Phentermine (Adipex, Ionamin, Duromine)

Summary

Phentermine is a prescription appetite suppressant. It is one of the two ingredients in Fen-phen.

Description

Phentermine comes as either a quick-acting drug (Adipex) or
a time-release drug (Ionamin or Duromine). It is generally only prescribed to people who are morbidly obese and thus are have health risks because of their weight.

Phentermine affects the neurotransmitters in your brain, causing stimulation which your brain responds to by turning off the hunger sensation.

Generally, patients only receive Phentermine for up to 12 weeks. Longer term use is not encouraged due to the issues of a tolerance reaction. Phentermine may become less effective over time, thus it's best not to use it for too long.

History

Phentermine was one of the two drugs in the infamous Fen-phen (which was withdrawn from the US market after it was linked to heart-related illnesses and deaths). But, it was Fenfluramine that was the problem with Fen-phen. So, Phentermine is still available.

Criticism

Phentermine acts like an amphetamine and thus can be addictive. Because of this, it is a controlled substance.

Phentermine is linked to insomnia and may cause blood pressure and heart rate to increase. Essentially, it's a stimulant and has all the side-effects (both negative and positive) of one.

HE'S A MEMBER OF THE ASBP (AMERICAN SOCIETY OF BARIATRIC PHYSICIANS).THEIR WEB SITE LISTS DR'S NAMES IN THE STATES WHERE THEY TREAT OBESITY. DR. GINGO IS VERY HELPFUL AND COMPASSIONATTE. HE DOES NOT STOP TREATMENT. I'VE BEEN GOING TO HIM FOR YEARS TO KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF THAT I LOST. YES, I SAID FOR YEARS. THE ADIPEX CURVES MY APPETITE WHILE GIVING ME SOME ENERGY. THESE PILLS ARE NOT ADDICTIVE. YOU HAVE TO MAKE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE. YOU CAN'T KEEP EATING HIGH FAT,WHITE PROCESSED SUGAR LADEN FOODS AND EXPECT TO LOOSE WEIGHT. THESE PILLS DO CURVE THE APPETITE, AND ARE AN ADJUNCT TO YOUR NEW WAY OF LIFE. THERE ARE NO HEALTH PROBLEMS FROM TAKING ADIPEX OVER 20YRS. WHEN I'VE BEEN OFF THE PILLS DUE TO A MISSED APPOINTMENT, SICKNESS, OR LACK OF MONEY MY APPETITE INCREASES. NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS. PORTION CONTROLL IS A MUST IF YOU TRULY WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF. AGAIN, HE DOES NOT STOP TREATMENT. THE FACTS928

I would just like to say, for me adipex is/ was a miracle. I went from 170 down to 130 in 2 months. As someone else said, my doctor gave it to me in combination with b12 shots. The b12 minimizes the side effects of the adipex. It also makes it so you still have an appetite. So I was also given a diet. The 3x combo worked great. I will not need to use adipex for maintenance because I've learned a whole new lifestyle (which was the doctors point). So for everyone on here b*tchin' about how they are skinny and just want the pill for maintenance, how about you start eating some fruits and veggies and build some muscle mass. Stop yo-yo dieting. For people who do NEED it, but have had it before I know my friend has been able to call the original dr who prescribed it to her, and even though she moved he just sent a new script to the pharmacy that she now uses (she had moved a complete state away)

Never trust Peter Lakewood (ph37.5mg@g mail.com) he will just steal your money. I was scammed by him and never got the pills as promised! He goes by the name Peter Lakewood but over the phone, he has an Indian accent and he is wiring the money via moneygram to Kannan Jagannathan; so it goes to show that he is indeed Indian. Beware in dealing with this scumbag or you will lose you hard earned money! Spread the word and don't let him fool more people with his scam!

To the big mouth Anonymous who posted on Sept.22nd:

If people want to use phen for maintenance, WHAT'S IT TO YOU?

YOU'RE the one who sounds like a b*tch.

Stop wagging your finger and telling people to "start" eating fruits and vegetables.

Like we don't already do that.

How do you think some of us STAY skinny?

We eat a balanced diet, we exercise, and we use phentermine when we need it.

And there will be times when you're going to need it, too.

You'll see.

Good luck keeping that weight off.

Happy HALLOWEEN!

I took phentermine for about 6 months off and on, lost 30 lbs and never felt better. Just can't afford it. I'm back in school and my oldest is back in college. $100 a month for 60 pills. Dr. is Richard Lenaghan in Northern Kentucky. Don't have all his info with me right now but you can google it. He's also over an hour away from me. Anyone know of a Dr in Ohio or Indiana that prescribes it? My family doctor wants me to take Meridia but even with insurance it's $150 a month.

$100 a month for 60 pills and an office visit is pretty good! I understand it's an expense that's hard to reconcile when you have a kid in college. I've been there, and I know every penny counts!
Meridia doesn't give you that little extra pep that you sometimes feel with phentermine so for me, it wasn't worth it.

I took phentermine 37.5 about 2 years ago. I took it for 6 months. I was originally at 280lbs. When I was done I weighed 165lbs. My doctor told me that usually people gain close to half of their weight back, so to give it a few months and then if I needed to do maintenance to come back. I never had to go back. Then I got laid off 3 months ago, and have put 30lbs back on...WTF? So I gave him a call and it turns out someone abused the program so he no longer prescribes it. Aaaargh! So I live an hour and a half from Vancouver, Canada. Does anyone know what the procedure would be to go to a doctor up there, since they seem more tolerant of diet medicinal drugs. It really sucks that all these people (and by these people I mean doctors, and phsychiatrists...etc.) take all kinds of Mind medicines to feel better and then we find a medicine that makes us happy to live life again...and we cant take it or they make it virtually impossible to get it because it may be addicting. Hello??? You can't stop your Paxil, Zoloft, or Cymbalta cold turkey, lol. Really what's the difference? (for all you jerks who are about to tell me....I already know the literal difference) I'm just saying....it's all about feeling good and wanting to exist happily....Stop making it so hard for us. No wonder so many people turn to street drugs....they are easier to get than the fda approved ones. LMAO!!! Whatever happened to bom...bom...BOM "THE SOURCE"? s d y m i l l e r at aim 80P

I have been reading your posts and I really feel bad for those of you who no longer have access to what I would call a 'lifesaver'! 14 months ago, I weighed in at a whopping 280 lbs. I could barely breathe, couldn't do outdoor activities thatI love so much. My husband tried to hide the fact that he noticed how large I was. My life was horrible and my blood pressure was sky high.

Today I weigh 173.5 and my blood pressure and love life are back to normal. Thank the Lord and a website I found which I am honored to share: medicationtoyou.com The product name is Duromine and I take 30mg. 1 x per day. It is timed release, so no jitters or strange Adipex side effects. It literally changed my life, I hope it can help you too.

I've been on Phentermine now for a month and a half. I absolutely love it. I had my 3rd child in May and weighed 274lbs. (I was 220 when I got pregnant) I've always been bigger, I weighed about 195 at my high school graduation in 1998, but I was also very athletic, which helped keep it somewhat under control. I vowed before having my daughter that I was going to lose the weight. I started P90X and a responsible diet mid June 2010. I stayed very dedicated but by November I had plateaued at about 214 lbs. I went to my Dr. He was reluctant about prescribing it, but said with a 34% BMI he would allow me to be on it for 3 months as long as I was losing at least 4lbs per month. I have to get weighed before he'll write another 30 day prescription. I'm on about my 6th week of it, and when I got my first refill I weighed in at 195lbs! I cried. Same as my high school graduation weight and moving down. I'm so motivated now its great. I'm at 192, which is about 42 pounds above my goal, however I've lost 82lbs since last May. I'm hoping that keeping the hard work going will help to overcome the withdrawl from the pills easily. Any pointers on overcoming, and continueing with the healthy lifestyle without the Phentermine?

As of today when I weighed, it was 268! That's 44 pounds in just a little over 3 months. Which those months included the dreadful holidays!! I'm so excited and ready to live my life. I am desperate to find a doctor in or very near Columbus Ohio who will prescribe Adipex(Phentramine). All the diet doctors I've talked to send me to nutritionists and talk about exercise. I DO get a LOT of exercise, but writing me out a diet to follow does me no good if I can't stick to it! I can't control the "fake hunger" and cravings! PLEASE HELP ME! I'm 5'2 and over 200 lbs.

I am overweight and interested in trying phentermine. I seen a recommendation on this post for a doctir in my area that will prescribe it. any suggestions on what to say when I call to try to get an appointment for the first time. This doctor is an internist and not just strictly a weight loss doctor. Would I just ask upfront if they offer prescription weight loss?

Adipex is a category C and it says that there are studies that it passes through your breast milk... So I would say no...

I've only been on Phentermine for one month. It worked wonders for me this entire time. BUT....yes, there is a BUT. I, unlike many others BUSTED my a$$ off the whole time, without just relying on the medication. I walk/run 3 1/2 miles 3 days out of the week, I recently started doing Zumba, and I work on toning my abs. I've lost a total of 22 lbs in this first 4 weeks. What I've noticed with my second prescription..is that it has already lost a MAJOR part of its effectiveness. :( I'm starting to get a great portion of my appetite back. I am still dieting and eating healthy, but I'm hungry more often. I am only losing like, a pound every week now. Do you think if I stopped taking it for a week and then started again, it would be more effective like it was at first? Let me know your opinions.

I am a stay at hime Mom of 3 and also babysit 3 during the week. I would LOVE to have the mentality of "Eat to live" not "live to eat" (; I love most all food and find myself celebrating with food. I cook meals all day! Lunch for the little ones & dinner for the family. I can not seem to get my mind off food! Recently went to the dr. As I can not seem to drop my weight even though I've been on an exercise program. I've started the generic Adipex and am loving it!! I've never felt like this in my life, I am actually thinking other things besides food. I am very excited to use opportunity to re-train my brain. I've been doing lots of research & am already planning for when I go off Adipex. Has anyone had good luck with phentramin-d? I am anxiously optomistic for my new life while also nervous about what will happen when I go off the med. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
