The Zone Diet

Summary

This is a low-calorie diet that promotes eating food with a certain ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

Description

The Zone diet touts eating foods in a tight balance (often referred to as "blocks"). A block has 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat. The idea is that this ratio is both health and satisfying for people.

Overall blocks per day are set as well. Thus, the amount of food you eat is limited. This is a low calorie diet.

The diet is broken down into 3 phases: Entering, eating, and living in The Zone.

From the back-cover of "Enter the Zone":
  1. Eat for a better quality of life
  2. Americans are getting fatter in spite of eating less fat.
  3. Eating fat doesn't make you fat.
  4. Athletes perform better on a high-fat diet.
  5. You can burn more fat watching TV than by exercising.
  6. A high-carbohydrate diet for cardiovascular patiences may be dangerous to their health.
  7. The quality of your life is controlled by the foods you eat.
  8. Food may be the most powerful drug you will ever come in contact with.
  9. The new dietary recommendations of the US government nutrition experts and medical experts are dead wrong.

The Zone tells you why

  1. Achieve permanent fat loss and better physical performance while reducing the likelihood of disease.

The Zone tells you how

History

This diet was created by Barry Sears, Ph.D. In 1995 he publish the book, "The Zone".

Criticism

It can be hard to feel satisfied on a low calorie diet like this. Thus, it can be hard to stick to it. Also, food choice tend to be limited due to the balance requirements.

when i was manager at GNC, we had pretty many products geared towards the 40-30-30. one brand of supplements is the "balance" brand. they made supplement powders and bars and things. i love this idea...but it seems far too tedious for me personally, and far too restrictive. this plan could totally work if i had a personal chef to do my "thinking" for me.
btw....the bars that "balance" made weren't all that bad. still, most of the carbs were indeed from a sugar source, which isn't all that great, but taste-wise....they were alright and plenty of options, (although, this was 9 years ago already, so who-even-knows what they offer on the market today).

My wife and I tried The Zone a number of years ago (in the mid-90s, I think). I remember it was hard to stick to it because it wasn't very satisfying. I also remember us making these 1-block "cookies". But, they didn't come out right. They ended up being bland little balls of food. Sort of like a Dunkin' Donuts Munchkin (or donut hole), but they didn't taste very good. We didn't last long on The Zone.
