I think I am coming down with something. I have a lymph node (at least I think that's what it is)under my jawline that is very painful and seems swollen. Now I am achy, but no fever. My oldest felt nauseated on our way home from school yesterday and she stayed home today. She feels significantly better since she used the restroom this morning. If you know what I mean? I had told her I thought it was because she ate an extremely large dinner on Monday night and she came out and said some of my favorite words. "Mom, you were right, I feel better now." Sorry if that was too much info.

I need to go sit in my lazy chair. Have a good night ladies.

I use balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
I guess there is a small amount of natural sugar in the vinegar, but it's not
something I use more than once a day.

K10, oh my gosh, me too, I have a lymph node under my jawline (just the right one) that is very painful and seems sore, not so much swollen and my throat has been scratchy the last 2 days. It feels like I ate something and it scratched my throat. However, today it seems on the mends.

I wonder if it's allergies...

I use balsamic vinegar and olive oil too, but I use "white" balsamic vinegar. It has an ingredient called grape mist. And I'm sure that adds sweetness, because it sure tastes good.

Her little girl is the delivery mechanism. We'll see. The weather has been nice here today too. Cloudy...always a chance of rain, but the sun came through plenty and the temps were wonderfully mild. My eating today was here and there, but all NFNS.

When it dropped my name, it was gone for a long time. I fully expect it will drop it again at some point and be gone for another long time. All I can tell you is eventually typing in your name will become second nature to you and not make you crazy! frown

I also have a burn just below my lip on the left side. I was tasting something for dinner night before last and it flipped down and burned me. When I woke up yesterday and felt it I thought at first it was going to be a pimple until I looked in the mirror. I wonder if the two could be related??? I doubt it though.

Off to rest.

I actually got it at Trader Joe’s. I don’t use it on everything, just things I think might have lots of chemicals (like grapes).

Connie and K10, hope you feel better soon.

I'm still not used to the volume of food I'm eating... I know I need to eat breakfast every day, I haven't always. And the lunch I just ate makes me feel like I'm overeating, just due to the fiber content and the resulting full feeling. I had baby carrots, a few broccoli florets, soy cheese, hummus and a handful of these vegetable chips. Just like potato chips but made of sweet potato, taro, and other veggies. So good!

A little over 3.5 miles on the treadmill this morning. I think I'll go tomorrow too. Tomorrow afternoon I go to my brother's house for his birthday. I do plan to have cake, or whatever they have. However, I'll get in a ton of produce before and after...

Bronwyn, where are you? I need your advice. Ok, so we have made a couple of NFNS casseroles and 2 batches of box muffins for the grieving family. The family count is now up to 9. So daughter wanted to make some cookies. Keep in mind, daughter is the family baker. I thought it would be good to make a cookie with something other than just sugar so we decided on oatmeal raisin cookies. I really thought that would be healthier, even though full of F & S. So my question to you is this...is there any nutritional value to these cookies? I realize the nutritional value would be low, but my thinking is there are some healthy components. What do you think?
Bronwyn
posted 11-Mar-2010 8:11pm

Connie I think oatmeal and raisin are a good choice. I always put raisins in my steel cut oats and don't use sweetener. What about Nikki's healthy cookies.....sweetened with banana and sunspire chocolate chips. I have had good luck with people liking those cookies and they are reasonably healthy especially for a dessert......unlike a regular oatmeal cookie they don't have any flour. In case you don't remember the recipe I will post it.

Nikki's Healthy Cookie Recipe

You can use unsweetened carob, or grain sweetened chocolate chips, or do what I did and chop up 2/3 of a bar of Scharffen berger 70%. I sort-of shaved half the bar with a knife and then cut the rest into bigger chip-sized chunks. You can make your own almond meal by pulsing almonds in a food processor until it is the texture of sand - don't go too far or you'll end up with almond butter. And lastly, the coconut oil works beautifully here, just be sure to warm it a bit - enough that it is no longer solid, which makes it easier to incorporate into the bananas. If you have gluten allergies, seek out GF oats.

3 large, ripe bananas, well mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup coconut oil, barely warm - so it isn't solid (or alternately, olive oil)
2 cups rolled oats
2/3 cup almond meal
1/3 cup coconut, finely shredded & unsweetened
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
6 - 7 ounces chocolate chips or dark chocolate bar chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, racks in the top third.

In a large bowl combine the bananas, vanilla extract, and coconut oil. Set aside. In another bowl whisk together the oats, almond meal, shredded coconut, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until combined. Fold in the chocolate chunks/chips.The dough is a bit looser than a standard cookie dough, don't worry about it. Drop dollops of the dough, each about 2 teaspoons in size, an inch apart, onto a parchment (or Silpat) lined baking sheet. Bake for 12 - 14 minutes. I baked these as long as possible without burning the bottoms and they were perfect - just shy of 15 minutes seems to be about right in my oven.

Makes about 3 dozen bite-sized cookies.

Too late. We already made the cookies before the argument ensued. The family are all small people, not that they should not be eating NFNS, but I don't think sugar is an issue for them. Also, I think sugar is a better option for gifts...Splenda is love or hate stuff. But my question for you Bronwyn is this...is there any nutritional value in oatmeal raisin cookies? More than a regular sugar cookie? Any redeeming qualities at all?

Bronwyn
posted 12-Mar-2010 4:31am

Connie I so definitely would not make the cookies out of Splenda either. In my opinion a oatmeal cookie is a better choice than a sugar cookie.....but both are dessert and have sugar in them. I think the cookie recipe above is a good choice because it doesn't have white flour or any flour actually and it is sugar free if you use the sunspire grain sweetened chocolate chips.

Bear the coconut butter I recommend is: Artisana Organic Coconut butter (not oil but coconut butter with real pieces of coconut in it). It is ridiculously expensive and I use it very sparingly....I use it in the 3 min. chocolate cakes (no flour no sugar) and the above cookie. You have to like coconut to use it.....strong coconut flavour.

Debbie dear....can you believe I have not picked up any melatonin yet.....I need that for my sleep and something for my memory smile

Morning all. I didn't get to weigh in this morning before I started drinking coffee. I'm off to work today...I could really, really use a day off. This week has been terrible. Last night before I went to bed my daughter came in to tell me her HS math teacher was rushed into surgery with a blood clot in her lung and one in her brain. The teacher was only about 6 or 7 years older than her students so they all bonded. She was also the cheer leading coach and organized math competitions with other schools. My daughter was active in both groups.

Here's what happened with the cookies. I think I can think more clearly this morning, but yesterday I was pretty upset. When daughter and I were discussing what to make I really wanted her to do the oatmeal raisin because I felt they had raisins and oats, not just sugar and flour. NFNS cookies were not an option because daughter wanted a regular cookie. Not my call, but I did want something that was a little hardier...not just sugar. Ok, so we had been cooking for hours when my friend came over. She questioned our choice of cookies. I said I thought the recipe we chose was the better option. Well, my friend decided to argue with me...right there in my kitchen...about my choice. She said the sugar countered all the benefits of raisins and oats and that they had no nutritional value at all. I said out of every hundred calories, maybe 5 had nutrition. She argued that I was wrong. I kind of blew a gasket. I have had a rough week and I had been cooking all day and that seemed like the final straw! She doesn't even eat a NFNS diet. I was so upset. I told her to go home. Then I thought, well maybe those cookies didn't have any nutritious calories in them. Hence my question to Bronwyn. I just didn't know who else to ask. I am at a point in my life where I don't want to argue with anyone about anything ever. My friend did email me last night and apologize for her behavior and I was glad to read it. But I also really want to be right (of course!) and I want to know the cookies, although something I wouldn't eat, were the lesser of two evils.

Time to get moving. You all have a great day and will try to have one too.

Of course anyone 16 dosnt want their mom to be right. heh

Bronwyn
posted 12-Mar-2010 11:39am

Connie I wasn't sure why you were so adamant about the oatmeal cookie but, I do totally agree with you that the oatmeal is a better choice than a sugar cookie. I cook steel cut oats with raisins in it and by time my husband and son put sugar on it,,,,,,,it is almost a cookie frown I have really got to the point that I simply don't need any sugar on my oats when I cook them with raisins, so I am intolerant of the crew when they top theirs off with a bunch of brown sugar.

I am a fan of Melatonin as well. I did have weird dreams for a few weeks but either they subsided or I don't remember them anymore! Did anyone else experience that? I haven't had time to read all the posts yet so my apologies if that has been asked already.

I was also wondering if many people just avoid sugar and flour and still lose, or do they watch the fat and red meat as well?

posted 12-Mar-2010 4:49pm

Welcome Mattie, I love your name! I think the dreaming comes from how deep we are sleeping while taking the melatonin. Just a guess.

I was losing weight when I was NFNS. I didn't avoid fat or meat but I did limit my portions to modest ones. Dr, Gott's book says to choose low fat dairy. And choose lean meats. I think real butter is better than the fake stuff full of partially hydrogenated oils. Also fats like avocado, olive and nut fats are healthful ones that promote the good cholesterol in our bodies. This is not a typical low fat or low carb diet. It is low simple carb but there are plenty of complex carbs that we can have. Ezekiel bread will be your best friend. I love Ezekiel English muffins are great.

Also we have learned the evils of high fructose corn syrup. Of course a suga to be avoided but way worse for our bodies then regular sugar.

Just to high light a few things.

WHat are your goals Mattie?

Made it home...I beat the rain so that was nice! The lady I worked for today is the retired nutritionist. She sang the praises of raisins and oatmeal. Of course I probably could have told her I put sand in them and she would have said they were ok. She likes me very much! But seriously, I just needed to know, after almost 2 years of NFNS self and book educating, that I wasn't completely wrong headed about the cookies. I may have been a little "nutty" yesterday, but I'm back to normal today. Just for the record, don't any of you show up in my kitchen and argue with me. It's not nice.

Welcome Mattie. I adhered to the NFNS eating plan very strictly and lost about 40 lbs. I also watched my portions and though I didn't watch my fat so much, I wasn't able to get the ezek breads nor did I eat many crackers etc while I was losing. I really upped my veggie intake, fresh or frozen and am still trying to work fruit into my diet. Not many fruits I like. I love this way of eating. I feel so much better. I had decided to eat this way in hopes of staving off diabetes, which run rampant in my family. I weighed somewhere around 185 when I started and began losing immediately. I would have continued to eat this way even if I hadn't lost weight...it felt that right. I wasn't trying to lose weight before I started, I just didn't have a clue how anymore. So give it a go...I always advise against slipping and sliding and trying to outsmart the plan with cheats here and there. It just never seems to get anyone where they want to go so why do it?

Hello ladies and welcome Mattie.

So I went to the doctor today since my fever came back last night and my lymph nodes were getting larger and larger and my burn was looking worse. They hooked me up to an IV with 2 different antibiotics and I have to go back tomorrow AM for another IV. I also will have an oral antibiotic for 10 days. The doctor thought the burn caused the lymph nodes to respond and the fever. I still don't know. He also took a culture of the burn. I have some Silver Sulfadiazine to put on the burn. It started out as a tiny little mark by my lip and it is now as big as a cigar or more. I am feeling better and I hope my fevers are done. I will keep you posted.

I just seem to be in a good mood all the time now and unsure why -- but then I was thinking it has to be the NFNS lifestyle. Anybody else notice this change?

I also burnt my tongue and put sugar on it, that actually worked to take away the burn. This happened on Tuesday night. All these "sick" posts are so worrying! Hilda, good grief! Bless your heart...you sound miserable too. Steroids are nasty. But it sounds like they are very necessary for you. I had to take some after my sinus surgery (the best thing I ever did!) and I just couldn't tolerate them well at all. I ended up just stopping them. I think I took about half the bottle before I threw them out. But I wasn't sick, just healing and the healing was going along nicely so I took the chance. You need them and I am so sorry you have to go through all the ugly side effects. Hopefully you will start to clear up and feel much better soon. Good job on the eating choices. If you have gained any weight from the steroids, it will melt off quickly once you are off them. It seems late in the season for all of these bugs to be making the rounds.

Debbie, let us know what you find out about your bump. I hate bumps.

K10, I get fever blisters on my lip every other year or so. I hate them. But your burn will go away eventually. Just don't take any family pictures for awhile!

Browyn, how did the weigh in go? I forgot to ask last night. 148.6 this morning. Yippee! I had cereal for dinner last night with 10 prunes. I do love prunes and they are kind to me so enough said there. I feel much less puffy, something I always feel when I eat F&S. But I am wanting to get back down to 143. If I could get under 145 I would feel back to normal. And my pants would fit comfortably again.

This morning is great so far. No one has called me for a favor or anything. I'm home all day and plan to alternate rest with light housework. I think it is going to rain today so a nice day to stay in.

My sore throat went away as quick as it came -- as soon as we got rain it went away so I am calking it up to spring allergies. Unsure if it helped but I took garlic pills for a few days, nature's own antibiotic supposedly. Wow steroids are wicked, that's all I can say about them. I was on them once and didn't finish either.

It's going to be a raining weekend here in Baltimore. I promised son I would take him indoor rock climbing. He only ever did it once and that was like 5 years ago. It's $18 for three climbs.

Thanks for the warm welcome! It is embarrassing but my goal was to see if I could get through ONE day sticking to no flour and no sugar. I have tried so many diets in recent months and I haven't even made it one day!! So far I have been doing this for several days and I don't feel like food is consuming me anymore, it is such a relief! I am reading the book now.

I did find ketchup made with agave. I do not use artificial sweeteners. The health food store where I live will order requests as long as we have the name brand so I am looking for stevia and agave products, if anyone knows of any.

I am sorry so many here have been ill. I will be praying for a speedy recovery for all and thanks for the advice.

Welcome Mattie. Sounds like you found a good plan.

Afternoon all. I hope you guys feel better soon, Hilda and K10.
Nice take no prisoners attitude, Connie. smile

I just got back from my brother's. Let's just say I'm *really* looking forward
to getting back to 100%, I feel yucky and tired. I had an apple for lunch just to compensate for the damage, somewhat.

So happy to be back. Planning a restful weekend, which I hope everyone else
can have too.

It has been so crazy here as I have cried with and watched the emotional upheaval my company is going through with the process of getting their child prepared for detox and treatment. I have no understanding of this disease but, I do have a huge amount of empathy. He is 29 years old and the problem is to even get him into shape to board a plane and head off to detox and treatment on Sunday. He wants to go, he wants help and change and yet he is drinking himself into a stupor until he passes out and then starts again.....this is his preparation for treatment. I guess it is some what like eating everything in site as you prepare to diet....both bad ideas. I have felt like they should clean everything out of his apartment, take away his money or whatever but apparently the treatment centre has advised to just let him go, keep him safe and that they will deal with it medically when he arrives on Sunday. I feel so sad and downhearted and it isn't even my child.

I am doing okay with the food. It seems like everyone is dealing with some issue at the moment but trying to do their best with food choices.

Time for daughter to go back to the dorm. If I had any stamina I'd take her right now.

This is the dreaded "spring forward weekend." I hate doing this. It literally takes me 6 month to adjust. I wish someone would put an end to it, leave it one way or the other.

Shrimp Scampi with rice pasta for dinner. I caught myself munching on NFNS corn chips today...I froze with chip halfway to my mouth and though "what am I doing?" My son had set the chips out and then just walked away and left them there. I put them away as soon as I realized what I was doing. I splurged and had 2 ezek muffins for breakfast. Good thing I did since I needed the energy to get all of my stuff done today. Basically everyone left me alone and I accomplished a lot. Feels good. I hope you all have had a good day...and Bronwyn I hope you house guest have some blessings in the future. That is a tough one. Alcohol is so evil for some people. It robs them of everything. I wish them all success in getting healthy.

I had a bag of steamed vegetables for lunch. They were so good, I think I could eat them every day. They were from Aldi (asparagus, carrots, sugar snap peas, red peppers and onions.) I think it was called Spring Mix.

I am feeling better today. Finished the steroids. 4 more days of antibiotics to go. I didn't wheeze when I tried to sleep last night. That gave me a much better night's sleep.

Not doing well. I went to urgent care again today to get my IV antibiotics. I am more swollen than I have been. I woke up this morning and my lip was so big, I cried. I am concerned to say the least. The doctors don't know for sure what is wrong. They don't know if the glands are swollen due to the burn, or if the reaction of the burn is a fever blister or what. I ended up sick to my stomach today and I need to go back in tomorrow. I just want to know what is happening. Please pray for me.frown

K10, I remembered that something like this happened to my son once. Sort of similar. He hurt his bottom lip, I can't remember how and a fever blister (?)looking thing developed. It took over his entire bottom lip. It was huge! He ended up on a round of antibiotics and it cleared up fine. But I had never seen anything like it. I can't remember if his glands were swollen, but I know when I get a fever blister mine do. It such a trauma to the tissue and a sensitive area on top of that. I have a feeling your burn has turned into a fever blister kind of thing. With the antibiotics it will certainly be fine. But do keep a close eye on it. The antibiotics may be the cause of your nausea. Try to relax honey...it will start to go down soon I'm sure. Have the doctors suggested any antiviral meds? I have something for when I get a fever blister. I don't know if that would help you or not. Your in my prayers.

149.4 this morning. I'm very pleased. I was worried I consumed too many calories yesterday...but still below 150. I am supposed to go to OR in three weeks with my friend for her court date. I really want my pants to fit well, not too tight. If I can get down to 145 I think I would be much more comfortable. Of course then I have to go through the whole "eating right while traveling." I tis going to be a challenge. But I think I'm up for it. I will be without transportation of my own so I'll have to be selfish and/or extremely limited in my selections. I just don't see us making trips to different food sources at mealtime. Maybe it will be easier than I think...I hope so.

Didn't get much sleep last night. Haven't decided what to do today.

If it is a fever blister there is an antiviral drug called Acyclovier(sp?)that can help if taken early with the first symptoms of a fever blister.

Hi, all. I am just starting nsnf diet and I am really craving bread and butter!! Where can I get some of this Ezekiel bread? Is there any breakfast cereal I can eat that doesn't have sugar or flour? How about peaches, apples, tangerines etc? How can I tell if no sugar added really means no sugar? I am a mess.
Connie
posted 14-Mar-2010 3:04pm

Sandi, your not a mess! You are now on your way to feeling and looking better than you ever have. NFNS is a book by Dr Gott and I highly recommend that you purchase it and begin reading it right away. It will answer all your questions, and we all will try to as well. Just as the name implies, NFNS is a diet without ANY flour or sugar. The only way to be sure of that is to read the ingredients list. If there is flour of any kind, or sugar (make sure you familiarize yourself with the many names sugar has) do not eat it. There are many wonderful foods you can have. All my cooking is NFNS and my kids eat it and love it. The Ezekiel bread products are found in the freezer section at health food stores and many main stream grocery stores as well. I am happy you found us, we will all help as much as we can. Now for stats...age?...weight...family life...how much do you want to lose? If you stick with this eating plan you will feel so good and lose weight too. Welcome!

My big problem now is, my husband had a bout with colon cancer a few years ago and because of this, I have to keep his weight UP! It is very hard to fix mashed potatoes and gravy and not eat any. But because of my arthritis , I need to get some weight of my knees. My doctor said this is a diet plan he can go along with. I am 68 years old (young?) and I weigh 165. I would like to get down to 140.

Sandi, if I were you I would go ahead and fix your meals NFNS. For your husband, could he just eat more? Is his diet restricted in any way, low fat, etc? There are ways of getting your husband extra calories without you being so involved you can't control your eating. I can cook for my family, husband and two grown kids, without problems. But when I'm babysitting 19 month old I end up cheating. Maybe because it's harder for me to have planned meals for little one, I'm never sure when she will show up and when she's hungry...she's hungry now. This is just going to take some thinking and planning on your part. I have lost almost 40 lbs on this plan, so the pay off can be great it you stick with it.

He was saying to get off coffee and drink decaf with almond milk and flavored Stevia. He said stevia comes in cinnamon and other flavors. He was all about healthy eating to avoid Alzheimers and Diabetes.

Geez, Hilda. No way am I going to give up my coffee. I will give up just about everything else. I do want to make some almond milk. I don't know if I would like it in my coffee. For some reason, and maybe I'm wrong, I think without F&S in our diets, our bodies can handle fat and coffee and everything else we eat without problems. Besides coffee is a natural diuretic and that's a good thing.

Wow K10, you are really still going through it! I reminds me of an antibiotic treatment my dad had once...it was for mrsa. He had to go in twice a day for 4 or 6 weeks. Anyway, antibiotics took over his life for awhile. Your feeling better is a sure sign you are on the mend. 14 pills a day! I think I would be eating yogurt at every meal, but even that might not be enough to counter all your meds. Here's something to think about. The last time I was at the doc and got antibiotics I asked for the pill that wards off yeast infections. I always get them when taking antibiotics. The doctor said I should do myself a favor and buy the 10 day treatment from the store. The pill doesn't work as well as the 10 day dose. I talked to a friend, a pharmacist, and he agreed. So I took the 10 day treatment. I started it 3 days into antibiotics and all went well.

148.0 this morning. I'm so happy!

Connie, he said to have decaf coffee. I had to give it up when I was sick because the steroids were making me so jittery and surprisingly I had no withdrawal. I drank a lot of decaf tea. Another doctor on tv said not to drink coffee at breakfast, but have one cup at lunch only. He was some old heart doctor and I didn't catch his name.

Hi All. Been gone a while but catching up on posts. Wow! Lots of not-so positive stuff going on out there! Sympathies and hopes for speedy recoveries to all afflicted. But sounds like good things are happening, too, with more pounds melting away and everyone's NFNS commitment seeming to stay strong. Weighed in last Thursday and had lost another pound. That's about 7 so far in a month and a half. Feels very s l o w, but good. About 7 more to go to hit my goal of 135. Am in awe of the people I've seen reporting losing 25 pounds or so in two months on this plan! Not sure how they do it....Well, I guess answer is they just eat less than I do (would insert smily face here if I remembered how).

Adding my welcome to Mattie as a fellow newbie.

Last night I roasted a chicken and cooked fresh asparagus. The chicken was really good, but made a huge mess in the oven. I have opened all the windows in the kitchen and dinning room while oven is on clean cycle. It's pretty nippy in here. Tonight I will have leftovers. I just had some cereal with prunes. I opted for the Uncle Sam's cereal rather than the puffed rice because the Uncle Sam's has more nutrition and fiber. I will be happy to post my meals, I have posted many of my recipes in the past and will again if anyone wants them. But this week I'm on my own so I will not be cooking much.

Afternoon all.

Congrats on your weight loss, Connie.

Good suggestion, Hilda. For me it's really helpful to have tasty spreads to go along with veggies. Hummus, soy cheese and bean dips have been great. I found a (NFNS) pinto bean dip by 'Desert Pepper Trading Company' that has 15 calories in 2 tablespoons. A whole 16 ounce jar has only about 225 calories. Compare that to 16 ounces of peanut butter for 2800 calories.

Soups that are good and wholesome are incredibly important for me, in terms of general satisfaction and getting enough fiber. I add soy cheese and feel like I'm indulging.

Spinach can be added to basically anything you eat. Sauteeing in olive oil with onions and garlic is really tasty.

I'm a huge fan of artichokes. That's what I'm having tonight, along with nachos. The chips have a lot of fiber, and the sides include that bean dip, fresh salsa and melted soy cheese.

Last night,,,marinated beef tenderloin steaks, mashed potatoes, a big pan of roasted asparagus, mushrooms, red pepper and onion, and a dish of fresh veggies....sliced avocados, tomatoes, onion, feta cheese, kalamata olives, shredded lettuce topped with olive oil and basalmic vinegar. I try to do lots of veggies.....some raw and some roasted. This morning Ezekial muffins spread with lite cream cheese and topped with smoked salmon and poached eggs, with a side of sliced tomatoes, avocado and onion topped with basalmic vinegar and olive oil. Also a side of sweet potato fries.

Later today I am having a big green smoothie.

Ok. I'm starving reading all these yummy sounding ideas. There's so much good food that we can enjoy. That's the best part of NFNS. I think it'll be a great help to share ideas. Makes planning easier. My go-to snack and sometimes stand-in for lunch or breakfast is a smoothie made with 1 cup of Soy Sense no-sugar added vanilla soy milk, 7 whole frozen strawberries and 1 frozen banana. Sometimes I'll substitute a tablespoon of NS peanut butter for the strawberries.

Going to do roasted asparagus, mushrooms and onions tonight. Thanks Brownwyn.
