You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

Chopped Salad.....all kinds of veggies...whatever you like.....I usually chop broccoli, cauliflower, red pepper and any other colour of peppers as well, cucumber, onion, kalamata olives,,,,,and then chop feta, Blue cheese or cheddar (your choice)........mix it all together (I do a fine chop.....by hand....not hard but a little time consuming). I do a big batch and it keeps in the fridge for like 4 days or so. When you eat it you could also add some chopped tomato and avocado, a sprinkle of sunflower seeds or whatever. You could top with a little salad dressing or an oil vinagrette. The basic chop are veggies that last long......add in more perisable ones when you eat it. Take a NFNS wrap and warm in a frying pan....both sides. Spread with a rosted red pepper hummus or baba ganoush and then top with the chopped vegetable salad and dressing if you choose or more cheese and then wrap and enjoy.....yummy!!!!

Debbie M: The things I usually make while camping are One Pot which has different kinds of canned beans, ground hamburger (turkey or beef), bacon, onion, brown sugar (Splenda with brown sugar the last time I made it), ketchup (no sugar added). It is kind of like baked beans with meat. Now I would just use Splenda only. Hamburgers, I didn't use the buns last time. Chicken or steaks. Sandwiches, I use Ezekiel bread. Cheese and Triscuits or chips and salsa for snacks. Fruits and veggies. We always have eggs and bacon/sausage and hash browns. Probably a veggie scramble one morning.

I am going shopping when I get there. There are stores nearby. I am going to go to Henry's market. I will be making crab dip for a group snack dinner time. My extended family always requests it. I usually serve it with Wheat Thins. I will buy those, but I will buy Triscuits for me and my hubby. I am going to buy OJ for my treat and I may buy Pistachios. Salami and cheese is sounding good too. I will see what strikes my fancy. I will stay NFNS though.

I looked up snarky and here is what I found.

From dictionary dot com:

snark⋅y  /ˈsn¨»rki/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [snahr-kee] Show IPA
¨Cadjective, snark⋅i⋅er, snark⋅i⋅est. Chiefly British Slang. testy or irritable; short.

Origin:
1910¨C15; dial. snark to nag, find fault with (appar. identical with snark, snork to snort, snore, prob. < D, LG snorken to snore

I like this word. I was rather snarky the other day as I had PMS.

Connie: I hope this new car lasts as long as your other one. What kind did you get?

Debster: I haven't heard from the bank yet. They have 10-15 days to let us know. You can do this one step at a time. I agree with Connie, just worry about NFNS first and then worry about calories and quantity.

HILDA WHERE ARE YOU? ARE YOU OK?

Good night ladies.

I am laughing out loud about you Bronwyn. Snarkey, what a hoot!!!!

Hilda is that you, Miss Anonymous? I told you up there about the popcorn. You must have missed it. Put a handful of popcorn in a brown paper bag. (lunch size) fold the edge over and microwave it on your popcorn setting. Thats it! No oil.

Debster the advise you are getting from the above is awesome. Just doing the NFNS is key. IT will bring about a chemical change in your blood sugar that will make you want to eat this way. At first it's will power. But after a while its Heady Power!

All your camping dinner ideas sound good. We do make an all day stew in the crock pot sometimes too. Its nice to get back from the beach or from hiking and have a delicious healthy meal ready.

I would totally love to visit the parks you mentioned about. That would be quite the travel plan with the camper. We would have to get a more powerful tow vehicle befor e a trip like that could be planned.

I wish everyone was on the map. Have you all seen the map on the other site?

Morning. I could have used a couple of hours more sleep but the dogs wouldn't hear of it. The darlings...ugh!

I don't know why, but I really wondered who requested the recipes. Is that you Hilda? I hope so. We are starting to worry because you haven't checked in. Let us know.

All this talk of camping is making me want to get away. But it kind of sounds like the food prep is a lot. Worth it I'm sure.

My husbands car is a 2005 Cadillac CTS or CST. It has the bigger motor in it. And he left it home this morning so I am going to go drive it. I didn't drive it last night. I hope he is happy with it. He feel in love with a used 2008 Lexus on the lot...it was 31,000! Not happening. I said when daughter is out of school he should get one. He said when daughter is out of school he is going to get a BMW. Well I had no idea he was so "into fast cars." He drives like an old man as a rule...pokey to the point of absurd. Maybe that was because the van was so old. Anyway, we bought the car at carmax and he has 5 days to return it if he changes his mind.

I will post a picture on the map, I just haven't had time yet. I think I'll jump in the car and drop off some local bills.

I don't know how to post on the map or pics on the other site and I keep forgetting to ask my kids to help me. BTW Debbie M.......not only did you not coin snarkey but you may have picked it up from just being in association with mesmile I read that snarkey is a common British and Canadian term that has only become popular in the States in the past 5 years or so and that it may have been picked up by reading British or Canadian columnists. Actually the truth be told you brought it back to mind as I don't recall using it lately at all. I hope you don't feel I have been snarkey in pointing this out to you?

Today I wanted to have my car so I drove my daughter to work at 5:30. I have a bone density test this afternoon. After I dropped her off they were talking about some global awards that Waterton National Park had won because of it's beauty and authenticity as a real get away. Although I grew up close to WAterton I now live close to Banff. Banff is really well known and very touristy. Waterton has a very back to nature and non-touristy feel to it. They have done the development that has taken place in other National Parks and Waterton remains more natural. My first job was as chamber maid at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton......it is such a landmark.....stands stately on a large hill overlooking the beautiful and very cold Waterton Lake. Within Waterton Park there are lots of interesting very natural places to go. Anyways I love Waterton and I will quit all about that now.

I have been using the word snarkey to my kids although I never new what it meant. I just thought it was a funny sounding owrd. We get very silly around here. I'm sure outsiders would think we were a little strange the way we carry on. I LOVE the word. IT makes me smile. So just BE snarkey Bronwyn. Still not getting a signal on the T.V. in my exercise room so I put on a music DVD.....Eric Clapton and I were both sweating. I only made it half an hour today but I really worked. Wendy chant of "Conquer the Fat code"....said to not do arm exercises as well while riding a stationary bike. I have no idea about these things so I will have to take advise from someone who claims to know. She also wants you to exercise (cardio) on an empty stomach....okay I did that as well. Now I am having a low carb protein shake....no sugar. Honestly I usually hate protein shakes but I will try it and hopefully not waste a bunch of calories on something I hate. I also would like to add in some strength training a couple of days a week so we will see.

Everyone having a NFNS day!?!?!?!?

Connie we have an old pathfinder....1995 with a ton of miles on it. I would have to figure the miles out but it has almost 500 kilometers on it. My daughter has it down in the States at school. I couldn't believe we let her drive it down there. She really just uses it in her little town where she goes to school and puts it in storage in the summer. This is her last year at school so if it makes it through we will call "haul a junk" and have it picked up. I never wanted her to drive it out of town though.....just for running to campus and the grocery store. It did have a new transmission and engine about 200 kilometers ago. Personally I think you can keep a Nissan running a long time.....I have never had that kind of luck with domestic cars. My son has had my Maxima for 2 or 3 years and when he got it, it already had almost 300 kilometers on it without any repairs.....just regular maintenance. He ran it back and forth between here and the states while he was in school. He is still driving it and says it is doing really well. I am sure it will have some trouble not too far down the road though......hope not.

I left the DVD running n the other room.....just moved into a great exercise song....I could almost get back on my bike or maybe just dance smile

Okay to make my protein shake drinkable I added 1 cup milk and some frozen strawberries. So by the time I got this put together I was at 250 calories. Anyone here know anything about protein drinks.....I just don't know why I should drink them instead of just eating for the same calories food. A 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese is 16 grams protein and a serving of this is shake has 23. What do you guys think about this kind of stuff. I have never been a big protein bar or shake kind of a person but Wendy Chant promotes it as 1 or 2 of her 5 meals a day kind of a plan????

I'm guessing maybe the protein shake has to do with "building blocks" for your muscles on an exercise regimen. Also, it makes for a much better alternative than a carb loaded meal when losing weight. You are doing so amazingly with your exercise. I still haven't opened my new exercise dvd. I haven't had a chance.

My daughter drives my old car...a 1993 olds 98. It's a tank! And it is UGLY. She isn't allowed a car at school, so she only uses it when she's home. And she complains about it all the time. So yesterday on the car lot she was having a fit over the vehicles. It was perfect...I looked at her and said, "well, if you had a couple of good semesters under your belt your dad would probably consider it." Ooch! She hates being reminded of her poor school performances when I can nail her with it. Oh, it was sweet. She said we had to go back there next year and she will have done so well in school we will buy her one

After Steve had his bypass surgery they stressed getting enough protein. His stomach was so small at first he could not eat it. So he drank protein drinks. They are gross. We found one he could tolerate until he could eat more. I really don't think anyone needs to worry about getting enough protein but GBypass people and body builders. I would rather have the cottage cheese. Smoothies are good tasting but they can add up in calories and unless you are substituting them for a meal I think they can be too caloric. ALthough highly nutritional. When I make a smoothie I have plans to share it with my kids. They will drink it because I made it for me and it puts things in their bodies they wouldn't ordinarily eat. Just my snarkey 2 cents.

Protein will "repair" your muscles after a strenuous workout and will turn the muscle you are creating into lean muscle. Even after you are done exercising (if it is strength training), your body continues to build muscle which boosts your metabolism. Protein bars are hard to find without sugar, but I know they exist.

Guess what, today when I went for my bone density test she made me stand on the scale. I was fully dressed and had had the big protein shake (2 glasses) and 2 glasses of water. Her scale registered me 5 lbs. lighter than my scale at home. I had weighed first thing this morning and so I knew what my scales said.....undressed and first thing in the morning. I was given some paper work to fill in and I thought what the heck, I am only going to admit to being 5 lbs. lighter than I weighed this morning. It made so little difference but I have a hard admitting to the actual weight. I guess I wasn't suppose to fill that part in so she said sorry you will have to get on the scales. I stood on the scales and she said, well what do you know right on the money. It is insignificant but I was so happy to weigh what I had written down smile.....not that I was excited about the weight I wrote down but you know.

The protein shake lasted me a long time....too long. I wasn't at home and I hadn't taken any snacks. All the sudden I was famished.......like your daughter last night Connie. It was almost 5 when I thought I have to have something. I ate 3 or 4 satsumas oranges (they are very small and yummy) and I bought some cheese packets. Then we had a really late dinner.....beef tenderloin steaks, new potatoes, chop salad and corn on the cob. All in all I think I ate more by waiting so long to eat.

I really like the Asian chicken wraps but all the Asian dressings I know of have sugar in them. Were you okay after though....not starving quickly after eating (even though you felt stuffed after eating). I find I get so full when I eat the Vietnamese food (which I am sure has sugar in the sauce) but that I am hungry soon again after.

Connie I missed the story about your daugher's ankle.....what happened? I am very sympathetic about ankle problems. That is how I first found out I had bone density issues....osteropenia. I fell down and crushed every bone in my ankle. That is no a normal response to falling down so they did tests. I had a huge cast on and couldn't weight bear for 2 months. My ankle is still full of plates and screws.

Let's celebrate Bronwyns broken scale!! What a nice suprise for you. My doc's scale always seems to weigh more than mine at home. You were lucky.
When do you get your bone density test results?
Funny you asked about getting hungry soon after being so full. I got a craving for something to eat soon after. I had some corn chips. I thought it was odd that I wanted to eat at that time especially after eating not that long ago. I guess that was the sugar talking. I should have made a better choice.

Connie make sure your daughter eats some yogurt everyday. The antibiotics will be no good for her intestinal flora. Try to fine ones with added probiotics to them. Have her eat them everyday. I don't want what happened to me to happen to her.

Sleep well everyone. I hope you're sleeping B. I'm going back to bed.

I hate the next day when I don't sleep.....it is so totally dragging your tail feathers kind of a day. It seems the older I get that if I have one little tiny thought on my mind when I go to bed that I am toast. Last night I was thinking about my bone density test. I already have osteopenia but the way she acted after my test yesterday I would think it has advanced. I know when I lie down at night I am more aware of my lower spine and find it harder to get in a position that feels comfortable.

I guess it is time most of you are getting up.....not K10, it is only 3:54 where you are. So hopefully you all had a good night sleep and I still hope to get in a couple of hours,

Connie one of the disadvantages of living out in the country is how many miles you put on your vehicles. I have a 2008 jeep with 60,000 kilometers on it. It had 18,000 k's on it when I bought it. I always think it sounds so weird when they say 60,000 miles or 7 years (which ever comes first).......my vehicles are off warranty before or by 2 years. My youngest son drives my Mum's 1993 Chrysler New Yorker. He is the only one of my kids that would ever drive it ...... it is totally a Grandma car. I think he is very lucky to have a vehicle to drive but, he is starting to ask for my car more frequently as well. I do worry about the safety of a car that is that old but, the mileage on it isn't that bad.

FYI......

The Danger of Soy Products

Myth #6: “Soy products are a health food (especially for women).”

As more and more data has emerged in recent years about the dangers of eating a diet rich in animal products, soy product offerings have exploded at health food and other grocery stores as a “wonder food.” They include soy protein powders and bars and meat replacements (hot dogs, burger patties, and more). America’s soybean growers have hit the motherlode and now sell waste products of the soybean as “soy isolate protein powder”: this food is refined, processed, and separated from the whole food. Even the whole food is problematic, and the danger of soy product must come to light.

We have been told the Japanese have lower rates of breast, uterus, and prostate cancer, and that is attributed to high soy consumption. Unfortunately, Japanese people (and Asians) have higher rates of esophageal, pancreatic, liver, and stomach cancers. Soy causes these cancers in lab animals. Also, the Japanese tend to eat fermented whole-soy products such as miso, tempeh, and tofu-not refined products made from soy oil and isolated proteins.

The isoflavones in soy cause toxicity in estrogen-sensitive tissues and depress thyroid function, causing decreased metabolism as well as other thyroid diseases. Soy products now in virtually everything at the grocery store (breads, spaghetti sauce, cookies, even canned tuna) contribute to the epidemic of both diagnosed—and an estimated 10 million undiagnosed—thyroid problems. Most thyroid problems are in women over 40, and soy’s thyroid-depressing effects are likely contributing to the rise in obesity.

Soy lowers testosterone levels in men and causes malnutrition, especially in babies and children drinking soy milk or soy formula. Dozens of studies show that soy causes reproductive problems, immune problems, and cognitive decline. Doctors and researchers including Andrew Weil, Mary Enig, Kaayla T. Daniel, FDA advisors, and many others caution against soy consumption.

Fact: Soy is not a good alternative to meat and should be avoided because it promotes disease. Of particular concern are soy formulas for babies, soy protein powders and bars, soy-based hormone creams for women, and anything that features “soy isolate protein powder” or other non-fermented, refined products. The danger of soy product is coming to light, but many operate under the assumption that it is a nutritious food, especially for protein.

Debster it was Diane that did the other website not me. I don't have that much computer skills. The site is nfnsfamily.ning She did a very good job on it. Bronwyn good news on the scales. They called me from the doctor's office yesterday to tell me I was low in vitamin D. I told them no way. I take 1000u of D3 in my multivitmin and I am out in the sun all the time. My husband and I are going to the beach tomorrow. We live about 15 minutes from the most beautiful white sand beach. It is mostly retired people. I hate the beaches with all the young people acting so crazy and wearing their thongs. If I had the body for a thong I couldn't wear it. There are some things that only your husband should see. The only thing about keeping my weight down is that it keeps my butt down too. Down my leg!!!!! My husband loves butts so I told him he sure married the wrong person. He just laughs. He is so precious and loves me just as I am. Anyway, I don't know why they would say I was low in vitamin D but I am not taking in more than I am now. I believe it was just an off reading. I will see what happens at the next check up.

I have a 2005 ford F150 and my husband has a 1994 corvette that looks as good as the day he drove it off the lot. We only get it out about once ever 2 months and said if things really got tight it would be the first to go. He drives a van from work so that really helps on the gas and insurance bills.

Has anyone else had trouble with this switch to digital TV? We are on cable and it is messing up all the time. I don't know if it is just them trying to get the kinks out or what but it is very SNARKEY! There, I had to get mine in. Debbie I do think your weight could be influenced by eating out......Asian food and maybe all restaurant food is so high in sodium. I am sure you are retaining some water. The next myth under the soy one was really interesting about food labels and how we can be deceived even when we do read the label. There are so many other names for MSG that we may not recognize the food we are buying has MSG in it. That could be another reason for weight gain after eating out.....MSG.

I was hoping the eating out/soduim/msg thing was responsible. We will see what tomorrow holds.

I have this whole day ahead of me and don't know what to do with it. I have a ton of work to do but who wants to do that?

Steve weeded a snarkey flower bed right next to the patio in the back yard. So I think its fair that I clear off the patio to make the area complete. Sweep and clean the glass table. Put away various things that don't belong. There arent really any flowers there. Just several yucka plants that were already there when we moved in. They have shot up some stalks that are about to bloom. THere was one volunteer tomato plant I was thrilled to find but I think he accidentally pulled it up.

Morning all. I slept pretty good last night night. It could have been better, could have been worse. I would have loved to try and go back to sleep, but I have to take the new car back so they can rotate and align the tires. I sure wish my husband could do that, but he can't get away from work.

My daughter injured her ankle while playing on her HS tennis team. That was 3 or 4 years ago. Now it is just extremely vulnerable. It doesn't take much, a slight twist or something like that, and she can't walk on it. She had an xray at the doctors, but that didn't confirm anything. The next step will be an mri. The worst part is she has a lead on a job at a hardware store and should they call in the next couple of days she would be limping in for an interview.

The last couple of days I have not had any cheese. Not intentionally, it's just sort of happened. I did have a double serving of refried beans the other night from Taco Bell. The result is this morning is I weighed in at 141.6. A new all time low. It will not last, I always end up at 144 for most of my weigh ins. But I am closer to a occasional weigh in of the 130's. That would be so unbelievable!

Debbie, the scales do go up and down a bit. Weighing everyday is working for you...after you see the scales go up, you can watch your intake until it goes back down. Not a problem.

Bronwyn, how old are your scales? Maybe it's time for some new ones. My old scales were weighing me 5 lbs under what my new one's read. Daughters trip to the doc confirmed our scales are correct.

I had to laugh at the thong views. Several years ago (when I was a size 14) I decided I would try on a pair. My daughter had been trying to get me to do it for years. When your tall and wide, as I was then, good bum coverage is not easy to find. So one day after laundry I grabbed a pair of my daughters most modest thongs (an oxymoron if ever there was one!) and tried them one. Well, yuck! I told her when she came home. Good afternoon Everyone.....I am at work and I just got a chance to check in. I had chinese food yesterday and it must have been full of salt or MSG because I am so swollen today it is pathetic. My legs are so painful and even my rings are tight. I am going to try to stay away from stupid Chinese food from now on.....

Connie, I am glad your legs are better...how are they looking today?

Hilda, good for you...keep busy.

Your thong conversations are cracking (get it???) me up.

Okay Bronwyn....you are officially on. I am inspired by your amazing efforts and I feel that if you and the rest of this "snarkey" bunch can do this NFNS thing I am going to make a 100% effort...and I mean it! I am going to buy a new scale tonight....unfortunately, one that weighs over the 300 pound mark, but I won't be over 300 for long.

I honestly think we were bamboozled by information coming from parties with conflicting interests (people wanting to sell soy beans).

Made it home. Legs feel fine...look terrible still. We ended up at the mall while we waited on the car and there are so many cute sun dresses out. Oh, I want to wear a sun dress. I am a dress kind of girl!

Something funny happened. We were shopping a Penney's, where my daughter had worked part time for a couple of years, and she decided she needed some undies. Ok, she picked them out and had them waded up in her hands. Remember, she wears thongs so they squished right down. Lot's of the staff were stopping to say hi to her and she didn't want them to see what she was buying. She also didn't want to be checked out by someone she knew. We walked through the store until we found a new person. We were almost checked out when an employee spotted daughter from a ways off. She yelled "Holly, whatcha buying?" Daughter froze and finally said "unmentionable's." By that time we had a lot of attention. So much for buying undies under the radar! She was very red faced.

We went to whole foods for lunch. We picked up a few items but they didn't have any Ezek waffles! I don't know where to find any.

Time for some housework.

this is the Kiwi of which I speak:

ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit

ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit is the most recent addition to the ZESPRI® Kiwifruit family and differs from it’s GREEN cousin in that it has a smooth hairless skin that is bronze in colour, a golden flesh interior, and a white core with black seeds.

Taste-wise, ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit has a sweet, uniquely tropical taste with a luscious, silky and very juicy texture that makes it a real favourite with both children and adults. Similar to ZESPRI® GREEN Kiwifruit, ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit contains many of the same vitamins and minerals as ZESPRI® GREEN Kiwifruit, but with slightly higher levels of vitamin E and folate.

ZESPRI® GOLD Kiwifruit is a unique cultivar, and was naturally bred from one seedling planted in 1992. Now, over 1,000 hectares of GOLD vines are planted around the world exclusively for ZESPRI under assigned Plant Variety Rights.

OMG, Bronwyn and Debbie...you guys crack me up! Thank you for adding some humor to my day.

I had a really big tossed salad and some Italian salad for lunch. The Italian salad is pretty much cheese with a few seasonings and I ate a lot of it. So I am not hungry. I will want something before I go to bed, so I'll have some cereal with some fruit on it. No one will be home for dinner but me. I like having a bowl of cereal for dinner sometimes... it really hits the spot.

We went to Barnes and Noble today. I can never get out of there cheaply! But I'm set for books to read for awhile. I really don't have anything I'm excited about, just some stuff to occupy my mind before bed.

My poor dogs, stuck in the house all day. I need to feed them and take them out to play.

Okay I had forgotten about that....I used to do that like 25 years ago....blender pancakes with the whole grains. I am not sure.....sometimes I think there isn't any difference and I also tend to think neither is unhealthy. Help with the confusion.
Connie
posted 5-Jun-2009 9:27pm

I am completely ignorant about this stuff. But my first impression is that the blending doesn't make things as "fine" an end product as grinding or milling. Could that be the difference? I'm thinking the batter would be courser. I don't know. I couldn't find anything about whole wheat grain. I did browse through some of the testimonials and one said her grocery spending was cut from over $100 weekly to under 20. I can't imagine how that could be. Maybe I read it wrong. Anyway, I am going to try the pancakes using rolled oats and millet. I have no idea what millet is, but I'm going to find some.

Today my daughter told me she's so regular it's scary. I attribute that to the NF aspect. And she has increased her fruit consumption. But I would love to be able to find more "treats" that don't have F in them to replace some of the semi regular (no pun intended) foods we used to enjoy...like pancakes and waffles and muffins. When I watched Oprah the other day, the biggest loser was eating waffles. I assumed they were Ezek, but I couldn't find them. So what were they? Ever since seeing the show I have been wanting some. I will make the blender pancakes this weekend if I can find millet.

We planted a forest in our back yard yesterday. 5 trees and transplanted a pine from one side of the yeard to the other. 4 are Pear trees that bloom white flowers in the spring and one is a Red Bud. I'm sure Steve will be tired today as he did all the digging.

Good for you, resisting so much temptation. It does get easier, doesn't it? Be sure and eat before you go to your open houses. Something with protein to hold you over. Then you can nibble on some veggies. Cake, yuck! Take a good look at it and consider what you see. White flour and sugar. Or, glue and junk candy. Taking a break form housework...it's starting to look much better around here.

My mom has pseudo gout. She is having so many problems right now that I believe are directly related to her diet long term. I really really believe good nutrition is more than what you eat...it's equally what you don't eat. Inflammation can hurt our bodies in so many ways. And flour and sugar cause so much inflammation. We are very fortunate to have begun this eating plan before we suffer many of their devastating side effects.

Dr. Weil's comments on why we should eat walnuts:

A mainstay of my dietary recommendations, walnuts are an excellent choice when it comes to healthy snacking. Walnuts:

1. Are a good vegetarian source of omega-3 fatty acids, protective fats that promote cardiovascular health, help maintain optimal cognitive function, and tone down inflammation.
2. Provide heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
3. Contain ellagic acid, an antioxidant compound that helps support a healthy immune system.
4. Yield high levels of l-arginine, an essential amino acid which promotes healthy blood pressure.

I teach my cooking with beans class on Thursday. I am still trying to put together some fun and different ideas for the class. What I am trying to promote is....food that can be stored, food that is healthy and food that is some what budget conscious. I have tons of ideas but nothing solid......like I haven't put my ideas together into how I would present it in my class. I think there will be about 30-40 people. I also haven't decided which of the many dishes I have considered making to actually make for them to sample. I also have to pull together recipes for hand outs. That is hard for me because I don't follow recipes......I get inspired by recipes and then I do whatever I want, with whatever I have. So in view of that it is hard to me to give accurate and exact recipes. I also want to make beans kind of cool and sexy not the boring concept that lots of people have about beans. My contention is that you can increase the fibre and nutrition in lots of your regular recipes by adding in some beans. I add beans to soups, stews and salads......just as a matter of course whether they are called for or not. Anyways I have a busy week ahead with trying to pull this together.

Connie there are lots of grains you can use....don't get hung up on millet. Check the stand with the Bob's red Mill bags on them.....you should find a millet there. Millet is an ancient grain that has been a staple food for other countries for centuries. In North America we put it in our bird feed and really don't incorporate it into our everyday diet as a rule. I have used millet a little bit but not too much. I have a really nice muffin I like it in. Millet is highly nutritious, it is gluten free and is very digestible. The one thing I did learn though when I taught a class on few years ago on using unusual grains is that millet......(just a minute I need to refer to my notes so that i get this right)....contains small amounts of of goiterogenic substances that limit uptake of iodine the thyroid. In large amounts these "thyroid function inhibitors" can cause goiter and some researchers feel this may explain, at least in part, the perplexing correlation between millet consumption and goiter incidence in some of the developing countries where millet constitutes a significant part of their diet. There is no reason for you personally to be alarmed by this.....you eat a balanced diet and millet can be a part of a balanced and nutritious diet without any concern. Just mention this in case you decide to abandon all other food groups and eat millet for every meal. YOu could make your millet pancakes even more nutritious by sprouted your millet before you start the process outlined by Sue gRegg.

Anyways millet is a good choice but if you can more easily find quinoa, buckwheat or various other grains you could use those instead.

Hello ladies, I am back. Hubby is taking a nap and we still have unloading to do in the trailer, but he had to work a long day yesterday.

Here is my food confession for the weekend. I had two pieces of cheesecake not in the same day though. I had two wonderful tasting pancakes this morning. Those pancakes are the one thing I have craved since starting NFNS. I didn't put syrup on them, just butter. So now I am done with wanting pancakes. I wasn't tempted at all by the birthday cake or any of the cakes at the graduation parties.

Food is such an important part of this weekend and I am glad it is over. I think I pretty much did all right other than what was mentioned above. I did eat more than I normally would. Practically everyone that I went with drinks alcohol the whole time. I had one taste of wine and I am happy to say, I still don't like it.

On the more positive front, I saw the inside of our future home. It is nice and large. One of the negatives I see is two of the bedrooms are rather small and two are large. Ours will definitely be bigger and we will have our own sinks and bathroom. The two bedrooms that are next to ours are quite small. On the other side of the house is a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom combination. I think that will become our library, Wii, and TV room. I just can't justify letting my oldest have such a significantly larger bedroom than her sister. Another downer is the shower has clear glass and you can see yourself in the mirror. YUCK!!!!!!!

It has a large backyard, the kitchen has a lot of cabinets and a double oven, the laundry room is right by the bedrooms and there is another bathroom right there as well. It has a living room/dining room combination and a family room off of the kitchen. I think our travel trailer will fit on the driveway and I saw another home that had an RV on it's driveway, so that makes me think there isn't an ordinance saying you can't park in the driveway.

The house also has window shutters instead of blinds. It is nice and bright and has a nice view. I am somewhat concerned about the possibility of fires in the hills, but I just have to trust that the LORD will protect us. We aren't supposed to worry right?

I loved the talk of thongs. I myself have never worn one. I always try to keep my undies out of my crack. Sorry about the wisecrack. HEHE!

My friend has a home carpet cleaner that is new and she likes it.

I need to introduce more beans into my diet. I hate how gassy I can get when I eat beans and greens. Nice poetic rhyme don't you think? Toot toot!!! :)

I missed checking in this weekend, but I had a nice time and bought some wonderful balsamic vinegars. One is a white balsamic and the other is a pomegranate balsamic.

Talk to you all later.

K10, Having the laundryroom by the bedrooms is great. Your house sounds very family friendly. I'm glad you were pleased. Now you can dream about where everything will go and label your boxes as to which room they will go in. Some people color code their boxes. You put a color on the door frame and then all the boxes with that color go in that room. When moving day comes your helpers just put those boxes in those rooms. I heard this works well.

Morning all. My computer seems to be working much better. Yesterday was frustrating...it just wouldn't connect. I missed you all!

142.6 this morning. Today is the first day that everyone will be gone for any length of time and I can have the house to myself for awhile. Ahhhhh!

K10, the house sounds so wonderful, lot's of room. Don't let yourself get too wore out. Debbie's idea sounded wonderful. Is there any news on the buyer? Does it usually take this long? I guess Hilda would be the one to answer that question.

Bronwyn, did you find the bean desserts? I just read a dessert on sparkspeople for crustless pumpkin pie. Yum!

Some of the scabs on my legs are falling off. The spider veins themselves have now turned a deep purple color. Maybe that is their last hurrah before they disappear. My legs only hurt now when I push on the sore spots, like when shaving. So really, the discomfort lasted 8 days. Not bad.

Looks like rain today, and hot...90. Uugh! I'll be staying inside as much as possible.

Good job on maintaining your weight Connie. I'm proud of you. Your success is inspiring.
I was 189.5 today. I have remained NFNS and there has been steady progress. Only a month ago I was over 200. I don't ever want to be there again.
It rained here last night and its warm and muggy. Forcast says more rain today but its sunny right now.
Catch you all later. Have a good one.

Thanks Connie I did find the desserts. I am not sure how good they will be and I only plan to make one of them. In fact I found one on the food network a black bean brownie that I thought sounded a little more promising. That one had some almond meal in it. The almond meal may give the dish a better texture and consistency. Overall I am not doing desserts just bean dishes and sprouting beans. I thought the dessert one would be fun though.

I am actually feeling a little overwhelmed as I have so much to do this week. We are having some people over tonight and so today I need to get my work done here. All in all it is fun just stressful. I need to narrow down what I am going to teach and what dishes I want to demo.

Sounds like things are going well for all of you NFNS'ers. K10...., I don't think you failed I think you went camping and had some of the things that were there. The important part is that it is a very infrequent thing and that it doesn't weaken your efforts in continuing with your progress. I think any program needs to have some allowance for life......the life you have choosen is NFNS and if you are that almost 90 (95) to 100% of the time then you will succeed. I think we can't feel defeated when we have something not on the program because then we give up and feel a failure. Feeling like a failure is the surest way to be a failure......it is only failure when you give up and quit. I think this is one of the biggest contributing factors to diets failing.....thinking you have to be perfect or the game is over.

Debbie M. what a cute story about the gold fish. I love surprises like that.

Bronwyn: Thanks for the encouragement. I don't feel like I have failed, because in the past I would have just kept on eating poorly the whole day and I didn't do that. That is such an improvement for me.

Connie: The house thing is so different with a short sale I guess. I am thinking we should know something this week maybe. I am glad your legs are feeling better.

On Thursday morning I weighed 175.3 and this morning I weighed 175.8. I can handle half a pound after a 4 day weekend. I am trying to decide what to have for breakfast. It is 10 a.m. here and I went for my walk with my friend. I think I will have eggs.

I will check in later.

Bronwyn, I saw the black bean recipe and read the "consistency" comments as well. It really made me wonder. But the cinnamon cake sounded so good! I may add some almond meal to it and see what happens.

My daughter has stopped on her way home from school for some hulled millet, and some rice pasta, and some Ezek english muffins. I really wish I lived closer to that store. When she gets here we are going to go to at&t and get some new cell phones. We treat cell phones like we do cars, run them into the ground. It's time. I found one that has the look of a jitterbug. Big numbers and all that. Just what I need.

K10, after being on this board for awhile, I have come to believe that NFNS comes in stages to most people. Then something clicks and your whole hog. I am going to push you to stay NFNS all the time. At least until you get rid of some weight. But I'm also going to congratulate you for being so strong over the weekend and making good choices. Did anyone comment about your new diet? Most people I tell have a negative reaction when I discuss it. If only they knew how great it is. It makes me think most people grew up like I did, very limited in food choices. So...atta girl!

And Debbie...how great is your weight loss? Isn't it wonderful? I need to see what my daughters weight has gone down to.

My husband visited with an old friend over the weekend. This was the husband who, along with his wife, had lost 40 in 6 months doing NFNS and then gave it up because they missed mac and cheese. Actually, I think if the wife would have hung with it, he would have too. She is a stay at home wife and does all the cooking. She is the one who commented on the mac and cheese. Anyway, he is bigger than ever and has really high blood pressure. The medicine they gave him for high blood pressure raised his blood sugar levels to the point of diabetes. So now he is a mess. They put him on insulin and he found out from the internet that the high blood pressure med was what was causing his high blood sugar, so he quit everything. Speaking for myself, age is a big factor in my trying to get as healthy as I can.

See K10 that is what I am trying to say.....you are breaking free of the diet mentality. The diet mentality says that if you don't do it 100% then throw in the towel and start over after your binge. You went camping and you did well.....you didn't care about the cake and cookies. You didn't eat a piece of cheesecake and say....okay that's it game over I am just going to eat whatever and binge. You ate and enjoyed your food and are right back on track. I don't even mean you specifically K10.....I just think your experience was an example of the emotional health you can have doing this program. Your weight is an indicator that you had a successful 4 day week-end.

Debbie M.....I guess where I am going with this is sort of the Fly Lady baby-steps......where the overwhelming desire for perfection can undo your efforts every time you fall short of perfection. This is just some thought processes I am going through lately.....where I see a diet mentality has made me a little crazy. It is such an on and off mentality.....

Anyone out there know what I mean...........????

Bronwyn: I totally know what you mean.

Connie: I understand what you are saying too.

Mentally I am in a good place. Sooooooo many times I would just pig out after going off plan and I am really happy this is working out differently. Wait until Monday sort of thing. Monday's were my favorite starting point.

I also know that if I wouldn't have eaten the stuff that wasn't NFNS I would have possibly lost weight. I am just so happy that with all that is going on in my life right now that I am losing weight at all and that I haven't gone back to old habits. This board has been such a good thing for me. I love the encouragement, the honesty, the straight forwardness that is needed. Thanks for that Connie. I don't want to lie if I have strayed away, I want to own up to it and not make that choice again.

The only plans we have in the next couple of months are a couple of more grad parties (not even tempted by the cake fortunately), packing and moving, kids going to church camp at different times, and unpacking in my new house. Things are good. I figure I may be eating lots of El Pollo Loco when I don't feel like cooking, but that is ok. I won't be getting burgers or pizza like I would have last year. Well maybe a burger, but no bun. :)

Thanks for the support and wisdom I really appreciate it. We are going to do it. I know it.

Hey everyone. I had a lazy weekend. We did go walk down the beach yesterday. An hour one way and an hour back. When I got home it was like someone gave me a sleeping pill and I did go back to bed this morning and slept an extra hour. I do feel better. I made up for any vitamin D I may have been short on. Plenty of sun but I don't hurt. Well, hubby just came home so I will make it short. I cooked a tuna casserole and I made tacos this weekend. I put refried beans in the tacos and they were great but in the tuna casserole I put a can of cream of mushroom soup and whole wheat noodles and cheese. It was not NFNS and I have felt bloated and actually put on a pound. The secret is to get back on the NFNS wagon when you fall off. There is no way we are going to be 100% NFNS all the time. Don't beat yourself up.

Today is my daughter's 23 birthday. Her friends are taking her out to an 80's party. She bought a lime green tie dyed shirt and platform shoes. I almost wish I could go. I love a lot of the 80's music. Of course 70's was the best. Take care everyone and It's Monday...GET ON THE WAGON!

Connie I think we posted at the same time. I am not disagreeing with your 100%......I am just saying if we have a blip let it be just that and not a failure.

Anyways I keep coming back here when I need to be doing other things....Yikes!!!!!

I am completely 100% behind staying NFNS all of the time AND cheating just a bit and coming on board when you are ready. I'm totally happy being the cheerleader! My main point is the fastest weight loss comes from NFNS all the time over an extended period of time. But every step in the right direction is great, the health benefits are awesome.

Shrimp Scampi with rice pasta for dinner tonight. Son wanted some. I cut up my honey dew melon...so sweet! Were they always that sweet? The fuji apples are still good. Tomorrow I am going to try some no flour muffins I found on line. I've got "creative" going on right now, which means I'm willing to try something new.

I think summer is finally here. It got pretty warm today. Pants for me still. I'm woefully short of light weight pants so I guess I need to look into that. You know, I'm really getting tired of shopping for clothes that fit. I shop overstocks so the selection is already reduced and for some reason I can't find tops to go with my bottoms. I'm not a shopper to begin with. I need to give this job to a few of my nieces...they are so good they could hire out.

I have been so snacky today. And a bit snarkey. I'm getting a anxious about out trip to Mo. and Arkansas. Steve's family is nice but they are still In-Laws, need I say more. I always get this way when we visit. SO, a symptom of coping is over eating. I did stay NFNS accept for at my Mom's tonight. She got a new puppy, a multese, poodle mix. It's probably the cutest puppy I ever saw. She decided to name it Bailey. But she kept forgetting the name. It was all my fault, but I had this idea to go get a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream and take it to her house. My Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother-in-law, Brother and husband were there. We all did shots of the Baileys until the bottle was empty. Then she could keep the bottle to remember the name. English is my mom's second language and after all these years sometimes things just do not stick. So, yea, I had some sugar in that drink. I think I had three shots. We had a really good time. But all the food I ate today was without flour or sugar.

I had a ton of fruit. Fresh cherries, cantalope, more fresh cherries. I also bought some grapes, strawberries and blueberries. I'm still stuffed.
The next week will be a real challenge for me. BUT I remember that artical above that talks about not being bribed with food for your emotions. I think this is a perfect opportunity to practice some new coping skills. I WILL stay in control. If I get stressed I will go for a walk or talk it out with Steve. He is so understanding of my crazy ways of thinking and very supportive. He told me today that I look so much healthier than I did. He said my arms were thinner as well as my torso. That is a good thing to concentrate on.
We will be leaving on Wed. A. M. and return on Sunday night. So if you don't hear from me you will know why. When we come back we will have the kids with us. This has been such a nice vacation from the kids. Tomorrow will be our last day. Boohoo :o(

I hope everyone sleeps well tonight. I'll check in tomorrow.
