Description

This diet book contains common-sense techniques on how to eat better and achieve a healthier lifestyle. It gets you to focus on foods that are nutritional and satisfying. Thus, you can both lose weight and become healthier in the process.

You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

The approach is to keep things simple by just eliminating flour and sugar, the two primary food ingredients that are causing the obesity problem in America. Our culture has become addicted to sweets. This book helps you break the addiction and get on track for eating healthier while losing that extra weight.

History

Dr. Gott is a medical columnist published in over 350 newspaper daily. He is a practicing physician with a general practice in Connecticut. He's also the director of medicine at Hotchkiss School (a prep-school).

Criticism

Giving up bread and sweets may simply be too hard for some people. Sugar is in a great majority of products sold today. While the diet sounds simple, implementing it and sticking to it is quiet a challenge.

This year is big on heat! Yesterday we had 115, that's heat index. Last month was the second hottest June on record. I really and truly and literally hibernate in the summer months. But last year our summer was so lovely, low humidity...or maybe it was the summer before that. Anyway, I remember I had great hair for the whole summer.

MIL has not been eating well or taking her meds! I've spent the last couple of days with her getting her back to normal. I thought she was hospital bound at first.

Lot's to do today. We had movie night last night and I had some no no's. Of course now I regret it. Great day all.

I am reminding myself today of what I know to be true.

By eating high glycemic foods(flour and sugar) my blood sugar rises, leading to a large release of insulin, which then removes the sugar from my circulation, storing it as fat and glycogen, causing my blood sugar to drop over the next one to two hours making me feel weak, lightheaded, cranky and even exhausted. Then the cyle repeats again.

I'm starting over to be clean of all the garbage I've put in my body lately. Its been a tough day so far but I'm looking forward to the benefits both psychological and physical. I feel determined, no matter how crabby I feel at the moment.

Lately I've given in to ice cream and had the exact same experience, Debbie.

Today I decided to make my own, again, this time just using coconut milk and
a banana. I think the amount of fat brings down the GI of the banana somewhat,
but I know this is better for me than ice cream. I need to stop messing around!

Morning ladies. I finally have a "free" morning and I can't move! I have a million things to do today...but I am going to go slow. MIL is doing better. Her mental abilities are slipping a bit. My husband wants me to cook her dinner everyday, which sounds reasonable since I cook for us. But, I don't cook everyday and it's just a little more pressure on me. I will do my best.

I plan on clean eating today. Something always seems to slip me up lately! I hope everyone is well.

No, I haven't, but my cousin has been several times. She and her husband used to love taking their two sons and go camping at all the state parks. Her husband passed away 3 years ago. Now she goes with her two sons. One is an elementary school teacher and the other has Down Syndrome. They are in Colorado right now. She called last night and said they were going to Dodge City! The one with Down is a history nut. He loves everything old. That is why he loves me! Ha!

Hello ladies. I have been trying to keep up with the posts, I'm barely able to! K10, good luck with the move and we've all said "getting back on track"...repeatedly! Bronwyn, you certainly have a worldly family. Haiti sounds so very...what's the word? How about "far away." And maybe different. Debbie, 4 teenagers! I can't imagine. Hilda, a gluten free diet is probably good for everyone. And eating only nutritious food is just plain smart. I think I may have celiac.

I am done..."DONE" with the junk food. Here's what I think has happened. Everyone in my house keeps bringing bad foods in the house and then not putting them up. If I'm not eating them during the day, which I really try not to do, I get them at night. So I'm putting my foot down and putting an end to it. We do not need that stuff in the house. We all can use to lose weight. I just have to be strict. And I can be when I put my mind to it. Last night daughter made brownies. Man, does she have a sweet tooth. Anyway, I didn't have any and I had her put them away somewhere hidden after I went to bed. So when I got up at 2 am and started looking for food I had a couple of rice cakes. It's a start.

Maybe this weekend I can catch up with everyone. I hope so. I miss my diethound time.

I live in Milwaukee. I'm 54 with one sone and four grandaughters. I still work outside the home.

Wish me luck in losing something and getting back on track. I was doing Atkins it was too food restricted. I love vegetables and FRUIT. I hope this diet is as easy as it seems to be.

Morning all. I weighed this morning..153 on the nose. Not bad, not good. I was actually hoping I would have dropped one or two pounds, but I just need to give it time. I'm feeling tighter in my stomach, that always happens when I stay NFNS.

Go Debbie! Down 7 pounds...that's a big loss. My guess is even if you can't tell a difference in your actual size, others are probably noticing a leanness in your appearance. Like a swelling that has gone down. I remember people kept telling me I had lost lot's of weight in my face. That could only have been swelling or puffiness, a side effect caused by inflammation, caused by F & S. You are doing so good!

Welcome nana. This diet really is wonderful. It is so healthy, unlike Atkins. You do want to watch your fruit intake, especially fruit juices. But if you watch your calories and stick with the plan, you can really drop the pounds. So much of it is common sense. But you will soon find out sugar is everywhere, under different names. It doesn't take long to come up with acceptable foods. You will find that the foods you eat are all nutritious. So you will be eating less, but getting more nutrition. Thank you Dr Gott!

K10, hope you are doing well. Check in when you can. Hope you are well Bronwyn and Hilda.

Bear, we haven't been able to watch Madmen yet. Today is the day.

Husband just asked me if I want a waffle! HELLO! I really have slipped so much that my family now thinks anything goes for me and food. My fault. I declined his offer. I am on a mission to drop 5 pounds asap. If I do that, I think I can get back into my size 10 pants. I need to have a goal in regards to eating in my life. It keeps me motivated.

It's tough when family members bring bad foods into the house. I wish I could

Bear, I know what you mean. My husband has so many eating requirements. it isnt funny! He has to eat often and has to have high caloric things. He has a Iliostomy. That means he has no bowels. As a result, he doesnt get the nutritional value from his food. Everything just goes right through him. So we have a lot of pies, cakes, icecream, etc. at our house all the time. Usually, I am pretty good. Sometimes, I slip. Keep up the good work! You can do it!

199 still. I guess the birthday cake caught up with me. I not surprised though. I have been stress eating. My girlfriends nephew committed suicide and its been a terrible time. I've been arguing with my sister. And I am completely off my antidepressants now for 24 hours. My body is still adjusting to that but I am doing very well in spite of the strife.

I drink wine on occassion but my husband was drinking too often for comfort. We discussed my concerns about it and we havent had any in the house for 3 weeks now. That is an adjustment too.

All in all I think I am handling these challenges pretty good. My mood is a bit lower than I would like but I can't complain. There was a time where just one of these things would have sent me to bed for most of the day. I never nap anymore. I don't sleep as well at night as I think I should but I never sleep well when I am at odds with someone (my sister)

I will try to concentrate on my diet more and continue the walking I have been doing with my husband. It is so good when we walk. We are gone more than 30 minutes without the kids. We use the time to talk about feelings and about our day and future plans. Its so good for us. We missed last nights walk because we decided to drive to the new camp ground and check it out. We wanted to see if it was worth the money as its more than we are used to spending. But I missed our walk so much. We had time together in the car but it wasnt the same. There is something special about moving and walking that gets conversation flowing. I think just the act of walking keeps the mind thiking and moving as well.

That's just the way it is...I have accepted that. You sound like you are doing ok without your antidepressant. So sorry about your friends nephew. And stay away from sis for awhile if you can! Those numbers on the scale are going to fluctuate, just keep heading in the right direction.

153.4 this morning. Yesterday was a whole bunch of "tasting this and that." Nothing major, but it all adds up I guess.

Today's the bday party. I need to clean house, hair and makeup (I hate those jobs!) and run to the store. Hope you all have a good day.

Connie, I thought of you and your husband when I wrote what I did. But I have to tell you it was not without a lot of tears and anger that we both came to the conclusion that this drinking was not good for the familyin general and for the children to see. He even went to a therapist two times then decided he didnt need to go anymore. It was not easy and is still a challenge but we are communicating about our feelings and that is the most important thing we can do. I can't lie I'd love to have a drink sometimes. My problem isn't drinking, its stopping drinking. His problem was frequency of drinking. It was very sneeky as he would never appear drunk or loud but always have a little juice glass of wine in his hand from the time he started (after work or after dinner)until he fell asleep. So together we were a mess. We don't think either of us is an alcoholic but we are definitely problem drinkers. I hope we can manage to stay in control.

I heard it said about an ex-smoker that he was only one puff away from a pack a day. Meaning if he took even just one puff he would be hooked again. I feel like I'm one drink away from a whole bottle. As when I drink I want to keep drinking and if we run out I want to find a way to get more. So might as well just not take that first drink. It always seems to lead to a hang over.

I wish you could have a similar experience as ours. But only you know your husband.

You know what Debbie, I am always looking for definitions of an alcoholic. When I read your post, especially the second paragragh, I felt a sense of worry. I'm so glad the two of you are taking this step. Your whole family will benefit...trust me on that.

Thanks Connie, I know you mean well. We realze this is serious. Just because my drinking was far and few in between dosnt mean the style in which I drank wasnt alarming. So far so good. Hopefully we can continue to hold each other up in support.

Well, I am not going to be weighing today...no way! Too much everything yesterday. But the cake and the party was wonderful. What a precious child she is.

with me working every day trying to get my walk in in the evening and turn around and get ready for work the next day doesn't give me much time to go on line in the evening. I've been doing pretty good in the morning when I weigh in that will trully tell the story. I see from reading your post that we all fall but it seems you ladies always get back up and on track. If the scale doesn't move I'm going to keep on truckin. Wish me luck.

Good luck Sexynana.

I am so tired. I cleaned and cleaned my old house last night and today. Thanks to my mom (step-mom) for helping me. When the owner walked in and said the house was "immaculate" I was pleased. Hopefully I will be seeing my full deposit very soon.

Now I am in my new house that is not as bright and shiny and is full of boxes. Kind of depressing. I know it doesn't help that I am tired, overwhelmed and sad that we moved. Let me add fat, sick of eating crap and just need to get on track. Monday is THE day. I know I have said that many times lately, but this is it. Bro-in-law is very heavy, hubby and I are getting that way, so this has to happen. I know I am in the right frame of mind because I am looking forward to it.

We are also going to start walking every night. We live in a neighborhood with no hills, finally. If we want hills we live 7/10 of a mile from a really nice big park.

Talk soon.

Good night.

BTW hubby has worked late all week. Between missing 2 days of work last week for the move, inventory and month-end stuff he has been busy.

Hello ladies. The temp here today is 103, heat index of 120. It is so hot here you can't sand to be outside any length if time. My husband does it, he likes the heat to a point. He never lets it stop him from doing what he wants to do. I was outside for an hour or so first thing this morning. I can't wait for fall and winter...can't wait.

You are on the right track nana. Letting NFNS take over your life can take a little time. First it takes effort, then it becomes easier, then the norm. If you step away from the plan for awhile, your body will object! Good for you for walking.

K10, honey! I wish I could be there to help you. But I would probably drive you crazy telling you how to arrange your furniture. That's the fun part. Try to take it slow and steady. I know the feeling of looking forward to eating well...it's a good feeling.

I also can't wait for fall, I love it.

Good work, Nana.

I had nothing but protein and a little greens today, and feel kinda gross
anyway. Like, overfull. Maybe too much salt?

Hi everyone - Glad to see you are all still around. This post has been here several years. I think it's great. It's like friends who are always there.

Hersheys makes sugar free dark chocolate. Does anyone eat it? I just have one or two pieces a day. It's expensive though. I'm trying to eat fruits and veggies at every meal; like a few raw carrots at breakfast, along with breakfast. Hope I can find some other good raw veggies to face in the morning. What raw veggies is anyone eating?

We are in Rhode Island this week, and eating out a lot. So I won't weigh myself for a few days after we get back home. I weighed 144 before we left Massachusetts about 6 days ago.

Kathy, welcome back. I am pigging out on green bell peppers. Not too good for breakfast though. I am at 166. I think I am at a plateau. Cant seem to go down. I'll keep at it though.

My husband and I have our 'date night' every Saturday night. We eat out. I have found out that if I am very good all week long, then it isn't too hard to control myself on Saturday night.

Hi guys, I am just now trying out this diet. So far lost 7 pounds but have plenty more to go. I am at 296. I have been going to the public park and walking the trails too. Unfortunately I wind up eating a lot of drive-thru lunches because I am always eating on the road for work. This past week I've eaten a lot of salads but that gets boring to me after a while. Any other drive thru lunch suggestions?

Misty,
Cheese sticks and almonds or walnuts. Buy individual packs of nuts or take come in a baggie, just a handful. (beware though, they are so easy to over eat, lots of calories)Cheese sticks will keep until lunch in those individual wrappers. And they taste better room temperature anyway. smileTake a few Triscuit crackers too. Bottled water. AVOID fast food like the plaque. Tring to keep lunch at between 300 and 400 calories is not easy when you eat fast food. But we all know this , don't we?
I hate it that I love to eat out so much.frown
Also if you don't mind taking a cold pack with you, take some greek yogurt and berries along. Salads get sooooo boring.

Misty: Welcome. Don't forget you can also get burgers and such without the bun. Have all the veggies that normally come with a burger or chicken breast. There could be sugar added to the chicken breast though. Do you have El Pollo Loco around? They are a great option.
Tomorrow is THE day. I am looking forward to it.

I like to get a fruit and yogurt parfait at McDonald's. Along with a diet coke, it is very filling for me. I have ordered my cheeseburgers without the bun for several years. I just dont care that much for buns. But if I admit it, I always feel bloated after I eat a cheeseburger. Maybe my body is trying to tell me something.

Golf was canceled today due to lightning storm. So here I sit with the rain coming down.
I got 2 hours of sleep last night between 4:45 and 6:16. What will I do with myself. I took Melatonin but it only helped me sleep between 9:30 and 11:00. Crazy night.
I have one of those silly teenaged pop songs stuck in my head!! Its driving me wild. So I listened to Clair de Lune~~Wonderful!

Just enough time for a quick check in. I walked outside this morning at 9:30 and my reading glasses steamed up! I truly is miserable outside.

I have had to "up" my nighttime strategy to keep out of the junk food. So far, so good. I just don't want to weigh when I have been munching so much...I already know I am going to be bummed.

Everyone sounds good. I'm busy with little one and MIL.

Good afternoon, all.

Hey, Debbie, I don't know if you're at all interested in taking different vitamins,
but I found out recently that magnesium, inositol (apparently a kind of b-vitamin)
and zinc are helpful for sleep and other brain things. wink I think you already
take fish oil and vitamin D. They have all been in clinical trials for depression and anxiety.

I'm taking them and I have very little anxiety and seem to sleep better.

Hi Bear, Thanks for the info. I will have to add the inositol, never heard of that one. I'll look it up.
I'm up for the first time tonight already.
