Hilda, I think Wal-Mart only has one of those brands of yogurt. Have you been able to find one? I have to go to my other local grocery to find the other.

When I went to the Doc yesterday I weighed 8 pounds more than my scale at home. frown

Hi, Guys. Gosh, I just love reading your posts! It makes me feel as if I have a bunch of friends right here in the room. I have always loved tomatoes and cottage cheese. One of my favorites is cottage cheese on a saucer, a hollowed out green pepper with a mixture of grated cabbage, grated carrots, small onion and mayo inside of it. Sometimes I put pineapple in it. The recipies are really appreaciated. Also what do I do about milk? All of it I have seen so far has sugar in it.

For some reason the doctor's office scale is always 8 or 9 pounds heavier that mine at home. I just don't consider it. Just go by the figure at home. It will always be the same. I figure I couldn't have gained 8 pounds between my house and the doctor's office. Just doesn't make sense.

Morning all. A little night time eating last night...drat, darn and dagnabit! So 149.2 this morning. I'm taking Gma to the base today to get her meds and new stickers for her car. That should take several hours.

Debbie, the same thing happened to me with the scales at home and at doc's. My scales were ancient, so I bought a new one. But honestly, the doc's scales looked ancient too. So just stick to your numbers at home. It seems weird to hope your foot is broken, but that's what I'm hoping!

Sandy, the sugar in milk is natural, lactose, so it's ok. Are you reading the ingredients list? Don't look at the carb grams. This is not a low carb diet. Thank goodness!

K10, hang in there. It will all clear up just fine.

Sorry I misspelled your name, Bronwyn! Just realized it. I will try the roasted veggies with red pepper next time, but they were great without, too. I've never enjoyed vegetables as much as I am lately. Do you think our tastebuds change with this way of eating? Seems like it. Weather's also getting nice, which helps. It's so nice to be able to be outside working around the yard a bit. Hope to go for a long walk today, but said that yesterday, too, and never got to it. Work is crazy busy right now. On that note, better get back at it! Have a good day.

I am confused.....Connie and Debbie are hoping that Debbie's foot is broken????? Surely I misunderstood?

My scales are a lb. or 2 heavier than the Dr. or WW so that is great.....prefer that.

I feel like I need to switch things up a bit.....I am in a stall and it is easy for me to get quickly discouraged. So many things I have read suggest that reducing calories just slows down your metabolism and then you really have to fight for every lb.

My word K10....get better already smile

No Bronwyn, You didnt misunderstand. The thing is, if my foot isnt broken it might be something worse. So I want it to be broken. It would just be a little stress fracture anyway. You know, from being too FAT! When I had little kids I had a stress fracture from pushing a double stroller while wearing sandles.

The very bad thing this lump could be is bone cancer but my Doc said he wasnt really worried about that because bone cancer usually starts in the long bones, not in the small bones of the foot. So that being said, bring on the stress fracture!

Milk is ok. Go for a lower fat version. I drink 1%. I also use half and half in my coffee. NFNS is such a departure from other diets. It is not a low carb diet, but it eliminates flour and sugar. It advocates low fat versions, but not at the expense of added chemicals. The more basic the food, the better, as long as it is NFNS. Read every label. Familiarize your self with all the names sugar uses. All flour is out, even whole wheat or whole grain.

Morning all. 147.4 this morning. Yesterday I ate out with Gma at an all you can eat buffet. I had a big salad, a small serving of meatloaf some mashed potatoes and lima beans. It was very good and filling and on the plan. We ate around 3 pm so dinner was a small amount of potato chips. I wasn't really hungry. She had some dessert and kept trying to talk me into having some. She's diabetic and refuses to give up sugar. In her mind, she thinks she really isn't diabetic (she says they made a mistake on her test) and as long as she eats her sugary foods only at night, it's ok. There's no explaining it to her, and really, she's 87 so I guess she is entitled to have it her way.

Last night's dinner was a warm salad of bacon (just a bit for flavor, fried crisp first), sauteed red onion, yellow pepper, carrot, chickpeas and fresh spinach with a little olive oil and cider vinegar dressing. Pretty, easy, yummy and filling. Gave in to TOM cravings and had Blue Bunny fat-free, nsa vanilla with a little peanut butter and sf chocolate sauce for dessert -- first dessert in almost two months. Did get out for my long walk after that, so felt better after that.

My mom's the same way, Connie. Has had lots of heart and other health issues but just won't make changes -- says she's too old to start now (she's 72). It's frustrating, but you can't do it for them.

Morning all.

Yesterday I had prunes and 2% plain yogurt for breakfast. Lunch was a little black bean soup with spinach and soy cheese, with hummus on ezekial on the side. Dinner: I was in the mood for nachos so I heated up the bean dip and put soy cheese in it, fresh salsa, and a bite each of avocado and steak, and a small salad on the side. Then I had two dates and a few peanuts. Unfortunately I fell off at night and had a little granola which had maple syrup in it. It is extremely hard for me to stay NS at night when I have PMS. Extremely.

Hopefully that won't happen tonight. Why don't I just decide that it will not happen, right here? I think part of the night cravings is not eating enough food earlier in the day, so I've been making my lunches bigger to see if that helps.

This morning I had blackberries and plain 2% yogurt with half a packet of stevia.

Good for you, Debbie. On the planning ahead and the breakfast.

Hilda, since you asked smile-
yesterday lunch was the same black bean soup, spinach, and hummus on ezekial.
Dinner was a white bean and chicken chili. The best part was the side of
squash with onions and garlic, which had been roasted at 450 for about 45 minutes and
dressed in olive oil. Small salad with avocado and tomato on the side.

I usually make the roasted veggies with: zucchini, red and yellow peppers,
sweet potato, and sometimes broccolini. I'm a little obsessed with it. Maybe
the best part is how the vegetables, especially the onion, begin to carmelize and
get very sweet!

Bronwyn and someone else, what's this about soy and thyroid function?

Oh, I forgot to mention. For any of you chemistry nuts,
or anyone interested in avoiding age-related diseases by taking antioxidants
like resveratrol and quercetin (both of those I take now), I found an interesting
article about how taking these and other antioxidants mimics the life-extending
effects of so-called "Caloric restriction."

Caloric restriction has been proven to extend life in mice and monkeys,
there are articles online. Maybe more importantly, it forestalls age-related
and inflammatory disease processes like arthritis, diabetes and dementia.

The website does not have any "www" - it's just "a-sante.com."

I don't know if that makes sense, I'm just not wanting to get kicked out

Hi all. Last night's dinner: cup of tomato soup and a Greek chicken salad -- sliced grilled chicken breast, chopped romaine, red onion, toasted pine nuts, tomatoes, cucumbers and crumbled feta with lemon-oregano vinaigrette. Snacked on popcorn later -- still not breaking that habit, but am doing smaller portions each time. Breakfast today: 1 fried egg on Ezekiel seasame toast, low-soduim V8.

Sandi, I don't think there are other terms for flour as there are for sugar. My understanding is that if the ingredient listing doesn't specifically say "flour" it's okay. i.e., corn tortillas made with just ground corn are fine, but those that list corn flour aren't; shredded wheat and Triscuit crackers list just 100 wheat, no wheat flour, so they're ok, too. Just watch out for the "f" word on labels and you're good to go. And remember that it's not just wheat flour to avoid, but all flours (rye, oat, corn, wheat, rice, whatever).

When you guys say Ezekiel muffins, are you talking about English muffins? Or are there others?

This is just an exert from a well balanced article on concerns re: soy. The problem is there is so much soy already in all processed and packaged foods that adding even more should be avoided:

Soy and the Thyroid
Apart from the question as to whether soy even has demonstrable health benefits, there are long-standing concerns that soy may have negative effects on thyroid function and hormonal health. Soy falls into a category of foods known as goitrogens -- vegetables, grains and foods that promote formation of goiter -- an enlarged thyroid. Some goitrogens also have a definite antithyroid effect, and appear to be able to slow thyroid function, and in some cases, trigger thyroid disease. These concerns have been studied for years, but were raised specifically by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) researchers Daniel Doerge and Daniel Sheehan. Doerge and Sheehan were the FDA's key experts on soy. In 2000, Doerge and Sheehan wrote a controversial letter of protest (PDF) to their own employer, protesting the positive health claims for soy that the FDA was approving at the time. They wrote:

...there is abundant evidence that some of the isoflavones found in soy, including genistein and equol, a metabolize of daidzen, demonstrate toxicity in estrogen sensitive tissues and in the thyroid. This is true for a number of species, including humans. Additionally, isoflavones are inhibitors of the thyroid peroxidase which makes T3 and T4. Inhibition can be expected to generate thyroid abnormalities, including goiter and autoimmune thyroiditis. There exists a significant body of animal data that demonstrates goitrogenic and even carcinogenic effects of soy products. Moreover, there are significant reports of goitrogenic effects from soy consumption in human infants and adults.
Bronwyn
posted 18-Mar-2010 3:41pm

This same article talked about Christine Northrup and how she promoted the use of soy. Apparently she had also advised Oprah to incorporate large quantities of soy into her diet....both Northrup and Oprah now are dealing with thyroid issues.....coinicidence or not who knows!
Bronwyn

Sandi I really think thyroid is my problem with weight loss. I can only lose a little and then it stops. I know my thyroid is on the very low end of normal and not recognized in the regular health community as a problem. I am reading "Diet Cure" by Julia Ross. She has a lot of information on the thyroid and believes it is difficult to get help for thyroid issues from most Drs. She thinks there is much more extensive testing to do then what is normally done. Are you taking and meds for thyroid function?

It is NFNS and vegan, gluten free......using cashew milk.

I have had cottage cheese and pineapple, and I will have another bowl of "oprah's" favourite. Just taco's on Ezekial wraps for supper.

Debbie: I am so glad you have a "new" trailer. I was driving past trailers left and right today. It sure made me miss ours.

Did anyone notice my post from Wednesday? It looks like we will be moving back to where we moved from. Mixed emotions. I am glad my hubby was offered more money, but I really like it here. I do miss my friends though.

I am going to try the tomatoes and cottage cheese later.

K10, I did notice your post and I commented on it but when I looked for it I didn't see it. I do remember saying that you should be prepared for your husband's current employer to make a counter offer.

Morning gang. 148.2 this morning. I'm feeling very stingy about my weight loss. Very, very stingy. I want it back. I have been good on my eating and it shows in my weight. But I want more. The end of this week was busy, and although I stayed true, I relied on cheese more than I should have. I need to get back to dinners that include a lean protein, rice and fresh veggies. I can do this.

I went back to sleep twice this morning, so I'm feeling caught up on that. I have a hair appt. today. My hair has become way too long. Time for a good cut and some serious shaping. That alone will make me feel tons better. The sun is shinning and the temps today should be good. Tomorrow it is going to cool down so maybe something in the crock pot. I have a new crock pot recipe;

Crockpot Chicken Stroganoff

1 lb frozen, boneless, skinless chicken breast
1 can cream of mushroom soup (11 3/4 oz)
16 oz sour cream
1 envelope dry onion soup mix

Place frozen chicken in the bottom of crock pot.
Mix soup, sour cream, onion soup mix together and pour over chicken.
Cook on low 7-8 hours.

Serve over noodles or rice.

I tasted this and it is very good. I would serve it with rice. Yum! I think I will fix it tomorrow for dinner since we are going to have some cooler weather come in. I love that it starts with frozen chicken. So easy. Time to hit the floor running. Everyone made it in last night and my laundry room is overflowing.

One thing I had never eaten before this was Laughing Cow cheese. I like the Garlic and Herb flavor. On the Doctor's show this week, one of them said that eating white rice was like eating pure sugar. Eat brown rice only. I do not understand why they are still putting white rice in Lean Cuisine and other diet frozen dinners.

K10....you must feel very conflicted.....I know you also love the house you are in.

Congratulations on the trailer Debbie. Maybe you will be able to have another one with your move to a better paying job K10.

Connie everything I have ever read said it is very unsafe to cook frozen meat in a crock pot.....that the meat isn't at a safe temperature for too long while it defrosts. Glad you din't get sick.

Another bar that is sugar free and flour free is the fibre 35 vars....Fit Smart. They are bigger than the Lara Bars and I believe the same number of calories plus they have more fibre in them and protein. I like them better but dont' have them often.

Each FitSmart Bar is made with nutrient-rich fruits, nuts, seeds, whey protein and acacia fibre and contains no added sugars or trans fats. And the best part? It comes in three delicious flavors: Chocolate Chunk, Cranberry Apple and Lemon Poppy.

• 10 grams of fibre
• 10 grams of protein
• Natural ingredients
• No added refined sugars
• No soy, gluten or GMOs
• No trans fats
• Certified kosher

My favourite is the chocolate chunk but the poppy seed one tastes like fruit cake is quite good as well. It is more satisfying than a Lara bar IMHO.

Not a good start to the weekend diet-wise. Indian takeout last night and breakfast out with my son this a.m. Stayed NFNS and didn't overdo but am sure I blew it on calories.

Good luck with your decision, K10. Significantly more pay, better retirement and less stress sounds great in the long run, but any move is tough in the sort run. At least it'd be to a place you know, where you already have friends and where at least one child could settle back in quickly and happily.

I'm due for a veggie-only dinner tonight and vow to do that.

There really is some conflict. We really need to look at what the future holds for my husband so he doesn't have to work until he is 100. Oldest told me this morning that she really is going to miss it here, especially the friends she has made. I was glad to hear that.

You all sound like you are doing well with your eating, overall, anyway. I won't even go there right now. My bro-in-law left yesterday so it will be easier to eat better. He loves food and that his the way he shows he cares.

It has been nice and clear here. I do have to admit I don't like Spring because it means Summer is coming. To the newbies, I don't do heat, so Summer isn't enjoyed by me.

I'm with you on the summer thing K10, I barely survive it.

Hilda, I know what you mean by so called healthy foods being not so healthy. Our food system is so out of whack that we pass junk off for healthy. We have a long way to go as a country to get on the same page and going in the right direction foodwise. I'm always so glad to about school systems getting rid of pop machines. The other day I saw someone drinking a can of pop and I had "a moment" in my mind. It was like I was looking at someone smoking...who does that anymore? Ok, I know pop isn't as bad as cigarettes, but it evoked the same sense of wrongness in me.

Dana, don't cut yourself short! Staying NFNS (especially in the face of a menu) is huge! You did great. You can always cut down on calories tomorrow to compensate. Staying NFNS is really the main thing. Congrats!

Bronwyn, I have read both opinions on the frozen chicken in crock pot debate. I feel assured that this will be fine because the chicken is boneless and will be cooking for at least 8 hrs.

I'm with you K10 and Connie, I really don't like summer heat either.

Bronwyn, I'll keep an eye out for FitSmart bars, I don't think I've seen them before.

Today I had two larabars, which is probably not the greatest GI-wise, but not much else except the breakfast of fruit and yogurt. Tonight is a huge thing of roasted veggies
and more salmon.

Connie

Sandi...it all sounds NFNS. Well, Maybe the sausage had some S in it. But if it did it was minimal.

I went and got my hair CUT OFF today. Yikes! I didn't want it quite so short. This is going to take some getting used to. I don't know if I like it. Since there is absolutely nothing I can do about it, I'm not thinking about it. It will grow out again. Geez, it's just such a shock. My daughters jaw hit the ground when she saw it. The shorter it is, the more it curls up so that makes it look even shorter. Wow, what a difference.

I'm in bed for the night. A Dean Koontz book, fresh water and I am one happy girl. (Except that when I look up I can see myself in the bathroom mirror and I have no hair!!!!!)

I finally bought a new scale, so I am "starting" at 148, even though I have been on the diet for a little while. I went out to dinner recently and had chicken fajitas but did not eat the tortilla. When I was out at another restaurant I asked for salad dressing, whatever had no sugar, and they brought tahini. The restaurant is supposed to feature healthy mostly organic food, yet they didn't have dressing without sugar. I have been making a crustless pumpkin pie with stevia....nothing like eating a veggie that is dessert!

Hilda

My salad from Logans was around 600 calories. Next time I will not eat the whole thing. It had a lot of grilled chicken in it. I think the key to not being hungry is to have a snack. I was working yesterday and went 7 hours between lunch and dinner.

I've been using stevia on my morning yogurt the past few days. It took a little
getting used to, but I like it.

I now have lots of roasted veggies in the house, which I'm going to finish in the
next day or so, though I'm sort of craving split peas and lentils for some reason.
I guess because I saw Dr. Neal Barnard on my local PBS station this morning. He's
an MD and was talking about how every 14 gram increase in fiber per day causes
your body to require 10% fewer total calories.

Another bonus is that high fiber intake apparently reduces estrogen, overall,
thereby reducing pms symptoms. That is a big pain for me every month.

Hilda, I can see how that would happen. It's just one day, after all.
In order to reduce my night time cravings, I've been consciously having a bigger
lunch, and it seems to be helping so far.

Well, my dinner out Saturday night must have had some flour or sugar in it somewhere. I gained a pound! Maybe I just ate too much. Don't you just hate it when you write a post and send it, then you discover you misspelled some words? I want to yell, Wait a minute! But that never works.
Mattie, do you have a recipe for your crustless pumpkin pie?

We have been total bums today. Rainy and cold...there's actually a chance of wet snow tonight. I washed and styled my hair today. Oh boy, it's too short. I told her I had to be able to put it in a clip in the back or a small pony tail at the nape of my neck. I can't do either one. So now I will be ticked until it grows out enough to do so. Grow hair...grow!

Snacky kind of day, all NFNS, but nothing organized. Some days are just like that.

I hate it when I buy food and don't get it eaten and it expires. I found yogurt that is dated the 21st, and I have way too much of it left. Aldi had frozen blueberries and mixed fruit today. I love to eat frozen fruit.

Hilda was the yoghurt dated best before March 21st? I have understood that on dairy that is the date the store has to sell it by. If it looks and tastes okay I have been told it can be used up to 14 days after that date......not milk usually but things like yoghurt and sour cream. All that being said I am a little squeamish and hate things out of date.

Goodness K10....I can't imagine having to take 14 pills a day.

Roast chicken, roast veggies, fresh veggies and mashed potatoes.

How do you feel about the health reform passing?

Made an easy, healthy butternut squash soup this weekend: sauteed chopped onion, carrot, celery in a little olive oil until soft; added a couple of diced yukon gold potatoes for creaminess and cubed butternut squash. Cooked all until very soft in half chicken stock, half water and pureed until smooth. Seasoned with salt, pepper and a bit of nutmeg.

Weighed in this a.m. and lost a pound. Yea! Had stalled for a while but am motivated again. It's so nice when the scale moves in the right direction.

Hilda, seems like we throw away way too much food at my house, too. But at least since being on NFNS, almost all of the fruits and veggies I buy are actually being eaten. That definitely wasn't the case before.

As for summer, bring on those 85 degree days. I'm in Wisconsin and can't wait to get out and work in my garden and be able to walk the dog without first spending 15 minutes bundling up. It's in the 50s today, so we're getting there...

Good afternoon all.

Curious whether anyone can solve this glycemic load issue.
Glycemic load, in contrast to GI. Can anyone explain
how ice cream would have a glycemic load of 8 and dates 42? According
to a harvard website. Other sites say dates have a GL of about 18.

I just had my car towed to our old shop about an hour or more away. We are trying to figure out what is wrong and we trust this mechanic. We have AAA and we have the one that tows over 100 miles, thankfully.

Bear we had a big discussion about this the difference between Gl and Gi a long time ago on this board. It is quite complex but I understand that the Glycemic load is a better way to gauge things than the G.I. I liked the explanation about it that Dr. Rob Thompson gave.....try to google his name. I would check out some into and cut and paste it but for some reason every time I try to do that I get kicked off. I see others can post UrL's and stuff so I don't know what the deal is that I am having trouble with posting things. I used to be able to cut and paste but that seems reason to kick me off now :-

Blueberry green protein smoothie

big lentil salad with avocado/tomato/baby greens/feta cheese and kalamata olives with basalmic vinegar dressing.

Debbie.....tax payers will still pay through the nose it will be hidden. That is why our socialized medical plan is deceptive......the costs are hidden in big income tax costs.

I hate car troubles.....totally worth taking it some place you trust, even if it is a long ways. Have you decided for sure to move back to your old area?
