So busy yesterday. I finally got my hair cut and colored. I think I like the cut, I know I like the color. They can mix just the right shade for me. It is a richer shade of brown now. I need to wash it and style it my own way to see if the cut will work. I'll do that later.
We must have rain in the forecast. I woke up at 5:00 with a splitting headache. I took a 600 Ibuprofen, but my headache is coming back. So today I will probably be very lazy. So lazy, I'm not weighing today.
I eat Breakstones 2% cottage cheese. And my husband once got me a Starbucks gift card for 25 and it was declined. He didn't keep the receipt so I just threw it away. I missed the ND game yesterday. I meet my friend for lunch after my hair appt so I was gone for most of the day!

Here are a few simple steps you can take to maintain your weight over the holidays, and still have fun.
1. Don't Deprive. Maintaining your current weight over the holidays is a more realistic goal than trying to lose weight or diet. Enjoy the delicious holiday food, but remember to practice moderation.
2. Eat Before You Eat. Skipping meals to save room for your favorite holiday foods is a recipe for disaster. If your stomach is empty before the big meal, you will end up eating more food and consuming more calories. Before the meal, eat a small bowl of cereal, nuts, fruits or veggies, half of a sandwich, or a small salad.
4. Bigger Isn't Better. Often times, the plate size is larger than the stomach, which means the larger the plate, the more we pile on to eat. Look for or ask for smaller plates at a holiday party. If only large plates are available, be extra conscious of your portion sizes. Don't fill the entire plate.
5. Lighten Up. Nothing completes a holiday meal quite like dessert. However, most holiday desserts are full of calories, fat and sugar. Try changing the old recipes to include lower fat, lower calorie ingredients, like applesauce or fat-free evaporated milk.
6. Walk it Off. It is probably safe to say that most of us will enjoy too much food over the holidays. If that's the case, just remember to keep your physical activity levels up. Offer to help the host or hostess clear and clean the plates after the meal, or ask everyone to join you for a walk around the block.
Connie, How was your football food? WHat game did you watch? Did you see the Colts game? Pretty exciting! |

Morning. Ok, I knew my weight would be up today...all that great food yesterday. And it was so tasty, I ate way too much! This morning I weighed 150.6! Good grief!!!! I have got to get back on track. There are a couple of things working against me that I have to put a stop to. For one, my friend wants to eat out everyday for lunch. I eat out more than I want. So I have to start telling her no. She does not want to take no for an answer. It becomes a battle of wills between us. But I'm putting my foot down. Next, I haven't been eating well when it's just me. I need to do better there. Also, I have been sliding on buying treats for the family and then I nibble. So no more of that. If they want it, they can go get it. That's the plan. Wish me luck! I hope everyone is doing well. |

I did watch the Colts/Patriots game. I went to bed at half time. Wow, was I surprised to hear that the Colts won! I guess I missed a good game. But I was so tired. It's funny, whenever a game is about to start my family asks who I like. I say I like everyone. And really so far I do! It drives them crazy. They keep telling me I have to chose. Silly family. I cheer for both sides all the time.
My friend wanted to go to lunch. I said no. Go me. She is not overweight. She goes to the gym everyday. She is the one that had the tummy tuck. She wears a size 10/12. She hoped to drop a couple of sizes. She has a healthy appetite and she is fortunate in that she can eat and not gain. I don't think she has ever crash dieted so her metabolism is high. And going to the gym keeps it up. But if I ate like her I would be huge. She doesn't have an ounce of fat of flab on her tush or thighs. Just trim as can be. Her legs are to die for. But from the waist up she is a bit larger than I am. That's where she carries her weight. You would never look at her and think she has any weight problem. Just thicker in her waist and higher.
Debbie, sounds to me like you were craving big time. Starch mixed with more starch. Yep, sounds like craving.

I made beef rouladen, roasted potatoes, green beans and a cabbage salad. It isn't a difficult dinner but when you are making it for 16 people it is a lot of work.
K10 I think maintaining over the holidays is a great idea....then you don't go into the holiday feeling stressed. I tend to over eat when I put too big of expectations on myself....because I am never as perfect as I plan and then I throw the towel in and eat like a stupid person

I sat down this AM with a cup of coffee, after I dropped my daughter off at choir. I decided to look at the DVD's I checked out. One is Lisa Rinna' Dance Body Beautiful, wow, what a body. I think she is my age and I'm telling you she is HOT! I wish I looked like that.
Another is Bollyrobics dance workout, what ever that is.
And the last one is pilates with Kathy Smith's Peel of the Pounds. Wouldn't that be amazing if we could literally PEEL off the pounds? Lumps and bumps in places they shouldn't be freak me out. I would go the doc. Actually, I just got home from the doc myself. I'm like you Bronwyn, in pain. But I have had 2 shots and 3 prescriptions to ease mine. It started last night. I woke up at 3 soaking wet. My gown was wet...I mean wet! My sheets and mattress pad were wet. So I changed gowns and got on the couch. Our couch has recliners on each end. Those end positions are very firm. But the center position doesn't have the extra support, so I sits lower. My hips were sunk below a comfortable level for 4 hours. I couldn't get up when I woke up. I try so hard to take care of my back so I can avoid pain. I wear a lift in one shoe, I sleep on a firm mattress, I sit on a wedge. But sleeping like I did last night really did a number. This is the first time I have ever went to the doc for my back. I'm hoping for some relief. I called my husband and told him we need to get a new couch. I hope he will agree.
I watched my dvd but I haven't had time to do it. But I liked the looks of it. It actually recommends watching the video all the way through before trying it.
I'm going to go lay on my back. I can't do any housework or lift for a couple of days. Fine with me. |

You guys do not want the health program that Obama is trying to pass,,,,,,,really you don't. I had a friend who went in into emergency a couple of weeks ago and waited for 28 hours before she saw the Dr. Also our taxes are through the roof because of gov't run programs such as our health care.....you definitely pay for it and the service is not nearly as good. |

I was behind her and was able to grab her. "Give out" knees is not my problem. Thankfully!

Debbie M. I usually eat the same thing for brkfast and lunch. Oatmeal-doctored up to make it good-for breakfast. Some almonds and peanuts in the AM for snacks. Then 1 fried egg with cinnamon raisin toast for lunch.
Interesting comments re: health care. I wonder if it will continue that it depends on the area you live in (i.e. Memphis vs other areas) that determines the quality of health care. |

On Sunday I noticed a pimple in my ear near the top. When I went to the doctor today, after two different doctors felt my lumps (man did that hurt) they think it may be related to the pimple in my ear. Lymph nodes swollen because of it. I am now on antibiotics for 10 days. I hurt so badly after I got home from the poking and prodding, thankfully the ibuprofen seems to work.
Connie: I am glad your meds are working for you.
Bronwyn: I whole-heartidly agree with you. There are reasons why people from other countries, like Canada, come here for health care. I know it is difficult when you don't have insurance, but the government can't fix everything. Living in California, I see how bad it can be because of the abuse of the system by people that come here illegally. Our school system is also a joke.

Morning gang! My back feels very sore, but I have much more freedom of movement. I didn't fall. I have degenerative back problems and my hips are not level. I will forever have to wear a lift in my shoe, which pretty much means nothing strappy or open in the back. Sleeping on the couch did me in! Anything jarring or heavy lifting or soft seating will make it become inflamed. Oh well.
I read that eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch daily very helps with weight loss. Healthy things of course. Dr Oz advises it too.
K10, who would have thought a pimple could do so much damage! I hope it goes away soon. The other night I had 2 pimples pop up on my chin. I dabbed them with finger nail polish remover before I went to bed and they were gone in the morning. That's the third time I've done that and it always works!
I saw the proposal when I was in MI. I thought it was really cute. The other night I tried to watch Star Trek, but I ended up on the phone with my MIL so I gave up and left the room. I may get a chance to watch it this weekend. I think I will like it.
What to do today? I'm supposed to stay off my feet, but I will gently get a few things done. I have to run to the store and get some ezek bread. Then lazy bum all day I guess. I plan to clean up my emails. I need to delete about 1/3 of them! |

Over the River and Through the Woods
Over the river and thru the wood, To grandfather's house we go; The horse knows the way To carry the sleigh, Thru the white and drifted snow, oh! Over the river and thru the wood, Oh, how the wind does blow! It stings the toes, And bites the nose, As over the ground we go.
Over the river and thru the wood, To have a first-rate play; Oh, hear the bell ring, "Ting-a-ling-ling!" Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day-ay! Over the river and thru the wood, Trot fast my dapple gray! Spring over the ground, Like a hunting hound! For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Regarding head hunger:
If you're not hungry, FEAST instead! Focus: What is going on inside of you? Focus on your physical state, your thoughts, and your feelings. Identify any possible triggers for eating such as fatigue, boredom, overwhelm, or nostalgia.
Explore: Complete this statement: I feel _ because _. Peel away the layers by asking “why?” and “what else?” Sometimes “I want a cookie” means “I want comfort,” or “I want rest,” “I want to escape from this conversation,” or “I want to experience the joy I remember from my childhood.”
Accept: Criticizing yourself for your thoughts, feelings, and actions will keep you stuck in old patterns. Accept that your emotions, no matter how difficult or trivial they may seem, tell you something about your needs.
Strategize: What could you do to meet your underlying need? (If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!)
Take Action: The step you take will depend on your specific need; just make sure it small, realistic, and takes you in the general direction of meeting your true needs.

Morning. 148.6 this morning. I am done with one of my meds...it is too strong. I am going to take the muscle relaxer and ibuprofen only. The pain med is too much and I can't poo! I look pregnant! Enough of that! I think I may have overdid yesterday, so today taking it easy.
Luckily I have left overs for dinner. Sunny day here today. I need to get cracking on my Thanksgiving prep. Family coming to town. I just don't feel like doing anything. Wish you could come and whip up my holiday dinner Bronwyn! |

When should you take a frozen turkey out of the freezer to thaw? We will have additional people coming for dinner and now I am a little more stressed. I would hate for the turkey to be gross. What do you all make for Thanksgiving? |

If you have room in your fridge take it out of freezer and thoaw in refridgerator. The butcher told me it takes two days but putting it in fridge now will be fine. Maybe this weekend. I hate thawing them in the sink under water.
We are having Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, noodle, rolls, cranberries, pumpkin, pecan and apple pies with whipped cream. |

I am totally devistated and don't know what to do with him!! 2 D's, 2 F's and a C- What am I going to do? What am I going to do? My heart just sank. I'm suppose to drive him 30 minutes away this evening so he can go to his cousins birthday party and spend the night. THey will stay up all night gaming. THen tomorrow he will be sleepy. WHat am I to do? Taking away his computer and video games has made no difference in is grades. We have been warning him. He just walked in the door and I sent him up to his room because I don't even know what to say to him. I told him to wait there for me. Oh what do I do? Take EVERYTHING away? Ignore it? Go to school with him until he graduated from high school? Lets have a vote y'all!

Debbie I don't want to harp on about A.D.D. but, I think there is a strong possibility that you need to have an assessment done. It won't matter if you take everything he owns away and it won't matter if you ban him from every activity in life.....if he is unable to focus in the classroom then he will still be unable to focus in the classroom. If he is unable to organize his thoughts and put them on paper.....because his mind is like an out of tune radio station,,,,,it will stay that way no matter how much pressure you put on him to change. I don't believe that anyone wants to be unsuccessful. You may be upset but how do you think he feels. People compensate in all kinds of ways for these things......act like they don't care, get mad at you, start to rebel, act out,,,,,,maybe, just maybe this isn't his fault. He is most likely feeling like he is stupid and what the heck who cares and what can he do. Debbie if he is A.D.D. then he is going to need some help to be able to turn this around. You can scream until you are blue in the face and lambast him with every rule in the world and take everything he owns away and he will still not have success in school......if he has undiagnosed A.D.D. I don't believe he is doing this on purpose. The problem may not be A.D.D. but there is something amiss.... Talk to him as calmly and gently as possible. Find out how he feels....try to determine together what may be the problem. |

Listen Debbie whether you recognize this or not....because you are upset with his grades.....so is he. He may likely act like he just doesn't care but I don't buy that for a minute. He may have decided that he is stupid and that he just can't do the work. You know he isn't "stupid" (I hate that word)....but you also know that it is a horrible thing to feel like you are. Get beyond your feelings as a parent of being upset with his grades.....try to feel out the real person your son is. How does he feel? What does he think is the problem? What can you do to support him in turning this around. No threats.....love and concern and support. |

At a high level of sugar intake, there is a risk of damaging or even destroying the adrenal and thyroid gland. These delicate glands must work overtime to help the body deal with excess sugar . After awhile under the pressure of constant bombardment of refined sugar, these glands literally burn out. To be sure, the glands are capable of regenerating and their function can return if you make the appropriate dietary changes and get off the sugar. There is a risk for permanent damage if you continue your sugar consumption. The more sugar consumed over the years the more likely it is that you will have burned out a portion of your adrenal and thyroid glands.

Debbie-Your trials remind me of when my father said to me, 'Don't give up on him.'
I almost had some kind of educational counselor evaluate my son, but the office was too far away. So, I did what was close and convenient. I had him tutored in 2 subjects one semester. The head of the tutoring clinic did want to hear about his scores on any standardized tests from his school. Then she proceeded to find him some tutors. It showed him that I was concerned and this was going to take work. One of the subjects was algebra (which laughingly my other son teaches), and the other subject he was tutored in was World History - I think that's what it was called. I knew the person who ran the tutoring organization. She had very qualified people tutoring-like the head of the Math Department at a high school. And a history teacher at the local community college. Some of those tutoring outfits you have to watch out for-like Sylvan Learning Center-It's not very good. His tutoring sessions helped. His history tutor showed him how to study for tests!!! Very valuable. I was constantly on the computer looking up info. about kids who don't do well in high school, but that was just to deal with my anguish. Like Bronwyn said keep your relationship with him good (somehow-whatever it takes) .
Unfortunately the tutoring was expensive. But I was desparate.

Debbie, my heart goes out to you. And your son. For him it must be especially frustrating since his sisters did so well. Ok, I know I have asked before, but I am going to ask again...what do his teachers say? They can be real insightful. It can be very good to have contact with them before progress reports come out, sort of all the way along, then no big surprises. It is good for the child to see parental involvement. It really is all about caring, they will appreciate it eventually. In the meantime, like Bronwyn said, deep breaths. |

Debbie: I think your son, husband and you should have conferences with each of his teachers. Bronwyn may be onto something with the ADD, some of the things you have said about him makes me think it is possible. Most kids with ADD are extremely bright.
My friends four year old is on meds now, two different ones actually, I know this seems young but he has been the kid who you dread being around and she is a consistent parent. His reputation proceeded him and he isn't even in school. She said she had the best week with him. She read some of the symptoms from this book about ADD to her step-son and he finally feels like, now I know why I had issues. He got involved in drugs and is now in the Marines. Not that your son is, but it may be something to consider as well. They have drug tests at Walgreens and such. Did we talk about this before?
Has he always struggled? They probably have info online that will help to evaluate if your son has the symptoms of ADD.
I pray things go well for you this weekend, the library probably has books as well.
Take care

Symptoms # The symptoms of attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity in children are slightly different from those of the hyperactive form. Children with inattentive attention deficit disorder may actually seem lethargic and generally unengaged at times. Other symptoms include a dislike or avoidance of tasks that require sustained attention as with school work, appearing to not be listening even when being spoken to directly, difficulty organizing their tasks or play, being easily distracted and forgetful, and easily losing personal possessions.

Morning all. I don't know what to think about medication and ADD or ADHD. I know my sister is a teacher and she tells me about the struggles the kids with this diagnosis have when they are not medicated. Sometimes teachers get a bad rap. Parents think the teachers don't want to deal with the challenges their kids present. But my sister says unmedicated kids are not learning. And they are very angry about their situation and lash out. Then, the other kids can't learn. It is a very complicated problem. I remember reading that a side effect of medication was suicide in adult years. I don't know if that is because the child never was able to learn to function as an adult and the responsibilities of adult life became too overwhelming. I have known two families with this problem. Both tried to work on it without meds, both eventually used the meds at the high school level because the kids just could not learn. They were not going to graduate without the meds. Both expressed they wished they had started the meds sooner. Taking the meds is not easy. You have to keep an eye on food intake and still work on good habits. And work closely with a doctor. But both children graduated. One is in college and doing well. If I were the parent, I would use the meds. What is going to happen to an adult child that can't graduate? Nothing good. |

Thank you all for posting your opinions. I don't think any of you are off track at all. You thoughts have been my own. I think my husband and I have come to the conclusion that we HAVE to have an official evaluation for my son. He is a smart kid. He is expressing for the first time that he dosn't know why he can't do it. We had a good talk and I tried to stay calm. He dosn't want help, I think because of pride but he is open to medication. So isn't that a contradiction? Anyway we will move forward.
Does anyone know where in the world I start to look for help? Are there programs at school? Our family doctor? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
BTW, Did I tell you we have had to make the decision to give up our camper? We sold it and the man is coming for it on Monday morning. It's very upsetting but when you are tight on money it's the luxury items that have to go, right? BOOHOO :( We are looking at braces for my 9 year old and increased insurance for a 16 year old driver $$$$$$$ I guess we will camp in our tent. We still have all the equipment. |

Debbie: I wouldn't check at school first. Go to your family doctor to get the referrals you need. My friends son is so young, but she says he is acting like the child she knew he was. The medical group she goes to is being very pro-active. If I didn't know this kid I wouldn't ever think to medicate so young, but he needs it. |

Morning. My back is a little better. I have more freedom of movement, but it still hurts. No pain meds, I can deal with it. I stretched and stretched this morning. My son cut a piece of plywood and covered it in an old tablecloth for me to sit on. That helps. I replaced the lifts in my shoes and I will forgo my house shoes for a more supportive pair. I put some folded sheets under my mattress where it sags from my hips and hopefully I will be on the mend. That dang mattress. We paid 1400 for it and it has not held up at all. My husband said we can get a new one. That would surely help my back. So, I don't know what else I can do. It has never hurt this long before.
Housework today. Just organizing mostly. The big house cleaning will be on Tues and Wed when daughter can help. Great day all. Be thankful for our good health, nothing is as important. |

I have cut my decorations in the living room and dinning room down to half and I like it much better. We have a corner fireplace, so hard to decorate. Right now I just have three candles across it and I like it better. I'm saving some things for my son to use if he wants. Hello all. Busy, busy day. I went to the store and got my holiday groceries. Somehow I lost a bag of sugar on the way home! I will make some pies with sugar for the non NFNS guests at my table.
I just got home from the chiropractor. He popped me around and I will be going back tomorrow and Wed as well. Looks like I'll be getting an adjustment monthly forever. As long as it works, I'll give it a try.
As for my legs. I'm thinking I got what I paid for. It was only 250. My legs are better, but not all of the veins went away and I have brown spots from some of the injection sites that will have to be removed with a laser. But the several spots on my legs that looked "bruised" from the large concentration of spider veins are not there anymore. I am thinking about going to see a cosmetic doctor and see what they say. It will depend on money. I don't mind spending a bit, but only a bit.
Tonight I am going to supervise my son, or husband, clean the carpet in the living room. Should be interesting! |

The house smells wonderful. I bought a hoover carpet cleaner and that little machine kicked butt! Of course there's only so much that can be done with this carpet. It's 15 years old and we haven't cleaned it often enough. Kids, food, pets, traffic...it has taken it's toll. But I am not getting new carpet until the cats are all gone. So it's going to be awhile and I can live with it, stains wear and tear and all, until we have fewer pets. My husband worried it wouldn't suck up the water very well, but I think it did better than the one we rented. The carpet cleaner was my Christmas present. I am very pleased with it.
Tomorrow back to the chiropractor and then MIL to the doc. I wish I could stay home and finish the house cleaning I started. Darn. But I made a good dent yesterday so I will just make the best of it. I hate trying to cook and clean at the same time. Daughter will be home tomorrow so she is going to be a big help. Her roommate will not be with us this year so I am hoping to get more help out of her than normal. Today my friend wanted me to go out to lunch with her. I told her no. One of the restaurants in town has a buffet (man, can I get in trouble there!) for 4.99. I told her I bought a sweet potato for 29 cents. Who's the good shopper? Then I didn't even have time to eat it. Left overs for lunch and dinner. But all NFNS. I will be cheating on Thursday. Dressing will be my downfall. But I am going to try and minimize the damage. I'm still carrying my extra 5 pounds. I have to be good. |
