian style medical system. I am too tired to tell you all the reasons I put in my post that didn't make it onto the board but, do be wary of anyone telling you socialized medicine is a good thing.
I did well at the restaurant.....wasabi salmon, stirfry veggies and rice (mind you it was white and who knows if the stirfry had sugar).

| posted 20-May-2009 11:25am
I had typed in a post and it did not submit. The first time that has happened to me.
The Red Cross website and your local chapter has information on the kits you should have at home, at work, AND in your car. You have to be prepared all 3 places. You need $200 or more in $1 bills so you can buy things if the power is off. The Red Cross is laying off people so it is your job to take care of yourself when a disaster comes. They may be able to get to you, but most likely it will be neighbor helping neighbor. After the ice storm here it took 3 days in the dead of winter for the Natl Guard to be called out. By that time many elderly didn't make it. |

It is frustrating when you lose your post.
K10 I understand that Costco has good 24 hour kits or you can go to different web sites like Hilda mentioned and put your own together. My friend has a great one and she is really good at rotating the contents. Every fall and spring she gets her husband and her two girls emergency kits out and they eat the items they have put in the kit and then replenish it again. |

I got the words Jimmy legs from the show Seinfeld. Thats what Kramer called them. :o) I can feel the PMS coming on, just in time for camping. I don't dare get on the scaled now as it will be higher for sure. I can't win for losing. Now an invitation came in the email for my nephews commencement this weekend. Both my parents and I will be out camping. I asked her a long time ago but she never responded for sure. Just a statement that this was the grad weekend. The official party will be June 14th. We will be in Mossouri. I hate to miss it. But itf we come back to town on Sunday for the commencement we will drive 6 hours. 3 there and 3 back. Then the next day, Memorial Day come home. What do you think, what would you do?

Debbie: You asked ahead of time and they weren't even sure if he was going to graduate? If he had great grades and was being honored with something I might go, but I think that I would keep my plans the way they are. But, family situations can cause so many extended problems. Why would a school have graduation on a holiday weekend? How stupid. Graduations are so boring. You go to see one person and have to sit through all this other stuff. Can you tell I don't like them? I think under the circumstances I would be understanding if my family couldn't come, since it is so last minute. You are in pickle aren't you? I think it would be more important to go to the open house, but you already have plans for that right? Could you change those? I just re-read this and I don't think I even helped you. How understanding is your sister?
On a lighter note. My mother-in-law is home. :) |

Debbie , this is just my opinion. Personally, if it is not my child graduating, I'm not going to the ceremony. The open house is another story. I would explain to your sister that it is way too late notice to change your plans for this weekend. Then I would present her with a check to give your nephew after he graduates. The open house I would really try to attend. If you can't, then I would arrange for a separate party to celebrate with him. Maybe have him over for bbq or something. That is how we do it in my family. |

Stayed NFNS. Too many Triscuits yesterday and today. I won't be buying them for a while. I need to stay away from chips and crackers for a while.
I had a yummy smoothie this morning. 1 cup of plain yogurt, 1 banana, and 1 1/2 cups or so of frozen mixed fruit. Very filling. The fruit was strawberries, mango, pineapple and peaches. It wasn't very sweet on its own so I thought I would use it this way.
