Good Morning all from Baltimore. I just called boss and told him I would not be in today, actually was shocked he made it in. But he didn't care that I was not coming in. We are through with month-end now anyway. By the way, I am an accountant at a hospital. So most of the day today I will be outside shoveling. I wish everyone a great NFNS day. :) Will check back in later.

Morning! You guys crack me up! Last night when I posted "go me" I was grinning from ear to ear. I loved your "go" posts and it reminded me of the TV Waltons "good night" routine. Anyway, after I added mine I was going to wait a bit and get back on but as I sat in my chair I started coming down with a huge head cold. Just that fast...one minute fine...the next miserable. So today I am taking it easy and taking cold meds and feeling sorry for myself. I swear, I haven't had this many rounds of illness since before my sinus surgery. I have been in and out a lot the last couple of days and it has been really cold and damp with the house furnace blaring around the clock so I'm sure that's why, but the timing stinks.

On a happy note I weighed in at 149.2 this morning. I have been my own "food police" the last couple of days. I didn't eat dinner last night because I felt bad and was not hungry. Tonight I'll make spaghetti and that's probably all I'll do today. Luckily I cleaned house yesterday. My Kingdom for a good book today!

Even if you have a zero weight loss your still down from where you were and that's no small thing. You are on the right track for sure.

I find that just in the crock pot that they stick to the bottom and burn but, the bain-marie method was perfect. This also worked better than cooking them in a low oven over night.

The French call this cooking technique bain marie . It consists of placing a container (pan, bowl, soufflé dish, etc.) of food in a large, shallow pan of warm water, which surrounds the food with gentle heat. The food may be cooked in this manner either in an oven or on top of a range. This technique is designed to cook delicate dishes such as custards, sauces and savory mousses without breaking or curdling them. It can also be used to keep cooked foods warm.

hey all, I wonder if I can join in with a few questions. (?)
I've gone off of sugar before and really enjoyed the increased energy and lack of cravings.
My main reason now to go back to NFNS is extreme cravings that run my existence. Also,
I recently had a few cavities and borderline high (still mostly good though) cholesterol.
Of course I'd also like more energy.

4 days ago I started it and went 3 whole days NFNS. Then something happened yesterday,
and both yesterday and today were not good in terms of sugar.

I think you guys recommend staying away from no sugar added products and sugar free jello,
is that right?

Have any of you been able to introduce those items temporarily and not slid back into
eating sugar?

Right now, since there is sugar and dessert items in my house (due to family members)
I felt like I had to buy a bunch of sugar free stuff, just to avoid the real stuff in the house.

Thanks in advance!

Connie

Welcome Bear. I guess suagar substitutes are as debatable as sugar is! It just depends on who you ask. Most of us on here believe sugar (and flour) to be very unhealthy. Not just because of calories. And some of us believe sugar substitutes are unhealthy. If your trying to get off sugar/sweets completely, there is a theory that you should eliminate all sweets, substitutes included, to keep your body from having cravings. It takes several days, but well worth it. I for one am so glad to be done with sugar. I never had much luck with substitutes. I do keep some Stevia around, but rarely use it. I was once a chocoholic to the extreme. Had to have it everyday...I don't even think about it now. And when I do think about it, it seems like a foreign substance. When I drink juice now it tastes too sweet. I water it down. Going sugar free is something anyone can do.

I had a great dinner, lots of fresh veggies.
Bear
posted 11-Feb-2010 9:15pm

thank you for your input. I absolutely agree that all sugars are to be avoided.
And I'm not one for excuses, but my family will not be getting rid of these random dessert
items just for me... so the sugar free pudding will be an emergency measure.

Tomorrow is another day one. My first goal is one week, just to give myself a tangible
goal. However, I'm in this for the long term.

Thanks again.

Bear, I, personally, think it's best to stay away from all triggers foods. But, for example, from time to time, like 3 times a week I might have some dark chocolate. I can eat that like a normal person because that is not a trigger food for me. I find it hard to eat lots of dark chocolate. I usually eat 1/4 or 1/3 of a bar (and the serving on bar is 2).

Good luck, you can do this. :)

Bronwyn, yes, it was saccharin and stevia that are the two safest choices of sweeteners in the article I read. In fact, it was my husband who years ago said it was safe. He said look at the pink packet, they removed the warning label saying it caused cancer. And guess what ... it is removed. Saccharin came from a plant imported from China, and in its original form, is a complex sugar extract from the plant itself. I, personally, don't use Sweet 'N Low, but my husband does. I use Stevia in the form of packets that I get from Trader Joe's. I use one in a Tall Starbucks Latte.

Morning. Slept terrible, splitting headache. Ugh!

Bear, this is a perfect opportunity for you to change your eating habits when your craving. Tonight try a cheese stick instead of something sweet. Or some popcorn. Sugar is a terrible option when your craving. It just creates more cravings. Protein will stabilize your blood sugar and will help with your pms. Give it try.

Hilda, I don't measure my half and half. I just pour it in slowly until I get the right color. Since I don't sweeten my coffee I may use more than most people. When I'm out, I generally use 2 or three small containers, the very small ones they keep in bowls on the tables. I never use powdered creamer. I also make my coffee super strong with a very strong bean, so you may want to start out with less and see how it goes. I drink 2 cups only as well. Good job on getting rid of that tin full of sin!

In 1978 or 79, I went with some friends to Montreal Canada. It was so beautiful. It had to have been late summer. We visited Ottawa and since we drove, we spent a lot of time sightseeing. A lot of people were speaking French. It is interesting that they speak French on the other side of the country as well. Bronwyn will have to give us a history lesson when she gets back! I remember having french onion soup in Montreal and watching Andre the Giant pulling a bus down the street.

Going into Memphis today with my friend. I would really rather not, but she is going to the health food store and I am out of muffins so I am going!

Connie and everybody else, I am the "half and half" queen. Well, I used to be. Wait 'til you hear this. I started drinking coffee in my 20's and always put half and half in it. In fact, I always used lots of half and half. I liked my coffee light. Anytime I ordered my coffee from Dunkin Donuts I would say EXTRA cream, no sugar. I am 47 years old now. Well, this past July, I went cold turkey and started drinking it black. Yep, cold turkey. My inspiration was my brother because he drinks it black. I tried drinking it black in the past, but was never successful. In fact, I always thought I would just give up coffee before I would drink it black. But it's been 7 months now and I haven't looked back. You may find this hard to believe, but I actually enjoy my coffee more now. I truly love the taste of coffee. And this is what I tell people, 'me giving up half and half in my coffee is like somebody else giving up cigarettes".

Connie, I use Earth Balance natural buttery spread. I get it at Trader Joe's. It's non-dairy, no trans fat, and an excellent source of ALA Omega-3. I have seen it mentioned in health books, so I assume it's a good alternative to butter. But butter isn't bad, at least it's natural, unlike margarine.

Ok, I'm wore out. Little one was with us most of the day. She is more of a handful the older she gets. She's 18 months now. She is starting to look so big. And boy, is she testing all her boundaries! I have plenty of patience with her, it's kind of a challenge and I love a challenge, but I am very unsure when it comes to punishment. I would never strike her...ever. Right now I just hold her hand (against her will) and tell her no...firmly. Really gets her going. It's hard not to laugh. She makes some crazy funny faces in anger sometimes. But she bounces back to being lovey dovey real quick. Ok, I'm off to bed. Night girls.

hey Debbie, maybe don't weigh yourself for a few days if that will make you feel better.
Consider this afternoon a whole new day and don't be hard on yourself.
All we can change is the future.

I feel that way right now, basically. This is day four and I have not had anything
NFNS except a small amount of dark chocolate. However, I've had about two servings
of sugarfree stuff each day because of my intense pms cravings. To me, that feels
like failure, or just not sticking hard enough to avoiding *any* sweet stuff but oh well.
My cravings should much much less in about a day...

hope everyone is doing well today.

Debbie, for sure, don't weigh for a couple of days. Maybe at least three days. Get back on track. remind yourself why your doing NFNS. Really spend some time thinking about it and thinking it through. If you consider it long enough you will realize it's what you really want. It doesn't matter how many other people say it to you, you have to feel it for yourself and when we get off track like that, we need to concentrate to get back where we need to be. You can do it!

Bear, look at your sugar free stuff as a stepping stone to get off sugar completely. After awhile, maybe you can let go of the sugar free items too.

We had a light dusting of snow last night, more today and more in the forecast at the end of the week. I can't remember when we have had so much of the white stuff here! What a year for snow. My head feels tons better today...yippee! Throat still sore and plenty of congestion left. But I need to get some stuff done so I'll try and keep a vaporizer going wherever I'm working.

Great day ladies!

Hi Jen, Welcome.

Hi everyone.
Thanks to your suggestions I am going to take the plunge and attempt no sugar-free stuff as well. None so far today. I am so nervous this week due to waiting to see whether I am in the running for a job... and so irritated due to hormones that I am trying to direct all this negative energy at sweeteners.

In general I feel quite blessed in life, this week is just tough. I figure I will try to jump these two hurdles at the same time. We'll see how it goes. Between now and Friday (when I find out about the job I will probably not get) I am going to try to have no sugar and nothing processed/artificial either. I remind myself how carefree I felt when I was NFNS in the past after I made it through the initial week of cravings.

I hope everyone is doing well this evening.

Debbie, that's okay, it happens to the best of us. Gosh, I love sweets with coffee too. I so feel your pain. Hang in there.

Bear, me too. I'm doing good with the NFNS, in my 2nd week and my only splurge is dark chocolate. I'm trying not to "OD" on it like I did the last time I tried to give up just no flour.

One thing I like about this site is people sharing foods they like that are NFNS. Like cottage cheese and tomatoes. I had never eaten those together in my life. Now I really like it. I am thrilled to discover all the steamed vegetables. Someone on here told me to look at frozen vegetables instead of canned. I had never tried hummus before. Frozen grapes. Ezekiel cereal and bread and English muffins and tortillas. Hamburger patty with guacamole. Sweet potato baked "fries".

Debbie the week-end is the hardest,"forgive yourself and move on". I think when we let our imperfections bog us down that it is easy to give up and eat all the wrong stuff. Try to do better next week-end, maybe planning your week-end eating.

Connie I do live close to Banff.....which is in Alberta. The Olympics are at Whistler in British Columbia and that is close to 1000 kms. west of me.

Welcome Jen and you are not the "lone ranger" with (lose, gain, get frustrated).....I am the Queen but I am hoping to give up the title, I have never been in favour the monarchysmile

Hilda for sure veggies are so helpful,,,,good for us and low in calories and can be quite filling. I was at least one of the people on here that suggested you switch to frozen.....canned veggies are so lacking in nutrition and full of sodium.

When was K10's month up?

You are all so encouraging and understanding. I have not been exercising but I want to start again. Now that all the sickness is gone and the kid will be back in school tomorrow (finally)I'm hoping to get my own routine back in place.

How many miles is 1000kms? 250?
Good night all.

Today is the day. Son is out the door headed to school. He took his medicine for the first time. I'm very nervous for him. He didn't look happy. Bronwyn, What kind is your son taking?

Welcome Jen. I love that your reading the back posts. There is so much info to be found there, things we would forget to mention now. You will learn so much by doing that.

I'm not weighing for a couple of days. Enough said about that! I am starting to get better, I think. The vaporizer I ordered is defective. What luck. I'm sending it back and ordering a replacement. I think if I could have had one running at night I would have been better faster. And of course, I could have really been productive over the weekend with husband out of town...but no, under the weather and son making goodies here and there. Sometimes our best efforts are weak against multiple issues that occur at the same time. But, everyday is a new day and another chance to do the right thing. Winter really is hard on NFNS. We still have snow on the ground this morning. The roads are fine though. The temps remain very chilly.

Lot's to do today. Bronwyn, how was your trip? Debbie, be strong for your son. He will be ok because he has a great family that will stand with him no matter what he goes through. Hilda, I haven't visited those sites in awhile either. Maybe tomorrow I can.

Morning all.

Debbie, I bet it will go smoothly but I can understand why you're nervous. Hang in there.

Today is day 5 NFNS for me, but of course the cravings are still strong. I'm throwing away the sugar free ice cream and a jar of sugar free chocolate sauce!

There are lots of good fruits and veggies on hand, ezekial, good pb, fage yogurt, etc.
And it's a good thing the agave syrup is in unopened bottles, I don't think that would help me right now.

Honestly I'm nervous to eat dates, even though I've never binged on them, but raisins should be fine.

Good luck all!

Debbie I know how you feel about the drugs. I struggled with the idea of him taking them since it was suggested in grade 3. In fact I home schooled him for years to avoid pressure for meds. My son is taking adderall and when he was diagnosed that med. I could only think of all the horrible articles on line I had read about it. I think you come to a place where you can see that your child is not able to progress and he needs help and you have to have some faith in the Drs. sometime (I guess). It is like you just have to do something or else you know he will continue to stumble through life unable to pull it together. If your son is A.D.D. I think he will notice a difference right away.....like when he comes home I think he will be able to report some benefits. However be aware that bad habits don't go away because of taking meds.....they can help you but it would be unrealistic to think that now the problem is solved.....next case. You will continue to be frustrated by some of the things you were frustrated with before but this time you can expect more and try to work through changing habits.

Connie the visit with family was nice.....hard to figure points though and I am worried about this weeks weigh in....a little off track with recording and figuring points.

Connie, I tried the half and half today. It is so good. I used the Splenda too, but I will try to wean myself off it. Made a trip to Aldi's to get the bags of frozen fruit and berries and some steamable veggies. I also bought some turkey meatballs.

Our schools are 2 hours late today, so I am enjoying a little "me time" on the computer before we have to leave for school/work.

I actually had a thought about weighing myself -- I don't know if I can do this, but I am almost tempted not to weigh myself until somebody notices. Maybe I'll wait until a family member or coworker says, "have you lost weight".

In the past I have always been a scale-a-holic and I would let that number on the scale dictate my mood for the day -- and I'm so sick of that. I actually wanted to get rid of the scale, I wanted to give it to the GoodWill or something, but husband refused. So now it's down in the basement in utility room with washer and dryer. I find the best indicator of weigh loss for me is my clothes. I have no clothes with elastic in the waist, so if things get tight I feel it right away in my pants. Long gone are the days where I feel on top of the world, and then 'boom" -- get on the scale and my whole mood can change in a second. Thus sometimes causing me to binge that day as well. So I feel like not only did I give up flour and sugar, I also have given up my obsession with the scale.

Anyway, just want to wish everyone a wonderful NFNS Day!

~Tammy :)

Morning all.

Tammy that's cool about losing the scale obsession, it sounds like you have a healthy mindset.

I am so looking forward to losing some of the food obsession, hopefully.
It happened before when I was NFNS for enough time. Reading through the old posts it sounds
like it happened to you guys too after sticking to it for a while...
Right now I am fully obsessed and I think it makes me eat more and also more often, yuck.

I might weigh after I lose the period weight, in about a week.
However, I didn't really plan to weigh much at all, and really prefer to go by how clothes are fitting.

Good luck today all!

Morning all. Debbie, so happy to hear a positive result with your son. Have you talked with his teachers? Maybe they could come up with a plan to really boost his grades since he is now able to help himself. In my experience, teachers will go above and beyond for a student when they know everyone is really trying to do all they can. Just a thought. I'm so happy for you. Sorry about the dryer. Good luck with that.

The great "scales" debate! I have to say, I really enjoyed weighing everyday when I started NFNS. When I started this program I began eating so differently, and so much less, I saw results quickly. I know that doesn't happen for everyone...I'm not expecting it for everyone. But I do know I didn't let the scales ruin my day. I was very used to the number being too high. It just was what it was. I felt so empowered when I found NFNS. Even if the scales hadn't moved so much, I was happy to have found a healthy way to eat. A way to eat that would fit me for a lifetime. It was immediately a long term commitment for me. Of course, NFNS works over time. It's important to have an accurate scale if you are going to weigh at all. If your scales are ancient, you might want to invest in a new one. Don't be afraid of the scales. Weigh when you want to and then don't worry about it. If your afraid to weigh because you haven't stuck to the plan, well that is something else.

With any luck at all I can stay home today and clean house. Great day ladies.

Hilda, absolutely. Today I brought to work the following items, mozzarella string cheese, roasted red pepper Hummus, natural applesauce, green beans with olive oil, Parmesan cheese & slivered almonds (will have to post the recipe on here one day). Also, I have two squares of Godiva 85% Dark Chocolate as a treat.

Debbie....great about sons first day....there are good things to come!

Yes the scale, how it can rule our lives, eh! Last Friday when I weighed in and had lost weight for the 3rd week in a row I had such an endorphin rush that I was like walking on clouds for hours that day. Now, had I not lost weight I would have super crashed. I hate the scales having so much power over me......week 4 weigh in coming up Friday is already scaring me. With all that being said.....I still think I need the reminding that the scale gives me. I think it benefits me to weigh in once a week at WW.....it is like I have this goal in place and I am aiming at that. It isn't nebulous it is concrete......and it helps me to get back at being more accurate with my point counting if I have got kind of "loosey goosey" with that.....you pull in the reins because the big weigh in is coming! So far that is working for me and so I will continue with that plan. So that is what it all comes down to....is what works for each of us and we can have success with, feel good about and keep on doing! It isn't magic......it is work and commitment!

Hilda I have success with making something I can eat for a couple of days.....chili, a soup or whatever and being able to grab it and not think about it too much when I am hungry.

One more thing......like last night when I got groceries I stopped and looked at the chocolate bars. Everyone here knows that has been my big challenge......not eating chocolate. I was holding a really good quality dark chocolate bar in my hand. My mind was saying, you are doing well you can have a little of that bar and then just put it away. I turned it over and read the nutritional info and a light bulb went off in my head.......no way can I eat just a little for beginners (that is just the truth) and looking at the calories, fat grams and no fibre......I realized that the points would be so high that I couldn't eat anything else and that I would then be really hungry. Also I have my weigh in on Friday and I want to lose but if not lose, for sure I don't want to have gained! I put back the chocolate bar and truthfully I never thought of it again until now......it didn't call my name throughout the store or through the evening at home.

Congrats Bronwyn! That is excellent news... and inspiring to us newbies.

I really do feel like I'm gaining weight, it must be the pb.
So, I'm going to cut that out for a bit. I also might not check
in here for a few days so I'm not focusing so much on food...
Will stay NFNS and check back in soon.
