Description

This diet book contains common-sense techniques on how to eat better and achieve a healthier lifestyle. It gets you to focus on foods that are nutritional and satisfying. Thus, you can both lose weight and become healthier in the process.

You can eat brown rice, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. But, you have to stop eating foods like bagels, pasta, bread, cereal, white rice, cookies, sweets, and cakes.

Many excellent recipes are included in the book with have no flour and sugar, yet taste delicious.

The approach is to keep things simple by just eliminating flour and sugar, the two primary food ingredients that are causing the obesity problem in America. Our culture has become addicted to sweets. This book helps you break the addiction and get on track for eating healthier while losing that extra weight.

History

Dr. Gott is a medical columnist published in over 350 newspaper daily. He is a practicing physician with a general practice in Connecticut. He's also the director of medicine at Hotchkiss School (a prep-school).

Criticism

Giving up bread and sweets may simply be too hard for some people. Sugar is in a great majority of products sold today. While the diet sounds simple, implementing it and sticking to it is quiet a challenge.

Connie - I'm not sticking totally to NFNS. I have 1 piece of dark chocolate a day. And I'm hooked one piece of cinnamon raisin toast a day with my omelet and an apple. Besides those 2 things there is any other flour and sugar. Still keeping my carbs grams under 100 a day. I haven't weight myself lately. I don't want to lose weight now because my son's wedding is next week and I want the dress to fit well. After that, well, I might try harder on the nautilus equipment at the gym before my exercise class. Building muscle is suppose to boost metabolism and those machines are pretty comfortable! Someone noticed I had trimmed down. It's all in the carb counting I think. I weigh about 142 and I'm 5'5 1/2". The day after my first son was born I weighed 136!!. So that is a possible goal for me.

Ok, this is going to be a story of "life happens...." Yesterday I quite taking my decongestant and I finally had an appetite! I hadn't really ate since Tues. I met my friend and little one for dinner at a mexican restaurant and I became so hungry I ate everything I could get my hands on! I was making up for lost time in a very tasty way! Little one refused to leave my side, she gave me about 20 kisses and 20 hugs. So at that point I'm a goner and her wish is my command...and her wish was to spend the night with Aunt Ca, which was fine with me so she just left a little bit ago and once again I am wore out. I pretty closely stuck with the plan, but not 100%. So I will not weigh for a couple of days and I am back on track as of right now. I hope all of you are well and enjoying your weekend. I know I have.

You guys are such a great bunch of good friends! I have been fairly good. Is that the same as fairly bad? I haven't weighed lately but my pants are still too tight. I do have a problem with my metabolism because of my thyroid trouble. It as a constant struggle. For some reason I am really down today. Maybe some time at church will cheer me up. Time to go, talk to you later.

I was right! Joining all our church family in some good scripture really perked me up. There is just something about fire and brimstone that really gets you going.

My grandson plays football and he wants to go to Notre Dame. He is a running back and tore his ACL two weeks ago. He had surgery and is now out for the season. But as good as he is at football, he really loves playing baseball. He is only a sophomore so he has a lot of time to make up his mind.

Things are going well on the diet front. It seems to be harder this time. Halloween is coming up and I have to resist the Reese's Cups! My downfall!
Debbie M.
posted 10-Oct-2010 5:36pm

I understand all too well about the ACL's. I completely severed both of mine years ago without reconstuction. They only did surgery back then if you were a pro athlete. Now a days they do reconstruction on more of a regular basis. I missed out. I guess I could still have it done but its a very long and strenuos recovery. It requires tons of rehab but if you are young its worth it. I'm not sure it would be worth it for me.

Oh, Hilda, I know what it is like to be a caregiver. You run on fumes for as long as you can and finally your body just collapses. When my husband was so sick, it seems like I was needed for something all the time. The good thing is- he got better. I hope your Mom does too.

I weighed today. Not good went up a pound. I thought I was doing so good. I'll have to try harder.

Our weather (South Central Indiana) is wonderful! High 70s. No humidity. My husband can breath easier. This has been a rough summer for him. He has COPD. He has a hard time breathing in the very humid 90s weather we had all summer.

A funny thing is happening to my skin. Around my stomach and sides its getting all squishy. I suppose from losing fat. I guess its a good thing but wierd. 193.5 today.

I didn't sleep well last night as I kept waking up thinking about Monica my daughters freshman friend. She is having a very tough personal life. Her parents drink and apparently she got kicked out and is staying with an Aunt. She always tries to find some place to stay during the weekends. She asked if she could come stay with us Friday thru Sunday this weekend. She is in activities and is keeping up her grades. A delightful girl but a bit reckless. She had a boyfriend but apparently couldnt handle the drama. Its just as well. I don't want to see her get pregnant. She is just the sort to spin out of control and into the arms of an adoring guy. Its very upsetting to see a young girl living this way. She said she wanted to come and live with us but knew we had a full house. Oh stab me in the heart. :(
I said she could come for the weekend. We will see what happens after that.

Debbie, I,too, would want to just jump right in there and let this poor girl come to our house, but you should be sure her parents are in agreement with her staying there. I am thinking purely legal-wise. If something should happen to her while she is staying with you you could be sued. Do you know for a fact her parents are drinkers? Maybe she just doesn't want to follow the rules. Oh, dear, I am such a gloomy gus today. I surely hope this girl finds the right way.

I'm here to check in! Hope everyone is doing well. Weighed in at 177.6 on Saturday. Not a huge drop but I'll take it! Debbie M, I too have a wedding coming up (November 13th)! Have you decided what you are going to wear? I've been looking at dresses online but I can't be sure they will fit. That means a trip to the shopping mall ...

I went to the bridal shower on Saturday (at a country club). I skipped the salad dressing, bread basket and dessert but I ate all of my salad, boneless chicken breast and mashed potatoes (shared my veggies with daughter who is 6). I am truly amazed at what is considered a kid's meal. My daughters plate came out with breaded chicken nuggets and french fries! Her school menu is just as bad ... Anyhow, I was also surprised that I was the only one at the table who ate everything on my plate and did not feel guilty. It was just an odd observation ...

Morning all. I have been under the weather (still!) and busy. But today I get to take it easy...mostly. I began feeling better on Monday and then Tuesday I had little one from 9 am till 6:30. I think I just over did it. Then yesterday, my stomach was tore up most of the day. Also, I didn't sleep Tuesday night, stress I think, so this morning I went back to sleep. Tomorrow I have to work, so today is going to be a relaxing day. I need to color my hair and do some laundry. If I feel like it after that, grocery shopping. As for weighing, I need to start eating normally and then see what it is. When I was taking the meds I got down to 148.8, but that was because I couldn't eat. Then when I got off the med I ate like crazy and went up to 153. Since then I have ate what was in the house, mostly NFNS, and haven't had the energy to make a menu and a list and shop. So that's where I'm at. I hope by the weekend to be back to myself.

Well there has been a lot of stuff that I missed here: School plays, infections, weddings......lots of things happening, eh smile

I watched with interest as they brought the miners to the surface.....life is wonderful and you just couldn't help but feel emotional about their desire to be back with family and loved ones. I know the one man said that he wanted to be a better husband and father.....spend more time with his family. Boo on those who had mistress' and had been unfaithful to their wives. Now they are back in the "world" and freed from that underground "hell" how long will they remember what is really important and what they came to realize were the most important things in life. The problem is it is so hard to keep a commitment to those things you know are right, so easy to become complacent......it kind of made me think of the commitment to health as well....how fleeting that commitment can be when temptation of unhealthy foods are placed before you. I have to admit though that more and more I desire health and well being and feel more and more revolted by those things that do not engender those things I want. I am happy with the direction I am taking with my health but the process is so very slow. I am a little obsessed with reading about the raw movement, whole foods and good nutrition.......it is my passion. I need to take that passion and more fully implement the things I am studying into my life. There is always the difficulty of wanting family to support you and willingly go along with your new passions.....but that is to frustrating and I think the best you can do is try and be a good example yourself.

Kathy I hope the wedding goes well. You are at a lovely weight....enjoy it and be happy.

I came down stairs to the computer to check out what was up with the NFNS team.....and I have been sitting here giggling ..... "fell in love with Canadian bacon". Connie that struck me quite funny. Oh my word Bear....wow! Congratulations that is so exciting. Bear my cousin is the associate concert master with the Calgary Philharmonic, he has also filled in numerous times as the concert master. He also has traveled a lot with his music career. Conductors travel to conduct at different events.....I bet they have met before. How does he walk smile It sounds like a good match when you find yourselves traveling so constantly to be together. How far from Toronto are you.,,,,,, I am over 2000 miles away from it myself.

I have never seen any of the T.V. shows being talked about....can't comment.

Connie I am NOT following Tosca Reno. I am eating a fairly high percentage of raw food. I don't plan to eat 100%....I think that could be excessive and obsessive. In all the reading, u-tubes I have watched and so forth of the raw food movement I find that many of them become a little over the top. It becomes their new religion. My goal is to become more alkaline and improve my bone health. Of course, I am hoping to trim down as a result.

I am considering ordering Tosca Reno's book, her first one. I wanted to get your thoughts on it. I know I need to eat more "raw" foods, I was hoping her book would be a good intro. My chicken noodle soup came out great, I ate and am pleasantly full. I had a toasted an ezek muffin with it. I still have a little bit of hummus left. I haven't had cheese in three days! I'm going to make a different kind of hummus and try to always have some on hand. Yeah I laughed when I thought Bear wrote Canadian bacon! And I wondered about her new beaus gait. I also wonder what he looks like...tall, dark and handsome...or light haired? I'm just being nosey.

I am 4 hours from toronto by train after I cross the border, which takes about 40 minutes. I actually like the train and can get work done, I find it pleasant.

He is health conscious, although not as much as I... that's okay, he makes good decisions, does not eat much meat, etc.

Bronwyn, that is so cool about your cousin. He has probably heard of your cousin, but I wouldn't think your cousin has heard of him, he's only 28... smile

His walk is fantastic, thank you very much! smile Yes, he is graceful in every way.
He is tall, dark and handsome. For me at 5'4", 5'11" is tall... smile

Too bad you are so far away Connie, I have all of Tosca Reno's book and you could for sure borrow them. Do I love her books....I guess not really as I have never paid much attention to them or used them much if at all. It isn't truly fair of me to say that however, as I am a big collector of diet books most of which I have paid little to no attention to. Google clean eating recipes on line......message form google monster herself!

Morning all. 150.2 this morning. Yippee! Wow, my body feels pretty lithe. Light. I think the hummus has helped. You all would shudder at the amount of cheese I ate, pretty much daily. I've worn my size 10 jeans...they are stretchy so I can move in them even though they are tight. I'm going to make the red pepper hummus next.

Positive thoughts Debbie. I once was called in for a meeting and I was expecting the worse, but it ended up being positive. Of course, I had a negative one too. Keep your head, it all works out in the end.

Bronwyn, I don't know if Tosca's books are NFNS, but some of the reviews were great.

Lot's to do today. Later gang. Oh, btw, I had some bad outcomes shipping book rate. Those boxes get abused!

Good luck at the meeting, Debbie. Try not to worry until you're given something to worry about.

Today, I resolve to go home and put the end of my birthday cake in the freezer downstairs. It really hasn't given me much trouble, but I can't walk around with the attitude that I can have a little dark choc and honey (like last night) and feel fine the next day. I can't! I'm exhausted even after a decent night's sleep, ugh.

Good day all.

Ok, I'll try no to worry. I made the apt. ASAP because I didn't want to have to wait. Husband is going to meet with me too. Thats soothing.

I had too many calories and the wrong kind of calories this weekend. I[m paying for it today. My gut won't let me forget. I HAVE to be good. Naughty me. :(

Good for you Connie.

Bear, Isn't it great to be in love? I'm still in love. :)

Hi Bronwyn! Hey, K10!

Debbie, your marriage will go down as one of the great romances of all time! Good for you.

Bear, is your goal to be 100% NFNS? Do you think NFNS is the healthiest way to eat? I know a lot of people think some sugar is ok...I need to stay away from it so it's easy for me to think of all sugar as bad. But I still want to lose some more weight, so NFNS is mandatory for weight loss in my opinion.

I once knew a woman who had gained quite a bit of weight...mid life gain...and she was convinced if she could just get it off she could maintain by splurging only once a week. And maybe that's true. But she was having a hard time getting it off. I lost touch with her. But I realize she looked at changing her eating habits as sacrifice, whereas I look at NFNS as a gift. I have never ate so well in my life. Last night everyone was eating chocolate chip mint ice cream. No thank you. I had some cantaloupe...yum!

The meeting went well. Daughter is too talky and disturbs others. And easily becomes distracted. Difficult staying on task. Sounds like my son?! Teacher is not angry and praised her in a lot of other ways. Thanks for the advise all who commented.

Friend Chris is getting out of hospital today after test results on his heart came back good. I hope this is all the drama for him. I'm so thankful my husband didnt have any complications.

Connie, My husband and I know how special our relationship is. Thank you.

Hello all. I am not on track at all, but I am encouraged to hear about the good choices you guys are making most of the time.
Debbie: I am glad you had a good meeting. I was thinking, a child that is too talkative..... hmmm I was one of those children and I am one of those adults. I am happy that Chris is doing better and it is wonderful that your hubby didn't have any of these problems.
Connie: Good for you on the fruit choice.
Bear: How exciting to have a new "friend". I hope things go well for you two.

Thank you to everyone for the lovely well wishes, I appreciate it.

Connie, to answer your question, I believe in being 100% NFNS, and more... no processed foods,
or as minimal as possible. I blame my birthday for getting me off track on a couple of days, but
otherwise I've been fine. I absolutely want to avoid sugar as much as possible because of how
bad I know it is and how awfully tired I get the next day. I will allow it over the holidays, though.

Debbie, I'm glad your meeting went well. I always mean to congratulate you on your marriage,
that is really lovely to still be in love, and something I hope to have myself. smile

Not that anyone asked for my opinion but...........here it is.
I believe after the initial infatuation is over love grows. Then love is a choice. When you choose to stay in love and are 100% committed, then you stay in love. At least that's what happened with us. That's the way it is with God. We are not lovable all the time but He chooses to love us anyway.

I heard it said once, that when you get engaged have both eyes wide open. Then after you are married, close one eye. heh smile

Hi, guys, My computer blew a gasket last Wednesday! I have had the worst weekend. I couldn't open a single email. That was what life was like about 15 years ago. No computers. Boy, am I glad to be back on.I missed out on so much in 5 days.
Debbie M.
posted 18-Oct-2010 10:23pm

Sorry you missed out 2gorjus. The computer can get addictive for me. I sit down to it several times a day. I'm home a lot so it feels like my contact with the outside world. When my first child was born 17 years ago I had 2 friends with babies the same age. They also stayed home with their kids. We were either at each others houses or on the telephone. Now that those other moms are back to work and I'm not, it is very different. So my computer is my social life. I would miss it terribly if I couldn't have my PC. My one friend is happy to be working but the other is forced to work to pay for a large mtg and is resentful. She warns me not to be fooled into thinking you can have it all. She wishes she could still be home and be the kind of mom she used to be. Interesting points of view from two different moms with similar lives, yet different opinions.

Happy Birthday to your kiddo. Just DON'T allow the strife to get to you. Focus on your lovely daughter and the joy that she is and ignore the other stuff.

I did a step class today. I can tell already I will be SORE tomorrow. At least I am going to get my massage today. Good timing on my part.

Hubby has an auditor at work all week. He is stressing out and then next week is the end of the month and the end of the quarter so that means inventory and the regular end of the month stuff. He is wondering if he should have taken this job. He wasn't happy where he was, but I believe he puts too much pressure on himself. He enjoys the fact that the numbers are improving since he has been there. It is 6 months already. I don't know what to tell him.

Tell him all he can do, is all he can do! Wow, 6 month already. Great job to him for his numbers improving!! I bet your step class was hard. I hear they are. I have never done one. Like Bronwyn, my knees would not tolerate it too well.

Thanks for the well wishes for my daugher. I will do as you say K10 and focus my baby. Heh, 15 year old baby.

Bear, When is your next date?

Thanks K10 and Debbie for the thoughts on love, I fully agree, and the part Debbie mentioned
about God is lovely - and true, I think. We have built a foundation of very clear communication.
I probably wouldn't be sharing so much about him unless I felt the way I do, which is... I just know.
"When you know, you know."

Our next date is Friday, when I go up to Toronto by train for the weekend.

Hi all, I've been reading your posts with a lot of interest. I started NFNS 3 weeks ago and have lost 10 pounds. (Just had my third child in June, weighed 232 when he was born, am down to 186.5.) I am wondering if anyone has done this diet while nursing? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for foods that fill you up that you can grab quickly? (My eldest child is 3 and 1/2, my middle will be 2 in December, so it is hectic at our house!) After 3 weeks I am getting tired of snacking on mixed nuts all the time!

Well, my computer has been acting up again. My son-in-law, the computer nerd, came down again to roto-rooter it again. Maybe it is just time to get a new one.

My niece and her husband once took a train trip through the Rockies on one of those glass domes trains. She said it was wonderful!

Lincoln, welcome, it has been too long ago to advise you about nursing, but maybe you could grab some mini-carrots or sliced green peppers. I love both of those. Cheese cubes are good also. But watch how many you eat. The calories add up.

I've been so exhausted lately I don't know what is going on, plus not sleeping well.
Going to bed after dinner tonight.
