I also read tonight that you should shake up your routine more. Do something new. Listen to a different radio station. I recommend www.khisradio.com It is a small Christian station that a couple runs out of their basement here in Missouri. Read a different magazine. I like researching recipes and trying new foods that fit the plan.

Connie that is so funny about your husband being concerned about your meeting someone on line.....hey but near Banff was a plus, eh!!! This summer my kids saw this page for NFNS up on the computer a lot....they thought I was getting weird or something....like I needed to get out more if I was going to start blogging to strangers. They had never seen me blogging before. It is okay for them to facebook and stuff but they are not sure about their Mum doing on-line stuff or something smile

Greg we really do need you to explain more....I don't get it either.

Wishing you relief.

Welcome back Greg.....I switch my radio station between light sounds, jazz (which I love) and R & B Soul Mix while I'm at work....on the way home I just turn off my radio and listen to my thoughts, talk to God and refresh before I get home to start dinner, spend time outside with my four legged kids (I have two boxers) and my husband. I have a list of chores that I do every night (in regards to cleaning the house) that way I don't spend all weekend cleaning. I have my step daughter on the weekends so I spend time with her doing homework and then going to the movies and lunch. Lastnight was mopping and cleaning the baseboards.....that was an exercise...squats and side exercises (with the mop).....I did lose a lb from lastnight so it must have worked (but I am no way mopping and cleaning the baseboards every night! LOL).

I have had one root canal and my dentist didn't even ask me if I wanted antibotics he automatically gave them to me three days before the root canal to make sure there was no infection prior to.

Thank you Connie....it was tough....during all of his sickness he lost his dad (who was living in Canada) and I lost my step dad and then he passed....tough year. But with God, family and friends I made it through. We did not have kids...he was older than me and I have never been able to conceive. Just was not in Gods plans, but I do have wonderful neices, nephews and a wonderful stepdaughter. We (my new husband) was going to adopt a baby out of the country but it was soooo expensive.....we are happy with what we have so we just left it alone.....ok now that I have babbled on....LOL

I check this site throughout the day while at work....I look forward to reading each and every one of your post. I hope everyone has an awesome day.

It is a new day!!!!!
I woke up this morning with no tooth pain! Just some sensitivity. Went to the dentist (with McDonald's for everyone but me!) and tried to talk them out of seeing me. It has been so long since my tooth wasn't throbbing, I didn't want to mess with it. Of course they smiled and giggled and soothed and had me back in the chair within minutes! I did have a high spot, so he drilled and buffed and out the door I went. Now I have the whole day ahead of me, beautiful weather, no longer mopey and dopey (literally!) and with a good nights sleep behind me I am going to spend as much time outside as possible. I feel great!

bronwyn, I got the same kind of response from my kids! Their eyebrows shot up and they looked like I was about to do something terribly stupid and they didn't know how to tell their mom about the dark side of the internet and all the evils there within. Really funny and endearing at the same time! Now that they know exactly the circumstances involved, they have relaxed a bit. But bronwyn, don't turn out to be a pshyco crazed lunatic or I will never live it down!

Well, I did lose 2 lbs. But I plan on eating really good tasty stuff today and when I gain it back I will not mind.

Great day to all.

So quite tasty....1/4 cup of Bob's Red Mill museli, 100 gms. sugar free peach yoghurt (sweetened with fruit juice), 1/2 banana and 1/2 glass milk...yummy!

I don't live in Calgary but close and oh my gosh that is way too close to have actually put my weight in black and white on line......this blog isn't quite as anonymous as you think, eh!!!! smile

Hi again,

Sorry to hear about the tooth troubles, Connie. I have horrible teeth problems -- a legacy of poor childhood dental care. I also have dentist anxiety, but now I have my handy dandy Ativan to take before I go. Tres, I'm sorry about your late husband. I can't imagine how hard that must have been.

I'm still doing NFNS but I am not weighing myself. This works best for me. I'm exercising every day and feel myself getting stronger, and I know my body is changing, but I don't want to get discouraged if the scale hasn't actually gone down yet.

My husband is not on board at all with this, so I'm unable to get rid of the junk food in the house, but I'm doing well at not craving it. My downfall is not sugar -- I tend towards potato chips/salty stuff. We actually have 3 or 4 bags in the pantry and I'm NOT eating them! Yay Me.

Have a great day.

Thank you everyone for for the kind words over my dentistry!

I think a lot of adults have dental problems today because of childhood. I know in my family there were seven kids, no insurance and a self employed father. And of course, although we never were allowed soda, all we ate was white everything and plenty of sugar from other sources. Combine that with bad brushing habits and ...voila! I remember going to the dentist in middle school. I had 4 cavities but my older sister had 32! She is currently having tons of problems herself. When I think about it, growing up very few children had braces, but today most of them do. Progress I am sure.

bronwyn, I love hearing what you eat. So much of it I have never even tasted! And wouldn't know what to do with it.

Mary, I don't know how you resist the temptation! I can do it during the day, but at night (as in the middle of the night waking up and chowing down without remembering it) I go straight for the carbs. I can do that three times a night. Having rid the kitchen of such things, I only snack on NF chips occasionally. That is probably why I put on so much weight and why I've lost rapidly. My high school neighbor is selling tubs of frozen cookie dough as a fund raiser. Yikes! I am buying 3, one for the girls family, one for another neighbor with 5 kids and one for my son. I told him I better not see cookies around the house! Everyone here has been supportive. Unless they feel like cooking, they have no choice.

Lunch time! This is going to be good.

Here's a good (I think) low cal lunch.
I had 3 plain rice cakes. One with nothing on it, the other two with refried beans (watered down and heated on the stove) on top with a sprinkle of mexi cheese. I followed that with 2 glasses of water and I am stuffed! If I get hungry before dinner, doubtful if I drink a couple more glasses of water, I will munch some veggies.

And Mary, if you are exercising you probably should stay off the scales for now. Muscle weighs more than fat so it may be some time before the scales drop. Since I have zero muscle, I should be light as a feather! One of these days I am going to exercise. You would not believe how many videos I own. Shame on me.

I am soo thankful I do not have bad teeth. I am 40 something and I have only had 2 cavities, no braces and my teeth are white and straight. I drank soda as a kid and ate sugar sandwiches at my grandmas (she was obviously not looking).

I have always been active in school - cheerleading, basketball, track but now I can't seem to get motivated to start exercising again. I was going to the gym but stopped my membership......I will get there. I have 27lbs that I want to lose. Slowly but surely it will come off and I will strong with my new way of life. ; ~ )

Yep...you can have rice cakes. The plain ones. Ingredients- Whole grain brown rice, salt. I found the rice cake section at the grocery store and read the ingredients on all of them. The plain ones are the only ones we can eat. But they are a nice alternative since they are so low cal. I use them to dip into stuff and as the basis for my mini discs of mexican heaven! Love refried beans!
By the way, I also love onion dip and found a homemade recipe that tastes great. Just like the stuff we can't eat from the store, only fresher. If anyone is interested I can post it. It is good for dipping all kinds of things into. Tomorrow I am making crustless pizza for dinner and chips and dip would be a nice side dish. Just like I used to eat, only allowed.

I am feeling much better today but I am not thinking to start nfns for coming week but from next week I may.

And guys about exercise I got new information (new for me)
1.Subtract your age from 220.(220-30=190 here 30 is age)
2.Multiply ans by .5(190*.5=95)
3.Multiply the same ans by .75(190*.75=142.5)

To loose wt exercise must be done for min 30 minutes for heart rate 95 to 142.5
+
6-8 minutes total to cool down and warm up, for 5 to 6 times a week.

Ok, drum roll please. I have lost 2.5 pounds in exactly two weeks! Last week the scale said I lost 5 but I am really happy with the 2.5. That is a little more than 1 pound a week which is what is recommended for permanent weight loss.
Connie

Morning all! Congrats Debbie! You go girl!!!!!! Are you going to stay off the scales for another 2 weeks?

I weighed in at 161 this morning. I am sure to gain a lb or two since I am eating again, but it was fun to see. It gives me hope that I may see the 150's this year. Yesterday at the dentist, the assistant complimented me on my loss. She asked me how much I wanted to lose and I couldn't come up with a seriously considered number. I said 20 more lbs. She said "no, that would be too much. you don't want to get too thin." I told her I really just wanted to get out of my size 14''s. She understood that. Maybe when I start to exercise (don't laugh) I can make to a size 10.

I know they say you can't, as an older person, weigh what you did when you were younger. It doesn't look good. I wonder why that is? It does take the pressure off though. So, I've decided I will be the most happy at 150, or size 10. But I will settle for loose 12's. Of course, I'm in this forever so time will tell. My old weight was hell and I'm not going back!

bronwyn, I have been thinking about what you had for breakfast. I'm thinking the fruit sweetener is too much for you. I bought two jars of fruit sweet on line. It tastes heavenly, like pear honey. But it is so concentrated. My sister (here I go again) told me to stay away from it in the beginning because it would slow my weight loss results down. She recommended Stevia Balance. A natural herb sweetener. She is anti everything that isn't natural. She begged me not to use Splenda. She also wants me to stay away from canned food as much as possible. Could the fruit sweetener be undermining your plan causing cravings, adding unnecessary calories etc? The Stevie Balance comes in individual packets and is going to last me forever. Just a thought. If you really have been able to stick with the plan, and you don't feel you are losing, maybe you could shave off some calories here and there. That would add up.

You all have a great day, I'll check in later.

Connie, Thats funny you asked. Because I just got off the scale again. It said I lost 5.5 pounds this time. Go figure. Bronwyn, It just said 199.5!!!!!! Obviously my scale cannot be trusted but I'm going with it and I am not going to weigh for 2 more weeks. I wonder if I can really keep off the scale that long. hehe
I have a feeling this weekend is going to be difficult for me food wise. I've been hankering for good old fashioned flour and sugar foods. I'll try to get in some good exercise maybe that will help. The kitchen keeps calling me. I just have to remember what I read in the book. THis diet is a lifestyle change. Gotta go.

All right Debbie, forwarned is forarmed! Make sure you have some allowable treats on hand. I don't know what you feel like your missing, mac and cheese, floury desserts? With a little bit of imagination you can come up with a smart alternative. And please...drink water...in bulk! I stay out of the kitchen as much as possible. bronwyn and I both made to weddings and passed on the cake. But we thought about it long and hard and we were prepared when we had to face it. And you have no idea how much I love cake. I would always insist on a corner piece. Double the frosting! Sneaky ways we get our fixes.

Connie you are amazing...that scale just keeps on going down. It has been a long time since I weighed that and at the time I thought I was enormous now I would feel like I could wear a bikini all day long (ha, ha)....gee what a waste of time and emotional energy that was when I stressed about my weight all the time when I was thin.....like I mentioned before I felt heavy when I graduated from High School at 115 lbs., full term pregnancy with first 2 babies @ 148 lbs. It all seems like a dream now. There are pics to prove it but still it seems unbelievable because I have been heavy a long time now. I have also been unsuccessfully on a zillion diets......and miserable about my weight thin or heavy all of my life....dumb, dumb, dumb!!!!

Connie you could be totally right about the fruit sweetner and the fruit and all those good but sweet things. I have been a serious carb eater all of my life....."healthy carbs"......grind my own wheat and make fresh waffles, muffins, pancakes, topped with lowfat yoghurs and fruits and so forth. My blood work has always been good even this heavy. I really am starting to see more sense in low carb but not low carb junk.....which the store is full of. Low carb fruits, veggies and so forth. For breakfast today I had a corn tortilla with scrambled Omega 3 eggs, and on top fresh avacoda, tomato and crumbled havarti. I like fresh and healthy things,,,,not processed or anything artificial (I think this is why my blood counts have been good even at this weight). Don't get me wrong I do eat bad things as well but I am more on the side of "clean eating". Again my nemisis has been chocolate.....I used to eat a large amount of calories every day in chocolate.....I also spent a lot of money on chocolate because I bought the good stuff (you know it was really good for me kind of chocolate smile.

Debbie good for you. I have decided to weigh once a month. If I am only losing a fraction of a lb. each week it is too hard to even see that. If I lose 2 lbs. a month than I can actually see that on a monthly weigh. I want to eat healthy and balanced. I don't want to starve or eat in a way that I can't live with it for the rest of my life. I have all of Dr. Schwazbeins books and she also advocates...no flour no sugar and no artificial stuff at all. She has her meals and snacks divided up into having the right balance of carbs and protein. She says if you are trying to lose a lot of weight to take your ideal weight and add it to your present weight and divide by two as your initial weight goal. My first weight loss goal therefore is to weight 171 lbs.....honestly that feels pretty good ( I can wear things then that I can't now....all positive). That is 34 lbs. to lose and more easy to think about than 68 lbs. If I were to lose 4 lbs. a month than I would be to my first goal in 8 or so months. In a way that is hard to think about and yet I would be so incredibly healthy and feeling good that it is worth it. I figure I have 30 to 40 more years to live why not take the next two of those years to ensure those years are not dreadful years with all sorts of health problems, eh!!!!

Okay....this is verbose me again babbling on......I think I should start a blog for myself so I don't bore you guys all to death. It helps me to write about my thoughts and feelings and that is how I started on this site was just basically writing to myself...there really wasn't much of any activity here.

Deb forget that flour and sugar temptations this weekend....remember how crummy they would make you feel. If I ever get on top of this problem I think I could have a square or two of dark chocolate a day as my treat....but not now.

Well, I still haven't weighed, but today I had to buy a few clothes for work and I'm still the same size :( Actually, I'm not surpised because it's not like my old clothes were getting big or anything.

And those mirrors in the dressing room are harsh! I dislike shopping, and specially disliked it today, but my clothing choices had become slim pickins.

I feel much healthier, though. My heartburn has diminished greatly and I feel more "regular" if you get my drift.

Congrats Debbie and Connie on the weight loss. And, Bronwyn, your breakfast sounds yummy although I don't know what Havarti tastes like. I'd like to be all about fresh ingredients, and I try, but I'm not much of a cook, so my repertoire is pretty boring.

Mary if you want to eat fresh, healthy and no flour or sugar,,,,,plus easy you may like Dr. Schwarzbein's book....the program. She lists appropriate snacks and meals and they are all really easy things...My corn tortilla's fit into my toaster so I just pop them in there to warm them. Mary I weighed today but I hope to stay off the scales now for a month....Maybe the end of October or something. I know it will be hard for me to do but probably overall more helpful as I am so affected by the scales.

Hello Ladies, down to 196 lbs. this is working fabulous. And to explain, I only eat 7 servings of bread per day (as was recommended by the old weight watchers plan before points). Ladies get 5 servings of bread per day.

A serving of bread is 1/2 cup of pasta, rice, oatmeal, bulgar, grits or any other cooked grain, or a 1/2 cup of starchy vegetable like corn, peas or potatoes or a slice of bread or 2 slices of light bread. I am only counting bread servings and its working. If you are a label reader 1 serving bread is about 15 grams of carbohydrates. You can still be NSNF.

Bronwyn, I must warn you chocolate and cashews are limited!!!!!

Good Lord woman...you grind your own wheat!!!!! I don't even know what to say to that. This is much more than a new eating plan for you, it's a new way of life! I consider myself a pretty good cook, at least I am ready to take on complicated recipes etc, but I would be stopped dead in my tracks without store bought basics. It's funny you mentioned complaining when you weighed less. Us girls (sister's) try to have a family photo every 5 years or so. We complain every time about them, and then when the next one is done we realize how good we had it! Time has marched on. And trust me, this body will never see a bikini again. I have, however, been able to wear something other than granny panties.

I'm glad your willing to look at how much fruit/sweetener your consuming. I think that is causing your cravings. Today I had my 4 oz juice and that is really shockingly sweet to me now. I don't know if I will ever be willing to get started on chocolate again. It doesn't bother me now, so I'll stay away.

Mary, I looked back through the posts and I think your first entry was 9-9. so, how long have you been on NFNS and how much have you lost? I was losing and not noticing a difference in clothes for quite awhile. Do not become discouraged. Burning fat takes time, but the results are worth it!

Greg you are too funny.....please find me a program where I can lose incredible amounts of weight and have unlimited amounts of chocolate and cashews....daily. Greg believe me if you can come up with such a program....you will be an extremely wealthy guy smile YOu can build your own school...."The Greg Educational Foundation".

Hey we are all making little changes to the NFNS program....why don't we collaborate our ideas, write out own program ("The Blog Blabbers weight loss program"),,,,,before and after pics.....and again we could all be extremely wealthy. What sells better than yet another way to lose weight........and Greg if you could incorporate the cashews and chocolate.....I am predicting a best seller.

Connie I know people can't believe I grind my own wheat,,,,,I have quinoa, brown rice, whole barley, dried beans in all shapes, sizes and colours.....MY BODY SIZE DOES NOT FIT MY WHOLE FOODS MENTALITY. It wasn't these foods that I gained weight on.....I don't deal with stresses well....instead I eat chocolate (oh yeah and sometimes cashews). The weight has been there a long time and it has become really attached to me and likes its home.....I need to convince it to move out and find a new place to live....or actually just let those fat cells die!!!!

Yeah ...... I am not really doing the things I should be doing today......too much time on the computer.....I promise to get off of here.

And I am sure to a point it is all true, but, I have changed what I eat, when I eat and how I eat and I have lost 23 lbs. I am never hungry or caving into cravings. Lady Di....I was curious so I did a search....these would not be low calorie but with splenda they would be NFNS......note I have not made these just did a google search!!!
No Flour Brownies

INGREDIENTS
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 stick sweet butter
1 cup sugar (or Splenda, or 1/2 of each)
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 chopped walnuts (I added 1 cup for bulk)

DIRECTIONS
Melt two squares of unsweet. chocolate and 1 stick of butter in a saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of sugar. Add 2 eggs along with vanilla; beat like mad. Stir in 1/2 cup walnuts chopped in fairly good size pieces. Now mix all that up. Butter a square pan and dump the whole thing quickly into the pan. Stuff this pan into a preheated 325 degree oven for 40 minutes. Let it cool for awhile. Cut into 1 1/2 inch squares and dive right in.

Here's a brownie recipe without flour and eggs!
Happy baking! :)

I agree with you bronwyn, that is really loaded with butter and calories. The small amount you could eat just wouldn't be worth it. How does that saying go...a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips. Well, that's my opinion.

Let me tell you how life is supposed to be...

I got a call last night reminding me I have a wedding to go to today. What to wear. The dress I bought for MI wedding is too much for this casual affair. No time to shop. Dug around in the closet and found 2 darling pantsuits I bought 6 years ago, but haven't been able to wear. Not only did they fit, they are lose. That is they way it used to be. We had a function, we went to our closet's and chose, and never gave it another thought. Being able to do that is soooooo worth not eating brownies etc.

This morning I weighed 162. Thanks to a toothache, I couldn't eat much for several days. I'm making up for it, but trying to be as smart as I can about it.

Gotta go polish toes!

When I had lost some significant weight (not all I needed to lose but still great) on Dr. Bernstein I had bought a great pantsuit that I felt so good in. That pant suit is a long ways from fitting at this point but you reminded me of it and I would truly like to be able to wear that again. It will fit me really well on my first weight loss goal I have....there is some motivation.

bronwyn, your pant suit is like my favorite jeans. I am a long way from wearing them, and, when I last tried them on, I noticed the were shorter than I prefer. But, motivation for sure!
How are your food choices going? Have you eliminated some of the fruit/fruit sweetener from your diet? I think you are really going to see some difference without them. I spent some time thinking about the stuff I couldn't eat last week. Like cashews and chips and crackers. And without the chips and crackers I didn't eat much cheese at all. I'm thinking I will continue to lighten up on those in the future. I'm also planning on making some homemade soup. The soup I ate last week was very good with the dollop of cottage cheese and light on calories. Sounds smart and tasty!
Finished painting my toenails. What a joke...I can barely see them anymore, even with glasses! The reception is outside, it's about 100% humidity and my hair is going to be a frizzy mop. But, I have something to wear and that makes up for the rest.

Oh Connie we are both tortured with curly hair,,,,,I say tortured because I have fought with my hair all my life to have those sleek smooth lines,,,,,that if I ever manage to get it sort of sleek than yeah it rains or snows or something that causes moisture and then all the hard work gets undone immediately with frizz and bumps and lumps in the previous smoothness of my hair.

Connie I am doing really well with my food choices. I have cut way back on the fruit or things sweetened with fruit. Dr. Schwarzbein thinks in the weight loss phase you should reduce your fruit intake to 1 serving a day and that even then it should be consumed with protein to slow down the absorption. Once you have lost your weight it is appropriate to have 3 servings a day.......I love fruit so I will miss that and if I am in a tough spot I will still choose fruit.

Have fun at your wedding..frizzy or not....yeah I can't see my toenails very well to paint them either.

I too have curly hair but mine gets better with humidity. Even though I hate my hair right now due to its length its better than when it was all shaved off in Late January. Then in March part of it fell out so I have two different legnths to deal with. I have had hair below my shoulders all my life so this hair is really getting to me. I feel so ugly. I haven't colored it since before the surgery and it is darker than ever and now I have grey in it too. I would like to get highlights but I'm afraid of the chemicals on my scare which is over the top of my head from ear to ear. I'll just wait and let it grow some more.

I have to ask...is your hair long or short? My mom gave up on taming mine when I was in grade school, and I spent the rest of my years in school with an afro. My senior picture is hysterical...afro girl. Needless to say, I have been trying to grow it out ever since! A 30 plus year mission. I usually get to a certain point and give up on it myself. Back to the chopping block. But this time, I am going to let it grow no matter what. I feel like if I don't do it now I never will. What a mess. Lot's of curl, and twice as much frizz. I hate it. All the women that say they wish they had curly hair do not know what they are talking about. I wish mine were straight. But I have come to a point in my life where I rarely wear make up, so funky hair should fit right in. I straighten it a lot, but usually it just looks weird.

Jeez Debbie, I feel bad complaining! It sounds like your hair is fine and without too much frizz. That is pretty hair. That is the kind of hair my daughter has. She can go straight or curly. Yours will grow and before you know it, you'll have it just the way you want it. Think of the money you can save right now on salon visits and buy yourself something wonderful. Really wonderful, you deserve it. I understand how you feel with it short. That was how I felt growing up...it's a wonder I ever had a date. I always felt so unfeminine. But this too shall pass. We tie up so much of our self esteem with our hair and weight. Women have it hard! My husbands belly droops over his waistband and all's fine with the world. My thighs have been rubbing together for several years and I don't want to go out in public. I guess we have to take one thing at a time, do the best we can, be thankful for our blessings and spill to each other when it helps. God bless.

I am doing some cleaning and in between rooms I come and check this site...you know Debbie 15 minutes at a time smile Debbie I forgot that you had been through all the health issues. I think I mentioned that my husband had double dose front line chemo together with a stem cell transplant. That was 5 years ago and he is doing really well. He has always had pretty thin straight hair. When his hair grew back in he was thrilled that he had curly hair. It didn't last long and apparently that is common for hair to come in curly after chemo. It sounds like you always had curly hair though. My husbands hair came in curly and gray so it sounds like chemo changes colour of hair as well. Would you like your hair better if you got a good cut and had it cut into the same length and then grew it from there......I certainly understand your not wanting to fool around with chemicals. I think some people are just long hair people and feel more comfortable with their hair long....it will grow back out.

Connie your hair is probably more like my sisters hair.....hers is a much tighter curl than mine. Sometimes humidity makes my curls nice and other times it makes my hair frumpy. I tend to be a long hair person. Not as long as when I was young but longer than most women my age. I have tried it short a time or two but I always end up growing it out. I like it longer better. Often my hair is one big snarl at the nape of my neck.

I have a terrible habit of grazing and I am really trying to break free of that. I am trying to wait longer periods of time between meals and no grazing. I read that if you are hungry all of the time than you are eating too many carbs....so I am trying to monitor that to some extent but I am not a fan of Dr. Atkins style of eating either.

I have read that thirst can disguise itself as hunger. Yep...that's another plug for drinking lot's of water! Seriously, grazing can mess everything up. There have been a few times when I have caught myself snacking, so I skip the next meal or eat super light.
Yipee, I get to face another wedding cake.

I have curly hair, too, but as I've gotten older it's calmed down and I can go straight or curly although I prefer straight. I live in an area without much humidity, so it's usually not a problem. I've been going gray since I was 21!

Debbie, I scrolled back through the posts and saw that you had a major health challenge. I hope you're feeling and doing much better now.

Connie, I've been posting here only a little while, but I've been for the most part NFNS since mid July. I didn't weigh myself then, though, so I'm not really sure where I started. And although I'd love to be suddenly skinny, I'm mostly all right with it taking awhile, especially since the last time I lost weight (2002) I lost 23 pounds in about 7 or 8 weeks and my hair got really thin. It eventually came back but I don't want to deal with that again.

I'm trying to get healthy so I'm exercising and choosing good foods, but I'd really love to be down 10 pounds by Thanksgiving!!

And to be brutally honest, I'd be losing weight faster if I could give up alcohol, but I'm just not there yet. Obviously, this is something better addressed elsewhere, but it's slowing down my weight loss, so I thought I'd put it out there.

Even though I had a brain tumor, I can not complain. Especially when I hear about people that go through Chemo. Thankfully I didn't as my tumor was not cancer. It has a chance of returning but it is a very slow growing kind and I am just fine now. (smile)I will have an MRI anually to keep an eye on it. Thanks for your kind words. Bronwyn, WOW, I wish your husband well. I just can't imagine you two going thru that.
Connie, Thats OK, you complain all you want. Our issues are real to us no matter how big or small they are in reality. They are what we have to deal with at that moment and its very big and real at that time. Notice I was complaining about hair. lol This board is good therapy. Its good to talk about what ever IT is.
I went to a mexican resturant tonight. I asked and was told the chips were made with corn, not corn flour. I had a bowl of bean and chicken chili BUT I did have two Mojitos. I know, I know bad bad bad. Oh well, water under the bridge. I'll do better tomorrow.
Mary, Dr. Gott's book says we can have alchohol in moderation. I think its because he realizes we live in the real world and we have to have some vises. But he did say Moderation. I chose Mojitos because I read it was a good choice for a lower calorie drink than most even though it does have pure sugar or sugar syrup in it. Still lower than most.
Good night all.

Had a great time at the reception. The food was odd, so I just had some cheese cubes and 3 black olives. And one glass of wine. I didn't even seek the cake out to look at it. Then some dancing. It is good to get out and move around. I saw many people I hadn't seen in years...and their children...and their children's children! It looked like teenagers with babies on their hips. Of course, the young mom's were fully grown, but it just struck me how the next generation is making it's claim and moving into our shoes. And everyone has a tattoo. And they dance outrageously! It was a blast.

OK, so I'm not the brightest of people and tomorrow I am going to read back through the posts and make sure I know which Debbie said what. It may take me a bit.

Wow, several articles on my home page about weight, dieting, and sugar/sugar substitutes.

One says Americans are giving up dieting. It is at it's lowest number in 20 years. This while 2 out of 3 people are overweight. Then the article goes on to speculate why dieters are throwing in the towel.

Then an article comparing high fructose corn syrup to table sugar. Very interesting. In that article there was a link to a site comparing artificial sweeteners. Again, very interesting.

I'm so sure we are all on the right path with NFNS.

Sorry Debbie I am totally confused about the Debbie's now. It still sounds like you have been through some scary stuff....until the results were back I am sure you were pretty concerned. So they likely had to shave parts of your head to do the surgery and I guess that is the problem with the uneven growth of your hair. Like Connie said we women do put our selves through a lot with being unhappy about so many things and by comparing ourselves to others who seem more perfect. Connie my husband's belly is hanging over his belt as well and he doesn't seem worried about it....for health reasons though I think he should be. I guess the healthiest way for all of us would be to be more focused on the health aspect of it than on the physical.

This whole topic makes me think about "Gratitude". I get so wrapped up in what I am not happy about that I don 't spend enough time thinking about how blessed I am and how many things I have to be grateful for. I tend towards being negative.....I call it logical but really it is negative.....my focus for this week is going to be on the positive. I want to think about those things I am grateful for and less on those things I am not happy with. I think you bring into your life those things you think about.....so if I lack gratitude and am always seeing things in a negative light than my life will be more negative than happy and positive. I take so many things for granted and lack the attitude of gratitude way too often. Canadian Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away so I am going to try to be more thankful and look for ways to show gratitude. I may be going to Montana for American Thanksgiving so maybe I will just keep on going until then and try to make it a habit in my life. Today I am so thankful for how good I feel when I treat my body with respect and love by only eating unrefined and whole foods with out adding processed flours and sugars.

I just wanted to thank all of you for your inspiration. I have been lurking on the board since the day we started. My husband and I have been on NFNS for 6 weeks now and I have lost 20lbs. I started at 227 and I am now 207lbs. I really would love to loose another 27 lbs before January to try for another baby and hopefully never break 200lbs again. I can now wear 2 pant sizes smaller (clothes that I havent worn in 3 years now). I love this diet and love the lifestyle. I now go to the gym 2-4 x/week. I have learned now such healthy ways of eating and it has turned into a lifestyle. If you would have told me that I wouldnt be any fast food 2 months ago and LIKE IT. I would have laughed at you. I recommend this diet to everyone but I never would have been able to do it without my hubby who has done just as well.

Wow....alot of post in just a few short days......

Connie - I would love your onion dip recipe. I am a dip person and I love my hummus with Corn Chips. I am going to try the rice cakes today with the beans.

Does anyone know about Yuca? My husband is Cuban and when his mom comes over for the weekend she makes all of this Cuban food (mostly fried so I stay away or just have a little so I don't offend her) and I love the Yuca but I don't really know if it is allowed. It is steamed and boiled in water with Olive Oil, Onion and I think butter.

I worked out in the yard all weekend long, mowing, pulling weeds, edging, hedging, etc...I have 2 acres that is all landscaped so I work hard in the yard and being in FL it is hot all the time......I lost 2 lbs this weekend just staying outside. I did have my 2 glasses of wine on Saturday night around the pool after a long hard day in the yard and still lost. It was probably water but hey....it is lbs off of the scale.

Everyone was talking about bikinis.....in my backyard with no one around I am a size two....Ha Ha I don't look good in a bikini but I like to have my stomach tan and no one sees me but my husband (good thing he is Cuban and likes a little meat on his women!)

I have straight hair and cant' do a thing with it....I have to pay to get a perm to have curly hair.......what a pain.

Everyone have a Wonderful Monday......

Morning girls, and Greg!

I weighed in at 161 this morning, so I feel like that weight is here to stay. I'm almost to the 150's!!!!
I'm down 24 lbs. 24 POUNDS! I can't believe this eating plan has brought me here. Happy, happy, joy, joy!

Hi Jen. I think my weight loss would be faster if I would exercise. It's like I have zero motivation to do it. My best bet is on my treadmill, if it ever gets repaired. I am so in charge on my eating, and so stupid about my exercise. If I ever do get on top the exercise...look out! I can become very fixated on something and run with it. I agree with you about the fast food. It really looks like crap now. I can't imagine eating it. I have been surrounded by junk food since I began NFNS and there has been zero temptation. I am so happy for your weight loss, and your husbands as well. Keep it up, in 6 months we will still be posting our great and amazing weight loss!

Tres, I am happy to share dip recipe. I have to tell you, last week with the toothache, I ate a whole can of refried beans, over the course of several days, and I pretty much was not fit to be around! All is better now. Just wanted to give you a heads up. bronwyn will be the one to tell you about Yuca. She is the food guru of the bunch.

Caramelized Onion Dip

2 Tblsp butter
2 med size yellow onions, chopped
1 tsp salt, divided
1/4 tsp pepper
1 16 oz sour cream (I used Daisy light)
2 Tblsp chopped fresh chives

Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over med high heat. Add onions and cook stirring occasionally 20 min or until browned and tender. Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp salt and pepper. Remove from heat and let stand 30 minutes.
Stir together onions, sour cream, and chives in a medium bowl. Stir in remaining salt. Cover and chill 30 min. Serve.

For some reason, the recipe says to eat within 2 days. I think I finished mine off in 4 and didn't get sick or anything. Also, when using a nonstick pan, if it's teflon/silverstone and has any chips or scratches, it will release carcinogens. Even undamaged pans are risky at the high temp required for this recipe. Dupont paid a huge fine to the government over this, but for some reason it stayed quiet. Visit www.wisegeek.com and check out their page on the differences of nonstick cookware. I did purchase a teflon/silverstone pan, but I am very careful to keep the heat low.

I loved your comment about your hair! What I would give! I guess it's true no one is happy with what they have. We all just keep messing with what we have. It's a wonder it doesn't just fall out.

Later.

I know I said I wasn't going to weigh for a month.....but I did stay off for almost a week. I have lost 3 1/2 lbs.......WOOHOO!!!! I am trying to not be discouraged by the fact that I still have 6 1/2 lbs. to lose just to get back to where I was before my relapse!!!! The bottom line is though I am grateful for the minus 3 1/2 on the scales this a.m. I think I will try to not weigh for a while again as there are always those fluctuations that are discouraging. It is more fun to stand on the scales and see a bigger loss by waiting to weigh. I know I am on the right path and Connie I totally am going to match you on your 24 lb. loss (sometime but by then you will be running around in a bikini full timesmile

Connie your dip sounds divine. This week-end I roasted a large pan of veggies....sweet potato, regular potato (just a little) zucchini, red pepper, mushrooms, onions......hmmm, I don't remember what else. I warmed them and ate them as snacks and with meals. I also made a big lentil salad. Between the two i had really tasty and wholesome stuff to eat without any prep. Last night I did a roast chicken dinner and made a large fresh chopped salad. I find that I am less likely to turn to nacho's when I have convenient things to grab. I LOVE GOOD WHOLESOME FOOD....I HATE JUNK!!!

Sorry I have no idea about Yucca...it sounds like it is in the catcus family and remember I live on the prairies smile

Connie I am really worried about Teflon as well. I use cast iron pans....I have 3 good ones. I don't use Teflon at all. My friends got a really expensive Titanium frying pan, I think the one pan was something like $350. They loved it at first but hate it now.....it sticks and flakes as well.

bronwyn,I am so HAPPY! 3 1/2 lbs is a great start! And it is just the beginning. This is so awesome. I have done the roasted veggie pan and have snacked off it for days. I used sweet potatoes and they tasted like candy. That is so great. You are well on your way. I understand your concern about frequent weighing. I usually "dance" around a lower number for several days before it sticks. No matter what, do not ever be discouraged. Time is on our side. Time and really, really good food.

I know I need to invest in another nonstick pan. I rarely use mine. Mostly just for eggs. Most people here have cast iron. But I was never around one growing up, so they are a mystery to me. There's the whole "seasoning the pan" factor that I know nothing about. Maybe you could share some info with me.

I wore myself out today working in the yard. I kind of went overboard on cleaning up messy areas left over from Ike. I thought I was being very helpful to my husband who usually handles "bushy" areas. Then my neighbor came over and said she thought I was working in poison ivy...and probably chiggers as well! Good heavens! I'm just waiting for the itching to began. Or, maybe I'm the luckiest yard worker ever and I wont be suffering. We'll see.

We are victors...all of us.

Connie glad you are on top of your dental work now....I am booked for a cleaning on the 23th.....so I will see where we are starting after that.

Speaking of dips...I love "baba ganoush'.....a spicy eggplant pate that would be lovely on any of the flour less crackers that we can have. It is actually very good on pita's and I haven't tried it on rice crackers or so forth but it is so good that I think it would work. There are several recipes on line. Of course there is always the yummy roasted red pepper hummous we have already discussed. Blue cheese dips (mix 3 1/2 oz. danish blue or any strong creamy blue cheese, mix with 7 oz. light cream cheese, 1/4 milk. 1/3 cup chopped chives plus extra for topping, fold in 1/2 cup roasted chopped walnuts.........mix all together and put in a bowl and top with chives and walnuts for effect.......yummy with roasted vegetables. A variation on the roasted red pepper hummous is "chili bean dip: 2 fire roasted red peppers, 3 Tablesppons olive oil, 2 garlic cloves, 1 small seeded and finely chopped hot pepper, 15 oz. can red kidney beans(drained and rinsed), 1/2 tsp. paprika, few drops of tabasco. salt and pepper to taste and top with chives.........process in a food processor adding the oil at the end with the motor running. This is good with vegetables or in a corn tortilla with some grated cheese. Peach and ginger salsa is really nice on fish. There are so many and they all make the food you are eating so much more interesting. There are many healthy NfNS choices in home made salsa's and dips. YUMMY!!!!

No the one I make does not have sugar in it. Here is what it says on line:
Here is a summary of the nutrition facts for Hidden Valley Ranch Dip before it is prepared:

Serving size ½ tsp (1.8g)
Servings about 16
Prepared 2tbsp (30g)
Calories 5 (from mix) 70 (prepared)
Calories from fat 0 (mix) 60 (prepared)

Total fat 0g
Saturated fat 0g
Trans fat 0g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 240mg
Carbohydrate 1g
Fibre 0g
Sugars 0g
Protein 0g

From the nutrition facts, we can see that on its own, this mix contains nothing more than a sprinkling of salt and some carbohydrate. The final nutritional value will depend a lot on the type of sour cream you add to it. But once you add the sour cream, the fat and salt content will increase, so it is worth bearing this in mind when trying to calculate just how "healthy" this product will be when you serve it to friends and family members.

I hope this helps.

I thought maltodextrin was sugar. But I guess not. Back when I was doing the South Beach Diet, I used a sprinkling of the ranch mix powder on my salad along with a splash of olive oil for my salad dressing. I have come to really like the combination. It was a way for me to get some healthy olive oil in my diet and skip all the added fat and calories in milk, may etc. I'm glad to know I can do it again.

Personally, I drink 1% milk. I can't do skim...and believe me, I've tried! I limit my cereal intake, so my milk intake is low.

Thank you everyone for all the info you have given to me today. I would like to start a dialog, since we are so good at it, about vitamin supplements, omega fish tabs, calcium etc. Let's put our heads together and see if we are all getting enough.

But now I am back on my food plan which is no sugar flour or wheat & I am starting to see the results again. I found that the website www.kaysheppard.com told me everything I needed to know perhaps you would like to take a look, it contains food lists for those of you who require one. Hi Sharon. I can't figure out what you lost, "2 stone" after being on this plan for a year. I have always set one year as a goal for me. Did you gain all of the weight loss back? Glad your back on track.

I too take a multi-vitamin nightly. For awhile I was taking Omega 3. I took 3 of them a day. I don't know why I stopped. I will start again. I think I probably need a calcium supplement more now than ever. Somewhere I read it should have magnesium in it for better absorbtion. I really need to look into that.

Remember my wedding trip to MI? Well, the bride and groom have relocated to NC for jobs. She's a teacher and can't find a job in MI. He is a EMT. She is in NC and he can't move until the 2nd or 3rd of Oct. She is one of my family members suffering form anxiety disorder. Her mom, my sister, has been with her and must leave tomorrow. So, tomorrow I am flying to NC to stay with her until Tues. I am really happy to help, but it is such a rush and I have to change planes in Atlanta and I'm hoping that will not be to scary! On a positive note, I ordered some new clothes and they came yesterday so I'll at least have something to wear. It is so sad...my closet. My weight had just been going up, up, up for years. And I would just end up buying one item here and there and very rarely. The end result was nothing matched and most everything was purchased for function, (tent things) rather than style or attractiveness.

Glucosamine Chondroitin and MSM 3X's a day (for my knee)
One a Day multi-vitamin
Calcium Magnesium with Vit. D.....4 x's a day (I am aiming for 1500 mg. of calcium a day so together with my Vit. this will accomplish that ...... but i seldom take it 4 times a day........my study on the matter has shown it needs to be taken periodically through the day and not in one big lump sum as your body can't assimilate any more than 250 -300 mg. at a time so anything in excess of that is of no value)
Omega 3 10000 mg.........1 tablet per day

(which I mentioned that I am presently trying to lose again) I certainly felt different and looked different but for that much weight loss I didn't move down in size as much as I think would be expected. Just wondering if exercise may make the difference in such a big clothing size change.

It is 4:55 a.m. and I haven't been asleep yet......insomnia. I struggle with my sleep so much. The next day I feel so lousy....and usually end up having to have a sleep. It isn't good for the food intake either. I try not to eat when I can't sleep but I will think maybe if I just have a little bit then I can sleep. It means having one extra serving of calories a day....not a good thing.

I think you are on the right track with the exercise. More importantly it will even help you sleep at night.

Scale said 199.5 today!! Thats 5.5 pounds for me. Its amazing how the weight comes off slow but sure.

I went to my cardiologist and his scale was 10 pounds heavier than mine. I know because I came home and weighed myself with what I was wearing when I got home. That was really disheartening. But since I only go to him once a year I'm going to stick with my scale. It will continue to go down weather its right or wrong. My cardiologist said I have a mild case of metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance. Has anyone else thought about this possibility? Or even heard of it? It has to do with the way some people gain weight in their central or mid section like i do. The way these people digest their food is a little different then the pear shaped people. We secrete too much insulin when we eat carbs, ultimately causing low blood sugar and then ravenous hunger again. The cycle continues. The only way to stop it is to eat the good carbs or what they call low glycemic foods. We tend to store the fat instead of burning it off from our blood stream my converting it to usable energy. So he told me the South Beach diet was the one for me. Its really very close to NF/NS. Its written my a cardiologist. My doc said anything like Sugar Busters is good. So I'm sure what I/we have been doing is good. I feel like I have a great start. We talked about an ideal weight for me. He said that if I went below 150 I would have to eat so little that I would be malnourished. He said 160 would be a reasonable weight for me.
What are your thoughts on this?

It is all in your body shape. I weigh 159 and I wear a size 10 in my casual/capri pants and dresses and my jeans. I wear a 12 in dress pants because I can't stand tight clothes in the professional world. I am 5'5" but I hold my weight in my butt, thighs and hips. I have a small waist. I am curvy...LOL Look at Marilyn Monroe...she was a size 12 but very curvy and I think she was very sexy as a women. I think women with curves are sexier than stick women (my sisters are sticks - no hips, butt..no curves).....we are real women and we are all beautiful in our own way.

Debbie M - I have heard of that but don't know anything about it.

How are you doing Bronwyn? I wonder how Greg is doing with his new plan....let us know Greg.

Everyone have an awesome day.......have fun Connie

I found the kay sheppard plan good because it eliminates all sugars, wheat & flour, the reason I do this is because if I allow myself just some the body knows & it sets me up for a craving. So for me to eliminate it from my diet is the only way for me. That way I am not on a diet then off again, I can eat like this for the rest of my life. Rice cakes were permitted on her original plan, you just need to be aware that they are slightly more processed & so for some people could prove to be a problem , but i can eat them in a healthy balanced way. I also make my own sugar free mayonnaise. I lost over two stone in the year that I was on it. After I had bereavements & illnesses in my family this year I went back to compulsive overeating & gained 1 stone back, but am now back on this food plan. Kay sheppard has two very good books out called "The body knows" which explains how the body works where sugar flour & wheat are concerned & "from the first bite" where it goes into how to follow this way of eating for life. It truly works, just by cutting out some sugar, wheat & flour is never going to work, (for Me )because I need to eliminate them to eliminate the cravings & the mental obsession associated with it that leads me back into the food.

I'll second that congratulations! Wonderful! Peter James will keep you young for many years to come. And busy. And crazy happy. I hope they live close by and you can see him all the time. New mom's need help. I remember that much.

I made to NC. A very busy screwed up travel day. But I am here at last and the wether is perfect. Overcast, rainy, cool. Glorious. My neice is so grateful. We stayed up late last night talking. She really is a sweetie. But today I am a slug! Just tired I guess.

She noticed my weight loss.

I'll check in later.
Love to all,

Thank you Tres. I havent been able to lose weight in years. Its all just clicking for me this time. I hope I am able to stay with this way of eating for the rest of my life. I would love to get down to a weight that is not only heathful, but to have a body I feel good in would be terrific. I will weigh again in a week.
How is your progress everyone?

Good for you Debbie! I knew when I started this plan, this was the one for me. I not only hadn't been able to lose in years, I was slowly gaining more and more. It is the best feeling...being on top of the situation and losing weight, no matter how slowly. Never being hungry or feeling deprived. Those feelings always did me in before. And even before I actually started losing, my stomach felt flatter, That really helped me get going.

There are no scales in this apartment. So, I will not be able to weigh again till Wed morn. I'm sticking to the plan, but basically so far it's been rice cakes, laughing cow (full fat!) and some soup (which actually is not on the plan). We are going shopping today. I'm hoping for the best when I weigh in at home.

I hope everyone is well. Especially new baby Peter James.

HI to everyone!!
I am new here and wanted to introduce myself! I too like many of you have tried every diet under the sun! I lost about 75 pounds on WW about 15 years ago,(was not at my goal weight) I have kept it off for the most part, I have never gained more than 15 pounds since then. I have vowed to myself to keep it off! Well I have put back on 15 pounds and it is time to get them off before it turns into 50! I am burned out with WW and after reading all your great posts and stories, I think this is a plan that I can follow and eat healthy for life. I am currently 5" 1 and weigh 139 pounds, I would like to get back down to 125. But more than that, I just want to feel better and eat healthy!

I was excited to come across this blog about NFNS and that it was an activity going on! I will try to post as often as I can, I travel alot, but will pop in!

Welcome Cammie,
You are really smart to jump back into this weight loss venture while you only have 15 to take off. congrats on the 75 loss! And keeping it off for the most part means you have adopted a new "way of life" eating pattern.
I think you will find as I have and many others that your food cravings will go away (if you have them) when you get the sugar and high gyycemic foods out of your diet. I was a complete yoyo when it came to my blood sugar. For the first time in my life I feel even and do not get those famished feelings where I just HAVE to have the worst stuff I could possibly get my hands on.
Welcome again and looking forward to hearing from you again.
Thanks Connie,
It sounds like you are doing a good job under the circumstances. Enjoy your trip.
I too am going on a small trip. We are ging camping tonight. Almost ready to leave. But I will be back tomorrow afternoon. Just a one nighter. Any other campers here?
Later, Deb PS How is little Peter James?

It is so amazing to hold this sweet little baby and then to realize that your son is a daddy. I loved watching my son hold his son. I am on the look out for a brand of clothes called "Peter Rabbit".....I had bought that brand when my kids were little and they were so cute and had "Peter Rabbit" written on the front of them.....cute, eh!!!! Babies are such a miracle.

Welcome Cammie.

You guys are all so inspiring. Keep the posts coming. Connie you are amazing away from home....no real groceries and still steadfast in your commitment.....WOOHOO!!!! Way to go girl.....your weigh in will be very favorable next week I am sure.

Greg are things still going well for you. It sounds like you have found a way to reduce the calories in your diet and lose weight......that is really what it is all about.

Grandchildren are so special. My granddaughter is 8 and she still lights up whenever she sees me and gives me a big hug. It makes my day.
