Thanks guys. You are right. I am NOT good at eating just a LITTLE sugar. One bite leads to another, etc. I guess I hadnt thought about it as 2 pounds a week for 16 weeks. That would be fantastic! I guess I am like everyone else, I want to lose 10 pounds over night. And Debbie, your daughter knows what she is talking about. A lot of the time I catch myself going to get something to eat just because I am bored. Not really hungry. I guess the secret is, dont eat unless you are actually hungry. Then dont overdo.

My daughter may have Celiac. She has tested 95% positive from the blood test. Has Hashimotos's thyroid and they are connected. Undetected Celiac can cause a lot of autoimmune problems. I am getting tested. She had a scope run down her throat to do an upper bowel biopsy to confirm. Was anemic and found she was not absorbing the iron needed to do her thyroid surgery. That may now be postponed.

Hilda, when my sister was diagnosed with Celiac, it changed her life. Knowing how to eat correctly made her healthy again, but learning a new way of eating was a lot of work. Of course that was 25 years ago and luten free foods are much easier to find. I know your daughter has additional complications, but once it is all figured out, hopefully she will be on the way to healthy too. And you too! I've always thought my sisters food restrictions kept her in the lovely body she has. Good luck to both of you.

Irritability is one of the most common symptoms among children with celiac disease. In some cases, celiac disease goes undetected because the symptoms are so varied and may only flare up occasionally.

Children and adults with untreated celiac disease may become malnourished, meaning they do not get enough nutrients. This can result in anemia, weight loss, and, in children, delayed growth and small stature. Among the possible complications of untreated celiac disease are the inability to develop optimal bone mass in children and the loss of bone in adults, both of which increase the risk of osteoporosis.

The only treatment for celiac disease is to follow a gluten-free diet (see Celiac Dise

Hilda how and why was your daughter tested for Celiac. I assume most of us would never think of asking to be tested however, new studies indicate that the rate of celiac disease is actually much higher in North America than previously thought.....like 1 in every 133 people. Now I would like to be tested to see if there is possibly any connection to my osteoporosis. The one big recommendations I can find from nutritionists and alternative health sites is that for osteoporsis you should eat an alkaline diet.....which is pretty much gluten free.

I spent the entire morning trying to remove a 6 inch comb from my 12 year old's bangs. She was angry and in pain. I was impatient and almost hopeless. Finally after cutting piece after piece of the comb off with my husbands wire cutters I took the last 1 inch chunk off of her very tired, soar scalp. Of course it just happened to get stuck in the same place she got whacked in the head by the cooler at the beach. I need a nap.

I love new furniture as well. I thought you were moving on the 1st K10.

It is so hard to stay focused on the right eating.....yesterday I had a 7 hr. drive I had to make......left at 6:30 a.m. and ended up eating fast food. Last night I was a judge at an food presentation class......yikes! I did not eat enormous amounts of anything ......but definitely the wrong things. Connie I was thinking about you this morning and your goals to go back to school. I know it isn't under the most happy of circumstances that you are contemplating doing that but, one way or the other go for it and do it. You will never regret it even if you don't require it for the reason you thought. I wish I had got down to business and planned a career for this present time of my life. I had intended to and so many things got in the way over the past number of years and I never did it. Over the weekend I made a pasta salad. I think it is worth sharing.

Simple Macaroni Salad

1 (16 oz) package macaroni
2 red bell peppers, chopped
1 green bell pepper,chopped
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 T olive oil
1 cup mayo
1 package dry vegetable soup mix (I used Knorr's)
Parmesan cheese to taste

Cook pasta 8 to 10 min, or just until al dente. Drain and rinse with cold water. Transfer to large bowl. Stir in peppers, green onions, celery and olive oil. Mix mayo and soup mix. Refrigerate for a few hours before serving.

I am not really, really over weight but I am tired of the 'I'm not fat, I am fluffy' jokes. My pants are too tight. I dont want to buy a size larger. My overall goal is 30 pounds but my minigoal is 10 pounds. If (no, when) I achieve that then I will go on to the next ten We just had our 50th wedding anniversary. Had a big party! Now, I go on to the next phase of my life.

One of my granddaughters asked me how old I was, I told her ' When you have had your 50th Anniversary and your 50th class reunion, you have to be somewhere in the vicinity of 70! No getting around it!' I can't imagine how I got this old!

2gorjus, your "somewhere in the vicinity" of 70 years young! You go girl! How wonderful that you are on line. 30 pounds is a big goal, but 10 at a time makes it doable. How are you doing with the NFNS plan?

Yes, brown rice pasta for the salad. I will not make it often, but it is always nice to have another side dish option. It is so full of chopped raw veggies! I made sure to under cook the pasta, it was almost crunchy too. As a result it was not mushy at all. Lot's of chewing involved, it didn't just "slide" down my throat. I think I ate less of it because it was so raw.

I'm going to the grocery this morning. I need to get some veggies. I'll check in later. Great day ladies!

Daughter was diagnosed first with Hashimotos thyroid disease and scheduled for thyroid surgery. Pre-op blood work showed she was anemic. After taking iron, they discovered she was not absorbing iron or B12. Did the blood test for Celiac that is 95% accurate and it was positive. Then because she is younger they wanted to be 100% sure, so she had the upper bowel biopsy and it showed she did have Celiac with mild atrophy. So she does have to go on the gluten free diet for life. I was worried she would not be able to absorb the synthroid after surgery, but she had the surgery yesterday. Of course from most people's perspectives you would think what in the world was the mother doing leaving such a small child unattended. You know how you get so many things on your mind and then don't focus on the thing at hand. It also sounds like she was dealing with a lot with the recent death of her Mother. It is one of those feelings of quilt and sorrow that will be so hard to move beyond. Situations like this can cause so much stress in a relationship. Even if her husband doesn't blame her she will likely feel somehow that he must. I have children (1 boy, 3 girls)around the age of yours Wanda. Actually in the next couple weeks the 9 yr old will be 10 and the 16 yr old will be 17. With a 12 and 14 in between. I can't imagin my son flying a plane. How awesome will that be for him?!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Yes, its so exciting to see my son fly an airplane. I signed him up for the flight camp without his consent..LOL. I knew that he would like it. For dinner I am having asparagus and a lean beef patty (leftover from the 4th of July that I put in the freezer). I am falling in love with asparagus. I read that watermelon is a high glycemic fruit. Will eat it affect my weight loss?

I am praising the Lord for my daughter's good report today from the doctor. Her thyroid had 7 nodules and one was growing into a mass. It turned out to be benign. She had the thyroid out last Thursday and will start her synthroid tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who said a prayer for her. The gluten free diet is a challenge for her -with a husband and 4 kids, but so far they are helping her read labels. At Bible school tonight I talked with a couple who have one child allergic to wheat and eggs, one allergic to peanuts, and the other allergic to dairy. I will be praying for that family who lost the baby.

Wanda, welcome to the group. If I have learned anything about this group, it isyou can count on them for unconditional support. At any time. I haven't been on very long but I feel like I have known them forever.

Hilda, I am so thankful about your daughter. We always think our peoblems are the worst, then you hear about someone else's troubles. I can't imagine how that mother plans meals! I thought I had it bad with my husbands dietary problems and me trying to lose weight!

Just found out the young mother who lost the baby is only 19, is pregnant for the third time and has never been married! Now that's a set of troubles!

Wanda, I,too, love asparagus. I eat it like candy. You might want to control your portions of watermelon. It has a lot of sugar in it. Or so I have been told. I also love the local farmer's markets. You can load up on all kinds of fresh foods. This is a great time of the year.

How do you fix the asparagus. Post recipes!

Good morning ladies. Hilda, google asparagus recipes. You will find tons of options. I cook my asparagus in 1/2 in water for 8 minutes. Sometimes I sprinkle some dill on it with the butter and salt. Yum! We are having asparagus tonight. Great news about the benign bumbs!

I love watermelon too. I limit my fruit, very easy for me to do since I'm not a huge fruit fan. I remember eating TONS of watermelon and plums when I was pregnant. I retained so much water from them, my doctor wouldn't let me eat them anymore. Just a thought...if you retain water watch how much fruit you eat.

My prayers for the mother are increased!

Busy day ahead. First thing, coloring hair and then some makeup. I should look a lot better by the end of the day. I'll check in later...great day all.

Wanda: Welcome. I turned 40 last October and I have teens as well. I am totally off-track but when we move next week I am getting back on this journey. My mini-goal is 30 pounds and then 30 more after that. I think that will be easier for my mind to grasp.

What a sad situation for that poor young mother. I sure hope she has some family support of some kind. Such a shame.

Hilda: Wonderful news in regards to your daughter. God is so good.

It is going to be a scorcher today. Did I ever mention I hate the heat? smile

ok,I just got off the scale and lost 2 more pounds. I enjoy this diet and I am positive I will continue to stick with it and lose weight. My first goal is to lose 40lbs by my birthday on October 9th. Connie, you make me laugh, you remind me so much of my older sister..LOL. Hilda, I cook my asparagus with butter in a pan and I just saute' them. I cut up cucumbers this morning so I have something to snack on all day. I will alternate between tortilla chips and watermelon. I won't eat them both on the same day. I hope that helps.

Debbie: I think Alaska would be for me. Actually, my friend is in Alaska right now and she said it was 80 the other day. You know how people get the winter blues? I get them in the summer. The summer isn't fun for me.

Wanda: What part of the country do you live in? Good job on the loss.

Hilda, that is great news.

I'm the same way in the summer, K10.

Welcome, Wanda. Have you tried berries? Any kind at all will be full of nutrients
and _very_ low in sugar. They happen to be my favorite just based on taste.
Also, we have the same birthday, October 9th. wink

Hey Bear, yes I love berries like strawberries and blueberries but I add a little splenda to make them sweeter. Is splenda ok in moderation?
Bear

splenda is okay, but stevia is better if you can get it.

A bowl of frozen blueberries is a great snack. I buy the frozen blueberries at Aldi. Let them thaw just a little before eating. Very refreshing when it is so hot.

Is this fresh or frozen asparagus you are eating?

K10: I live in Los Angeles, CA.
Hilda: that what I do with my blueberries and I just love it.
Bear: Thank you, I am going to wholefoods tomorrow to get some stevia. I didn't eat dinner tonight because I had some Mission tortilla chips and salsa and a bowl of cucumbers. I have not craved sugar or flour at all. I hope I can keep this going.

Wanda, they can be very helpful there. If I were going, I would ask which kind of stevia
to get - some are much tastier than others, I hear.

I stopped taking my supplements and have been paying for it these last two days. I vasilated between sad and mad. My poor kids have gotten the brunt of it which makes me even sadder. I had to stop to see what I've been doing differently. Besides my new cycle blindsiding me two days ago I realized I havent been taking my supplements. So back to taking:
Fish oil
liquid form of unrefined Omegs fatty acids (organic flax, sesame and sunflower seed oils)
multi vitamin
iron
magnesium
B12
I went for a walk this AM.
I'm hoping its all hormonal but with my antidepressant being done in only a couple weeks it really scared me. I'm on such a low non theraputic dose now. Just 15 grains which is less than 2 mg. I took 2 extra grains yesterday and I think I'll hold at 17 for a few days or until I feel better. I don't want a relaps. I feel more centered today and with God's help I'll return to my old new self.

K10 could you try to catch me on IM if you get on today and you happen to have an extra minute laying around. :o)

Hey, Debbie. Hope you feel better soon.
Make sure you take your supplements with something fatty to eat, or else you won't absorb
them very well.
