Xenical

Summary

Xenical (orlistat) is a prescription drug that helps overweight people lose weight.

Description

Xenical blocks absorption of about 1/3 of the food that you eat. The effect is that you take in less calories and lose weight because of it.

Specifically, Xenical binds with lipases (an enzyme in your digestive system that breaks down the fats you eat). This causes some of the fats you eat not to be digested or absorbed into your body. Instead it is eliminated when you go the bathroom.

Xenical is usually only prescribed to people with a significant weight problem. It's often recommended that you also take a multi-vitamin while using Xenical.

The great thing about this drug is that you don't have to do anything different. You can continue to eat and exercise the same amount as you did before and Xenical will do the rest. Of course, it's better to east healthy and exercise regularly, but it's not essential with Xenical.

Criticism

Since Xenical blocks absorption of some of the food you eat, it can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Specifically, some vitamins are bound to the fat you eat. But, Xenical blocks digestion of that fat. So, you may not get enough.

I was put on this medicine by my doctor a few years ago. NEVER AGAIN. I did go on a low fat diet with this and still had problems with oil leakage it was horrible. Do not waste your time or money on this unless you want to wear a pad strapped to you butt.

I think that a fiber pill to make you feel full, and thus less eating plus a 30 minute walk at least 3 times a week, would be the best choice and not have these terrible side effects. I am a strong believer in the saying that "You can not expect great things without first putting forth some effort and doing a little work."
I had a pharmacist to print out the side effects of Xenical, if you are interested, and they are as follows:
Fatty/oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, bowel movement urgency, poor bowel control, or headaches may occur. Intestinal side effects may increase or intensify if you exceed your daily dietary fat allowance. This drug should not be taken if one has other digestive diorders, allergies, low thyroid function, other metabolism problems(e.g., oxalate kidney stones, hyperoxaluria). This drug should not be taken if you have anorexia nervose or bulimia-type eating disorders. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using. The manufacturer does not recommend use of this drug during pregancy. It is not known whether this drug is excreted into breast milk.--I choose getting more fiber into my diet and some walking, what about you.

I am currently on this since whatever was done to me in th ehospital added water retaining to my problem and 100 pds, this drug (in my case) reduced the amount of water reducing pills I need to take, cause massive oil spills once evry couple of weeks. HOWEVER if you are healthy and seriously overweight this pill can cure your problem. I know at least 2 people whos' lives have changed and they are very very happy - they also will hit me up for the pill cause its big $$$$, and i noticed te manufacturer has reduced the active magic ingrediante s;pw;y since I first tried it. it currently is helping me to hold my ground against the weight gain but I need to find something (short of diabetes) to win the battle before I lose the war.
