Summary
A high-carb, low salt, low fat diet that will "detox" your body and shed pounds.
Description
You are allowed to eat whole grains (not just rice), fruits, vegetables, beans, limited fish, and non-fat dairy products. You must also avoid salt. This diet links salt to appetite stimulation, so you must avoid it.
Brown rice is encouraged over white rice.
Fat is nearly eliminated from this diet. Protein is also limited quite a bit. This diet is recommended for people with heart disease.
The Rice Diet is headquarted in Durham, NC at the Rice Diet Program & Heart Disease Reversal Clinic. People will often start the diet at the center, learn new habits, then bring them home to continue.
Mindfulness techniques (meditation and yoga) along with a 12-step style program are used.
History
The Rice Diet center has been around since 1939. More recently, the Rice Diet book has been made available.
Criticism
It may be hard to stick to the program of very-low salt, low fat, and low flavor foods. 12-step programs and mindfulness techniques don't work for everyone. Low protein could lead to loss of muscle not fat.
