Description
This diet book contains common-sense techniques on how to eat better and achieve a healthier lifestyle. It gets you to focus on foods that are nutritional and satisfying. Thus, you can both lose weight and become healthier in the process.
You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.
Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.
The approach is to keep things simple by just eliminating flour and sugar, the two primary food ingredients that are causing the obesity problem in America. Our culture has become addicted to sweets. This book helps you break the addiction and get on track for eating healthier while losing that extra weight.
History
Dr. Gott is a medical columnist published in over 350 newspaper daily. He is a practicing physician with a general practice in Connecticut. He's also the director of medicine at Hotchkiss School (a prep-school).
Criticism
Giving up bread and sweets may simply be too hard for some people. Sugar is in a great majority of products sold today. While the diet sounds simple, implementing it and sticking to it is quiet a challenge.

Lady Di...thanks for telling me about mini moo's. I will stick to half and half while at home, but it would be nice to have something to take with me when going out and not sure if I can get half and half. I think the two are comparable. Mini moo's have a few added ingredients that half and half does not, so, if you are looking to eliminate added ingredients, half and half might be better when you can use it. Bronwyn, please chime in with your advice. I know you are "funky ingredient free," so your input is always good. I think the only thing you need to consider is calories. Are you eating and drinking coffee?
I remember someone told me one of the reasons artificial ingredients was bad for us is because our bodies do not know what to do with them. How to digest them, I mean. So, or bodies waste precious energy on trying to figure that out rather than repairing itself, healing itself, etc. Makes sense to me.
Lady Di, you are doing so good. Don't stop the plan. Maybe you need to pay attention to your over all calories. Keep a diary and see how much you are eating. I think using whole grains sparingly is smart. If you think your calorie consumption is fine, just give it time. Your body needs time to realize the food you are eating is covering all it's bases. Your body will relax and let the fat go. Exercise is an option too. Try not to snack in between meals. If you must, make it something low cal and don't forget the water. I think the more we have to wait for the weight loss to begin, the more our bodies will respond over time. And remember, you are only talking about one week here. It could be next week you will have dropped 2 or 3 lbs. I know my weight loss has been faster, but I have a feeling about this plan. It is the one for us, I just know it. Don't stop now, and don't stress. Your still ahead of the game with 8 lbs down. | Lady Di

Thanks for the support...Oh trust me...I am not giving up...I feel so much better on this regimen...I used to get terrible headaches...since on this diet...I have not had one single headache...So there is no way I am going back to my old way of eating...even if I do not lose any more weight... But I will let you know what happens next...Have a wonderful evening... | Connie

Of course you are going to lose more weight!!!!!! I predict you will lose a lot more weight.
This a good example of what we have come to expect from ourselves. Our past attempts and failures have made us think we can't do it or we stumble around with little success until we give up. Surely that is because we believed in plans that not only didn't work, but set us up with bodies that resist change. We have to think "long haul." Today my son said he can't believe I've stayed with this plan this long. I told him it's because it's so easy. I couldn't stick with Slim Fast, South Beach, Atkins...the list goes on and on. But this plan is perfect.
I think it's great you are no longer having headaches. Very interesting too. I know I feel much better as well. I found out that high sugar intake is related to anxiety. Have you seen the high fructose corn syrup commercials? How it's equal to table sugar and fine in moderation? They fail to say that it's everywhere, so moderation is up in the air. Those ad people!

That is great advice Hilda. I stay out of the kitchen as a rule unless I am preparing a meal.
156 this morning. No problems at the bridal shower. They had petit fours and cookies and other sweets. Breads with sweet spreads, punch, etc. I saw ladies eating some things two at a time. I wanted to tell everyone there about NFNS. But I kept quiet. I wore my darling pant suit again, but I really wanted to buy something new. It's just not time yet. The wedding is at the end of November. Maybe I can still wear the dress I wore in Aug.
Great news, my mom called yesterday. She wanted info on my diet. She is overweight, not as much as she was before she had back surgery, 2 years in a wheel chair on a morphine drip, and then another back surgery to make everything better. She wasted away to nothing for a while there, but slowly the pounds have returned, despite her efforts to keep them off. She has been a diabetic for years. She also has high blood pressure and a bit of a heart problem. I want her to be happy and healthy. She eloped with my father when she was 15. She had seven daughters by the time she was 24. Her life has been somewhat difficult. Now she is happy and can enjoy grandchildren. I told her about the book and I'm going to flood her with advice. So everyone, keep your fingers crossed! I want this for her very much. My first words of advice for her will be;
It's easy to want to lose weight, the work is in sticking with the plan.
Before I started NFNS my sisters would sometimes say little itty bitty things about diet and exercise. But I always firmly said no. I wasn't ready. I knew when I was ready to go for it, I would.
OK, enough about me! How is everyone else. Hey Bronwyn...what's up? Later. | Connie

My official weigh day is Friday as you all know, BUT I weighed myself today. Two different times I weighed because I didn't believe the scale. I've dropped two and a half more pounds. This scale is whispering sweet things in my ear today. I can't lie, it puts a smile on my face to see the results. There was over a week when the scale didn't budge and then there it goes again. I'm seeing the effects on my body and its really giving me a happy feeling and the determination to keep going. Time for breakfast. Canadian bacon, and a bowl of Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs cereal with 1 % milk. Connie, I put some fresh tomatos in my 1% cottage cheese, YUMMY!! I can't wait to weigh 156 too. 205/194/150 Deb | Cammie

Good Morning to all!
I have been away for a couple of weeks, so it was fun tocome back and read all the posts. It is more challenging to do the NFNS when you are on the road, but didn't do too bad, but it is great to be back home and in control of my food! I still have not weighed myself, will do that this Friday and report with that.
I love oatmeal and have been sruggling to find a replacement for my brown sugar splenda that I used to mix in it, but this morning I think I found it. I found some SF apple butter, so I mixed that in along with my raisins, walnuts and flax seed,it was quite tasty!!!
Also I have a question, in some of the recipes in Dr. Gott's book calls for dried cranberries, can you buy these unsweetened or do I just need to buy the sweetened ones?
You guys are all doing a great job, keep up the good work!!

Debbie M...congrats!!!!! This plan just will not let us down. And I still find it so easy to stick with. I have emailed my mom "novels" with tips and recipes. She is very pumped. I will share your good news with her. Inspiration is so important in the beginning. I hope you smile all day today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and the next... My bra size hasn't really dropped enough to change sizes. I really think I'm losing from the ankles up. My thighs are far and away my biggest body parts and it is going to take awhile to get past them! But slowly they are whittling down. Tonight I am going out to dinner with kids at a mexican restaurant. Rice and beans with some cheese dip is what I will order. I'm going to stay away from the chips. I want to share my recipe from last night. It is so good and filling. I really want you all to try it.
Shrimp Scampi 1 1/2 lb fresh peeled shrimp (I buy the med size and butterfly it) 2 Tblsp butter Olive oil 6 sliced green onions 4 garlic cloves minced 2 tomatoes chopped 1/2 cup fresh basil (I have no idea what the dried equivalent would be, I'm guessing 1 or 2 tsp) 1/4 cup dry white wine (buy a cheap chardonnay, and don't skip this, it's important to add) 2 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper fresh grated parmesan
Cook shrimp in olive oil till done. Remove. Saute onions and garlic, adding more olive oil as needed, till translucent. Add tomatoes and cook till soft. Add butter and wine. Cook till butter is melted. Return shrimp to pan with veggies. Add salt, pepper, and basil. Cook, stirring, till heated through. Serve over rice and top with parmesan chheese. You may add a few sprinkles of red pepper fakes if you like things spicy.
This tastes amazingly great. It is beautiful and very healthy. You can't tell your on any kind of eating plan when eating this!
This morning I weighed in at 156. But I have seen 155 and even 154 a few times over the last couple of days. Very exciting. It will be several days before I see them permanently, but that is how this plan works. I love it!
Bronwyn....how are you? Great day everyone.

Cammie, I think all dried fruit is NS added. The drying process concentrates the natural sugar. That is why they have so many calories. I would avoid them if I were you. But if you must, you should really limit them. They are more like candy than fruit and if your trying to lose, well, real fruit would be a much better option. But a few on your cereal would probably be fine.
I'm so glad you all are back! But we miss Bronwyn...yes?

Hilda, go to cooks.com. I saw a jello salad recipe with chopped apple, lime jello and cottage cheese. The problem was it called for a graham cracker crust. I wonder if you could make a crust out of crushed pork rinds, Splenda and butter. Just a thought. My son made something the other night that called for bread crumbs and he used pork rinds instead so I could eat it. Anyway, good luck with your recipe. | Cammie

Hilda, with all the different types of apples in the stores, I have been making an apple salad with SF lemon yogurt mixed with different types of apples cut up and some walnuts thrown in! YUM YUM!! The lemon in the yogurt, keeps your apples from turning brown. I really think of this as a treat!!
Connie, I have never had pork rinds, do they have a strong flavor? I will have to try your scampi recipe it sounds great!!!!

Pork rinds are not my favorite, but they are ok. I don't think the regular rinds have a strong taste at all. They also come in bbq flavor. I ate them years ago when I tried Atkins. So, I am kind of burnt out on them. But I know they can be used in meatloaf, etc. Do try the scampi. My daughter wanted it last night. Everyone here loves it. And it's quick and easy. | Hilda

Morning everyone. Weighed in at 155 today. I have weighed myself at three different times this morning, so I think it's here to stay. That puts me down 30 lbs. I should celebrate. Just not with food.
I went shopping with daughter yesterday to the mall. Really, it's more than a mall. The whole, huge surrounding area is shopping. She is 20 and wanted to go everywhere and buy everything. And, she has zero money. That was a couple of hours of "no..no..no!" I think I did buy her a nose ring and a couple of books at Barnes and Noble. Anyway, it felt like exercise...all that walking.
I took her back to school with son. We stopped for dinner at El Chico's. Our food took a long time in coming and I ended up snacking on chips and cheese dip. I was really hungry. By the time I remembered my decision to not eat the chips, I had already devoured some. So there I sat, without my emergency bag of cashews in my purse. I'd left it at home thinking I wouldn't need it. Bad idea. So, I started eating chips again. I figured I have less than a 50/50 chance of them being NF. It seems most of the chips in the store have flour. But, I didn't get that bloated feeling, so maybe they were fine.
Lesson learned...never leave home without emergency stash of cashews.
I found an easy recipe for homemade peanut butter. I'll let you know how it turns out.
It's just about time for fall weather cooking, soups, stews, stuff like that. We have been having warm weather, but by the end of the week it will cool off. So, I'll share those good recipes too. I am going to share a recipe today that I really like. I compare it to mac and cheese because of the cheddar in it, but my niece said she thought of it more as mashed potatoes. Anyway, it's a keeper so give it a try.
Butternut Squash Au Gratin 2 lb butternut squash (1 squash) 1 c sour cream (I use Daisy light) 2 c shredded cheddar cheese ( I use 3 c or 12 oz, sharp, light if I can find it) 4 tblsp butter (I use 2 tblsp) 1/4 chopped onion 1/3 c parmesan cheese salt to taste
Fork squash as best you can. Microwave at 1 min intervals until softened enough to cut. Peel and cut into cubes, having removed seeds and pulp. Cook cubes in boiling water until soft enough to mash. Drain well. Mash and mix with remaining ingredients. Bake at 350 in a shallow pan for 25 min or until brown and bubbly.
I had never before ate butternut squash before I tried this. Now I make it regularly. Comfort food at it's best...no guilt!
Bronwyn...I'm curious what a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving meal is. Is that what you prepared? And the cooking class sounds fun. What are you making?

Connie, Whats the deal with peanut butter? Smuckers makes a Natural Peanut Butter that has nothing but peanuts and salt in it. It comes with a layer of oil on top. You stir it up and then put it in the fridge. It dosn't separate after that. It has a lot of fat in it,16 grams per 2 TBS but you don't need to use nearly that much at a time. The calories are high 210 per TBS (all nuts are) but the protein is very good at 8 g. The sat fat is low and the Trans fat is 0. Let me know your thoughts on this product. I find it at the local grocery store. | Connie
| posted 15-Oct-2008 11:57am
Smuckers should be easy to find. I will look for it when I go to the store. I'm really not a big peanut butter person, but it is an option and I'm all for filling my house up with those. I remember my mom's nutritionist telling her to eat a little bit of peanut butter before she goes to bed to help with her sugar levels. Maybe once in awhile I could spread some on a rice cake.
Good news, Rachael Ray's stock does not have sugar in it. And only food ingredients. Now that I have some bases for soup, I'm good to go. | Debbie M.
| posted 15-Oct-2008 1:21pm
I was just looking at my pre made beef stock Kitchen Basics Brand. It has honey listed right after slat. I wonder how much is in it. There is no listing for sugar grams. It does say 1 carb per cup. Thats pretty low isn't it? Do you think I should not use it? Its 20 calories per cup. Seems reasonable to me. | Connie
| posted 15-Oct-2008 2:23pm
I would go ahead and use it up, then switch to a sugar free brand. I always spend a lot of time on the soup aisle trying to find sugar free soup. I have settled for a low sugar (I hope!) tomato just to have on hand for once in awhile. But I really think sugars are harder on us than flours, in minimal amounts of course. | Debbie M.

There is a first time for everything is you give it a try. | Connie
| posted 16-Oct-2008 9:13am
Do try it Hilda. I had never eaten it either and it is so good in this recipe. And remember the "red" veggies are very good for you. The ultimate test was my children ate it. And my super picky niece. It makes a substantial yummy side dish that leaves enough for leftovers. A definite plus since lunches for me are generally leftovers. That was the very first thing I noticed on this plan, all the new foods I was trying and liking. I remember using a whole bulb of garlic in the first week.
Hilda, after you fork the squash and microwave till tender enough to cut, cut the tips off of both ends. Then cut it in half. Then cut the halves lengthwise. That will make it easy for you to remove the pulp and seeds. Use a meal spoon and just scrape away at it until it is all removed. Very easy to do. Then you can cube and peel, or peel and cube. I cube, then peel. My cubes are about 1-1 1/2 in square.
Weighed in at 156 this morning. Up a lb. If my history repeats itself, I'll be back down tomorrow. I can see why most people only weigh once a week because of the fluctuations, but I think it's fun to chart daily.
Tons to do today, lot's of gray skies and rain, my favorite!
Everyone have a great day! | Bronwyn

Hi all. Connie a Canadian Thanksgiving dinner is exactly like an American one. I prefer to cook roasted chicken and my family prefers the taste of chicken to that of turkey (all except my husband but oh well I roasted 5 chickens in a really big roasting pan. I covered the bottom of the pan in lots of onion slices, orange slices, and tons of fresh rosemary, thyme and sage. I start the meat at 500 degrees for 30-40 minutes it seals in the juices of the meat. I then turn it down to 350 for the rest of the cooking time. The smell in the house is divine and the gravy is out of this world. I like stuffing made on top of the stove and not stuffed in the bird. I like a fruity, nutty stuffing......pecans, apples, celery, raisins and fresh herbs. Then we had the usual big pot of mashed garlic potatoes, a big tray of roasted veggies (mushrooms, zucchini, onions, red peppers, sweet potatoes, and asparagus. We had a red cabbage salad with feta. Then there were 3 desserts pumpkin flan, blackberry and chocolate torte served with whipped cream and more berries, chocolates. So that would be pretty standard Thanksgiving dinner. I was interested in your cornbread stuffing....I have never had that and my daughter-in-law in gluten intolerant so that may work for her. Our Thanksgiving isn't as close to Christmas as yours so we do this all over again at Christmas.
Squash is so delicious roasted in the oven instead of cooking in water. Just cut your Butternut or any other squash in half and put it cut side down on parchment paper and cook. Of course it is nice to rub some butter into the flesh and salt and pepper it before putting it cut side down to cook....but you don't even have to do that.......it is fabulous. | Connie
| posted 16-Oct-2008 7:41pm
OMG...that sounds so good! And it sounds like a whole lot of work. But worth it I'm sure.
My sister is gluten intolerant too. We make our cornbread dressing as follows;
One batch corn bread (omit sugar) One batch regular bisquick biscuits (my sister makes a batch of gluten free biscuits, maybe she even doubles it since most of her foods make less than regular baked things) chicken broth, and some of the juices from the bird Chopped cook egg (2 or 3) Cooked, chopped giblets 2 or 3 stalks celery, chopped 1/4 cup chopped onion Sage tiny, tiny bit of poultry seasoning
It is pretty basic. But, yum with gravy. All this talking of holiday cooking is making me hungry! I used to do the meal for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but now I want to spend Christmas day out of the kitchen, so I do something easier. Usually prime rib. Good to hear from you again. | Bronwyn

Wow Debbie!!!! Life is good indeed! It is so great when all our efforts pay off. And the happy dance is a great idea, burns some more calories. Ha ha! So, can you notice a 12 lb difference? Are you always feeling satisfied with the foods you eat? Have other people commented? Do ever have any desire to cheat?
I didn't weigh in this morning. I hit the ground running this morning because last night I was laying in bed reading surrounded by pets, when I saw a flea. Plus, last night my son cooked one of our very favorite meals called "tenderloin lascola." So good! The basic sauce is alfredo, but with lot's of other things thrown in, in particular gorgonzola cheese. Really full of fat. But, I did try to minimize the damage by eating it over rice and in a smaller quantity than I would have before. I just couldn't pass it up. Plus, have you ever noticed when we don't eat what our kids make they take it personally, but they can turn up their noses at our meals? I'm eating light today in hopes tomorrow morning I will at least not have gained.
Beautiful weather here. We are supposed to get down in the 40's at night. I am so ready. Yesterday I was driving down the road with the air on even though it was 56 outside. I couldn't even feel the cooler weather.. I don't have hot flashes, I'm just always too warm feeling. Oh well.

YES PLEASE! Post the recipe. I love hearing what others enjoy. Thanks for the encouragement. I do feel satisfied with the food I eat. I love my diet. I just commmented to my husband that everyone should base their diet on their favorite thing. Mine is Popcorn. I eat it several times a week at night. We make it the old fashion way in a pot with canola oil then we sprinkle Reeses Cheesoning over it. I eat it until I don't want any more. And that is a lot. Probably 6 cups or more!! I know, that is a lot but I love it. I feel so satisfitd when I have it. I have been losing 2 pounds a week. If I would lose faster without the popcorn It would not be wroth it to me because I get so much out of sitting by the TV and munching my corn. No one has really noticed my weight loss yet as I have much more to lose but I can see a difference in my clothes and under things. The next 12 will be a bigger difference. You would not believe what I have resisted today and it wasn't hard to do. I took my kids to an Old Fashioned Soda Shop today. They got hand scooped waffle cones. They looked beautiful but I didn't want it. I have turned down, brownies and M&M's and all kinds of junk. But its OK. I lmnow I will not have ANY Halloween Candy. Every year I steal candy from my kids's bags. ITs like I can't hget enought. Not this year. I won't have one single piece!
I know the things I can have. I have substitutions that I really like. Potato Chips = Corn Chips and Corn tortillas (somwtimes we fry the tortilla in canola oil and eat them with salsa and low fat sour cream.) YUM Crackers = Triscuts Cereal = Kashi or Uncle Sam or Ezechial Cerial All Dairy = low fat dairy~love cheese Anything canned = canned without sugar variety Bread = Ezechial bread rice = brown rice Lots of veggies No juice and very little fruit at this point I drink Alchohol when ever I want it. I don't ever consider it at all. (maybe 4 to 5 drinks a week)
It seems I have a substitution for just about everything. I made a meat loaf yesterday. I used no sugar catsup and Kashi 7 whole grain cereal instead of bread crumbs. My family didn't even notice. I can't wait until I get below the 190's I am so happy!!!!! Make good chioces everyone.
Have a great week end!

The cereal is called Ezekiel 4:9. There are several varieties, I am eating the Cinnamon Raisin. This company also makes a few bread varieties. I can only get it in the freezer section at my supermarket. I keep it in my freezer too and only take out one slice at a time. I toast it and put natural peanutbutter and sugar free strawberry jam on it. Its a heavy chewy bread. I hear from others on this board that they make English muffins too but I haven't had those yet. Tey sound good. I just love the bread. As for the ketchup, its Heinz One Carb Reduced Sugar. I thought it was sugar free until I looked this morning. It has sucralose, 1 gram of sugar vs's 5 grams with regular ketchup. I suppose technically its off limits. As for my meat loaf recipe I don't have one. lol I make it different everytime I make it. I just throw in this and that until its a mess. I form it into a loaf, zig zag the ketchup on top and bake it. Start with groud sirloin. Add the following: egg, onion, garlic powder, worchestershire, salt, pepper, Kashi 7 whole grain cereal soaked in milk, peckerino grated cheese (you could use parmesan), a squirt of the low carb ketchup, could be other things. Just put in the flavors you like. Mix it up (I use my hands) and bake at 350 until done thru, about an hour. I was 193 again this morning!! yey me! | Connie

Debbie, it is so wonderful to read how happy you are. It is contagious! I too am not worried one little bit about Halloween. In fact, I'm baking some cookies today and I just could care less about them. My husband came home yesterday with a praline and I gave it away. Before NFNS I would have inhaled it.
Here is the white chili recipe, it is from the food network, Ellie Krieger;
1 tblsp olive oil 1 med onion diced (about 1 1/2 cups) (may divide half for cooking, other half for topping) 2 stalks celery diced (about 1/2 cup) 3 med poblano peppers (4 oz each) seeded and white ribs removed, finely diced ( about 1 1/2 cups) 1 clove garlic minced 1 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, more to taste 1 lb ground white turkey (I have used cooked chicken as well) 2 (15.5 oz)cans white beans such as cannelini, preferably low sodium, drained and rinsed 4 cups low sodium chicken broth 3/4 tsp dried oregano 1 (15 .5 oz) can hominy, drained and rinsed Salt to taste
NFNS corn chips light sour cream or low fat cottage cheese
Heat oil in large pot or dutch oven over moderate heat. Add the onion (I would add half, reserving remaining for topping), celery and poblanos, and cook stirring occasionally until veggies are soft, about 8 min. Add garlic, cumin, coriander and cayenne and cook, stirring until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
Add the ground turkey (or chicken) and cook, breaking up meat until cooked through. Add the white beans, broth and oregano. Cook, partially covered, stirring occasionally, for 25 min.
Add the hominy and salt and more cayenne pepper, to taste, and continue cooking, partially covered, 10 min longer.
Serve over nfns chips, top with light sour cream or cottage cheese and some of remaining chopped onion.
I think if you can't find poblano peppers you can substitute green bell peppers. I'm going to make some tomorrow. And enjoy it for several days.
I weighed in at 157 this morning. I really have stayed here for awhile. No problem. Today I will eat lightly and enjoy the cool weather. Last night we turned on the gas fireplace, it is ventless and heats up the whole living room. Ahhhh, I do love fall.
Later, and everyone have a great day.

For the meatloaf, maybe you could top with tomato sauce with some Splenda stirred into it. I always top with tomato sauce. That reminds me off a sloppy joe recipe my mom used to make. Cook ground beef till done, drain well. We used to add ketchup until meat is coated well, but we could use tomato sauce with splenda. When you have added enough tomato sauce/splenda to achieve the right consistency, add a small amount of mustard, maybe 8 drops. Stir and serve over lightly browned bread. Growing up, we loved it as kids. | Bronwyn

Here is another chili recipe that is so easy and yummy:
2 tsp. olive oil 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, but into cubes 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup diced celery 2 tsp. minced garlic 1Tbsp. chili powder 2 tsp. ground cumin 2 tsp. oregano 1/2 tsp. ground coriander 1/4 cup flour **stir a 2-3 Tablespoons cornstarch into the broth 3 cups chicken broth 1 can evaporated milk 1 small can black beans, 1 can small kidney beans, 1 small can navy beans......drained and rinsed 1 can chopped green chilies 1/2 tsp. each salt and pepper 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 cup light sour cream 2 TBSP. minced fresh cilantro chopped green onion
Heat oil in large pot over medium heat. Add chicken and cook until no longer pink. Stir so it doesn't get crusty. Add onions, celery, and garlic and stir for 5 minutes. Add chili powder, cumin, oregano, and coriander. Mix for 1 minute. Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons of cornstarch into small amount of broth to dissolve and then combine all the broth and milk and add to chili. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered for 5 minutes.
Add beans, chilies, salt and pepper and cayenne. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in sour cream and fresh cilantro. Ladle into bowls and top with a little grated low fat cheese and sliced green onions......I also like to top with a little more cilantro and eat with some corn chips. | Debbie M.

Morning all. 156 this morning. Husband left for Toronto yesterday, your neck of the woods Bronwyn, so not much cooking going on here. Bad way to spend the day, snacking. Probably too much cheese involved, but it seemed to fit the weather, white cheese dip and chips, so today I really need to eat some veggies. Or maybe I'll get motivated enough to get to store and make some chili.
Everyone have a great day.

Just got throught my daughters 13th birthday party. There was all kinds of treats. We made a giant cookie cake with frosting. I didn't even want it. I made sure there were things there I could have. While they had that I had a no sugar added fudge bar. 40 guiltless calories! There was a big pot of chili and garlic bread. Spinach dip made with ff sour cream with Hawian and pumpernickle bread, a cheese ball with Triscut crackers. Black and green olives, dill pickles, a veggie tray with ff ranch dip, chips and black bean and corn salsa. We had a bond fire out back which was just right as the weather was low 60's and chilly. Rachel open presents out on the lawn near the fire on a blanket. We sipped wine and had a wonderful afternoon. Tomorrow I will ride my bike and a few chores. Not much planned. When Rachel gets home we head to the mall. She wants to check the other colors of the hoody we got her at Hollister. I can't believe I have two teens now. Sleep well everyone. By the way. I hadn't seen my Mom in several weeks and she noticed my weight loss!! She said it looked like I lost a lot more than 12 pounds. YEY ME! What could be better for motivation than that? | Bronwyn

Connie, Toronto is totally not my neck of the woods (It is like 2000 or 2500 miles east of me),,,,,,far from it but the same country for sure!!!
Debbie M. I am really excited about your weight loss as you started out at where I am at presently. You know 12 lbs. does make you feel so much better even, if you still feel like you want to lose lots more. I truly wish I was already there with you. Last winter I was where you are now and it made a difference....in the way i felt and in the clothes I could wear.
I eat so much better when I cook actual meals instead of "snack" meals. I think with the snack meals I am always way short on vegetables. With a real meal I always cook lots of vegetables and have a salad as well. Point in case tonight I made pork tenderloin, steamed broccoli with a roasted red pepper sauce, chopped veggies (with also feta and kalamata olives) and a ranch dressing. The family also had garlic mashed potatoes but I choose to have lots of the chopped veggie salad instead. I don't know if you ever do a chopped veggie salad......but I love them and so does my family. I dice avocado, tomato, cucumber, red pepper, red onion, mushrooms (sometimes chopped broccoli and cauliflower) and add diced feta and chopped Kalamata olives and top with ranch......so yummy!!!! Of course fresh herbs like basil are great in it as well.
Did Hilda make it down to the next size for her new pair of pants?
I guess Greg is no longer here, eh???

Good morning all! 156 this morning.
I'm happy about that, but I have been a complete slug for 2 whole days and I have been eating terribly. Everything has been NFNS, but mostly cheese and chips, cheese and rice cakes etc. Jerry was gone all last week and over the weekend too. So instead of cooking healthy meals, I've just been snacking with cheese. Not good when I did it on Sat, and even worse on Sun. What is it about not having to cook for anyone so I just eat badly? Yesterday I read all day. My pets were all staring at me while I lay on the couch, the bed, wherever! Just not like me. Maybe it was the cooler weather. I never even made it to the store.
So, new plan for today. I am going to the store. I am going to buy veggies and lean protein. I am going to plan a menu and try and cook. Bronwyn, I really want your roasted red pepper sauce recipe. The chopped veggie salad sounds really good too. So, all the veggies in it are raw and crunchy? I would like to try that as well. Thanks for the ideas. Doesn't sound like you and Jerry are going to run onto each other this week. Ha Ha! Canada is huge! I had to dig out his long sleeved casual clothes. I really need to switch his summer/winter things. And I need to clean my closet. And all weekend I did nothing. I was supposed to color my hair too.
You know, it's starting to feel a bit cathartic, sharing all of that. Today is going to be productive! I'll start with menu and then hair before I venture out to the store. Getting rid of the grays should give me a boost!
Ok, I'm reading to hit the ground running. I'll be looking for those recipes from you Bronwyn.
Best to all today | Bronwyn

Connie do you cook on a gas stove? I cook om gas and this is how I roast my red pepper......wash the pepper and put it right on the fire of the burner. I use a tong to turn it around and i roast it until it is totally black...completely black. If you don't have gas you could do it under the broiler....a little more challenging to keep turning and so forth. Then you put the pepper in a plastic bag to sweat for 15 minutes (i throw it in a sandwich bag and zip it up). Then You take the pepper out of the bag and clean off the black you could try it under the water of the tap....a little bit messy but the pepper is fabulous. Then I throw the pepper in my cusinart and blend with a couple of big heaping tablespoons of light whipped cream cheese. I steam the broccoli and then rinse well and put on a plate and top with the red pepper sauce and salt and pepper the whole thing and voila delicious vegetable dish with very little fat.
Connie I so totally relate to days where you don't have that "get up and go" feeling. I plan to cook real meals to have meals for lunches as well as dinner so that I eat more vegetables and less cheese triscuts, chips and salsa and that kind of thing. Have you looked for the Corn Thins yet.....I think you would really like them. I think they work better than rice cakes for so many things..........I scrambled eggs and put them on the corn thins topped with chopped avocada, tomato, red onion and feta.....3 corn thins are 70 calories and there are different flavours such as sesame seed and so forth. Hey have Jerry get you some in Toronto. | Connie

Thanks for the recipe. I do not have a gas stove. I will try it under the broiler. It sounds so good. I wish I could make it tonight.
I finally made it to the store. Bought lots of veggies. I am going to roast them and have them on hand so I can have something to eat other than cheese. I really want to stay away from cheese for at least 3 days. I decided to pick up a size 12 jeans. They fit pretty good, just a little tight in the legs. But then I noticed they are somewhat of a slimmer jean. I think I'll take them back and try a 12 loose fit. So amazing, all the weight I've lost, and still in 14's. Do I need to exercise or what?
Managed to color my hair today as well as go to the store. And ran some errands. Feeling better about my list of things to do. I just can't produce results like I used too. The trade offs of aging.

Ok, I will be more grateful! Just yesterday I was reading an article by the trainer from The Biggest Loser and she said when we say things like I did about losing, but not enough, that is really putting ourselves down and defeatist. It never occurred to me when I said it, that was what I was doing. I guess all complaining is like that. Hmmm. I'm going to try and watch that.
The last pair of jeans I bought before NFNS were from Lane Bryant and they were 14's. And, I couldn't get them on anymore. When I bought them, I tried on a couple of tops. I was trying on size small, and they were way too big. So that makes me a fat bottom girl. I mean that in the nicest possible way! I think I'll hang on to those jeans for awhile.
Stayed on track all day. Made my veggies. I have enough for a couple of days. I feel better just knowing they are there waiting for me. Being lazy in the kitchen has bad repercussions.

156 this morning. I feel very good about my food yesterday. I am going to feel very good about my food today. I am finally going to make the white chili. I am going to garnish with a small bit of cottage cheese alone, rather than sour cream and shredded jack. And I am going to tackle closets also. Yes, I am aware of the theory. It applies to my neighbor, she's 300 lb, about 5'4, and she has only a path leading through her house. It is beyond the beyonds! She started seeing a counselor. My closets are small and there are very few in my house. Twice a year I have to reorganize them. Not a problem, I just have to be in the right mood because it involves hauling things up and down the stairs. At least I will be getting some exercise. | Bronwyn

That is such an interesting thing about clutter. I also once had a neighbor that would have weighed in at about 300 lbs....both the husband and the wife. They had a very large house that you could not even move around in. They walked through aisles of clutter....much of it boxed. Once my kids ball went into their yard and I ran over to get it and when I bent down to pick it up I could see into their basement window (I believe it was a walk out) and the basement was just like the upstairs.........stacks on stacks of boxes. They never actually invited us into their home but we had been at their front door a few times and with the door open you could see through the house and the entire place was just paths through stacked boxes. None of us of course have that degree of clutter as that is really over the top but everyone probably finds some build up of clutter in spots here and there....papers that need to be taken care of and so forth. I find that clutter makes me feel overwhelmed and stressed. I have friends that when they are stressed they can't eat....and they are the ones that are already very thin. Stress has the opposite effect on me......it makes me feel like eating and eating and eating......I guess trying to fill up a hole of some sort. | Connie

I wish my neighbor could box hers up, she can't even get that far. She bought an A-liner and filled it too. Then she bought a huge tent and put it in her back yard and filled it up. I try to help her clean up a bit. Once I spent 3 days with her clearing out her living room. I filled 12 garbage bags full of garbage. It's now worse than ever. I feel bad for her, when people come over she won't let them in. But she has lots of health problems and bad knees and depression. She eats out 3 times a day, everyday. I tried to talk to her about her diet once and she told me she didn't appreciate my being the food police. She has woke me up in the middle of the night 3 times, once ending in the emergency room. So, what are ya going to do? Despite everything, she is a neat lady. She just has a problem.
Making great strides in the crammed closet! It contains my clothes, house linens, sewing equipment and some other things. I've decided next spring to have a yard sale...some of these things need to go. Or, Goodwill.
Enjoying my roasted veggies. They have cinnamon on them, different, but good. | Hilda

If I would flollow her advise, I might be able to make some proigress on my basement! It would be a nice space down there if It was decluttered and organized, decorated and had better lighting. Its only 30 minute from our house so we can always come home if we freeze. I hope to plan well for my diet as the kids usually eat a lot of things I cannot have. Thanks Connie, I needed that encouragement today. I had a couple eggs this morning. Then later this morning I had a bowl of cereal. Half way through it I got a very strange taste in my mouth and had to spit it out. I couldn't eat any more of it. What was that all about? I'm hungry, we don't have anything to eat. I need to go shopping. I am having old ravenous hunger feelings right now. I want all the bad stuff. Good thing the cupboards are bare. lol I really feel like I want to get in the car and run to a fast food joint and just eat all the stuff I used to. What is my problem? Maybe I am losing weigh right now. Maybe its PMS!! Chocolate does sound really good. I'm a mess. A beer sounds good too but I think only because I want to change my mind. Don't worry, I won't. The kids have a half day of school today and parent teachers meeting this afternoon. With the 4 of them coming home soon the whole neighborhood will be here too. HELP! I don't think I can go camping. I may just cancel the whole thing and tell my kids they can't come out of their rooms until they are clean! HA! Maybe I should take a short nap, I think I am going to explode. At times like this I just need to calm down. I don't want to lose it before the meetings. I could just run screaming......... I think I just have too much on my plate for the next 3 days. I have to remember to take one thing at a time. okay, breathe.... I'm ok. | Connie
| posted 23-Oct-2008 12:31pm
Ok, deep breath! When I would send my kids to their room to clean, they were the ones that ended up with a nap! The darlings. It has been a long time since I have had cravings, but my first thought is you are not getting enough water. Remember, there are people who believe that artificial sweeteners can lead to sugar cravings too. That's why I stay away from it most of the time. Water, water, water! It can fill you up. Try to eat something with fiber in it with your water. Maybe an apple or half a banana. When I'm hungry and it's not time to eat, I drink water, more than just a glass, and munch on a few cashews. Or, if you need something with flavor, something with salsa on it might do the trick.
I just had an entire weekend without groceries. It was a disaster. Get yourself to the store. That one errand alone will make you feel on top of your world again. Be strong. Do not give in to your cravings. It will only lead to a million more cravings you will have to deal with. Not worth it. Make your new plan for the weekend, take it easy maybe.

It took us an hour. I really needed the exercise as well as stress reduction. I didn't have time to get groceries yet and I had to feed the kids lunch so we went through the Mc Donald's drive thru. I didn't have anything!! I do have chops ready to cook for supper. I'll have to shop tonight. Thanks for listening to my crazy ranting today. Good for you Debbie M. and Connie.....you are both troopers....you keep at it.
I really feel that I need to move on to doing something more or different than just NFNS. It is hard to turn things around and have success with a program that you have somehow become mired in being static. I continuously go up a lb. and down a lb. (sometimes even down 2 or 3 but then again up 2 or 3). I love the concept and think that it will definitely be what I look at more maintenance but at this point I can no longer get serious about it being what I can and will commit to for weight loss.
I have enjoyed getting to know all of you and hope you have continued success,,,,,,I really think you will. Anyways I am contributing very little to the NFNS process and need to shift gears. I will check in occasionally to see how you all are. | Connie

aahhhhh Connie how sweet. I feel like you and I have become good friends, but you my friend have become thin and I have become very discouraged and remain very heavy. It seems like I have hit the wall.....I am not committing like I need to because I have lost my faith in being able to be successful. Once you cave in too many times on any one program it seems like you are doomed. It is too easy to continually eat out of program just one more time. Old habits are very easy to fall back into. I haven't figured out what my next step is yet but I need to get that figured out and move on. My serious weight problems truly started and blossomed with my first diet.........it caused within me an obsession with food and weight. The first diet I went on was W.W. many years ago and at that time I was well within the normal range of weight, in fact I only needed to lose 3 maybe 5 lbs. to be below my recommended weight. It has been a steep climb since then with being heavier each and and every time I start a new diet. It just doesn't seem sometimes like there is a door back to normal.
Connie you found the door, you opened it and you just kept right on going. I want to get there. | Connie

I'm not exactly thin yet. In fact, I'm still wearing 14's. The 12's I bought have now become a goal for the future.
The only thing I can say that has really worked for me is the not cheating part. And I have been able to stick to this plan because I think giving up sugar and flour has been easy. It leaves me with lot's of other choices to eat.
So now I'm wondering what it is in this plan that leaves you with the desire to cheat. I know when I have ate inappropriately, I have been bombarded with more cravings. So, I guess I wonder what makes you cheat the first time? Maybe if we could figure that part out, the plan would work. And I know it's all about portion size and drinking water too. And time! It has worked so well for me, I want it to work for everyone. My mom has had to go off it for awhile. Her blood sugar became too low too often. So, for her to continue, she'll have to go through trying to adjust her meds with her doctor and she just isn't up to it right now. She's having knee surgery on the 5th, so maybe after that.
Mom is committed to following the principles of NFNS as much as possible. Maybe you could do that too. Maybe it could be your "rule of thumb," and then when you get ready to really go for it, you can.
And is it really fair to give up when you just went through a major food holiday? Maybe after Christmas would be a better time to try. I just don't want to see you throw in the towel completely. I once joined WW a week before Thanksgiving. People kept saying I was crazy. I didn't get it until 3 weeks had gone by. I never lost weight, Duh! And I hated the meetings, the weigh ins. But I did come away with a nice kitchen scale that I still use today, that was nice.
Personally, I think you have more thinking to do. Who was it that said we only do things because there's something in for us. There is something in it for you when you cheat. Please think about that, ok? Love you girl. | Debbie M.

Oh sorry I know I am again seeming like the diet drama queen and I most certainly don't mean to. I am not trying to seek attention to myself.....I am just on an emotional roller coaster that is partly set off by weight and failure but as you both know there are always other and sundry things that can create stress and anxiety in our lives and at the moment I seem to have several.
You know I keep coming to the realization that I am obsessed with food....mostly good food but too much food. When I give up though I do return to chocolate and not eat the good food. Overall I have very thin friends who you may think are just naturally thin but when I honestly observe them (outside of social situations,,,,where people may not be as careful) they are extremely careful and they are just as obsessed with being and staying thin as I am discouraged about not being thin. This is a weight obsessed world and I just wish I was on the end of obsessing about staying thin instead of trying to get thin again. My advise to any young girl would be to be very conscious about their weight and to never let their weight get in their way of happiness......and putting on a lot of weight does get in your way of happiness whether you say you care or not. I even didn't like my friends this week and resented them and didn't want to hear about their hour run or their skinny little lives.
I think Dr. Gott is right on the money with the no sugar.....I am not as sure about the no flour when it is whole wheat or whole grain but maybe he is right about that as well. I know one of the things that has really had an affect on me is that I am really stuck at home a lot because of the care of my Mother, I had thought she was going to be going to my brothers home for a couple of months (she has been here 4 1/2 years) and last week those plans changed and he can't take her. I just didn't deal well with the change of pans....It isn't that I don't ever get out but it is all a lot of work and complicated and as a result I feel I am becoming a hermit Maybe I am just feeling sorry for myself but I didn't see much happening on the diet and I emotionally took a noses dive and just felt like what is the use. There are other stresses and there always will be,,,,,it isn't like there is a perfect time to diet because there just never is and honestly you can deal with things better when you are eating well. I am just tired of the failure cycle. I will feel better by not eating sugar and that is what I plan to do I am just not sure what I exactly am doing....that is all. | Connie

First, no one thinks your a drama diet queen. You are at a place we all have been before. I have been there several times. I just didn't have a place to voice it like we have here.
There is nothing wrong with liking good food. In fact, I bought some red peppers yesterday so I could try the sauce tonight. Stay posted for that, I may have some questions!
I have been a hermit. Had a hysterectomy, went about 9 months without HRT and wigged out. I didn't leave my house for months and I cried all the time and was a nervous wreck all the time. My husband wanted to admit me to the mental hospital. Then my mom came and said I need hormones. My point is it was a very bad time and it changed me. No doubt your situation is changing you. Maybe just a small bit. But just enough to create a cloud over you and color all of your experiences. I can understand that. No matter how noble your endeavor, your life is not your own. How can you take control of your diet, a very huge thing, when you can't take control of your daily life. And, I know it's not like you are chained to a life of slavery. I get that. If you thought your mom would be getting care with you than your brother, would you feel ok about her being there. I doubt it. You may go along with it, but you would probably feel no peace.
So, it is what it is. Time for all of us to help you feel better and support you and lift you up. That may be all we can do, but we really want to do it. So hang in there. Let us in. Trying to dismiss your situation is counterproductive and harmful. | Bronwyn

Connie I do have a cloud over me and my experiences are more overwhelming than they should be....I am dwelling on little things, way too much. Something between my friends this week (way too lengthy to explain) really drove me over the edge....I felt marginalized and to keep it short my feelings were hurt for on behalf of my daughter-in-law who I didn't feel received the attention at a baby shower that I had previously lavished on their daughters. It was kind of like yeah all you skinny women can trash the fat lady. They would have no idea I feel this way and I won't be able to share it....... Plus the bulk of the evening was spent with them talking about their hour runs, and hours of exercise and I really couldn't eat that even though I am tipping the scales at 100 lbs.
How did you know I had struggled with my Mum going to my brothers. For a number of reasons it didn't seem the best idea but then I had adjusted to the idea and I actually started to look fore ward to it. When he called last Sunday and said it wasn't going to work I felt so disappointed and discouraged. My Mum is fully dependent for all of her needs and it isn't like we can carry on a conversation or anything like that. Strokes can do such horrible damage to people's brains. She is on a waiting list for long term care. I never expected my Mum to have to live this long with so little quality to her life and I have tried to keep her here and not put her in long term care but the time has arrived I believe to do that. The waiting lists here can be very long so we have no idea when her spot will actually come up.
Listen I do feel better to just "dump" some of my feelings. For today I am not eating any chocolate.

Hello, all! I just fell into this site when I was looking for inspiring recipes for this diet. My cousin and his son swear by it and I started about a week ago, with no effect as yet. I started reading from when you joined the board, Bronwyn. I skipped down from April, because I couldn't wait to hear how things were going with you. If you are down to a 14, you have done amazingly well, and this is an amazing encouragement to me. I also was on Berstein's diet, only to regain it all and more, and I am very inspired by your stick-to-itiveness in spite of difficulties. You have obviously inspired a lot of others as well. I hear what Connie has said to you, and she speaks from the heart. Listen to her, and allow me to get to know you as well. You aren't alone!
I am 5'7" and 230 lb. I know that I carry a lot of weight, but I still think that my scales lie. My husband worries about my health and wants me to lose weight, so here I am. I was suprised to hear that maple syrup is not allowed on the diet...my cousin says that his son practically drinks the stuff, and he has been losing weight steadily. I made egg custard the other day using maple syrup instead of sugar, and it was great. Bummer, huh?
I have added this website to my favourites list, and hope that I can look forward to some great support in the future. I'll probably need it. Ta for now!

How did I know you struggled with your Mum...? Must be because you are an obvious caregiver. That part of you reads loud and clear to all of us. Very interesting, your friend situation. I have, or should say had, the same problem. Someone who I considered my best friend totally ignored my daughters graduation AFTER I had gone way above and beyond for both of hers. I was really hurt by it. I distanced myself a lot and came to terms with the fact that she is just not aware of the universes give and take like I am. We continue our friendship, but for me it will never be the same. For her, well, I don't think to this day she is even aware of my feelings. She isn't "deep" enough. But she is a good wife, mother and all around person so I forgive her and have learned not to expect so much from her. I too am a giver, my family calls me the "peacemaker" because I can't stand for conflict. About 5 years ago I adopted the saying "so and so is a stinker." I say that and I try very hard to let things roll off my back. It takes practice. And it's a personal choice how you handle it. Whether or not you say anything to the friend, give it some time so you can approach her without strangling her!
I think your eating has very little to do with food. And I worry that now is not the time to go "whole hog" into dieting. I think you should set one goal and stick with that for awhile. Like giving up just sugar. That was a good idea. We are only human. Give yourself a break, a hug, a chance to be happy about something. We are stuck with big hearts, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Love to you.
Welcome Becca. Feels free to spill your guts at any time! Good luck with the program. Let us know how you are doing. | Bronwyn

Becca welcome.....there are really a lot of posts to read and you have mixed up someone else's success with my lack of success. I think you refer to Connie as the "lucky" size 14 one. Connie has done amazingly well...and she is now learning to be grateful for the size 14 that the rest of us long to be in The truth is it is easier to be dissatisfied than it is to be satisfied we really do have to work on being happy with our progress even if it is painstakingly slow. Just to summarize.....I did lose 10 lbs. and then I gained 10 lbs....actually today it is 12. It isn't the programs fault but it is my impatience and lack of perspective on the whole body/weight/diet/food issues. Had I been faithful to my commitment and rode out the stall in weight loss....or changed things up a little I would now be down in weight, I believe significantly as I first started in February. I felt so good when I was committed and truly wasn't bothered by cravings. So Becca my best advise would be to just keep on keeping on.....don't expect miracles and be happy with losing 2 - 4 lbs. per month (if it is more than fabulous). That is the thing about Bernstein that sucks you in and sucks your wallet dry is the fast weight loss. I lost 43 lbs. in 3 months....WOOHOO!!!!! That is so exciting to see such immediate and quick results. Unfortunately you can't live the rest of your life eating 500-800 calories or living with such major restrictions. I actually only got half way to my goal., although I am now reevaluating my goal. Do you live in Toronto, I know he is big there? Mind you he now has about 60 offices I beleive.....did I mention I did Bernstein twice??? I truly think my metabolism is totally messed up. My friend (my one heavy buddy) actually did Dr. Bernstein a few times and she kept gaining the weight and they banned her from the program.....talk about rigging your statistics, eh!!!!
Connie.....I know we are so much alike....of course you get it and know what I mean. I am seriously an emotional eater.....I stuff my feelings so you are right...but I think I have an enormous appetite as well. Connie in some ways you are in a stall with your weight (well definitely a slow down which you were prepared for) at the moment so see here you are still sticking with it.....that is what has to happen.
I love that this isn't a program that you feel like you need to wait until Monday to start again.....it is seriously a pick up where you left off program | Bronwyn

I am definitely not moving down in my weight right now! Maybe I will have to exercise to get any more off, but I can live with that. I know I have mentioned before about the lady that stayed at the same weight for a year and then began losing again. Hey, that could be me! Not a problem. I just baked some cookies for the kids and my daughter was stunned that I would make them and not eat them. But I am about to enjoy a NFNS meal. I couldn't get around to the red pepper sauce tonight...no time. But maybe tomorrow. | RaeRae

Welcome, RaeRae, and best of luck. I am a newbie as well.
Thank you Bronwyn, for clarifying the situation for me. It's obviously not ideal to jump 6 months ahead and assume you understand what is going on. I went out and bought some Ezekial bread last night...the cinnamon raisin variety...pretty pricey, but I guess I won't be eating a lot of it anyway. It's hard to believe, looking at it, that it doesn't have any flour in it. I mean, it's not all densely packed sprouts and all. Anyway, feel free to send any other recommendations for supplies our way. I'm sure that RaeRae and I will both be grateful for it.

Welcome RaeRae. Your in a great place here. I don't know if you or Becca have the book yet, but that is how most of us started. It gives you all the info you need as well as helping get your mind set where it should be.
Bronwyn, I made the red pepper sauce. Very good. It seems like I've been in the kitchen for two days! But we have been eating great stuff. Still, I am exhausted tonight.
So much going on this weekend, I haven't weighed. Surprisingly, it's been kind of nice not doing it. But tomorrow I'll do it. I am ready for everyone to go back to work and school.
I'm in a small town called Millington, 9 miles from Memphis, TN.
Have a nice night everyone.

Lady Di, I looked at the packaging and it lists no sugars on the ingredient list. The nutrition list lists the presence of sugars, but it is likely due to the raisins, and not something to be concerned with. Thanks for the heads-up, though. | Becca

Morning all. 156 this morning. I though it might be more after eating all weekend. The good news is, on this plan, if you stay NFNS, you can overeat and not really gain.
I woke up this morning after having dreamed of my late father in law. He was a wonderful man that I adored. Anyway, there was much love in the dream and now I am sure to be a sop all day. But it is a good feeling. It always seems like a treat, dreaming about lost loved ones.

Good for you Connie. I would just put a little caution out there about being able to eat lots of NFNS foods and not gain. I am not sure. I know that to lose weight whether it be NFNS or not that calories do count. The cravings are definitely less intense when you cut out the flour and I think especially the sugar. Well I got right back on board Saturday and I have done really well. You all really encouraged me. I had no idea where to go from there but I just felt so defeated that I didn't think there was any use of continuing. I am sticking more with the book this time.
Becca how long did you go to Bernstein and how much weight did you lose? Do you feel like it is harder to lose weight since going there? Because you are Canadian you probably would be able to find the Corn Thins I have talked about. You can get them at Safeways in the same place as the rice cakes. I think they are better than rice cakes. They are made by Best Foods and imported form Australia. There are so many things you can do with them. | Bronwyn

Okay I made a recipe out of Dr. Gott's book...really my first, it was the roasted chicken with olives, prunes and bacon. I don't know why I tried it first as it is a little weird. I kind of like weird though so I gave it a try. No one liked it at all.....it was such a flop. I hate meals where no one likes what you made.... What are your favorite recipes out of Dr. Gott's book.....I would like to make a winner the next time. I had kind of thought I would stick more to the book. Look at his breakfasts recipes, lunch and dinner and make those for a while.....not too sure now. I remember Connie saying the pumpkin dip wasn't anything to write home about. | Debbie M.

I think if we get off sugar and flour the depression will go away. I went to a seminar on depression once, and the main thing was to get off sugar. |
