You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

This book helps you break the addiction and get on track for eating healthier while losing that extra weight.

I think I'm going to wean off my Cymbalta. Has anyone done this before? How did it go for you? I KNOW THE WITHDRAWL CAN BE TERRIBLE AS I went cold turkey off Zoloft once and it was horrible. I don't recommend it. I feel flat and emotionless. I also feel lazy with no ambition. I'll definitely talk to the doc about it. I was thinking that since my brain tumor was removed I may not need the anti-depressant anymore. Maybe I am ADD also? Or maybe I need nothing? My Psychiatrist said he thought the tumor may have been causing my depression

Debbie, do talk to your doc before you start the weaning process. Some antidepressants are worse than others when it comes to weaning.

Morning! I'm fine, so glad it's not my birthday anymore...all that hovering and asking if I need anything! I think I'm still full. I am going to eat very little for the next few days. Cereal for dinner, veggies for lunches. Oh shoot...I just remembered I have to take my MIL out for dinner after her doc appt today. Maybe I can get her to postpone that. Errands today and chauffering. Back to the real world.

I am definitely waiting day or two to weigh in. I know I need to keep myself busy to stay away from nibbling, and we have lot's of leftovers to nibble on.

Hi. I just started nfns two weeks ago and really like it, in part because whole grains are incorporated. Down about four pounds so far and feeling really good. I haven't seen any guidance on how many servings of grains per day are allowed/recommended, however. Am probably overdoing it. Anyone know?

Thanks.

You know all that talk about scales the other day, I might actually start weighing myself everyday. When I did WW I used to weigh myself everyday. Even though I went to meetings for the official weigh-in. I think seeing that number everyday, whether up or down might help me right now. And talk about motivation, now that I'm on facebook a few of my classmates and I want to get together to do a reunion this summer. Talk about motivation. :)

Yikes, they knew me around 135-140. I'm around 205 now. h e l p

Evening folks! What a day. I've gone from one extreme to the other. First, eating was right on and then I fell off. Also, couldn't get anything done, then ended up doing too much. Just no balance to be found. But today is almost over and I guess it could have been worse so I am going to consider it a good day.

I am 51. I woke up yesterday morning thinking I was 52, so I ended up giving myself my own bday present when I realized I still can't count and everyone thought that was funny. Whatever! I took MIL to the doc and it was rough. Her oxygen level is down so she needs a nebulizer. We went to get one and found out they gave her one a year ago and medicare is paying for it monthly. Ok, I have been through half her house, literally, and I haven't seen it. She doesn't know what they are talking about and she gets it confused with her oxygen, which her doc now wants her to be on 24/7 and she can't understand why. Sometimes she uses her inhalers, but only if she wants to. She has one working artery and emphysema. She just called me and wants me to call the doc in the morning and order her a finger reading oxygen monitor so medicare will pay for it. I'm still trying to explain the nebulizer to her. Geez, I need help with this. It's almost too much for her. Tomorrow they are bringing her portable oxygen tanks and a new nebulizer. I feel sorry for the guy that delivers them. She is going to give him a hard time. But that is tomorrow and I will be there and try to make sense of it for her. She is just so hard headed sometimes. She hit a parked Jaguar last year and still swears it was the Jag's fault. I'm really trying to wind down here, can you tell? She shouldn't be driving but she still does.

Ok, I'm going to try and relax and read and have sweet dreams. I realized this morning I haven't been taking my HRT for several nights. That could be why I'm wound up a little tight. Sorry guys, just needed to vent.

Good morning, nice smileys everyone!

On this point, I find that when I am happier it is 10X easier to remain NFNS and care less about food. Some things that are especially helpful are trying to worry about or dwell on what I have control over, getting good sleep consistently and exercise. The last two I've been really good about for almost 2 years (not before that though) and the worry stuff I'm always working on.

I also wanted to ask a question: what vitamins do you guys take regularly? I take Calcium, D, fish oil (which I have read really helps with emotional stability and happiness), and Emergen-C.

Have you guys heard of Emergen-c? I can't tell you how helpful this has been to me for the last couple of years. I take it twice a day. It's a multi-vitamin powder that you mix with water and drink, thereby absorbing more efficiently I have heard. It does have fructose, but no "bad" sugars or artificial ones. You can get it at Trader Joe's but also other places, I'm sure online as well. It's usually $9 for thirty packets and SO worth it.

The main ingredient is B-vitamins, which most of us are lacking in our diets.

Good luck today all!

Are you sleeping okay? For me, that is number one, and if it is off, then pretty much all bets are too.

Are you drinking? This is probably number two, at least for me. I avoid it unless it is a holiday or a birthday, etc. It just brings me down if I drink more often than this.

Debbie.....I too struggle with perfectionism.....failure to be perfect and then throwing in the towel. I also am addicted to food. Okay for me what is working is to be accountable to a weigh in day and to a certain number of points a day. For some reason this has empowered me not the opposite.....it has given me a something to embrace and work with. Hugs Debbie.....figure out what you are going to do and get started....the way things are now is just too discouraging and will keep you down and depressed. Debbie I so totally have been where you are....and thought I could not move fore ward....you can and you will. JUST DO IT! Nothing complicated,,,keep it simple.

Bronwyn, I am so happy you are continueing to lose!! Great job! Sorry about the funeral. smile

Thanks for the support. I am sleeping good. I take melatonin sometimes and that helps keep me asleep. I think I've been sleeping too much really. I am on two medications that make me not only sleepy but just plain lazy. I'm looking into weaning off of the antidepressant. It is very depressing to have no accomplishments. My mind is foggy and I'm thinking its the meds. As for drinking, you are right. Its just no good for me. I try not to drink but when I do I havbe a hard time stopping. We used to buy a box of wine that should have lasted a while but we (husband and I) seemed to drink it way too fast. He gave up drinking for lent. I have a drink every couple of weeks but it ends up being the entire bottle and I always want more when its gone. So drinking isn't such a good idea for me.
I'm not offended at all. These are real issues in our lives and we should feel safe to talk about anything. Thank you Bear .

I went to the chiro office today and while I sat waiting the screen displayed positive messages, one right after the other. It was positive thinking day there! And I thought of you Debbie. I don't know, but maybe you should go in and talk to your doc about whats going on. You have said some very "telling" things on here. Feeling foggy and lazy and unable to get on top of your eating. Hi all. Thanks for the nice welcome. I'm turning 50 this fall and have promised myself to lose the extra 15 pounds that I've been carrying around since my second son was born 13 years ago. I also just want to feel healthy and fit before hitting that milestone and for once am giving myself ample time to do it. I'm glad to have stumbled upon nfns. Such a healthy, positive way to eat. Feeling happy for him and sad for me -they grow up so fast!

posted 26-Feb-2010 2:07pm

Good afternoon all.

I'm finding that even when I am NFNS for a good stretch of time, like right now, I seem not to do well with the advice on eating several small meals through the day for metabolism. I'm beginning to doubt that my metabolic rate would take much of a hit from eating regular meals (with no snacks) or even skipping meals.

For example, this morning I was not hungry for breakfast so I didn't eat anything until 1:30pm.

I didn't notice any weight loss (by how clothes are fitting) until I also began following a rule to only eat when I can actually hear my stomach rumbling.
This is just what seems to work for me.

I'm still struggling to avoid eating one sugarfree pudding at night...
I'd like to make a habit of having a date and maybe some plain yogurt instead.
Still, the fact that my body is not *requiring* a regular sugar dessert every night
feels like a bit of progress.
TammyGirl
posted 26-Feb-2010 5:37pm

Welcome Dana.

Oh Bear, I would not go that long without eating something. I heard your metabolism is like a fire, and when you wake up in the morning you need to "stoke" it. You need to put logs on the fire to keep it burning. I'll never forget that -- in fact, you should eat something within the 1st hour of waking.

I still struggle with dark chocolate. That seems to be my big distraction now. Like I said previously I would be an A for giving up flour. That, to me, has been easy. But the sugar part is more like a C.

I would like to count calories but that seems hard, I would be better at counting points since I did that for years!

Take care, ~Tammy

Guess what I have been doing all morning -- testing various online calorie counter journals. I even went to sparkpeople like you suggested Debbie. I even went to the one I used to go to years ago, Fit Day. And in all 4 sites tested; I did the same product search, it was for something I get from Trader Joe's ... McCann's Oatmeal. Do you know that My Fitness Pal was the only one who brought up the item when I did a search. It came up with the official name - McCann's Quick Cooking Irish Oatmeal. So my first instinct turned out to be the best one for me. Sparkpeople was okay, page was just too busy for me. When I typed in McCann's oatmeal on Sparkpeople the item that came up was Quaker Instant Oatmeal.

I really like the layout of My Fitness Pal and it appears they have thousands of food items to get the calorie count. They even had the calorie count for my 1/2 portion of salad that I got yesterday at Panera Bread.

I actually tested 4 websites this morning -- crazy. I guess I need to get a life huh. :-}

Morning all,

Yea Tammy!!!!

Now, I don't want to go around giving bad advice... but just in my case, I bought a small jar of sugarfree choc. sauce. Surprisingly, it stayed in the house for several weeks and is still here. I don't know if that helped me transition away from choc. or if going cold turkey would have been better. I know sugarfree can increase cravings so it may be a terrible idea. I do know that I personally need to have little rewards, at least at this early stage. At first they were sugarfree, now I'm trying to move them in the direction of dried fruits, etc. There really are some healthy NFNS dessert options.

For everyone, a Chinese proverb from the Olympics: The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

I've really enjoyed the Olympics this time around, so inspiring. I think of all the various points at which each of them felt like giving up, for whatever reason, and chose not to.

The cool thing about going off of all (incl. sugarfree) sweeteners
is that fruit, dried fruit, carrots, and even broccoli (weirdly) begin
to taste incredibly sweet! I know everyone knows this already but I
thought I'd chime in.

Good luck today all.

Good morning. The recent posts have me smiling from ear to ear! I am actually feeling blissful this morning. I went back to sleep after I woke up and now feel well rested. My butt has been dragging the last couple of days. Daughter is home for the weekend and I do love it when I wake up and everyone is here. Husband is in the kitchen getting breakfast ready. How lucky am I this morning?

Ok, so the challenge is a go. I'm in too. This is for you newbies, go through the pantry and if isn't NFNS, dump it or give it away. Do not treat your body like a garbage disposal. If you shouldn't be eating it...DON"T EAT IT! Don't put it off until Monday, why would you do that? What good can come from continuing to eat badly. Make your decision firm. You are going to lose weight starting right now. If you say one thing and then do another you are embracing a very bad counterproductive pattern that will not get you where you want to be. Be happy that you now know what to do and then do it...no matter what.

Bear, watch out for those dried fruits. I was eating them, started gaining, and then Bronwyn pointed out they have added sugar. Very few are NS. For treats, why not buy a book or something? Get a manicure.

Ok, everyone have a great morning.

I am at the half day mark for NFNS and already I'm seeing a difference in my gut. Go me smile
No scale for me though. I just don't feel like I need it and the number won't be minus 50 pounds anyway. ha So of course I know I'm not where I need to be. Wouldn't it be funny if I only went by how my clothes fit instead of by a scale? When I can't wear my current size and need to buy smaller clothes I will know I've lost wight and I will weigh at that time to see how much I've lost. At that point it will be a sure thing.

I'm glad to know about your calorie counting site Tammy. My fitness Pal. I'll check it out next time I get a thought to.

Taking 9 yr old to the Library and 14 yr old to the eye Doc. later.
Oh,has anyone seen the movie Nine? Its at the dollar theater. I might go today with my honey.

Bear, I have enjoyed the Olympics a lot this year too. Last night I watched a lot of the figure skating On Demand.

Bear, I agree with the reward thing. In fact, I lost 80 pounds with WW (gained 40 back) but the only thing that saved me was using food was a reward. Clothes didn't help, jewelry didn't help, it was food. LOL Clothes are a "give in" because you have to wear clothes no matter what you weigh. And I have a lot of jewelry, so food was the reward that worked for me. I would treat myself to a nice meal out once I reached a big milestone, like losing 10% of my weight...or getting under a certain number, like 190. However with giving up flour and sugar don't know if food should be a reward. If so, it might be more to splurge on a glass of wine or a dessert. I really don't want to splurge on a meal of flour and sugar; that is not the intent this time around. But just wanted to say it did work for me in the past.

So the question of the day -- what rewards have worked for you guys in the past as far as weight loss?

I love to go out to eat! As for rewarding myself? I've never been successful enough to earn a reward. Yes, I lost 20 pounds 2 or 3 times in my life but always gained it back. My sister in law rewarded herself with a new book, and boots.

We went to a Mexican place to eat for lunch. I was wondering if the chips had flour in them but did not ask. I ate some, so if they had flour I messed up. If they didnt I now have 3/4 day behind me for NSNF. I ordered a dinner salad with ranch on the side and didn't eat the beautiful looking croutons. SO I am going to call me successful! Go me! smile

Now to check the time for my movie........
Have a nice evening everyone.

Debbie, the next time you go Mexican, order some rice and beans and guacamole. Mix it all up and use that as your dip. Add salsa too.

Anyone on here ever go to ebay? I just bought a wood cradle for 10 plus 13 for shipping. We are going to refinish it and make bedding for it from the Care Bear fabric. Too cute!

Connie, do I do eBay -- you bet'cha. In fact, this evening I had 5 auctions close and all of them sold!!! Woo-Hoo

I hadn't put anything on eBay in years. I mostly do Buying. But it was fun to watch my 5 auctions all week long.
I sold a Guess checkbook cover, two purses, and 2 unused makeup items. I'm so thrilled they all sold.

frown I had the dessert I fixed for my family. I didn't resist. I guess I have to start over.

Well Debbie...what happened? Maybe if you had a dessert fixed for yourself you could have resisted. You are in a tough spot. When I have strayed from NFNS it has almost always involved other peoples food! It is easy for me to not have forbidden foods in the house. I don't make a dessert unless it is NFNS. My family has become used to no regular desserts. The other night we were having pasta and my husband said "Is this your pasta? I like it, you can't tell a difference." I told him we have been eating that pasta for almost 2 years now. I think you caught without a plan (your own dessert) and that can be easily fixed. Think positive sweetie. Don't look at it as starting over...look at it as continuing on even better than yesterday.

Babysitting and a trip to the used book store with MIL and fabric store with daughter today.

Connie, what pasta do you get that has no flour in it? I thought all pasta was forbidden.

I am headed to this hotel later today to check out summer camps. It'll probably be around 50 camps represented at this expo. Hard to believe it's that time of year again.

It's called Tinkyada. It's made from rice. I prefer the darker pasta as opposed to the white ones. I guess the brown rice pasta. I have to go to the health food store to get it or you can order it online.

Tammy I got the notice for that camp expo too. It was through my 4th grade daughters school. When I got a load of some of those prices I decided we couldn't go. The only summer camp my kids ever went to were Christian camps through our church. But since we don't go to that church anymore we havent been to a summer camp. Its been a couple years now.

Connie, The dessert was planned and ingredients were purchased before I took your challenge and they were looking forward to it. I was the one who was committed to making it and I told myself I wouldn't have any but it is totally my most favorite thing to have. I will continue on instead of starting over. I think starting over is part of that perfectionism disease. You are right, continuing on is a better, more healthful way.

I want to try that pasta too. I havent ever even tried to get it.

Moving forward...................

Thanks Connie. I'll look for it at our local health food store.

Debbie, I know, camps are so expensive! Unbelievable really. I already have my son signed up for one camp. It's called Camp Invention and they are all over the country. The camp is only for one week only. But I already paid for it and got a discount. That's the problem ... a lot of these camps offer great discounts, but you have to pay in full now -- or at least pay half. And that gets expensive. frown

Can you tell I like the smileys now...LOL

I love to eat the brown rice pasta! I don't overdo it, which would be easy to do. I always cook mine 2 min less than called for. My sister in MI cooks hers 2 min longer than called for. Continue on Debbie.

That Fitness Pal website is so cool. They have message boards and I have introduced myself as a newbie..and got a great welcome.

I'm really looking forward to starting my calorie counting tomorrow. I'm going to be faithful with it for a full week at least.

I hate to say this but I did buy ranch dressing at Trader Joe's today -- and didn't even realize it until I got home it had sugar, but it's listed as one of the last ingredients. I never thought ranch dressing would of had sugar in it. The carbs were only 2.

I just yelled out to hubby -- I want to go to grocery store now to get a different dressing.

I wouldn't worry about the dressing. Some on here may not eat it though. My husband had gastric bypass surgery almost 6 years ago. His surgeon told him not to worry about the sugar in condiments because its so little. I made ranch dressing one time by adding yogurt to a dry packet of ranch dressing mix. It was great and no sugar.

Back from the grocery store -- couldn't find one dressing without added sugar. But Debbie, thanks, that is good to know. I might even just use olive oil and vinegar..which I do often anyway. smile

I like V & O to sometimes. Olive oil is actually good for you. But I really love the Ranch.
