Summary
Xenical (orlistat) is a prescription drug that helps overweight people lose weight.
Description
Xenical blocks absorption of about 1/3 of the food that you eat. The effect is that you take in less calories and lose weight because of it.
Specifically, Xenical binds with lipases (an enzyme in your digestive system that breaks down the fats you eat). This causes some of the fats you eat not to be digested or absorbed into your body. Instead it is eliminated when you go the bathroom.
Xenical is usually only prescribed to people with a significant weight problem. It's often recommended that you also take a multi-vitamin while using Xenical.
The great thing about this drug is that you don't have to do anything different. You can continue to eat and exercise the same amount as you did before and Xenical will do the rest. Of course, it's better to east healthy and exercise regularly, but it's not essential with Xenical.
Criticism
Since Xenical blocks absorption of some of the food you eat, it can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Specifically, some vitamins are bound to the fat you eat. But, Xenical blocks digestion of that fat. So, you may not get enough.
