Volumetrics

Summary

Volumetrics is a system embodied in two books by Dr. Barbara Rolls that teaches you to choose foods that are satisfying (make you feel full) so that you can control your hunger and lose weight.

Description

The idea behind this diet is pretty simple and makes sense. The problem with a lot of other diets is that you end up feeling deprived and hungry, so it becomes hard to stick to the diet. With Volumetrics, you'll learn to choose foods that fill you up, without all the fat and calories. You'll be able to eat plenty, because the foods you're choosing are naturally lighter and filling.

For example, instead of having a small bowl of potato chips with dip, you'll learn to have a vegetable platter with low-fat dip. Instead of macaroni and cheese, you'll have veggie-stuffed macaroni and cheese. In both cases, the vegetables provide a lot of nutritious food to help fill you up, while also adding a lot of flavor to what you're eating.

Fruit is another good example. Raisins are calorie dense, but grapes (what raisins are made of) have more volume. Would you rather eat 1/4th of a cup of raisins or 2/3rds of a cup of fresh grapes? Volumetrics helps you learn to pick the grapes.

The books contain many more examples and recipes for how you can shift what you're eating toward lower-calorie but filling foods. So, you'll be able to eat until you'rr satisfied, while still losing weight.

The first book, The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan, outlines the diet plan. The second book, The Volumetrics Eating Plan: Techniques and Recipes for Feeling Full on Fewer Calories, gives additional, focused instructions on how to better apply the Volumetrics system in your daily life.

History

The creator of Volumetrics and author of both books is Doctor Barbara Rolls. She does nutrition research at Pennsylvania State University. Robert A. Barnett also helped write the The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan.

Consumer Reports recently said this about Volumetrics: "Recent clinical trials show best overall weight loss of any diet evaluated. We judged the recipes appetizing but somewhat time-consuming to prepare."
